- 0:00Speaker 1: Give WOOR, bre said on the iHeart Radio app to

- 0:09Speaker 1: go back to the Mark Simo show on wo R.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Well, Emma Joe Morris a great reporter, writer, political analyst
- 0:20Speaker 2: New York Post for years, Breitbart done a lot of stuff.
- 0:23Speaker 2: She was first with the Hunter laptop story and many
- 0:26Speaker 2: other big stories, and she's with us now. Emma Joe Morris,
- 0:29Speaker 2: how are you?
- 0:31Speaker 3: Mark? Thank you so much for having me on.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Now let me ask you a question. Are you Emma
- 0:35Speaker 2: Joe's timely first new year? Are you just Emma? Now?
- 0:39Speaker 4: Well I was. I was apparently given a new name
- 0:42Speaker 4: when I entered consulting world better better.
- 0:46Speaker 3: Consultants than me set up my business.
- 0:48Speaker 4: Card and email address and put me as Emma but
- 0:51Speaker 4: my byline and the people who have read me know
- 0:53Speaker 4: me as Emma Joe.
- 0:54Speaker 2: Oh good, so they're me. I like Emma Joe better.
- 0:58Speaker 2: So Hey, for people that don't know you, you were
- 1:00Speaker 2: the first person with the Hunter laptop story.
- 1:02Speaker 3: Right, yes, yes, my plans are fame.
- 1:05Speaker 2: And apparently how did how did you? How are you
- 1:08Speaker 2: the first to get a hold of that story?
- 1:11Speaker 4: Well? It was a it was a strange call in
- 1:14Speaker 4: September of twenty twenty from Steve Bannon, who at the
- 1:17Speaker 4: time I didn't know. Uh, And I just get this
- 1:20Speaker 4: call saying, Hi, I'm Steve Bannon, and I have a
- 1:24Speaker 4: story that's going to change your life. At the time,
- 1:27Speaker 4: I was the deputy politics editor at the New York Post.
- 1:29Speaker 4: I was running national coverage there. And I say to him, Okay,
- 1:33Speaker 4: you know, I know that this guy has a quite
- 1:35Speaker 4: flamboyant way of speaking.
- 1:37Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm like, what is it? And he's like, I
- 1:41Speaker 3: have Hunter Biden's computer and the rest is history. I guess.
- 1:46Speaker 3: I mean, there's a lot of history, but the rest
- 1:48Speaker 3: is history.
- 1:49Speaker 2: Hey, so Hunter Biden brings it to the repair place,
- 1:51Speaker 2: So how did it get to Steve Bannon?
- 1:54Speaker 3: Yeah, so it's that's actually a really fascinating question.
- 1:57Speaker 4: It's solid asked, but it is like one of the
- 2:00Speaker 4: more interesting parts I think of the story, which is
- 2:03Speaker 4: this guy gets Hunter Biden's computer. It's water damage, so
- 2:06Speaker 4: it keeps shutting down, and the service was to transfer
- 2:10Speaker 4: his hard drive to a new computer, but because he
- 2:13Speaker 4: kept shutting down, he had to keep stopping and starting
- 2:15Speaker 4: in his transfer. So he was reviewing kind of what
- 2:18Speaker 4: he was doing as he was doing it, to keep
- 2:20Speaker 4: track of what he had and what he still had
- 2:22Speaker 4: to do, so he knew it was on the computer
- 2:24Speaker 4: when Hunter Biden never picked it up. He didn't want
- 2:28Speaker 4: possession of it because he thought that there was stuff
- 2:30Speaker 4: that may have even compromised national security on there or something,
- 2:33Speaker 4: and he obviously doesn't have any sort of clearance. He's
- 2:36Speaker 4: like a computer guy in Delaware. So he calls the
- 2:39Speaker 4: FBI and hands the computer over to the FBI, and
- 2:42Speaker 4: that's that he removes it from his mind. And then
- 2:47Speaker 4: fast forward, not even six months later, is the first impeachment, which,
- 2:53Speaker 4: if you recall, was the perfect phone call where Trump
- 2:56Speaker 4: pass Ukraine to investigate America corruption in that country and
- 3:02Speaker 4: the Democrats had a total freak out and tried to
- 3:05Speaker 4: impeach him over it, or did impeach him over it,
- 3:07Speaker 4: but anyway, you know, the computer prepare shop guy is
- 3:10Speaker 4: hearing about this in the news, and he knows that
- 3:12Speaker 4: the FBI is in possession of exculpatory evidence of the
- 3:15Speaker 4: President because he gave it.
- 3:18Speaker 3: To them, and so he's.
- 3:20Speaker 4: Watching the impeachment, you know, captivated by it because he
- 3:25Speaker 4: thinks that he's going to have some small part in history,
- 3:28Speaker 4: and he wants to watch it, and he watches the
- 3:31Speaker 4: whole thing and he's very attentive, and then he.
- 3:34Speaker 3: Realizes that it never appears. And so then in his
- 3:39Speaker 3: head he's like, so it's been concealed.
- 3:44Speaker 4: And then he goes, oh, so is there is there
- 3:48Speaker 4: a crooked call? You know, who's concealing it? And so
- 3:52Speaker 4: what does he do? He calls Trump's lawyer, who is Rudy,
- 3:56Speaker 4: and you know from there you know it's Rudy had
- 4:01Speaker 4: it and share it with Steve and they decided, Hey,
- 4:04Speaker 4: look like the impeachment's over. This is not relevant anymore
- 4:07Speaker 4: unless they can get out to the press.
- 4:09Speaker 3: Yeah, and that's where I come in.
- 4:11Speaker 2: Hey, if you're Hunter Biden, your father's the vice president
- 4:13Speaker 2: of the United States. You know he knows everybody, anybody.
- 4:17Speaker 2: Why would you go to some strip mall, little mom
- 4:19Speaker 2: and pop repair shop. Why wouldn't you get father to get.
- 4:22Speaker 3: You some you know what I mean? I think, right,
- 4:25Speaker 3: It's like, you know, you think that the announces.
- 4:27Speaker 4: To maybe a more legit service than some strip mall
- 4:31Speaker 4: pure repaison guy, no shriputer repairsional guy, but.
- 4:36Speaker 3: Security place.
- 4:38Speaker 4: My thinking is like Hunter was kind of you know,
- 4:40Speaker 4: if you look at his life at that time, which
- 4:43Speaker 4: you can very very intimately on the waptop see everything
- 4:46Speaker 4: that was going on. And I've got a really good
- 4:48Speaker 4: and deep sense of where he was, Like he was
- 4:51Speaker 4: kind of in this state of like delirium.
- 4:54Speaker 3: Almost his he was. He was kind of stumbling, stumbling
- 5:00Speaker 3: through life and.
- 5:00Speaker 4: A fog fairly like coherent, extremely picted to drugs, not
- 5:07Speaker 4: light drugs, hard drugs, and emotionally just kind of gone.
- 5:15Speaker 4: And I think that he probably wasn't thinking straight. I mean,
- 5:18Speaker 4: he certainly wasn't thinking straight. He forgot it there ultimately.
- 5:21Speaker 2: Good. So, Emma, Emma Morris, Emma Joe Morris. You got
- 5:26Speaker 2: the laptop, you got the hard drive. So now when
- 5:30Speaker 2: you gave it to the New York Poster, you gave
- 5:31Speaker 2: it to the editor, you would think, immediately, go hold
- 5:34Speaker 2: the press, this is going on the front page. That
- 5:36Speaker 2: didn't happen, though, right, People are a little leery.
- 5:38Speaker 3: Right, you know, I mean, yeah, like that's the thing.
- 5:40Speaker 4: And you know, we learned after the fact that you know,
- 5:43Speaker 4: the Post wasn't the only ones who were kind of
- 5:46Speaker 4: nervous about what they had. Like, you know, you like
- 5:50Speaker 4: to think that newspapers and media organizations are you know,
- 5:54Speaker 4: just solely focused on breaking news, and you know, in
- 5:59Speaker 4: their best moments day are but there's other considerations to
- 6:02Speaker 4: make you know, this is an employer of thousands of
- 6:04Speaker 4: people and NewsCorp is and you know they obviously you
- 6:08Speaker 4: have to think about their own business survival. First of all,
- 6:11Speaker 4: not getting sued is a really important priority. And I
- 6:15Speaker 4: think that you know, a young editor at the time,
- 6:18Speaker 4: I was twenty seven, you know, brings in this kind
- 6:22Speaker 4: of radioactive scoof and it's like, what's our exposure here?
- 6:27Speaker 4: Is this worth that exposure? What is the news value
- 6:30Speaker 4: of this actually? Other than just its salaciousness?
- 6:34Speaker 3: Is there a there? There is the they're they're worth
- 6:37Speaker 3: the risk, you know?
- 6:39Speaker 4: And I think that that's kind of what starts going
- 6:41Speaker 4: through your mind if you're a more senior editor and
- 6:43Speaker 4: editor in chief or you know, obviously you're in the
- 6:47Speaker 4: legal department. It's like, is this juice worth the squeeze?
- 6:51Speaker 4: And what exactly is the squeeze?
- 6:53Speaker 2: So they must have how did they make you uh,
- 6:55Speaker 2: they must make you verify it? How did you absolutely
- 6:57Speaker 2: verify it with Hunters?
- 6:59Speaker 1: Well?
- 6:59Speaker 4: Right, so at the end, you know, with I can
- 7:02Speaker 4: be a very relentless I can be very annoying.
- 7:05Speaker 3: Probably made me good at journalism. I'm sure you have no,
- 7:11Speaker 3: but you know, it's like.
- 7:12Speaker 4: Listen, I wear that as a badge of honor. I
- 7:14Speaker 4: suppose in my work at least, it's served me very well.
- 7:17Speaker 3: And that's my personality.
- 7:19Speaker 4: So I was kind of just badgering and badgering about it,
- 7:21Speaker 4: and finally, you know, it's like, okay, we're running it,
- 7:24Speaker 4: and then it's time to verify it, right, And that's
- 7:26Speaker 4: a good question, right, because it's like thousands of documents.
- 7:29Speaker 3: It's this huge.
- 7:31Speaker 4: I mean, it's it's a full hard drive and a
- 7:32Speaker 4: loaded one at that, and so you know, at that point,
- 7:37Speaker 4: it's God, it's October, the election is in a month,
- 7:43Speaker 4: the last debate is coming up in the next you know,
- 7:46Speaker 4: a few days after we have it. And so so
- 7:52Speaker 4: I was like, you know, what, like the forensics or
- 7:56Speaker 4: whatever is not even.
- 7:58Speaker 3: The whole thing isn't relevant. Relevant is what we're reporting.
- 8:01Speaker 3: So what we decided to do was to.
- 8:03Speaker 4: Figure out what we were actually reporting, what was actually newsworthy,
- 8:07Speaker 4: what is relevant to the story.
- 8:10Speaker 3: We don't have to.
- 8:10Speaker 4: Verify every single picture in his photo album or every
- 8:14Speaker 4: single email in his inbox even we just had to
- 8:17Speaker 4: make sure that what we were reporting was true and
- 8:21Speaker 4: we could discard the rest.
- 8:22Speaker 3: I mean, we were discarding the rest.
- 8:24Speaker 4: So what we did was we figured out what we
- 8:26Speaker 4: were reporting, what it was based on, and verified that information.
- 8:30Speaker 4: And the way to do that was very two dimensional
- 8:34Speaker 4: and you know, very very very low definition.
- 8:38Speaker 3: It was just there's people see Seed on.
- 8:40Speaker 4: All these emails, Like, so all of the reporting was
- 8:42Speaker 4: based on emails. If people see Seed on the emails,
- 8:45Speaker 4: all of them. Hey, it's the New York Post. Do
- 8:47Speaker 4: you have a copy of this. Does it sound familiar
- 8:49Speaker 4: to you? I'm about to read you something. Tell me
- 8:51Speaker 4: if you've ever seen it?
- 8:52Speaker 2: That was it interesting? Hey, so you break the laptop story.
- 8:56Speaker 2: It's big news. You're watching the presidential debate. Trump brings
- 8:59Speaker 2: it up. Biden says, I have a letter here from
- 9:02Speaker 2: fifty intelligence officers saying this is Russian.
- 9:05Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 9:05Speaker 2: Did you think to yourself, Wow, that's pretty smart. I
- 9:07Speaker 2: wouldn't have thought to do that make up time.
- 9:10Speaker 3: Oh no, I thought to myself, we have him so nailed.
- 9:13Speaker 3: This is epic. Ye know, once they're telling you you're
- 9:16Speaker 3: Russian disinforma.
- 9:17Speaker 4: It's what like, okay, like you guys have you're totally
- 9:22Speaker 4: you're out, You're you're totally depleted of anything that you
- 9:25Speaker 4: could say. If you're telling me I'm a Russian disinformation
- 9:28Speaker 4: what are you talking about?
- 9:29Speaker 3: Like I'm in New York City.
- 9:30Speaker 2: There's nothing you could say, but you gotta you gotta
- 9:32Speaker 2: give him credit. Well, if there's nothing you could say.
- 9:34Speaker 2: That was pretty smart. And they went around They got
- 9:37Speaker 2: fifty CIA FBI heads to sign it. Yeah. Pretty impressive,
- 9:41Speaker 2: very smart.
- 9:42Speaker 4: Yeah, pretty impressive for you know, the intelligence community, which
- 9:46Speaker 4: is what it was, you know, I mean, we're laughing
- 9:48Speaker 4: about it now. It says utterly stupid, but you know,
- 9:52Speaker 4: at the time like it was, they were running a
- 9:55Speaker 4: straight up operation domestically that you know, I mean, that
- 10:00Speaker 4: was the subject of a lot of scrutiny and obviously investigation.
- 10:03Speaker 4: It went nowhere by the Republicans in Congress shockingly, but you.
- 10:07Speaker 3: Know, matter that can use the scandal.
- 10:09Speaker 2: Yeah, Hey, I was gonna say, the New.
- 10:11Speaker 3: York Post reports something and the CIA decided, no.
- 10:14Speaker 4: You're not.
- 10:16Speaker 2: Uh hey, Emma, Emma, Joe Morris, I was gonna talk
- 10:18Speaker 2: you about all kinds of things we're running out to
- 10:19Speaker 2: we don't have much time left. So let me just
- 10:20Speaker 2: ask you real fast, U Mom, Donnie? Will we get
- 10:23Speaker 2: through these four years? Would be okay? At the end
- 10:25Speaker 2: of it?
- 10:25Speaker 4: Oh god, I mean listen, every day it's like every
- 10:29Speaker 4: day now we've just had this subway subway shover who
- 10:33Speaker 4: shoved the guy down the stairs and killed them? Like
- 10:35Speaker 4: can you imagine? It's like, you know, you hobble through
- 10:38Speaker 4: the four years.
- 10:39Speaker 3: But at what costs. It's just very upsetting, it's devastating.
- 10:43Speaker 3: It's it's not it's not New York.
- 10:47Speaker 2: All right, Well, I wish we had more time about
- 10:49Speaker 2: to do this again, but the laptop stuff fascinating. Now
- 10:52Speaker 2: if people want to follow you, where should they go?
