- 0:04Speaker 1: hailing from the city of sin, put your hands together
- 0:07Speaker 1: for Jamison Welch. And in this corner, standing at 5'10,
- 0:10Speaker 1: weighing in at * * * pounds, and coming to
- 0:14Speaker 1: us from his super secret bunker with no AC in Tucson, Arizona,
- 0:18Speaker 1: put your hands together for Luis Montemayor.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Thank you and welcome back to another episode of Mixed
- 0:27Speaker 2: Company Podcast. Of course, I'm going to have for the
- 0:29Speaker 2: show My name is Jamison. As always, I'm joined by Luis. Luis,
- 0:32Speaker 2: what's going on, man?
- 0:34Speaker 3: Well, Jamison, actually, I wanted to start off by asking
- 0:37Speaker 3: you what's going on in your neck of the woods.
- 0:38Speaker 3: I saw something on social media last night. There's flooding
- 0:42Speaker 3: in Vegas because of a hurricane. Is that something that's
- 0:46Speaker 3: kind of coming up the works? Is it dangerous? Is
- 0:49Speaker 3: it anything that might get in not just a way
- 0:51Speaker 3: of boxing events, but other events? What's going on where
- 0:54Speaker 3: you're at?
- 0:55Speaker 2: Every time it rains here, we get the same flood
- 0:56Speaker 2: at the same places. Uh, so you're going to see
- 0:59Speaker 2: the same clip every year at the link. There's like a,
- 1:02Speaker 2: a bridge or like a garage at the link. I
- 1:05Speaker 2: should say that right under it connects to like a
- 1:08Speaker 2: lot of the tunnels underneath stuff under the city. So
- 1:12Speaker 2: that always it's flooded every time it rains for more
- 1:13Speaker 2: than an hour, that part gets flooded. Why they don't
- 1:16Speaker 2: fix it. I don't know. It's been a problem for years.
- 1:19Speaker 2: They have never fixed it. I don't know why I
- 1:22Speaker 2: don't get it, but it's been a problem. It's going
- 1:24Speaker 2: to still be a problem. I don't understand. However, they
- 1:27Speaker 2: don't do anything about it. So every year, every time
- 1:30Speaker 2: it rains for more than an hour, that's what happens.
- 1:32Speaker 2: When you, the flood you saw, it didn't rain that
- 1:35Speaker 2: long for it to happen. That's the crazy part. It
- 1:38Speaker 2: wasn't a bunch of rain. It was maybe an hour
- 1:41Speaker 2: and a half worth of rain at most. So, yeah. Okay. Okay.
- 1:45Speaker 3: And then just out of curiosity, does it disrupt like
- 1:47Speaker 3: a lot of traffic, foot traffic, like, or does, do
- 1:50Speaker 3: most people just kind of go by their day to
- 1:52Speaker 3: day without being affected too much?
- 1:54Speaker 2: We know the people who live here know, So, you know, like, hey,
- 1:57Speaker 2: when it starts raining, you can't really go there. It
- 1:59Speaker 2: doesn't make sense to really go there like that. You know,
- 2:02Speaker 2: so it's more one of those situations where it doesn't
- 2:05Speaker 2: disrupt anything else besides that area. We had a couple
- 2:08Speaker 2: other areas around town, but it's mainly around the east
- 2:10Speaker 2: side of town. One of the freeways here has some flooding, ironically,
- 2:14Speaker 2: but for the most part, nine times out of ten,
- 2:16Speaker 2: it's mostly on the older part of town that has, like,
- 2:18Speaker 2: the real severe flooding where it gets, like, cars can
- 2:21Speaker 2: get trapped and stuff like that.
- 2:23Speaker 3: Okay, well. Sounds like it's not the end of the world,
- 2:25Speaker 3: not the worst thing. And, you know, so long as
- 2:27Speaker 3: everybody stays safe out there and everybody just be careful. Well,
- 2:32Speaker 3: let's get into the news and got some, actually a
- 2:35Speaker 3: lot of what I talk about in terms of Vegas
- 2:36Speaker 3: for this episode, because this Saturday, if you listen to
- 2:39Speaker 3: this episode, when it comes out the 17th, we've got
- 2:42Speaker 3: another one of my favorite things that happened in the
- 2:45Speaker 3: boxing world. The second half of this year, the monthly,
- 2:49Speaker 3: the zone and TNT collabs. Uh, we got a fight
- 2:52Speaker 3: that's airing on regular ass TV, basic cable, you know,
- 2:57Speaker 3: don't need streaming or subscription, just classic TNT, which, you know,
- 3:01Speaker 3: I love find it on a, on a bar TV. Uh,
- 3:05Speaker 3: this weekend we've got, uh, three Mexican fighters or Mexican
- 3:09Speaker 3: American for a couple of them. If you want to
- 3:10Speaker 3: split hairs, but, uh, very much focused on, on Mexican fighters. Uh,
- 3:16Speaker 3: Sebastian Fundora, Brendan Figueroa, and Armando Resendiz are fighting, uh, Now,
- 3:21Speaker 3: all three of them are fighting guys whose names I've
- 3:23Speaker 3: never heard of. No disrespect to those opponents, but they're
- 3:27Speaker 3: making this kind of a Mexican based event. So here's
- 3:30Speaker 3: something that I was curious about. These guys, these three
- 3:33Speaker 3: guys are well-known names, I think. Not A-listers. This seems
- 3:38Speaker 3: like a fun event. I'm very excited about it. I
- 3:39Speaker 3: don't want anybody to think I'm not excited about this.
- 3:41Speaker 3: But I'm curious, just something like this that I guess
- 3:44Speaker 3: you might call it a tune-up event that, you know,
- 3:47Speaker 3: how does that resonate in Vegas? We've talked about how
- 3:49Speaker 3: when Canelo's there, it's crazy. Everybody comes out. You told
- 3:53Speaker 3: us that, you know, when Benavides, Francisco de Mayo, Ryan Garcia,
- 3:57Speaker 3: Mexican Independence Day, not so much. Do you see any
- 4:00Speaker 3: kind of like, I don't know, trickle, ripple, I should say,
- 4:04Speaker 3: in the town when there's, you know, three Mexican guys that,
- 4:08Speaker 3: like I said, aren't A-list for no fault of their
- 4:10Speaker 3: own or their skills?
- 4:12Speaker 2: Here's the situation. When the economy is going well and
- 4:17Speaker 2: the political climate is different, you would see a greater outcome.
- 4:22Speaker 2: You would see a greater crowd. Two things right now.
- 4:27Speaker 2: For those that don't know, whenever there's a fight in Vegas,
- 4:31Speaker 2: whether it's a Mexican fighter, a Mexican-American fighter, a black fighter,
- 4:35Speaker 2: a Filipino fighter, anyone from a different country, them people
- 4:39Speaker 2: come out in droves. Ricky hadn't had the whole UK
- 4:44Speaker 2: here when he fought his big fights here. That's just
- 4:48Speaker 2: how it goes. However, people have money at that time.
- 4:51Speaker 2: So when the money's going well, interest rates are good,
- 4:54Speaker 2: money's flowing, people will find ways to be here, have fun,
- 4:57Speaker 2: the whole nine. You don't want to have a card
- 5:00Speaker 2: that no one knows anyone on. And you have it
- 5:04Speaker 2: around a time where people don't have extra money. So
- 5:07Speaker 2: right now, when we grew up, Vegas was a place
- 5:09Speaker 2: to go because all of our parents went there and
- 5:11Speaker 2: our friends went there, et cetera, et cetera. It was
- 5:14Speaker 2: also a lot cheaper to go, attend, have fun, be
- 5:17Speaker 2: here for a whole weekend. It's not the case anymore.
- 5:19Speaker 2: Vegas by itself is a two grand a weekend type
- 5:23Speaker 2: of trip. When you factor in hotel rooms, food, parking,
- 5:28Speaker 2: the whole nine, and then if you want to go
- 5:29Speaker 2: to a fight, yeah, you're definitely spending a lot of money, drinks,
- 5:32Speaker 2: et cetera. So I don't think you're going to get
- 5:35Speaker 2: the same turnout you would have gotten if this was
- 5:36Speaker 2: 2016 or 2018. or 2012. I don't think so. If
- 5:41Speaker 2: it was that many years, oh yeah, people would be
- 5:43Speaker 2: out here. They do pretty well. People would be out
- 5:47Speaker 2: here the whole night. If they didn't go to the fight,
- 5:49Speaker 2: they'd still be out in Vegas. And that's just not
- 5:52Speaker 2: there anymore. And that's the problem. That's one of the
- 5:53Speaker 2: issues that we have.
- 5:55Speaker 3: Yeah, I really appreciate the insight there. You know, I've
- 5:58Speaker 3: been to Vegas, you know, I went recently, but before that,
- 6:02Speaker 3: I hadn't been in 20 years almost. So yeah, it's
- 6:05Speaker 3: hard for me to gauge what the difference is, but
- 6:07Speaker 3: it seems to me like a fight like this again,
- 6:10Speaker 3: as excited as I am, and I'm going to be
- 6:13Speaker 3: stoked to tune in. It's not really a draw in,
- 6:16Speaker 3: in this era. Like you said, the economy, things are expensive. Uh,
- 6:20Speaker 3: and I was just very curious as to, you know,
- 6:22Speaker 3: in previous times, these guys who are, I don't know,
- 6:25Speaker 3: let's call it like B list, a minus, um, fighters,
- 6:28Speaker 3: people have something like that in terms of their fame,
- 6:30Speaker 3: not in terms of their, their, their, uh, skills or
- 6:32Speaker 3: anything like that. Um, because Mexicans will support their own.
- 6:37Speaker 3: We know that like, that's always, I've always been a thing.
- 6:40Speaker 3: But when you've got an economy such as it is,
- 6:43Speaker 3: and then you've got no huge names like a Canelo
- 6:47Speaker 3: Alvarez or an Oscar De La Hoya or Marquez, et cetera,
- 6:51Speaker 3: who's really flying from Mexico or other places in the
- 6:55Speaker 3: Southwest to see this particular fight? It's more of a bummer,
- 6:59Speaker 3: I think, that it's just not really generating hype, generating income,
- 7:05Speaker 3: generating excitement for the live boxing fans. But I don't
- 7:08Speaker 3: know what your thoughts on that are.
- 7:10Speaker 2: Yeah, man. At the end of the day, it comes
- 7:11Speaker 2: down to a couple things. People have to have money
- 7:16Speaker 2: to do extra things. Right now, this is a luxury.
- 7:19Speaker 2: Boxing is a luxury, especially it's mid-October. A lot of
- 7:22Speaker 2: people are already planning for the holidays. So, if you
- 7:24Speaker 2: don't have a big, big name, people are not going
- 7:26Speaker 2: to spend excess money like that at this point in
- 7:29Speaker 2: time where things are kind of tough. Especially if you
- 7:31Speaker 2: don't have a big name. Now, if you have a
- 7:32Speaker 2: big name, then it's all different, but that's not the case. However,
- 7:36Speaker 2: here's another thing. Um... I would like to see Vegas
- 7:41Speaker 2: and boxing work together and put together packages and entice
- 7:44Speaker 2: people to come in town. So certain casinos, I'm pretty
- 7:47Speaker 2: sure it's at the fight at T-Mobile or MGM.
- 7:50Speaker 3: So the fight will be at the Chelsea at the Cosmopolitan.
- 7:53Speaker 2: So it's even better. So I'd like to see Cosmo
- 7:58Speaker 2: have a room fight package combo to entice people to
- 8:02Speaker 2: come out here. That would be cool. Even though it's
- 8:05Speaker 2: not a lot of seats in the Chelsea, it's enough.
- 8:08Speaker 2: But I would like to see something like that or
- 8:10Speaker 2: a couple of the casinos combined in and have packages
- 8:12Speaker 2: to entice people to come because that's the only way
- 8:15Speaker 2: you're getting people out of town because the price of
- 8:17Speaker 2: a hotel on a weekend is crazy. Like, it's truly crazy.
- 8:21Speaker 2: So I understand all the shortcomings of things. I get it.
- 8:25Speaker 2: But at the end of the day, you got to
- 8:26Speaker 2: make things easy for the consumer. You can't keep hitting
- 8:29Speaker 2: the consumer over the head every time. It just don't
- 8:32Speaker 2: work that way. Eventually, the consumer's going to be like, nah,
- 8:35Speaker 2: just nah, I can't do it no more.
- 8:39Speaker 3: Is that– am I just kind of making this up
- 8:41Speaker 3: in my old man brain? But I feel like that
- 8:44Speaker 3: was a thing back in the day. There would be
- 8:45Speaker 3: like fight packages, travel packages. But I guess travel packages,
- 8:49Speaker 3: calling a travel agent was a thing that we remember
- 8:51Speaker 3: from back.
- 8:52Speaker 2: In the day. Well, tickets weren't– the tickets to the
- 8:55Speaker 2: fight weren't involved, but you were able to get a
- 8:58Speaker 2: deal on rooms and stuff. Like back in the day,
- 9:00Speaker 2: all the– like Southwest used to have a good bundle
- 9:02Speaker 2: on stuff out here. all kinds of things. But with
- 9:05Speaker 2: that being said, everything's changed and everything's gone up in price.
- 9:09Speaker 2: And then, you know, secondly, and most importantly, Vegas has
- 9:13Speaker 2: become an elitist city to where you can't just come
- 9:16Speaker 2: here at 500 bucks and make it. Like, they're expecting
- 9:19Speaker 2: you to come here and spend a lot of money.
- 9:21Speaker 2: And that's the thing. People from our generation and older,
- 9:23Speaker 2: we're not necessarily used to that. So that's a really
- 9:26Speaker 2: huge divide right now on what's going on currently in
- 9:29Speaker 2: the city. However, it is one of the few places
- 9:31Speaker 2: that's well-equipped to handle any given event any given time
- 9:35Speaker 2: because of the rooms and venues and arenas so a
- 9:38Speaker 2: fight night like this it's pretty interesting but it won't
- 9:41Speaker 2: be a huge huge turnout it's in the proper venue
- 9:44Speaker 2: because mgm holds 15 000 people this ain't gonna be
- 9:47Speaker 2: 15 000 people at this point in time but there
- 9:49Speaker 2: was a time that it would or be close to
- 9:51Speaker 2: it for sure.
- 9:53Speaker 3: Yeah and you know i just personally speaking i just
- 9:55Speaker 3: remember you know hearing from friends back in my 20s
- 9:58Speaker 3: early 30s just like oh we're going to vegas for
- 10:00Speaker 3: the weekend just like nothing you know like i'm in
- 10:02Speaker 3: tucson like driving to phoenix two hours and you know
- 10:05Speaker 3: this is at a time when um you know i
- 10:09Speaker 3: was making less money in the time and my friends
- 10:10Speaker 3: at the time were making uh not as much as
- 10:13Speaker 3: we are now thankfully we're very lucky But yeah, it
- 10:16Speaker 3: just seemed like the kind of thing you just did
- 10:18Speaker 3: and didn't take a lot. You said had a few hundred.
- 10:22Speaker 3: And the vibe seems very different. Me being somebody that
- 10:25Speaker 3: has not been there regularly, like I said. And it's unfortunate.
- 10:28Speaker 3: I mean, yeah, the thing about having packages for fights
- 10:31Speaker 3: at the hotel where the fight is happening, it seems
- 10:34Speaker 3: like a no-brainer. Especially at a time like this when
- 10:37Speaker 3: economy is not great, tourism is on the decline, boxing
- 10:41Speaker 3: is on the decline. I just don't see what... what people,
- 10:46Speaker 3: why the boxing world isn't hustling to get more people
- 10:49Speaker 3: in the door. It's not a secret that people don't
- 10:52Speaker 3: have as much money to spend. It's not a secret
- 10:53Speaker 3: that attendance to anything is down.
- 10:55Speaker 2: My God. Yeah.
- 10:57Speaker 3: But at the same time, I mean, you know, I
- 11:00Speaker 3: see people playing at the sphere, different bands and, you know,
- 11:03Speaker 3: some of them are charging $ 2, 000 for tickets. So it
- 11:07Speaker 3: just depends on, you know, which, what the, what the attraction,
- 11:10Speaker 3: attraction is because, at least what I see on Tik
- 11:13Speaker 3: TOK and other social media, the sphere is packed every weekend.
- 11:16Speaker 3: You know, Metallica is playing there right now. And those
- 11:18Speaker 3: shits were like, like round trip to Europe expensive for
- 11:22Speaker 3: one ticket. So I, it's just kind of hard to
- 11:25Speaker 3: gauge what, uh, what capturing people's attention, but we know
- 11:29Speaker 3: that boxing isn't really, unfortunately. Um, but I do think
- 11:33Speaker 3: this fight, like I said, it's good that it's on
- 11:35Speaker 3: regular TV. Um, Yeah, the three guys that are fighting
- 11:39Speaker 3: the opponents to the Mexican guys. So Sebastián Fundador is
- 11:43Speaker 3: fighting Irma Hadribaj, who's an Albanian. Figueroa is fighting Tomoki Kameda,
- 11:48Speaker 3: who's from Japan. And then Resendiz is fighting Ken Mazurier.
- 11:53Speaker 3: Sorry if I butchered any of those names from Australia.
- 11:55Speaker 3: So names I've never heard of. I'm not going to
- 12:00Speaker 3: say that I'm the be-all, end-all expert, but I don't
- 12:03Speaker 3: seem like household names to me. Not like a lot
- 12:04Speaker 3: of boxing fans would know. So what's really kind of
- 12:08Speaker 3: grabbing people to get out there other than, you know,
- 12:11Speaker 3: having it kind of be a Mexican item pulling people
- 12:14Speaker 3: out there? We're kind of not. It's sort of just
- 12:18Speaker 3: kind of setting an event like this up to fail,
- 12:22Speaker 3: you know, which I hope doesn't happen.
- 12:24Speaker 2: Don't get me wrong.
- 12:24Speaker 3: But that's what it kind of seems like to me.
- 12:25Speaker 3: I don't know about you.
- 12:27Speaker 2: Yeah, well, fail is a tough word because we don't
- 12:29Speaker 2: know what the expectations are for the event. Chelsea is
- 12:32Speaker 2: a much smaller venue, so it's going to look good.
- 12:35Speaker 2: Like when the crowd that's there is going to look,
- 12:37Speaker 2: it's going to look full because it's a very small
- 12:39Speaker 2: venue and it's cool. And for boxing fans, it's going
- 12:42Speaker 2: to be a good event to go to. The thing
- 12:44Speaker 2: about Vegas that makes Vegas so unique is that you
- 12:47Speaker 2: want to have casual fans at fights. That's what changes.
- 12:49Speaker 2: That's what makes Vegas Vegas is that whenever there's even
- 12:52Speaker 2: not having a premier car, that's not fair, but even
- 12:55Speaker 2: like a regular car, like let's say even a Ryan
- 13:01Speaker 2: Garcia car, which is a regular, he's a regular guy.
- 13:03Speaker 2: He's not special. He's a regular guy. A card like
- 13:05Speaker 2: that would have seats available. So the random person that's
- 13:09Speaker 2: in Vegas that heard that through the boxing match that
- 13:12Speaker 2: would get tickets either from their casino host or they
- 13:14Speaker 2: might buy tickets or whatever, that's what's cool about Vegas. Like, hey,
- 13:17Speaker 2: I'm in town at the same time this guy's fighting.
- 13:20Speaker 2: Why not? I got nothing else to do. Why not?
- 13:22Speaker 2: That's what makes Vegas so great. That's what Vegas is
- 13:25Speaker 2: all about. So you'll still get a couple of those
- 13:28Speaker 2: on Saturday, but it's not going to be as much
- 13:30Speaker 2: because also the fight's not being marketed like that either.
- 13:33Speaker 2: Back in the day, we had billboards. We had commercials.
- 13:35Speaker 2: We had beer commercials, beer ads, the whole nine. We
- 13:38Speaker 2: had the model. We had all kinds of stuff. It's
- 13:41Speaker 2: just not the same.
- 13:43Speaker 3: Yeah, and that very thing you mentioned, I've done that
- 13:45Speaker 3: before while traveling. When I was in Philly, just some
- 13:47Speaker 3: random guy at a sports bar was just like, hey,
- 13:50Speaker 3: you going to the game? I'm like, what game? He's like, oh,
- 13:52Speaker 3: the hockey game, the Flyers. I looked it up. I
- 13:55Speaker 3: could walk to the venue in, I think, 15 minutes.
- 13:57Speaker 3: I got a ticket. Nosebleeds were like $ 30, $ 40 or
- 13:59Speaker 3: something like that. Yep. Hell yeah, let's do it. I
- 14:02Speaker 3: had a fun time, stayed for half, had a fantastic time,
- 14:04Speaker 3: worth the amount that I spent for how much fun
- 14:07Speaker 3: I had. And Vegas and boxing, to me, to us,
- 14:11Speaker 3: our generation is so synonymous. If somebody is in town
- 14:14Speaker 3: for the weekend, I would imagine that most people would
- 14:18Speaker 3: just be like, what boxing match is happening, even if
- 14:20Speaker 3: it's something that I don't know. But it just also
- 14:23Speaker 3: doesn't feel that that's the case.
- 14:26Speaker 2: Right, right. Again, especially right now during the football season, Uh,
- 14:31Speaker 2: everybody's kind of keyed in on that. So if you're
- 14:33Speaker 2: coming to Vegas for football and it's boxing on Saturday,
- 14:36Speaker 2: I could definitely see people seeing what's going on with my,
- 14:38Speaker 2: it's just a lot of ways. But again, marketing is key.
- 14:41Speaker 2: We used to market every and all fights to the
- 14:43Speaker 2: point where we'd get tired of the marketing. We used
- 14:46Speaker 2: to also have HBO do a great job of marketing.
- 14:48Speaker 2: We used to have Showtime do a great job of marketing.
- 14:50Speaker 2: It's just unfortunate, but everyone kind of got lazy because
- 14:54Speaker 2: everyone kind of relied on the big moneymakers to make
- 14:57Speaker 2: the fights. Like obviously Floyd was a great marketing guy. Um,
- 15:01Speaker 2: Pacquiao kind of was as well for his market. Canelo
- 15:04Speaker 2: obviously was. So they didn't really need the machine behind them.
- 15:07Speaker 2: They were the machine. But all those guys are pretty
- 15:09Speaker 2: much done now. So there's no infrastructure to market and
- 15:14Speaker 2: set up fights. As great as Terrence Crawford was and is,
- 15:18Speaker 2: he still needs help when it comes to marketing a fight.
- 15:22Speaker 2: I don't think at this day and age, if you
- 15:25Speaker 2: were to be like, hey, Terrence Crawford's coming back. If
- 15:28Speaker 2: he was not fighting an A-list guy, I'm not sure
- 15:32Speaker 2: how well it would do in like at the box
- 15:35Speaker 2: off inside the arena. I don't know. I'm not saying
- 15:38Speaker 2: he would be empty. I'm not saying that, but his
- 15:41Speaker 2: name alone is not big enough to just saw an
- 15:44Speaker 2: arena like that. It doesn't work that way. Not in Vegas,
- 15:47Speaker 2: maybe in his hometown, but not in Vegas. Right.
- 15:49Speaker 3: And you know, you'd mentioned HBO and the infrastructure. I
- 15:52Speaker 3: can't help but think that, you know, losing boxing from
- 15:55Speaker 3: HBO and Showtime really just kind of killed that. The marketing,
- 15:58Speaker 3: the hype, And yet another thing too, just thinking about
- 16:01Speaker 3: for back in the day, which back in the day
- 16:04Speaker 3: was 10 years ago, boxing and HBO were synonymous up
- 16:07Speaker 3: until that point.
- 16:08Speaker 2: So you think about this. We used to watch HBO programs.
- 16:13Speaker 2: Now everything's streamed. So you don't have the same ads
- 16:16Speaker 2: anymore because everything is streamed. You log in to stream,
- 16:19Speaker 2: log into the app to stream. Now you may have
- 16:20Speaker 2: an ad on the bottom or whatever, but you're not
- 16:23Speaker 2: tuning in Sunday night watching The Wire, Sopranos, being an
- 16:26Speaker 2: ad for a boxing match, or you're watching Entourage, whatever, whatever,
- 16:29Speaker 2: then those days are long gone. Same thing with Showtime.
- 16:32Speaker 2: You're not going to Showtime channel watching it for three hours.
- 16:36Speaker 2: You're watching whatever show you want to watch and you
- 16:38Speaker 2: go on. So, boxing is not adjusted to the changes
- 16:43Speaker 2: everyone else has. And that's part of the problem as well.
- 16:46Speaker 3: Yeah, and I gotta say, you know, like I said,
- 16:50Speaker 3: boxing and HBO was synonymous in my mind growing up.
- 16:54Speaker 3: And Netflix has gotten into the boxing game, you know,
- 16:57Speaker 3: with a lot of big events, this and that, but
- 16:59Speaker 3: It doesn't feel like Netflix and boxing is synonymous in
- 17:01Speaker 3: my mind. Neither does Amazon Prime or any of the
- 17:05Speaker 3: other streamers that put on there. They just don't have
- 17:08Speaker 3: that connection that we used to have or that boxing
- 17:12Speaker 3: and the channels used to have. I'm sorry, but everything
- 17:16Speaker 3: is on DAZN and DAZN is not the household name
- 17:20Speaker 3: that HBO is.
- 17:21Speaker 2: It ain't the same. It ain't the same. It ain't it.
- 17:26Speaker 2: I think that's a big issue is that We come
- 17:29Speaker 2: from an era where we're used to certain things. So
- 17:32Speaker 2: once you're used to a certain standard, when the standard's
- 17:34Speaker 2: not being met, we're like, ah, like, nah. It's like
- 17:38Speaker 2: going to your favorite restaurant, right? And for all of
- 17:40Speaker 2: a sudden, the top chef left or the person who
- 17:42Speaker 2: made things shake left, and now somebody's different in there
- 17:45Speaker 2: and it don't taste right. Right now, boxing don't taste right.
- 17:48Speaker 2: And that's the problem. That's the issue.
- 17:50Speaker 3: I feel like most of us that have a favorite
- 17:52Speaker 3: restaurant have been through that multiple times, you know, people
- 17:55Speaker 3: come and go places, even hell, even like a place
- 17:58Speaker 3: closes and the chef moves on and opens another place.
- 18:00Speaker 3: It's never the same, you know? So, so I get it.
- 18:03Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 18:04Speaker 3: And you know, I, like I said, I want to
- 18:05Speaker 3: make sure I don't want anybody to think I'm poo
- 18:07Speaker 3: pooing this event on Saturday because very excited about it.
- 18:11Speaker 3: So happy that it's going to be on TNT.
- 18:14Speaker 2: And to be honest with you, I'd rather have it
- 18:16Speaker 2: at the Chelsea than have it at MDS MGM. Like,
- 18:19Speaker 2: if it's going to be in an event, like, hey,
- 18:21Speaker 2: if it's going to draw 3,000, cool. It'll look cool
- 18:24Speaker 2: in the Chelsea. It drawing 3,000 at MGM is pointless. Plus,
- 18:29Speaker 2: you never want an event to seem empty. I don't
- 18:31Speaker 2: care what it is. I don't care if it's graduation.
- 18:33Speaker 2: I don't care if it's a boxing match. You never
- 18:35Speaker 2: want an event that's going to be on TMT seem empty.
- 18:38Speaker 2: That wouldn't benefit anyone.
- 18:41Speaker 3: Right, and credit to these monthly events at TNT, you know,
- 18:45Speaker 3: we've had this fight in Vegas coming up. We had
- 18:47Speaker 3: Lamont Roach versus William Cepeda in Vegas, but then Andrew
- 18:50Speaker 3: Reese fought in Jersey. Abdullah Mason fought in Cleveland, where
- 18:53Speaker 3: he's from. So, you know, they're giving us different venues,
- 18:56Speaker 3: which is really cool. And I'm, you know, I'm happy
- 18:59Speaker 3: to have, to see boxing matches happen in other places with,
- 19:03Speaker 3: at the very least, you know, your Andy Cruz is
- 19:05Speaker 3: not like the biggest name, a superstar or anything like that,
- 19:08Speaker 3: but he's a known commodity and he's a draw.
- 19:10Speaker 2: So....
- 19:12Speaker 3: Yeah, I think it's, I am very, very happy that
- 19:15Speaker 3: TNT is doing the monthly events. I don't, I don't know,
- 19:18Speaker 3: but also to be fair, I haven't looked it up,
- 19:19Speaker 3: you know, how long this is supposed to go, you know,
- 19:22Speaker 3: is it, do they have a contract for a year,
- 19:23Speaker 3: six months? I don't have no idea.
- 19:25Speaker 2: That's a great question. That's a great question. I will
- 19:27Speaker 2: say people need content. These networks need live content. So
- 19:32Speaker 2: I don't see boxing being asked out. However, the issue
- 19:36Speaker 2: is how can we take it to the next step?
- 19:38Speaker 2: It's one thing to be on TV. It's another thing
- 19:40Speaker 2: to have it marketed correctly. and have it executed correctly.
- 19:44Speaker 2: I think that's the next step because, all these streaming
- 19:47Speaker 2: companies there, I mean, I just saw something today where
- 19:49Speaker 2: the World Cup is going to be streaming exclusively on
- 19:52Speaker 2: Netflix in four years. So all these companies need live
- 19:56Speaker 2: content and boxing is always going to be of interest
- 19:59Speaker 2: because at the end of the day, people want to,
- 20:01Speaker 2: they want to see fights. They want to see violence.
- 20:03Speaker 2: That's what we, in this country, that's what we live.
- 20:05Speaker 2: That's what we live on. So, so yeah. Yeah.
- 20:10Speaker 3: Well, you know, still supporting this, this monthly series on TNT.
- 20:13Speaker 3: Hope it keeps going. And, you know, we got to watch,
- 20:15Speaker 3: we've got to tune in. We've got to support it.
- 20:17Speaker 3: I've got to support boxing on regular linear television on
- 20:21Speaker 3: basic cable. So definitely going to be checking it out.
- 20:23Speaker 3: I haven't decided if I'm going out somewhere, just checking
- 20:25Speaker 3: out home. Depends, depends on the vibes. It depends on
- 20:27Speaker 3: the week. Sometimes I'm like, you know, it's crack a
- 20:30Speaker 3: beer at home and put it on the TV, but,
- 20:34Speaker 3: but Hey, you know, don't have to pay no, no
- 20:37Speaker 3: pay-per-view prices on it or anything like that. Just, Just
- 20:39Speaker 3: find the channel. So that's super cool. But yeah, everybody
- 20:42Speaker 3: check out Sebastián Fundora, Brandon Figueroa, and Armando Resendiz this
- 20:47Speaker 3: Saturday the 17th. Moving on to another thing in the
- 20:50Speaker 3: news that honestly I am kind of poo-pooing more than not.
- 20:53Speaker 3: The Canelo fight, October 31st against Billy, is going to
- 20:57Speaker 3: be held in Riyadh. We had mentioned in a previous
- 21:00Speaker 3: episode that that potentially was in question because of the
- 21:03Speaker 3: Iran war. And at the time you mentioned it, there
- 21:06Speaker 3: was no actual like attack in Riyadh. But as of
- 21:10Speaker 3: last week, I believe it was on Thursday when we
- 21:13Speaker 3: dropped the show, there was a bombing at the Riyadh airport.
- 21:16Speaker 3: And everything, everybody is saying this fight is going to happen.
- 21:20Speaker 3: Turkey Elishek said he talked to Canelo. He's going to
- 21:22Speaker 3: fight there no matter what that quote Canelo fear. He
- 21:25Speaker 3: fears nothing. I'm sorry, man. There's a difference between being
- 21:28Speaker 3: brave and just being unsafe. And I just don't understand why.
- 21:34Speaker 3: They didn't pull back a plan and move it to November.
- 21:37Speaker 3: We'll talk a little bit more, but I just want
- 21:38Speaker 3: to get your thoughts before we dive deeper into what's
- 21:42Speaker 3: going on with this fight.
- 21:44Speaker 2: This fight has no business being over there. This fight
- 21:47Speaker 2: is a U.S. West Coast fight. It should be in Vegas, L.A.
- 21:53Speaker 2: You can even sell me on Dallas if you wanted to.
- 21:56Speaker 2: If you wanted to go there, I could understand that.
- 21:59Speaker 2: I'm more of Vegas, though, because Vegas could use a
- 22:02Speaker 2: big fight night. Sure. It needs to be here. A
- 22:06Speaker 2: fight over there doesn't do anything. Why? No one's traveling
- 22:10Speaker 2: over there right now. No one's family is letting them
- 22:13Speaker 2: go over there. No one's significant other is like, oh,
- 22:17Speaker 2: enjoy yourself. No. No, no, no, no, no. That's one
- 22:21Speaker 2: of those ones where it's like, sorry, I can't make it.
- 22:24Speaker 2: You make up any excuse you can. Health issues, family issues,
- 22:30Speaker 2: et cetera. You ain't going to make it.
- 22:32Speaker 3: Sorry.
- 22:32Speaker 2: Passport issues. Whatever. It ain't going. I'll put it this way.
- 22:38Speaker 2: If we got paid to go over there, I wouldn't go.
- 22:42Speaker 2: And I need the money right now. I pay two mortgages.
- 22:46Speaker 2: I wouldn't pay to go right now. So I'm just saying,
- 22:49Speaker 2: I'm being completely honest with you. Ain't no way. Ain't
- 22:54Speaker 2: no way in hell would I go over there. I
- 22:59Speaker 2: get people over there used to certain things. It's tough
- 23:02Speaker 2: enough living in Vegas right now. All right. I'm not
- 23:06Speaker 2: flying all the way over there to risk my life. No, no, no, no.
- 23:09Speaker 2: I'm not going out that way. I go out other ways.
- 23:11Speaker 2: I'm not going out that way, brother. Not doing it.
- 23:13Speaker 3: Can you imagine, like you said, the two of us,
- 23:16Speaker 3: let's say we're invited, we were paid. Just telling our
- 23:18Speaker 3: group chat, telling our mothers in the family chat that
- 23:21Speaker 3: we're going to Riyadh right now to cover a boxing event.
- 23:23Speaker 3: Can you imagine the shit that we'd hear from them?
- 23:27Speaker 2: The nerves of the older people in our family would
- 23:30Speaker 2: be out of control. And that's something I wouldn't wish
- 23:33Speaker 2: on anyone because that's not fair. A lot of our
- 23:35Speaker 2: parents are older, right? My mom's in her late 70s.
- 23:38Speaker 2: My dad will be 70 next year. I don't want
- 23:40Speaker 2: to put them in that kind of stress with everything
- 23:42Speaker 2: going on right now. Plus, too, like... Americans ain't having
- 23:47Speaker 2: the greatest luck in overseas right now. That ain't just
- 23:50Speaker 2: the thing to do. You know what I mean? So
- 23:52Speaker 2: I just don't really want to risk it. I don't
- 23:55Speaker 2: feel comfortable.
- 23:56Speaker 3: Well, and you mentioned there's no reason for the fight
- 23:58Speaker 3: to be out there. It's not doing anything for boxing.
- 24:00Speaker 3: I looked it up. There's an article. Tickets are on sale.
- 24:03Speaker 3: The cheapest is $ 13 US dollars. The most expensive is
- 24:05Speaker 3: $ 106 for the premium diamond package, whatever. this is obviously
- 24:12Speaker 3: not a moneymaker for ticket sales or getting people into seats.
- 24:15Speaker 3: You know what I mean? Whatever, however big the venue
- 24:18Speaker 3: is like, you know, this Canelo fighting, what, what the
- 24:21Speaker 3: hell was it when he fought Crawford? It was like,
- 24:23Speaker 3: you know, $ 4, 000 for, for a decent seat.
- 24:26Speaker 2: It was way more than that. That fight. So the
- 24:28Speaker 2: uppers were what they were, but any good seat was
- 24:31Speaker 2: running a lot. But with all that being said, with
- 24:34Speaker 2: all that, look here, man, I'm going to be completely
- 24:37Speaker 2: honest with you. Canelo at this stage of his career,
- 24:42Speaker 2: is not worth traveling that far to go watch fight.
- 24:46Speaker 2: I don't care who he's fighting. That ain't worth it.
- 24:49Speaker 2: I've seen the last four years of, no, the last
- 24:53Speaker 2: five years of Canelo Alvarez fighting. You mentioned it a
- 24:56Speaker 2: while ago. There's a decline. I'm not saying he's trash
- 24:59Speaker 2: or nothing like that. He's still a very good fighter.
- 25:02Speaker 2: He's still elite of the elites. It's just that it
- 25:05Speaker 2: ain't the same no more. Now, if you told me
- 25:07Speaker 2: that it was prime Canelo fighting prime Bud Crawford, I
- 25:12Speaker 2: might think about it. I still probably wouldn't go, but
- 25:16Speaker 2: I think about it. What? Nah. Nah.
- 25:21Speaker 3: Yeah. When I said it was like $ 2, 000 to $ 4, 000,
- 25:23Speaker 3: I said a decent seat. You know, the packages were
- 25:26Speaker 3: going up to like $ 10, 000. Some of them were for
- 25:28Speaker 3: premium stuff like $ 18, 000. Like, that makes sense. And you mentioned, oh,
- 25:32Speaker 3: you know, you could be sold on a fight in Dallas.
- 25:35Speaker 3: Speaking of Canelo and Texas, let's not forget his biggest
- 25:38Speaker 3: door was him versus Billy Joe Saunders in Dallas at 73K,
- 25:45Speaker 3: even more so than Allegiant. Because what was it, like 70?
- 25:48Speaker 2: So Jerry's world is 70 plus. Allegiant was like in
- 25:51Speaker 2: the high 60s, if I'm not mistaken. Yeah.
- 25:54Speaker 3: So, I mean, my God, like what are we doing here?
- 25:58Speaker 3: We have a lot of these news stories that just
- 26:01Speaker 3: kind of comes down to that. It's what the hell
- 26:03Speaker 3: are we doing?
- 26:04Speaker 2: That fight's been empty too. I don't know anyone that's going.
- 26:08Speaker 3: Yeah, I didn't do any research into the venue and
- 26:11Speaker 3: how many people it holds, this and that. But, you know,
- 26:15Speaker 3: of course, there's a lot of sunny money backed into us.
- 26:17Speaker 3: They have to, you know, kind of keep up their brand,
- 26:19Speaker 3: et cetera. But at the end of the day, it's
- 26:22Speaker 3: not worth the risk of an empty stadium, the risk
- 26:26Speaker 3: for people's safety. And I've been... I've criticized, you know,
- 26:32Speaker 3: the Saudis for being all turkey, all the shit for
- 26:34Speaker 3: being involved in boxing. But even so, I've developed a
- 26:37Speaker 3: lot of like, well, let's wait and see. Let's see
- 26:38Speaker 3: what we get, blah, blah, blah. I've got nothing for this. Like,
- 26:42Speaker 3: there's no defense. There's no like, well, maybe, you know,
- 26:47Speaker 3: this will turn out well. This will be beneficial for boxing,
- 26:49Speaker 3: for new fans, et cetera. There is no upside here.
- 26:53Speaker 3: I can't even.
- 26:54Speaker 2: If you're selling seats for $ 13, you're selling seats for
- 26:58Speaker 2: WNBA prices. You stay your ass at home. all right,
- 27:03Speaker 2: you need to stay at home. When your price is
- 27:05Speaker 2: WNBA-ish and regular season baseball, stay your ass at home.
- 27:09Speaker 2: This is unnecessary. This is ridiculous. Yeah.
- 27:12Speaker 3: And here's the thing. It's not a matter of just like, oh,
- 27:15Speaker 3: there was just like a random bombing, this and that.
- 27:17Speaker 3: It was for, we can learn a little something today,
- 27:20Speaker 3: the Houthi militia backed by Iran. And this is all
- 27:23Speaker 3: due to the war in Iran right now. Like this is,
- 27:27Speaker 3: based on a very specific you know global conflict it's
- 27:30Speaker 3: not just like some random dude you know what i'm.
- 27:32Speaker 2: Saying so here's another thing with everything going on right
- 27:35Speaker 2: now we know the saudis have money but ain't the
- 27:39Speaker 2: same as it was when everything was going smoothly so
- 27:42Speaker 2: with all that being said maybe they feel like well
- 27:46Speaker 2: hey this is payback for everything that's going on here
- 27:48Speaker 2: i don't know because there's no there's no reason why
- 27:51Speaker 2: i mean i feel like they would make more money
- 27:52Speaker 2: in vegas or in dallas they would there but Maybe
- 27:56Speaker 2: this is payback. I don't know, but nothing makes sense.
- 27:58Speaker 2: But I do know that a lot of things have
- 28:00Speaker 2: been impacted over the last six to 12 months with
- 28:04Speaker 2: a lot of current events.
- 28:06Speaker 3: Yeah, and shout out to our producer coming through, Javari.
- 28:09Speaker 3: Always appreciate you. He just told us that there's 8,000
- 28:12Speaker 3: seats at the venue in Riyadh. 8,000. That's it? Yeah,
- 28:15Speaker 3: that's it. That's what we're putting people potentially at risk
- 28:17Speaker 3: for when we have so many potential venues in the U.S.? Is.
- 28:20Speaker 2: It 8,000 seats or the price is Up to 8,000.
- 28:25Speaker 2: That's the question. I just want to make sure. Oh, seats? Oh, well, then, yeah.
- 28:28Speaker 2: We stay at home. What are we doing here, man? Like,
- 28:33Speaker 2: this is... I mean, again, I don't have nothing against nobody.
- 28:36Speaker 2: I don't have no... Again, I got friends of all
- 28:39Speaker 2: different backgrounds, all different races and creeds. I ain't no...
- 28:43Speaker 2: I ain't racist of any kind. However, there's no business
- 28:47Speaker 2: sense in this situation. This doesn't make any sense of
- 28:50Speaker 2: any kind. This is a ego... we're doing this because
- 28:54Speaker 2: we can, but this doesn't make any fucking sense. Right.
- 28:58Speaker 3: And yet none of our complaints here are due to,
- 29:01Speaker 3: you know, any of the people involved or like, you know,
- 29:03Speaker 3: racist religion, any of that. It's just the fact that
- 29:04Speaker 3: there is, there were goddamn, you know, bombings at the airport,
- 29:09Speaker 3: at the same airport, I'm assuming that people are going
- 29:10Speaker 3: to use to get there for the fight, fighters, staff,
- 29:13Speaker 3: you know, media, any of that. It's, it's just ridiculous. And,
- 29:17Speaker 3: you know, we had talked to the previous episode that
- 29:19Speaker 3: they were eyeing maybe a November date change venue change
- 29:22Speaker 3: for Vegas and, but based on what Turkey Ella Shake
- 29:25Speaker 3: said last week, it's going to go through, quote, no
- 29:28Speaker 3: matter what happens, which honestly I think is ridiculous. At
- 29:33Speaker 3: the end of the day, I just hope everybody there
- 29:35Speaker 3: is safe. Everybody who goes there comes back safely in
- 29:39Speaker 3: one piece. gets back home to their families and friends.
- 29:42Speaker 3: But yeah, I was very unhappy when I heard the
- 29:46Speaker 3: response from Turkey Elishek about what happened. It's just not
- 29:50Speaker 3: worth this. I love this sport more than most things
- 29:53Speaker 3: in the world. I've never cared about any other sport.
- 29:55Speaker 3: I love it to death. But it's not worth it.
- 29:57Speaker 3: A fight from anybody, any boxer, any matchup, just not
- 30:02Speaker 3: worth the risk. So we'll see what happens, and we'll
- 30:05Speaker 3: just kind of keep an eye on the story as
- 30:07Speaker 3: it develops. So yeah, this was supposed to be a
- 30:10Speaker 3: short one, but the conversation was so good it went longer.
- 30:12Speaker 3: But Jameson, where can people find you on social media?
