- 2:40there was a book that came out called The Freestyle Cipher, and I told
- 2:46you that I would have another author. Well guess what tonight she is here
- 2:53tonight on Sci Book Gall and French Chats, we have author kay Lynn Hunt.
- 3:00Hi, sweetie, I am good. I'm good. I'm good,
- 3:07and how are you doing? I'm good. It's good, good day.
- 3:13I was in the heat all day at my nephew's football team. Way to
- 3:17go for throw Chester Patriots. But lord, I'm in Michigan. It's not
- 3:25hot here so again I heard its beautiful there, Yes it is, but
- 3:32the weather is not. It's nice. So we already started getting chili as
- 3:38well. It wasn't that bad today. It was like fifties, that's nice.
- 3:45I could do fifty. I could do fifty. It wasn't that bad
- 3:49today. But and now you get that whole chill. I've been turning my
- 3:53heat on already, so already, yeah, oh my god. See I'm
- 3:58in South Carolina. So fifty we pulling out jackets and stuff, you know.
- 4:02Forties we got full booth and gear. You know, in thirties they
- 4:08already closed out school because it was too so welcome to our show, but
- 4:15we always stought up. You gotta tell us a little bit about yourself,
- 4:19okay, Well, as you said, my name is Kaylin Hunt. I
- 4:24have been self publishing since twenty eleven. I have oh six books, a
- 4:34couple anthologies, few short stories. I've always loved writing, and I wrote
- 4:44the first book I actually published. I wrote it and actually sat on it
- 4:49for like four years because I just didn't know what to do with it.
- 4:53And I decided I'm like, I'm going to put it out there like just
- 4:58here. So and I've been writing ever since. I've taken a little break
- 5:03over the last few years. Well I haven't really been doing a lot of
- 5:09publications. But right now I have a lot of stuff in the work.
- 5:14So within the next year, I'm going to be dropping probably every three months,
- 5:18it'll be a new book or something. Oh so what and this is
- 5:26an offscript question, but what do you consider your genre? I don't like
- 5:33to put myself in a box, so for I say, contemporary, urban
- 5:40contemporary, or you know, women's fiction. But a lot of my books
- 5:46kind of touch on different things. It's like really one category that I don't
- 5:53think it belongs in, like multiple but I kind of pen whatever comes to
- 5:59mind. My books is a paranormal so and then one of my current projects
- 6:04is actually a suspense novel. So yeah, I kind of jump all over
- 6:12the place. I have romance, well women's fiction, because I don't know
- 6:16how romance. It's a lot of drama in those two. Yes, yes,
- 6:23yes, I've seen some romance books and I'm thinking, good god,
- 6:27how many pins in the game you're going on now? Like rufles come from
- 6:32rufus in the book? Now, totally understand. So the book that we're
- 6:42talking about tonight Freeestyle cipher. How did that come along? So I am
- 6:51in a book club I see you reading and chatty, and it's an online
- 6:57book club. Well, we have a in per core nine member book club
- 7:01that we meet once a month, but we expanded it to online. It's
- 7:05like an online book club I See Reading, Chatting, which has over two
- 7:10thousand members. The founder Ebonie Evans. One day, in order to like,
- 7:15you know, keep everybody engaged, she came up with this idea where
- 7:19she will drop photos and a writing prompt and invite authors to just make up
- 7:28a story on the fly. So it has grown. We've been doing it
- 7:32for six years. It has grown to she has to schedule, so she
- 7:38does I think four to five authors per week every Friday, call it freestyle
- 7:43Friday, and she'll have a topic, drop some photos, and authors come
- 7:48and do their little short stories right under the posts. So I write almost
- 7:56every week, and I just there are some excellent stories and a lot of
- 8:03the times I always get we need more, or even other authors that you
- 8:09read, I'm like, I want more. So I was. I had
- 8:11been trying to figure out how to get it all in one place. So
- 8:16one day I was just like, Hey, who would who might want to
- 8:18do this with me? And and it was just I had not done anything
- 8:24like that before, but I wanted to try it. I thought it would
- 8:28be great and it turned out better than I expected. I see, I
- 8:33see, So can you tell us a little bit about your short story in
- 8:39the cipher? My short story is called Mark for Life, and I kind
- 8:46of I don't even know when that topic came up because a lot of the
- 8:50freestyles I just keep, but it was one that kind of resonated with me.
- 8:54So it's about man and a woman, Kamaya and her her husband Cameo.
- 9:03You get a little backstory about how they met, and the story opens
- 9:07with it's their anniversary and something happens that sends Kamaya in a tailspin and she
- 9:18does something that really scares her husband into thinking she's gonna leave, and a
- 9:28lot it's a surprise that happens in the situation before it's all said and done,
- 9:35and he he still won't know the gravity of what he's done until later
- 9:45on. See, That's why i'd be setting myself out when I asked you
- 9:52all to do this. Give me a little bit because I'm sitting up here
- 9:56like that's all you're gonna give. See y'all be setting people up? Yeah
- 10:03see. And then so I always have a plot twist that people dostie coming.
- 10:09I love those. I can't I love them give too much information because
- 10:15it might give a clue because I like to shock people with the plot twist,
- 10:20like, oh, I didn't know that was happening. Well, you
- 10:22weren't supposed to love that. I love that. I love that so much.
- 10:28I love that left corner coming out because I would be the one go
- 10:31back a couple of pigs and be like, hold up, where where did
- 10:35that come from? So I love that. So what is the most valuable
- 10:41piece of advice have you been giving or you have gave about writing or just
- 10:50making a career of writing? The advice I always give to people that want
- 10:56to write, not sure what to do, been you know that are apprehensive
- 11:03about it, I always say, just put it down, just start writing,
- 11:07don't try to make it perfect, just get it out. You can
- 11:09fix it later. But if you whatever's in your head, if you get
- 11:15it down, that's the part. Once you get it out, fixing it
- 11:20is the easy part. So that's always my advice to people. The best
- 11:31advice given to me was don't stop. Of course, again, I had
- 11:39kind of just not really been focusing, and I, you know, I
- 11:45don't put myself on deadlines, and I probably need that, but I,
- 11:48you know, but I like, don't stop, keep going. So me
- 11:54and deadlines don't get on. Well, actually, so I don't sat deadlines
- 12:01for myself. I'm just like, I'm gonna do it and it doesn't make
- 12:05me accountable. One of the things I learned from this freestyle, when I
- 12:11put all these people together, it helped me having someone as holding me accountable,
- 12:16and even even I was just the one pushing everybody to make sure you
- 12:20get this, make sure you get that. But I for me, knowing
- 12:24that somebody else is waiting on me, it just pushed me to go ahead
- 12:28and not procrastinate. For me, it's not I'm not a writer. I'm
- 12:33a reviewer. I'm a how little girl called me today, she said,
- 12:39you're a book blogger, so okay, that's what you want. I don't
- 12:46procrastinate. I just forget. It's like it could be on my Okay,
- 12:52I need to do this, But then the next time'm like, oh,
- 12:54I'm doing something else, and then I'm like what was I doing? Again?
- 12:58And I'll be looking at the thing. Like even at work, I
- 13:01work at a public library, I'll go in the back and I'll stop and
- 13:05I was like, hey, what was I supposed to do? Again?
- 13:09As I remember, and then I'll find a book ooh to ball look at
- 13:13her. So I totally understand. I totally understand. So offscript, what
- 13:22do you like better or what would you prefer to write? Full novels?
- 13:30Anthologies or are they calling them novelists now? Which which one do you prefer?
- 13:35So? I prefer a full novel, but the anthologies and the novella's
- 13:45and novelists they're much it's not as much pressure because they're shorter, so you
- 13:50don't have to it's not you don't have to figure out where this is going
- 13:54to weave this into that to make it a full length. You can pack
- 13:58a lot more into this short story, and not for me, because a
- 14:03lot of it is like, okay, I have to make this make sense
- 14:07and not just feel like you're filling it in with words. It has to
- 14:11flow. So in order to get a full novel like making it flow consistently,
- 14:20it's just a little it's a little more time consuming when you have the
- 14:24short stories. But like I said, with the freestyle cipher, I write
- 14:31almost every week, and I write those stories within eight hours, like it's
- 14:37just out gone and actually something. Honestly, it doesn't even take me that
- 14:41long because I'll get the story, I'll see what the topic is, I
- 14:46look at the photos, and sometimes I don't start writing right away because I
- 14:52start doing other stuff. But in the back of my head, the way
- 14:54I think my mind works is it's already thinking, Okay, what are we
- 14:58doing with this? So when I sit down and say, okay, where
- 15:01is the story going, I'll get an idea. And sometimes it ends up
- 15:05not where I'm going but where I was going. But I have actually sitting
- 15:13like today, well yesterday, hey, Abone So and that's our president.
- 15:18She's the one that started freestyle cipher. Ebney, We're gonna talk to you
- 15:24too. Can you tell you miss aving me? Yesterday? I did a
- 15:31freestyle and I want to say, it's probably like sixteen hundred words, and
- 15:35I was writing and I was so shocked at how good it was, and
- 15:39I didn't start writing it. I was at work writing to say that.
- 15:43I mean, I probably shouldn't say that out loud, but it's okay.
- 15:46And I text ebone and was like, I gotta leave work, and I
- 15:50had I gotta leave because this story is getting so good I don't want to
- 15:54stop. So hey, I'm going to reference this. Yeah, let me
- 16:03ask you a question. Why do you want to ask me a question?
- 16:07Do something? So those stories are easy for me to crank out. But
- 16:14because again, you don't have to continue it and make it so draw it
- 16:19out further with it hasn't make sense. You not just fill it with whatever.
- 16:25And I think a lot of times people throw extra stuff in books to
- 16:30make them longer, and it's not put in there seamlessly, and it should
- 16:34be seamlessly. All right, all right, well you guys, we're gonna
- 16:38take a break and we're gonna come back. And y'all know that second half
- 16:42is always my front time. I hope she's ready, but we're gonna take
- 16:47a break and we're gonna come back and talk to off the hunter. Turn
- 17:07off the legs the candle tonight, an a, Megan, let's take a
- 17:26shower shower together. I was abuded. You was my dad some wealthy and
- 17:51nothing save Jayce, Turn off the girl. I want to care of you
- 18:07a special treat. You're so sweet turn on. So you guys, let
- 18:18me apologize right now. I propracticed this all week to say Hunt, but
- 18:26I keep saying, Hunter, I am so sorry. It's okay. I
- 18:33kept on saying, and I just heard it when I when we went to
- 18:37commercial, said Hunter, this me. I did exactly what I didn't want
- 18:40to do, and I apologized. So this half we always ask fun questions.
- 18:47Okay, So here's the first question. If you could spend the day
- 18:52with any author, who would you choose? And why dead or life dead
- 19:00or life Maya angelou? Ooh? Why my an? Actually she is the
- 19:10one that fuel my passion for reading, which of course turned into a passion
- 19:15for writing. But just I would want to be with her just to soak
- 19:19up the knowledge, just like talking to your elder aunt. You know what
- 19:25I'm saying. Like that's my answer to that question every time. Okay,
- 19:30So she was an author and a reader. Do you feel that authors should
- 19:36be readers too? I do. For me, just like when I write,
- 19:44I think about what I would want to read or how I would want
- 19:48to read it, or and like I said, I always throw in apply
- 19:51twist because I read to think, Okay, what's happening next. I don't
- 19:55want people to know what's gonna happen next. They can think they know and
- 19:57it could look like it's going that way, but it has to be something
- 20:02different. And I think that reading you get a feel for you know,
- 20:08how things flow, what happens, you know different, just see different aspects
- 20:14of writing and just immersing yourself in that whole world. Thank you, thank
- 20:22you. I love when authors are readers, yes, because like that's like
- 20:27a cook not tisting's food, right, It just doesn't calculate with me.
- 20:36And I've met authors who said, oh no, I'll never read a book,
- 20:41huh how and so lay Lately I've actually been listening to audio books because
- 20:47I can do that while I'm at work and nobody knows what. They're not
- 20:51interrupting me looking at a book because a lot of times they come like,
- 20:53why are you interrupting me? But I could be listening and totally tune them
- 20:57out. Yes, library alert, you know, I gotta give y'all that
- 21:03little proper knowledge. If you have a public library card, you can get
- 21:11free audio books. Stop doing those audiobulls when you're getting this one book credit
- 21:17for nine and ninety nine cent a month where you can get I think my
- 21:22library system we do fifteen, ten to fifteen books a month. Okay,
- 21:32I'm setting up the audio, and sometime I'd be like, Lord, please
- 21:34don't make me jump out of this chair and my IT piece come out,
- 21:38because if they hear some of the stuff that, yes, they already got
- 21:47this. One little old lady. She comes in there and she gets our
- 21:51little urban novels. She go get the girl who read the Nasty Black Book.
- 21:57You want to go to My coworkers say this, but what you want
- 22:00to do? You know, but it's a joy to see people reading,
- 22:06especially African American culture. Yes, still it's sad to say that, you
- 22:15know, like they said, if you want to hide it from somebody African
- 22:18American or that of color, put in the book. And even my nephews
- 22:23and my daughters they're readers. And my nephews be like, we gotta go
- 22:27Auntie house and read a book, then we get to go outside. Yes,
- 22:33all right, Auntie. So I love the fact that you did that.
- 22:37So what is the name of your main character, male or female in
- 22:48the cipher? Uh? Camaya? Camaya? All right? So Camaya Camaya.
- 22:55If Camaia was a fast food chain, which one would she be?
- 23:00And why did you choose that one? Told you these questions are crazy.
- 23:06Oh so oh if Camaia was a fast food chain, let me see,
- 23:18I would have to go with mm hmmm barber King because you can have it
- 23:34your way hold up so so so, So Camaya is a Kamaia. Commayah,
- 23:48she's a Camaya, she doesn't she when when when her husband does something
- 23:57that totally devastates heard, another Camaya shows up? Oh? Okay, okay,
- 24:07Maya's burger King. Okay, what is the name of your leading male
- 24:15in the book? Cameo? Cameo? All right? So Cameo was a
- 24:22car, who would he be? And why? Mm hmmm he would be
- 24:33a Corvette? Oh and why a Corvette because he goes fast and everyone loves
- 24:41him everyone. Okay, I'm trying to get the burger king and yep mm
- 24:56hmm okay, y'all, so you like me, you're drawing all blanks and
- 25:03that's great. That means you gotta get the book. But before we letting
- 25:07miss Kaelin Hunt leave us tonight, what would you like the city your readers?
