Transcript
- 0:19I'm Jessica and this is T about K Rambles.
- 0:21We're a couple of friends review Korean dramas and we're back for
- 0:24another season 6 episode. We're going to cover when the
- 0:28phone rings and I got with me my friend Carol from the K Drama
- 0:34Musings podcast. Carol, what is up?
- 0:37How are you? New year, what's going on?
- 0:41Hi. Hi, everyone.
- 0:43This is my first podcast recording of the year.
- 0:47I'm very excited to be here. I'm doing OK.
- 0:52I'm just getting off of a cold, so forgive my voice, but I'm
- 0:57doing OK. I'm ready to talk about when the
- 0:59phone rings. Listen, the show had me in a
- 1:04chokehold until it didn't. And I'm trying to.
- 1:08I was telling Jess, I'm trying to figure out, am I going to
- 1:12like go hard and be in defense of the show or am I?
- 1:18We'll see. We'll see, We'll see.
- 1:20We'll stay tuned. So this episode came about
- 1:24because we were set to record an episode on Love Next Door, and
- 1:29what ended up happening was I dropped that show and Carol, you
- 1:34managed to finish it. And so we ended up getting
- 1:36together for a debrief. Episode.
- 1:40On just the Patreon feed and we had a lot of fun.
- 1:43We talked a lot of shit and I I was like, well, we had to like
- 1:46do something else because I really do love recording with
- 1:49you. I I want to get something up on
- 1:50the on the real feed for Tibock. And when the phone rings was
- 1:55taken the Airways by storm. Everyone was watching when the
- 1:57phone rings. You were really excited about it
- 1:59and posting about it on social media.
- 2:02And I was like, Carol, if I start when the phone rings, like
- 2:05do you want to make that our replacement Love Next Door
- 2:07episode on the Tibock feed? And you said, yeah, absolutely
- 2:10for sure. Yeah.
- 2:11I almost didn't even finish when the phone rings.
- 2:15You were at. One point, like you got real
- 2:18quiet about when the phone rings on your social and I was like,
- 2:21this isn't looking good. And I messaged you and I was
- 2:24like, Carol, are you still on for that?
- 2:26Like, 'cause I can push through and like finish this show if you
- 2:29want to do the episode. And you were like, we don't have
- 2:32to like you were even like, we don't have to do anything.
- 2:38And I was. Like.
- 2:40Are you sure? Long story short.
- 2:42We're here, we're going to do it.
- 2:44We have gathered some thoughts together about this show, about
- 2:48this experience, and we're ready to like do a mini deep dive.

- 4:19this, Carol. OK.
- 4:21OK. I have a disclaimer.
- 4:23Yes, please. Please, any trigger warnings,
- 4:25disclaimers, anything you wanna put at the front of this.
- 4:28Two things #1 if you do follow me on social media, by now
- 4:33you've seen the trend of me going so silent.
- 4:36It just it just, you know, it could either mean I hate it, I'm
- 4:43embarrassed, I don't want to talk about it anymore, or it
- 4:47could be like just a personal experience for me, OK.
- 4:51Yeah. #2 this was a fever dream and I stand on back when the
- 4:59phone rings was a fever dream that I am here to defend.
- 5:03So let's get into it all right. So the My Drama List synopsis
- 5:08reads picks on. The youngest presidential
- 5:11spokesman in Korea comes from a prestigious political family.
- 5:15His background includes roles as a war correspondent, OK hostage
- 5:21negotiator and news anchor. Three years ago, he married Hong
- 5:25Hiju, a mute sign language interpreter and the adopted
- 5:28second daughter of a newspaper proprietor.
- 5:31Maybe you could say media mogul. I feel like that's a better way
- 5:34to say what her family is and does.
- 5:36Their marriage, based on convenience has been distant and
- 5:39cold. However, when Hiju is kidnapped,
- 5:42their lives and relationship are changed.
- 5:46This show is adapted from the web novel The Number You Have
- 5:50Dialed by Con O Munyo. I hope I said that right.
- 5:54It has taken us by storm in just a few months, November 2024
- 5:59through January 2025, it was airing.
- 6:02And I think it was delayed a few times because of, I don't know,
- 6:07the impeachment of the South Korean president.
- 6:11And some other factors have pushed some episodes into 2025.
- 6:16Because it's only 12 episodes long, there really should be no
- 6:21reason why I was airing for three months.
- 6:22But here we are. It's directed by Pak Sangu.
- 6:26He's also directed The Forbidden Marriage, Never Twice and My
- 6:31Secret Terrius, which I really do want to watch My Secret
- 6:34Terrius. I've heard really good things
- 6:35about that one, and I personally liked The Forbidden Marriage.
- 6:39Have you seen this director's work before?
- 6:41Yes, I've I've seen all of it and hit or miss, but generally I
- 6:48like it. All right, this show is written
- 6:51by or adapted you could say by Kim Jong Un.
- 6:54She has written Melancholia, Doctor John, Hi, Juggle me and
- 7:00Tong Dong Dong Alice. When I saw she had written Tong
- 7:03Dong Dong Alice I was like what a throwback.
- 7:08That is a 20/12/2013 show that I remember vividly dropping.
- 7:14Did you watch these shows? I did.
- 7:18I did. I OK.
- 7:20Chung Dung Dong Alice with Mungo in, I believe her name was.
- 7:28Yeah, I watched it. I didn't drop it back then.
- 7:31I didn't know how to drop a drama.
- 7:33It just wasn't. Yeah, but hi, Jekyll and and me,
- 7:38I watched it and I think I liked it at the time, but I tried to
- 7:43watch it again recently and I was like, Oh no, no, OK, but I
- 7:50haven't watched. I didn't watch Melancholia.
- 7:53It's not my genre. This show stars you young suck
- 7:58as Pixon. He's our male lead.
- 8:01He is 40 years old. I just wanna say that 'cause I
- 8:05feel like there's a movement online that's like, you can't
- 8:09have age gaps, You can have people that are different ages.
- 8:12And I'm the first one to cry about an inappropriate age gap.
- 8:17He's 40 years old. No one said a word.
- 8:19No one said shit about him being 40.
- 8:22Chase Subin is the female lead playing Hong Yi Jo.
- 8:25She's 30. That's a 10 year double digit
- 8:28age gap here. OK, 10 years.
- 8:31Ten years. No one said anything about it
- 8:33but like The thing is, it's the same people that are salivating
- 8:38over this show with a 10 year age gap between the leads.
- 8:42Yeah. That bitch about the four years
- 8:45in 2521? Between those. 2 characters.
- 8:49Well, if you think about 30 and 40, that's different from 20
- 8:56something and whatever they were and.
- 9:00People were like, she's in high school.
- 9:02He's a grown man. I'm like, it's four years, OK.
- 9:06I don't want to get into 2521 'cause I feel like I did.
- 9:08We did cover that aspect in the review for it, but oh, I wanted
- 9:14to say we did cover Mr. Sunshine from 2018, which is a Yu Yun Suk
- 9:19drama that is the best he's ever looked.
- 9:22I I was going to say I agree but.
- 9:27Where are you? Where are you drawing the line
- 9:29here? I personally like him.
- 9:33I like Yu Yun Suk in terms of the best.
- 9:37You know that. I call it the mane of glory, the
- 9:40little mustache that was sexy, that was sexy, that was really,
- 9:46really hot. But in this drama, I don't know
- 9:49whether it was just him wearing black.
- 9:53Maybe it was the whole like, I don't know.
- 9:56I don't know. It worked.
- 9:57It worked for me. Yeah, it worked for me.
- 9:59OK, that was a discussion that I was having in the DMS too,
- 10:03because I was like, I don't really get.
- 10:05I mean, he's a wonderful actor. I've seen him in Mr. Sunshine
- 10:09Hospital Playlist, a werewolf boy movie from 2012 where he's
- 10:15just awful, awful feeling character, the Royal Taylor, the
- 10:18beauty inside, more, more of his movie stuff.
- 10:22I vividly remember watching Reply in 1994 and thinking this
- 10:25guy's ugly, so we're here. We're here all these years
- 10:30later, over 10 years later, and I'm now realizing that people
- 10:35really think he's attractive. You know.
- 10:39And that's why I was like, oh, that's a sword for me.
- 10:43But I, I. Swear for me but that's OK, I'm
- 10:46not going to yuck your Yum. But it's surprising especially
- 10:49now because he's ever since hospital playlist I feel people
- 10:54have been talking about him. He's he's around circulating on
- 10:58the socials and that's fine. Great love to see it for him.
- 11:01Love that for him. But personally, he is baseline,
- 11:07not my cup of tea, OK? For me personally, please don't
- 11:10come for me and be like, oh, how can you think that way?
- 11:13It's me. In my opinion, OK doesn't do it
- 11:16for me, except for Mr. Sunshine. Oh my God, I was losing my shit
- 11:21at Mr. Sunshine. He was fantastic.
- 11:23Fantastic. He was, he was amazing.
- 11:26Performance wise, looks wise. Just the the outfits he was
- 11:31wearing and I think he is. I think a little bit more flesh
- 11:38works for me. I feel that I'll just leave it
- 11:41at. That I feel that, so I want to
- 11:43put that at the top. Chesubin, What's your experience
- 11:46with Chesubin, the female lead? Oh, I was.
- 11:49I was going to come on really strong and I had.
- 11:52To I thought you like check yourself.
- 11:54What happened there? I remember it.
- 11:56I got to be politically correct. She's not my favorite.
- 12:00I do not like to watch her. In fact, I had no plans to watch
- 12:05this drama, so I didn't know anything about the drama.
- 12:07And when I hit episode one play, I was really watching for him
- 12:12and I was like, you know what? Her expression is the same from
- 12:18episode 1 to 12, but it works for her character, so let's move
- 12:23on, OK? Let's just move on.
- 12:26I really loved I'm Not a Robot, and that's the thing that I
- 12:30remember her most from. Me too with the.
- 12:35Yes, yes, yes, yes. Yui Sung Ho.
- 12:38Uh huh. Yes.
- 12:39Yes, that was good. That was good.
- 12:42So what did you think about when the phone rings, Carol?
- 12:47OK, with the mind that it was a fever dream, right?
- 12:52OK, I thought it was really entertaining.
- 12:55I will Episode 1 to like four. I was just like, OK, it took me
- 13:03a while, but the endings always had me hooked to see what would
- 13:09happen next. So I was like, OK, OK, I'll keep
- 13:12watching. And then you rolled up.
- 13:15It's just. The look on your face, the
- 13:18furrow of the brows, You're just looking and you're looking
- 13:21around the room like where's the where's the camera?
- 13:25And I was watching this and I was just like, I'm not even
- 13:28using my brain. There is like so much drama in
- 13:33my real life. This, this makes my drama look
- 13:37like peanuts. So I'm enjoying it, right?
- 13:41And then we get to like 5 and 6 and I'm like.
- 13:48When the Nigerian comes out, I just, I love it.
- 13:52Didn't this guy say he's really smart?
- 13:55And what's going on? I don't know.
- 14:00No. OK, Carol, just keep, just keep
- 14:02trucking along. By like bring it in.
- 14:05Really. Episode 6.
- 14:07Wait wait wait wait. No spoilers.
- 14:09Not spoilers, but you could say episode 6.
- 14:12OK, episode 6 just the we woke up in episode 7 and it was just
- 14:19like, Oh yeah, episode 6 happened.
- 14:23I was just like, oh, you guys are taking me for fools.
- 14:26Oh, oh, so I'm, I'm really sitting here.
- 14:31You didn't even give me memory loss.
- 14:35I would have preferred memory loss.
- 14:38I would have loved a little bit of amnesia.
- 14:42It would have felt like home, but you robbed me of a memory
- 14:47loss. We're going to have to start
- 14:50there in the spoiler section, but I'll jump in here and say I
- 14:55started watching the show again. Didn't know any, never read the
- 14:58webtoon, never read anything or knew anything about the drama.
- 15:02I just knew it was popular and people were really enjoying it.
- 15:05And you young suck as a panty dropper.
- 15:07Oh news to me. OK, so I showed up episode 1 and
- 15:12again, I bring it up because in episode 1 he comes in with a
- 15:17flourish and he's the talk of this party.
- 15:21But this isn't a spoiler, but people are going Oh my God, he's
- 15:24so handsome. And you can hear it in the bad
- 15:27English that they have circulating in this scene and in
- 15:31the subtitles. They're also calling attention
- 15:34to the fact that he's so good looking.
- 15:36And I'm like, unfortunately that's not working on me.
- 15:42Like to to gaslight me into thinking that he's good looking
- 15:45but OK. The suits didn't work for you.
- 15:48No. He looks great.
- 15:49He looks sharp, he looks fresh when I stop him on the street
- 15:52and be like, can I have your number?
- 15:53No. OK, OK.
- 15:55No, but the again personal thing.
- 15:57So I was already kind of like thrown with the some of that
- 16:02gaslighting too. It's the same thing that if an
- 16:05obviously good looking person is playing what's supposed to be an
- 16:09ugly character and everyone in the show is saying, God, they're
- 16:12so ugly, I'm like, what the fuck are you talking about?
- 16:14That's how I felt. Yeah, true.
- 16:17Oh, true beauty. Anyway, another episode you can
- 16:20scroll back to and listen to because that was another crazy
- 16:23one. But I'm already on my guard, on
- 16:27guard here, like looking around. Where's the next thing that
- 16:30they're going to try and make me believe?
- 16:32And The thing is, I didn't have to wait too long.
- 16:33This plot is preposterous. It's ludicrous.
- 16:37This isn't a a spoiler, but like, she has selective mutism.
- 16:41That's the story in episode 1. And I'm like, all right, all
- 16:45right, it's a thing. It's real.
- 16:47But already I'm like, this is going down a path that I don't
- 16:52think I want to follow. But after episode 1, I was like,
- 16:54you know what? Let me just shut my brain off.
- 16:57Thank you. You critical thinking babes.
- 17:00Yeah. I'm like, you know what?
- 17:02Let me just shut it down. I'll watch this.
- 17:04And I was coasting through each episode.
- 17:06I did not think it was particularly amazing.
- 17:10I did not think it was binge worthy.
- 17:13I did not think that this was the best show in the planet.
- 17:16I did not think their chemistry. I've never seen this kind of
- 17:19chemistry before in my life. No, no, no.
- 17:21I was just. That's true.
- 17:22Chill. I was chill watching the show,
- 17:26happy as a clam. Like it was a nothing show,
- 17:28whatever. Then episode 6 happens and I was
- 17:32like, if you guys aren't going to fucking take this seriously,
- 17:35Like I almost, I almost shut off the whole show.
- 17:38I was like, you know what I remember?
- 17:42You DM me and she's like Carol, explain yourself.
- 17:45I'm like, what are you having? To explain.
- 17:48Because we had already agreed that we were going to do this
- 17:50episode review. And I was like, Carol, you need
- 17:54to talk me through this because I'm struggling here.
- 17:58I can't believe they did this thing.
- 18:00It really didn't improve after that for me.
- 18:04Then I stopped watching at episode 10 and I was like, OK,
- 18:08I'll watch other things like Squid Game.
- 18:10I'll watch finish watching No game no love.
- 18:12I'll watch spice up our love. I'll I'll watch anything but
- 18:15this until this thing finishes and I got some time on my hands
- 18:20to finish out the show. Girl, when I saw the visceral
- 18:25reaction to the final two episodes, I busted a gut from
- 18:32laughing. I was so entertained by the
- 18:37uproar, the backlash, so to speak, to the final two
- 18:42episodes. And I was like, oh, now
- 18:44everybody thinks it's a bad show.
- 18:48And The thing is. I don't know if people have
- 18:52necessarily watched Makjiang before.
- 18:55You know, that's a fair comment, This.
- 18:57Show was a crash course in Makjiang.
- 18:59Yeah, yeah, I agree. I agree.
- 19:02By like episode 11, people had taken enough ibuprofen and they
- 19:08were just like, hang on, now I'm I'm getting some clarity.
- 19:14I'm. I'm gaining enlightenment here.
- 19:17It's. Like what is going on?
- 19:20A lot of questions, very few answers, plot holes that were
- 19:25really plot chasms and a lot of people didn't seem to care about
- 19:30it until the final episode. I was genuinely shocked and
- 19:35enthused by the reaction. I will.
- 19:38I will say I was one of those people who by the ending I was
- 19:45absolutely pissed off. Not because I was just like,
- 19:50where's the growth of this character?
- 19:53Talk about it. Where is the sense with this
- 19:57character? You're supposedly a really smart
- 20:02go to person and then you pull a oh, I'm leaving to punish
- 20:07myself? What?
- 20:10I thought you said you wanted this person in your life and you
- 20:14want to spend time with them and then you just ghost them because
- 20:17you feel so bad and you knew your wife knows and she still
- 20:23chose you and you still dipped and then you're now dashing
- 20:28people money in this economy left and right and you expect me
- 20:33to be OK with like I I just, I didn't understand why he ghosted
- 20:39her. I I can sort of I didn't like
- 20:42the whole job. Let's.
- 20:44Keep Let's keep non spoiler section so we'll talk about the
- 20:47ending in depth and the spoilers like.
- 20:48My bad, my bad. I just got heated.
- 20:51No, it's OK. It's OK.
- 20:52We'll get real heated, I'm sure, in the spoiler section.
- 20:55But I I agree with you in that there were plot holes.
- 21:00I remember sitting in my couch and I was talking to myself and
- 21:05I was talking to like, I had two personalities.
- 21:08I was like, you know, I can excuse plot holes, but I draw
- 21:13the line at incompetence police. And my other person is like, you
- 21:18can excuse plot holes. Yeah.
- 21:20What the heck? The cop incompetence police just
- 21:24pissed me off and I and that's when I was finally like I'm not
- 21:29really liking this show. I don't like incompetence
- 21:32police, but somehow plot holes are fine so we move.
- 21:38I have said this before and I will keep saying it.
- 21:41I am a plot person. If the plot don't make no sense,
- 21:45I just don't coast by on vibes and aura like that doesn't work
- 21:50for me. Yeah, I get you.
- 21:52And The thing is, I can get interesting vibes, sexy vibes,
- 21:56whatever from a TikTok edit from a photo shoot that this couple
- 22:01does, and I can get that high from that.
- 22:04But if I'm sitting there to watch an hour long show and it
- 22:10don't make no sense, you're telling me a story like you're
- 22:14storytelling. That's that's what I'm here for.
- 22:16And the story is not making no sense.
- 22:20That's when I'm like, you know what?
- 22:21No, and I've said this before too, I'm not a mock Jung person.
- 22:25I got scared by the last Empress.
- 22:27I got real scared. And.
- 22:29This show gave Last Empress vibes.
- 22:32It's real mock Jung and I. I don't think people were
- 22:35prepared for it. I don't know if it was
- 22:37necessarily marketed as such. I don't know.
- 22:39I don't know what went wrong. But you know, from episode 1,
- 22:44you could tell this was stupid. Like it was going to be
- 22:48unbelievable. And yeah, you have to suspend
- 22:51your disbelief, but up to what point?
- 22:54Up to episode 6. Up to episode 6.
- 22:57For me, it was Episode 6. I wasn't going, this is a
- 23:00masterpiece. This is my favorite couple ever
- 23:03and and that's what I was seeing like everywhere.
- 23:06I don't. I will never say they were my
- 23:09favorite couple, but I will say that personally for me, when we
- 23:16are talking about top dramas of 2024 in my list, it's up there
- 23:22because it gave me something. Yeah, I think it gave you more
- 23:28than it gave anything to me. Exactly.
- 23:32Which is why I was excited to cover 'cause I was like, OK,
- 23:34Carol loves it. Fantastic.
- 23:35And. Then I went silent.
- 23:39I just feel like last year did not give and to have that at the
- 23:44end of the year, and I love a mahjong, I'm always seated for a
- 23:48mahjong, but to have that at the end of the year felt very, it
- 23:53had me like dissing people out loud in my own space.
- 24:00It gave me a reaction, which is what I wanted versus the trunk,
- 24:06which I didn't really react to it like on social media
- 24:11especially, but that has been on.
- 24:14I've seen it 6 Times Now, but that has like constantly been on
- 24:19my mind where I'm thinking. So that was my plot, if you
- 24:23will. I know that's controversial.
- 24:25That is controversial, okay. But when the phone rings gave me
- 24:32like crash out. It was.
- 24:34That's what it is. It allowed me to crash out and
- 24:38be like yes this is what I needed so.
- 24:40There's a lot going on in this show and actually like, not that
- 24:44much going on too. But what was your favorite
- 24:49character like? Let's get some positives in
- 24:51here. My favorite character, you know,
- 24:57maybe he was so annoying, but he was entertaining the guy in his
- 25:04office who was like taking the couple pictures and giving him
- 25:08advice for his wife. Right.
- 25:10So that's Lim Chul SU is that actor, and he's been in so many
- 25:14things, right? Yes.
- 25:16Vincenzo. I remember him in that.
- 25:18Yeah. I feel like he might have been
- 25:20in Queen of Tears. As well, I think because of
- 25:24Vincenzo and his character and that I really.
- 25:27He got talk about it. He did, but, but I really
- 25:30thought he would turn out to be a bad guy in this one.
- 25:35Like that's where my mind was. So when by the end, when I was
- 25:39like, oh, he's just, he's just just, I was like, well, that's
- 25:43wasted potential. Right, like we're expecting a
- 25:47subversion. Yeah, yeah.
- 25:50Give me something. But yeah, I think I liked him
- 25:54and I liked the male lead because, well.
- 25:59Because, because Because. Like because he gives good
- 26:03kissing scenes I will. Not take that from him.
- 26:06No one's going to take that away from.
- 26:08I will not take that away from him.
- 26:09He's a wonderful kisser. What was he doing?
- 26:13He was like doing them open mouth kisses in this show and
- 26:16just like eating her up. And yeah, that was great.
- 26:20Love it. Not going to complain about
- 26:21that. And she's got a good kiss as
- 26:24well in I'm Not a Robot. That's a damn big kiss that she
- 26:29has in that show, too. So it's not like she's far
- 26:31behind you young suck. But yeah, I would say my
- 26:37favorite character has to deal. Well, it's two.
- 26:40It's the second male lead and the second female lead who ends
- 26:44up being the second couple in the show because I was like,
- 26:47let's stick with them. I think there's something there.
- 26:50And I was expecting more exploration of their romance and
- 26:56just flushing that out more. And we're on like the 10th
- 27:00kidnapping, and these two are like, nowhere to be seen.
- 27:03And I'm like, but they're so compelling.
- 27:06And I don't know, there was something, yeah, interesting
- 27:08about them. They don't get the time of day
- 27:11in this show. That's true.
- 27:13The second male lead, there was one moment where I felt like,
- 27:18oh, is this my bad guy? Like this is what I mean by when
- 27:22I was watching this show I wasn't watching with any kind of
- 27:26sense because I wasn't like forward thinking.
- 27:31I was going at the pace the show is telling me to go and trying
- 27:36to figure out who the bad person or bad guy or girl is.
- 27:41So there was a point where I thought the second male lead, he
- 27:45tricked me. In my opinion, he was driving
- 27:48her from that orphanage or that rich people house in the car and
- 27:54the way man turned and looked at her, yeah, and said I know you
- 28:00can speak or something like that.
- 28:02That moment was very threatening for foreboding to me.
- 28:07So I was like, oh, is this? Is this my bad guy?
- 28:10And that's how he's written, right?
- 28:11He's presumably going to be the second male lead the love
- 28:15triangle between you and suck character Chase Subin and then
- 28:18this guy who's Ho Nam Jun that actor and he plays Sangu and
- 28:24that would have been fine. That would have been perfectly
- 28:26adequate. And then they changed it and
- 28:28were like, is this second male lead actually the villain and in
- 28:34on this plot and somehow pulling strings and you don't know and
- 28:38he sort of knows too much and what's going on here.
- 28:42Why is he inserting himself in this investigation?
- 28:44And I don't know. And maybe maybe the fact that
- 28:47he's a YouTube, what was he, he was like a doctor YouTube who,
- 28:52which have workout videos of himself, like shirtless and
- 28:56working out in the gym. And I'm like, OK, this guy
- 28:58exists. Like, first of all, second of
- 29:01all, yeah, I can believe a YouTube is sketchy and yeah, you
- 29:07know, has this double life or whatever, all of that taken
- 29:11together. It it was a lot of misdirections
- 29:13and red herrings. And he is a big red herring in
- 29:16this show. I agree.
- 29:18Did I hate it? Not really, because it was it
- 29:21was almost like on the list of concerns, like he's wasted way
- 29:24down here on the show. But once they kind of clear his
- 29:28name, I'm like, give me more. Like I'm confused, he's fine as
- 29:34shit, why am I here? That's true.
- 29:37That's true. And honestly, even for the
- 29:40reporter or the is she a reporter or like a?
- 29:43Yeah, she was like a news. Anchor, anchor even for her.
- 29:47They could have turned up the Mack Jong with her like really
- 29:51going after him in front of her face and she doesn't know she's
- 29:57the wife. And I expected a, I guess I
- 30:01expected a richer reveal, like she's the wife.
- 30:05And yeah, they could have done. It was just like a little with
- 30:11the second couple, like everything about them.
- 30:14Was. Was just a little lackluster for
- 30:18Dung Cutie that that's the actress who plays Judy, the news
- 30:23anchor. I just thought she was so nice
- 30:27and precious and refreshing because I thought from episode
- 30:30one that she was going to be in this mean girl role because she
- 30:35could have easily been the mean girl to hate.
- 30:39You. And that just didn't happen.
- 30:40She was a lot more layered. And I like this, this character
- 30:45a lot. And again, and she's just
- 30:47shortchanged in this show. I feel shortchanged with them
- 30:51too. You know what the show feels
- 30:53like and I want to shout out Marissa from the K3 'cause I
- 30:58visited her and she had this book of Korean, all the Korean
- 31:03actors, and it was sort of like a portfolio to sell them to
- 31:09Hollywood. This really like from beginning
- 31:13to end it felt like a promo video for you Yun suck to go on
- 31:21to bigger things, it really did. 100 percent, 100% because I'm
- 31:26not going to fault the show for having a pretty good male weed
- 31:30who can act his way through a shitty script.
- 31:33Like I'm sorry to tell you like that happens all the time.
- 31:36Anywhere you go, Hollywood and obviously K drama land.
- 31:40You can have a great actors spinning a bad script into gold,
- 31:44but to me it always it's very telling that they're just doing
- 31:49the best they can off of a crap script.
- 31:52Yeah, with what they've got. With what they got like he can
- 31:55give 110% and he's. Like.
- 31:59Doing something stupid, ridiculous, and that's the whole
- 32:04show. It's just a lot of ridiculous
- 32:06and they're doing the best they can.
- 32:11That's why I can't completely hate it, because they worked
- 32:15really hard and you can. I don't think I've seen.
- 32:20That I don't fault the actors. True, that's a story.
- 32:25They don't have anything to do with the scripts.
- 32:27They don't write it. They didn't write the web novel.
- 32:31They have really nothing to do with the issues that we're
- 32:33talking about because they're unless they were acting shit.
- 32:37They did their job right. Like I'm not mad at Yu Yun Sok,
- 32:40Chesubin Ho, Nam Jun or Dung Cutie.
- 32:44They showed up to work like it's a paycheck for them and they did
- 32:48what they were supposed. To.
- 32:49They did Pak. Jayun who plays.
- 32:51The kidnapper. He showed up and did what he.
- 32:54Was supposed to do. He played crazy, he was chewing
- 32:57up seeing her, he had these facial ticks and shit.
- 32:59And I'm like OK, I hope that check.
- 33:01Cleared. Because he's doing it, he's
- 33:04doing it. He's showing up it.
- 33:06It looks crazy, as it should, that whole storyline.
- 33:10Well, ridiculous. I don't know if we.
- 33:14Can get into it right now, but did you have a least favorite
- 33:18character? Least favorite?
- 33:20Character. Oh, I don't know, Actually,
- 33:25maybe No, I don't. Grandpa.
- 33:28The grandpa who died, OK. Yeah, that's Jung Dong Huang.
- 33:34He plays Pick Jungle. He's the patriarch who has giant
- 33:39portraits of himself and all of the properties the family owns.
- 33:44That guy, I knew he was. Oh God, I knew he was villain
- 33:48from jump because he was the dad in the airs.
- 33:53Yeah, that's. Right.
- 33:54Yes, He's never gotten. Off my shit list ever since the
- 33:57airs. I don't care that the airs is a
- 33:59bad show. Like I consider it a bad show.
- 34:02It's not good. But he again did his job.
- 34:05He was terrible. Bile made everybody miserable,
- 34:09and I'm like, he's going to keep doing that.
- 34:12Honestly. Him and Hiju's mom, I feel like
- 34:16they deserve each other. They do.
- 34:19Also the sister. The sister I did.
- 34:22Like what she did was shitty. Yes, we're gonna have to talk
- 34:25about. Her little and she was useless.
- 34:28Useless, useless. Character like her like.
- 34:32The sister and Hiju's dad. I'm just like what are you 2
- 34:36people doing here? The story you just taking up
- 34:39space. Exactly.
- 34:41It can't go on without. You like the sister coming back
- 34:44made no sense to me 'cause I feel like the story would have
- 34:48progressed at the pace it would have even if she weren't there.
- 34:55The dad who's in the facility, Hong E Ju's dad, yes, another
- 35:01completely. Like I feel like a lot of
- 35:03characters, side characters. Are just conduits.
- 35:06To push this ridiculous plot forward and they have like one
- 35:09line and then they do one thing and then they're they're written
- 35:13off like basically written off the show because they've served
- 35:15their purpose. And that's not how I view
- 35:19characters and so many characters right.
- 35:22We just actually like 4 characters that do one shitty
- 35:25thing and it like makes everything fall apart or.
- 35:29Or they don't do a shitty. Thing, but they express some
- 35:31craziness or have a line that serves some function in this
- 35:36plot and I don't think that makes a good character, no.
- 35:40I don't think so too. Kind of like the secretary.
- 35:45The secretary of yeah, the like minion guy.
- 35:49Peck sounds. Dad he had the most useless
- 35:53conversation that has ever happened in the history of K
- 35:57drama because I was just like he choose leaving.
- 36:00Can I get into it? OK, you know what?
- 36:03Let's just rate the show out of five soldier bottles and then
- 36:05we're going to get into the spoiler section and all bets are
- 36:08off. OK, I thought we went for the
- 36:11jugular in the non spoiler section, but oh, buckle up.
- 36:14So. What did What would you rate the
- 36:17show? Out of five soldier bottles, I'd
- 36:19rate it a four. Over 5 no.
- 36:24I can't believe. It so you would still rate it
- 36:27high? I'm still rating it high.
- 36:30I'm still rating it high because just for the experience.
- 36:34Yeah, what? About you, I would well.
- 36:37I would rate it to OK what? Would you rate Queen of Tears?
- 36:43Well, I haven't watched Queen of.
- 36:44Tears number one. OK, then that's the.
- 36:46End. OK, that's it.
- 36:48I'm not gonna say. But I have several people in my
- 36:53DMS who I don't know quarterly tell me to watch Queen of Tears.
- 36:58I'm here to set the record straight.
- 37:00I don't think I ever will watch Queen of Tears if you think
- 37:04that. What I'm?
- 37:05Saying on when the phone rings is harsh.
- 37:08I don't think you want me watching Queen of Tears.
- 37:10OK, I don't. And again, I am not here to to
- 37:15have a bad time watch AK drama that I didn't like.
- 37:18I tend to choose dramas based on if I will like them or not.
- 37:22And so I rarely drop dramas nowadays.
- 37:25I don't have high numbers of drops every year because I am
- 37:29choosy. I am curating what I watch.
- 37:33You really taught. Me to drop dramas, I'm so glad.
- 37:37I'm so glad. So at this point I'm not about
- 37:41hate watching. I someone brought up alchemy
- 37:43souls in my DMS too. They were like, I haven't felt
- 37:47this way since Alchemy souls and I was like, I don't want to talk
- 37:49about alchemy souls. That might have been my.
- 37:52Last hate watch I. That was two years ago.
- 37:55I don't like to do that OK to myself or to others now that I
- 38:00have a platform. I don't like to hate watch.
- 38:04This wasn't necessarily a full on hate watch because it was so
- 38:08crazy. I was like, you know what fuck
- 38:10it like but yeah, it wasn't good.
- 38:14I did not have a good time. Generally 2 soldier bottles I I
- 38:19pretty much disliked it. OK, but I.
- 38:21Found some. Merit.
- 38:22In it, there was something to latch onto and it wasn't the
- 38:27worst drama I've watched. It was not the.
- 38:30Worst. Drama I've watched but.
- 38:33It's it's. Pretty bad for like the current
- 38:36year, right? Like the current 2024-2025.
- 38:39But that's where I want. To push back though, because
- 38:422024 was a shitty year for K dramas.
- 38:47So I'm just. Like Nah, this was for 2024
- 38:51standard. This was a really good show.
- 38:54OK, I. I see where you're coming from.
- 38:58That's the bar is low. It's oh.
- 39:00The bat was in hell. I'm sorry.
- 39:04I'm sorry. OK.
- 39:06OK. Enough.
- 39:07Enough. We're going to get it to
- 39:08spoilers when the phone rings right after this.
- 39:14Excuse me, I can't tell. I can't.
- 39:17Tell you know I have no. Jingles.
- 39:20Oh, sorry. Swear, discussing shit.
- 39:25What? All right, we're on the other
- 39:29side. Of spoilers, Carol, I'm just
- 39:32going to set you loose. Really.
- 39:33Like, what do you want to talk about?
- 39:35OK, OK. First of all, back to the
- 39:38useless conversation that I mentioned with the secretary.
- 39:42So we see Hiju leaving and so she came to her in laws to say
- 39:47find my man. Yeah.
- 39:49And then she's like, do something.
- 39:50And they're like, we'll take it into consideration.
- 39:53It's like, wild, wild. Yeah.
- 39:56And at this point, she doesn't know that he's not other
- 39:59biological son. Exactly.
- 40:02So secretary comes out, he follows her and he's like, what
- 40:06else does he know about the kidnapper?
- 40:09And, you know, when he came into this house, he had surgery and
- 40:14his eye, like, they fixed up his eye and he doesn't remember.
- 40:19And I was just like, now hold on.
- 40:20Are you telling me that he's the twin of the kidnapper?
- 40:26Like, what is the point of that conversation?
- 40:28You just confused, babe. So, you know, when I watched
- 40:32that, I was like, you know what, Carol?
- 40:34Just hold your horses. Maybe next episode they'll do,
- 40:37like, a flashback of the conversation and give it
- 40:41context. No, context, never.
- 40:44Context was not in the room with us.
- 40:46Yeah, that was a Rd. Closed type of clue that they
- 40:50dropped there. It was like, oh, I drove to the
- 40:53end of this, where's the rest? Where's the rest?
- 40:57And who were you talking about? Because Mr. Kidnapper still has
- 41:02mismatched eyes, eye colours. So I was just like, oh, you
- 41:08wasted my time for free. OK, OK, let's move on to the
- 41:12next clue. Yeah, yeah.
- 41:15It was he because he made a point of stopping her.
- 41:18Yeah, the eye. He had his.
- 41:20Surgery to change his eye. Who had this?
- 41:24OK. Thanks.
- 41:26Yes. No.
- 41:27Make no sense. I.
- 41:29Yeah, I was. Really pissed off with that.
- 41:31And I know like, in the grand scheme of things and you know,
- 41:37the number of plot holes, it's really nothing.
- 41:41But I just, you wanted to talk about it.
- 41:44That one I wanted to talk. About because you wasted my
- 41:47goddamn time. I wanted to say this.
- 41:53Quote from Time magazine when I saw this.
- 41:58Article I was like. Time magazine is writing about
- 42:00when the phone rings, so here is what.
- 42:03It says. The story of two people
- 42:06overcoming issues of communication to be together.
- 42:09This may be highly relatable, but the story elements are
- 42:12intentionally taken to the mock Jung extreme than they have in
- 42:16parentheses. The descriptor mokjang is
- 42:18applied to a Korean drama that stretches its depiction of
- 42:21reality, putting its characters in increasingly extreme
- 42:24situations that heighten the stakes and emotions, and
- 42:27populating its world with toxic characters who often act
- 42:30contrary to any known system of logic.
- 42:34I spit up my water when I saw they're just defying logic.
- 42:38That is what a mokjang is. They go on to say.
- 42:42When the Phone Rings is one of the best Mokjang dramas we've
- 42:46gotten in a few years, with a plot driven by kidnapping,
- 42:51murder, contract marriages, arson, fake deaths, assumed
- 42:55identities and political intrigue.
- 42:57No. No, it's not OK.
- 43:01OK. I don't want to shade anybody,
- 43:05but of late, these writers, these reporters, Yeah, writing
- 43:12out of thin air. I'm just like me and you.
- 43:15We watch that show. What you're saying is not what
- 43:18was in the show, and I'll leave it at that.
- 43:21This show, I think a lot of people class it as a guilty
- 43:25pleasure. It is a guilty pleasure.
- 43:27I'd say that too. I think I started all right,
- 43:30like. Episode 1 is crazy.
- 43:33The writing is on the wall on episode 1, but it starts out
- 43:37kind of intriguing. Like this whole thing is
- 43:38masquerading as an enemies to lovers because at the end of the
- 43:42episode you find out she can freaking talk.
- 43:45She has the ability to speak and she's speaking.
- 43:47In a kidnapping scenario, she is.
- 43:51Mad as shit. She's angry with him, with what
- 43:54you overheard on the phone because he said like, bring me a
- 43:57body or something. Like I can't even remember what
- 43:58the line is. She loathes him and she starts
- 44:02with her blackmail shit, which was.
- 44:06Which was half baked at. Best it was home, girl was in
- 44:09over her head. How are you taking pictures?
- 44:12Of your thigh, Are you saying you're cheating?
- 44:15Like what was up? What was up with that?
- 44:17It was really. One of the worst plans I've ever
- 44:21seen. She didn't take 2 seconds to
- 44:24think it through. Of course, the phone.
- 44:27Is. Tracked everything she does on
- 44:29it is being recorded like I was confused like she just thought
- 44:33oh I'll pick up this phone and continue this and get out of
- 44:36this merit. I was literally like, all right,
- 44:39let's turn up, I guess go off sis, like, OK, which was so.
- 44:44Wild to. Me.
- 44:45Because I said, wait, is he not the one who said she's so clumsy
- 44:52and he can? See right.
- 44:53Through her, maybe he has selective vision, but he did not
- 44:59catch on at any point, even at the point where she's on the
- 45:03roof talking into the phone. No, honestly, I was just like.
- 45:07Now. Hold on, that was me the whole
- 45:12show. Like wait.
- 45:14Because wait, what? The other major?
- 45:20Gripe I had was I remember a conversation and I don't read, I
- 45:25don't know what episode it was, but I remember Pixon talking to
- 45:29Hiju and saying, oh, the sister must have seen younger Pixon and
- 45:37that's why there was a hit on the brother.
- 45:42And so I swear that conversation happened.
- 45:46So at the end when he asked, oh, does Heju know?
- 45:50And he disappears? I was like, no, but you already
- 45:53knew Heju knew, so where did you go?
- 45:58Like what happened to that whole conversation you had with her?
- 46:02And yeah, it was miscommunication.
- 46:04Even after they learned how to communicate 100%.
- 46:08What is that the? Only thing they know how to
- 46:10communicate. On is to kiss each other.
- 46:13And you know, I felt like this show overcompensated with with
- 46:20that. Because.
- 46:21It felt very much OK. The audience is getting pissed
- 46:24off that this doesn't make sense.
- 46:26Throw in a kiss. Oh yeah, let's just have a.
- 46:29Dream of a. Kiss Yeah, I dream of what
- 46:33could. Be if.
- 46:33They were communicating from day one.
- 46:37I swear. Joseph did.
- 46:38Not have that many dreams in the Bible like I was just like OK
- 46:43another dream and another dream like no it's.
- 46:47Embarrassing really. It's embarrassing.
- 46:49The like montages and things. And it could have been 8.
- 46:53Episodes. What a tease.
- 46:55Like this whole show? Is just a tease.
- 46:56It is a tease. It is.
- 47:00A tease and then. Like he did it and the whole
- 47:03miscommunication thing. He married her and this was a
- 47:07whole reveal. Like that wasn't really a
- 47:08reveal. You obviously knew he had the
- 47:12hots. For her he.
- 47:13Loves her, likes her, definitely knew about who he was asking for
- 47:18right when he swapped sisters in the contract marriage it was no.
- 47:23Surprise, I was like. I'm not surprised here.
- 47:26Yeah, he. Just didn't get to.
- 47:28Know her at all during the three years of their marriage.
- 47:32Because why? He didn't want to pressure her
- 47:35into a relationship that he thought she felt trapped in?
- 47:39Which, yeah, of course you'd feel trapped if you're not
- 47:41telling me what's going on. Shit.
- 47:43Like you know so. It was just a prison of his own
- 47:46making. True, but.
- 47:48We've also The show also established that Pexon had no
- 47:54relationship experience, like he was clueless when it came to
- 48:01relationships. And The thing is.
- 48:04I'm. Looking at their professions as
- 48:07well, yeah, he is. A.
- 48:10Erstwhile war correspondent, maybe a foreign operative, I
- 48:15don't fucking know. Like they they just like threw
- 48:17everything at the wall that he could do.
- 48:18He was basically Jason Bourne by the end of this whole thing.
- 48:21And currently he's a a spokesperson for the
- 48:26presidential office. Great.
- 48:27That means he's dealing with people all day long, fielding
- 48:31questions, taking interviews, talking to the press.
- 48:34And his whole thing is communicating.
- 48:38That's his whole job is to communicate a message and do it
- 48:42in in a proper way, in a way that makes sense to the Korean
- 48:47public. So I'm like, OK, he is
- 48:51communicating all day long and he has no other problems with
- 48:54even other family members like his fake, you know, father and
- 48:58mother. He's telling it like it is.
- 49:00He's constantly butting heads with them and communicating that
- 49:04he's not going to just go along with their plans.
- 49:08And when it comes to Heju, he can't seem to get any word in
- 49:14edgewise. Well, and I'm.
- 49:16Confounded. By the fact that it took first
- 49:19of all, they grew up together, they were basically neighbours.
- 49:23Never says anything when they're married and living in the same
- 49:26house again never says anything. I feel like it's just the toxic
- 49:32nature of how he got her into the marriage in the first place.
- 49:35I'm just like, let me just trap her.
- 49:37I'm doing it out of the best of intentions.
- 49:39I think she's got a terrible home life.
- 49:42She's about to be married off to some skeeze ball who's going to
- 49:44treat her badly. I'll just marry her, fine, fine,
- 49:49and keep the good intentions. But after he's got her in the
- 49:54house and he's setting up all of these boundaries and putting up
- 49:58walls and things between them. OK, beast, like, let's talk
- 50:03about it. I This is very Beauty and the
- 50:05Beast, true And I. Also believe that he really
- 50:10couldn't see past what he felt he was supposed to be doing,
- 50:16which is I do think I'd characterize him as a very
- 50:21narcissistic person because he's just so consumed with himself.
- 50:28And this whole thing of you were not part of my plan like Mana's
- 50:33tunnel vision focused on. I don't at this point, I can't
- 50:39even remember what the revenge was.
- 50:40I was confused about his revenge.
- 50:42Plan too. Was it just like I'm not going?
- 50:45To. Be part of your presidential
- 50:47ticket ticket candidacy and involved in any way and speak
- 50:51good of you. Was that his the end all be all
- 50:55of his revenge just to not let the father become the president
- 51:00and use his clout? Oh it.
- 51:03Couldn't have been just that. That would be maybe it was had
- 51:06to. Do with just like bringing the
- 51:07whole family down and revealing his identity especially.
- 51:11With the the. The ring that he put back on his
- 51:16dying grandpa. At that point, he thought he
- 51:19was. The grandpa and he was like, I
- 51:21need some dirt. I want to know what the hell is
- 51:22going on. I want to know who I am.
- 51:25Maybe I can get something out of it if I insert a camera into
- 51:28this signet ring and put it back on this man wheezing in the ICU.
- 51:33That maybe that had something to do with the revenge.
- 51:35But again, it's never really laid out A to B to C.
- 51:39It's always just like, I can't. I guess I have to infer here how
- 51:42he wants to raze this thing to the ground.
- 51:45But Even so, I didn't feel like he was particularly gung ho on
- 51:49any sort of revenge, no. And also, I feel like by the
- 51:53time he was putting the ring on grandpa, he knew that was his
- 51:57dad, not his. It's so.
- 52:00Ambiguous. It's not like he had a moment
- 52:04where he was like, I know I'm your son, I'm going to put this
- 52:07ring back on you because I think she's going to go down or I'm
- 52:11going to get something else out of you.
- 52:13No word about that, really. No clues there.
- 52:18I don't like this. Feeling of making me question
- 52:20why I read that it's a four out of five.
- 52:24The thing is, they had a lot. OK, so the good stuff about this
- 52:27show is basically whenever these two, the female lead and the
- 52:31male lead, are trapped in a room together, sparks fly, I guess.
- 52:35And that was at one point he, like, tried to pull up her skirt
- 52:39to see her. Oh yeah.
- 52:42Mole or. Something.
- 52:43That she had. The.
- 52:44Birthmark. And she was like, oh, stop.
- 52:47Like it was very like, OK, it's very kind of icky because she
- 52:52obviously doesn't want him touching her.
- 52:55She doesn't want him to. Pull up her.
- 52:57Skirt it's very sexual assaulty, a little whiff of sexual assault
- 53:02in here and people were salivating over the scene.
- 53:05They were like, Oh my God, he's so sexy.
- 53:07He just got done getting roasted in this weird fire that the
- 53:12kidnapper found his location and it exploded his secret office.
- 53:19See. But like.
- 53:20I, I did not like that scene, but in that scene I would have
- 53:26been asking hard questions because you have a bodyguard
- 53:29with this woman. You know her schedule, when does
- 53:33she have the time to go have an affair and take a picture of her
- 53:37thigh and post it up? And just even the POV, like I
- 53:42just felt like critical thinking wasn't part of the characters
- 53:46what critical skill set there was.
- 53:48Not even thinking at. All anyway he was looking.
- 53:52Trying. To look up her skirt and see the
- 53:54birthmark, or if there was a birthmark, to basically Fact
- 53:58Check the kidnapper on the phone.
- 54:01Yeah. And then she's shocked.
- 54:02That he's doing it and I'm just like, why would you be shocked?
- 54:07Why are you? Shocked you sent.
- 54:08Him the photo, it was such a stupid thing.
- 54:11Like to send her like he said she sent him like a.
- 54:14Boudoir. Photo and expected him to just
- 54:19take it and not like do any further investigating because he
- 54:24obviously at this point he's clueless doesn't know that's his
- 54:27wife on the phone. So he's like, Oh my God, does
- 54:31the kidnapper really have but the angle?
- 54:34Everything. About the photo that makes zero
- 54:37sense and her. Retrying and.
- 54:40Retrying and retrying to take the photo.
- 54:42I'm like bitch, give it up. Like, yeah.
- 54:46Even the. Mom who gave.
- 54:48Her the lingerie, she wasn't even committed.
- 54:51Quit. I was just like, what's what's
- 54:55your angle? What's your point?
- 54:58Because I guess she was like. Oh, I have two rabbits stuck in
- 55:01a cage together. I have to get them to breed.
- 55:04Yeah. Otherwise this whole charade is
- 55:07null and void. So she is the.
- 55:10Real mom of Hiju, Yeah. And she got.
- 55:13With. Dad and she dumped Dad and I
- 55:18guess she, this is me making up the story.
- 55:20I guess she moved into the House of the chairman.
- 55:25Oh, it was very the heirs. Coated.
- 55:27Yeah, it was very. Heirs coated, she, he.
- 55:30We had a mistress living. In the house, I don't know.
- 55:32Yeah, did where they actually. Married.
- 55:34And she? Was the official stepmom to to
- 55:38biological. Kids.
- 55:39No, I was thinking. More she came in and the older
- 55:45Hayan's mother died and then she's sort of like a caretaker
- 55:50who has her daughter living in the house just like airs.
- 55:54And then it turns into something more and she becomes sort of
- 55:59like a step mom to Hayan and he drew as her daughter.
- 56:04I just couldn't quite. Wrap.
- 56:06My head around the fact that the dad, he just step dad, left her
- 56:11in the house knowing everything, that she had been coercing her
- 56:17biological daughter Hiju to pretend to be mute, have
- 56:22selective mutism to maintain her position in this house.
- 56:27It didn't make sense and the dad knew the whole thing the whole
- 56:29time and he didn't. Say shit like that.
- 56:32Family does not care about Hiju no no.
- 56:36Nobody in the family cared about Hiju.
- 56:38At all, because otherwise the dad.
- 56:41Would be like. Hey, I know we're sleeping
- 56:44together every night. I think you can let your
- 56:46daughters talk now. Right.
- 56:50I'm not going to kick you out. Like again, where is what does
- 56:54it cost for some people to open their mouths and communicate
- 56:59because I really don't understand why the secrets why
- 57:02would he keep that secret? I'm sure I can understand the
- 57:06stepmom. He just mom keeping it up for 20
- 57:11years. But what's with the dad?
- 57:14So the dad hates he do. Is he getting a?
- 57:17Kick out of seeing. Them squirm and try and no
- 57:22tiptoe. Around him with this.
- 57:24Lie. I don't.
- 57:25I don't get that at all. I fell flat.
- 57:28Yeah, so many things. But yeah, like people were just
- 57:32gravitating, I guess toward the skinship in the in the show,
- 57:35100% the. I think it's episode. 2 where
- 57:39this is post the first kidnapping and she has some
- 57:43bruising on her neck and like a cut and stuff.
- 57:47He brags her into some dark room and pins are up against the wall
- 57:53and it's like inspecting her neck and stuff that shit.
- 57:57It is K drama crack it is. At this point in episode 2, it
- 58:01was. It worked, right?
- 58:03It did, yeah. It's book.
- 58:05Talk. Magic.
- 58:06Like that's what exactly I'm. Not going to fault the show for
- 58:09that, but like the whip of sexual assault on the latter one
- 58:13that we were having talking about about the mole inspection.
- 58:17Yeah. I don't know if I would
- 58:18necessarily classify that as sexy.
- 58:21Sure, he looks good, but you can see me disassociating like
- 58:27further into the more deeper into the show I get.
- 58:31I remember after like. Episode 2 calling him a green
- 58:35flag. No, you didn't.
- 58:38I did. I did.
- 58:40Was it episode 2 or maybe on a later episode?
- 58:42Because like you said, immediately you knew he loved
- 58:46her. Yeah, he cared for her for sure.
- 58:48Yeah, he cared for her. And I just think I really, there
- 58:54was 1 scene that I appreciated which he didn't really even go
- 58:59all the way when they were lying in bed at one point.
- 59:03And he's like, just forget everything that you heard and
- 59:08that was said or something like that.
- 59:11I think I thought that was the beginning of an apology.
- 59:15He could have definitely gone all the way with an apology or
- 59:20an explanation, but it goes back to that lack of communication
- 59:25between them. But even with that, she seemed
- 59:28content with that explanation. And I was like, OK, if it works
- 59:34for you, girl, it will work for me.
- 59:36Whatever, but I. Just found.
- 59:39There were moments of sheer panic from him at the thought of
- 59:45danger coming to her. Yeah, that's good stuff.
- 59:49Those those were the moments I. Really enjoyed because I just
- 59:54felt like his face. He was very expressive.
- 59:59You could see fear, you could see anger.
- 1:00:01I was like, OK. OK, Ian, suck.
- 1:00:04Do something here. You can give it some go off, go
- 1:00:08off. Yeah, but.
- 1:00:09Yeah, so I I liked those scenes, but I did.
- 1:00:12That's not bad stuff at all, no. I'm not complaining about that
- 1:00:15stuff. It's, it's plot related stuff.
- 1:00:18And the show functions best when I guess you're watching it as
- 1:00:24it's airing because you do get that break where you can come up
- 1:00:28with theories. Yeah, about the show, where it's
- 1:00:30headed, who's who. And that's what's fun with the
- 1:00:33groupthink aspect of social media is you read a theory and
- 1:00:38you're like, Oh my God, I agree, or no, I don't agree.
- 1:00:41Or, you know, something actually being right.
- 1:00:44Like you, you make a theory and it's right.
- 1:00:47It turns out to be right. That's the fun, I guess, of
- 1:00:50watching this unhinged show. I don't watch shows when they're
- 1:00:54airing, so I'm completely removed from this.
- 1:00:58I don't really get a thrill necessarily out of making
- 1:01:02theories about the show. I don't necessarily thrive off
- 1:01:06of the. Theories and I feel like people
- 1:01:08were really excited to come and talk about the show and like
- 1:01:12who's the killer and who's the you know who owns the phone and
- 1:01:17suck a male lead. He's shady and all this stuff.
- 1:01:19I get it. I get it.
- 1:01:21I don't subscribe to that. I asked on Instagram for people
- 1:01:25to give me their thoughts, concerns, topics they wanted us
- 1:01:30to cover on this podcast. Some people said great couple.
- 1:01:34He looks great in a black shirt. Perfect.
- 1:01:38Yeah, that, yeah. Fine, fine, sure.
- 1:01:41Argon plotline, super weird. Last two episodes look
- 1:01:45ridiculous and weird. It seems like mock young easy to
- 1:01:48watch actually. What's bothering me?
- 1:01:50How is the kidnapper so smart to control the female lead's car?
- 1:01:53Unless I miss something, I stopped trying to find logic and
- 1:01:56just enjoy the story without paying attention to some
- 1:01:58details. Truly messy show.
- 1:02:01I think they pulled off being compelling and sensational at
- 1:02:03the beginning, but the writing relied so heavily on being
- 1:02:06sensational instead of writing their characters to be logical.
- 1:02:09Maybe this is just the mock Jong way.
- 1:02:12Someone else said cheese fest. All of these things are true,
- 1:02:16someone said. So much waste of potential plot
- 1:02:18holes galore in an absurd ending.
- 1:02:20Yeah, you're right. You're right.
- 1:02:24So what's this was so funny. I love when people read a lot
- 1:02:27into it, as in like, they're squeezing milk out of an almond.
- 1:02:34You know what I'm saying? To get almond milk.
- 1:02:37And this person said Pixelmon is a man of his words.
- 1:02:40Heju is a woman of her actions. They were talking about the
- 1:02:44journey that he do goes on, which is, you know, she was
- 1:02:47faking being. Her.
- 1:02:48Own kidnapper and blackmailing her husband to give her a
- 1:02:52divorce then she goes to transitions to trusting and
- 1:02:56loving him unconditionally and protecting him at all costs,
- 1:03:01even with a knife at. Her throat at.
- 1:03:02The, I don't know, 10th kidnapping, so on and so forth.
- 1:03:06And that's fine. Like, yeah, that sure.
- 1:03:08That's a journey. Did I care?
- 1:03:11No, no, that's my. Point.
- 1:03:14It's like. For me personally, man, I didn't
- 1:03:17give a shit. I feel you.
- 1:03:21Are there any other? Complaints that you had about
- 1:03:23the show before we go into the last two episodes.
- 1:03:27Well, let's talk about the sister, OK?
- 1:03:30This girl comes. Back from.
- 1:03:32Overseas, she was Mia, they didn't know where she was for
- 1:03:35three years, fucked off on her wedding, leaving Heju to clean
- 1:03:39up the mess and be the substitute.
- 1:03:41Fine, we now know that Pixone orchestrated this whole thing,
- 1:03:45was in cahoots with the sister, and like, requested he choose to
- 1:03:50be his bride. Fine, fine, fine.
- 1:03:53She comes back. Yeah, I did not like this
- 1:03:57character. I didn't like how they
- 1:03:58miraculously found some surgical cure to fix her vocal cords or
- 1:04:04whatever damage was done during the accident.
- 1:04:06As a child she never learned how to use sign language in all of
- 1:04:12the, I don't know, 20 years that she was mute?
- 1:04:16No, she wasn't mute. She.
- 1:04:17Was hard of hearing oh. Was it hard of hearing?
- 1:04:20Oh. Man, I'm sorry.
- 1:04:21I'm sorry. Well, she would.
- 1:04:23Be mute because. She can't hear.
- 1:04:25Was she mute? No, no, no, I, I think it.
- 1:04:28Was hard of hearing. She lost her hearing.
- 1:04:29You're right. Yeah, yeah, yeah, my bad, my
- 1:04:31bad. But anyway, surgical cure to fix
- 1:04:34her ears and her hearing and she never learned sign language in
- 1:04:39all those years. Nope.
- 1:04:41And I'm like. How?
- 1:04:42Much. Of a selfish, self pitying bitch
- 1:04:46you. Have to be.
- 1:04:48To not only not refuse to learn that you're silencing yourself.
- 1:04:53At that point you had 20 years to learn how to sign.
- 1:04:58She doesn't. And instead she's holding out
- 1:05:01hope that she can just miraculously get cured.
- 1:05:04And she does. They give it to her that she
- 1:05:07does get cured. And then when she comes back and
- 1:05:10talks to Heju, she's like T he's sorry.
- 1:05:13I knew that you could speak all of these years and you made
- 1:05:18yourself be silent just to keep me company in my miserable state
- 1:05:24because I needed to bring somebody down here with me.
- 1:05:28That was trash. And.
- 1:05:29It's experienced this. Calamity, even though you didn't
- 1:05:31need to, whether out of guilt or some misguided idea that you're
- 1:05:36getting a kicked out if you're whole Let's be friends that that
- 1:05:40was the whole. Speech at the aquarium.
- 1:05:44Yep, that was her. Arc actually she didn't even say
- 1:05:47sorry. She.
- 1:05:48Was just like I knew that you could speak.
- 1:05:53But now I can speak. So.
- 1:05:54All is well, all is forgiven. Let's pick up where we left off
- 1:05:58and I'm like fuck you, bitch. What the fuck do you mean?
- 1:06:02No, she was a. Horrible person, just so
- 1:06:05selfish. She was very selfish.
- 1:06:08And I actually felt bad for her because she has a look of I'm
- 1:06:15going to be a bitch in the show. And so you're always
- 1:06:20anticipating her to do something shady, something that will harm
- 1:06:26Hiju, etcetera. And then she's just like, no,
- 1:06:29no, I'm endearing. I just want to be friends.
- 1:06:32I love myself. I've always wanted a sister.
- 1:06:35I just don't like her mom. It it's just fell flat for me
- 1:06:41because, you know, I don't fault her too much for being a kid and
- 1:06:46pretending because she wanted someone to go through the pain
- 1:06:50with her. I I really don't fault her for
- 1:06:54that because at her big age though, at.
- 1:06:56Her big age though, How old was she she?
- 1:06:59Was older than. He do No, no when when?
- 1:07:02They had the accident. They were kids.
- 1:07:05Oh yeah, When they had the. Accident.
- 1:07:07They were kids, yeah, but as they.
- 1:07:10Grew up. That's what I'm saying is like
- 1:07:12at her. Big age, that's true.
- 1:07:14She should have fixed it a long time.
- 1:07:16Where's the apology like you went to?
- 1:07:18College like you, your frontal lobe is fully developed that's
- 1:07:22true where's. The.
- 1:07:24Come to Jesus moment which to me tells.
- 1:07:27Me that she isn't a good person. No.
- 1:07:30If you were a kid, let's say you were like up to 14.
- 1:07:34She was like a preteen. The older sister was when she
- 1:07:38lost her hearing. Oh, she's not a good.
- 1:07:41Person, we can't defend her in any way I can see maybe.
- 1:07:45Keeping it up until you're, I don't know, in high school,
- 1:07:49Yeah, yeah. I can't.
- 1:07:52There's just no. Empathy.
- 1:07:54Coming from honing that character and I couldn't get
- 1:07:58behind her character, couldn't get behind anything she did.
- 1:08:02Even the apology at the end of the show, I was like 11th hour,
- 1:08:07yeah. No, I.
- 1:08:09Agree so I felt like she shouldn't have come back and he
- 1:08:13I heed you is such. A old school female lead, right?
- 1:08:18Yes. Being gaslit by everyone, even
- 1:08:21to the point of shouting stop gaslighting me I'm like bitch
- 1:08:25you knew they've been gaslighting.
- 1:08:29Like she's. Stupid and naive and very warm
- 1:08:34hearted. Innocent at heart and did
- 1:08:39everything just to be loved. And ain't no love coming from
- 1:08:43anybody in that family. Just got bamboozled and
- 1:08:46hoodwinked into shutting up for 20 years.
- 1:08:50Yeah, that. Type of female.
- 1:08:52Lead. That's very 2006, yeah.
- 1:08:56Yeah, I agree 2024 we're. Getting this lead and everyone's
- 1:09:02like, Oh my God, poor Heeju, poor this.
- 1:09:04I'm like, this is very old school of a characterization.
- 1:09:09And something else about Heeju is that when she was signing,
- 1:09:14she was very animated, she was very feisty, she had a lot of
- 1:09:18gumption and. She was serving.
- 1:09:21Attitude and and you know, getting angry and things at
- 1:09:24people when she's signing at them, when she stopped signing,
- 1:09:30it's almost like all of those qualities go away and that's why
- 1:09:33a man said. He enjoys, that's why he said he
- 1:09:37enjoys the heju that was on the phone with him.
- 1:09:41Matter of fact, they had to address.
- 1:09:42It in the final episode, in the final two minutes of the show,
- 1:09:46they had to address this crazy character switch that happened
- 1:09:50when she stopped signing. She lost a whole bunch of
- 1:09:53personality traits and she had to come and tell her like, hey.
- 1:09:58I want you to get angry with me. I want you to tell me what's
- 1:10:00going on and communicate. I want you to nag me and I'm
- 1:10:03like, does that fix? It I.
- 1:10:06Don't think so, but OK, great on you for putting this the
- 1:10:10stipulation here in your marriage for her to open up a
- 1:10:15bit more because she was pissed when she was.
- 1:10:19Signing. She was she.
- 1:10:21Was and, you know, you know, I hadn't even thought of that.
- 1:10:25I think I was just focused on when she could speak, she was
- 1:10:31letting him have it. And she definitely met made him
- 1:10:35nervous or made him pay attention.
- 1:10:39But when she didn't speak, it was just like, oh, this is the
- 1:10:43chaser, Ben. I know.
- 1:10:45Yeah, this is. Why I don't?
- 1:10:48Watch her but surprisingly and like press tours and whatnot,
- 1:10:53she's very spunky like Chase had.
- 1:10:56Been the. Actress.
- 1:10:58So I was just like sis. Why are you?
- 1:11:01Always so dull. Yes, it's just just.
- 1:11:04So dull. Every time she.
- 1:11:06Wasn't on the phone and she wasn't signing.
- 1:11:10Was like she was a non playable character.
- 1:11:12Like she just like, where'd she go?
- 1:11:15Yeah, like a Sims. Character.
- 1:11:17Just stuck and waiting for waiting for him to save her
- 1:11:22because. I can't lost count of how many
- 1:11:24times and she was kidnapped. Waiting to be saved.
- 1:11:27I mean, you fucking name it like they did it to this girl.
- 1:11:31Let's talk about episode 6 because we mentioned.
- 1:11:35Episode 6. Before the break, so.
- 1:11:38What had happened was. They went hiking as a group
- 1:11:42activity in the presidential spokesperson's office.
- 1:11:47This turned into an office romance.
- 1:11:48I do not like office romances, I have to say.
- 1:11:51So when it turned out that she was starting to work with him
- 1:11:54alongside him, interpreting for him, I was like another thing
- 1:11:59that I can't just rubs me the wrong way.
- 1:12:03They go hiking with the rest of the group.
- 1:12:06And the guy that you mentioned, Nin Chilsu, who plays like the
- 1:12:11office manager or something. Yes, OK.
- 1:12:14So that guy he's in there for? Comedic relief.
- 1:12:16But he was climbing that mountain and he was huffing and
- 1:12:20puffing. He had two walking sticks.
- 1:12:22People were like, wow, this is really hard to climb up the
- 1:12:26mountain. This is my train of thought.
- 1:12:28I was like, I feel seen because I fucking hate hiking.
- 1:12:33And I'm always that person who is 50 steps behind, always
- 1:12:38falling behind. I almost died in the the Canyon
- 1:12:42in Las Vegas doing like a fun little hike.
- 1:12:44Yeah, the fuck not. Hills and shit and rock
- 1:12:47scrambling. No, no, you're going to get a
- 1:12:50different Jessica. It's a mess.
- 1:12:51I am a sight to behold. And when I saw that character,
- 1:12:56the office manager, I was like, Oh my God, you'd never see this
- 1:13:00in the K dramas where someone's actually struggling to do one of
- 1:13:04these mountain hikes. That's true.
- 1:13:05I hate. Hiking I hate hiking and.
- 1:13:08Then they come to the lookout point.
- 1:13:11He gets inundated with fans trying to take selfies.
- 1:13:15He gets her shit rock. She gets pushed off of this
- 1:13:21lookout point. It's a sheer drop.
- 1:13:24She falls off a mountain. It's a basically a Cliff and
- 1:13:28I'm. Like, Oh my God.
- 1:13:30She died. Like I was like, there's no.
- 1:13:33Way. There's no way she survived that
- 1:13:35fall. Not only did she survive, she
- 1:13:38thrived. She had no broken bones near a
- 1:13:42scratch. She was fine Babe.
- 1:13:47People break ankles. Just missing.
- 1:13:48A step on the stairs. It was hard on.
- 1:13:53Me. This is the point where I said,
- 1:13:56you know what? I don't have to finish this
- 1:13:58show. They're not.
- 1:13:59Taking this seriously? This is insulting that.
- 1:14:04They would even think. That I would suspend my
- 1:14:08disbelief that this girl would survive a severe fall.
- 1:14:14They were so serious when he's trying to find her, calling her
- 1:14:20and getting of her to call him on the kidnappers phone and
- 1:14:25where are you and of this roundabout thing and him like
- 1:14:29traversing the mountain at night by himself.
- 1:14:33It was done sincerely. It really was.
- 1:14:37And I'm like get. The fuck out of here.
- 1:14:42Listen, he was like just beside. Himself wanting to save her,
- 1:14:45couldn't get to her. You've got to be joking.
- 1:14:49I you. Listen, I loved seeing him in
- 1:14:55pain, seeing him in anguish, seeing him desperate.
- 1:15:01I loved that. But I.
- 1:15:05Also understand what you're saying.
- 1:15:06Oh my God. When episode.
- 1:15:08Six happened. I shook my head.
- 1:15:10I was like, no, we can't keep going.
- 1:15:14They have all this great hospital like time and he's
- 1:15:18taking care of her and he never left her side and I'm like, she
- 1:15:22should be dead. She should.
- 1:15:25Be in a body bag. I was beside myself.
- 1:15:28So then episode 6 happened. I check out, I checked out.
- 1:15:32I was like, there's nothing they can do that's going to be like
- 1:15:35worse than this because we've reached a big low here.
- 1:15:40Oh my God, the unraveling the spaghetti in the last 6 episodes
- 1:15:46to figure. Out.
- 1:15:47Who the real kidnapper was and how Pakhtoje, who was his right
- 1:15:54hand man, was like a. Kidnapper.
- 1:15:58And hacker extraordinaire and that he was a twin at the
- 1:16:03orphanage school who lost his twin back in the day, presumably
- 1:16:08from the murders that happened. And I mean, it escalates from
- 1:16:15there. Yeah.
- 1:16:16I was messaging. You going?
- 1:16:18How the fuck did? Pacto.
- 1:16:22J the right hand man fall ass backward into enlisting the real
- 1:16:30murderer AKA the real Pakhseon into being his puppet and
- 1:16:38exacting this revenge and kidnapping ploy.
- 1:16:41That was not it. And then he was, I was like, how
- 1:16:45did? Even Pakthoje get all of this
- 1:16:48information about the murderers because that was under lock and
- 1:16:52key. That family LED none of that
- 1:16:55slip of who was the real culprit and there was no police
- 1:16:59investigation. I'm like did he sniff the
- 1:17:01leaves? Like I'm did he put his ear to
- 1:17:04the ground and just the earth told him?
- 1:17:06Like I'm confused about how even that dude got his Intel.
- 1:17:11Because. No one.
- 1:17:13Gave it to him. No one gave it to him.
- 1:17:15He was. He just divine it, just figured
- 1:17:17it out. But how?
- 1:17:20Maybe his brother who? Had died, visited him in a dream
- 1:17:25and told him and you know that the show could have gone with
- 1:17:28that and we'd have to believe but.
- 1:17:32That didn't make. Sense and then the whole and
- 1:17:35they tried to explain why he got together with the real pyxeon
- 1:17:41and I was just like, this is so lazy.
- 1:17:43Like what are we? What are we?
- 1:17:46Doing so that. Was they let that guy?
- 1:17:48Go like the real pixon slash kidnapper.
- 1:17:52They let that guy go, I don't know, half dozen times he
- 1:17:56escapes after kidnapping people and clobbering them over the
- 1:18:01head. And lots of attempted murder
- 1:18:04here. I don't understand why the real
- 1:18:07kidnapper was mad at the fake pixon like that.
- 1:18:11Seems a little misguided because obviously that's not the guy who
- 1:18:17that's. Not the guy you should be.
- 1:18:19Exacting your avenger. Like I don't know why he chose
- 1:18:23Pixon Yu Yun Suk's character as his target because that kid had
- 1:18:29nothing to do with the switcheroo that.
- 1:18:32Happened. And you almost dying.
- 1:18:35I think he really. Thought Park Dolce Really
- 1:18:38thought Pexon killed his brother.
- 1:18:41Yeah, but I'm like, how'd you get?
- 1:18:42That name? No contacts.
- 1:18:45No contacts. No.
- 1:18:47Nothing there. They're just like, he's just
- 1:18:48like, I thought it was you and you were my main suspect.
- 1:18:51Then I had to figure out if it was you.
- 1:18:53And so I hatched this kidnapping plan with the real guy.
- 1:19:01They'd like tried to explain it. They were like, oh, he was
- 1:19:04coming out of the office building talking crazy,
- 1:19:09threatening Pixel. And he's like, OK, perfect blunt
- 1:19:13instrument to use this stupid plan.
- 1:19:17I was just floored. Yeah, I agree with.
- 1:19:20You, it was very much the enemy of my enemy is my friend.
- 1:19:24I think that's what they were trying to go for.
- 1:19:27Absolutely. And.
- 1:19:29I feel. Like man was on a fool's errand,
- 1:19:32like his whole life was a joke and I just felt so bad for him.
- 1:19:39I feel like if he had partnered with Doctor Slash YouTube, oh
- 1:19:47that would make more sense because Mr. YouTube had
- 1:19:51something to work off. He had incomplete files.
- 1:19:54But at least he had a memory to go off of.
- 1:19:56And he was like, oh, I saw this kid and I played with him.
- 1:19:59Yeah. And the kid was near.
- 1:20:02Yeah. But the whole the other part is
- 1:20:05why couldn't young pixel on be outside?
- 1:20:09And why was it such a huge secret like someone had seen him
- 1:20:13because he had sociopathic. Tendencies.
- 1:20:16And they were like, oh, he's killing the squirrels, we need
- 1:20:20to lock him. Away.
- 1:20:21And then the locking key was nothing to this little murderer
- 1:20:25because he went out to the local orphanage and was really having
- 1:20:29a ball. Like he I think he took out like
- 1:20:314 kids, yes. And they knew about it.
- 1:20:34Because they were consistently getting rid of the bodies.
- 1:20:37It's wild. So I.
- 1:20:39Was like wow. Wow, wow, wow.
- 1:20:41Like what else? What else?
- 1:20:43And I think the the. Thing that drove me nuts a
- 1:20:47little bit. One of the very few things that
- 1:20:50drove to nuts. Is you know when you.
- 1:20:52Watch that show with Ijungi where he takes the place of the
- 1:21:00murderer. It's that flower of evil, right?
- 1:21:03Flower of Evil. Oh, it is.
- 1:21:05Yeah, it is Flower of Evil. So in Flower of Evil he is very
- 1:21:10much like you see the parents actively covering their kids
- 1:21:15tracks and and whatnot. But in this show, the parents
- 1:21:20don't really cover his tracks. They're not invested.
- 1:21:23It was grandpa who was invested in covering everything and they
- 1:21:28were just hating on grandpa. So even the real Pex Allen's
- 1:21:32parents weren't as invested in their son.
- 1:21:38And it just made it feel like you're such a lazy villain.
- 1:21:43I don't even understand because they didn't even know that
- 1:21:48Hiju's dad had a deal with grandpa.
- 1:21:51Like they were just in the show. Like we were watching Clueless.
- 1:21:59Oh. But you know going into.
- 1:22:00The final two episodes that mom lost her shit.
- 1:22:04She did that, mom. Lost her ever loving.
- 1:22:07Shit. And she crashed out.
- 1:22:09I was. Not following.
- 1:22:10Her line of logic, and maybe you're not supposed to.
- 1:22:15She was just mad. She was mad at the old man.
- 1:22:19The grandpa. Yeah.
- 1:22:20That he hoodwinked her into raising his own child.
- 1:22:24Because that's who Yu Yun Suk's character is.
- 1:22:27Nice. We don't know who his mom is,
- 1:22:30but his daddy is the grandpa character.
- 1:22:34Yo, I was waiting. For the show, because she hated
- 1:22:38and that was the theory too, that people.
- 1:22:40Had you had this theory too? Yes, I was.
- 1:22:43Waiting for the show to tell me that maybe grandpa sexually
- 1:22:47assaulted her and the fake pixel on is actually her son.
- 1:22:52That's why she loathed the old. Man, yeah.
- 1:22:55So I was just she was spitting on his portrait.
- 1:22:58And shit and just, yo, she was she.
- 1:23:00Was ready to host. Yeah, she.
- 1:23:02Killed him. So I just felt like OK to even
- 1:23:06be mad. After years later that you've he
- 1:23:10stuck a pillow in his face and he died at your hands, she still
- 1:23:16don't feel. Like he's.
- 1:23:17Gotten the what? He deserves punishment.
- 1:23:20Yeah. What he deserves.
- 1:23:22Yeah, she's still spitting. On.
- 1:23:23Him and kidnapping some innocent girl here, you know she kidnaps
- 1:23:28Heeju. It's all to fuck with Pixel and
- 1:23:33Yuyun Suk's character, the fake Pixel, and I'm just.
- 1:23:37Like why? What what was the her long con
- 1:23:41was literally I'm going to keep this girl hidden for 20 years,
- 1:23:46same as my son was missing for 20 years whom I thought was dead
- 1:23:54and I'm going to make. Sure, Yuyun Suk.
- 1:23:55Is in pain. He's suffering.
- 1:23:57He thinks his beloved is dead. And then I'm going to pull the
- 1:24:01rabbit out of the hat and here she is.
- 1:24:03You've lost. 20. Years of time together again.
- 1:24:08This doesn't seem it's very much the same as he do.
- 1:24:13Calling you gonna suck every night half baked.
- 1:24:17Intriguing. Plot.
- 1:24:19Intriguing thought lady, but 20 years?
- 1:24:22You think you could keep this up for 20 years?
- 1:24:24Yeah, No. It didn't.
- 1:24:26It didn't. Home girl.
- 1:24:27Yeah. So who would you say?
- 1:24:30Which character made sense on the show?
- 1:24:33Which character made sense? I would say the dad like.
- 1:24:39The presidential hopeful dad OK 'cause he.
- 1:24:43Was pretty. Not easy to read, but I would
- 1:24:46just say he made sense. He made sense.
- 1:24:49He was focused on being the presidential candidate, on
- 1:24:52winning that. He's highly regulated.
- 1:24:55Everything about him is a regulated, can't control his
- 1:24:59emotions, he's violent, he's has outbursts.
- 1:25:03And I was like, yeah, I get that guy.
- 1:25:06I think I got him. And I got Hanum June, yes, the
- 1:25:11second male. Lead.
- 1:25:12Yeah, the second male lead. Those are the only two people I
- 1:25:15got. He's just dad.
- 1:25:17I did not. No, I didn't get that.
- 1:25:19That step dad like. Hated her.
- 1:25:21I'm convinced the condone SIL. He condoned it basically for 20
- 1:25:26years. Yeah, and then has a.
- 1:25:29Oh, she can talk. Oh God, so.
- 1:25:32And I have my notes because I went ape shit taking notes on
- 1:25:36episodes 11 and 12. None of the other episodes I
- 1:25:39have notes for but 11:00 and 12:00.
- 1:25:40I was like let me sit down here and watch this and write some
- 1:25:43notes down I have here. Is she out of her fucking mind?
- 1:25:49If something happens. To her, these were her
- 1:25:51instructions, right? The mom's instructions where if
- 1:25:55something happens to her, she has the secretary.
- 1:25:59Such bodyguard. I can't even say save my
- 1:26:04murderous son and kill he do. No sense whatsoever, No.
- 1:26:09Sense No. Sense at all She was like, I'm
- 1:26:12still going to go for the revenge and I'm still going to
- 1:26:15be behind my son who's literally murdered like four or five
- 1:26:19innocent children, a couple of people, I think fully grown
- 1:26:23adults, I think during the cross of the show, just completely
- 1:26:26unhinged, cannot redeem him or just medicate away this
- 1:26:32sociopathic murderous tendency. Yeah, let him out.
- 1:26:38Let him free and kill this innocent girl.
- 1:26:41I just don't understand like the beef that she had was so deep
- 1:26:46and for what? Nada, Just.
- 1:26:49Yeah, the fucking underground. Chamber with the two bank
- 1:26:52vaults. Oh my gosh.
- 1:26:56And the the assistant. This I'm sorry.
- 1:26:59The secretary opens it with a key that slots into the lock on
- 1:27:04the old man's portrait and the lock was his signet ring.
- 1:27:08I have in my notes. What in the parasite in all
- 1:27:10caps? I was.
- 1:27:13I was. Expecting I don't know why I was
- 1:27:15expecting that too, but the way the secretary was going hard for
- 1:27:20mom, I thought he was gonna be the father of oh the real pixon
- 1:27:27and maybe they had an affair like that's there's so many ways
- 1:27:33and The thing is what's sad is you're.
- 1:27:34Coming up with better mock John. That's what's sad is.
- 1:27:40That. Probably both of us can sit here
- 1:27:42and spitball a better show that's even more outrageous, but
- 1:27:47it works better than what we got.
- 1:27:50That's true. That's true, but maybe that's
- 1:27:53what was sustaining me because my active imagination was just
- 1:28:00running wild with this could have and this could happen and
- 1:28:05and then I just get disappointed like and then you're just like,
- 1:28:08oh. Oh.
- 1:28:11I got mad when the. Secretary, let's heed you out.
- 1:28:14Yeah, which I felt like was very Snow White, Right, Snow White
- 1:28:17and the Huntsman type of deal where like the huntsman's like,
- 1:28:20she's after your heart run away and very much Snow White coated.
- 1:28:25So she gets out and I'm like, OK, so she's been starving
- 1:28:29herself for four days. She has energy.
- 1:28:33And her hair looks perfectly. Clean.
- 1:28:36Her skin is moisturized and it just wasn't computing.
- 1:28:39If I don't get out of bed for a day, I look like shit.
- 1:28:44She was locked in. A bank vault basically for four
- 1:28:48days. Was not eating, barely drinking.
- 1:28:53She looks like she came out of the salon.
- 1:28:57She did crash her car. And then was taken.
- 1:29:00Yeah, she crashed into the. Fucking barrier.
- 1:29:03So where's the neck brace? Like I'm, I was just like, Oh my
- 1:29:07God, this show just. Don't understand?
- 1:29:12Why? The cop was like, I'm going to
- 1:29:13follow closely behind you. I was like, OK.
- 1:29:17Great, great. Great, Got it.
- 1:29:19Noted that cop was 15 minutes behind them.
- 1:29:22Yeah, yeah. He was.
- 1:29:24I mean, what protection? What Police protection?
- 1:29:27That's what I. Mean by incompetent police I
- 1:29:30cannot do it and then. This fucking.
- 1:29:33Guy you young sucks character. Once the real pixon comes up
- 1:29:38with a shotgun or a rifle and is taunting them from outside the
- 1:29:42vehicle, I'm like OK, perfect. Yu Yun Suk is.
- 1:29:47Going to step. On the gas and run this guy
- 1:29:49over. That was in my mind.
- 1:29:51I was like, OK, this is what's going to happen next.
- 1:29:53No, no, no, that's not what happens.
- 1:29:55Yu Yun Suk. Gets.
- 1:29:57Out of the car and I was like just run him the fuck over.
- 1:30:02You have a one like a 1 1/2 ton vehicle.
- 1:30:06He's not going to brace himself and make it OK.
- 1:30:10It was baffling, baffling. That choice for him to get out
- 1:30:14of the car and face off against him one-on-one.
- 1:30:17Enough time for the cops to come and surround him.
- 1:30:20And then we see this nightmare scenario that happens in Heju's
- 1:30:24head, where kids get shot by the killer, by the real.
- 1:30:30Just stop. Just.
- 1:30:31Stop with it these terrible edits.
- 1:30:35Oh my gosh. And then the real pixel.
- 1:30:38On just says a word to him and his whole world crumbles.
- 1:30:43What Listen to? Me.
- 1:30:47Hiju has never spoken about the stepbrother, has never shown
- 1:30:52interest in the stepbrother. We don't have a scene of her
- 1:30:56going to the mausoleum or the grave of this little boy and
- 1:31:01paying her respects and feeling so sorry and missing him and all
- 1:31:04that shit. We don't have any sort of
- 1:31:06relationship. That's a word.
- 1:31:08For her SO. What?
- 1:31:10Why does you Yunsuk think? Oh my God, I need to fuck off
- 1:31:16across the world to Argon and Ghoster.
- 1:31:20You know what I thought? I.
- 1:31:22Really thought he was going to say or it was going to be
- 1:31:26revealed. It was actually grandpa who was
- 1:31:29killing the kids and framed the real Pixar on and got rid of him
- 1:31:35so he'd feel like, Oh my gosh, it was my dad.
- 1:31:39That's what I thought too. I thought.
- 1:31:41Oh, maybe that killer is just crazy because he was almost
- 1:31:45drowned to death by exactly a grandfather.
- 1:31:49So that's. What where all the ticks and all
- 1:31:52of his mania comes from? But no, it's not what what you
- 1:31:56said, which was had this working theory that the old man was the
- 1:31:58real killer of all the orphanage kids.
- 1:32:00Yeah. And he was blaming it on PIXA
- 1:32:03and or just. Killing his grandchild because
- 1:32:05he's. Murderer, which would to me
- 1:32:08would also make sense with. Doctors Hutchins like
- 1:32:14investigation and who has seen this ring?
- 1:32:17And there used to be rich people who used to live here and the
- 1:32:21orphanage like that would have made sense to me.
- 1:32:25But all you came to tell me was, oh, it was.
- 1:32:28He caught the hit on What's the. Yeah, no, it was stupid.
- 1:32:33It was stupid. I would have preferred that.
- 1:32:36He whispered in in his ear and said, hey, your dad is the real
- 1:32:41killer of all of these kids. I've never killed anybody in my
- 1:32:45life. I'm innocent.
- 1:32:47You are the son of a murderer. That would have been in five
- 1:32:51times that would have been. Way better of a gotcha.
- 1:32:55Moment in that scene where you young sucks character is just
- 1:33:00crumbles yeah his world is shaken and he.
- 1:33:05Just. Fucks off for six months to.
- 1:33:10Do penance in. This form of self flatulation,
- 1:33:13yeah, because of the sins of the father thing that a lot of K
- 1:33:17dramas like to do. Again, it's very old school.
- 1:33:19Yeah, very old school. But I would have taken that, but
- 1:33:22I would have. Taken it.
- 1:33:23I would have taken that way over.
- 1:33:25Hey, you killed this little. Boy, your dad killed this little
- 1:33:29boy, so not enough. Not enough.
- 1:33:33And it just reduced. I thought it was a character
- 1:33:36assassination. You know, all this growth and if
- 1:33:39you can call it all this growth over the course of the show of
- 1:33:43him and her getting to know each other and communicating and
- 1:33:46really expressing their wants and needs and falling deeper and
- 1:33:49deeper in love. He just like doesn't think, oh,
- 1:33:53she's going to hear about this. She's going to find out if she
- 1:33:56doesn't already. And she's not going to forgive
- 1:34:00me. She's not going to be with me,
- 1:34:02baby, She ran her motherfucking car off a Cliff for you.
- 1:34:06Of course she's going to listen to what you got to say, and
- 1:34:09she's going to. Forgive you, She's a.
- 1:34:10Rider die literally ride or die like that bitch is crazy for
- 1:34:14you. Which is so wild because she
- 1:34:16wanted a divorce and. You know, I don't know man, I
- 1:34:22got mad even in episode 11 with the.
- 1:34:25Vignette of what could have been.
- 1:34:27And it's like this whole Christmas thing.
- 1:34:30I got mad because sure. They had a.
- 1:34:33Christmas make out scene and it was sexy.
- 1:34:35It was hot. Sure, sure, sure.
- 1:34:37They were cooking steak in a toaster oven and I got offended.
- 1:34:42I was just getting mad at like any little thing in.
- 1:34:45This show. By the end of it, you just be
- 1:34:49triggered because you're triggered by.
- 1:34:51Every fucking thing. I was like.
- 1:34:52Is that a fucking steak? Are they cooking 2 steaks in the
- 1:34:56toast oven and he burned it? It could have been an air fryer.
- 1:35:00It was no air fryer. It wasn't no air fryer.
- 1:35:03I was like, did they? Just put it in there to broil
- 1:35:05it, like after cooking it in a pan.
- 1:35:07And I had all these questions about the stupid steak in this
- 1:35:11Christmas vignette. Even her nightmare just didn't
- 1:35:15make no sense either. The nightmare of the police
- 1:35:18surrounding them, the police just letting the killer shoot.
- 1:35:25Union suck. What I was like, wait, wait.
- 1:35:28Wait, what? World.
- 1:35:29Yeah, the gratuitous shot of the real pixon.
- 1:35:34They show him on television, on the news.
- 1:35:37His hand, his dead arm flops out from underneath the sheet.
- 1:35:41Never. That would never happen on
- 1:35:43television. Never happened on television.
- 1:35:46I even got mad at the mom who lost her shit, Pixon's mom,
- 1:35:52because they show her crying in prison over the flop, the arm
- 1:35:55flopping out and she's like, Oh no, my son is dead.
- 1:35:58She starts crying. I got mad at her Botox and
- 1:36:01filler face. I was like, she can't even cry.
- 1:36:07Then they go oh. She appealed to get the death.
- 1:36:11Penalty because life in prison wasn't enough for her she want
- 1:36:13to be reunited with her dead son who's literally the worst
- 1:36:17problem and I'm like yeah, do it do it I don't care I don't give
- 1:36:22a shit and. Then.
- 1:36:26The male lead disappeared, gave all his assets away to charity.
- 1:36:31I was like, why? Why?
- 1:36:34You can live in luxury. There was no corruption to be
- 1:36:38like this is dirty money, why did you?
- 1:36:41Need Why give the money? Away.
- 1:36:42I'm confused. I'm like we.
- 1:36:43Can go to Bora Bora when? You're back, Hun.
- 1:36:46Why are you giving all the money away?
- 1:36:48I was getting mad at everything. Everything.
- 1:36:50I was getting pissed at everything.
- 1:36:52I got mad at her Christmas tree. She had this dollar store
- 1:36:55Christmas tree and it just looked horrible.
- 1:36:58Horrible for a fake tree. I've seen Dillard's have better
- 1:37:01artificial trees. I was mad.
- 1:37:04I was big mad in the last two episodes because it just
- 1:37:06culminated right? Like I was already frustrated.
- 1:37:09I was already picking this shit apart.
- 1:37:11But this is just me writing down notes at this point.
- 1:37:14I was mad at the six O 4 area code.
- 1:37:17Because he was. Calling her on a new number from
- 1:37:19Oregon that was four O 6 and she was putting 22 together 4O66O
- 1:37:23four. I was like babe fuck off, fuck
- 1:37:27off. Then they come and say, oh, he
- 1:37:29was a war. Correspondent back in the day.
- 1:37:31That was a if. I looked away for a second in
- 1:37:34episode one or two and didn't see when they said offhand,
- 1:37:39yeah, he was a war correspondent.
- 1:37:41No, no, just bringing that back in the final episode.
- 1:37:45I heard so many people bitching online saying oh this was all in
- 1:37:50the book, This was how the web. Tune was written.
- 1:37:52Argon was in there. He fucked up Argon.
- 1:37:55It's all in there. I'm like babes, I don't give a
- 1:37:57fuck. I don't give a fuck.
- 1:37:59Let me tell you right now what's wrong.
- 1:38:01Is that people don't look at if you read.
- 1:38:04The book, any book that something is based on, you're
- 1:38:07going to have all the context. You're going to have everything
- 1:38:11in mind already. And to me, movie adaptation or
- 1:38:16AK drama adaptation in this case, should stand on its own.
- 1:38:19Yeah, it's a separate thing, separate entity, separate piece
- 1:38:22of art. I agree.
- 1:38:23You can't come and tell me. Oh, it's all in the literature.
- 1:38:26I'm like, babe, no, the lit that I saw is right in front of me.
- 1:38:29And it really doesn't track that.
- 1:38:32He was a spy, basically, and could survive six months in a
- 1:38:37Hut in Oregon. OK.
- 1:38:39He was wearing tailored suits the entire time we saw him, and
- 1:38:42now he's up here in tactical vests, and yeah, he looks good.
- 1:38:48He looks good. Great.
- 1:38:49I guess that's the only reason to put this in here is because
- 1:38:53he's rocking it. Yeah, but that doesn't work.
- 1:38:56Doesn't work. Doesn't compute.
- 1:38:58She gets kidnapped another time when she goes to Oregon and
- 1:39:00trying to find him. Maybe this is the one kidnapped.
- 1:39:05What is she going? What was she thinking?
- 1:39:07I oh, I was so mad at her. Even her.
- 1:39:11Outfit to go traipsing. Along in the woods, I was like,
- 1:39:14I'm mad at that. Are you wearing slacks in the
- 1:39:17jungle? I was mad all around.
- 1:39:20Yeah. He basically just exiled himself
- 1:39:23because he felt guilty for ruining her life.
- 1:39:24He didn't do shit like he's the victim.
- 1:39:27And then he comes back. Where's the therapy like I need?
- 1:39:30Therapy just as. Much as these characters, after
- 1:39:34watching all this bullshit, she was fine.
- 1:39:38She heard what he had to. Say about.
- 1:39:41His dad ordering the hit and she was like, I'm here, I'm in front
- 1:39:45of you. There's nobody to punish.
- 1:39:48You're only punishing me. Come back to me.
- 1:39:51I have this direct quote. I needed to punish myself.
- 1:39:54I needed an excuse. Oh my God, what happened to
- 1:39:58Don't let? Anyone tell you they don't want
- 1:40:01you twice or show you they don't want you twice?
- 1:40:05I don't think she got that memo. Because the way oh you left
- 1:40:10after all this shit we've been through, we're done, we're done.
- 1:40:14Yep, the only thing she didn't do was catch a grenade for.
- 1:40:17Him. She did.
- 1:40:18Everything else, yeah, it went too far.
- 1:40:22And then you get this steamy sex scene in the self.
- 1:40:25Flatulent shack in Oregon with some crazy open mouth kissing
- 1:40:30and I'm like, I skipped too little too late yeah I was so
- 1:40:34pissed off I. Just.
- 1:40:36Skipped that. Whole scene and I was super
- 1:40:39pissed. I remember being super pissed
- 1:40:41off with the background because I'm like, why does the
- 1:40:44background look like a life action cartoon that's not a real
- 1:40:50background? Like why does it look like an
- 1:40:53episode of the Survivor cartoon? Like I was, oh, I was pissed
- 1:40:58off. And then I turned it off and I
- 1:41:00was like, OK, let's go on to love Scout.
- 1:41:03Just let's move on. Because.
- 1:41:07He. I.
- 1:41:09Was shocked. That he even went so far as to
- 1:41:11say, oh, I came to Oregon because the sunsets.
- 1:41:16I love sunsets, and the sunsets reminded me there's.
- 1:41:22Sunsets everywhere. All around the.
- 1:41:24World Why you got to go to Oregon in this active war zone
- 1:41:28or whatever the fuck. Go to Guatemala, go to Fiji.
- 1:41:33Go to Canada. Go to Japan like you can go
- 1:41:36anywhere and see sunsets and make yourself feel bad.
- 1:41:40I think they just wanted to give the.
- 1:41:43Folks who have read the book Like a token.
- 1:41:48He never showed an interest in sunsets before.
- 1:41:51Well, he. Did he did.
- 1:41:55There was his phone background was a sunset and sorry I'm.
- 1:42:03Rolling my eyes. Can't see that, but I am and.
- 1:42:08I think he. It was because of.
- 1:42:10Her like he was watching her through one of like her windows
- 1:42:16or something like that. And he turns around and he takes
- 1:42:20a picture of the sunset. Something like that.
- 1:42:23He found a way to link sunsets to her.
- 1:42:27OK, you sound very skeptical. Well, I am.
- 1:42:31I am. It's the same.
- 1:42:32Thing as the the war. Correspondence and Oregon and
- 1:42:35all these things that are mentioned just once in passing.
- 1:42:39Yeah. I don't feel like the sunsets
- 1:42:40were necessarily a token that I should have held onto.
- 1:42:43So no, that's true. That's true.
- 1:42:46They wear it and the show. That much for us to feel like,
- 1:42:49oh, that's unimportant. That's the sky that he took a
- 1:42:54picture of when he saw Heju for the first, it didn't have any
- 1:42:59significance. I mean he should have just went
- 1:43:01to China where they manufacture phones.
- 1:43:04Since their relationship really started on the phone and they
- 1:43:08should have continued on the phone.
- 1:43:12Oh God, a lot of like. Just overtly.
- 1:43:15Sickeningly romantic things like he changes his name to Yuyang,
- 1:43:19meaning you and love. I thought that was silly because
- 1:43:23he would have had a name. While he lived with the fishing
- 1:43:27guy, what was his name? Then what was his name?
- 1:43:30Second couple babies get engaged.
- 1:43:33We didn't see any of their romance or courtship.
- 1:43:36They're just engaged. It's a shame the mom
- 1:43:39reconciliation that again, I don't believe for a second, I
- 1:43:43don't think it was enough. It was just not addressed that
- 1:43:46the mom was so toxic and cruel to heed you throughout the show.
- 1:43:53And then at the end she's just like, Oh my God, my baby, she's
- 1:43:56missing. And then at the end she's all of
- 1:43:59a sudden just devastated. We don't get closure with dad
- 1:44:04then 11. Final shove to push us over the
- 1:44:07Cliff. Is the controversial, what is it
- 1:44:11war-torn Ismail? Oh no.
- 1:44:14And some other country. I can't remember the other
- 1:44:16country. Which is.
- 1:44:17A conflict all too familiar to us today.
- 1:44:22It's just a stuff actively for. Israel.
- 1:44:27And the struggles in Gaza with Hamas, that really pissed me off
- 1:44:34and. Yeah, there was just no need.
- 1:44:37It was so controversial. It's such.
- 1:44:40A hot topic, and no matter where you stand on the issue, for the
- 1:44:43creators to include this was just too controversial as to be
- 1:44:50stupid. It was really unnecessary.
- 1:44:53So unnecessary. That knocked it down another.
- 1:44:57Peg for me, so I'd give. It 3/3 social models.
- 1:45:02Yeah, three social. Models.
- 1:45:04Somebody told me that the. 2nd. Female lead that actress.
- 1:45:08Was getting a lot of hate on her social media pages for
- 1:45:12delivering the lines about why blame her.
- 1:45:16I'm like why blame her? She didn't write it.
- 1:45:18Yeah, she didn't write it. That's.
- 1:45:19Ridiculous. Get smart, people.
- 1:45:22It was just too bold and stupid to have him.
- 1:45:25And then the whole thing was he was going to negotiate some
- 1:45:27hostage situation over there and presumably the Middle East.
- 1:45:32As an international audience especially, I think we're
- 1:45:34reeling. We're just like, wow, what?
- 1:45:36Yeah. I remember turning off my TV
- 1:45:39when I saw that. I was like.
- 1:45:40You just of everything, you just had to destroy it, make it go
- 1:45:47all the way to the bottom for me.
- 1:45:49Yeah, I didn't. I didn't like that.
- 1:45:51I thought it was. It really cheapened it.
- 1:45:54Yeah. And the conflict is.
- 1:45:56Not. Something you just say by the
- 1:46:00wayside and think it's OK and move on.
- 1:46:03No, you're getting me serious. But let's just say I did not
- 1:46:08appreciate it. And I was very disappointed, but
- 1:46:12not surprised. They have a way of fucking
- 1:46:15things up at the end. It was just very insensitive.
- 1:46:18Yeah, that's the. Word.
- 1:46:20They could have made-up anything.
- 1:46:23I agree they could have. North Korea is right there.
- 1:46:26Not even North Korea, if they. Wanted a fictional place they.
- 1:46:29Could have gone to that place in descendants of the sun.
- 1:46:34They could have revived that and it's it's all in the same
- 1:46:38universe. It would be a.
- 1:46:40You know, a multiverse of because the way they've set him.
- 1:46:44Up at the end it feels like he could actually be in a new show
- 1:46:49of Vagabond and it wouldn't make sense.
- 1:46:53So I just feel like they could have done just a Vagabond tie in
- 1:46:59universe. No, Yeah.
- 1:47:01And I. Saw some people saying.
- 1:47:02This felt like descendants of the sun.
- 1:47:03Ending babe Descendants of the Sun ending did it better and it
- 1:47:07actually sort of made sense because he was a soldier and
- 1:47:11then he gets captured. He's kind of like this prisoner
- 1:47:13of war thing with the second male lead of the second couple.
- 1:47:18He like by some miracle makes it back.
- 1:47:20OK, fine, I'll take it. It makes sense.
- 1:47:22Like why he would even be over there, why he would even be
- 1:47:24gone. And lest we forget, I think the
- 1:47:28final scene in Descendants of the Sun is they get an SOS call.
- 1:47:32There's an emergency. There's a volcano erupting in
- 1:47:36Canada. Don't get me started.
- 1:47:39And that's where we. Where do we end in the Senate?
- 1:47:43It's I mean, that's super out of left field, but Nah, you just
- 1:47:49reminded because I was so. Pissed off.
- 1:47:51They were like, we're in Vancouver.
- 1:47:53I think they were supposed to be in Vancouver and they showed the
- 1:47:56Seattle skyline and I got pissed off.
- 1:47:59I was like, what the hell, like. Stop it.
- 1:48:05Also we've covered. Descendants of the Sun on the
- 1:48:08Tabak feed. So if you want to go.
- 1:48:09Back you can listen to our full thoughts and hear me and Rico
- 1:48:12just go into it go into it so. That's it.
- 1:48:17Like that's. The show a pappy ending.
- 1:48:19Yeah, I love how you said I don't expect this to.
- 1:48:23Be a long episode I did. I did say that.
- 1:48:27And here we are, two hours later.
- 1:48:29But we had some shit to talk about.
- 1:48:32We did I, I think I got it all off my chest.
- 1:48:36Did you have anything? Else you wanted to add about
- 1:48:39this show, it was a ride for 20/24 and.
- 1:48:44That's it. I can't.
- 1:48:46I tried to rewatch it to talk about this and all of a sudden
- 1:48:51my brain was like absolutely not blocked What you needed from
- 1:48:57that. Time.
- 1:48:59You got. Oh, you don't need it right now.
- 1:49:02There was a season for this show and that.
- 1:49:05Season is gone. That season is gone.
- 1:49:08Yeah, you've benefited. As much as you could.
- 1:49:10From this show and now you're just going to set it down, leave
- 1:49:13by the wayside. Yeah, the last thing I'll say,
- 1:49:16and this comes from Time magazine and I was like, oh,
- 1:49:18great point that same Time magazine thing thing that said
- 1:49:21this was the mock Jiang of the year.
- 1:49:22They said it's worth noting that, like the ending of other
- 1:49:26drama Lovely Runner, when the Phone Rings falls into the
- 1:49:30Magical Cure, or throwing off the disability trope, which
- 1:49:34links a happy ending to a character no longer having a
- 1:49:37disability. Oh, it goes doubly because the
- 1:49:41sister got. Miraculously cured.
- 1:49:44And Heju also can speak barely using sign language.
- 1:49:48And then she decides at the end of the show I'm going to go back
- 1:49:51to interpreting. Yeah.
- 1:49:53And really, like, she doesn't have lasting consequences.
- 1:49:56She's not really disabled. Yeah.
- 1:49:59It's hard when, like a lot of K dramas, fall into this pitfall.
- 1:50:02Of. You know, you got somebody in a
- 1:50:05wheelchair, you got somebody who's deaf, somebody who's mute.
- 1:50:07Somebody with amnesia. Somebody with whatever they did
- 1:50:10this in Good Bad Mother as well from 2023.
- 1:50:14And that really bothered me really bothered me in that show.
- 1:50:17And it's a blight another blight on the show too, as they put it
- 1:50:22in Time magazine. This trope can reinforce the
- 1:50:25idea that disabled people are unable to live fulfilling lives
- 1:50:28without being cured of their disability.
- 1:50:31And that's just not not a good message.
- 1:50:34It's not. It keeps the marginalized on
- 1:50:38the. Fringes of society.
- 1:50:40And I don't think not. I don't think it's not a good
- 1:50:43message to send out with that. We're going to put a, put a stop
- 1:50:47on this. We're just not.
- 1:50:48We're not. Going to return to it.
- 1:50:50I, I'm sure that Carol would love to hear from you guys.
- 1:50:54Carol, where can they find you online to talk about when the
- 1:50:57phone rings? Well, with the landscape of
