- 0:17Hello everyone, and welcome back to the Easy Double Podcast.
- 0:21We're on episode 22. I'm joined by the man fresh off
- 0:24a 10K race this morning and the man who's also maybe been
- 0:28following those results quite closely.
- 0:30So welcome to the pod fest. Dean Manzies, how you doing post
- 0:34race? Thanks, Ron.
- 0:35Yeah, doing well. It's nice to see you this
- 0:37morning. Yeah, I was maybe doing some
- 0:40illegal pacemaking on the bike. I might have a chance with that
- 0:44one. I.
- 0:45Didn't hear that. How are you?
- 0:51Pacemaking and the short course. There we go.
- 0:55There we go. No, I'm good, I'm good after a
- 1:01big week or running. So yeah, nice to just sit down
- 1:04now on a Sunday and just relax. I bet it feels better this week
- 1:07having already got your long run done and not thinking about
- 1:10having to go out after the recording.
- 1:12Yeah, even though where I'm from, I'm from this place called
- 1:15Mead and like Dublin is like did like county next to us.
- 1:19And I went into Dublin to do my long run around this, like
- 1:22massive big park. And then, yeah, Phoenix Park,
- 1:26Yeah. And when I tell you it lashed
- 1:29for the full hour and 50 minutes, it lashed.
- 1:32And Mead, there wasn't a drop around.
- 1:35I was like, for God's sake. Someone gone.
- 1:39All solo. Shit.
- 1:41Just me and my thoughts. 27° and pump and pump and rain.
- 1:46I'd say it was like 20, the heat wave, it's still lingering but
- 1:51it's just not as sunny now. I don't get the time.
- 1:55The the listener's been loving this, the climate band, so you
- 1:58know it's. Because it's real, it's not bad.
- 2:06Anyway, it was a bit of go on. Sorry, Ron.
- 2:09Now you go, you go. Oh no, I was just going to say
- 2:11there was a bit of climate chat ahead of the race on this
- 2:14morning's race and it knew there was like a Perth where the
- 2:17voodoo doll that I would have been working on to try and
- 2:20sabotage the the morning, but fortunately it did hold out.
- 2:25I got it instead. Karmic Universe.
- 2:30It was quite, I mean, we'll talk about the weather when you can
- 2:33recap the race. I guess we have a huge episode
- 2:38coming up. So a bit of a structure to lay
- 2:40out ahead of it. We've got some results from here
- 2:43there and everywhere really. We've got London Diamond League,
- 2:46there's a couple of European under 20 threes races.
- 2:50There was meetings in Madrid, in Belgium and in Italy.
- 2:54Throughout Europe. We've got running news topics,
- 2:56including the highly anticipated conversation around Ruth Chapman
- 3:01Gassich being suspended. We've got the Sydney Marathon
- 3:05men's elite field and a World Athletics Championships
- 3:09qualification breakdown. Because I want to talk about
- 3:12this because it's a topic that I've been confused about or not
- 3:16certain about in the past. When people are talking about
- 3:18standards and they're in or they're out, I've never really
- 3:20understood properly how it works and we talk about it often, so
- 3:24forth. It might be cool to give some
- 3:26context and break it down. We've got a YouTube Diaries
- 3:30which we haven't actually spoken about off air, which one we're
- 3:32going to go with. So we'll see where we land.
- 3:35And we do have a double trouble. I can confirm this week.
- 3:39If the boys haven't got one, I've got one up my sleeve.
- 3:42So you're good with that agenda, lads?
- 3:44All. Right, sweet.
- 3:46I also just want to thank, thank all the listeners for tuning in
- 3:49and being back with us for another week.
- 3:51So hopefully you're enjoying the ride because we are definitely.
- 3:55So I'm going to talk about these, these qualification
- 3:58standards before we go through the results because it might
- 4:00just give some important context for when we're hearing these
- 4:03results and who's run, which times and whether they're in or
- 4:06they're out. So there's a defined number of
- 4:09athletes eligible for each event, and that differs based on
- 4:13the distance. For example, for the 1500
- 4:15meters, there's 56 spots, for the 5010 thousand, there's only
- 4:2042 spots, and for the marathon, there's a hundred spots.
- 4:23Now there's two main ways of actually qualifying, and that's
- 4:27either running the World Athletics to find standard or
- 4:30getting in through your World Athletics ranking.
- 4:33And now World Athletics have set these standards up so that they
- 4:37want around 50% of people to hit the auto qualifier and 50% to go
- 4:42in through their ranking. So that's why often people will
- 4:45talk about the standard being difficult to meet.
- 4:48It's kind of done deliberately. I don't know why they only want
- 4:5150% of people to hit it, but that's what they're going for.
- 4:55I thought part of the motivation was to encourage people to,
- 5:00because what they can do with points is the points are both
- 5:02based on how fast you run and then where you run those times.
- 5:06And so I think it's to try and, and so depending on the quality,
- 5:09it's to give mates that create the really good mates are able
- 5:13to offer more bonus points with their events.
- 5:15And then like Australian, like your national championship gives
- 5:19bonus points. So I think it's to then
- 5:21encourage athletes to 1 compete at their like national champs,
- 5:25which it's like in Australia, it's been super effective.
- 5:27Like you would not see all these US based athletes coming, you
- 5:31know, coming all the way to Perth to run a track mate.
- 5:34Would it not be for the fact that it helps them qualify for
- 5:39major championships? And then yeah, sort of the the
- 5:41competitions themselves, when they put on these huge label
- 5:44events, it sort of gives them like greater standing and allows
- 5:48them to offer more points. So the tracks slight better
- 5:50fields. Yeah, that's true and fair.
- 5:53And I guess the the time based element encourages people to run
- 5:56fast as well. So not just racing for position
- 5:59and placement in these races, but also get after the times and
- 6:02the records. But I think Stephen Scullion, he
- 6:06came like he ran Dublin Marathon a couple of years ago and he
- 6:10was, it was like to try and get points for Paris.
- 6:13But him winning the Dublin Marathon and running to 11 was
- 6:19the equivalent of running, let's say like a 209 or something
- 6:23because he wanted the Irish national championships as well.
- 6:26So it's a good way to like sort of like pump up your points,
- 6:29yeah, and get a good qualifying, yeah.
- 6:31That's where it gets a little bit messy as well, because the
- 6:34there's some certain cross country meets which are heavily
- 6:37weighted, aren't there? So people who target them can
- 6:39get like in through the back door.
- 6:41I think you just mentioned for the tank, I think there's only
- 6:4327 spots. I don't think there's 45 because
- 6:46I think it's 3 heats in the 5K of whatever that works out to be
- 6:51to make however many spots it was.
- 6:54And then it's like one straight final, up to 27 people in the
- 6:5710K. So like because like you
- 6:59mentioned, not every event's got the same amount of people in it.
- 7:03I think some events are harder to get into really than others.
- 7:05Like you only have to be. That's where I think the 10K is
- 7:08particularly hard. Well, here's the thing.
- 7:11There's a maximum of three athletes.
- 7:12And this is this is funny when you look at the 10K standings,
- 7:16maximum of three athletes per country allowed to get in,
- 7:20unless your country has a wild card so that you might be the
- 7:23the reigning champion or something along those lines to
- 7:26get a fourth entry. And when you look at the 10K
- 7:28standings in particular, the amount of Kenyans and Ethiopians
- 7:32that are in like the top 304050, but because there's three ahead
- 7:38of them, they can't get in. So the guys who are ranked like
- 7:4170th, 80th, 90th from the respective countries, different
- 7:45countries, European countries, they're getting in.
- 7:47And these Kenyans, Ethiopians who've run 30 seconds faster,
- 7:51they can't get in because there's at least three people
- 7:53faster than them. So the period for achieving
- 7:57these times, they have a qualifying window and that
- 8:00differs again based on the event, but it's split largely by
- 8:04the marathon being a longer window.
- 8:05I guess because of the the individuality of running a
- 8:09marathon, there's less chance to do it.
- 8:11So they give them a longer qualifying period.
- 8:14And then largely the track based events have a shorter window.
- 8:20So most of them are about 12 months or a little, little bit
- 8:23longer up to 18 months. So it's important to note that
- 8:26the the marathon window is actually closed now.
- 8:29So the, I don't know if the selections are finalized, but
- 8:32the rankings are finalized and the all the track window is
- 8:36still open until the end of August, which is why it's
- 8:39incredibly exciting at the minute.
- 8:40But you've got people chasing times and trying to get more
- 8:44points to bump themselves up those rankings.
- 8:47So as Dean alluded to, it's the rankings are done on a points
- 8:50based system and there's a World Athletics algorithm which kind
- 8:56of produces this point score for you for each race.
- 9:00And then your ranking is based on your average of your best 3
- 9:03results during that period. And also as we said, the meets
- 9:07are categorized from F all the way up to from F, it goes EDCBA
- 9:13and then the top one being OW, which interestingly stands for
- 9:17Olympics or Worlds. And depending on which category
- 9:20meet you're at is how many kind of the weight that goes towards
- 9:24you score or your time there. So interestingly enough, when
- 9:28you look at the marathon with the being 100 positions,
- 9:30qualifying time is two O 630. And for context, only 31 people
- 9:35ran that standard. So if we're looking at that 5050
- 9:38split with that, it was only a 31% split.
- 9:41So that means that 69 positions are open via the world ranking.
- 9:46And as I said about different countries having different
- 9:48numbers of people in those rankings.
- 9:51So Australia have got 3 in this because Andy Buchanan in the
- 9:55men's ran the standard, Tim Vincent was ranked 79th and
- 10:01visit Liam Boudin was is the other guy isn't he?
- 10:03He he was in the rankings there whereas GB only have a male
- 10:06caress in there because of his British Championships win in
- 10:12London Marathon last year. He didn't win the marathon but
- 10:15it's the British champs and Ireland have got 2IN.
- 10:19I mean I've never heard of either of these marathoners to
- 10:21be fair. Owen Hikohasso and I didn't know
- 10:25the other guy's name. It would be Peter Lynch.
- 10:27He ran like 209 low in Hamburg there earlier on in the year and
- 10:32Hiko won Dublin. Well, I think he came.
- 10:34He won the Irish, Dublin, the Irish Marathon Championships
- 10:38last year in like again like 209 something.
- 10:40So Hiko would have trained like Dublin Track Club, which is
- 10:44linked to the Melbourne Track Club and I think he spends most
- 10:48of his time out in Ethiopia doing whatever they do out there
- 10:50now so. So yeah, just a bit of an overt
- 10:55condean. I thought with the the rankings,
- 10:59maybe it's different for say world champs, but I thought for
- 11:02the 8 and 1500 it was your average of your best 5
- 11:06performances equals your ranking score.
- 11:08And then for the 5K it's average of your best three.
- 11:11And then for that the tenor marathon, it's average of your
- 11:13best 2. Like I think as you change in
- 11:16distance, the number of events that count towards your world
- 11:19rank score changes. We sort of talk sick, you know,
- 11:23because you can do a lot of shorter events, whereas you can
- 11:25only run, you know, a couple of marathons a year and then
- 11:28different events can count towards your ranking score.
- 11:31Like it's not like for the 1500 it has to be 15 hundreds or
- 11:35miles. I think you can like other
- 11:37events at score well I think. Yeah, it's very complicated
- 11:40system, but hopefully that breaks it down somewhat for
- 11:43people. So leads us nicely into the
- 11:47results and Owen is going to talk about London Diamond
- 11:49League. Yeah, so Lynn was on Saturday
- 11:54evening for me and like absolutely stacked fails.
- 11:59So we, we'll start off by the men's 1500 and three of us sort
- 12:05of we had a we also each picked someone who we thought was going
- 12:10to win. Ryan, who did you pick?
- 12:11I think I said K in the end. Dean, who did you pick?
- 12:14Did you pick anyone? No, I said on the I said it was
- 12:17too hard. I like, like going into the
- 12:19race, I just couldn't decide. I felt like, like Jake Wightman,
- 12:25like he'd been tearing up the training track, hadn't he?
- 12:27And then Josh Kerr, like who said who said on the group chat
- 12:33something about like Josh Kerr when he generally talks, he's
- 12:36fit. Me.
- 12:38Yeah. And so like, and then and then
- 12:41George Mills had just run, what, 328 or something.
- 12:44So I was like, I didn't know who to pick.
- 12:46I figured it'd be one of those 3, but I couldn't pick tell you
- 12:48which one. So we'll give you Robert Farkin
- 12:54anyway. It was won by this young Kenyan
- 12:59lad, he's apparently he's 18 and Kowich Fanuel Kipzogi in 328
- 13:06which is actually at meet record.
- 13:08Second was Josh Kerr in three 2937 and 3rd was Isaac Nader in
- 13:14331. So other notable mentions Jake
- 13:18Whiteman 4 to Jude Thomas in fifth in 332, Elliott Giles in
- 13:246th, Admiral Spencer in 8th, Oli Whore in 11th and unfortunately
- 13:30Cam Myers in 13th. But I'm coming.
- 13:34I think it was with hundred 200 to go, 250 to go and there was a
- 13:38fall. So George Mills got caught up
- 13:42with Cam Myers, Robert Farrakhan Oli whore got caught up in it.
- 13:46So that really ruled out them boys.
- 13:49But that glad it won at Coach Fanuel, Jeanie Mackie, he put
- 13:55one into Josh Kerr, Genie Mac, some kick on him and did you
- 13:59guys watch it? I did, yeah.
- 14:02They, they set it up pretty well with the pacemaking, didn't
- 14:05they? And I think was it George Mills
- 14:07that went with the was behind the rabbits and then there was
- 14:11behind him and they're all pretty well strung out.
- 14:14This could be, I don't know, my double, double Trouble, but I
- 14:17don't know, Just George Mills seemed to get into more than the
- 14:20average person's number of fools, but he's fallen.
- 14:23So many times. Yeah, well, and he was.
- 14:27I was watching YouTube last week and he said he has a beer the
- 14:30night before a race. Maybe.
- 14:33Yeah, maybe he's drunk. Yeah, because like, I don't
- 14:36know, he he was going backwards and then he caused a huge pile
- 14:39up for like forever. Any other than I think the top
- 14:42two maybe like even Jake Whiteman who finished fourth, I
- 14:45think was a little bit caught up by it, wasn't he?
- 14:48Yeah, I'm not sure. What do you think?
- 14:50By that point, Mills was starting to go a little bit
- 14:53backwards because he'd done a lot of the lead and then it's
- 14:55kind of killed Whiteman and obviously Myers as well, because
- 14:59they were coming through, weren't they?
- 15:01Yeah, it would have been interesting to see how Cam Myers
- 15:04would have finished that after he was coming up really, really
- 15:06nice, but then just got, unfortunately he got caught up.
- 15:09But that's racing, isn't it? Yeah, it is, yeah.
- 15:11That I, I feel like that was one of my ex and the the other one
- 15:16was like, I don't know that. Did you hear the commentators
- 15:18before they were talking about the three British athletes that
- 15:21were in the race that we sort of spoken about?
- 15:24And then there was like that I think they'd make up three of
- 15:26the top six fastest ever. And the other three of the top 6
- 15:29being like Mo Farah, is it? Steve Cram and Sebco were all in
- 15:34the crowd as well. And and sort of lights, all the
- 15:37six sort of greatest smilers are all present.
- 15:40And sort of it was sort of hyped up to be this really big
- 15:43showdown and the like young, the 18 year old Kenyan athlete sort
- 15:48of stole the show. And I don't know, I just felt
- 15:51like in, in light of some of the recent news, I just, I don't
- 15:54know, didn't know how to feel about it.
- 15:55I just felt like there was like a, a special moment for like the
- 15:58London Diamond League. Maybe, I don't know, didn't
- 16:01quite feel as special as what it could have been.
- 16:02Say with Josh, say if Josh Kerr, which he looked really good
- 16:05right by 1 athlete, I would have you know, I was pretty excited
- 16:09for him to win. Yeah, Ruth Chapman Gathich has
- 16:11done this Fanwell Coetch absolutely no favours at all if
- 16:15if all's well in his camp. Has she?
- 16:18But yeah, the way he was able to pull away because it looked like
- 16:21Josh was going to come past him at one point, didn't it?
- 16:23And then he just got this insane stride out of nowhere and was
- 16:27like pumping and driving his arms and just moved away
- 16:30completely. And Josh is probably thinking
- 16:32like, what we got to do here. Like I've I've had a kick left
- 16:36in me and I've delivered it and it's done nothing.
- 16:39Like I think if it Jacob Inger Britain still comes second to
- 16:43this Efaniel Koich guy. Like he pulled up before the
- 16:46line as well. Yeah, it's.
- 16:48And he's 18. And he's 18, yeah.
- 16:54As as per official records. Yeah, there's.
- 16:57A little bit of doubt floating around about that age, isn't it?
- 17:00Yeah, of course. Because he's already ran 327
- 17:03this year as well. That guy his.
- 17:05PB is 3/27/72. And there was another angle I
- 17:10wanted to mention from this. So going into it, Jude Thomas
- 17:14had the qualifier and so does Ollie Hall and obviously Cam
- 17:18Myers does too. So there was eyes on Adam
- 17:21Spencer because he was yet to have the auto qualifier.
- 17:25So he needed to hit the time, but then also potentially beat
- 17:29Jude Thomas and or Ollie Hall. So he's run the time, but but
- 17:34Jude's finished ahead of him, but Olly Hall, who's got like a
- 17:37331 or something like a faster qualifying time, has finished
- 17:40below him. So I think it just leaves a lot
- 17:44of uncertainty around that selection because he's put
- 17:47himself in the mix essentially. Yeah.
- 17:49So. So if you were to pick based on
- 17:51that race and assuming Cam doesn't fall over, who would you
- 17:53pick? Hypothetical.
- 17:57I'll pick Cam Meyer. It's 3 isn't it?
- 18:00I'm picking Cam Meyers, Jude Thomas and Ali Hor.
- 18:06Same to you, Ron. Well, I think Cam's a walk,
- 18:09isn't he? Like he's straight in and then
- 18:11Jude seems to be in the best form.
- 18:13Like he's just recently run the standard and now he's racing
- 18:16well and stuff as well. So he goes, but then.
- 18:19I don't know like. Ollie, like he's run a good
- 18:22time, but isn't really off here much like recently, does he?
- 18:26And like, Adam Spencer's a good championship racer.
- 18:29Like he got into the semis or something.
- 18:31And in one of the major championships before, hasn't he
- 18:34like was the only one to get out the heat?
- 18:37And then now he's got the time. He won nationals over here.
- 18:41And you you're saying Cams have walked because he won nationals
- 18:44or because of the four he's in? Yeah, I don't know, maybe I'm
- 18:46just buying, buying into his his hype a bit too much, but he has
- 18:50been running well all year I guess, hasn't he?
- 18:53And he's starting to like be competitive in these like major
- 18:56European mates. Yeah.
- 18:58And each country, you know, like World Athletics, you have the
- 19:01auto standard and then points. But I think each country then it
- 19:04has its own selection policy and criteria.
- 19:07And I'm pretty sure winning nationals and running the auto
- 19:10standard, I thought maybe that guarantees your selection.
- 19:12I think maybe has in the past. So I think maybe he is a Walker
- 19:16anyway. So who would you land on, Dean?
- 19:19Yeah, same. I think the same, yeah, based on
- 19:23how it's going. Ollie, Ollie, Horace.
- 19:26Like Jude, Ollie and Kim. Yeah.
- 19:30Who got picked last year? Who got picked for the Paris
- 19:33Olympics? Who?
- 19:33Was Adam Spencer won nationals? So he went and Cam Myers missed
- 19:39out and it was Stewie, wasn't it?
- 19:42Oh yeah, it's fine. So Jude was not in the picture.
- 19:45Yeah, Cam was already selected. I'm just looking.
- 19:48But yeah, it's a good point, like all these races everyone's
- 19:51racing for, like there's races within races which makes the
- 19:55these mates super exciting. And I think because Josh Kerr
- 19:58won the did he win worlds? Yeah, he's the reigning 1500
- 20:03meter world champion, isn't he? From 2023.
- 20:06Yeah, so I think in his national champs coming up now, he's
- 20:09actually under the 5K. Yeah, because he's a auto
- 20:12selected for the for the 1500, Yeah.
- 20:15OK. So then who are the other two
- 20:16that probably go for the OR is it selection in the in?
- 20:22Yeah, you have to hit a standard and then get selected.
- 20:26Like they're really strict. Yeah.
- 20:28So if you fall, you're out. Hey, like in those?
- 20:31Yeah, yeah, yeah. Because Elliott Giles fell in
- 20:34his 1500s. That's right.
- 20:36Yeah. And then he but he was lucky
- 20:37enough to get selected in the eighth.
- 20:38Yeah, But what does Josh Kerr run for 5K?
- 20:41Probably just sits and kicks and runs 1335.
- 20:45Yeah, what does he run in an LL5K?
- 20:50What's he run like for 3K? He runs something under 3730
- 20:53hasn't he? For 3K?
- 20:54And he's run 62 for the half marathon or something like that.
- 20:57Yeah, I think if he's fully fit under 13 minutes.
- 21:00Yeah. Anyway, I was going to say I
- 21:04don't think he'll have to run fast to win that 5K, but it
- 21:07depends if Mills is doing it or not.
- 21:10But Mills might be the same. He might be already pre selected
- 21:14for the 5K so we might opt for to do the 15 again.
- 21:17Yeah, when is that? That's the end.
- 21:19It's like 3, I think it's either the week, I think USA is 2 weeks
- 21:23away and then the UK ones are three weeks.
- 21:26So it's it's interesting. Good racing.
- 21:29Yeah, right. Moving on to the women's mile.
- 21:32So the men's was a 15 and the women's was a mile.
- 21:36Gudaf Tisigay won this race in 411, which was a meet record,
- 21:42world lead and a national record for Ethiopia.
- 21:45Second was Jess Hull in 413 and 3rd was Ireland's Sarah Healey
- 21:52in M416. Other Noble mentions what would
- 21:57be Linden Hall in 9th. She ran 4/19 for the mile.
- 22:01I'll be Caldwell sort of blew up a little bit and ran 4:20.
- 22:06And yeah, this race was crazy. I want to see gay.
- 22:12She went out so hard. So whatever, I can't do the
- 22:17Irish ones, you can't do the see the Europeans.
- 22:20Wait, so how do you say it? It's a guy.
- 22:23It's a guy, all right? Sick guy.
- 22:25Yeah. She went out hard.
- 22:27And you're 1 Halem I think. Yeah, she came.
- 22:31Yeah, she ended up finishing tenth.
- 22:33She went with her and oh boy, she blew up hard.
- 22:36But yeah, I'd say she had like a good 30 meter, 40 meter gap on
- 22:41the second group and then they slowly, just will slowly wound
- 22:45them in. But umm, Sigai held her off and
- 22:49she had something left in the last 200.
- 22:51But yeah, I thought she was in serious trouble when she I think
- 22:54she ran like a 62nd. First lap.
- 22:57Yeah, yeah, yeah. Which is just running, which is
- 23:01a mile the hard way. Which is that fight to keep yay
- 23:04gone chasing 4 pace like it, you know, no one has ever been able
- 23:09to run at that pace and it's just crazy.
- 23:11Like they've got the pacing lights.
- 23:12They knew like, yeah, I don't know.
- 23:15She she's just wild. But hey, because she she did
- 23:18this was it in the Olympics? I think as well last year.
- 23:21I think she just, I don't know if she wrecked her Olympics, but
- 23:24like she did the 1500 and 5K and she's just, she just sends it
- 23:28like. Just is she the one?
- 23:30On a Tuesday, you know, just going hard.
- 23:34Was was she on the back of Chibet last week in the 5K and
- 23:37then that 200 meters out she's the one who stopped.
- 23:40Yeah. What the hell?
- 23:41She's a crazy like. And then you think when when
- 23:44Jess closes the gap on the bell, you're like, oh, Jess is like
- 23:47time this perfectly. She's going to breeze past.
- 23:49Then she just found something and went again, didn't she?
- 23:52Yeah. Yeah, she's, but that was an
- 23:55area record as well. By Jess Hall By.
- 23:57The way that was lowering her own.
- 24:00Yeah. And weren't they because I think
- 24:02that was the commentators are saying so faith keep you.
- 24:04Aegon has the world record. And then the the the second
- 24:08fastest time until this race just gone for the women's mile
- 24:12was held by Sufan Hassan, I think in like was it 413 or
- 24:17something like I think. And so I think these times might
- 24:19have been at least one or both were inside that as like second
- 24:23like so they go like 2 and four or two and three fastest times
- 24:26for the mile ever, I think. Sad point, it doesn't bode too
- 24:30well for hopefully not like hopefully she's just focusing on
- 24:34Sydney, but the fact that Hassam was ADNS here, hopefully
- 24:38nothing's. Wrong.
- 24:41The next race was the women's 5K, which was won by Elsa Medina
- 24:47in 1430. Then it was Fantea Billena in.
- 24:56This is why, right? You have to read the results,
- 24:59right? Like.
- 24:59I'm glad you're doing this on. I I didn't know the names are so
- 25:03hard. Like said nothing.
- 25:08Yeah, so the winner ran 1430.57, second was 1430.9 and then Rosie
- 25:15Davis came in 3rd in 1431, which was an area record, and George
- 25:21Griffith ran. I think it's Rose Davies, but I
- 25:26don't mind that one. We should get Rosie Davis.
- 25:31You switched the eyes between the 1st and I.
- 25:34Know where? So we're mates.
- 25:35So I call her Rosie. And 5th came Georgia Griffiths
- 25:41in 14. Yeah.
- 25:43Oh yeah. Fifth came Georgia Griffiths in
- 25:471432 which was a PB for her. Hannah Nuttall from England was
- 25:5411th. That was big PB for her in 1439.
- 25:57But all these times are crazy fast guys like all these women
- 26:00are running like in the 1440s for 5K which is the.
- 26:04Standard is 1450, so everyone who's finished the race has run
- 26:08the standard. Wow.
- 26:12Yeah, the girls. George Griffith done so much
- 26:14work in this race. So there was like 2 groups and
- 26:17George Griffith was she didn't go with the lead group so she
- 26:20had like 50 meters to close and she went off by herself and
- 26:24slowly closed that. And yeah, she's rewarded with a
- 26:26massive PB. Next up, men's 800 winner was
- 26:31Manuel Wignani in 142 flat, which was a meet record.
- 26:37Second was Marco Arop in 142.22 which was a season's best for
- 26:43him, 3rd Max Bergen 142.36 which was APB for Max and 4th was
- 26:50Bryce Hoppel in 142.71. Other normal mention, Mark
- 26:56English came seventh in 144.07, Ethan Hussey from the UK 144.3
- 27:03and Ben Patterson would not have been happy with a 146.08.
- 27:10Again, 142 for an 800, Absolutely bonkers.
- 27:14But yeah, that one you only guys fit.
- 27:19Felt like the, the women's 5K was like so much fun to watch.
- 27:22Like in just having a couple of Aussies just keeping up with
- 27:25like a pack of Ethiopians, you know, like it was not at least
- 27:28it was fun that fun to see and like going from 1450s to 1430s
- 27:33like a big jump. So it was pretty cool to have
- 27:35like like 2 Aussies running that fast.
- 27:37Like, I don't know, pretty exciting.
- 27:38Like you think they're now might probably more likely to make the
- 27:41final right for world champs, which is cool.
- 27:45You're thinking Rose Davis could win it at one point, weren't
- 27:48you? Yeah.
- 27:49Yeah, because, you know, she kicks, she can kick super fast.
- 27:51So you sort of like can she? But the the top, was it two or
- 27:55three Ethiopians? They look so good on that back
- 27:58straight in the last lap is just, I would, I don't know,
- 28:01they're pretty classy. So is Georgia Griffiths a 5K
- 28:05runner now? Yeah, well, looks that way.
- 28:07There's been a bit of question marks over recently, hasn't
- 28:09there. But then I think she also ran at
- 28:11800 in the week, like 159 or something as well.
- 28:14So I. Mean, yeah, I don't know, she's
- 28:16kind of like time and isn't she? She's like the Australian record
- 28:19holder for the three Ki think she run like 824 or something.
- 28:23824 and 1432 just just got you on.
- 28:27We'll see, I have a 5K in two weeks.
- 28:33Oh, another note mentioned, was that English girl in insurance
- 28:38or Ryan help? Oh yeah.
- 28:41Yeah. Inez Fitzgerald, She's like 20
- 28:44odd. Is she 20 years old or
- 28:46something? She ran 1439, which was like
- 28:50some UK or European record. Under 20.
- 28:53Under 20, yeah. Yeah, crazy stuff under 20 year
- 28:58old. Did you guys, did you guys find
- 29:00that 800 was just a bit like after last week's 1 was just not
- 29:04that exciting like cuz they built the last?
- 29:06Was it Monaco up? That's not as excited.
- 29:09You're thinking when Yoni had lost it at one point, aren't you
- 29:14looking how did Marco a Rock got got himself into the lead and
- 29:17he's in lane one and he's still, he's a massive guy.
- 29:21Like he looks like a buddy, A basketball player or an NFL
- 29:24player or something. And he's managed to leave space
- 29:27on the inside of his own lane for one.
- 29:29You need to squeeze back the inside.
- 29:33That's London net. Is that the last big Diamond
- 29:35League before? There's a big lull now, is
- 29:37there? Because there's going to be
- 29:39nationals for all the countries, and then they'll probably just
- 29:42go away for before Tokyo. Yeah, it was seemed good though,
- 29:45didn't it? Like it was sold out and like
- 29:47the atmosphere and stuff like that.
- 29:48That's the type of meet you need, isn't it?
- 29:51To kind of, yeah, a little bit export.
- 29:54But guys, even the little meats in Ireland there last week and
- 29:57like they were all like packed as well.
- 29:59It's crazy how like popular and big like running has has gotten
- 30:04like even like people that don't run will just rock up and like
- 30:06actually go and watch the watch the event.
- 30:10It's crazy. So I was through the rest of the
- 30:16results from the week before, the main events of London.
- 30:20So on Tuesday last week, or might have been even earlier
- 30:23than Tuesdays might have been Last Sunday, Jack Rayner had his
- 30:26first race in a while in a 3000 meters in Marseille.
- 30:30He ran 748 high, which I think he would have been not too happy
- 30:35about because I think he mentioned he wanted to run 730
- 30:39something and he was in finishing seventh behind Scott
- 30:43BT of the UK sort of context. He's part of that Team Macau,
- 30:47who we've done YouTube Diaries on before.
- 30:50He ran a 7:45 for 3rd. Interesting here because Jack
- 30:55has the standard from the indoors back in Boston and so
- 31:00does Kai Robinson. And obviously as we know, Seth
- 31:03O'Donnell has just gone to Europe now with his his new Nike
- 31:07deal chasing sometimes and he started to run.
- 31:10I think he's done a 15 and 337 and a 5K and 1313 or something
- 31:18the other night. Is it 1713?
- 31:20Seventeen. Yeah.
- 31:21Guys, did you see and wear the full Nike on the plane?
- 31:28Did you see where singlet? Like singlet please.
- 31:33Like sitting in a plane because he was afraid his bag was going
- 31:36to get lost or something. So, so like often you you're
- 31:42told like take as carry on your racing flats and stuff just in
- 31:46case you lose your bag. You know where.
- 31:49Yeah. No, no, I'm not saying we're in
- 31:53the actual race day kit to ensure that you don't forget it.
- 31:57You know, I'm sure there's a bit on that YouTube video where it
- 32:00cuts to him like in the seat on the flight and it's only like a
- 32:05very brief image, but I'm sure he's got arm sleeves on as well.
- 32:13Oh, he's so. Funny.
- 32:15And then his class like his manager or someone rings him and
- 32:19this is on the YouTube as well. He's on the phone and the guy's
- 32:22like, oh, this, There's a bit of chatter online about you wearing
- 32:25the race kit on the flight, you know, some boy.
- 32:32But yeah, be interesting to see how he goes in his pursuit of
- 32:35the standards. So he's running out of time, but
- 32:38I'm sure he's going to cram a few races.
- 32:39Then moving on to the European Under 23 Championships, which I
- 32:43don't actually know where these have been held, I haven't
- 32:46looked, but I've seen that an Irish girl won the 10,000
- 32:50meters, Owen, Annika Thompson. Yeah, I've seen that as well.
- 32:54And I've never heard of that kid before in my whole life, which
- 32:56is, yeah. Wow, She must be.
- 32:58I'm presuming she's in College in America because normally they
- 33:00go over young and like to get really good and you only hear on
- 33:03them then when they come back and do these like, sort of major
- 33:05championships. But yeah, like 3231 for like a
- 33:10championship race as well. Like that's crazy.
- 33:13There was a men's 5000 meters which was won by Nails Laros
- 33:17which if we recall back to the pre classic mile, he's the guy
- 33:21who closed from absolutely miles back.
- 33:24So no surprises that he's won in an under 23 field there.
- 33:29But he's run 1344 to be again an Irishman, Nick Griggs in second
- 33:35and a Brit Will Barnaco in 3rd. Yeah, Nick Griggs is pretty
- 33:39legit his I think that's his like 6th European medal and he's
- 33:43like again 20 to 21. So yeah, like Larus is just like
- 33:48a level above all them log again like he's going.
- 33:50Is he gone? Is that Nick Griggs?
- 33:53Is he at AUS college or was? No.
- 33:56So he's he's from up north in Ireland, but he's like just
- 34:01based in Ireland. He's sponsored by Puma.
- 34:03OK, say that full time professional.
- 34:06Yeah, yeah, yeah, absolutely. Isn't he the guy who's like best
- 34:09on the scene when he was like 16 or something?
- 34:12Ran a stupid mile. Yeah, and he had the park run
- 34:15world record as well there for a little bit until they took them
- 34:17away. I always get confused when I say
- 34:19his name, like am I familiar with him as an athlete?
- 34:22But then him you know the Will Griggs that always comes into my
- 34:31head and the women's 800 still in the European under 23
- 34:35championships. I don't know this girl as an
- 34:38athlete, but I've seen the time and I thought is worthy ever
- 34:40mentioned. So Audrey wear out a Swiss girl
- 34:44as round 15742 to win that. So that's the fifth fastest time
- 34:49across seniors in 2025. Like 157 wins, most 800 meter
- 34:54races regardless of the meet. So we'll we'll keep an eye out
- 34:57for her in Tokyo, especially because the the women's 8 is
- 35:01potentially a little bit weak this year.
- 35:02Like we've seen Georgia Bell, Georgia Hunter Bell win in
- 35:06London on Saturday. So it's open to anyone unless
- 35:10Keely comes back firing. She might do double hay that she
- 35:17the Olympics last year. Yeah, she can run them both,
- 35:20can't she, to be fair. And then I think typically the
- 35:24800 is there secondary event, but then winning that last night
- 35:28and with the lack of field potentially might sway, are you
- 35:31right? Yeah, Yeah.
- 35:33I think that they said it was like the second is the second
- 35:35fastest time this year. 156 is like rapid.
- 35:38It's funny, like when you look at the old time lists for that,
- 35:41the fastest are from like the 80s and the 90s and apparently
- 35:44there's just crazy doping going on with like the Russians and
- 35:47the Chinese wasn't there. Yeah, there's totally hope.
- 35:51Yeah, probably not the same gear based on the size of some of the
- 35:54athletes back then. Maybe.
- 35:57Just to note, there's also still to come a women's 1500 and 5000,
- 36:02which haven't been at the time of recording, and a men's 800
- 36:05meters, which includes A Brit, Henry Jonas, who's ran 14144.1
- 36:11in his in his heat and he's up against Niels Laros in the final
- 36:15of that. So interesting to see how that
- 36:17plays out. Moving on to the European meets
- 36:20in midweek, like there's literally something on every
- 36:22night at the minute. It's so hard to keep up with it.
- 36:25But there was a Grand Prix Brescia in Italy and there we
- 36:30had Rose Davis was in this 1500 meters.
- 36:33She's around four O 9. Sophie O'Sullivan was in behind
- 36:36her in 5th place with the 4:10. And there's another Irish girl
- 36:40there, Jodie McCann, 413. There was a women's 800 meters
- 36:45again, Australians in there, Georgia Griffith and oh, this is
- 36:48the 159 I was referencing. She's around 159.75 for a fourth
- 36:53place finish. So I mean, these guys who are
- 36:56over in Europe, like they must do some travel to be fair
- 36:58because they're moving from city to city almost like every other
- 37:01day. I don't know if you have noticed
- 37:03it but especially following like the Toms and stuff over there,
- 37:07their journey there seems to be a new country every day.
- 37:11So I commend these people who managed to stay at peak fitness
- 37:14whilst going through this travel as well.
- 37:16It's kind of like a underrated aspect of it.
- 37:20And sort of to your point earlier about the World
- 37:23Athletics quota system, and like, I think the creation of
- 37:27the quota system and the creation of a split between
- 37:30ranking points and auto times means that you're going to have
- 37:34all these athletes wanting to get to the fastest meets they
- 37:37can and therefore making the meets as as quality as they can
- 37:41to try and as they chase the points ahead of peaking for a
- 37:44world champ. So it's sort of, yeah, like all
- 37:47the Aussie athletes finish their, we finish our track in
- 37:50April. And then you've got all this
- 37:51time over in European summer going to these meets.
- 37:54But I would imagine it's the same the world over.
- 37:56Everyone's trying to get into these competitions, which, which
- 37:59because of the world ranking system being what it is, people
- 38:03are incentivized to want to get into them, which is just which
- 38:06it just makes makes for better athletics, which is yeah, I, I
- 38:10really like how they how the system works at the minute.
- 38:14Over to Belgium on Wednesday night in Liege, there was a
- 38:17women's 5000 meters where Mordy Skyring ran the qualifier.
- 38:22So she's run 1449.93 to win the race.
- 38:25So she's dipped under the qualifier by 7 hundredths of a
- 38:29second there. I'm not sure if that might be a
- 38:32first or maybe she's done it once before sub 15.
- 38:35But yeah, incredible run to get the time there.
- 38:39Izzy back. Doyle was also in that race just
- 38:424 seconds behind that with a 1453 and another Australian not
- 38:47rule was back in 6th in 15 O 9. So I'm not sure if maybe Izzy's
- 38:53attention might turn towards a 10K now, but off the top of my
- 38:57head I'm not sure what big 10K meets are coming up.
- 39:01There's probably another one, is there not?
- 39:03Nah, on the track. Yeah.
- 39:06Nah, because they're all there's no meats now because of the
- 39:08national championships coming up.
- 39:09So I'd say this was like the sort of last chance and it's.
- 39:12Interesting that we're like other.
- 39:14Sorry, I want you there. There was a fast meet in Belgium
- 39:18last night. It was something like Hudson
- 39:20something. I'm surprised she didn't.
- 39:22You'll come on to it later. I'm surprised she didn't pick
- 39:25that one because that is just like a faster meet.
- 39:29But yeah, I don't know what she'd do now.
- 39:31Yeah, with Rose and Georgia running the time last night as
- 39:35well, and then Maudie's got it there.
- 39:37It's tough. So she's back on the marathon
- 39:39train. Well, it's not bad to fall back
- 39:42on, is it? She's she's got the entry there,
- 39:45but she was just toying with whether she was going to take it
- 39:47or do one of the track ones, I think.
- 39:50So what does she have to qualify for the 10?
- 39:52No. I don't think anyone does like
- 39:54yeah, I'll have to check the quota ranking system says, but I
- 39:59don't think, what is it, 3020? I think something silly.
- 40:02And again, it's sort of set so fast because it's like a 27
- 40:07person. Quota to fill, you know, so then
- 40:09you're trying to just get 13. If it's 50%, you're trying to
- 40:13set a standard that only 13 people run based on three per
- 40:17country. I mean, it's probably 30 between
- 40:19Ethiopia and Kenya that run it, but outside of that that that's
- 40:236. I mean, looking at the rankings,
- 40:25it says she's in at the minute. So you've got Lauren Ryan is in
- 40:2916th on the on the rankings list.
- 40:31Like across the world. You forgot about her because
- 40:33she's based in America. Then Rose Davis is is in there
- 40:38in 23rd, but potentially she might just look to do the five
- 40:42you don't know and then is he's 25th.
- 40:46So I mean, I don't know whether these are due to be updated or
- 40:49not, but hopefully. So at the moment for the 5K it's
- 40:52Lauren Ryan, Georgia Griffiths and Rosie Davis.
- 40:58Is it? No, were you?
- 40:59You're talking about the 10K then, right?
- 41:01I was reading the ten. Yeah, in the five.
- 41:05It might be what you've just said there.
- 41:06Oh, Linden Hall's got got one as well.
- 41:09Sheesh. Yeah, we'll see.
- 41:11Let's, let's leave it up to the selectors.
- 41:17There was also a men's 1500 meters at that meet in Belgium,
- 41:21which was run by a Belgian athletes.
- 41:24But in second was Henry Mcclucky, who if we think back
- 41:27to last week's episode, he won. Was it the meet that you were
- 41:31at? Owen?
- 41:31He won the 3000 there in a very quick time.
- 41:35So he's run 335 for 2nd. And then Carl Davis Australia
- 41:41had his first of two 330 sixes in quick succession because he
- 41:46also ran in Madrid on Saturday night and ran another 336.
- 41:51There was another Belgian meet in actually don't know
- 41:54whereabouts in Belgium it was. It was the one I was on about in
- 41:58Hudson something. It's a really fast one.
- 42:01Yeah. So those boys have obviously
- 42:03been after the 5000 meter qualifier there, haven't they?
- 42:05Because the guy Isaac Camelli, who's born is around 30 and O,
- 42:081.39 and I think the times 30 and O. 131 yeah, that's brutal.
- 42:16Brian Faye was second in 30 and OA.
- 42:18He's got he's edging closer and further down was Dara Mcelhenny
- 42:23in 1312 and Scott Beatty Debris 1327 and also James W 1334.
- 42:31So the British guys haven't haven't got much going on over
- 42:36the 5000 meters at the minute. Like formerly James West has
- 42:40been like national champion right up there in the
- 42:43international scene as well. But it seems like only George
- 42:46Mills can kind of do it at the minute.
- 42:50Well, Scott B has run thirteen O 3 or 4, hasn't he?
- 42:54Has he run that low? I knew he's run in the teens, I
- 42:57thought. But.
- 42:58I think he's run super low. Yeah.
- 43:00So on his day, he'll be there thereabouts.
- 43:03But it's just like guys 13 O1. It's just it's crazy fast.
- 43:08Like it's it's crazy. It's not fair.
- 43:13Yeah, yeah. It's important to take a step
- 43:15back when you're reading these results and almost saying it in
- 43:18a manner of like, come on, guys, why aren't you running faster?
- 43:20But it's just because like the the other ridiculous people that
- 43:24you have to compare them to when you're on that national and
- 43:26international stage. But we're probably going to
- 43:29touch on it like later, like the people who are doping are
- 43:34raising these standards to like a ridiculous level that like are
- 43:38actually not achievable. It's got a knock on effect the
- 43:41whole way down the ladder, which is it can be detrimental to
- 43:45someone's running career like because the standards are like
- 43:48let's say Dan Mcalheny, 1312 is a really, really, really good
- 43:51time if them boys aren't weren't doping and running 1240s and
- 43:571230s. Like the standard will be like
- 44:001310 or 1315, which is normal. It's just that domino effect it
- 44:04has on everyone. Yeah, 1305, he has run there.
- 44:08You're right. 1304 even. Good segue indeed.
- 44:13Does that bring us to it? She's here we are.
- 44:16So for anyone who's been sleeping under a rock for the
- 44:21past week, Ruth Chapman Gasich, who's the women's world record
- 44:25holder in the marathon, who's run 20950 something in Chicago
- 44:30last year, has been suspended for taking a masking agent.
- 44:36Wasn't it? It's hydro hydrochlor or
- 44:39something. So she hasn't been caught with
- 44:41EPO or any of the actual like drugs that enhance performance,
- 44:45but it's the thing that masks these things.
- 44:48So it doesn't look good either way.
- 44:50So Chris Chavez from Citius Mag posted the timeline on on X in
- 44:55the week and it kind of sums it up and gives a really good
- 44:57picture as to what's gone on. So I'll whiz through it and then
- 45:01we can we can get you each other's opinion.
- 45:03So October 13th, it was where she ran that ridiculous world
- 45:07record. And then there was all sorts of
- 45:10chaos because she was asked about it almost a bit indirectly
- 45:14in the press conference afterwards, someone said about
- 45:17the number of dopant cases in Kenya.
- 45:19What would you say to someone who is a bit sceptical?
- 45:23And her response was, I don't have any idea.
- 45:26And the journalists then followed it up by saying some
- 45:29people might think that's too fast, what would you say?
- 45:32And she said she just said, you know, people must talk.
- 45:35People must talk, but I don't know.
- 45:39So I mean, looking at all this with hindsight, like it's, it's
- 45:41hard to read, isn't it really? Then a couple of days later,
- 45:45Kenyan parliament's actually came out and they were, they
- 45:48were kind of slagging this guy off the journalist who'd asked
- 45:51the questions, demanding an apology and like kind of
- 45:55legitimizing what Ruth had done and asking everyone to praise
- 45:58her and all this sorts of nonsense.
- 46:01So it doesn't make them look good as federation or an
- 46:05organization, however they would picture themselves now that
- 46:09they've defended that and all this has come out.
- 46:12On December 11th, the world record was ratified, which is
- 46:15the actual sad part about this because they haven't actually
- 46:18caused it open at the time. It's been after the fact.
- 46:22I think it was around Lisbon in February.
- 46:24So that means that despite all of these findings, her world
- 46:29record, her 209, actually stands and is still by definition
- 46:34legitimate, which is like completely insane.
- 46:39December 31st she raced to 10K in Madrid and ran 3132, which
- 46:44was slower than what she split 10K through the marathon by over
- 46:47a minute In February. She actually raced, Yeah.
- 46:53I still remember that, yeah. In February she said she'll be
- 46:57racing the Lisbon half and in March she ran one O 620 at the
- 47:01Lisbon half which is slower than her one O 4 O2 PB and the one O
- 47:06416 that she split in Chicago. Later on in March she test
- 47:12positive for Hydrochlorothiazide.
- 47:16April the 3rd the test is reported to the AIU.
- 47:19April the 16th, she's notified of the positive test and was
- 47:23interviewed by the AIU in Kenya two days later, which if you can
- 47:27piece all this together, April the 18th, she withdrew from the
- 47:31London Marathon. So remember when that was a news
- 47:33item and she said I'm not in the physical or the mental shape or
- 47:38something along those lines, wasn't it?
- 47:41Which just reads so differently now and then.
- 47:45So she's taken her provisional ban from that moment she's like
- 47:49volunteered to start the provisional ban and in reading
- 47:52about it apparently because this masking agent is like on a lower
- 47:57level class of drug as per the AIU rules like it's not EPA or
- 48:02something. The ban only carries 2 years I
- 48:06think. So she's started her two years
- 48:09immediately from April when she like voluntarily accepted it,
- 48:13even though it's only come into place now.
- 48:15So yeah, she'll be back in April 27 with a world record probably
- 48:20still in hand, probably the prize money still there as well,
- 48:23and still be in a 2 times Chicago winner and a World
- 48:28Championships winner. This one like sort of actually
- 48:32made me mad. It was like, I don't know, it
- 48:36just really, really pissed me off.
- 48:37This one, like in that marathon she ran like ridiculous 5K
- 48:41split, I think. Did you run a 5 KPB on A10 KPB
- 48:44in that marathon in Chicago? She ran the 6th fastest half
- 48:48marathon ever. Yeah, and it goes even deeper.
- 48:52Like I'll actually share on our Instagram later, but this Irish
- 48:56lad does a bit of digging and it's like a 10 minute video of
- 48:59him like chatting about it but like her agency.
- 49:02Yeah, I wanted to. Yeah.
- 49:06Because who's she represented by?
- 49:07By? I forget, I've forgotten his.
- 49:09What's his name again? It's.
- 49:11A Francesco Rosa or something? Like that, That's it.
- 49:14Yeah, yeah. Anyway, so I think within the
- 49:17agency, they've had like 5 World Marathon major champions and
- 49:22five have been popped. And when you look at the
- 49:24athletes, who else are a part of that agency, I'm just saying
- 49:27who's a part of the agency now? I'm not saying that they're on
- 49:29Anton Blame Tibet is a part of that agency.
- 49:32Your man Aragawe from Ethiopia at the 5K runner with the lads,
- 49:36he's on in that agency. Like there's some pretty big
- 49:38names there. But the fact that there is like
- 49:42a history of people getting popped, like it's just, it's
- 49:45just not fair. They need to like never be able
- 49:49to. Huge names, right?
- 49:50But they like I, I think like Jemima, is it some gong?
- 49:55Like she won like the 2012 Olympics, I think.
- 49:58And she later test positive. And I still remember watching
- 50:02the women's Olympic marathon, like super excited to watch that
- 50:05watching. But you're watching the person
- 50:07break away and win the race, and now you're just, I don't know,
- 50:11it's sort of the whole complexion of all these races
- 50:13would change, you know, And the moments for people are all gone.
- 50:16Like it's. Yeah, I don't know.
- 50:18It's. Not rotten, isn't it?
- 50:20And it stinks. It's it makes watching it
- 50:23difficult because naturally, like you say, you see that guy
- 50:27beat Josh Kerr on on Saturday and you're like, first thing
- 50:30you're thinking is I wonder, like in six months time will,
- 50:34will we be thinking differently about this guy?
- 50:36Like it's, it's a horrible way to be watching the sport.
- 50:40And the annoying thing is like it's when she actually ran this
- 50:43run, it's like it was so obvious to everyone at the time.
- 50:46Like it kind of was a bit taboo. Like no one really wanted to say
- 50:50it, but everyone's thinking it and now it comes out it's just
- 50:53like, for God's sake. Like we also have to like push
- 50:58on. She has not been caught actually
- 51:00taking the drugs. So they have like finessed the
- 51:03system. They know how to get by.
- 51:05It's just the thing that stops them testing positive like that
- 51:09hydrochlorides, whatever side that I think that makes you like
- 51:13piss. So like you flush it at your
- 51:15system. And so again, she has not tested
- 51:18positive for the drug. She's tested positive for the
- 51:21thing that hides the drug. So yeah, it's just, it's so
- 51:24deep. Kenya is so rotten.
- 51:26And they're just like the the sanctions aren't strong enough.
- 51:30Like if you get popped, you should never be allowed to run
- 51:33again in a competitive race. Give all your money back.
- 51:35This woman, she ran, she won Chicago twice and she got the
- 51:39world record. Like, that is generational
- 51:40wealth for her. She's happy out.
- 51:42She gets 2 year ban. She can train for two years.
- 51:44Chill out. It's just so not fair.
- 51:47And like, yeah. All all your honors should be
- 51:49stripped of you. Like she shouldn't be able to be
- 51:51a Chicago winner, a world winner.
- 51:54And like with the SO she got popped after Chicago so do
- 51:57people just think she magically started taking drugs like after
- 52:00she ran a 209? Like it doesn't make sense.
- 52:03Like strip everything from her. Like poor Emily Sisson, she came
- 52:07second in Chicago in 2022. Could she have been the first
- 52:10woman to ever win like the world, an American world major
- 52:14or American woman or something like that?
- 52:16There's massive knock on effects for everyone and it's just
- 52:18fucking bullshit at this stage. Yeah, not good.
- 52:21And then like, it's like you say that the agents like the coach,
- 52:24whoever he is, like, how is he like still getting away with it
- 52:27and being able to represent athletes?
- 52:30It makes you wonder like, what is going on behind the scenes?
- 52:33Like there's so much evidence just screaming at this guy.
- 52:37And like, why has nothing been done about it properly?
- 52:40Like why? Why is Kenya not been formally
- 52:42investigated in in a deeper level?
- 52:45Oh, and I think I read somewhere that fair enough, she might get
- 52:48some of her earnings stripped, but the percentage that went to
- 52:51the agent doesn't get taken so she gets to keep it.
- 52:55He gets paid, he's done. His job, he got it through the
- 52:57drugs test. It's just, yeah, you can't.
- 53:02And it's terrible for your man. Like that 18 year old kid from
- 53:04Kenya, like he could be just a generation of talent, but now he
- 53:08sort of has dirt on his name because he's from Kenya and you
- 53:11think, oh, what if? Yeah, the thing that she was
- 53:15caught taken Owen, it does it makes you we more so it
- 53:18obviously like flushes it out. And I read that they allow for,
- 53:24I can't remember what the measurement says, but it's 20
- 53:26nanomoles or whatever the measurement says they allow for
- 53:29that in case of like cross contamination and stuff like
- 53:32that. So the amount that they found in
- 53:34her was 3800. So it was 190 times over the
- 53:40allowed. Limits like come on.
- 53:43And I don't get why is only released like there during the
- 53:46week when she was like actually caught mid-april.
- 53:48I think just in case of you don't want to, you don't want to
- 53:53allege someone stoked when you're not like I think there's
- 53:56a, a process that has to follow. I think after the positive
- 53:58sample, before they're like, like, let's say they think they
- 54:01have a positive sample, but it's later proven not to be in the
- 54:04case that's thrown out. Then I think there's the right
- 54:06for privacy rather than incorrectly alert someone.
- 54:09I think. Have you guys seen that?
- 54:12Sorry. There.
- 54:14You go, did you guys ever, do you ever listen to the Real
- 54:16Science of Sport podcast? Did you ever hear the one when
- 54:20they tried to quantify her improvement and try and see if
- 54:25it was the shoes and what maybe made sense in terms of like how
- 54:30it whether or not the performance was actually true or
- 54:34real? Yeah, it was a very fair debate.
- 54:37Yeah. And these guys doing a great job
- 54:39of just sort of trying to bring clients to the to the discussion
- 54:44and they tried to quantify her personal improvement and tried
- 54:48to see if it was possible and sort of left it for listeners to
- 54:53decide whether or not at the time we thought the performance
- 54:56was a fair performance. It was, yeah.
- 54:58Really interesting discussion. So if anyone's, you know, like
- 55:02you'll be interested to listen back to that with the benefit of
- 55:04hindsight. And then just a couple of days
- 55:06ago, they released like a little emergency podcast reflection.
- 55:10I think post that, I've not listened to it yet, but I think
- 55:13that'll be an interesting listen as well because those guys do
- 55:16their best to sort of just commentate on sports as like
- 55:19sort of leading experts as sports scientists.
- 55:22So yeah, I'm keen to hear their reflections on that.
- 55:25But I think I remember when they released that podcast sort of
- 55:30where I where I ended up was struggling to see how it was
- 55:34physically, like how how it was possible, Like they sort of
- 55:37presented all these factors and I struggled to walk away with
- 55:40saying it was legitimate. It's funny you say that because
- 55:45I actually did go back and listen to at least parts of it
- 55:48on the back of the news because I thought, same as you, it'd be
- 55:51an interesting reflection with hindsight.
- 55:53And I did and noted a couple of things.
- 55:55And it's annoying because it's like when you listen to it now
- 55:58now in the outcome, it's like screamingly obvious.
- 56:02So they said her performance in that marathon using Jack Daniels
- 56:07formula is equivalent to a sub 4 minute mile for for the women.
- 56:11And obviously we've just seen how Faith Kippy a gone with all
- 56:15of Nikes technological advancements, has got on trying
- 56:18to do that. It's equivalent to 28 O six in
- 56:23the 10,000 meters, which hasn't 29 been broken like once or
- 56:27something or maybe not even And Paula Radcliffe's world record
- 56:33at the time the 215 was it. It took them 16 years to to
- 56:37break that barrier and Chapman Getich's run was 10 seconds per
- 56:43mile quicker clips. It's just sickening.
- 56:50But like, obviously we're on the back foot because you're trying
- 56:53to catch them after the fact. And like, clearly there is a
- 56:58problem whereby the doctors who are helping them do one step
- 57:02ahead of like the the investigators in the AIU.
- 57:06But there must be the knowledge out there with clean, legitimate
- 57:09doctors who must know how they're possibly going to try
- 57:13and get around these these rules.
- 57:15So they should work with like good doctors to figure out what
- 57:19methodologies they'll be using and try and catch them in the
- 57:22act or prevent them from even doing it.
- 57:25I'd say it's hard to find a good doctor over there when they're
- 57:27offered like a couple of grand to literally just hide it.
- 57:30Like it's so rotten. Like you need to come down so
- 57:33hard on these guys now. Like at what stage does like a
- 57:37national band come in just bang Kenya?
- 57:39Like I know it would be crazy because Kipchoge is gone then
- 57:43like there's so many big names gone.
- 57:46Like, is it too hard? Is it too harsh on the people
- 57:48that aren't doping? But like, then again, you don't
- 57:51know, like, at what stage do we do?
- 57:53Do they put down the big band? Something's got to give.
- 57:56Be interesting to see what happens on the back of this now
- 57:58and you're wearing it and then all.
- 58:01I don't know if you've seen all the listeners clearly feel very
- 58:04similar, if not the same in the sponsors.
- 58:06Like everyone's just sick of having to entertain it.
- 58:10So I think that's a fair representation of fans of the
- 58:13sport in general. Like everyone's on the same
- 58:15wavelength. I suppose we'll park that item
- 58:19there until the the next case next week.
- 58:25So moving on to the Sydney Marathon field.
- 58:27So the men have announced the elite field now on the back of
- 58:31the women doing so a week or two ago.
- 58:34So we've got Kip Jogi of Kenya. Obviously this guy speaks for
- 58:40himself. And then there are 12345678
- 58:46other sub 205 guys. Like that is incredible depth at
- 58:51the top end. Like we talked about the London
- 58:53field earlier on and they're obviously household names as
- 58:56well. But like the times that these
- 58:58guys are running and the depth that Sydney have pulled in here
- 59:01is insane because then there's a further must be 12 who are sub
- 59:06two O 8 and I was wondering if they would get anyone over from
- 59:10Europe. So there is an Italian guy and a
- 59:13German guy in there as well as most of the others being Kenyans
- 59:17and Ethiopians and then into the Australian only field.
- 59:23Like, this is so exciting as well to see how how this will
- 59:25pan out because we've got Brett Robinson, Tom Dicanto, Dean, do
- 59:31you want me to leave your name out or say it?
- 59:35That's all good. Where was I?
- 59:43Tom Dicanto? Liam Adams, Reset Edwards, Nick
- 59:49L, Julian Spence, Dean Menzies, Kieran Perkins, Fraser Darcy,
- 59:53Matthew Cox And then there's a couple of exciting debutants as
- 59:57well. Have to string sauce, Sam
- 59:59Clifford and Joel Turban White. So that's going to be insane.
- 1:00:04I'm like something in the back of my mind really wants me to
- 1:00:07book some flights over to Sydney just to watch it.
- 1:00:09But I know it's an expensive expensive do not to run.
- 1:00:13Come here. When I seen Matthew Cox, I was
- 1:00:15like, oh, Genie Mackey's out. I.
- 1:00:20Was like how's your name? That's similar in Australia
- 1:00:22running a similar time. Same.
- 1:00:25It's funny. Imagine if that got this Matthew
- 1:00:27Cox. Guy has only recently ran his
- 1:00:30time there and Matthew Fox, when he gets out he sees there's
- 1:00:34literally a Matthew Cox who's one place above him on The
- 1:00:37Australian. It'd be like, excuse me, I think
- 1:00:44there's a typo. I think that's from a while ago,
- 1:00:47yeah. It's so interesting to see how
- 1:00:52have to Sam Clifford and Joe, well, mainly half two and uh,
- 1:00:56Clifford go in their debut. Like did it go out hard with the
- 1:01:00big boys or do they be it run it more conservatively?
- 1:01:03Because I think half 2 has dropped out of one a marathon
- 1:01:06already. He ran one in Europe, but.
- 1:01:08Hamburg he tried and yeah, DNA. Yeah, so it'll be interesting to
- 1:01:12see how them boys like for your first one to be Sydney, it's a.
- 1:01:17Tough introduction. Yeah.
- 1:01:19And I did it back in 2023 and it was particularly hot that day.
- 1:01:26But like that lead men's group were like messing about.
- 1:01:29Like I think they still went through halfway in 63 something
- 1:01:33on like a like it got close to 30° during the race, like like
- 1:01:40an Irish heat wave. It was and it and it's like I
- 1:01:47can't remember off the top. It's something like 325 meters
- 1:01:51of elevation, which like say New York is renowned by going
- 1:01:55through all the boroughs. I think it has like 240 meters
- 1:01:58of elevation. So like, like it's proper like
- 1:02:01hilly. Like I think like early in those
- 1:02:04sorts of marathon to maybe 80 meters, like do you remember
- 1:02:07ballot was Ballarat like 80 something meters I think
- 1:02:09perhaps. And so yeah, 320, it's like,
- 1:02:13it's not like it's hilly. So yeah, tough marathon.
- 1:02:16So there's 10, 10 Australians there in the in the Australian
- 1:02:19only field sub 2/19 with obviously then those 3
- 1:02:23debutantes to go in as well. So let's call it 13 and it pays
- 1:02:28down to is 1/5. Fifth.
- 1:02:29Yeah. But just shows that like usually
- 1:02:32maybe people will do like some mental maths and figure out if
- 1:02:35they're a chance for the payday or not, weren't they?
- 1:02:37And that might influence the decision.
- 1:02:39But because of the the amount of money that's on the line and it
- 1:02:42pays down to 5th and like the abilities as you get to like the
- 1:02:475th Australian down to like maybe the 13th Australian,
- 1:02:50everyone's kind of very similar. It's the chance of getting that
- 1:02:54decent money, isn't it? Yeah, and I think it's probably
- 1:02:56just the, it's the first world major in Australia ever with,
- 1:03:02you know, some of the biggest names in running ever.
- 1:03:05I think it's sort of like it's a pretty rare opportunity, I
- 1:03:08think. So I think it's getting a lot of
- 1:03:10people excited. Like you don't see, you know,
- 1:03:13when would you have the opportunity to to front up to a
- 1:03:15race like that? Never.
- 1:03:17Well, Speaking of which, are you able to speak on the like the
- 1:03:21package that comes with it in terms of like, are you in the
- 1:03:24the hotel and stuff like that with the elite field?
- 1:03:26No, So I don't know who, I don't know what the cut off is, but
- 1:03:29yeah, no, I like pretty limited assistance to be honest, so.
- 1:03:33I think Yogi's getting a a sweet, so it's all going to him.
- 1:03:40That's right. I think they, I think they might
- 1:03:42have spent a lot of their available budget on a few of the
- 1:03:46Stefan and Elliot there are so. Yeah, they've soldier dream in
- 1:03:50terms of rubbing shoulders with Kip Chogi, but you went to see
- 1:03:52him once all weekend. That's right.
- 1:03:55That's so good though. When is Sydney guys?
- 1:03:59End of August. How many weeks?
- 1:04:01Less than 6 is it? Six, yeah, I think six weeks.
- 1:04:05Wow, so are you deep in a marathon block now, Dean?
- 1:04:07I need to talk to RAF about it, to be honest.
- 1:04:09So say, say what? Say what we think.
- 1:04:12OK, OK. There's more of an idea than AI
- 1:04:16think. Yeah.
- 1:04:17To be truthful, my main goal is Valencia in December, so that's
- 1:04:23really the priority. And then, yeah, this is just an
- 1:04:27opportunity. So maybe something we
- 1:04:29considered. But yeah, to be honest, the main
- 1:04:31goals of Valencia. Nice there seems to be it.
- 1:04:34So many going over to Valencia as well.
- 1:04:36Lots of Melbourne based athletes going over so that'll be cool.
- 1:04:41So nice segue again into training weeks.
- 1:04:44Do you do you both want to tell us about your week?
- 1:04:46Do. You want to give an injury
- 1:04:47update, Ryan? Oh yeah, Scramble to get our
- 1:04:50training weeks up. Yeah, go on.
- 1:04:52Sorry, just dropped that on. So yeah, I went and seen the
- 1:04:56sports doc on Thursday. So this is a recommended sports
- 1:05:00doctor like specialises in sports injuries and he comes
- 1:05:03from a run in and try background himself.
- 1:05:06So I was somewhat relieved even just getting the appointment
- 1:05:10with him. He relooked at the MRI, which I
- 1:05:13had done back at the start of May.
- 1:05:15And seeing that there's actually a stress fracture in, I can't
- 1:05:18remember the bone, but it's basically the bone that goes
- 1:05:21down into your heel. Which hearing that actually
- 1:05:25makes me feel somewhat relieved because it kind of makes sense
- 1:05:27as to why it hasn't been healing.
- 1:05:29How I would, pardon the pun, I've expected it to be healing.
- 1:05:34So I mean, the good news is that now from that MRI, I'm nine
- 1:05:38weeks on anyway. So how it is right now shouldn't
- 1:05:41be how it looks on the image. And he started some treatment,
- 1:05:46which is cortisone type treatment, but it's not
- 1:05:50delivered via injection the way it typically is.
- 1:05:53So he said he's been doing it with athletes since the 80s this
- 1:05:57way, which is via electrical impulse.
- 1:06:01So he like straps this piece of material to maheal and lathers
- 1:06:06it in cortisone and it's attached to a battery, which
- 1:06:09like kind of charges that through the skin barrier.
- 1:06:12And it's seen as a lot safer than getting the injection
- 1:06:16straight into the area. Because when you, when I've
- 1:06:18spoken to people about getting a cortisone injection, everyone's
- 1:06:22kind of like wary, like, oh, well, when you return it will
- 1:06:25respond really well. And then there's the risk of
- 1:06:28rupturing it completely because it's kind of like such a short
- 1:06:32term fix. Where is this?
- 1:06:34Because it, it's delivered over like 5 rounds of treatments over
- 1:06:372 weeks. It's supposed to be more of a
- 1:06:39slow burn, but a lot more safe. So I mean, stresses are
- 1:06:43typically what, like 3 months to return from anyway?
- 1:06:46And then I've got to have this treatment for the actual planter
- 1:06:49for two weeks. So I don't know, feel a lot
- 1:06:51better about it. Hopefully another month or so.
- 1:06:54I can just be a bit more patient now and stop like trying to
- 1:06:57force the idea of like, oh, I should be back running because I
- 1:07:01shouldn't. So yeah, we'll, we'll just keep
- 1:07:04ticking over with that. And is there a date logged in
- 1:07:08for getting a scan to see how it's going or?
- 1:07:10Yeah. So that's what I thought.
- 1:07:12I thought, well, maybe we'll get another scan then to like
- 1:07:15physically see to actually see like what the healing process
- 1:07:18has been like. But he was like, it's probably
- 1:07:20not required, but maybe I'll, I'll push it again in another
- 1:07:25couple of weeks because I would like to see where it's actually
- 1:07:28up to because it's hard when you're looking at something that
- 1:07:30was 9 weeks ago and you're thinking, well, what's it look
- 1:07:33like now? But that might take the
- 1:07:35threshold of expenditure on this recovery journey over like
- 1:07:39$2000. So we'll have to see.
- 1:07:45It's not cheap. I think I single handedly kept
- 1:07:49the Australian healthcare system afloat when I was in Australia.
- 1:07:52Between freaking scans and physio appointments and
- 1:07:55massages. They should owe me money, but at
- 1:08:01least positive you've got you're on the track, you're getting the
- 1:08:04treatment, so hopefully you can see the light at the end of the
- 1:08:06tunnel pretty soon. That's it.
- 1:08:07I mean, I literally feel like we say this every episode, but what
- 1:08:12did they say last week? Dean, I was talking to you
- 1:08:14offline about the cross training and stuff and it's like I've hit
- 1:08:17rock bottom and I'm on the up. So it's week 1 of building back.
- 1:08:22Let's see. OK so start of my week I was
- 1:08:27deep deep deep in the oven. So umm, I took the morning over
- 1:08:32the weekend I'd like my first track speed session.
- 1:08:34Then I had the long run and my heart was strong and my heart
- 1:08:38rate was through the roof. So Monday morning I just took it
- 1:08:41off and then then in the evening I just done like 45 minutes easy
- 1:08:45and a few strides and I was sort of back to normal.
- 1:08:48That little break in the morning just sort of gave me that extra
- 1:08:51bit of time to recover. And yeah, I was sort of back on
- 1:08:54track. And Tuesday, 2 sessions for
- 1:08:58first one was it was 2 sets of four by AK and the first one was
- 1:09:05at like the lower end of threshold.
- 1:09:06So in and around like 3, I think average like 3-10 feeling,
- 1:09:11feeling good. And then for the last four, I
- 1:09:15done them at around like 255 per kilometer again feeling good,
- 1:09:21feeling in control, which is which is good.
- 1:09:23I had 6 minutes rest like in between the two sets as well.
- 1:09:26So I was like fully recovering, like ready to roll.
- 1:09:29And then in the evening I done 7 by 2 minutes and I done it
- 1:09:36around this grass track beside me.
- 1:09:39And guys, I was genuinely getting close to being blown
- 1:09:42away. It was so windy, like running in
- 1:09:45the back straight. It was literally like I dropped
- 1:09:48to like 340 per kilometer pace. But then you'd make it up on the
- 1:09:51other side because you'd have such a big boost because be at
- 1:09:54your back. But I sort of should have taken
- 1:09:57the wind into account because I'd say the effort was higher
- 1:10:01than it should have been. I should have just dropped it
- 1:10:03back a little bit. But yeah, still, like, I'm still
- 1:10:08feeling good. And then Wednesday.
- 1:10:11I have a, a bit like the the weather calculator.
- 1:10:16I have a wind calculate like calculation, but it's not, I
- 1:10:20thought I remember reading it's a book like the law of running
- 1:10:24and like this big book. And I thought basically the what
- 1:10:29I took away from the chapter on like wind impact of wind on
- 1:10:32running is essentially, let's say you're running into the
- 1:10:35wind. It costs you 10 seconds a
- 1:10:37kilometer running into it. You get half of that back.
- 1:10:41So let's say you're running. Let's say you're trying to run
- 1:10:44320 per K, but you can only run 340 per K into the wind.
- 1:10:50You'll then only run I think 310 per K running with the wind.
- 1:10:54So you'll only get about 10 seconds of that back.
- 1:10:56So the the overall cost over the 2 kilometers you lost 10
- 1:10:59seconds, if that makes sense. Yeah, I'm trying to find, I
- 1:11:02don't have Stratford Premium, so I can't normally it tells you
- 1:11:04the weather and all, but yeah, so I can't even see like how
- 1:11:08strong the wind was. And not good.
- 1:11:11No, I was. I was, it was a lot.
- 1:11:14Wednesday morning I got out for 75 minutes, so I done 75
- 1:11:22minutes, 16.4 kilometers and then that evening I got a
- 1:11:26massage, a well needed massage. The following morning I done 80
- 1:11:31minutes at 80 minutes around 4:30, which is around like 17.6
- 1:11:38kilometers. Again, feeling good.
- 1:11:40The heart rate's pretty good. Been pretty good lately.
- 1:11:42I feel like I've sort of like jumped up a level in fitness and
- 1:11:46Friday totally off, just chilling.
- 1:11:48How many steps? No steps.
- 1:11:50No. Steps, if you could see me right
- 1:11:52now, feed up. That's all I do on a Friday.
- 1:11:56So Saturday was yesterday. So it was like probably again my
- 1:12:02second like hard like speed session.
- 1:12:05So the session was 6 by 800 meters and the plan was let's
- 1:12:10say run the 1st 400 in like 7170 and then the 2nd 400 try and
- 1:12:16kick it down a little bit. So 6968 and then the first Rep I
- 1:12:21went through the 1st 400 and like 68 and I was like oh shit.
- 1:12:25So then I jammed on the brakes and around the 2nd 400 and like
- 1:12:2872. So it was like the opposite of
- 1:12:29what I was meant to do. But no, they were all so I think
- 1:12:35I started at like 220 for the 800 and I knocked it down like
- 1:12:38nearly a second each wrap. So I just find 800 so hard to
- 1:12:42run. I don't know why.
- 1:12:44Like I feel like I'm trying to kick it down.
- 1:12:46I only knock like a second off. It feels like I'm running like 5
- 1:12:49seconds faster, but I only knock a second off it.
- 1:12:51And then there was 2 minutes recovery between each Rep and
- 1:12:55then I 3 minutes recovery and I done 3 by 400.
- 1:12:59And these four hundreds were like hard.
- 1:13:01So I think I'd done like 6261 sixty for the off, 60 seconds
- 1:13:07for the four hundreds, which, yeah, I was happy with because I
- 1:13:10didn't think I could run like I thought my Max was like 6465 so.
- 1:13:15Off 60 seconds as well. Yeah, literally still panting
- 1:13:19going into the next Rep. And so yeah, I was happy with
- 1:13:23that. I feel like like after this
- 1:13:26track season and after cross country, I'll try and do like a
- 1:13:29speed block, like try and do a 1500 indoors, a 3K because I
- 1:13:33feel like it would really benefit over the 5K.
- 1:13:35Like being able to run comfortably at that pace.
- 1:13:39Your 5K pace would feel so easy then.
- 1:13:42And then so that was that, like 11.
- 1:13:44I finished that session in the morning and my sister was
- 1:13:47playing in a big game at like 5 and it took like an hour and a
- 1:13:51half to get to the game. So I had to like cram my double
- 1:13:54N, like I'm going to say like 2 hours after that session so that
- 1:13:57he's done 45 minutes around the football pitches here at home at
- 1:14:01like 5 minute kilometer pace, literally just shuffling about.
- 1:14:05And then there today, this morning was my long run, an hour
- 1:14:08and 50. The 1st 60 was pretty moderate.
- 1:14:12And then the last 50 minutes I sort of like picked it up a
- 1:14:16little bit. So I think I averaged like 338
- 1:14:19for the last 50, just sort of get a bit of like threshold in
- 1:14:23that last. So I think I'd done 27
- 1:14:26kilometers, averaging 4 O3, felt good, heart rate good.
- 1:14:30The whole total week was 122 kilometers and that's probably
- 1:14:34my biggest week now. I've got nationals in two weeks,
- 1:14:36so I'll probably have one more big session on Tuesday, but then
- 1:14:40I'll start sort of winding down, getting fresh.
- 1:14:43But it's all in in one pace, Touchwood.
- 1:14:45It's being yet strapped together.
- 1:14:47It's holding up just two more weeks.
- 1:14:50That's cool. With that long run, did you see
- 1:14:52what's the, I don't know what the direct quote is, but Canova
- 1:14:55has got a quote as any something along the lines of like medium
- 1:14:58speed is, um, is always good if you're feeling good or something
- 1:15:02like that. Just as if to say like basically
- 1:15:05equivalent of steady running. Isn't it like just it's not just
- 1:15:09because you're not doing like a Rep or threshold work.
- 1:15:11It's not aimless work. It's like really good.
- 1:15:14And I feel like it's good because I feel like if you're
- 1:15:15going for like a two hours or an hour and 50 minute, I feel like
- 1:15:18you just get a bit stale If you're just going the same pace
- 1:15:21or sort of like when you sort of upper up a bit for like in the
- 1:15:24middle of it or near the end just to get the legs rolling.
- 1:15:27It's sort of like, I don't know, feels good.
- 1:15:28But again, conscious that my heart rate isn't going too high,
- 1:15:31like keeping a little in it because last week I was it's
- 1:15:33cooked. So I think I'm I'm back out of
- 1:15:35the oven again, Thank God. Yeah.
- 1:15:37But again, it's still very humid here.
- 1:15:39So the heat wave still hasn't left, just no stun.
- 1:15:43We've no sun, but like it's a lot of cloud cover.
- 1:15:47So I'm not ideal running conditions, but I'm just putting
- 1:15:49up with it. It's a good segue for me.
- 1:15:56My training week, I believe it or not, started off with two on
- 1:16:01Monday with two easy commutes to and from the office.
- 1:16:04And then Tuesday ran to the office and then ran to the track
- 1:16:08and the session was, and you guys would remember this one,
- 1:16:12but it's 2K threshold lap jog and then it's 5 by it's sort of
- 1:16:19three sets of 2K. So the first one is 5 laps at
- 1:16:22threshold lap jog. Then it's 5 by 300 meters at
- 1:16:27VO2100 meter. Sort of float like you're not
- 1:16:30completely, you're not jogging you, you sort of continue in
- 1:16:34that pace and then back up to VO2 and then another lap jog.
- 1:16:38And then it's 200 slightly like quicker than the PO2, then your
- 1:16:42300 pace and then 200 meter flow times 5 as well to finish.
- 1:16:47And so Max and Luke were, were there, but I, I did my
- 1:16:53threshold. I, I said to the guy that the
- 1:16:57guys are like, what pace do you want to do the threshold at?
- 1:16:59And I said 74 seconds and they said, oh, can we go 70 twos?
- 1:17:02And I said, oh, not for me. And then they proceeded, I think
- 1:17:05they did 69 seconds for their first lap.
- 1:17:07And then I never saw them again. So I think they, I think it was
- 1:17:12like 550 or thereabouts. I think they did their threshold
- 1:17:16in and then. Do they understand the
- 1:17:19definition of the word threshold or what?
- 1:17:21What's the issue here? I said to them, I said, at least
- 1:17:24I know I'm not in 63 minute shape for half marathon.
- 1:17:28And it didn't, it didn't squash their enthusiasm, but it did
- 1:17:33change quickly because then we got to the 300 meters and they
- 1:17:37did their first Rep. They didn't wait for me.
- 1:17:38And then they did their first Rep.
- 1:17:40And then they all like started jogging and then they started
- 1:17:42looking at each other. And then I think by two laps I'd
- 1:17:46caught them. But then I think Luke was doing
- 1:17:48them like very fast and then sort of almost walking the
- 1:17:51hundreds and then Max was doing something in between.
- 1:17:53And anyway, I just did my as what we normally do them.
- 1:17:57So about 51 seconds for the so sort of 68 second pace, right,
- 1:18:01but for 300 meters and then 21 seconds for the 100m jog.
- 1:18:06And then the two hundreds were about 32 seconds, 33 seconds and
- 1:18:10then a similar sort of 42 second jog or float between them.
- 1:18:15So, yeah, so that was, I think pretty consistent with sort of
- 1:18:18how we've done that workout in the past in terms of pacing and
- 1:18:21stuff. And I don't mind it because it's
- 1:18:23more continuous and more a bit more aerobic.
- 1:18:25I don't mind the session so. Inside your head, whilst the
- 1:18:30initial threshold's going on, you're thinking, oh I can't wait
- 1:18:33to get these floats going. I was then they didn't wait.
- 1:18:37I was, I was fired up by that point.
- 1:18:39I was probably took a bit for me to cool down afterwards because
- 1:18:42what are you doing? Like it's so stupid running the
- 1:18:461st 2K in like 550. They flooded themselves with
- 1:18:49lactate. Yeah, hard way to run.
- 1:18:51That's not. Yeah, hard way to run.
- 1:18:54But I mean, if you survive, you'll probably get quite fit.
- 1:18:57But yeah, Wednesday, just a couple of easy jogs to and from
- 1:19:02the office. And then Thursday, double
- 1:19:06threshold. So in the morning, just three by
- 1:19:088 minutes with a one minute float, just similar to what all
- 1:19:12the other week, like the last X many weeks have been nothing too
- 1:19:16much to report to be honest. And then in the afternoon it was
- 1:19:21a can't remember. It's called like a stair fart
- 1:19:23lick or something. But essentially a minute at
- 1:19:26threshold a minute float and then you increase it by a
- 1:19:29minute. But you you do a minute float
- 1:19:31each time. But the threshold intervals are
- 1:19:33one minute, 2 minute, three minute, 4 minute, 5 minutes, 6
- 1:19:37minutes if if I wasn't racing on Sundays, but I stopped it after
- 1:19:405 minutes. So that was 20 minutes of, of
- 1:19:44running felt all right. I was, oh, I was with Luke for,
- 1:19:49for part of that. Didn't feel too bad.
- 1:19:53Friday ran into the office and then I ran to get a massage on
- 1:19:57the way home from work. So got a massage and then ran
- 1:20:01home, which was good. And then Saturday.
- 1:20:03The mileage on your car must be so low every every commute is
- 1:20:07via via fees. Yeah, sorry and I should cave
- 1:20:13here. I wasn't.
- 1:20:14I was like 2 KS I think to get to the massage while I was
- 1:20:17sweating by the time I got there.
- 1:20:19But yeah, I don't drive. I don't drive a lot to be
- 1:20:21honest. I don't know why we have that
- 1:20:22second car, could probably get rid of it have.
- 1:20:24You ever run? Either of you ever ran to a
- 1:20:27haircut? It's so awkward because like you
- 1:20:29think I'm just going to jog. So like you won't be sweaty, but
- 1:20:32then the 1st place that sweats is like the back of your head on
- 1:20:35your neck there. And then I'm sat in the Barber
- 1:20:38chair like still cooling down. I can just feel the sweat driven
- 1:20:42down your neck. It's not good.
- 1:20:44I've never done that before. Yeah, I actually got my hair cut
- 1:20:48on Friday too, but it was in the city.
- 1:20:51Did you from there? No, well, I just from the
- 1:20:54office. It's your lunch anyway.
- 1:21:03Yeah, so just you could be on your own on the on the haircut
- 1:21:11maybe, but I wouldn't I wouldn't do sporting in here.
- 1:21:15Yeah, maybe we need them to listeners right in if that's
- 1:21:18what you've done. But Owen sporting and nice in
- 1:21:21your haircut by the way as well, right?
- 1:21:23Yeah, people go fast. I needed to shave off a few
- 1:21:27seconds, so I talk. Get rid of the Big Mopper here.
- 1:21:30To paint a picture for the listeners, can you describe your
- 1:21:33order to the Barber? I literally said kit, I think, I
- 1:21:39think it's called a burst fade. So it's basically around my ears
- 1:21:43is like skinned. And then I sort of have like a
- 1:21:46wee, like a little bit of hair in the middle, yeah.
- 1:21:49Where's the hair in the middle at the back?
- 1:21:51Yeah, yeah, if you see the sides.
- 1:21:53Oh yeah. Oh God, it's like a mullet.
- 1:21:56You sort of, yeah, yeah, yeah. Got a few compliments on it.
- 1:21:59So it's either it must have been really, really bad before or my
- 1:22:03Barber done a really good job. So I don't know.
- 1:22:07There you go, just just before I forget that could be a funny A
- 1:22:11segment next week depending on if if people engage with it or
- 1:22:14not. What?
- 1:22:15What's the most random or funniest place you've ever ran
- 1:22:17to? Like as a commute.
- 1:22:21I'd have a few I reckon. The good old running home from a
- 1:22:25night out must be on a few people's list.
- 1:22:27You know when you've you couldn't get a taxi and you've
- 1:22:29got a bit too far to walk so you end up doing like 6 to 10K
- 1:22:35whilst extremely drunk? It's so hard.
- 1:22:38I was thinking about that because we got asked to listen a
- 1:22:40question on like run commuting. I think I've been doing it for
- 1:22:43like 15 years of different permutations of getting my stuff
- 1:22:47to and from an office. Like, I remember I used to drive
- 1:22:51halfway to like from home to a train station with a bag full of
- 1:22:56like, iron shirts, and you're just holding all that sort of
- 1:22:58stuff. And then you're on the way home,
- 1:23:00you're in your running gear just on the train because you can't
- 1:23:03run the whole way home. And then you're running only a
- 1:23:05bit of it. I don't know all sorts of silly
- 1:23:08things. Things we'll do for a bit of
- 1:23:10mileage, eh? I remember running home in
- 1:23:13casual clothes from a fantasy like football draft night just
- 1:23:17to get some extra mileage to try and beat someone in a weekly
- 1:23:20mileage challenge. I lost, but he was injured.
- 1:23:28He was injured like two or three weeks later, though, So I feel
- 1:23:30like lost the battle, won the war.
- 1:23:36Oh yeah. So yeah.
- 1:23:37So Saturday just did an easy 30 minutes and some strides, and
- 1:23:41then today was the Shelley 10K. So yeah.
- 1:23:45So it's sort of as it's essentially just, I don't know,
- 1:23:48to describe it. It's A, it's on footpath.
- 1:23:51It just goes out for about 3 1/2 kilometres.
- 1:23:54Does AU turn on the footpath? Runs parallel with the part of
- 1:23:59the Canning River? Yeah.
- 1:24:02It's sort of what, 10 KS from South of Perth, Pretty flat.
- 1:24:07You basically go pack back past your start finish line at around
- 1:24:107 KS for another K and a half, Chuck another U-turn and then
- 1:24:14head back towards the finish. It's A pretty low key fun run.
- 1:24:18Like it's not what one of purse major fun runs, but it's run by
- 1:24:21the WA Marathon Club, which is largely volunteer based and they
- 1:24:26do an exceptional job in terms of putting on events throughout
- 1:24:29the year, this being one of them.
- 1:24:31They sort of have an event at least probably every two to
- 1:24:34three weeks. And yeah, this was really well
- 1:24:37run. I think some of the worry coming
- 1:24:39into today because their forecast was thunderstorms was
- 1:24:42whether or not the bad weather was going to hit in the morning.
- 1:24:44But it was a little bit breezy. But otherwise it was really is a
- 1:24:49really nice morning. To be honest, I think the
- 1:24:52weather didn't come in till about ten, 11:00.
- 1:24:55So we're pretty lucky. What did you think, Ryan, when
- 1:24:58you were there? Yeah, I got there a little bit
- 1:25:00late, so I didn't actually see your start, so I've quickly
- 1:25:05doubt that. Yeah, the course went out, you
- 1:25:07came back through the start finish area and headed out
- 1:25:09again. So Raff was better keen for me
- 1:25:12to. He was like go with him when he
- 1:25:14comes through, he could do with some encouragement like it will
- 1:25:19help him. So I wasn't actually sure what I
- 1:25:21was going to do when I first set off following you.
- 1:25:24And then I was like, oh, well, this is quite, quite fun.
- 1:25:28I'll, I'll stay in behind them. No, no official pacemaking.
- 1:25:30I was on the road, actually about 20 meters away, always
- 1:25:35behind. Yeah, sure.
- 1:25:37He was. He was drafting off the lead
- 1:25:38bike anyway. There was already someone else
- 1:25:40pacing him. All I had I'd written down a
- 1:25:47race plan on my my hand and it just said 3056.
- 1:25:51That's. I wonder would the WA Marathon
- 1:25:57Club ever fly me out next year to try and try and retain my
- 1:26:02crowd? They, I don't know if they'd be,
- 1:26:04so I might not be the person to ask because I nearly missed
- 1:26:08presentations. And then we were the last car in
- 1:26:10the car park because the kids have been playing on the
- 1:26:12playground. The guy comes and taps on our
- 1:26:13window and he's like, I'm trying to like leave and close the
- 1:26:17gate. Can you please like remove your
- 1:26:19car? Sorry, so I don't think it's
- 1:26:22it's a big fan, but maybe Ryan can put in a good word on behalf
- 1:26:25of the pod. That's a savage look because
- 1:26:28that's not a fast course like all on footpath 2 pin turns, but
- 1:26:32that's your fit. Yeah, I don't know.
- 1:26:34I was a bit bummed. I sort of wanted to run a bit
- 1:26:36faster, but yeah, I don't. Know, I mean it was tough when
- 1:26:39you when you turned, there was quite a bit of headwinds that
- 1:26:41last. What is that stretch from when
- 1:26:43you turn 2K or something? Yeah, pretty much, yeah.
- 1:26:47The bikes are a bit ugly. How do I faster?
- 1:26:52But I guess coming back past you had them, you had all the, the
- 1:26:56people following and like they were like giving you a few
- 1:26:58shouts and stuff. So it probably like helped a
- 1:27:00little bit as well, didn't it? Yeah, it was your shouts on the
- 1:27:02bike mainly, but everyone was helping for sure.
- 1:27:06That I was running out of of ways to say let's go or come on.
- 1:27:10I was like, what can I go to next here?
- 1:27:12And then I was also. I bet you started hating them.
- 1:27:17I didn't have a clue because I didn't know the course.
- 1:27:20I knew you were like heading home, but I didn't know whether
- 1:27:23it was 3 KL or like one KL or whatever.
- 1:27:26So I didn't know at what point to deliver.
- 1:27:29Like, right, come on, Dean, let's go.
- 1:27:31Like dig in. I didn't want to do it too
- 1:27:33early, so I wasn't sure what was going on.
- 1:27:35But if anything, if you didn't like it, then it probably got
- 1:27:40you riled up and made your run quicker anyway.
- 1:27:42She's like Ryan, shut the fuck up.
- 1:27:46There were, yeah, there's always a few dark thoughts.
- 1:27:48I think I basically I went out in It's into the Wind on the way
- 1:27:52out and I had in mind of like maybe like three or three on my
- 1:27:56watch and it was more like three O 5.
- 1:27:59But then we did that U-turn and you start you.
- 1:28:02I could peg back a little bit of time, but my heart rate I more
- 1:28:05of my heart rate monitor and it was already it was over
- 1:28:08threshold. And so I was like, Oh, that's
- 1:28:09not ideal. Like I didn't.
- 1:28:10I thought maybe I'd have a few more beats to play with, but I
- 1:28:13was sort of hurting quite a bit. So I think I got my bit paced,
- 1:28:17average paced down to maybe three O 4 and then and then when
- 1:28:21you head back past the start finish line and I was starting
- 1:28:24to get a bit fatigued and I think I've got it down to 303
- 1:28:28pace or three. But I was like, God, if I don't
- 1:28:31keep this honest, I won't run under 3057 and that won't be
- 1:28:35make for good chat on the pod. So I sort of, I was, I was a bit
- 1:28:41conscious of it, but yeah, no, it's good bit different to last
- 1:28:44year. I was sort of, as I was running,
- 1:28:46I was imagining this virtual lead person that would have gone
- 1:28:50out and been a minute up the road on you.
- 1:28:54Luke Bates wasn't running, no. No, he's on the bike giving us a
- 1:28:57cheers. Very good of him.
- 1:28:59Three people on the bike. Wow.
- 1:29:04Keep joking at your anger. You had a better pacemaking set
- 1:29:08up than the Diamond League. Yours was all on that on the
- 1:29:12road too, right? That ran parallel with that
- 1:29:15footpath I assume. Was on the footpath.
- 1:29:17Oh. You're on the road, you can just
- 1:29:19hop. You just hop straight onto the
- 1:29:20road. It runs right alongside it.
- 1:29:22Wait, because the footpath weaves.
- 1:29:24Yeah, that's why you just stick on the road, it's heaps quicker.
- 1:29:26Oh, so you're on like 9.5 K? No, when we're down there, when
- 1:29:35we, we've done a few like marathon specific workouts along
- 1:29:39there and we'd normally start them on the footpath, but very
- 1:29:42soon end up on the road because it's so much faster on that road
- 1:29:45section. But I stayed on the footpath
- 1:29:47today. But yeah.
- 1:29:48What shoes? I wore the the Adidas ones.
- 1:29:52I probably spent $150.00 just on that race.
- 1:29:56And are they like, how'd they feel?
- 1:29:58Yeah, they, they still feel very nice.
- 1:30:00Yeah. Like they're, they just feel
- 1:30:03like a fairly responsive shoe that's super light.
- 1:30:07Like it's like the responsiveness of a super shoe
- 1:30:10just without like the weight of, you know, just some of those
- 1:30:13other shoes. But yeah, that's good.
- 1:30:16Nice any any ketones or beetroot or any of that random stuff.
- 1:30:21I did throw down a ketone just for old time's sake.
- 1:30:25In memory of you know who I mean.
- 1:30:28The fallen soldier. I did, yeah.
- 1:30:32But yeah, Keto, no beetroot juice and a decent amount of
- 1:30:36caffeine. Very good.
- 1:30:38Yeah, that was it. Extended cooldown or not?
- 1:30:40No, I just did like 20 minutes the the family was was down
- 1:30:44there. So yeah, just went over to the
- 1:30:47park, had a coffee. That was that.
- 1:30:49So yeah, a bit of a shorter week, I think 100 and 128 case,
- 1:30:53a bit of a smaller week, but yeah, might do the Perth half
- 1:30:56marathon in two weeks from now. So hopefully that's a good hit
- 1:30:59out before that. So we're starting finish for
- 1:31:01that. Marathon club rooms in Burswood,
- 1:31:04so just outside Burswood casino. So it's all along the river
- 1:31:08paths and stuff there. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:31:10I was looking at the results of that actually the other day over
- 1:31:13the past few years and like there's been some pretty quick
- 1:31:15times considering they're doing it's it's in inverts commas only
- 1:31:19marathon club events because historically they're not
- 1:31:22actually that deep. There's like fast people there
- 1:31:24and stuff, but not a lot of fast people.
- 1:31:26And yeah, like some 60 sixes and 60 fives and stuff.
- 1:31:29Yeah. Did you see the one in 2020?
- 1:31:32Maybe there might have been like, I think the first there
- 1:31:38was sort of, I think Ben Chamberlain won in like 65 high
- 1:31:42and then he beat Willie Chabol, who was one of the Ken Kenyan
- 1:31:45guy who was living in Perth for quite some time.
- 1:31:48He was like 208 guy back in his day.
- 1:31:51But he, yeah, they both ran 65 high.
- 1:31:53And then I think Matt Smith and I were like 66, so something.
- 1:31:57And then there's, yeah, a whole group of us under 70 minutes.
- 1:32:01Yeah, good. I did see that.
- 1:32:02That must be the one I'm thinking of.
- 1:32:03But yeah, quality race. Hopefully there's there's a few
- 1:32:07others there for you in a couple of weeks.
- 1:32:09Yeah, getting towards the end of the agenda now then.
- 1:32:12So YouTube Diaries, I said earlier we hadn't deliberated
- 1:32:16this offline. So I do have one.
- 1:32:19Would you like me to deliver it or does anyone have one they
- 1:32:22want to do? I feel like we can't, can we?
- 1:32:27We have to mention because I feel like part of YouTube
- 1:32:30Diaries is like unearthing, you know, YouTube channels.
- 1:32:33I feel like we have to, don't you think, mention Seth
- 1:32:35O'donald's YouTube channel? Yeah, he deserves 1.
- 1:32:39Like because what has it got? I'm just having a look now it
- 1:32:43has 311 subscribers and there's no way that will be the case for
- 1:32:48very long, right? So I don't how did you find it
- 1:32:51on did he post it on his socials it?
- 1:32:53Actually popped up on my feed. So yeah, which is pretty cool,
- 1:32:58but I do have a lot of like Australia, like is you pop up in
- 1:33:02my feed and all that. The algorithm is working, let's
- 1:33:05say. You know, when I tried to find
- 1:33:08them, I typed, typed in Seth O'Donnell and like, I had to
- 1:33:11really like dig to find this channel.
- 1:33:13Obviously it's it's a new one like, but yeah.
- 1:33:16But when did you want to just give like 2 minutes on what your
- 1:33:20reflections were on his video? So it's set.
- 1:33:22It's just under 8 minutes. So it's short and sweet and it's
- 1:33:26basically his travel day of flying to I think, Belgium.
- 1:33:30And I think he's going Is that his girlfriend that's with him
- 1:33:33or a friend, I don't know, and their cameraman and a guy.
- 1:33:37He's just such a good person. Like he's so funny just to carry
- 1:33:41on. He's so genuine, down to earth
- 1:33:43and. Do you think he realizes how
- 1:33:45funny he is? I don't, I don't think he does.
- 1:33:47I think that's just him. Like, yeah, he deserves that big
- 1:33:51night deal. Like, umm.
- 1:33:52And it's really weird, like he rocked up to a new country and
- 1:33:56the first thing he did was go to a gym to run, which is.
- 1:34:00Running in a gym, hey. Yeah, I suppose the treadmills,
- 1:34:03controlled environment and all that sort of stuff.
- 1:34:04But yeah, he's just got such a good like personality for
- 1:34:08YouTube. He comes across really well.
- 1:34:10He's funny, he's witty. Yeah.
- 1:34:12It's just, it's a great watch. It's so funny.
- 1:34:14I think the. Only issue is it was only 8
- 1:34:16minutes. I was like, you know?
- 1:34:19You want it longer? Needs to be longer, yeah, yeah.
- 1:34:21They've left. The people want more.
- 1:34:23There's two bits that I was I was crying off.
- 1:34:26The first one was when he got on that bike and his phone fell out
- 1:34:29of his pocket. Ask me on the fucking phone.
- 1:34:35They have to bake a lot of it out, don't they?
- 1:34:38Yeah. And then the second one, Oh my
- 1:34:40God. I think I was laughing out loud.
- 1:34:41I was like, what's going on here where he's speaking to like the
- 1:34:45immigration officer or someone in the train station and the,
- 1:34:48the Belgian guys like so who's better?
- 1:34:51Better people, Sydney or Melbourne?
- 1:34:52And he's like, oh, Sydney, a wankers mate.
- 1:34:59And he's, he's obviously putting this out to like assuming he's
- 1:35:02going to have an Australian audience and he just doesn't
- 1:35:04care. That's so funny.
- 1:35:06Yeah, that's very good. OK, yeah, give that a watch.
- 1:35:09We'll probably link them in the show notes because it is hard to
- 1:35:12find. And secondly, the one I was
- 1:35:15going to mention then, because I know listeners will like it, but
- 1:35:18like used to in particular will love this.
- 1:35:20So the Swedish guy, Andreas Omgren, who's just ran the
- 1:35:24European 5K record and we can get away with YouTube Diaries
- 1:35:30because it's on Coffee Club podcast, but they post it on
- 1:35:33YouTube as well so you can actually watch the video.
- 1:35:36So they've sat down and interviewed them and it's such a
- 1:35:39funny dynamic because obviously the boys are professional
- 1:35:42athletes themselves, Morgan McDonald, Ollie Ho and George
- 1:35:46Beamish. And you can just tell that
- 1:35:48they're like so giddy about getting to sit down and chat
- 1:35:52with this guy because they're like almost in awe of them.
- 1:35:54And they respect him so much. And it's so refreshing because
- 1:35:59he saw he talks in such depth and detail about his training
- 1:36:03methodologies and like exact sessions that he does, why he
- 1:36:07does them, at what time of the year he does them and how he
- 1:36:09structures his year. And he loves, he's a big lover
- 1:36:13of double threshold and he's done it since 2019.
- 1:36:15And he said, so he's able to look at it from a bit of a
- 1:36:18zoomed out perspective and say like when I first started my
- 1:36:23obviously he's looking at his threshold numbers, but he talks
- 1:36:26about how his pace has dropped at the same lactate level over
- 1:36:30this time. So it's interesting to know that
- 1:36:32like when you first start, you do have to be really careful
- 1:36:35with your paces. So he said even for him, he was
- 1:36:38doing 325 to 3:30-ish pace to produce a reading of around 3.
- 1:36:44And this is second. And to be fair, he said now he
- 1:36:46can run 250 per K pace and produce 3.
- 1:36:52And some of the sessions that he does are just insane.
- 1:36:55Like he was talking about preparing for that 5K record.
- 1:36:58He was doing 800 meter reps off short.
- 1:37:02He said short recovery. I think he might have said 30 to
- 1:37:0560 seconds in 2O2 and producing a low lactate reason after each
- 1:37:11of those reps. So he's just he's a machine and
- 1:37:15I want you to watch it or listen to it and let me know what you
- 1:37:17think. So I was just like in awe of
- 1:37:19like how passionate he is about the scientific side of the
- 1:37:22training and how knowledgeable he is as well.
- 1:37:25Like it's, it's quite inspiring. He talks about periodizing his
- 1:37:29training throughout the year. So like he'll always go to a big
- 1:37:32base phase. And he describes like building
- 1:37:35the base as like a level to allow you to introduce the race
- 1:37:38specific stuff and not like kind of blow up and be able to
- 1:37:42recover from it to do another specific one and another
- 1:37:44specific 1. And that's where you really dial
- 1:37:47in like your race fitness. So yeah, I won't say too much
- 1:37:51more, but jeez, I was impressed. That's cool.
- 1:37:54Lastly, then, double trouble. Anything spring to mind?
- 1:37:59Or shall I whip whip one else? I've got one if yeah, go.
- 1:38:04I just don't get, I don't see the point.
- 1:38:06So race bibs, yeah, like you wear them on your chest.
- 1:38:11I don't get why people wear them like on their leg.
- 1:38:14Have you seen people do this? Like when your knee when your
- 1:38:17knee rises it just can't be comfortable.
- 1:38:19Like I don't get why people don't wear them on their chest
- 1:38:21unless it makes their like jumper look not cool or
- 1:38:23something like that. But you just wear it to race bib
- 1:38:27on your chest and not on your leg Opinions.
- 1:38:29I have thought the same when I've seen it, but there must be
- 1:38:32something we're missing. Yeah, I don't get it.
- 1:38:35I know a couple of people that will do that, but they do that
- 1:38:37so that they don't have to wear a singlet in the rest.
- 1:38:40So they don't wait, they wear nothing.
- 1:38:41Yeah, your friends are them type of people.
- 1:38:48I think the maybe the triathlete to do it out a habit because
- 1:38:52they they often wear like a soothe where it zips down the
- 1:38:55middle. So maybe if you had the bib over
- 1:38:57your stomach area it would be in the way of the zip.
- 1:38:59I don't know. But then the Diamond League
- 1:39:01boys, they all wear them speed suits and they don't wear them
- 1:39:04on their leg. Yeah, because they're not
- 1:39:05running bloody wet suits. They've got the.
- 1:39:07Zip on the back? Yeah, I don't get it.
- 1:39:13And now this is going to follow up badly because my my 1 was
- 1:39:16also aimed at a triathlete. But it could be anyone.
- 1:39:20It was just that the example was a triathlete and maybe a bit of
- 1:39:25an A loser. And preface it by saying I'm,
- 1:39:27I'm not trying to slag triathletes off because I have a
- 1:39:30a growing respect for the sport after the getting involved with
- 1:39:33the Tour de France and all this sorts of stuff.
- 1:39:35It could be the training exactly in my training might have to go
- 1:39:39down that road. But yeah, I've seen a video of
- 1:39:42this guy. I meant to write his name down
- 1:39:44as well because I didn't want to just say it generically, but I
- 1:39:46guess it's best not to call someone out directly.
- 1:39:50We'll talk about the situation. So he, he's winning an Iron Man
- 1:39:55race and he comes around like the final turn and Iron Man's
- 1:39:59always finish on like the run on like a carpeted bit, don't they?
- 1:40:03Like, it's quite well set up and they've got barriers for like
- 1:40:06the last however many meters. And he looks over his shoulder,
- 1:40:11sees that no one's there, and he has 20 meters or so to the
- 1:40:15finish. And he just stops and like,
- 1:40:17walks a good 510 meters across the finish line.
- 1:40:21And I just thought like, there's no need for that.
- 1:40:23It's a little bit arrogance, isn't it?
- 1:40:24Like celebrate across the line what it looks better for you and
- 1:40:28like, you're not really taking the piss out your competition.
- 1:40:30But don't know if I was stood there watching, I'd be inclined
- 1:40:34to cheer the person who finishes first and like, finishes that
- 1:40:37hard or like does a cool celebration.
- 1:40:41But if you just stop and walk across the line, I just think
- 1:40:43you look like a bit of a tool. Apologies to anyone who walks
- 1:40:47across the finish line. Glad I didn't walk over the
- 1:40:49finish line today. Maybe I'm salty because I don't
- 1:40:53get to go across the finish line first.
- 1:40:55I don't think it even register in my head unless you're
- 1:40:58absolutely in a world world of pain that you actually cannot
- 1:41:02cross the finish line to slow down or mock because I'm always
- 1:41:05thinking like extra second. Accelerate.
- 1:41:07Yeah, exactly. Yeah.
- 1:41:10Yeah, I'll say you're allowed to crawl across the line, that's
- 1:41:12definitely fine. But just casually walking as I
- 1:41:15know. You've seen that Jimmy Gressier
- 1:41:18video where he goes to in a cross country, goes to slide on
- 1:41:21his knees across the line, Just eat shit, yeah?
- 1:41:26He's had a few mad ones, hasn't he?
- 1:41:27I think we've said about this maybe.
- 1:41:29The sandwich. Across the tape as well.
- 1:41:32Yeah, yeah, stapled it and then the sandwich.
- 1:41:34Didn't he try and take a sandwich from someone in the
- 1:41:36crowd? He's crazy.
- 1:41:38It might be him as well. So someone I'd like to swig a
- 1:41:41beer once. And also what's going on?
- 1:41:43Yeah. But yeah.
- 1:41:44And yeah, but there there's those and probably the large
- 1:41:47majority of people slaving away for an extra second on RPB.
- 1:41:51All right, then I think that brings the show home guys,
- 1:41:55unless you have anything you you'd like to say ahead of next
- 1:41:58week or things? I just have another little big
- 1:42:01week of training. Little big, yeah.
- 1:42:03So mediocre week of training to come up.
- 1:42:05And then, yeah, I'll be nationals, hopefully.
- 1:42:09I'm praying that I'm in the first race.
- 1:42:11Take the A race. When we find out.
- 1:42:14I really don't know, like I'd rather come last in the A race
- 1:42:17than win the B race to be honest.
- 1:42:20You just get dragged around to a much faster time.
- 1:42:22Just like marigami. Basic.
- 1:42:24Well, yeah, yeah, I want the opposite of that.
- 1:42:28Even though I was looking back at their results, I was 200 and
- 1:42:3060th. It's not freaking nuts.
- 1:42:34Yeah, yeah, it's crazy over there.
- 1:42:37But yeah, so just another just keep on letting these weeks add
- 1:42:40up. I'll probably take a little bit
- 1:42:41of downtime after this recuperate and then, yeah, start
- 1:42:45building again. See you guys.
- 1:42:48Yeah, just another week of training, I think so.
- 1:42:52But yeah, nothing particularly exciting.
- 1:42:54Hopefully I pull up. All right, And back at the track
- 1:42:56on Tuesday. Yeah, not much for me.
- 1:42:57Hopefully we can get another interview lined up again this
- 1:43:01week. I'll have to reach out to said
- 1:43:03participants who had provisionally said yes and
- 1:43:06hopefully they're still keen because that'll be a good one
- 1:43:09for the for the, for the listeners to listen to and also
- 1:43:13probably acknowledge the clubhouse that I've been
- 1:43:16mentioning and talking about on previous pods.
- 1:43:18We're still kind of working away on that.
- 1:43:20We think it's a really good idea to kind of get one big running
- 1:43:24group chat together of all the easy double listeners.
- 1:43:26So I was thinking like, to be fair, when that Chapman Gattach
- 1:43:30news came out and during the Diamond League, like imagine how
- 1:43:33sick it would have been if if we're up and running in the
- 1:43:35clubhouse and it would have been going off like everyone would
- 1:43:38have been saying all sorts. So yeah, we, we just want to, we
- 1:43:42want to take our time with it and, and land it well for, for
- 1:43:45the listeners because it's got really good potential.
- 1:43:48So thanks guys. We'll do it again, this time
- 1:43:51next week. Woo Ciao.
