Chapter twenty nine. This chapter gives us an account of God's providences concerning Jacob,
0:05
pursuant to the promises made to him in the foregoing chapters. Roman numeral
0:10
one. How he was brought in safety to his journey's end and directed to
0:15
his relations there, who bade him welcome Verses one to fourteen, Roman Numeral
0:20
two. How he is comfortably disposed of in marriage Verses fifteen through thirty Roman
0:25
Numeral three. How his family was built up in the birth of four sons
0:30
Verses thirty one through thirty five. The affairs of princes and mighty nations that
0:35
were then in being are not recorded in the Book of God, but are
0:39
left to be buried in oblivion, while these small domestic concerns of Holy Jacob
0:44
are particularly recorded with their mentate circumstances, that they may be in everlasting remembrance
0:50
for the memory of just is blessed. Jacob's arrival in Peddam Aram b c.
0:58
Seventeen sixty, Verse is one through eight. Then Jacob went on his
1:03
journey and came into the land of the people of the east. And he
1:06
looked and behold a well in the field, And lo, there was three
1:11
flocks of sheeps lying by it. For out of that well they watered the
1:15
flocks. And a great stone was upon the well's mouth, and thither where
1:19
all the flocks gathered. And they rolled the stone from the well's mouth and
1:25
watered the sheep, and put the stone again upon the well's mouth in his
1:29
place. And Jacob said, unto them, my brethren, whence be ye?
1:34
And they said, of Aharan are we? And he said, unto
1:38
them, know ye Levin, the son of Naur. And they said,
1:42
we know him. And he said, unto them, is he well?
1:45
And they said he is well? And behold, Rachel is his daughter cometh
1:49
with the sheep. And he said, lo, it is yet high day.
1:53
Neither is it time that the cattle should be gathered together. Water ye
1:59
the sheep, and go and feed them. And they said, we cannot
2:02
until all the flocks be gathered together, until they roll the stone from the
2:07
well's mouth, then we water the sheep. All the stages Israel's march to
2:14
Canaan are distinctly noticed, but no particular journalists kept of Jacob's expedition further than
2:21
Bethel. No, he had no more such happy nights as he had at
2:25
Bethel. No more such visions of the Almighty that was intended for a feast,
2:30
He must not accept it to be his daily bread. But one we
2:37
are here told how cheerfully he proceeded in his journey after the sweet communion he
2:40
had with God at Bethel. Then Jacob lifted up his feet, so the
2:46
margin reads it verse one. Then he went on with cheerfulness and alacrity,
2:52
not burdened with his cares, nor cramped with his fears, being assured of
2:55
God's gracious presence with him. After the visions we have ahead of God,
3:01
and the vows we have made to Him in solemn ordinances, we should run
3:07
the way of commandments with enlarged hearts. Hebrews twelve. First one, how
3:13
happily he arrived at his journey's in Providence brought him to the very field where
3:16
his uncle's flock were to be watered, and there he met Rachel, who
3:22
was to be his wife. Observe one. The divine providence is to be
3:25
acknowledged in all the little circumstances which concur to make a journey or other undertaking
3:31
comfortable and successful. If when we are at loss we meet seasonably with those
3:38
that can direct us. If we meet with a disaster, and those are
3:43
at hand that will help us. We must not say that it was by
3:46
chance, nor that fortune therein favored us, but that it was providence and
3:52
that God therein favored us. Our ways are ways of pleasantness if we continually
3:59
acknowledge God in them. Two. Those that have flocks must look well to
4:03
them and be diligent to another state. Proverbs twenty seven, verse twenty three.
4:10
What is here said of the constant care of the shepherds concerning their sheep
4:14
Verses two, three, seven, and eight may serve to illustrate the tender
4:18
concern which our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, has for
4:23
his flock the church, for he is the good shepherd that knows his sheep
4:28
and is known of them. John ten four, verse fourteen. The stone
4:32
at the well's mouth, which is so often mentioned here, was either to
4:36
secure the property in it, for water was scarce. It was not their
4:42
use's communists aquarium for everyone's use. Or it was to save the well from
4:47
receiving damage from the heat of the sun or from any spiteful hands, or
4:53
to prevent the lamb of the flock from being drowned in it. Three,
4:57
Separate interests should not take us from joint and mutual help. When all the
5:00
shepherds came together with their flocks, then like loving neighbors at watering time,
5:05
they would water their flocks together. Four. It becomes us to speak civilly
5:11
and respectfully to strangers. Though Jacob was no courtier, but a plain man
5:15
dwelling in tents into strayerture to compliment. Yet he had treasures himself very obligingly
5:21
to the people he met with, and calls them his brethren. Verse four.
5:27
The law of kindness in the tongue has a commanding power Proverbs thirty one,
5:32
verse twenty six. Some think he calls them brethren because they were of
5:36
the same trade shepherds like him. Though he was now upon his preferment,
5:43
he was not ashamed of his occupation. Five. Those that show respect have
5:47
usually respect shown to them. As Jacob was civil to these strangers, so
5:51
he found them civil to him when he undertook to teach them how to dispatch
5:57
their business verse seven. They did not bid him meddle with his own concerns
6:02
and let them alone. But though he was a stranger, they gave him
6:06
the reason of their delay. Verse eight. Those that are neighborly and friendly
6:12
shall have a neighborly and friendly usage. Rachel's Humility in Industry b. C.
6:17
Seventeen sixty, Verses nine through fourteen. And while yet spake with them,
6:24
Rachel came with her father's sheep, for she kept them. And it
6:28
came to pass when Jacob saw Rachel, the daughter of Leban, his mother's
6:32
brother, and the sheep of Levan, his mother's brother, that Jacob went
6:36
near and rolled the stone from the weld's mouth, and watered the flock of
6:41
Leban, his mother's brother. And Jacob kissed Rachel and lift up his voice
6:46
and wept. And Jacob told Rachel that he was her father's brother, and
6:49
that he was Rebecca's son. And she ran and told her father. And
6:54
it came to pass when Leban heard the tidings of Jacob, his sister's son,
7:00
that he ran to meet him and embraced him and kissed him, and
7:02
brought him to his house. And he told Levin all these things, and
7:06
Levin said to him, surely, thou art my bone and my flesh.
7:11
Here we see one Rachel's humility and industry. She kept her father's sheep verse
7:16
nine. That is, she took the care of them, having servants under
7:20
her that were employed about them. Rachael's name signifies a sheep. Note honest,
7:26
useful labor. Isn't that which nobody needs be ashamed of, nor ought
7:31
it be a hindrance to any one's preferment. Two Jacob's tenderness and affection when
7:36
he understood that this was his kinswoman. Probably he had heard of her name
7:43
before knowing what his errand was into the country. We may suppose it struck
7:47
his mind immediately that this must be his wife, being already smined with her
7:54
ingenious, comely face, though it was probably sunburned, and she was in
7:58
the homely dressed of a shepherd. He is wonderfully officious and anxious to serve
8:03
her verse ten, and addresses himself to her with tears of joy and kisses
8:07
of love. Verse eleven. She runs with all haste to tell her father,
8:13
for she will, by no means entertain her kinsman's address without her father's
8:18
knowledge and approbation verse twelve. These mutual respects at their first indufry were good
8:22
presages of their being a happy couple. Three Providence made that which seemed contingent
8:30
and fortuousness to give speedy satisfaction to Jacob's mind, as soon as ever he
8:37
came to place what he was bound for, Abraham's servant, when he came
8:41
upon a similar errand met with similar encouragement. Thus God guides his people with
8:46
his eye Psalms twenty seven, verse eight. It is a groundless consit which
8:54
some of the Jewish writers have that Jacob, when he kissed Rachel, wept
8:58
because he had been set upon in his journey by Eliphias, the eldest son
9:03
of Esau, at the command of his father, and robbed of all his
9:09
money and jewels which his mother had given him when she sent him away.
9:13
It was plain that his passion for Rachel and surprise of his happy meeting had
9:18
drew these tears from his eyes. For Laban, though none of the best
9:24
humored men bade him welcome, was satisfied in the account he gave himself and
9:30
of the reason of his comings in such poor circumstances. While we avoid the
9:33
extreme on the one hand of being foolishly credulous, we must take heed of
9:39
falling into the other extreme, of being uncharitably jealous and suspicious, Lebon owned
9:46
him for his kinsmen, though art my bone and flesh verse fourteen. Note
9:52
those are hard hearted, indeed, that are unkind to their relations, and
9:56
that hide themselves from their own flesh Isaiah fifty eight, verse seven. Jacob's
10:03
Marriage b. C. Seventeen fifty three, Verses fifteen through thirty. And
10:09
Laban said, unto Jacob, because thou art my brother, shouldst thou therefore
10:13
serve me for nought? Tell me what shall thy wages be? And Leaban
10:18
had two dollars. The name of the elder was Leah. The name of
10:22
the younger was Rachel. Leah was tender eyed, but Rachel was beautiful and
10:26
well favored. And Jacob loved Rachel and said, I will serve thee seven
10:31
years for Rachel, thy young daughter. And Laban said, it is better
10:35
that I give her to thee than that I should give her to another man.
10:39
Abide with me. And Jacob served seven years for Rachel, and they
10:43
seemed unto him, but a few days for their love he had to her.
10:48
And Jacob said, unto Laban, give me my wife, for my
10:52
days are fulfilled, that I may go in under her. And Laban gathered
10:56
together all of the men of the place and made a feat. And it
11:01
came to pass in the evening that he took Leah his daughter, and brought
11:03
her to him, and he went in unto her. And Lebon gave unto
11:09
his daughter Leah Zilpah his maid for a handmaid. And it came to pass
11:15
that in the morning, behold it was Leah. And he said to Levin,
11:18
what is this thou hast done unto me? Did not I serve with
11:24
thee for Rachel? Wherefore then hast thou beguiled me? And Laban said,
11:30
it must not be so done in our country to give the younger before the
11:33
firstborn fulfill her weak. And we will give thee this also for the service
11:39
which thou shalt serve with me yet seven other years, and Jacob did so
11:45
and fulfilled her weak, and he gave him Rachel his daughter to wife.
11:50
Also, and Lebon gave to Rachel his daughter be Laha his handmaid, to
11:56
be her maid. And he went in all so unto Rachel. And he
12:01
loved also Rachel more than Leah, and served with him yet seven other years.
12:07
Here is one the fair contract may between Lebon and Jacob. During the
12:13
month that Jacob spent there as a guest verse fourteen, it seems he was
12:16
not idle, nor did he spend his time in sport and pastime. But
12:22
like a man of business, though he had no stock of his own,
12:24
he applied himself to serve his uncle, as he had begun verse ten when
12:30
he watered his flock. Note, wherever we are, it is good to
12:33
be employed ourselves in some useful business which will turn to a good account to
12:39
ourselves or others. Lebon, it seems, was so taken with Jacob's ingenuity
12:43
and industry about his flock, that he was as sorrous he should continue with
12:50
him, and very fairly reasons. Thus, because that art my brother,
12:54
shouldest Thou therefore serve me for not verse fifteen, no what reason, And
13:00
for that, if Jacob be so respectful to his uncle as to give him
13:03
a service without demanding any consideration for it, yet Lebon will not be so
13:09
unjust to his nephew as to take advantage either of his necessity or of his
13:15
good nature. Note, inferior relations must not be imposed upon. If it
13:20
be their duty to serve us, it is our duty to reward them.
13:24
Now Jacob had a fair opportunity to make known to Lebanon the affection he had
13:28
for his daughter Rachel, and having no wordly goods in his hands with which
13:33
to endow her, he promises some seven years service, upon condition that at
13:37
the end of seven years he would bestow her upon him for his wife.
13:43
It appears by computation that Jacob has now seventy seven years old, and when
13:48
he bound himself apprentice for a wife, and for a wife to kept sheep
13:52
Joseah twelve, Verse twelve, his prosperity are there reminded of it long afterwards,
13:58
as an instance of the meanness of their origin. Probably Rachel was young
14:03
and scarcely marriageable when Jacob first came, which made him the more willing to
14:09
stay for her till his seven years service had expired. Two Jacob's honest performance
14:15
of his part of the bargain verse twenty, he served seven years for Rachel.
14:20
If Rachel still continued to keep her father's sheep as she did verse nine,
14:24
his innocent and religious conservation with her while they kept their flocks could not
14:30
but increase their mutual acquaintance and affection. Solemn song of Love is a pastoral.
14:35
If she now left it off, his easing her of the care was
14:39
very obliging. Jacob honestly served out his seven years and did not forfeit his
14:43
indentures though he was old. Nay, he served cheerfully. They seemed to
14:48
him but a few days for the love he had to her, as if
14:52
it were more his desire to earn her than to have her. Note love
14:58
makes long and hard services. Hence, when we read a labor of love
15:03
Hebrews, chapter six, verse ten, if we know how to value the
15:07
happiness of Heaven, the sufferings of the present time will be as nothing to
15:11
us in comparison of it. An age of work will be just a few
15:16
days to those that love God and long for Christ. Appearing three the base
15:22
cheat which Laban put upon him when he was out of time, he put
15:26
Leah into his arms instead of Rachel First twenty three. This was Levinson.
15:31
He wronged both Jacob and Rachel, whose affections, doubtless were engaged to each
15:35
other. And if, as some say, Lea was heron no better than
15:39
an adulterys, it was no small wrong to her to do. But it
15:45
was Jacob's affliction a damped to the mirth of the marriage feast, when in
15:48
the morning behold it was Leah verse twenty five. It is easy to observe
15:54
hear how Jacob was paid in his own coin. He had cheated his own
15:58
foot when he pretended to be Esau, and now his father in law cheated
16:03
him Heron how unrighteous soever Lebon was, the Lord was righteous as judges one
16:11
verse seven. Even the righteous, if they take a false step, are
16:15
sometimes thus recompensed on the earth. Many they are, not, like Jacob,
16:19
disappointed in the person, soon find themselves, as much to their grief,
16:25
disappointed in the character. The choice of that relation, therefore, on
16:29
both sides, ought to be made with good advice and consideration, that if
16:33
there should be a disappointment, it may not be aggravated by a consciousness of
16:38
mismanagement. Four. The excuse of atonement Leban made for the cheat. One
16:45
excuse was frivolous. It must not be done in our country verse twenty six.
16:51
We have reason to think that there was no such custom of country as
16:55
he pretends. Only he banters Jacob with it and laughs at his mistake.
17:00
Note those that can do wickedly and then think to turn it off with a
17:04
jest, though they may deceive themselves, and others will find at last that
17:08
God is not mocked. But there had been such a custom that he had
17:14
resolved to observe it. He should have told Jacob so when he undertook to
17:18
serve him for his younger daughter. Note as Saith, the proverbs of the
17:23
ancient wickedness proceeds from the wicked First Samuel twenty four, verse thirteen, Those
17:30
that deal with treacherous men must expect to be dealt treacherously. With his compounding
17:34
the matter did but make bad worst, we will give thee this also verse
17:40
twenty seven. Hereby he drew Jacob into sin and snare and disquiet of multiplying
17:45
wives, which remains a blot in his escutcheon, and will be so to
17:51
the end of the world. Honest Jacob did not design it, but to
17:55
have kept as true to Rachel as his father had done to Rebecca. He
17:59
that had lived without a wife to the eighth fourth year of his age,
18:03
could then have been very well content with one. But Lebon disposed of his
18:08
two dollars with portions, and to get seven years service more out of Jacob
18:14
thus imposes upon him, and draws him into such a strait by his fraud,
18:18
that the matter not being yet settled as it was afterwards by the divine
18:22
law Levetticus eighteen verse eighteen, and more fully sensed by our Savior Matthew nineteen
18:32
verse five, he had some colorable reasons for marrying them both. He could
18:37
not refuse Rachel, for he had espoused her. Still less could he refuse
18:41
Leer, for he had married her. And therefore Jacob must be content and
18:45
take two talents Second King's verse twenty three. Note one sin is commonly the
18:51
inlet of another. Those that go in by one door of wickedness, seldom
18:55
by their way out by another. The polygamy of the patriarch's in some measurables
19:00
excusable in them, because though there was no reason against it ancient as Adam's
19:06
marriage Malachi two, verse fifteen, yet there was no express command against it.
19:12
It was in them a sin of ignorance. It was not the product
19:18
of any sinful lust, but for the building up of the church, which
19:21
was the good that Providence brought out of it. But it will by no
19:25
means justify the like practice now, when God's will is plainly made known that
19:30
one man and one woman only must be joined together. First Corinthians seven,
19:37
verse two. The having of many wives suits well enough with the cardinal sensual
19:41
spirit of mohammedan imposture which allows it. But we have not so learned.
19:47
Christ. Doctor Lightfoot makes Leia and Rachel to be figures of the two churches,
19:52
the Jews under the law and the Gentiles under the Gospel. The younger,
19:56
the more beautiful, and the more in the thoughts of the Christ when
19:59
he came in the form of a servant. But he other like Leah,
20:03
first embraced. Yet in the allegory does not hold that the gentiles the younger
20:10
were more fruitful. Galatians four, first twenty seven. Increase of Jacob's family
20:15
Baste seventeen forty nine, Verses thirty one through thirty five. And when the
20:22
Lord saw that Layah was hated, he opened her womb, but Rachel was
20:26
barren, and Leah conceived in Bearra's son, and she called his name Reuben,
20:30
for she said, surely the Lord hath looked upon my affliction. Now
20:36
therefore my husband will love me. And she conceived again and bear a son,
20:41
and said, because the Lord hath heard that I was hated. He
20:44
had therefore given me the son also, and she called his name Simon.
20:49
And she conceived again and Bearra's son, and said, now this time will
20:53
my husband be joined unto me, because I have borne him three sons.
20:57
Therefore was his name called called Levi. And she conceived again and bear a
21:03
son, and she said, now I will praise the Lord. Therefore she
21:07
called him name Judah, and left bearing. We have here the birth of
21:11
four of Jacob's sons, all by Leah. Observed one, that Leah,
21:17
who was less beloved and blessed with children, when Rachel was denied that blessing
21:22
verse thirty one. See how Providence, in dispensing its gifts, observes a
21:27
proportion to keep the balance, even setting crosses and comforts one over against another,
21:33
that none may be either too much elevated or too much depressed. Rachel
21:38
wants children, but she is blessed with her husband's love. Lay wants that,
21:42
but she is fruitful. Thus it was between it Alecana's two wives first
21:48
Samuel one, verse five. For that the Lord is wise and righteous.
21:55
And the Lord saw that Leah was hated, that is loved less than Rachel,
22:00
in which, since it is required that we hate father and mother in
22:04
comparison with christ Luke fourteen, verse twenty six, then the Lord granted her
22:10
a child, which was a rebuke to Jacob for making so great a difference
22:15
between those that he was equally related to, a check to Rachel, who
22:18
perhaps insulted over her sister upon that account, and a comfort to Lea that
22:23
she might not be overwhelmed with a contempt put upon her. Thus, Scott
22:29
giveth abundant honor to the which lacked first Corinthians twelve twenty four. Two.
22:37
The names she gave her children were expressive of her respectful regards both to God
22:42
and to her husband. One she appears very ambitious of her husband's love.
22:48
She reckoned the want of fit her affliction verse thirty two, not upbraiding him
22:55
with it as his fault, nor reproaching him for it, and so make
23:00
being herself uneasy to him, belaying it to heart as her grief, which
23:04
yet she had reason to bear with the more patience, because she herself was
23:08
consenting to fraud by which she became his wife. And we may well bear
23:14
that trouble with patience, which we bring upon ourselves by our own sin and
23:18
folly. She promised herself that the children she bore him would gain her the
23:23
interest she desired in his affections. She called her first born, Reuben see
23:29
a son, with the pleasant thought, now will my husband love me?
23:33
And her third son, Levi joined with this expectation, now will my husband
23:37
join unto me? Verse thirty four. Mutual affection is both the duty and
23:44
comfort of the relation and yoke. Fellows should study to recommend themselves to each
23:49
other. First Corinthians seven, Verses thirty three and thirty four. Two.
23:55
She thankfully acknowledges the kind providence of God in it. The Lord hath looked
24:00
upon my afflictions Verse thirty two. The Lord Hath heard that it is taken
24:06
notice of it that I was hated for our afflictions, as they are before
24:11
God's eyes, so they have a cry in his ears. He has therefore
24:15
given me this son. Note whatever we have contributes either to our support and
24:21
comfort under our afflictions, or to our deliverance from them, God must be
24:26
owned in it, his fleshly, his pity and tender mercy. Her fourth
24:30
she called Judah praise, saying, now while I praise Lord, Verse thirty
24:37
five. And this was he of whom, as concerning the flesh, Christ's
24:41
name. Note one, whatever is the matter of rejoicing, ought to be
24:47
the matter of our thanksgiving, fresh favors should quicken us to pays God for
24:52
former favors. Now while I praise the Lord more and better than I have
24:56
done. Two, all our praises must sin in Christ, both as the
25:00
matter of them and as a mediator of them. He descended from him whose
25:06
name was praised. For he is praised, Is Christ formed in my heart?
25:11
Now will I praise the Lord. End of Chapter twenty nine.
