Transcript
- 0:00What's up everybody, Charlie Marlow here want to talk about
- 0:03old dudes in sports today. And here's the reason.
- 0:07You probably saw yesterday the announcement that Clayton
- 0:10Kershaw will be retiring after this season.
- 0:13And it took me back because I remember when Clayton Kershaw
- 0:17made his Major League debut, it was against the Cardinals.
- 0:21It was May. I think it was late May, but it
- 0:24was May of 2008. I think he went six innings, 7
- 0:28strikeouts, pitch really well. Don't exactly quote me on that.
- 0:33You can look it up, but obviously Clayton Kershaw was
- 0:36super hyped up and was he 1920 years old?
- 0:40However old he was, I think he's 37 now.
- 0:44But I thought about it because I moved to Saint Louis in April of
- 0:492008. So it's interesting to me how
- 0:52sometimes athletes careers will make you think about where you
- 0:56were at a certain time with a job or moving somewhere.
- 1:01And so as I'm thinking about Clayton Kershaw, I also thought
- 1:04about TJ Oshi, another athlete who announced his retirement and
- 1:09has been doing the rounds, the media rounds over the summer
- 1:13talking about his awesome NHL career.
- 1:16And that's another dude who I really kind of think about
- 1:19because again, when I moved to Saint Louis April of 2008, all
- 1:24you heard about on sports talk radio was when is TJ Oshi going
- 1:28to make his debut for the Blues? And then he did later that next
- 1:33season. O8O9 had a great career,
- 1:37obviously was traded and wins a cup with the Washington Capitals
- 1:42and then TJ Oshi now retiring. It just kind of it.
- 1:46It just makes me think about how all these athletes who I covered
- 1:50or I watched when I was pretty young and I just moved to Saint
- 1:54Louis, this is 17 years ago, and how they're already freaking
- 1:59retiring. It kind of makes me feel old.
- 2:02I don't really feel old, but it's just like the end of these
- 2:06chapters that make you think about your life.
- 2:09Because TJ Oshi, for example, I think he's 37, don't quote me, I
- 2:15think he's about 37 or so, 38, whatever it is.
- 2:19But when I got to Saint Louis, I was 24 and I remember seeing TJ
- 2:24Oshi back in the day at the bars, having a good time and all
- 2:27that. And those guys like to have a
- 2:29good time. And now he's cup winner, great
- 2:32career, father, has all the kids and all that.
- 2:35So it's just funny how back in the day, you're at the same bars
- 2:40as these dudes. You covered these dudes and now
- 2:44they're retiring, which again, kind of makes me feel old.
- 2:48I'm 43, I don't feel that old. So then it gets me thinking
- 2:51again about, so who are the oldest athletes in United States
- 2:56professional sports? And I, I, I couldn't think of
- 2:59any off the top of my head. There's really no like Jamie
- 3:02Moyers anymore, although there's one that's close.
- 3:06And because I cover NASCAR now, I'm thinking, so Denny Hamlin, I
- 3:10think, I believe he's about 44 years old.
- 3:13I think he's one year older than me.
- 3:15And do I think NASCAR drivers are athletes?
- 3:18I do. But it's, let's be real, it's
- 3:20not the same level of athleticism if you're playing
- 3:23football, baseball, basketball, hockey, whatever it is.
- 3:28So again, I went to the old Google and the AI, the AI
- 3:32response comes back. I just said who are the oldest
- 3:36professional athletes? And I meant big time, not minor
- 3:39league. Who are the oldest professional
- 3:41athletes in US sports? And the two names that came up,
- 3:45both Hall of Farmers, Justin Verlander.
- 3:49Justin Verlander is 42. I believe he'll turn 43 in
- 3:54February. I looked up still pitching well.
- 3:57I remember picking him up for fantasy earlier this year.
- 4:00He doesn't have a good win loss record.
- 4:02I don't care about win losses. I think most of us don't at this
- 4:05point. But his ER, as like 3.75 has a
- 4:09pretty close to A1 strikeout per innings pitch.
- 4:12I think it was something like 142 innings, 127 strikeouts.
- 4:17I also I thought Justin Verlander was in the 300 win
- 4:20club. I don't know why I thought he
- 4:22had gotten there. I believe he has 265 wins, but
- 4:26Justin Verlander still getting it done at 42.
- 4:30I believe already he wants to pitch again next year also at
- 4:33the age of 43. Then the other guy, 41, Aaron
- 4:38Rodgers. Aaron Rodgers, I know he was
- 4:40hurt at first with The Jets, missed the whole year last year.
- 4:46Everybody's saying Aaron Rodgers, you know, wasn't,
- 4:48wasn't good. If you look at his numbers,
- 4:50though, they're actually pretty good.
- 4:52It's funny. And Aaron Rodgers has said this
- 4:54before, where he goes, my bad years are other players good
- 4:58years. So go and look that up.
- 5:00Last year, his numbers were not that bad.
- 5:02And now he's with the Steelers, but Verlander 42 and and Aaron
- 5:08Rodgers 41. And then it made me think again
- 5:12about my my dad back in the day. My dad's still with us.
- 5:14But I remember when my dad would say, and I'm guessing he was in
- 5:20his 40s, he would say how he always rooted for the old dudes,
- 5:25like the old guys in sports, whether it was basketball,
- 5:28somebody that was still hanging around when there were 40 or
- 5:31above or, or baseball. Going back, we're probably
- 5:34talking about Nolan Ryan. I think Nolan Ryan pitched till
- 5:37he was what, 46? But I remember my dad always
- 5:41saying how he rooted for the old guys, which at the time were
- 5:45probably dudes right around his age, a little older, a little
- 5:50younger. And it's funny because at the
- 5:53time, let's say I'm 1517, whatever it is, and I'm thinking
- 5:57of my dad kind of as older. He's in his 40s.
- 6:01But then here I am, 43. I don't feel really that old at
- 6:06all. Although if you told me when I
- 6:08was younger, hey, you're 43, it feels a lot older than when you
- 6:13get there. I know I'm kind of rambling
- 6:15here, but it's just funny because now I'm looking for
- 6:18athletes that are my age. And as a 43 year old, besides
- 6:23Denny Hamlin, unless I miss somebody, unless I miss
- 6:26somebody, there ain't nobody that's my age or older.
- 6:31Still playing big time professional sports in the
- 6:33United States. Verlander's one year younger and
- 6:39Aaron Rodgers is 2 years younger.
- 6:41So just made me think about all those things.
- 6:44Hope you enjoyed the video. If you liked it, give us a like
- 6:47on this new channel. Please subscribe new channel.
- 6:49We're trying to build it up. We're trying to do all sports.
- 6:52All the Cardinal stuff is on the STL Sports Central channel.
- 6:55All the NASCAR stuff is on the Kenny Wallace channel, right?
- 6:59So we're just going to do big picture sports, a lot of college
- 7:01football. And also please take care of my
- 7:04Saint Louis area sponsors, Triad Bank.
- 7:07The best thing I ever did for my rental property business, taking
- 7:10all my commercial loans from a big National Bank that did not
- 7:12care about me to a local bank, Triad Bank in Frontenac.
- 7:15My guy Matthew Tobin. Been working with them for, I
- 7:18don't know, 5-6 years. I got 3 loans with them.
- 7:21We got a line of credit off the house, which I used to start the
- 7:24rental property business and they're just good people and
- 7:28it's relationship based banking. I'm telling you, you won't
- 7:30realize how bad your customer service was with your previous
- 7:34bank until you switched to Triad bank.
- 7:36Then also Saint Louis lawn care, Saint Louis equipment.
- 7:38Saint Louis lawn care did aeration and over seeding this
- 7:42week. They've done all kinds of they
- 7:44do mulch every year. They'll do landscaping, right.
- 7:48They've done some Arbor Vita, they've done some juniper, some
- 7:51boxwoods in the front. And I know back there I have AI
- 7:53have a tree that's kind of dying.
- 7:55That's not that's not Saint Louis lawn care's fault.
- 7:58OK, that's my fault. That's my fault.
- 8:00But also Saint Louis equipment. Buy a mower.
- 8:03You can get your mower repaired. They have a brand new location
- 8:06in DeSoto. Check them out.
- 8:09The brands they got what steel they got Husqvarna.
- 8:12We're talking blowers, trimmers and all that.
- 8:14I bought a Husqvarna blower back in the day.
- 8:16I bought a Crest battery operated trimmer, although they
- 8:18don't carry Crest products anymore.
- 8:21But all your kind of leaf blowing needs in the fall and
- 8:26then I'm telling you early, but for the winter salt, you can get
- 8:29all your snow plow stuff, buy bulk salt they can deliver and
- 8:33all that. They do it all.
- 8:34Saint Louis lawn care, Saint Louis equipment, my guy, Tim
- 8:36Jenkerson, and of course Triad Bank.
- 8:38So there you go, wrapping it up, not too long of a video just
- 8:43talking about the old dudes, the old dudes retiring, which makes
- 8:46me feel old. Playton, Kershaw, TJ Oshi, and
- 8:51then shout out to Justin Verlander, still getting it
- 8:55done. Shout out to Aaron Rodgers.
- 8:57I don't care if you don't like him.
- 8:59I don't care if you don't like his politics.
- 9:01If you're if you're my age, you still got to give the dude
- 9:04credit. 41 and still out there playing in the National Football
- 9:08League. There you go.
- 9:10Peace out.
