Speaker 1: Welcome to another In Wheel Time podcast From the Good Grub and Gears Car Show and Fall Festival in Stevenson Park in Friendswood, Texas.
• 0:14
Speaker 1: It's the In Wheel Time Car Talk Show presented by the Space City Corvette Club and sponsored by Emmons Autoflex in Webster.
• 0:22
  Speaker 1: Thank you Ahead.
• 0:23
Speaker 1: We've got another guest here in the in-wheel time remote studio.
• 0:27
Speaker 1: Keep calling it booth, it's not, it's a studio, Don't you think, with all the wires and all the crap that we've got sitting around, you'd think that we're going to go to Mars.
• 0:36
Speaker 2: Hey, hey, hey, hey, get it Mars.
• 0:38
Speaker 2: We're going to go to Mars for the next one, I'm with you.
• 0:40
Speaker 2: Take us away, Michael.
• 0:42
Speaker 1: No, so at any rate, we have a guest.
• 0:45
Speaker 1: Mr Mars is going to introduce him.
• 0:47
Speaker 4: Yeah, joining us now is Mr Scott Gordon.
• 0:49
Speaker 4: Yes, sir, he's got a place sitting back over here with a Cole Gordon, the helping hand, right.
• 0:57
  Speaker 5: Yes, sir.
• 0:58
Speaker 4: Yeah, AJ mentioned that earlier, so could you kind of tell us what that is?
• 1:02
  Speaker 4: Cole?
• 1:04
Speaker 5: yeah, explain this gordon right, it is foundation that was founded roughly five years ago last two weeks ago and it was in honor of my son, who was killed in a car wreck sorry thank you, uh, cole was, I cannot imagine something more horrible than that, as we've said many times is most people never get to see what their kids accomplish.
• 1:25
Speaker 5: When we've seen the love and reward, people never get to see what their kids accomplish.
• 1:27
Speaker 5: When we've seen the love and reward and people's respect and the things that people have done in honor of Cole, you get a feeling of what your kid actually did.
• 1:34
Speaker 5: Most of us hope that you never get to see it.
• 1:36
Speaker 5: Believe me, I hope nobody has to, but inevitably sometimes it does happen.
• 1:41
Speaker 5: He had an accident hauling animals for four H and FFA children bringing back from Northwest Texas and they say lost control.
• 1:52
Speaker 5: I say fell asleep about 5 o'clock in the morning in Navasota.
• 1:57
Speaker 5: Houston News covered it to the nth degree.
• 1:59
Speaker 5: Friends would be in the community that you see here today.
• 2:03
Speaker 5: It would be another kid in a big city, but he was a big kid in a little city and uh, it was.
• 2:09
Speaker 5: It was blessing and it was very uh.
• 2:11
Speaker 5: It helped us get through it and then we founded a nonprofit.
• 2:15
Speaker 5: Uh, because we believe kids need the four H, we need the FFA back in back in these kids and the biggest thing I've wanted or saw is kids with a lack of self-confidence, and people always and it's human nature to walk and tell you what you can't do, you know if you walk up to somebody.
• 2:32
  Speaker 5: I can't run that computer, I can't do a show.
• 2:35
Speaker 5: Tell them what you can do.
• 2:36
Speaker 5: We'll work on what you can't.
• 2:37
Speaker 5: And that's what kids don't get generally is they feel like you know, I can't do that, I shouldn't go, I shouldn't go talk to those guys, they don't want me and you know, if you think about it, everyone's on their phones and they're all on their computers.
• 2:49
Speaker 5: Well, that's true, and they're not.
• 2:50
Speaker 1: Although I can't relate to that.
• 2:52
Speaker 1: I've got daughters and they're on their phones a lot, but not like some I see.
• 2:57
Speaker 5: And FFA and 4-H are great responsibility builders and character of children and young adults.
• 3:05
Speaker 5: I should call them.
• 3:05
Speaker 5: We've got a half a dozen going in this weekend.
• 3:08
Speaker 5: Brazoria County Fair kicks off today, so we've got animals.
• 3:11
Speaker 1: We weren't invited, but we'll go Come on, let's go.
• 3:22
Speaker 5: Don't threaten me with a good time.
• 3:23
Speaker 5: There is the shows and the majors and the Houston Livestock Show where the kids get to go and walk on green shavings and it's a big, big deal.
• 3:26
Speaker 5: And you've got homeschooled kids that never don't have a barn and they don't have or take field trips to a barn and they don't have sports places, they don't have all that and there's a big niche of kids that don't.
• 3:38
Speaker 5: The parents don't put them in public schools.
• 3:40
Speaker 5: I was talking to one of our Texas officials, or now United States official, and it's north of a third of all kids don't go to public schools and that's across the United States or just Texas.
• 3:53
Speaker 5: I think it's Texas and you can see it when they have shootings and things in those schools that you kind of get it to be well, maybe not quite yet understood, yeah so we have a lot of homeschool kids that wouldn't have the opportunity to make other friends.
• 4:07
Speaker 1: So do they FFA and 4-H?
• 4:10
Speaker 1: Do they allow kids that are homeschooled into their organization?
• 4:15
Speaker 5: FFA is tied to your high schools and school systems.
• 4:17
Speaker 5: So if they're not in the schools, no, now 4-H, you can do anything you want.
• 4:22
Speaker 5: So we have the helping hand 4-H that we founded, so kids can I don't understand.
• 4:26
Speaker 1: Okay, so it's tied to a high school.
• 4:28
Speaker 2: What if you don't go to a high school, the revenue that a school makes Well, and the teachers and the facilities.
• 4:34
Speaker 4: But you know, I have a cousin.
• 4:35
Speaker 4: She homeschooled all ten of her kids literally Ten.
• 4:39
  Speaker 4: Ten.
• 4:39
Speaker 4: She had two sets of twins.
• 4:41
Speaker 4: So you know it wasn't the plan but she homeschooled them.
• 4:45
Speaker 4: She's had four of them who have already graduated college.
• 4:49
Speaker 4: You know a couple of them went to the seminary but she found football and sports, baseball, that it's a homeschooled child.
• 4:58
Speaker 4: They could go participate and she made sure that they did all that they could.
• 5:03
Speaker 4: So it's very important what you're doing.
• 5:06
Speaker 5: We were blessed with income.
• 5:10
Speaker 5: We had lots of people help donate to it in the beginning.
• 5:13
Speaker 5: As soon as Cole passed, del Papa Distributing is a big one, carbock Beer in Houston they actually made Cole his own beer.
• 5:20
Speaker 5: It's Love Street Light in the store, but it will have cole's logo on it eventually, and you know things that by the way, just to interject, yes, I did go to the love street light circus and feel good machine.
• 5:33
Speaker 1: It was an actual place in houston, texas did you know that it's over by uh?
• 5:37
Speaker 1: It's downtown yeah, yeah, okay, he's got a tattoo, oh boy yeah, you don't want to know where it is, though, anyway, go ahead.
• 5:44
Speaker 5: So we bought, uh, we had someone step up and help me as a silent partner, a business partner, whatever, and we bought 13 acres in alvin, just out of the friendswood line.
• 5:54
Speaker 5: Over here we built a 18 000 20 000 square foot barn and it was full.
• 6:00
  Speaker 5: I mean within.
• 6:01
Speaker 5: We're only five years old.
• 6:02
Speaker 5: We did that three years ago.
• 6:04
Speaker 5: We outgrew it in 18 months.
• 6:06
Speaker 5: That many kids needed a place to do From sixth, seventh, eighth grade.
• 6:11
Speaker 5: You know high school, you can do what you want, but those juniors, don't get in it.
• 6:16
Speaker 5: And once they get to high school they got cars and they're working on their go-fast cars and all the mechanics and all the things they want to do.
• 6:23
Speaker 5: And then you get football and sports and band and boyfriends and girlfriends.
• 6:26
  Speaker 5: They're gone, yeah.
• 6:28
Speaker 4: They're not going to get into it.
• 6:29
Speaker 4: So when they're younger you get a better chance to at least teach them something and it's a little bit easier for them to learn the responsibility and things because they're not quite so distracted, they're a little more focused.
• 6:41
Speaker 4: They can learn better.
• 6:42
Speaker 5: And we want the parents around you know the more the parents help them.
• 6:45
Speaker 5: We say it's on the kid, but it's not families feeding animals, but it is the kid and the parents.
• 6:50
Speaker 5: Hey, let's go to this show.
• 6:51
Speaker 5: Hey, I want to go watch this person.
• 6:53
Speaker 5: He's really good and they find something that they like in it and it sticks with them and you know, just like football sticks with people, but how many people play football out of all the kids that go through high school?
• 7:03
  Speaker 5: What a tenth of 1%.
• 7:05
  Speaker 5: Maybe, and animals.
• 7:07
Speaker 5: Everybody has a chance to do it.
• 7:09
Speaker 5: You do it in college.
• 7:10
Speaker 5: They have show teams and professional drivers that take them around.
• 7:13
Speaker 1: I watch more reels with animals in it than anything else.
• 7:17
  Speaker 1: Yeah, makes sense.
• 7:18
Speaker 1: I mean I do On my Facebook feed.
• 7:21
  Speaker 1: That's what I watch.
• 7:21
Speaker 5: You've got animals, you've got it on your funniest bloopers yeah On.
• 7:25
Speaker 5: Tv Everyone wants to see the video with the cats and the dogs and the animals.
• 7:28
Speaker 5: And these kids work really hard.
• 7:31
Speaker 5: They're there every morning, every night, a couple hours.
• 7:33
Speaker 5: Every session that they're there they have to raise their own animal.
• 7:36
Speaker 5: They have to pay for it.
• 7:38
Speaker 4: Yeah, that's where you develop that work ethic that they can use the rest of their life, correct?
• 7:43
Speaker 5: And so we built that barn.
• 7:44
Speaker 5: And then we were blessed from Leeward Energy, a solar company that came in and through the Brazoria County Commissioner's Court donated enough money to build another 18,000-square-foot building Jeez.
• 7:56
Speaker 5: And then we've had remarkable donors.
• 7:59
Speaker 5: Being a nonprofit, one company donated the entire electrical install Davidson Electric, wholesale Electric donated every light bulb, wire, nut, conduit, everything non-profit.
• 8:03
Speaker 5: One company donated the entire electrical install davidson electric, uh, wholesale electric donated every light bulb, wire, nut, conduit, everything.
• 8:09
Speaker 5: Every in 18 wheelers showed up with stuff.
• 8:12
Speaker 1: That car right there has got some wire nuts in it, mainly behind the wheel yeah yeah, including the one behind the loose nut.
• 8:21
Speaker 5: I want to know about this.
• 8:22
  Speaker 5: Oh, oh boy.
• 8:22
Speaker 5: Well, we're blessed that we knew Tracy Bird.
• 8:27
Speaker 5: Cole was actually pretty good friends with him.
• 8:29
Speaker 5: He could knock on his door at his motorhome and he'd let him in.
• 8:31
Speaker 5: And he called and asked us hey, I've got a couple dates.
• 8:34
Speaker 5: I promised you I'd do one, and this is Cole's five-year anniversary.
• 8:37
Speaker 5: And he said Tracy Bird said I'll come play a concert for you and we'll do a full show, you and we'll do a full show, and we'll do the whole bit.
• 8:46
Speaker 5: And and then we called the flight museum over in webster, the lone star flight museum and fabulous they made they made a little uh deal with us.
• 8:51
Speaker 5: If we would help them through our cooking part of the organization, they would donate the entire facility so we go do a little, it's like you know, you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours right?
• 9:00
Speaker 5: We know about that, that's the old handshake deals and you don't have to have your firstborn.
• 9:07
Speaker 4: Yeah, all your financials.
• 9:08
Speaker 5: Yeah, exactly, and so we're going to play a concert January 18th.
• 9:12
  Speaker 5: He's coming in.
• 9:14
Speaker 5: We're going to have a big live auction, silent auction, open bar, sit-down meal.
• 9:18
Speaker 5: What day is a week?
• 9:22
  Speaker 5: Saturday night.
• 9:22
  Speaker 1: It's a Saturday night.
• 9:24
  Speaker 5: It'll be a fun deal.
• 9:25
Speaker 5: I'm going to get with the Corvette guys and see if they want to bring their cars out and put them in the building with us too that would be nice.
• 9:32
Speaker 1: We'd be more than happy to let you see, the in-wheel time machine.
• 9:35
Speaker 5: Yeah, let's do it.
• 9:36
Speaker 5: Okay, I think it'd be fun.
• 9:39
Speaker 1: So how do you get tickets to the event and find out more information.
• 9:42
Speaker 5: Cole's wwwcolegordonfoundationcom, and the Facebook is Cole Gordon Help at Hand, and my phone number is on everything, so it's 713-823-5989.
• 9:57
Speaker 5: There's several different ways to get us.
• 9:59
Speaker 5: If you pull up Help at Hand on Google, it'll bring you to the Help at Hand Ranch.
• 10:04
Speaker 2: So are you over here in a booth or just your car?
• 10:07
Speaker 5: No, we have a.
• 10:08
Speaker 5: On the other side of the ag there's more to 4-H and FFA.
• 10:12
Speaker 2: There's actually a culinary side to it, so they can, folks can actually donate to that to get a shirt or a hat or merches over there.
• 10:19
  Speaker 5: Merch.
• 10:19
Speaker 5: And yeah, there's a full culinary side and all kinds of things for the kids, so we have a full class where they can come get their ServSafe in our commercial kitchen.
• 10:29
Speaker 5: Really, we have a full commercial kitchen, basically donated most of it by Bucky's.
• 10:33
Speaker 5: Beaver from Bucky's stepped in and helped us quite a bit.
• 10:37
Speaker 5: He's a big supporter and believer in helping kids.
• 10:40
Speaker 5: You know he built that multi-million dollar facility at Texas A&M so he believes in helping the next generation, which we all should.
• 10:49
Speaker 4: Sure yeah, we do, we do.
• 10:53
  Speaker 1: We do.
• 10:53
Speaker 1: Matter of fact, we've got a big car show next weekend out at Spring Branch those kids that are in the automotive program out there and they're going to put on a big car show and they've invited us to come out there.
• 11:08
Speaker 1: So we get it.
• 11:10
Speaker 5: I'm going to do one, like you would do for everybody on the auto side.
• 11:16
Speaker 5: We're getting ready to start.
• 11:18
Speaker 5: When I find a donor to help us with a building, I want to put a 1,600, 1,800-square-foot building up.
• 11:24
Speaker 1: Ag Mechanics and get kids using their hands, and I know that you're a part of the rodeo and you know that they've got a whole Ag Mechanic competition Correct, and, if anybody, I was out there for 20 years and I thoroughly enjoyed my time out there.
• 11:39
Speaker 5: Were you on that committee.
• 11:41
Speaker 1: No, I was not.
• 11:42
Speaker 5: Gus Smith was the one that helped run that the ag mechanics.
• 11:46
Speaker 1: He was a good friend, I'll tell you to see those kids and do that ag mechanic thing you're going to go.
• 11:50
  Speaker 4: What is ag?
• 11:50
  Speaker 4: I'm envisioning tractors.
• 11:53
  Speaker 5: Well, there's that.
• 11:54
  Speaker 5: There's that.
• 11:54
  Speaker 5: They teach welding.
• 11:56
Speaker 5: They teach how to put in trailer lights.
• 11:58
Speaker 5: They might build a trailer hay hauler.
• 12:01
Speaker 5: They might build something to haul a piece of a tractor.
• 12:04
Speaker 4: Farm and ranch Farm and ranch ag Repair of equipment.
• 12:07
Speaker 5: So anything that like ranch hand is maybe a better word, but it's ag mechanics.
• 12:11
Speaker 5: I know some places I don't know if Houston still does it, but they would take, like our friends at Kubota that help us on our place from Lansdowne Moody, they would sabotage a tractor and make somebody go fix it.
• 12:25
Speaker 5: Yeah, figure out what's wrong with it.
• 12:26
Speaker 1: I thought that that was well, at least back in my day, when I was out there at the rodeo.
• 12:29
Speaker 1: They had a competition.
• 12:31
Speaker 1: They did and they would sabotage the tractor and it was up to the ag mechanic team, from whatever school it was, to find out what the problem was and get it running.
• 12:41
Speaker 1: Or it was all by the clock.
• 12:42
Speaker 2: And it could be anything from a fuse to maybe a wiring harness to a pinhole.
• 12:46
Speaker 5: Anything A vacuum line and they.
• 12:48
Speaker 5: But at Rodeo, you're familiar, they gave them those great big snap-on boxes.
• 12:52
Speaker 5: That was their trophy, yeah.
• 12:54
  Speaker 4: Oh wow.
• 12:54
Speaker 5: So they got you know five $10,000 snap-on toolboxes for their classroom or their rag mechanics program.
• 13:00
  Speaker 5: That's what we're doing next.
• 13:01
Speaker 5: I got a lot of people that want kids to.
• 13:03
Speaker 5: Not all kids are going to go to college.
• 13:05
Speaker 5: Right, and just accept it.
• 13:08
Speaker 2: Well, you know and you look at what the colleges are offering nowadays too, and how much it costs.
• 13:12
  Speaker 1: Yeah, that's it.
• 13:13
Speaker 1: Oh man, yeah A lot.
• 13:16
Speaker 1: Thank you so much for coming by.
• 13:18
Speaker 1: It was a pleasure and an honor to talk to you.
• 13:21
Speaker 1: Thank you and sorry for your loss, and just chalk this up as another one for Cole.
• 13:27
Speaker 5: Make lemonade out of lemons, that's it.
• 13:30
Speaker 1: Thanks again, thank y'all.

Speaker 1: about Emmons, or was it the end of the block?

• 16:43
Speaker 6: I was looking at them online and found very clean, very reasonable, low miles, low miles.
• 16:50
Speaker 6: Started buying them for the stepkiddos.
• 16:53
Speaker 6: Great cars, you don't have to haggle on the price.
• 16:56
  Speaker 1: That's right, there's no haggling.
• 16:58
Speaker 6: That's the price of the car, it's the price you want it, you get it, you drive it, boom, you're done.
• 17:03
