- 0:00Speaker 1: Adam Kaplan joins us as promise here on a prior
- 0:03Speaker 1: edition of The Sports Bash. As Adam, it is not
- 0:06Speaker 1: just the Eagles who have been dealing with some coaching changes,
- 0:10Speaker 1: it's the entire a NFCS. I should say, how are
- 0:13Speaker 1: you doing today?
- 0:14Speaker 2: They good to talk to Josh Yetz. Really, you know
- 0:16Speaker 2: what's interesting, Every team made at least one coordinator change.
- 0:21Speaker 2: We're talking about offensive defense, not just special teams. So yeah,
- 0:23Speaker 2: there's been a ton of change in the NFC East
- 0:26Speaker 2: on coaching staff. So let's get started because I want
- 0:29Speaker 2: we want to get bring people up to date what
- 0:30Speaker 2: to expect. It's not just regurgitating. We don't do that.
- 0:34Speaker 2: We give you an insight about what's actually to expect.
- 0:36Speaker 2: So let's go to the Washington Let's go to the
- 0:38Speaker 2: commandos in David Blough. Is the OC now kind of
- 0:43Speaker 2: like the Eagles are dealing with with their situation at
- 0:46Speaker 2: offense coordinator with Sean Mannion Blow has only coached for
- 0:49Speaker 2: two years, but the difference is he's never run a
- 0:53Speaker 2: room on his own, so he's very inexperienced. He stopped
- 0:56Speaker 2: playing after the twenty three season. I see stopped playing.
- 0:58Speaker 2: He was a third string quarterback, least in a little
- 1:00Speaker 2: bit of playing time. But Blouse really smart. He's a
- 1:04Speaker 2: young guy. He's actually thirty or thirty one years old.
- 1:07Speaker 2: He's actually younger than Sean Manion. And my understanding here
- 1:12Speaker 2: was that they were, well, there are a couple of things.
- 1:15Speaker 2: So with the situation with Cliff Kingsbury, who was let go,
- 1:21Speaker 2: he and the head coach, Dan Quinn did not see
- 1:24Speaker 2: to eye on the really the direction of the offense.
- 1:28Speaker 2: They're running games surprisingly very good. That that was surprising,
- 1:32Speaker 2: but I don't get the feeling talking to a people
- 1:36Speaker 2: closest situation that Quinn was very comfortable with some of
- 1:39Speaker 2: the way that the game was called and the way
- 1:41Speaker 2: they just didn't see the game at eye on the
- 1:43Speaker 2: function of the offense. So he was let go. He's
- 1:45Speaker 2: now going to be an offensive consultant for the Rams.
- 1:48Speaker 2: And they were also concerns Josh at Blown might go
- 1:51Speaker 2: to Chicago with Ben Johnson or somewhere else. So they said,
- 1:54Speaker 2: you know what, let's promote him. We won't hire from
- 1:59Speaker 2: the outside. Let's promoted him. You got to help him
- 2:01Speaker 2: along a little bit. But David Blau is a first
- 2:04Speaker 2: time play caller and he's going to run a little
- 2:06Speaker 2: bit for what he knows about the Ben Johnson concepts
- 2:10Speaker 2: because he was with him as a player.
- 2:12Speaker 1: Really quick before we get to fight on the line,
- 2:15Speaker 1: how much did Blow being a former quarterback, maybe be
- 2:19Speaker 1: involved in this higher because we know Kingsbury also is
- 2:22Speaker 1: a former quarterback.
- 2:23Speaker 2: Yeah, Kingsbury's drafted by the Patriots. Belchick actually loved him,
- 2:26Speaker 2: by the way. In fact, he tried to get him
- 2:28Speaker 2: on a staff and a couple of times it just
- 2:30Speaker 2: didn't work out. But it's just more because he they
- 2:34Speaker 2: think he's super smart. Now, one little nugget for you,
- 2:37Speaker 2: in addition to what we just talked about, the thing
- 2:40Speaker 2: with him is going to be command. He's very young. Again,
- 2:43Speaker 2: he's very young in his coaching career, and you got
- 2:47Speaker 2: to get buy in the quarterback. Daniels will I don't
- 2:49Speaker 2: have the problem with that. It's just the other veterans
- 2:51Speaker 2: around him. Whether it's a tight end to receivers getting
- 2:54Speaker 2: buy in, but they all know being around him, he's very,
- 2:56Speaker 2: very smart. And then defensively, Giante Jones been the defensive
- 3:00Speaker 2: system for a number of years. This is the first
- 3:02Speaker 2: time he's going to call defense. So what you're probably
- 3:04Speaker 2: going to see is He said they're going to be multiple,
- 3:09Speaker 2: but that doesn't tell you anything. Every defense is multiple.
- 3:11Speaker 2: Nobody plays a thirty four every down on place of
- 3:14Speaker 2: forty three every down. They changed the front. Dan Quinn
- 3:18Speaker 2: runs a hybrid forty three front. That's what I think
- 3:21Speaker 2: you're going to get. Had they had really just the
- 3:25Speaker 2: terrible injury situation. The Commanders and Cardinals missed the most
- 3:30Speaker 2: man games on defense this season. That's a lot of
- 3:34Speaker 2: time when you're missing Both edges were out, They missed
- 3:36Speaker 2: most of the season. Their second round corner who played
- 3:41Speaker 2: really well, Trey Amis, played really well until before he
- 3:43Speaker 2: got hurt. You know, he missed most of the season.
- 3:45Speaker 2: They missed too many players in the secondary. But a
- 3:48Speaker 2: lot of them are going to be back. And look,
- 3:51Speaker 2: this is the team was what fourteen and three two
- 3:53Speaker 2: seasons ago, and they were bad last season mostly due
- 3:56Speaker 2: to injury. So they're expecting to get things going here
- 3:59Speaker 2: and there going to look completely different. It's kind of
- 4:02Speaker 2: amazing to me, Josh, when you look at the Commandos.
- 4:06Speaker 2: They shocked the world two years ago. They excuse me,
- 4:09Speaker 2: they were twelve and five and twenty four, as you know,
- 4:11Speaker 2: but they came out of the blue there they destroy
- 4:14Speaker 2: a team that nobody saw come doing what they did.
- 4:17Speaker 2: And they they had that great game where they bombed
- 4:19Speaker 2: the Lions, they got by the Bucks. Then they want
- 4:22Speaker 2: they lost, you know, against the Eagles, they got smoke
- 4:25Speaker 2: fifty five to twenty three. But they're changing things over.
- 4:29Speaker 2: But I know from talking to them, they really feeling
- 4:30Speaker 2: strongly that they've got their franchise quarterback.
- 4:33Speaker 1: So with Adam Kaplan NFL Insider, Inside the Bird Podcast,
- 4:36Speaker 1: Inside the Bird dot Com at Kaplan NFL on the
- 4:39Speaker 1: x platform, joining us here on the Sports Bass, Josh
- 4:42Speaker 1: had a Philly for Mike gil All nice seven three ESPN.
- 4:45Speaker 1: Well Adam. While the Commanders are recalibrating after a disappointing
- 4:50Speaker 1: season with injuries, the Dallas Cowboys are now hiring I
- 4:55Speaker 1: believe it's what the third different defensive coordinator in the
- 4:57Speaker 1: last four years.
- 5:00Speaker 2: Yes, so it was Mike Zimmer. Didn't work out well
- 5:03Speaker 2: for Zim running his forty three front, then Maddie reflosed.
- 5:06Speaker 2: He kept the forty three for two seasons. That was
- 5:09Speaker 2: an absolute disaster. And yeah, it's Christian Parker. Christian Parker
- 5:14Speaker 2: one of the best defensive back coaches in the National
- 5:16Speaker 2: Football League. But you know what, that sounds great, players
- 5:19Speaker 2: like them. That doesn't mean he's going to be defensive
- 5:21Speaker 2: coordinator a good one. You don't know until you get there.
- 5:24Speaker 2: That's a coaching note. That's the way coaches speak when
- 5:27Speaker 2: they evaluate other coaches. It all sounds great, but the
- 5:31Speaker 2: problem is they've been so undisciplined. They've got some bad
- 5:34Speaker 2: football character guys where not off the field. Mostly it's
- 5:39Speaker 2: guys playing hero ball, being coachable, doing things the way
- 5:43Speaker 2: you're supposed to do it. I should know if I'm
- 5:45Speaker 2: talking to the coaches have worked there. It's not easy
- 5:48Speaker 2: to coach guys in their defense. They're very talented, but
- 5:51Speaker 2: the football character thing has gotten them so far, and
- 5:53Speaker 2: that's why there as you just said, you're right, three
- 5:56Speaker 2: de coordinators in four years and Parker is the first
- 5:58Speaker 2: time play caller. Sounds great. We know he's very well respected.
- 6:02Speaker 2: But until you've done it before, you haven't done it.
- 6:04Speaker 2: But we'll see. We'll see if you get them to
- 6:06Speaker 2: play any with much more discipline on defense.
- 6:10Speaker 1: How much concern is there that we saw when Dann
- 6:13Speaker 1: and let the Eagles went to the Cardinals. Guys like
- 6:15Speaker 1: Josh Sweatt and others went within the Arizona Is there
- 6:19Speaker 1: any concern that the Eagles current crop of free agents
- 6:23Speaker 1: could follow Parker to Dallas.
- 6:24Speaker 2: Yeah. I mentioned this a week or so ago. I said, Look, guys,
- 6:27Speaker 2: don't be surprised because this happens with a lot of
- 6:30Speaker 2: offensive defensive coordinators. When they get a new job, it's
- 6:34Speaker 2: they want to bring in their guys, whether they coached
- 6:36Speaker 2: them or they were on the side of their football
- 6:38Speaker 2: that they were on. Like guys like na Kobe Dean
- 6:40Speaker 2: Reading Blankenship, super smart football players would come in and
- 6:44Speaker 2: start right away. There would be no debate. They would start.
- 6:46Speaker 2: And don't forget the Cowboys miss big Leo, Logan Wilson.
- 6:49Speaker 2: They made that trade with the Bengals and you got
- 6:53Speaker 2: oh Nakobe would be starting middle line backer. Now, the
- 6:57Speaker 2: thing with Dallas is when you look at their safety position,
- 7:02Speaker 2: they're with Malie Cooker and Jonathan Wilson's contract I think
- 7:06Speaker 2: is up. So yeah, I put that out there last
- 7:09Speaker 2: week because I just felt strongly, knowing the way coaches
- 7:12Speaker 2: think from talking to new coordinators over the years, they
- 7:15Speaker 2: always want their guys who know the system. It's very important.
- 7:18Speaker 2: It's almost like they could teach it because he's gonna
- 7:20Speaker 2: run Fangio and you know what's coming. They're gonna run us.
- 7:24Speaker 2: We shouldn't mention this. The front's gonna change. They running
- 7:28Speaker 2: forty three mostly for a number of years. It's gonna
- 7:31Speaker 2: change right now, folks. So I'm interested because the Parker
- 7:34Speaker 2: is really a good coach. Can he get buy in?
- 7:37Speaker 2: Can he get better disciplined? We'll see if they do.
- 7:40Speaker 2: They've won their chief for a number of years. It
- 7:41Speaker 2: could be a much better defense.
- 7:44Speaker 1: And then the third team in the NFC STA has
- 7:46Speaker 1: gone not just a one coordinator, this is the complete
- 7:49Speaker 1: coaching staff overhauls the New York Giants. Let's start with
- 7:53Speaker 1: the former Eagle coach John Harball. People know about his
- 7:57Speaker 1: success in Baltimore, Adam, what can we expect from Harball
- 8:02Speaker 1: with the Giants.
- 8:03Speaker 2: Yeah, so as coordinators both coached in Philly, Matt Naggi
- 8:05Speaker 2: and Denard Wilson. Matt Naggi was with Harbs here in
- 8:08Speaker 2: Philly before John become the Ravens head coach. Naggi's gonna
- 8:13Speaker 2: run more of a spread scheme that when he took
- 8:16Speaker 2: what he learned from Andy Reid and kind of changed
- 8:18Speaker 2: him things up, and he also does well with quarterbacks
- 8:22Speaker 2: in terms of he will coach Hardt. Patrick Mahomes's best
- 8:28Speaker 2: season as a professional was in twenty twenty two, and
- 8:31Speaker 2: Naggie was his quarterbacks coach. Naggie was incredible year one
- 8:34Speaker 2: with the Bears. Year two is okay. The last two
- 8:39Speaker 2: years were not good for Naggie. Let's call it like
- 8:40Speaker 2: it is. I don't know Matt, but my job is
- 8:42Speaker 2: call it down the middle. He didn't do well. Now
- 8:45Speaker 2: he also coached mich Trubisky. That's hard. No, it's been
- 8:49Speaker 2: able to really get to him. They didn't make the
- 8:50Speaker 2: playoffs once with Mitch. But but to run I spread
- 8:55Speaker 2: more of a spread offense where three receivers going. We're
- 8:58Speaker 2: eleven personnel. You've got to have the personnel. You've got
- 9:00Speaker 2: to have the receivers. Milik neighbors Josh, we know he's
- 9:03Speaker 2: come back with town acl he's great. Gary Slaton can
- 9:05Speaker 2: flat out run wan No Robinson the slot receiver, his
- 9:08Speaker 2: contracts up. They don't have any depth at all, so
- 9:11Speaker 2: they've got a lot of work to do. The Giants
- 9:13Speaker 2: do a Joe Shane, the gentleal manager does and John
- 9:15Speaker 2: Hallboy has a lot of control with he's he'll be
- 9:18Speaker 2: more involved with the personnel side than he has before.
- 9:21Speaker 2: Offensive lines had major problems really for a number of years.
- 9:25Speaker 2: Their defense, their front is fantastic for Jernard Wilson. Jernard
- 9:28Speaker 2: Wilson Josh didn't really get a fair shake in Tennessee
- 9:31Speaker 2: because they had two or three good players. The rest
- 9:34Speaker 2: of the defense is horrendous. They don't the red rush
- 9:36Speaker 2: as a joke. So you go to the Giants, where
- 9:38Speaker 2: they've got a great ass rush group. We know that
- 9:42Speaker 2: with Brian Burns's terrific, but Duill Carter came on late.
- 9:45Speaker 2: Thibodeau finally he's on his fifth year option. Truny Golson's
- 9:49Speaker 2: a good player, so they're loaded there. They're really good
- 9:51Speaker 2: at linebacker. They got some problems at corner, they're good
- 9:54Speaker 2: at safety. The defense has a chance to be outstanding
- 9:57Speaker 2: with a little bit of help, and we know about
- 10:00Speaker 2: DeMarcus Lawrence. The issue now is their offensive line, like
- 10:04Speaker 2: it always is, can they protect and uh talking to
- 10:07Speaker 2: scam someone's close to camp Scotta bow he should be good.
- 10:11Speaker 2: He should He should be able to work after the
- 10:13Speaker 2: draft a little bit and then obviously be ready for
- 10:15Speaker 2: training camp, but that was a major injury suffered and
- 10:17Speaker 2: you saw how the running game suffered after he got hurt.
- 10:20Speaker 1: I think the big interesting thing also with these hire
- 10:23Speaker 1: Adam is that you're getting a guy at Horriball that's
- 10:26Speaker 1: got a lot of cashe he's got a lot of
- 10:29Speaker 1: experience as a head coach. You're the past two guys
- 10:32Speaker 1: Dable back before that you have McAdoo, right, Joe Judge,
- 10:36Speaker 1: these were guys you didn't have a lot of egg
- 10:38Speaker 1: coaching experience. Is kind of I want to say it's
- 10:40Speaker 1: the same, but does have a little vibe of when
- 10:42Speaker 1: they hired Tom Coughlin years ago.
- 10:45Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean it's different. I mean, Maggie's got experience.
- 10:49Speaker 2: Brian Callahan as their quarterbacks coach. Chathall, I'm told the
- 10:51Speaker 2: receiver cool Beaver receivers coach. He would have been the
- 10:54Speaker 2: quarterbacks coach had they not hired Callahan. And Paul Chathall
- 10:59Speaker 2: was their assistant quarterbacks coach last year. Chat Hall a
- 11:02Speaker 2: top three receivers coach. So that's a really good staff
- 11:05Speaker 2: that Now, look, we got to see what happens in
- 11:08Speaker 2: free agency in the draft for that football team, but
- 11:11Speaker 2: they could be one of those breakout teams. They severely
- 11:14Speaker 2: unachieved last season. It's funny I got lucky on that
- 11:18Speaker 2: over under was six and a half. I like the under.
- 11:20Speaker 2: I mean, how many games did they choke last season?
- 11:22Speaker 2: They should have had nine or ten wins. It's embarrassing.
- 11:24Speaker 2: How bad, really bad, like really bad, how many chokes
- 11:27Speaker 2: they had? So with Harve's in there, you know what's coming.
- 11:30Speaker 2: Greg Roman from Atlantic City. He's arguably the NFL's best
- 11:34Speaker 2: run game designer. He's a senior offensive system but he's
- 11:38Speaker 2: gonna help them with their run game. They got a chance, folks,
- 11:41Speaker 2: I know there are a lot of Giant fans listening.
- 11:43Speaker 2: They've got a chance to make a major jump this season.
- 11:46Speaker 1: They absolutely do, and honestly, I wouldn't mind it, just
- 11:48Speaker 1: because I think the NFC is a little better in
- 11:51Speaker 1: the Giants in the Eagles matchup is good?
- 11:53Speaker 2: Right? Yeah? I actually said that the Jeff after the
- 11:56Speaker 2: season was over. I was like, you know what, you
- 11:58Speaker 2: guys finally broke that twenty year mold twenty one years
- 12:00Speaker 2: since they had a repeat winner, and the Eagles were
- 12:03Speaker 2: that repeat winner. But man, the Commanders were terrible. The
- 12:08Speaker 2: Giants were choke ours. You know, the cowboys do what
- 12:10Speaker 2: they do. They're just Jason Van would say, cowboys are
- 12:13Speaker 2: going to a cowboy. They do, that's what they do.
- 12:14Speaker 2: They have no discipline, and we'll see what happens. But
- 12:19Speaker 2: it would be nice. It would be nice because you
- 12:23Speaker 2: saw what the Bears did. The Bears finally, Josh, you know,
- 12:26Speaker 2: they finally showed something. It would be nice if there
- 12:30Speaker 2: was a division where like every team's over five hundred
- 12:34Speaker 2: or close to it. Now when you look at it,
- 12:37Speaker 2: the only one, the NFC North North was the only
- 12:40Speaker 2: division where every team was at least over five hundred.
- 12:44Speaker 2: Bears Packers both made it. Minnesota was nine eight, Detroit
- 12:47Speaker 2: was nine and eight. The reason why they're only ninet
- 12:49Speaker 2: is because they had major injury problems. So yeah, it
- 12:52Speaker 2: would be great, man, I mean, it would be nice
- 12:54Speaker 2: that they would have put way more juice when we
- 12:56Speaker 2: would talk about these teams each week.
- 12:58Speaker 1: At Capolin, NFL on the X platform inside the Bird podcast,
- 13:02Speaker 1: Like subscribe to Della wherever you get your podcast, or

- 13:08Speaker 1: Adam enjoy the weekend.
- 13:10Speaker 2: Sounds good. Assume you
