- 0:00Speaker 1: Chris Dally has joined us for the daily recap after
- 0:02Speaker 1: the Huskies went Overseat in the Hall today. Boy, it
- 0:04Speaker 1: was fun to watch that offensive efficiency, particularly in the
- 0:08Speaker 1: first three quarters when everything just seemed to be in
- 0:10Speaker 1: a really good flow.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Today, well, you know, when we move, and we moved
- 0:13Speaker 2: the basketball were much more difficult to defend in our offense.
- 0:17Speaker 2: The last couple of games, we've been a little more stagnant.
- 0:19Speaker 2: So that was one of the focuses in practice the
- 0:22Speaker 2: last couple of days and then certainly today, to get
- 0:25Speaker 2: more people movement, more ball movement, and I think, you know,
- 0:28Speaker 2: we found ourselves open and made a lot of open shots.
- 0:31Speaker 2: The threes, you know, obviously we shot sal are the
- 0:33Speaker 2: only shots she missed in the first half of the
- 0:35Speaker 2: layup and she doesn't usually miss that, and it was
- 0:37Speaker 2: a tough catch. But just overall, everybody played really well.
- 0:41Speaker 1: From your standpoint, was it a point of emphasis to
- 0:43Speaker 1: get to Sarah the ball earlier or is that just
- 0:45Speaker 1: the way things flowed in the offense.
- 0:46Speaker 2: Now that was the way I mean we Obviously you
- 0:49Speaker 2: want to get your best players the most shots and
- 0:52Speaker 2: to get them started early, but that it was more
- 0:54Speaker 2: out of the movement, and we had a lot of
- 0:58Speaker 2: great ball movement. We made a lot of extra pasth says,
- 1:00Speaker 2: you know, we're doing a much better job of getting
- 1:02Speaker 2: into the gaps and then kicking, and then we have to,
- 1:05Speaker 2: you know, get a little bit better at our decision making.
- 1:07Speaker 2: Sometimes when you get so deep into lane, you can't
- 1:10Speaker 2: pass it, so you have to shoot it. And sometimes
- 1:12Speaker 2: we look to shoot it, I mean to pass it
- 1:15Speaker 2: too much. So the way it works is you have
- 1:18Speaker 2: to look like you want to score and that you're
- 1:19Speaker 2: going to score, and then the pass happens. If you
- 1:21Speaker 2: go in in trying to pass the ball, everybody knows that,
- 1:25Speaker 2: including the other team, so you have to really go
- 1:28Speaker 2: in thinking score. Pass has happened from there.
- 1:31Speaker 3: So little tidbit for you give us the insight to
- 1:36Speaker 3: the defenses after and it seemed the game or the
- 1:40Speaker 3: scout may have been to really as you usually do,
- 1:43Speaker 3: make things tough for their leading score Faith and Sonia
- 1:45Speaker 3: sm She had a tough time, a lot of turnovers,
- 1:48Speaker 3: but by committee it seemed to be knowing where she
- 1:51Speaker 3: was at all times and make things difficult.
- 1:52Speaker 2: For well going in. I think we're most concerned with Faith,
- 1:54Speaker 2: who is their leading scorer and Jada e is a
- 1:56Speaker 2: little freshman point guard number zero who's really good. She's
- 1:59Speaker 2: had a a great freshman year so far. And our
- 2:03Speaker 2: focus was on those two, was on those two players
- 2:05Speaker 2: and to limit the things Faith. You know, if she's
- 2:08Speaker 2: not scoring, she's generally doing something that's getting them open shots.
- 2:12Speaker 2: And I thought we did a really good job limiting
- 2:14Speaker 2: her her good looks and then staying home and not
- 2:17Speaker 2: allowing her to find the open player. And with jdas
- 2:21Speaker 2: I thought we did, she got the you know, she
- 2:23Speaker 2: ended up with fourteen. She's averaging twenty I think in
- 2:25Speaker 2: the league. But she got those when the game was over,
- 2:28Speaker 2: she did not get them. I thought Page started out
- 2:30Speaker 2: on her, and then you know, by committee, I think
- 2:33Speaker 2: Caitlin Garter a little bit, KK did because we were
- 2:36Speaker 2: switching some so we made it difficult on their two
- 2:39Speaker 2: best players. And if you do that then you have
- 2:41Speaker 2: a chance, and you're making the shots the way we
- 2:43Speaker 2: did and running our offense, then you're in pretty good shape.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Paige defender Gino. I asked Gino about this early in
- 2:49Speaker 1: the year, and you.
- 2:50Speaker 2: Put those two words together, I know, Paige.
- 2:52Speaker 1: And defendence, but he did say that she's a better
- 2:56Speaker 1: off ball defender as opposed to being an on ball defender.
- 2:58Speaker 1: But that's the next thing she has to take step
- 3:01Speaker 1: to get, you know, to really be good at the
- 3:02Speaker 1: next level. Have you seen improvement in that.
- 3:04Speaker 2: In some you know, I think she she does a
- 3:07Speaker 2: pretty good job. She tries to use her length, and
- 3:09Speaker 2: that was one of the reasons she started out on
- 3:12Speaker 2: Aids because we thought her length would would give her
- 3:15Speaker 2: would give the point guard a little bit of trouble.
- 3:18Speaker 2: But you know, you have to you have to determine
- 3:22Speaker 2: is it do you want to do that and have
- 3:24Speaker 2: because the Aids runs around a lot and has the
- 3:26Speaker 2: ball a lot and wear page out on the defensive
- 3:30Speaker 2: end like that, or do we want her more ready
- 3:32Speaker 2: for the offensive end. So you have to try to
- 3:34Speaker 2: balance that and give her an opportunity because she likes
- 3:37Speaker 2: the challenge of trying to have to defend players. And
- 3:40Speaker 2: you know, she's not as much like Niko was, like,
- 3:44Speaker 2: let me guard her. She's not scoring, and Nica wouldn't switch.
- 3:46Speaker 2: And Nico wouldn't do anything if she had the best player,
- 3:48Speaker 2: she wouldn't even if we said switch. She's not switching
- 3:50Speaker 2: because she doesn't want the kid to score. But so
- 3:54Speaker 2: in that way, you know, I think she has improved,
- 3:56Speaker 2: but she is a much better defender off the ball.
- 4:00Speaker 3: Can you speak to Sarah Strong how she is because
- 4:02Speaker 3: she's I mean, for a freshman, she seems to be
- 4:04Speaker 3: able to get in passing or have instinct anyway to
- 4:07Speaker 3: pick off she has.
- 4:08Speaker 2: You know, I keep saying this every every time I'm interviewed.
- 4:11Speaker 2: She's got great hands and great feet, and you know,
- 4:13Speaker 2: her feet, her footwork allows her to go against you know,
- 4:17Speaker 2: quicker players who she has quick hands, so she gets
- 4:20Speaker 2: some deflections and some of the steals she gets you
- 4:23Speaker 2: don't even think that she's going to get them. And
- 4:26Speaker 2: then she also is able to rebound outside her area
- 4:28Speaker 2: and is great because of her hand, she can go
- 4:30Speaker 2: up and secure the ball. So you know, it starts
- 4:33Speaker 2: with that. And she's a soccer player when she was
- 4:35Speaker 2: grown up, which also helps with that experience. But it
- 4:39Speaker 2: might also explain her pace sometimes because she kind of
- 4:42Speaker 2: goes with the flow and that's what they do in soccer,
- 4:45Speaker 2: right at least that's what it looks like to me. Yeah,
- 4:47Speaker 2: but you know, she's she's just she's gifted. She has
- 4:51Speaker 2: a good sense and she's an unselfish player. She's totally unselfish,
- 4:55Speaker 2: and most of the time she's looking to pass her
- 4:58Speaker 2: when she probably should be shooting. You know, she's Page
- 5:00Speaker 2: must have taught her that before she came.
- 5:02Speaker 3: You can see that. And sometimes when she even how
- 5:05Speaker 3: she picks off the steel and it was almost like, sorry,
- 5:08Speaker 3: I'm going to make this lay up. You should I
- 5:10Speaker 3: give it to you, right, You see that A couple.
- 5:12Speaker 2: While, hopefully we're going to be able to get that change,
- 5:13Speaker 2: because I you know, she's got the she could score forty.
- 5:17Speaker 2: I think at any point. Yeah, you know, I think.
- 5:20Speaker 2: I don't know that she wants to. I don't know
- 5:22Speaker 2: that she thinks that way, but you know she's gonna
- 5:26Speaker 2: need to, you know. I think that's the next you
- 5:28Speaker 2: talk about growth in somebody's game, not that you have
- 5:31Speaker 2: to shoot the ball every time you touch it, but
- 5:34Speaker 2: you have to work and know that you can and
- 5:38Speaker 2: then take advantage of those opportunities and not pass them
- 5:41Speaker 2: up because a lot of times like this happens with Paige.
- 5:43Speaker 2: When you pass it up, you put us in a
- 5:45Speaker 2: bad spot. You put your teammates in a bad spot.
- 5:47Speaker 2: Like there was a Page took a pull up, or
- 5:50Speaker 2: she took two dribbles and instead of one dribble, and
- 5:52Speaker 2: she took away her own shop by taking the second dribble,
- 5:55Speaker 2: and so you know, that kind of stuff you have
- 5:57Speaker 2: to learn.
- 5:59Speaker 1: We're night team games. In the consistency that Sarah has had.
- 6:03Speaker 1: I know, she's the number one recruit coming out of
- 6:05Speaker 1: high school. But when you've been able to be stay
- 6:07Speaker 1: that consistent for that long so far, knock on wood,
- 6:10Speaker 1: you're doing something special.
- 6:12Speaker 2: You know, she has a in Both her parents played
- 6:15Speaker 2: and are involved in coaching, and at some level she's
- 6:20Speaker 2: been around the game and she really knows basketball. Like
- 6:23Speaker 2: the questions she asks are real basketball questions and wanting
- 6:29Speaker 2: to know whether you know, should I do this or this?
- 6:31Speaker 2: Like it's just different for a freshman. She's very knowledgeable
- 6:34Speaker 2: about the game and her instincts are really good. So
- 6:38Speaker 2: you know, it's it's only going to get better from here.
- 6:41Speaker 2: And she's already pretty good.
- 6:43Speaker 1: Yeah, I know.
- 6:43Speaker 3: That's what's amazing too, right in that sense, as far
- 6:46Speaker 3: as knowing now that school's going to be, the semester's
- 6:48Speaker 3: going to be getting and everything. I'm happy with how
- 6:51Speaker 3: players are nice that you know, Okay, we just have
- 6:53Speaker 3: to worry about basketball at the same time, we just
- 6:55Speaker 3: have to worry about basketball. Yeah, and then going to
- 6:57Speaker 3: that next Is that any operation or is it a
- 7:01Speaker 3: good thing they're getting back into.
- 7:02Speaker 2: The No, I think they. I think they actually like
- 7:06Speaker 2: the change and having a different routine. When you're an
- 7:09Speaker 2: over break, I have no idea what data is because
- 7:11Speaker 2: every day practice is the same. It's it's just just weird.
- 7:15Speaker 2: So once you get into the school year, you have
- 7:18Speaker 2: a different sense because the kids are back in class
- 7:20Speaker 2: and classes get out here and it changes things. And
- 7:24Speaker 2: I think it's a good thing.
- 7:25Speaker 1: You know.
- 7:25Speaker 2: I think the break is good, but I also think
- 7:27Speaker 2: getting back into routine is good.
- 7:28Speaker 3: And how about the crowd.
- 7:30Speaker 2: The crowd is amazing.
- 7:31Speaker 1: This felt like that a Paul game last year where
- 7:33Speaker 1: we hadn't played here in a while and we smoked
- 7:35Speaker 1: the Blue Demons. It felt that same way today.
- 7:37Speaker 2: Yeah, And to have so many people show up with
- 7:39Speaker 2: the uncertainty of the weather just to speaks volumes for our fans.
- 7:44Speaker 2: And you know when they talk about the basketball capital
- 7:46Speaker 2: of the world having the sellout, yes, Draight for the
- 7:47Speaker 2: men in our sellout today. And I mean it's different
- 7:51Speaker 2: here and we know that we had. You know, you
- 7:54Speaker 2: have people visit from other parts of the country and
- 7:57Speaker 2: they get to experience the firsthand. So it's I thank
- 8:00Speaker 2: all the fans for coming. Hopefully they're driving home safely
- 8:03Speaker 2: and they'll be back out. We're here again on Wednesday,
- 8:06Speaker 2: which you know, you know, hopefully all the hopefully all
- 8:10Speaker 2: the okay, thanks, Hopefully all the students will come back
- 8:14Speaker 2: and be ready to be loud on Wednesday against Villanova.
- 8:17Speaker 1: All right, we'll see you then, all right, Thanks Chris,
