- 3:15Carter. As our story opens, we find Nick and Passio on board a
- 3:21small motor boat headed for Tory Island, a small island just off the Long
- 3:23Island shore. I'd now on the weather was going to be like this.
- 3:28I never would have accepted this job. Why are you doing it? Oh
- 3:30special favorite? The Colonel Howard, friend of his Andrew Jessop, asked him
- 3:34to band the best code acts pretty new, he said. I was a
- 3:37land of the job. So when the Colonel called me, I agree to
- 3:39do it. Just what is it you're trying to do? Well? It
- 3:42seems it back in seventeen seventy six, four wealthy toys we're afraid that Washington
- 3:46is going to capture Manhattan Island, got all their valuables together and went to
- 3:50visited island where we're going now. They buried everything somewhere on the island and
- 3:53recorded a burial place and a secret code cipher. They lived there for a
- 3:58while and later we're all lost in a storm. While I was trying to
- 4:00get back to the main one. That sounds pretty fantastic, any real truth
- 4:04in this Warrior? Andrew Jessip reason became across something that convinced him the story
- 4:09too. Go rounded up the airs of the four original Tories and arrange for
- 4:14them to meet in the island this afternoon. If I can decide for the
- 4:16code, they'll dig up the treasure and divide it this some night to dig
- 4:19up anything. I'd say. Oh gosh, Nick, I wish you hadn't
- 4:30left that. Don't leave us your life. This is the loneliest looking aland
- 4:34I have a stot. Let's be on a nasty night like this. It's
- 4:38all right, we'll go back with Jessip when he goes. Okay, you're
- 4:42the boss. Let see the house up there? Yes, wait, pat
- 4:50in the dock. I want to see what's wrong. Oh got away?
- 5:01Oh here, let me help you like that murdered. This man isn't drop
- 5:10the bullet at his head. I don't know. I think he's any identification
- 5:14on him. Here we are Diris Jays Trials. That's one of the heirs,
- 5:20Betsy, I remember the name, the nick Chinese adic. Oh yeah,
- 5:30Lapkin Ringkin Ring. I'll hear what in the world. I don't know,
- 5:32Patty, but let's get this man's body up to the house. They
- 5:36may know what it's all about. What Heaven's name are you? Jessep Yeah?
- 5:56Who are you? Nick Carter? Or come in? Come in?
- 6:00You know this man? Wait? And that File claim down here. What
- 6:05happened? Well, I heard him call out, then I heard a shot.
- 6:10I found him dead. There are your people here with you? Is
- 6:14File was here a few minutes ago, but this coming he'd left his glasses
- 6:16on my boat and went down to get them. Anyone else on the island
- 6:19only Matt Odell, the caretaker for the fishing company that owns the island.
- 6:23We're expecting Peter Brady is the personal representative of the owners to ride shortly.
- 6:27But he hasn't come yet. Where are the others in the living room?
- 6:30You're sure File was murdered. You don't get a shot through the head the
- 6:33way he was accidentally. You ever see this ring before that filed wing?
- 6:39It is part of the crew to the treasure. How did a napkin ring
- 6:42be a clue to a treasure? I can't tell you that. I simply
- 6:45know that each of the four heirs is a napkin ring like this, and
- 6:48as the four wings together give the key to the hiding place of the treasure.
- 6:53And it's possible that whoever killed this man wanted to get hold of the
- 6:56ring for himself. Who'd want to do that? Where does this mat or
- 6:59there. He had a shock? Just blow here where he lives? Why
- 7:02I think I'll have a talk with him. I'll be right back now.
- 7:15This must be adel check the only one around here. I'm not here.
- 7:26I could stay home on a night like this. Well, no one who's
- 7:30there? Oh? Fine, way to start on a case. Now?
- 7:47Who the deuce would want him an over here? What's up? Hey?
- 7:55What happened to you? I don't quite know that does? Somebody knocked me
- 7:58cold and I was looking forward? Is he anybody? No? Did you
- 8:01know? I came down here to tell you the Odel's at the house came
- 8:05in just that you left. I got to might be searching for him?
- 8:07How long after I left the Hodell show up? About five minutes, I
- 8:13could say, I want to talk to that man. Okay, hey,
- 8:16what a minute? The ring files left? Ring? What about it gone?
- 8:20I had my pocket that I came down here. But it's gone now,
- 8:22So that's what you're a sailor? Was after I look that way?
- 8:26Well, let's be getting back fine business. Another ring is missing? Before
- 8:31we can hold on, there's a whole in my coat. Father, Maybe
- 8:35I there it is. I just called the kids, Rob, it's my
- 8:37flat flight. Are you right? That's it? The murderer has missed again?
- 8:43Yeah? Who is it? Hello? Already? This is Nick Carton.
- 8:48I'm going to stall the cycle. Boys, you hope by the way
- 8:52things are going now there maybe no stiper left to stall. Let's get back
- 8:54to the house. I want to talk to Hodell. Well, Carter,
- 9:07did you learn anything from Odell? Oh? I'm pretty sure now he had
- 9:11nothing to do with what's been going on here. You mean he wasn't the
- 9:13one who hits you. No, I'm quite sure he knows nothing about that
- 9:16or about files death. Oh. By the way, card, I want
- 9:20you to meet the other three years. This is cet Or Whythmore, George
- 9:24Oman, and Kurt Studivan for the fireplace. Are you gentlemen? I understand
- 9:28that no one of you men said anything to anybody about the search for the
- 9:31treasure you expected to make here the ninety one. If Brady know what this
- 9:35is all about, jessep Oh, yes, we had to tell the owners
- 9:39of the island what he intended to do. Did you meant to get to
- 9:41anyone, Brady, No, not, that is except for a chap.
- 9:45We used to work here on the island as Odell's system. You mean Charlie
- 9:48Vain Brady, Yes, I thoughtably not the empest of having worked here.
- 9:50There's a man card He worked here on the island up until about six months
- 9:54ago. He's a fanatic on the subject of the co pleasure. Hunted boy
- 9:58every over your head got so he told the treasure it is because he spent
- 10:03so much time looking for it. You think it'd be crazy enough to come
- 10:05out here and start a private war to get hold of it. Nice expectedly
- 10:09quacks of this? All right, we'll see the first were the other napkin
- 10:13ring. Each man has his own ring. Caught it right, and there's
- 10:16no doubt at all. But the treasure is still here on the island.
- 10:18This island hasn't been tenanted for nearly one hundred years except for the caredats It
- 10:24used as a tie up and stopover for the boat working for the fishing company
- 10:28Launted. Wait, he can tell you that that's right, Miss Carter's every
- 10:31reason to believe that stuff is right where the original owners there is. How
- 10:35much does this work in the idea of all something over two millions as far
- 10:39as I can gather, this worth all that? How come the whole island
- 10:41hasn't been done that before this. That's a lot of money. The whole
- 10:45island's practically one big lock. Without some idea of where to look at it
- 10:48would be an impossible job. I see. Well, whether the killer is
- 10:52Charlie Van or someone else is probably on this island right now. The first
- 10:56thing to do is to see that he doesn't get off the island. Now
- 10:58we can catch him. How can we do it? Hodel, you come
- 11:03in here? Please? What do you want? I want you to go
- 11:07down to the dock, take the spark plugs out to beat to the company
- 11:09book and no one can use them. Yes, yes, you and Brady
- 11:13do the same of the boat you came in all right, come on,
- 11:16I'm going to make a tour of the island to be sure. There no
- 11:18weather boat here and we can fit tys until morning. Catch who weathers behind
- 11:22it? Nasty night, very dangerous. I don't care. I'll feel faithful
- 11:28where you are than I would anywhere else. Let's go and no argus.
- 11:43The race shop a little more comfortable out here. Well, there's the horse
- 11:48Patsy right up there and almost around the island, and we haven't gone a
- 11:50trace of another boat. Maybe wait, look, Patsy on this rock should
- 11:58have been a boat, have you read right? And the only possible explanation
- 12:01of those swape mines and the bonifilds man, I think that's no board here
- 12:05now. The killer may have left the island already, I certainly hope so
- 12:07I've had enough for one night if he got down in the well, what
- 12:22happens now? A killer loose on the island on a black stormy night promised
- 12:26more trouble, and that stream founded as if the promise has been fulfilled?
- 12:31How is Nick going to find a murderer of one and possibly two men before
- 12:33he does any more killings? And what's the wriddle of the old thorny treasure?
- 12:37We'll see you in just a moment. Whatever your family's preference may be
- 12:43in home decoration, your home is bound to be more beautiful when it flores
- 12:48are well kept in shining and with linaxelf polishing whack, floors always looked there
- 12:52very best, without tiresome robbing or polishing. Yes, with Linax self polishing
- 12:58whack, which is simply white jar, your floors are handsome for a long
- 13:01time because Linux self polishing wax. Guys, to a rich, many long
- 13:05lasting finish that really wis thanks to a high content of genuine carnaval wax,

- 13:16What's more, Linax self polishing wax is easy to keep lovely or you whip
- 13:20surface. There's a way in a twinkling with a damp cloth. And Linux
- 13:24self polishing wax is the anti skid floor finish, or the underwriter's laboratories have
- 13:30proved by tests that wood, linoleum and rubber tile floors are actually less slippery
- 13:35after Linux self polishing waxes and applies. He's good to ask for Linux l
- 13:39I M jack X Linux self polishing wax. You will find all three great
- 13:46Linax homes i is and Keens homes the miracle wall finish have hardware, paint
- 13:50and department doors everywhere. And now back to our story. We left tacking
- 14:05patting me on the beach here the house running for the mysterious killer. Suddenly
- 14:11come on, I came from the house. Yes, here that scream dugd
- 14:16I was just singing my boat and he coming ready, Yes, he landed
- 14:24on his head. Yes he's dead. All right? My god, Gourvan
- 14:28dead too? What's going on here? Wind up? What happened? And
- 14:33your talking to one? Why? Please nobody? What do you know about
- 14:39this? I was just coming back from my boat when I heard the scream.
- 14:41I looked up and sill against the sky with two men on the roof.
- 14:46One of them pushed the other over the edge and screamed again as he
- 14:50fell. It was awful. There's anything else. I was looking at the
- 14:54body when I heard the back doors land. Then is it somebody ran off
- 14:56through the bush? Oh? Why didn't you go after him? After a
- 15:01murderer? And the talk on arm? You think I'm crazy? I don't
- 15:03know. What do you know about? Servants there? Why we uh?
- 15:07Servant Almond and I were waiting in the living room for you and Jess have
- 15:09been ready to come back. Suvan got the flight idea that he's go up
- 15:13to the roof and see if you could see anything. But later we heard
- 15:16him yell and we shot up the stairs and see what was wrong? You
- 15:18hear anything? After he was killed? Why we we thuk? We heard
- 15:22something dash out and down the backstairs and out the back door. Now you
- 15:26gotta get servant's body inside. I'm gonna have a look at the roope.
- 15:30See what I can find there. Come on, Patty, right, Nick,
- 15:45find anything useful, cutter? No tracks in the ground outside that mean
- 15:48anything grounds to cut up. There's a sort of stone platform that what there
- 15:52in the roof that the Tories must have used as a lookout platform. The
- 15:54faint marks of two men up there, but still not good enough to help
- 15:58it anything. There's no question and word that stoven up was thrown from there.
- 16:00Well what do we do now we had more guns that success, We
- 16:04all get out and try to find whoever's doing this killing? Is there only
- 16:07one gun mine? That's hopeless? Nick? Are you ready to try to
- 16:11solve the my favorite contactic? But the killer got away the stove in a
- 16:14ring. No, no, he didn't go it got even get it to
- 16:17me to keep on? Oh well, we still have our four rings.
- 16:21I'm murdering friends, having all this trouble for nothing, And let's get started,
- 16:23all right, let me have the rings you acada all for good?
- 16:29Now, let's see mm hmm. Each of these rings has a different conscription.
- 16:34Here's ma dear long if I go back and eat with supper, I
- 16:37ain't had time to eat Yetnam getting the light Holry, No, No,
- 16:41I don't go right ahead. We let you know if we need you.
- 16:44Thank you. The only answer to this is that the inscriptions and the rings
- 16:48constitute the cipher itself. The only question is how to our rings are rings?
- 16:52To get the correct interpretation? Nick, did you notice that they're a
- 16:56little notches stiled in the edges of the rings. The range of the notches
- 17:00on both the top and bottom and each other two has them only have money.
- 17:04I believe that if the rings are put together with the knatches matching up,
- 17:07we'll be heading in the right direction. I mean stacked in one on
- 17:11top of the other exactly, with the notches matching up in each case,
- 17:15the range with the single notches will go on the top and the bottom expectively.
- 17:21I did, I said, now you know that, passy. There
- 17:27are two lines of inscription on each ring. Okay, And from the uneven
- 17:32way the letters on the inscriptions are engraved. And I feel sure it was
- 17:34done so that with the rings stacked on top of each other the way you
- 17:37have them, certain of the letters and the inscriptions will come directly under each
- 17:41other. There are only three or four places where they do that, And
- 17:44as a matter of fact, Betsy, there is only one place if you
- 17:47look closely. But the letters are really directly under each other. Like these
- 17:52letters down as I read them. Okay, h A E E nl I
- 18:02three Did you say three? Yes? One of the rings has the date
- 18:04seventeen thirty and the second line, Oh yes, wait a minute, right
- 18:08under the three on the bottom ring is the one of the numbers. Looks
- 18:11like, yeah, there's two fifty one. Write that down too. Do
- 18:18you think that's part of it? I believe it is. And what have
- 18:21I got there? Nothing that makes sense? H A E T M l
- 18:26I three two fifty one. Maybe that's in cyber tooth I maybe. Oh,
- 18:36we've got the right ring on the top and the light ring on the
- 18:37bottom. And not to prove that, well, we've got the two rings
- 18:41from the center. It was long harder. We just transposed them. Only
- 18:47of course, you know, way ahead of me. Refers to a book,
- 18:51a book just as well known to those old toys as it is to
- 18:52us. How why can I find a copy of it? Here? Ah?
- 18:56That Hodell, he has quite a collection of books in the shack.
- 18:59He must have a copy there? What make do you think I'm as long
- 19:02to get the book? Is like Hodel, Hodel, I know the symptoms
- 19:25stick line, hode Hodel. Let's know us a two part gone? Yes?
- 19:32What what? What prisoned you? To? Just see him? Model
- 19:37going too fast? Hodel? Can you tell me who did it? Y
- 19:44s he did it? House m h uh oh, poor fella. So
- 20:00that's it. I should have known them, conajos, what's happened? Why
- 20:17you call him outstairs? Went out this way the window? What happened to
- 20:26kill it? Oh? My my? He came up here not waiting for
- 20:33it here shut out said that's killed the instantly hold on then shot arm,
- 20:44went out the window, climbed down the big tree outside, and ran off
- 20:48into the wood up coming here alright, Mark Bubble, I just thought you
- 20:55know what the wings the rings were that you hurtad What happened? Betty?
- 21:06I was sitting here waiting for you, when suddenly the ceiling showing not me,
- 21:10somebody hit you. I guess I didn't see anybody here. Who makes
- 21:17the ringhig gone? But it makes no difference. I have the notes we
- 21:18made. I took them with me to be sure. I guess whoever hit
- 21:22me. He wanted the rings for himself. Did I hit the shooting,
- 21:25Yes, you did. Bauman was dead and Brady shot through the arm.
- 21:30Did you see a jack in time to catch the murder? No, Brady
- 21:33says, he went out the window and down the tree. I'm going outside.
- 21:34It seems I can find anything that might be a clue, I think,
- 21:48so I'll tell me what happened here. But we were all sitting in
- 21:52the living room when Brady heard something outside in the hall. He went out
- 21:56to look, and a moment later we heard him call out to some of
- 21:59the stump Omen ran outs, and they both dashed up the stairs. There
- 22:02were several shots, and I called you you know the rat, I say,
- 22:06Ready, Did he got a look at his face? Why? No?
- 22:07No, I didn't dark in the hall, and I couldn't write,
- 22:11nor I never mind, never mind, that's got finished with his cipher.
- 22:14But god, they shouldn't we do something about this for that? On this
- 22:17time? Ciper comes first. Oh, by the way, I found Matt
- 22:21Hodel dead in his shack, poisoned. Somebody put Splick nine in this food.
- 22:26Oh, Dale's dead. Why would anyone want to kill him? Matt
- 22:30didn't have any of the rings, right, Hodell was killed for an entirely
- 22:33different reason. Well, now let's get this cipher finished. I found this
- 22:37book and Ordell's shack, and it gave me the answer. That copy of
- 22:41him. Let told you where these he was bad it? Did you remember,
- 22:44Patsy, We had the letters H A E T M L I three
- 22:48two five one. If it transpose the two rings in the middle of the
- 22:52stack, we made you get these letters H A M L E T one
- 22:57three. That's wonderful. Hamlet's at one then three line two fifty one Jaddy
- 23:06exactly, that'sy. I looked it up, and the clue gives us this
- 23:08line. Deep in the cellar sleep for our remains, and the pleasure is
- 23:14buried in the teller of his house, apparently. So let's see what we
- 23:17can find down there. We'll probably have some hunting to do around here,
- 23:32and it shouldn't take too long. Hey, hey, don't shine that light
- 23:34in my eyes. I can't see. Oh sorry, Brady, now we'll
- 23:38see you. So you don't break God one not pretty out. He was
- 23:44trying to kill me. It would have heard. I was getting too close
- 23:45to his secret. His secret Brady is the murderer. We've been looking for
- 23:49Rady, But what about Charlie Dean Vain existed only and Brady's imagination. He's
- 23:53been dead sixth months. Vain dead, yes, and you'll find a bed
- 23:57in that corner of the bere where Brady buried him after he killed him.
- 24:02How do you know where he's buried? When I flashed the light in your
- 24:03faces a moment ago, I saw how Brady was looking naturally. He looked
- 24:07toward the spot which held a secret. It was a flat I might acidentally
- 24:10stumble on the body if we started digging down here. But how in the
- 24:12world did you know that Dane was dead and buried there? Odell lived long
- 24:17enough to give me a clue of that, and with when I already had
- 24:19figured out it all made sense. That's why Brady killed Adele to keep him
- 24:25from talking at the youthy incredible count second nightmare, except that it makes sense.
- 24:30Vain and Brady together found the treasure when they were working here six months
- 24:33ago. Brady killed Vaine so we could have the treasure for himself. Then,
- 24:37when you Jessep organized this trip to solve the Napkin Ring cipher code.
- 24:41He determined to kill you all up so as to prevent your discovering it before
- 24:45you knew he was here on the island. He killed Pyle, then went
- 24:48out again and came in the dock. It was Brady who who served it
- 24:52off the roof, and later knocked Patsy out and killed Ulman. He also
- 24:56shot himself. The powder marks on his sleeve proved that incredible, absolutely incredible.
- 25:02Well, now let's find the treasure. But if the treasure is buried
- 25:15in the cellar, Nick, what are we looking up here on the roof
- 25:18for? Oh, didn't I tell you Pattin The treasure isn't buried down there,
- 25:22it's up here up here. But the quotation from Hamletcotta that said,
- 25:26the quotation I read you was not the right ones. Jes Now, let's
- 25:30see you see those large flat stones forming the platform on that side. Yes,
- 25:34count off the first eleven and look the next one up. Lift it
- 25:37off down here? I doubt that. Go ahead, yes, try get
- 25:42my hand with him more. All right, if you say so, you
- 25:45seem to be right about everything so far, even the panting James body where
- 25:48you said it? Now as night is coming, will you look at that
- 25:56the old Tory treasure. Look at those gorgeous rings and neplaces and gold cough
- 26:00yessy. If Jesip is right, you're looking at about two million dollars worth
- 26:06of golden jewels. But how did you know it was here under this particular
- 26:10tongue, godder Because the quotation from Hamlet, the correct quotation, that's the
- 26:14one I made up to Pool Brady, reads like this upon the platform fixed
- 26:18eleven and twelve. There was no other solution. Principal, In just a
- 26:33moment, nicking passy will bring you a preview of next week's exciting teeth.

- 28:00next week? And next week? Ken? I want to tell you about
- 28:03a man who was killed by an unknown poison and apparently without opportunity or murtive,
- 28:08four people were gathered for a discussion on Hindu philosophy, and suddenly one
- 28:11of them fell over dead, none of the other. Isn't it any idea
- 28:15what had happened? Sound was pretty blind to me. How did it work
- 28:18out? What clues there were were uncovered accidentally and unexpected me and it wasn't
- 28:22until the second murder that things became clear. And even then nobody but Nick
- 28:26could figure out what anything meant. So he got the right answers and the
- 28:30murderer. H what's the name of the story, Nick, I'll call it
- 28:33Pausing of the Past or the Mystery of the Vedanta Killing. And that's all
- 28:37about that for now. Along, So long everybody, and so long to
- 28:41you both Nick and Fancy. We'll be looking forward to seeing you again next
- 28:45week. Next week, at the same time, listen to another curious experience
- 29:08of Nick Cotter Master Detective and titled or With a Pass or Nick Carter The
- 29:15Mystery of the Danta Killing. Nick Carter, Master Detective is featured in Street

- 30:00speaking for the thousands of Linux dealers all over America and saying, so long
- 30:04until next week. This is usual welcome back. Well, not a whole
- 30:26lot to say on this one, just your standard mystery with buried treasure throwing
- 30:32it. I was kind of surprised that the descendants of these tories would be
- 30:37in the United States because during the Revolution most stories had to flee for other
- 30:44parts. Now on to some listener comments and feedback, and I found this
- 30:48on the Let George Do It podcast posted just on April fourteenth, regarding Let
- 30:56George Do It. I found this light sorry to see it. Oh well,
- 31:02thankfully you have the archive there, and who knows, we may come
