- 0:33Hamster with a blump. Pen Knife for doing Quicker,
- 0:35quicker, quicker, quicker. Welcome back to Hampton with a
- 0:41Blump Pen Knife, the Doctor Who commentary podcast.
- 0:45This is Take two because I just fluffed up.
- 0:47Take one. I am here with the wonderful
- 0:52Matt Michael. Say hello, Matt.
- 0:55Hello. How you doing tonight?
- 0:57I'm good. Thanks, Jane.
- 0:59Yeah. You got quite high then, yeah.
- 1:03It's a battle for who can go high, yeah.
- 1:09Looking forward to a bit of PERT reaction.
- 1:12Oh man, I always love a bit of pert reaction.
- 1:15Actually, I've got, I need to say, a little small confession
- 1:18before we go into this. I kind of fancy pert we a little
- 1:22bit, you know. I think he's definitely the most
- 1:26doable. Classic Doctor.
- 1:28He's very charismatic, isn't he? I mean, cuz Davidson's sort of
- 1:34more obviously, sort of younger and widely, really sexless.
- 1:39He's. Very, very boring.
- 1:41Imagine he's like an action man down there.
- 1:44Imagine like the Third Doctor. Hurt way, man.
- 1:48Yeah. Yeah, and it's just like the way
- 1:50he tosses blokes about. He's not playing at being A.
- 1:53Human. No.
- 1:55There's a video on YouTube, you know.
- 1:57Have you ever seen the Bake color videos?
- 2:00Yes. So there's a video from John
- 2:03Purley, and it's all like a montage of clips of him like
- 2:08doing lots of action to I Need a Hero by Bonnie Tyler.
- 2:13And sometimes if I'm short of, like, poor material, I'll just
- 2:16put that on instead. No, I don't.
- 2:17I don't. I don't.
- 2:20Okay, God, we've got straight to the roof stuff straight away.
- 2:24Matt, what we talking about today?
- 2:25We're going to talk about the Time Warrior from 1973 slash 4.
- 2:32I'm assuming you weren't alive when this first went out.
- 2:36I wasn't alive. I wasn't.
- 2:38My parents hadn't met. I don't think at the point that
- 2:41this went out, they certainly weren't married.
- 2:45So yeah, this is this predates me.
- 2:48This has been 1974 five I I think.
- 2:53I think me when I was, when I was.
- 2:56No, no, no. When did this?
- 2:57When was this transmitted? This was transmitted.
- 3:01I think it's the first episode went out in December 73, I
- 3:04think. So it just skirted into the
- 3:07anniversary. Yeah, because in those days I
- 3:09think they started like the three doctors bizarrely starts
- 3:12in 1972 when it goes into 73 and this one starting season 11,
- 3:18starts at the end of 73. This was shot at the end of
- 3:21season 10. Wasn't it?
- 3:23It was. Yeah, it was tacked on.
- 3:25The invasion of the dinosaurs. Yeah, because Carnival of
- 3:29Monsters was made as part of season nine.
- 3:32Season nine was a big long they made carnival monsters at the
- 3:35end of it. How bizarre.
- 3:39Because you would think, Wouldn't you like the last story
- 3:41of the season? I'm not talking about time
- 3:42flight here. I'm talking about the twin
- 3:44dilemma, you know, where the money's run out.
- 3:47The Armageddon facts are like that, but the money has clearly
- 3:50run out. But with carnival monsters and
- 3:52with the Time Warrior, I'd say like Pert was at the top of his
- 3:57game. Like, you know, Oh yeah, he's no
- 3:59tired. He's not tired.
- 4:01There's no indication that the budget is on a shoestring.
- 4:04But yeah, I think that's partly Barry.
- 4:07Let's is a good producer. He knows how to spend the money
- 4:12wisely and he knows how to sort of spread it so that you don't
- 4:15have the end of season disaster. Like everything's stuck together
- 4:21with Sellotape and the wars were all a bit wobbly.
- 4:24Spectaculars that you sort of get in the later 70s.
- 4:27What's really sad is, is they actually ended a season with the
- 4:30Time Monster rather than Garnival of monsters.
- 4:34That's for another day. So when were you born then, 79?
- 4:41Oh, you're older than me. You look about 10 years younger
- 4:44than me, you bastard. That running?
- 4:50Well, I am queued up and ready to go into the Time Warrior
- 4:52episode. One if you are, my finger is
- 4:55poised over the controls. I will count us in that Now
- 4:59what? I tell you what?
- 5:00Why don't you count me in? Not from 5:00?
- 5:04No. We should go from three,
- 5:05shouldn't we? So 321 play I I love the I love
- 5:19the start of this title sequence.
- 5:21So this is the first time that this title sequence has appeared
- 5:27and it it's sort of the Tom Baker variants.
- 5:30Obviously much more familiar but this is the first time tunnel
- 5:33diamond logo, the first sort of non electronic how round
- 5:37patterns title sequence I love. I prefer this one for the Tom
- 5:42Baker one because it's I love this weird starfield opening.
- 5:46How does Tom Baker's opening is Tom Baker's just straight into
- 5:49the sort of the Whirlpool kind of thing, yeah.
- 5:53Okay, here we have two very hairy men, and they're trying
- 5:58to. And I think that these
- 6:01theatrical performances are a delight throughout there.
- 6:05There is with with David Dacre and John C Carney.
- 6:08There is no ceiling as to how over the top they can go.
- 6:15There are absolutely there, he goes, checking the wine.
- 6:18And I love how. I love how convincingly grotty
- 6:22this already looks, and how miserable Blood Axe looks as
- 6:26well. Look at his face though, he's
- 6:28not happy to be there. Iron Groms not happy to be there
- 6:33either. They're stuck in this miserable
- 6:36castle. They presumably captured off
- 6:37someone, but they're not living the high life there.
- 6:40They're just eking out really grim existence.
- 6:44I've got to assume that the person that they captured this
- 6:47castle from was staggeringly inept, because they're not
- 6:51exactly like the smartest robber barons in the barrel, are they?
- 6:55They're definitely not the smartest.
- 6:57It's very much like Series 1, Blackadder and Baldrick.
- 7:01Yeah, what? What's really interesting about
- 7:04this scene is I've recently watched horror Fang rock which
- 7:08introduces the returns who are obviously sometimes arch enemy.
- 7:13And that starts with lighthouse keepers watching the rooftand
- 7:19spaceship come down out at sea. And you just see this light out
- 7:23in the distance coming down as they watch from the from the
- 7:26sort of lighthouse Lantern window.
- 7:30And so I think, I think Terrence Dix obviously script edited this
- 7:34was thinking back to the introduction of the suntans and
- 7:39deliberately repeated the introduction of the Suntarin
- 7:43story when he wrote the. I mean, they are supposed to be
- 7:47bitter enemies, aren't they? So for the two of them to be
- 7:49introduced in a similar way, that's a nice paraphide for the
- 7:52same coin. That's not the only parallel
- 7:55between the time warrior and horror Fang Rock, because the
- 8:00Time warrior Terence Dix forced Robert Holmes to write a
- 8:04historical and in horror Fang Rock.
- 8:08Robert Holmes forced terrorist Dicks to write a story in the
- 8:11Lighthouse. I've got a really great idea of
- 8:15the relationship. They have these two kind of
- 8:17spiky but but affectionate. You do you reckon that the
- 8:21history of 70s Doctor Who is basically a history of the two
- 8:24of them having sort of Doctor Master and it's that that's the
- 8:30sort of relationship that powers Doctor Who through its golden
- 8:34ages, potentially homes versus Dicks?
- 8:38I bet you can't do this. All right, I'm going to fucking
- 8:41well ace it, all right? I mean, OK, just in terms of
- 8:47design, I think the ship and the Sontara, it's just genius.
- 8:52It's so memorable and so simple. It is.
- 8:56It's a brilliant design. It all feels like it comes from
- 9:01the same culture as well. The sort of rounded ship, the
- 9:05rounded helmet, it's all it's a good example of where all of the
- 9:10design teams seem to be on the same page.
- 9:13So all the prop design, the costume design, the monster
- 9:16design, the mask design, all all work together.
- 9:19And I think that's one of the strengths of this very, very
- 9:22underrated story of mine. I'm.
- 9:24Not gonna get that flag made. A good question.
- 9:27Why is this so underrated? Because I'm telling you now.
- 9:30This story, I've seen it too many times to not love it.
- 9:33I've seen this about 100 Times Now.
- 9:35But it's really funny. It's like very witty.
- 9:39It's it's it's a memorable period of history.
- 9:42It's got great characters in it. There's loads of action, like,
- 9:45what is there to object to? Is it too low key?
- 9:50I I really don't know. I think there's so many.
- 9:54First, it's got the introduction of Sarah Jane, the introduction
- 9:57of Suntarins, the new title sequence.
- 10:00It's got the first mention of Gallifrey.
- 10:03And yet it's sort of, it's sort of like a footnote.
- 10:07And yet it's as important to the development of the show is the
- 10:12time the terror of the Autumns is in terms of the amount of
- 10:16stuff that it introduces this this becomes part of the ongoing
- 10:20mythology of the show. So I don't, I don't think it's
- 10:22because it's not significant. I think it's fairly flatly
- 10:28directed. If I have a criticism of it,
- 10:32it's it's not. It doesn't sort of sizzle.
- 10:35It's not a David Maloney or Michael Ferguson kind of
- 10:38direction, but you. Know I would.
- 10:40I would make a stab at saying that when it's on location it
- 10:44it's much better directed than when it's in the studio.
- 10:46I think when it's in the studio, there's a lot of sort of point
- 10:49in the shooting and barriness actually says, doesn't he, that
- 10:53Alan Bromley would find the simplest way of doing something
- 10:57rather than the most compelling way of doing it.
- 10:59And you can see that sometimes you I, I I think you can and I
- 11:03think yeah the the lighting here is is very BBC studio lighting.
- 11:09It's not there's no attempt to sort of suggest it's like
- 11:12flickering candle light. It's very sort of flat, but I
- 11:17think. What you've got, like holding
- 11:19this up, like like when you push the sort of the flat directional
- 11:23side, is you've got a master scriptwriter, a master script
- 11:29editor. Yeah, terrific actors like
- 11:32there's there's just too much to enjoy.
- 11:34Yeah, it is brilliant. And I think you know the the
- 11:38criticisms are tight. It just doesn't look as good as
- 11:42the best Doctor Who stories. It doesn't look as good as
- 11:45Invasion of the Dinosaurs for the most part.
- 11:48Is more interestingly directed by Paddy Russell.
- 11:50But I think this has a brilliant script.
- 11:53It's hilarious. It's Robert Holmes really
- 11:55letting Rick he saw. It feels like his audition for
- 11:59the top, for the sort of script editor job that he's going to
- 12:02inherit the next season. This feels like his pitch for
- 12:05what you can do. They sound carnival monsters.
- 12:09I'd say like you've just got to watch those two stories and then
- 12:11give him the job. Get like it's like obvious who
- 12:14should do it. He really gets it and it's heal
- 12:18out. There's so many very funny with
- 12:20genuinely witty lines. There's not.
- 12:23There's a lot of Pertly stories where pertly gets to be very
- 12:27moral and get some good sort of quotable lines, but there aren't
- 12:32that many where he gets very funny Tom Bakerish lines time
- 12:39and time and time again. And you know, given what
- 12:43terrorist Dick says about his roof on haircut, he doesn't get
- 12:47to let his hair down a lot, does he?
- 12:48But he does. In this, he gets to sort of
- 12:51dress up. Twice, in fact.
- 12:54One as a monk, 1 as a a night, so long as no one feels the
- 12:59basket. OK, I've used that line so many
- 13:01times about no one stealing the basket, about people stealing
- 13:04everything. When you say it like, Oh yeah,
- 13:10every time I just shove myself in their faces, you know, they
- 13:17don't quite understand what's going on, but I do.
- 13:19So that's all this important. So we just saw the Brigadier
- 13:24there phase 1-2 scenes that he gets in this yeah it's tiny tiny
- 13:30role for Nick Courtney wonder he's he's probably on retainer
- 13:35for the episode or Barry's promised him a, you know a
- 13:38couple of weeks pace so he pitched up.
- 13:42What do you think about? What do you think of a man in
- 13:43uniform? No, because I'll tell you what,
- 13:50there ain't nothing worth looking at in that way in the
- 13:53purple era. Mike Yates.
- 13:56Benton. If you guys could see Matt's
- 14:02face right now, you've been completely no, I'm I'm
- 14:05struggling to. I'm struggling to think of any,
- 14:09any dashing unit captains or sergeants in the purple era.
- 14:13It kind of feels almost like the doctors doing this as a bit of a
- 14:18favor for a mate. So he's obviously got his TARDIS
- 14:22back. He can go wherever he wants in
- 14:24time and space at this point. So Joe's left him.
- 14:29So he's not hanging around because he's waiting for Joe to
- 14:32do something. He's a free agent now.
- 14:36There's no reason why he needs to be.
- 14:38I know why he's he's dating the Brigadier now.
- 14:42Because in Planet of the Spiders, they go to the theater
- 14:44together. They're having a lovely night
- 14:47out, man. They are.
- 14:49They're in love. Oh, but who's this?
- 14:52Oh, my word, who's this cuckoo in the next?
- 14:56Can I? I'm gonna make a stab at
- 15:00something quite controversial, I think.
- 15:04I prefer Sarah in season 11 to 1213 and 14 now.
- 15:13I love Sarah as a whole, but I really love this proactive
- 15:19career woman that they present her as in this season.
- 15:23And I find that she does. She she gets more comfortable
- 15:26with the Doctor but she kind of falls into the damsel in
- 15:29distress role more often than not in the Hinge Cafe in years.
- 15:35I totally agree. I think the so my my first
- 15:38experience of the 3rd Doctor, as I guess it is for a lot of
- 15:42people is in the Five Doctors. So for me Sarah Jane in the 3rd
- 15:46Doctor is is how I how I envisage the 3rd Doctor.
- 15:51It's not the Third Doctor in Joe the the pairing that I always
- 15:54imagined for Pertweeensladen. Ohh no, no.
- 15:59That means that means your first view of Sarah is in that
- 16:03dreadful, like purple Mac throwing her handbag at the bus
- 16:07stop to escape the thing falling down that little incline in
- 16:11Wales. Yeah, I It's really weird when
- 16:15she throws her handbag when she's climbing over that fence
- 16:18and she sort of arches her back backwards and hurls her handbag.
- 16:21I reckon what happened was right is they filmed all the whales
- 16:24stuff already and they're like, well, you haven't got a handbag.
- 16:27She goes, don't worry, I got this.
- 16:28I'm a pro. I've got this.
- 16:31No, no, sorry. You were doing the impression of
- 16:37June Brown then who's about to, who's just turned up on the
- 16:41screen. Yeah.
- 16:45More more of a man than her husband in this.
- 16:49But no, I I don't think your take's controversial at all.
- 16:52I think Sarah in season 11, she she's great in this.
- 16:57She gets to carry a lot of the story and invasion of the
- 17:00dinosaurs. And a lot of the story in Planet
- 17:03for Spiders as well is driven by her investigation of the sort of
- 17:08retreat. And then Harry sort of turns up
- 17:12and Hinchcliffe takes over and he's got the new guy to set up
- 17:17and he's got a new companion to play with.
- 17:19And I think in Season 12, Sarah gets, really, it's sad.
- 17:24She gets sidelined quite a lot she gets.
- 17:26She gets tortured. Like more often than not.
- 17:30She is statistically tortured in that season in the Santorin
- 17:33experiment in Genesis of the Daleks.
- 17:37In Revenge of the Cybermen, she gets poisoned like she goes
- 17:40through hell back in season. But that's not to say that
- 17:43Elizabeth Sweden isn't like massively charismatic and
- 17:46doesn't have like terrific chemistry with Ian Martyr and
- 17:49Tombey, because she does. But I feel like the 3rd Doctor
- 17:53and Sarah, that's really underrated, that relationship
- 17:58and she's created as a kind of foil for pert.
- 18:00We as well. She's created.
- 18:03She's created as a contrast to Joe, so Joe's very poor sort of
- 18:10oil on the the doctor's troubled waters, she.
- 18:15That's rude. She sort of smooth things.
- 18:20She smooths things over when the doctor's abrasive.
- 18:24She's very sort of loving and caring about the Doctor.
- 18:28And then you get Sarah Jane, who's much more abrasive
- 18:32particularly in this, than the Doctor.
- 18:34And the Doctor suddenly forced into a bit of a Joe role.
- 18:37He has to, he has to be bit more diplomatic because Sarah isn't
- 18:43diplomatic at all. Contrast between like Joe coming
- 18:46in and being like I'm your new assistant and all and completely
- 18:50in love with him from the off. Whereas in here she's suspicious
- 18:53of him. She sends like soldiers after
- 18:56him you know she's terrific in this and and I think I think
- 19:02Pert we really reacts to that quite well.
- 19:03There's a kind of criticism of Pert we that he loses interest
- 19:07in his final. I don't really see that.
- 19:11I think I think he he does really well.
- 19:15I think he's great in Invasion of the Dinosaurs.
- 19:17He's clearly loving and he's clearly loving putting on his
- 19:22funny accents and and stuff in the first episode.
- 19:25I think he's great in because he knows his final story and he's
- 19:31really putting the asset in. But you know what, right?
- 19:34We talk about the chemistry between two leads, so I'm gonna
- 19:38mention three scenes. Now they're not in this,
- 19:40unfortunately, but in Death of the Daleks is a bit where the
- 19:44Doctor says to Sarah. If if I don't come back, you've
- 19:48got to go with the Earth people. And she objects and he like cuts
- 19:52her face and there's a silent moment between honestly it looks
- 19:55like they're about to kiss. It's so intimate.
- 19:58Skip forward to Monster Peladon. There's a scene in episode 5
- 20:02where she thinks he's dead and she's crying and it's so well
- 20:07played between the two of them. And then skip forward to Planet
- 20:10and the spiders where he does die, and that moment between the
- 20:13two of them at the end of that. I think they've got great
- 20:16chemistry. It's the bit.
- 20:19It's the bit where she takes his Cape and smells his lap and does
- 20:23it a little sniff. And there's just it's such a
- 20:27beautiful nuance of performance because it feels incredibly
- 20:32real. It's the sort of thing that.
- 20:36In a slightly different context that Bob Peck does in Edge of
- 20:39Darkness in his daughter's room when he's going through her
- 20:44stuff after she's been killed and it's, yeah, it's top class
- 20:50acting is that. And those three moments that I
- 20:53mentioned there, that's really powerful drama by two actors,
- 20:57like at the top of their game. So this kind of reputation at
- 21:00season 11 is getting a bit lazy that everybody's phoning it in.
- 21:05I can't really see that. I I completely disagree with
- 21:10that. I think it's a strong.
- 21:11I think it's actually a really strong season.
- 21:15I think there are once repelled on half, half OK, half pretty
- 21:21bad, but the rest of it. I think Death to the Daleks is
- 21:25the direction of Death to the Daleks is really strong, but
- 21:28that first episode is. Super atmospheric Terry Nation
- 21:33does his usual trick of running quite strong first episode and
- 21:36then he sort of leaves his interest in it and the IT sort
- 21:39of tails off as it goes on. Similar to have you ever the
- 21:42Android invasion. Have you ever looked at like a
- 21:44pattern floor at since and been like stop, don't move, do?
- 21:48You really? Well, you know, I, Terrence
- 21:54Dicks probably wrote that because it also appears in To
- 21:56Find Doctors, but it's really for kids that's really playable.
- 21:59Yeah, they probably go to their grandparents and they've got one
- 22:02of those tiles. I don't know what you're talking
- 22:04about. I did that.
- 22:09But you know, I'll forgive Monster Repelled on anything for
- 22:11that scene in episode 6. I always say this where Falera's
- 22:15looking at all the bodies and goes look what you've done and
- 22:19echo things like never mind and Chris grabs her.
- 22:22I just think that there's some great moments in that.
- 22:26The Ice Warriors are great in that.
- 22:29Look, we've got a stripped to the waist bit of bit.
- 22:33Torture porn. What?
- 22:35Do you know what? There was a scene earlier where
- 22:36I sorry, I'm gone. Lynx was in his armor,
- 22:40surrounded by men holding swords.
- 22:43I've seen a few porn films start like that, you know?
- 22:49I'll send you this could have been, yeah, send me the red tube
- 22:52link. This could have gone in a very
- 22:54different direction. He's got a little cod piece on
- 22:56as well. You can see that little brown
- 22:58cod piece over here. Like, everyone's so hairy.
- 23:01Except that man. He's got no.
- 23:04Hair very smooth. The links obviously waxed him to
- 23:07torture him. Little hairy nips and he's got
- 23:17oh here's do you know actually I would say about Time Warrior I
- 23:22think this is probably like I think that was always really
- 23:26good. He's just got a lot of energy in
- 23:28this story. Like, I feel like he, I feel
- 23:31like he's responding really well to the material in this.
- 23:34Yeah. What do you think of this green
- 23:38jacket? Because I'm a bit of a pertly
- 23:39jacket fan, my favorite is the Planet and the Daleks one.
- 23:44That sort of purple one. The one off?
- 23:50OK, I don't like the time monster one.
- 23:53That kind of orangey 1. The one that he wears in the the
- 23:57Three Doctors as well, yeah. Check on that.
- 24:00Yeah, what about you? What's your favorite?
- 24:02What's your favorite in Pertweek Jacket?
- 24:04Watch. Well, I I I sort of actually,
- 24:09having just slagged off the story, I really like the one in
- 24:12the Monster Paladon, which is also green, but it's a much
- 24:15darker. It's gorgeous.
- 24:18In fact, he's got a sort of green shirt with it.
- 24:20That's right, he looks stunning and it looks gorgeous.
- 24:23I think the designer, because there's a lot of green in that,
- 24:26isn't it? You've got Alpha Centauri this
- 24:27the Ice Warriors. Yeah, it's quite, it's quite
- 24:32like bold colors. Maybe they're just trying to
- 24:34make it look a bit more interesting than than it
- 24:36actually is. This is this is quite an
- 24:39interesting story for the use of costume color as well because
- 24:43the Doctor and Sarah there are in brown and green.
- 24:46If you look at the Edwards man, like how Lady Eleanor, they're
- 24:50all in brown and green as well. And then Iron Gron's men are all
- 24:53in red and black, and obviously Links is wearing the black.
- 24:58So I think there's definitely a sort of use of color to signify
- 25:04the two sides. So the sort of dirty Browns and
- 25:07greens versus the bit more sort of military Reds and blacks of
- 25:12the the bad guys. See, that's why you're here.
- 25:15Smart observations like that. I'm just here to say like I've
- 25:20got a question for you if you think I'm going to spend my time
- 25:24making cups of coffee for you. I mean, this story gets
- 25:29criticized a lot for the sexism. What what?
- 25:32What do you say to that? Do you think this is quite a
- 25:35sexist story? In what terms?
- 25:38I don't think this is. Because.
- 25:40Because the Doctor says to Sarah, you could make me a cup
- 25:43of coffee. So, so in terms of the Doctor
- 25:46being sexist. Yeah, and why she's in a
- 25:51heartbeat. So I think Sarah is actually
- 25:54more competent than the Doctor throughout much of this.
- 25:57So that kind of blows that argument out the window.
- 26:02I mean, I I kind of think that the doctor's deliberately
- 26:05winding her up and doesn't. He isn't sexist and he isn't
- 26:09actually expecting her to go and make him a coffee.
- 26:12The way that that we plays that is.
- 26:14I'm winding you up. I'm needling you because I know
- 26:17that it's going to get a rise out of you and that's going to
- 26:20entertain me while I'm stuck in this boring.
- 26:24Research facility. Whatever.
- 26:26I mean, when she comes face to face with, like, sexism later
- 26:30on, she literally says, doesn't she?
- 26:32You know what? Subservient poppycock.
- 26:35She's still living in the Middle Ages.
- 26:38And and she's got her, she has to encounter those kind of
- 26:42normal attitudes of the sort of 70s and obviously in history to
- 26:48be able to react against them otherwise.
- 26:51She just, she just looked nuts if she just started wandering
- 26:54around shouting women's lips, slogans.
- 26:58Another criticism, sorry, another criticism that I've
- 27:01heard about this. I'm just dropping it in here
- 27:04because it's just happened, is that we don't see Sarah's first
- 27:07trip in the TARDIS. Like, obviously we see her go
- 27:10in, we see her come out and go, oh, it's still only a police
- 27:12box, very underplayed. But we didn't see her go in and
- 27:16have like that. It's bigger on the inside
- 27:18moment. Is that a problem?
- 27:23I I think it would be a prob. I don't think it is.
- 27:27I think it would have been hard to do in this story.
- 27:29It would have broken the flow. Sarah needs to sort of follow
- 27:34the Doctor, or she needs to wander into the TARDIS and the
- 27:37Doctor doesn't know she's there, so it's hard to do that without.
- 27:43Having a whole load of setup like imagine when Tegan does
- 27:47something similar in the goblets you've got to have a sort of
- 27:49wandering round going, my name, my name is Tegan Geranco and
- 27:53then wandering off into the ship it's it's really hard to turn it
- 27:57no who's ever in charge of this ship.
- 28:02And and it's not important to this story.
- 28:04What's important is she has a culture shock by troubling back
- 28:08in time. So the Middle Ages, what if you
- 28:11if you had that TARDIS scene, that TARDIS interior scene, then
- 28:16I think, OK, so you need to take a massive step out of logic for
- 28:21her to assume that this is still the same place and time, but
- 28:25like a pageant version of history.
- 28:28And I think if you had that scene in the TARDIS, then you'd
- 28:31have to explain to her about time travel, about like, I think
- 28:35in order to to make that make sense, like in a character way,
- 28:39to have her just step in and step out.
- 28:42It's kind of all all you you're allowed to see, Yeah, they're
- 28:45not making sense. And it it makes sense for the
- 28:47the audience get what's happened.
- 28:50We don't, we don't need to see it.
- 28:52Plus obviously then there's all the logistics that they would
- 28:55have had to build the target set.
- 28:56Yeah, and take up studio space for Fortnight.
- 29:01For the two episodes recording with the TARDIS set for one
- 29:04scene, they said they didn't even take the TARDIS prop on
- 29:07location when they needed it. So the guy said that the special
- 29:10features he's like. He said to his procs men, where
- 29:12the hell is the TARDIS? Surely he's a prerequisite of a
- 29:15Doctor Who story? You take the TARDIS on location
- 29:18and they forgot to have to film those bits later.
- 29:22Madness. It's.
- 29:23Amazing.
