- 0:02In May 1973, a devotee from the West was visiting Oroville and
- 0:07South India. At that time, it was primarily
- 0:11an eroded, dusty plateau, not the lush, forested scene that
- 0:16one can see today. If one visits.
- 0:19May is an extremely hot month, and the visitor had just arrived
- 0:23a couple of weeks earlier from the United States.
- 0:27As he was walking around in the midday sun, he was struck by the
- 0:31intensity of the sun's heat and force, and at one point he
- 0:36curled up on a hillside, overwhelmed with heat stroke and
- 0:41a pounding headache that accompanied it.
- 0:45After lying there for a while, he was prompted to get up or he
- 0:49would die on that hillside. So he found a way to get up,
- 0:54walk back to shelter, and get some water.
- 0:58He lived to tell about it, but the trauma was deep.
- 1:04This is an example of not being able to open, receive and hold
- 1:08the universal force that was flowing.
- 1:12The mother tells another story where some individuals found a
- 1:15way to open themselves and appreciate the power of the
- 1:19sun's heat and force rather than succumbing to it.
- 1:23There is a famous tale in the piranhas about a wife of Surya,
- 1:27the sun God, who closed her eyes, trembled and could not
- 1:32bear the intensity of her husband's force.
- 1:35Because of her closing of her eyes and trembling, Surya
- 1:39imprecated her to give birth to Yama, the God of death, and
- 1:44Yami, the river Yamuna. She struggled for a long time to
- 1:48find a way to deal with the effulgence of the sun, and her
- 1:52story has many twists and turns in it.
- 1:55Surya at one point asked his wife's father, once he
- 1:59understood the issue, to reduce the intensity of his radiance
- 2:03sufficiently to allow the wife to bear the force.
- 2:08We see here an eventual accommodation whereby the
- 2:11universal force can be received and assimilated through
- 2:15achievement of an understanding between the universal force, in
- 2:20this case the sun, and the recipient of that force in the
- 2:24form of his wife. As we see in these texts, the
- 2:29universal force has both an impersonal and a personal
- 2:33aspect, and a relationship can be developed if one appreciates
- 2:38the personality of that force and takes steps to befriend
- 2:42rather than fear its power, the mother observes.
- 2:46Quote I knew young people who had always lived in cities, in a
- 2:52city and in those little rooms one has in the big cities in
- 2:56which everyone is huddled. Now they had come to spend their
- 3:00holidays in the countryside in the South of France.
- 3:03And there the sun is hot, naturally not as here, but all
- 3:08the same it is very hot. When we compare the sun of the
- 3:12Mediterranean coast with that of Paris, for example, it truly
- 3:16makes a difference. And so when they walked around
- 3:20the countryside the first few days, they really began to get a
- 3:23terrible headache and to feel absolutely uneasy because of the
- 3:27sun. But they suddenly thought, why
- 3:31if we make friends with the sun, it won't harm us anymore.
- 3:35And they began to make a kind of inner effort of friendship and
- 3:38trust in the sun. And when they were out in the
- 3:41sun, instead of trying to bend double and tell themselves, oh
- 3:45how hot it is, how it burns, they said oh how full of force
- 3:51and joy and love the sun is, et cetera.
- 3:54They opened themselves like this gesture and not only did they
- 3:59not suffer any longer, but they felt so strong afterwards that
- 4:04they went round telling everyone who said it is hot, telling them
- 4:09do as we do, you will see how good it is, and they could
- 4:13remain for hours in the full sun, bare headed and without
- 4:17feeling any discomfort. It is the same principle.
- 4:22It is the same principle. They link themselves to the
- 4:24universal vital force which is in the sun, and receive this
- 4:28force which took away all that was unpleasant to them.
- 4:35When what is in the countryside? When one walks under the trees
- 4:39and feels so close to nature, to the trees, the sky, all the
- 4:44leaves, all the branches, all the herbs.
- 4:48When one feels a great friendship with these things and
- 4:51breathes that air which is so good perfumed with all the
- 4:55plants, then one opens oneself, and by opening oneself communes
- 5:01with the universal forces and for all things it is like that.
