- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, your home for
- 0:06Speaker 1: deer hunting news, stories and strategies, and now your host,
- 0:12Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon. Welcome to the Wired to Hunt Podcast. I'm
- 0:18Speaker 1: your host, Mark Kenyan, and this is episode number three thirteen,
- 0:22Speaker 1: and today on the show, it is November Eve and
- 0:28Speaker 1: we are joined by longtime Midwest white Tail contributor Jared
- 0:31Speaker 1: Mills to talk all things November and rut hunting. All right,
- 0:44Speaker 1: welcome to another episode of the Wired to Hunt podcast,
- 0:48Speaker 1: brought to you by on X, and today in the show,
- 0:52Speaker 1: we are preparing for the white Tail Rutt. It's the
- 0:56Speaker 1: super bowl of our season. It's sweet, sweet November. My
- 1:02Speaker 1: juices are flowing, Dan, or are yours? Are you feeling this? Yeah? Man, Um,
- 1:07Speaker 1: it's kind of weird. I have this calm feeling as
- 1:10Speaker 1: opposed to in years past where it's got to be age.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Yeah maybe I dude, I won't. I won't disagree with you.
- 1:18Speaker 1: I mean a lot changed over the past five to
- 1:21Speaker 1: ten years and the way I approach things an inter calm.
- 1:25Speaker 1: You're kind of zen. You're kind of zen these days,
- 1:27Speaker 1: Mr Johnson. That's what I think is happening. Yeah, Or
- 1:31Speaker 1: it could be like brain damage. It could probably brain damage.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Maybe two kids, kids exactly. Yeah. But but I'm still
- 1:42Speaker 1: young and youthful and full of vibracy. So I'm excited
- 1:47Speaker 1: for the ret Oh yeah, dude, I mean I'm excited,
- 1:52Speaker 1: but in just a different way, you know what I mean,
- 1:55Speaker 1: Just like I know what I have to do and
- 1:57Speaker 1: I got I just have to go out and do it.
- 2:01Speaker 1: It's business time. It's just business time. Dan's gonna go
- 2:05Speaker 1: out there, He's gonna do his job. He's gonna execute
- 2:07Speaker 1: the game plan. He's gonna come back and say it's easy,
- 2:10Speaker 1: that's how you do it. I'm thinking, I'm thinking that's
- 2:12Speaker 1: that's your plan, right. I hope, I hope it's that easier. Yeah.
- 2:18Speaker 1: Often times it's seemed to go that way. But um,
- 2:21Speaker 1: but that's what I want to talk about today. Dan, Um,
- 2:24Speaker 1: we're gonna here in a minute. I'm gonna have Jared
- 2:26Speaker 1: Mills hop on the line and chat rut hunting strategy
- 2:30Speaker 1: and Jared is um he works for Midwest White Tail
- 2:33Speaker 1: over there with Bill Winky. Um. He's kind of in
- 2:36Speaker 1: your neck of the woods. Yeah, and I will boy,
- 2:38Speaker 1: you guys are chasing the same deer. Probably. Um. He's
- 2:42Speaker 1: a he's an avid white tail bowl hunter. He's got
- 2:45Speaker 1: a whole lot of experience himself. But I've always kind
- 2:47Speaker 1: of thought that someone over there at Midwest white Tail
- 2:50Speaker 1: or a similar role whatever really interesting opportunity to learn
- 2:56Speaker 1: from a wide base of people. Because right there's all
- 2:58Speaker 1: these different people filming for them, they're getting all these
- 3:00Speaker 1: different intel reports, or they're looking at all these different hunts.
- 3:04Speaker 1: I gotta believe that gives him a wide base of
- 3:06Speaker 1: of intelligence and experience to pull from and to kind
- 3:09Speaker 1: of learn from. I think that's that's a pretty cool thing.
- 3:11Speaker 1: So when he hops on here, we're just going to
- 3:14Speaker 1: dive into everything he knows about hunting the rut, all
- 3:16Speaker 1: his plans, his experiences, his strategies, what he's gonna be
- 3:20Speaker 1: doing this year, what he's learned over the course of
- 3:23Speaker 1: all these years watching all these other guys doing it,
- 3:25Speaker 1: what he's learned from Bill um who who just killed
- 3:29Speaker 1: a giant buck himself. Um. So that's the game plan
- 3:32Speaker 1: for the main part of the show. But for a pregame,
- 3:35Speaker 1: I thought, Dan that you and I should do a
- 3:36Speaker 1: couple of things. Number One, we got to catch up
- 3:39Speaker 1: just a little bit on what we've been doing out
- 3:41Speaker 1: on our own recent hunts. Um. I know you've got
- 3:44Speaker 1: to spend some time in the woods. I got back
- 3:46Speaker 1: from my boundary Wires hunt a handful days ago, and
- 3:49Speaker 1: they've been hunting on the back forty here recently. Um.
- 3:52Speaker 1: And then I want to talk a lot about our
- 3:54Speaker 1: rut hunting plans ourselves, what our rutcation strategies are, what
- 3:59Speaker 1: we're doing, UM, how we're gonna get it done. So
- 4:02Speaker 1: that's that's what I got in store. Do you think
- 4:04Speaker 1: that that will work? That'll work? Man? So quick question.
- 4:08Speaker 1: Have you already covered the because I have been m
- 4:12Speaker 1: i a on social as far as looking at other
- 4:16Speaker 1: people's stuff. Are you gonna put out a podcast strictly
- 4:19Speaker 1: about boundary water strip? Yes, we haven't done it yet.
- 4:24Speaker 1: We recorded it, we just haven't released it yet. We
- 4:26Speaker 1: recorded right after the trip. Um. But then I've realized
- 4:30Speaker 1: we had a bunch of story focused podcasts and with
- 4:34Speaker 1: the rut hitting, I just felt like people need a
- 4:37Speaker 1: strategy episode in here too, to prep you for that
- 4:40Speaker 1: Super Bowl. So there's been a lot of people asking me.
- 4:43Speaker 1: We wanted to know how the hunt went. They want
- 4:44Speaker 1: to hear it. Um, bear with you just a little
- 4:47Speaker 1: bit We're gonna hold onto it just a little bit
- 4:49Speaker 1: here so we can get you some tips and tactics
- 4:50Speaker 1: to help you with these next couple of weeks of hunting,
- 4:53Speaker 1: and then we're gonna release the Boundary Waters recap and
- 4:55Speaker 1: you get the full story. Um. I'm also gonna start
- 4:57Speaker 1: sharing some stuff on social media. UM, so I will
- 5:01Speaker 1: share kind of what's going on. But but Dan, the
- 5:03Speaker 1: the high level overview is that it was a tough hunt,
- 5:07Speaker 1: but it was an amazing experience. I mean, we had
- 5:10Speaker 1: the last we got to spend time and some of
- 5:13Speaker 1: the most stunning country that I've that I've been in.
- 5:19Speaker 1: I mean, this place is really cool. Um. I cannot
- 5:23Speaker 1: recommend it enough as far as a place to go
- 5:26Speaker 1: and see and and hunt or fish or camp and paddle.
- 5:30Speaker 1: I mean, it's the real deal. So it was a
- 5:35Speaker 1: great trip. Um. But now now back at it in
- 5:39Speaker 1: Michigan and trying to get it done here, and it's
- 5:42Speaker 1: been it's been a little bit of a struggle fest
- 5:44Speaker 1: here in Michigan since I got back from that trip.
- 5:46Speaker 1: I I guess maybe I'll just fill you into what
- 5:50Speaker 1: I've been doing here since I got back. Well, the
- 5:53Speaker 1: uh so, here's what I caught so far. Is there
- 5:56Speaker 1: are some There is a little bit of fresh shine
- 5:58Speaker 1: on the back forty, but not a lot of movement. Yes,
- 6:02Speaker 1: that's a pretty good synopsis of it. Um. I think
- 6:06Speaker 1: the last time we chatted about the back forty in detail,
- 6:09Speaker 1: it was like leading into the season, right, um. And
- 6:12Speaker 1: I had all these concerns about all the commotion we
- 6:15Speaker 1: made in August. I mean we were in there for
- 6:17Speaker 1: several weeks with four or five six people in and out,
- 6:20Speaker 1: in and out doing all sorts of crap. So August
- 6:23Speaker 1: was a mess. And then mid September we came in
- 6:26Speaker 1: and we squirrel hunted the whole thing. And I was
- 6:27Speaker 1: a little worried about that because it's right in the
- 6:30Speaker 1: middle of when I usually like to keep a property untouched. UM.
- 6:34Speaker 1: So I had concerns, but ended up getting in there
- 6:38Speaker 1: hunting early season a few days, had a guest out,
- 6:41Speaker 1: had a great time with Luke and we killed the dough.
- 6:43Speaker 1: He killed the dough while we sat together, and that
- 6:45Speaker 1: was a really cool experience. But still never got eyes
- 6:47Speaker 1: on a mature buck except four. Actually, I think I
- 6:50Speaker 1: mentioned this in one of the intros, but if I didn't,
- 6:53Speaker 1: when I walked into I tell you this, when I
- 6:55Speaker 1: walked in for my very first hunt on the property,
- 6:57Speaker 1: I bumped a big buck that was bettered right on
- 6:59Speaker 1: the edge of our property. They tell you that, No,
- 7:01Speaker 1: I didn't know that. Yeah, So, hiking in for the
- 7:04Speaker 1: first time, I thought I was going around in a
- 7:05Speaker 1: safe route, walking on the edge of our old field,
- 7:09Speaker 1: and was like a big open stand of timber, not
- 7:12Speaker 1: betting country, like the kind of stuff that there should
- 7:14Speaker 1: not be a buck better than. And this big wide
- 7:16Speaker 1: buck jumps up twenty yards away from me and runs
- 7:19Speaker 1: off into the timber. Um because that was a surprise.
- 7:22Speaker 1: It was this wide eight pointer that we've been getting
- 7:25Speaker 1: some pictures of now. Um, so bad news we bumped him.
- 7:28Speaker 1: Good news is like, okay, there's a mature buck out here.
- 7:30Speaker 1: So that was nice. Um. Since that point, hunted a
- 7:35Speaker 1: few more times. Still haven't seen the mature buck. Um,
- 7:38Speaker 1: but have gotten pictures of three deer, two deer that
- 7:41Speaker 1: are definitely four or older, and one deer that's maybe
- 7:45Speaker 1: three maybe four. Um big body deer ones that wide
- 7:49Speaker 1: eight he's an old deer. You can just tell. He's
- 7:51Speaker 1: got a tank of a body on him. Um, not
- 7:54Speaker 1: a huge you know, set of antlers on, but a
- 7:56Speaker 1: cool wide buck. The second one is a tall and
- 8:00Speaker 1: eight pointer. He's another cool one big body. And then
- 8:04Speaker 1: this is for you, Dan, there's another funky buck. He's
- 8:07Speaker 1: a funky nine pointer. One side like a small one's
- 8:10Speaker 1: got a small five point side. Then the other is
- 8:12Speaker 1: like a big four point side. So I'm looking at
- 8:15Speaker 1: this deer and I was going to call him the
- 8:16Speaker 1: lop side of nine. And then I started thinking, I
- 8:18Speaker 1: got a weird nine pointer. I know, a weird nine
- 8:22Speaker 1: finger guy. I think it's time to finally name a
- 8:26Speaker 1: buck after you. Oh Man, I really apprecid. Is he
- 8:28Speaker 1: a three? He's a three year old? Right, he's a
- 8:30Speaker 1: three or four year old? Three or four year old old?
- 8:33Speaker 1: I think on on Instagram you were asking people what
- 8:37Speaker 1: you thought that the age of that deer? Uh was right?
- 8:41Speaker 1: Whether he was three or four? Well, that there's a
- 8:43Speaker 1: different one that I was asking about that, But this
- 8:46Speaker 1: was what I was asking for name ideas on well
- 8:50Speaker 1: the the number. First off, I'm flattered. I really appreciate it,
- 8:53Speaker 1: you know, giving me some week nine pointer and I
- 8:56Speaker 1: gave you like a boot and crockett, because that's right,
- 9:00Speaker 1: that's right. I forgot I forgot for a second, but
- 9:03Speaker 1: that he's a cool buck. I know he is pretty funky.
- 9:07Speaker 1: But I'll tell you what that other um buck that
- 9:10Speaker 1: you took a picture of and posted the age question
- 9:14Speaker 1: one the age question. If you put your thumb over
- 9:16Speaker 1: that deer's back half his like back legs, I would
- 9:20Speaker 1: say four year old. You put your thumb over his
- 9:22Speaker 1: front shoulders, I would say three year old. It's crazy
- 9:25Speaker 1: that like his it's almost like his body doesn't belong together.
- 9:30Speaker 1: He's a funky one, he's a cool buck. Um he's
- 9:34Speaker 1: a really nice Michigan deer. And that's uh that one.
- 9:37Speaker 1: I don't know what I'm gonna do. Because in the
- 9:38Speaker 1: summer I was seeing him, you know, on the bean fields,
- 9:40Speaker 1: and I was like, oh, he's probably a three year old.
- 9:42Speaker 1: And then I started looking at the fall pictures of him,
- 9:46Speaker 1: and a couple of the pictures he looks like he's
- 9:48Speaker 1: got a tank of a body. I'm like, jeez, that
- 9:50Speaker 1: doesn't look like a three year old to me. So
- 9:52Speaker 1: I don't know, Um, that's on the same that's not
- 9:54Speaker 1: on the back forty. That one's on the same property
- 9:56Speaker 1: where Tran is. So I'm unsure about what to do
- 10:00Speaker 1: with him. Um, if I see him in person, if
- 10:02Speaker 1: he looks like a tank, I might have a hard
- 10:04Speaker 1: time passing on him. But but trans really the one
- 10:07Speaker 1: I want there, So it'll be it'll be a game
- 10:09Speaker 1: time decision. But yeah, yeah, I know. On the Back
- 10:15Speaker 1: forty though, it's the it's Dan, it's the wide eight
- 10:18Speaker 1: and the tall eight. And we still haven't seen him.
- 10:21Speaker 1: We got some pictures. Um. We hunted this past weekend
- 10:25Speaker 1: Doug dir and I don't know if you know Doug,
- 10:26Speaker 1: but Dougs a friend of Steve's, Steve Ronella's, we went
- 10:31Speaker 1: and hunted caribou together in Alaska. He's he does some
- 10:35Speaker 1: really cool things in Wisconsin. He does some consulting and
- 10:37Speaker 1: land management work, and so he came out to the
- 10:39Speaker 1: Back forty to take a look, see what you know,
- 10:42Speaker 1: see what we're doing, share some thoughts and some ideas
- 10:44Speaker 1: for what we can do moving forward. So it's a
- 10:46Speaker 1: great visit. But tough hunting, man. I mean we saw
- 10:51Speaker 1: he saw one deer the whole weekend and I saw
- 10:54Speaker 1: one year and a half old buck and a button buck.
- 10:58Speaker 1: That was it. I mean, it was brutal. It was frustrating.
- 11:01Speaker 1: I couldn't believe I mean this, Yeah, there was the
- 11:05Speaker 1: middle day of the hunt was just basically a monsoon,
- 11:08Speaker 1: So that was a bummer. But I know, I know
- 11:12Speaker 1: they're in the area, like I know there's good bucks
- 11:14Speaker 1: in the area. Interestingly, one of the neighbors texted me
- 11:17Speaker 1: a picture of a really big buck, a nice buck
- 11:19Speaker 1: that just got killed off the road, like someone hit
- 11:22Speaker 1: it with a car. And I looked at this picture,
- 11:24Speaker 1: I'm like, holy smokes, that's a giant. He's got these
- 11:27Speaker 1: really unique brow times that kick out to the outside.
- 11:30Speaker 1: And then that's that flipped a switch in my mind.
- 11:34Speaker 1: One night in the summer, I snuck out on this
- 11:36Speaker 1: property and uh, there's bean field on our neighbors. So
- 11:39Speaker 1: I could sit on my property and watch the bean
- 11:41Speaker 1: field on the neighbors And right as I walked up
- 11:43Speaker 1: to the edge of the field, the bachelor groups of
- 11:45Speaker 1: bucks were going a bachelor group of bucks were going
- 11:48Speaker 1: over the hillside, and I pulled up the camera and
- 11:50Speaker 1: just caught like a several second glimpse of this buck
- 11:54Speaker 1: going over the hill and it was that deer. I
- 11:56Speaker 1: went and watched that video clip again and it was
- 11:58Speaker 1: that buck that just got killed car. So that's a
- 12:02Speaker 1: bum or one of the local big mature bucks got
- 12:05Speaker 1: smoked and he was bigger than I realized. Um, So
- 12:08Speaker 1: I know they're around. It just hasn't worked out on
- 12:11Speaker 1: the farm yet. But we're gonna start back again in November.
- 12:14Speaker 1: I'll be back out there again, and uh, I gotta
- 12:16Speaker 1: believe something will come through at that point. So so
- 12:19Speaker 1: that's what's going on the back forty and then are
- 12:21Speaker 1: they still not turnal? Mostly? Mostly There's been a few
- 12:25Speaker 1: edge of daylight pictures by the wide a pointer um.
- 12:28Speaker 1: Actually some some movement early in the month. Um, But
- 12:31Speaker 1: recently that wide eight has been coming into bed. It
- 12:34Speaker 1: looks like past one of my cameras, just at daylight
- 12:38Speaker 1: or just before it. So I think he's betting in
- 12:40Speaker 1: that area I've been talking about called the honey Hoole Um,
- 12:44Speaker 1: this really cool zone on a ridge system with a
- 12:46Speaker 1: bunch of cedars and native prairie grasses. Um. So I
- 12:49Speaker 1: think he's in there a decent amount of time. So
- 12:52Speaker 1: when I get back out there in a handful of days, UM,
- 12:55Speaker 1: I'm gonna hit that area hard. So I'm excited, excited
- 12:58Speaker 1: to see what goes on there. But then on the
- 13:00Speaker 1: other spots, you know on the on the main Michigan
- 13:03Speaker 1: property trans there. I hunted once for him, took a
- 13:06Speaker 1: stab after him after the Boundary Waters hunt. Um been
- 13:09Speaker 1: getting some more pictures of him on the edges of daylight,
- 13:12Speaker 1: not quite moving in daylight. Uh. So it took a stab,
- 13:15Speaker 1: pushed in deeper into the property closer where I think
- 13:18Speaker 1: he beds and hung, did a hanging hunt. Didn't see
- 13:22Speaker 1: much at all. Um, But starting tonight, I'm gonna get
- 13:25Speaker 1: back after him. I've got the next five six days
- 13:29Speaker 1: to uh to hunt that property. So I'm excited to
- 13:34Speaker 1: excited to start the cat and mouse with him now
- 13:36Speaker 1: in earnest Um. So the super high level. That's that's
- 13:39Speaker 1: kind of what's been going on here. Boundary Waters, a
- 13:42Speaker 1: little bit of time in the back forty. Now I'm
- 13:44Speaker 1: gonna be hunting the other farm for a few days. Um. Uh,
- 13:48Speaker 1: we can talk. Are you going to manage this? I mean,
- 13:51Speaker 1: how are you going to manage your your time between
- 13:53Speaker 1: your home farm and the properties that you have closer
- 13:56Speaker 1: to where you live and then the back forty. So
- 13:59Speaker 1: it's kind of it's it's kind of just locked in
- 14:03Speaker 1: stone with the camera crew schedule. So basically we had
- 14:08Speaker 1: to schedule when the camera crew can come out and
- 14:10Speaker 1: film stuff on the back forty. And you know what,
- 14:13Speaker 1: We're having different guests come out now for some hunts
- 14:15Speaker 1: on the property too, So that's just kind of scheduled.
- 14:18Speaker 1: So you know those when those dates come, I have
- 14:21Speaker 1: to go and I have to hunt the back forty
- 14:23Speaker 1: in those dates, and when they're not here, then I
- 14:24Speaker 1: can hunt my other spots. Um. In a perfect world,
- 14:28Speaker 1: I wish that, you know, we had a camera crew
- 14:29Speaker 1: that was here that could just you know, when the
- 14:32Speaker 1: conditions are right or when Intel tells me I should
- 14:34Speaker 1: be hunting the back for it, I could just go
- 14:35Speaker 1: and do it, and then when the conditions are right
- 14:38Speaker 1: in my other spots, I could go hunt those spots. Um.
- 14:41Speaker 1: That's just not the case. So I'm kind of stuck
- 14:45Speaker 1: hunting at certain times based off of the schedule, which
- 14:48Speaker 1: is it's the only It is what it is, So
- 14:51Speaker 1: you can't you're not gonna hunt without a camera guy
- 14:53Speaker 1: this year, or you're gonna have a camera guy the
- 14:55Speaker 1: whole time on the back fort you on the back portal.
- 14:57Speaker 1: So so anything on the back for you is filmed
- 14:59Speaker 1: for that ship. Oh all the other stuff is just
- 15:01Speaker 1: me doing my own thing. UM. So so that's the case.
- 15:05Speaker 1: So I've got, you know, five or six days now
- 15:07Speaker 1: on my own where I can hunt my regular spots,
- 15:10Speaker 1: and then the camera group comes back and then we've
- 15:12Speaker 1: got like a seven day period or something like that
- 15:15Speaker 1: that's all back forty and then I'll have another six
- 15:19Speaker 1: days to hunt on my other spots on my own
- 15:22Speaker 1: before guns season. So I've got to five or six
- 15:25Speaker 1: day windows to try to kill trand on my own
- 15:28Speaker 1: UM and then that big back forty chunk in the middle,
- 15:32Speaker 1: so we'll see. I mean, I wish I had the
- 15:33Speaker 1: flexibility to be able to hit it when you need to,
- 15:37Speaker 1: you know. You know how that is. Some days you
- 15:38Speaker 1: want to be here, some days you want to be there.
- 15:40Speaker 1: Some days the window right for this zone, some days
- 15:42Speaker 1: the winds right for the other. UM. That would be
- 15:45Speaker 1: like the best way to hunt this um. But that's
- 15:49Speaker 1: just kind of part of it. It's a new thing.
- 15:52Speaker 1: It's it's a cool opportunity to be able to share
- 15:54Speaker 1: that hunt, and so I try to focus on the
- 15:56Speaker 1: positive and not the potentially negative. But i'd be lying
- 15:59Speaker 1: up in an tell you a stress about you know
- 16:02Speaker 1: how the hunt's gonna go. And the fact that we
- 16:04Speaker 1: haven't seen a single decent buck while hunting yet on
- 16:08Speaker 1: the farm. Um, I know that they're they're around. It's
- 16:11Speaker 1: just hard to have, you know, four guys walking in
- 16:14Speaker 1: and out of a place like this and camera crew
- 16:17Speaker 1: is walking around, and that's just a whole new thing
- 16:19Speaker 1: for me. That adds an interesting wrench in the in
- 16:22Speaker 1: the system. You know, Well, I mean that's out of
- 16:24Speaker 1: your control, right, So why stress about it gets out
- 16:27Speaker 1: of your control. It is what it is, and it's
- 16:29Speaker 1: and it's it's nothing I can complain about because it's
- 16:31Speaker 1: a cool thing. Like it's awesome to be able to
- 16:32Speaker 1: share that story. But you know me, I'm always going
- 16:35Speaker 1: to be stressing about trying to make these hunts workout.
- 16:37Speaker 1: I wanted to. I want to have a great hunt.
- 16:39Speaker 1: I want to see some mature deer. I want you know,
- 16:42Speaker 1: like we all do, I want to have a big
- 16:44Speaker 1: buck out of around right, right. So so I'm inevitably
- 16:48Speaker 1: going to worry a little, but I'm trying to. I'm
- 16:50Speaker 1: trying to channel my inner Dan Johnson, trying to channel
- 16:53Speaker 1: that old man's end and just just let it roll,
- 16:58Speaker 1: let it roll. So so that's at the high level
- 17:00Speaker 1: of what I've got going on. Um, we can talk
- 17:02Speaker 1: a little bit more tactic maybe later. But what about you.
- 17:06Speaker 1: You've got your rutcation coming up soon. You just finished
- 17:10Speaker 1: a nice long weekend hunting. What is happening in Iowa
- 17:13Speaker 1: right now? Yeah? Man? Uh So I just got off
- 17:17Speaker 1: of a Friday, Saturday morning, Saturday night Friday or Sunday
- 17:22Speaker 1: morning hunt and uh, basically I wanted to get out
- 17:27Speaker 1: there and get into a couple real tight spots, make
- 17:31Speaker 1: sure there was a tree stand in there. So I
- 17:33Speaker 1: went in, hung a stand and then I'll just let
- 17:35Speaker 1: it sit there for the rest of the run, right. Uh. Put,
- 17:39Speaker 1: Let's see, I hunted Friday night close to home. Uh.
- 17:42Speaker 1: All I wanted to do was shoot a dough and
- 17:45Speaker 1: I ended up stumbling upon this rub line that I
- 17:49Speaker 1: could see nine different rubs from my tree stand, and
- 17:53Speaker 1: they were they weren't small, They weren't these little like
- 17:56Speaker 1: finger sized rubs. They were like the size of my calf.
- 17:59Speaker 1: And I'm just like Jesus, what like, I'm glad I
- 18:03Speaker 1: know about this spot now, so I could probably come
- 18:05Speaker 1: back here and check it out, you know, if if
- 18:07Speaker 1: things aren't going right on my on my main farm.
- 18:10Speaker 1: But really all I wanted to do was kill it
- 18:12Speaker 1: dough this weekend, and obviously that didn't happen. Easier said
- 18:15Speaker 1: than done. But I just wanted to basically prepare myself
- 18:20Speaker 1: for the next however many weeks, right, So I went it,
- 18:24Speaker 1: set up a couple tree stands, set up a couple
- 18:27Speaker 1: of trail cameras, move some trail cameras around, check some
- 18:30Speaker 1: trail cameras, and I just wanted to go into the
- 18:33Speaker 1: next week prepared and with a little bit more intel
- 18:38Speaker 1: so that I could, uh, you know, just try to
- 18:41Speaker 1: get it done again. So let's talk about the plan
- 18:45Speaker 1: moving forward. You mentioned checking those trail cameras. We we
- 18:49Speaker 1: just texted a little bit about some intel you've gotten. Um,
- 18:53Speaker 1: can we talk about your game plan and what the
- 18:55Speaker 1: trail cameras are telling you? Yeah? Man, So right now,
- 19:00Speaker 1: got two pictures other than one like two or three
- 19:03Speaker 1: weeks ago, right, the daylight one I sent you that
- 19:06Speaker 1: was from like three weeks ago. Right, So that intel
- 19:10Speaker 1: is great to have for next year, but it doesn't
- 19:12Speaker 1: really mean much this year. Um, both bucks are still
- 19:16Speaker 1: nocturnal right now. The two of the two of the
- 19:21Speaker 1: three that I have on the hit list are here.
- 19:25Speaker 1: They're on the farm, which is good, right, but they're nocturnal.
- 19:30Speaker 1: Um and and and let's really quickly recap these three
- 19:34Speaker 1: bucks are which three? Uh, Narlie, Charlie, Spencer new Hearth
- 19:39Speaker 1: and Dork. Dork is the one who old right, He's
- 19:44Speaker 1: not He'll be not He's not in this year, dude,
- 19:46Speaker 1: he's been as long as this podcast has been on
- 19:48Speaker 1: the air. We've been talking about. That is crazy. Yeah,
- 19:53Speaker 1: I know, Um, I don't. I don't know where he
- 19:57Speaker 1: lives straight up. I mean I could just there's only
- 20:02Speaker 1: two trail cameras that he has shown up on the
- 20:05Speaker 1: entire time I've known him. Uh. And then when the
- 20:09Speaker 1: season hits, he relocates. So if I see him, it
- 20:14Speaker 1: will be awesome. If I don't, uh, you know whatever,
- 20:17Speaker 1: the legend, the legend lives on right Uh. But Gnarlie,
- 20:22Speaker 1: Charlie and Spencer new Hearth are close to the same
- 20:26Speaker 1: areas that they were or they're in the same zone.
- 20:29Speaker 1: I guess that they were last year. So um, just
- 20:35Speaker 1: it just be patient, I guess, you know, make sure
- 20:39Speaker 1: that the when I'm checking my trail cameras, I'm looking
- 20:41Speaker 1: for daylight and When I go to check the trail cameras,
- 20:44Speaker 1: I'm looking for good access. Most of the trail cameras
- 20:47Speaker 1: that I'm checking are real low impact, right, so, UM,
- 20:51Speaker 1: at least I get an idea. If they show up
- 20:53Speaker 1: after dark, I can or before dark, I I know
- 20:57Speaker 1: what way they're coming and going. I'm not necessarily gonna
- 21:00Speaker 1: set up close to that trail camera, if that makes sense, right,
- 21:03Speaker 1: Snarli Charlie. He's this special buck that you've been talking
- 21:07Speaker 1: about the last couple of years. Um, you told me
- 21:10Speaker 1: that you think you're zeroing in on where you think
- 21:12Speaker 1: he lives. How how are you figuring that out? Why
- 21:15Speaker 1: do you think you know that? Now? All right, So
- 21:17Speaker 1: we had a conversation. UM uh man, it was this summer, right,
- 21:22Speaker 1: I believe where I said, I'm going to take I'm
- 21:25Speaker 1: going to basically triangulate his position with all the trail
- 21:29Speaker 1: camera data that I have of him every time, every
- 21:32Speaker 1: spot that I have a um A trail camera picture.
- 21:37Speaker 1: I'm gonna put that on a map, and then I'm
- 21:39Speaker 1: gonna take a line and I'm gonna connect all the dots,
- 21:42Speaker 1: and then i'm gonna remove all the inner lines and
- 21:46Speaker 1: everything within that. I guess it really does look like
- 21:50Speaker 1: a triangle is where I feel that I'm going to
- 21:54Speaker 1: have the best shot at killing him, and everything outside
- 21:58Speaker 1: of that I'm probably won't be paying much attention to
- 22:02Speaker 1: this year, all right. So so what that does is
- 22:04Speaker 1: it's just narrowed down the possibilities of where I can
- 22:08Speaker 1: and cannot hunt for you know, the next you know,
- 22:11Speaker 1: for the rut basically, or any terrain features leading like
- 22:15Speaker 1: major terrain features like big ridges, spur ridges, um, you know, draws, drainages, whatever,
- 22:23Speaker 1: big edge that lead into that. He's probably outside of
- 22:28Speaker 1: that that triangle, but you know, coming and going, you know,
- 22:32Speaker 1: through specific terrain features. So I think like that's that's
- 22:39Speaker 1: just where I'm gonna I'm gonna start. Just move in
- 22:42Speaker 1: and um, you know, based off wind direction and access routes,
- 22:47Speaker 1: work my way into these areas and just hunt real
- 22:51Speaker 1: smart as to not blow blow anything out. Look for
- 22:55Speaker 1: dough groups and maybe maybe even set up like I'm
- 22:59Speaker 1: trying to out these dough groups and just see what
- 23:03Speaker 1: see what comes through. Look for fresh sign which is crazy.
- 23:06Speaker 1: There was hardly any active scrapes on my farm, but
- 23:11Speaker 1: the bucks are there because I got trail camera pictures
- 23:14Speaker 1: of them, you know what I mean. So just like
- 23:17Speaker 1: it's like they've stopped. They're not even scraping. I mean
- 23:20Speaker 1: even places where there's a scrape last year every five
- 23:24Speaker 1: feet nothing this year. I don't know. I don't know.
- 23:30Speaker 1: Maybe they're just laying the sign down in different places. Um,
- 23:34Speaker 1: we got to be doing it somewhere. I just I
- 23:36Speaker 1: can't believe they're not exactly. It's just it's really weird.
- 23:39Speaker 1: So and it's not I'm not a I don't typically
- 23:43Speaker 1: hunt on field edges anyway, very rarely. I mean I
- 23:47Speaker 1: will every once in a while, but um, but most
- 23:51Speaker 1: of the stuff is going to be in in the
- 23:53Speaker 1: timber as far as the strategy is concerned. So I'm
- 23:57Speaker 1: looking at the picture you sent me of your properties
- 24:00Speaker 1: you can hunt and the triangle you've made of the
- 24:03Speaker 1: different data points. Okay, let me pull it up once,
- 24:06Speaker 1: go ahead. So basically you've got inside that triangle there
- 24:11Speaker 1: is a large timbered system of draws essentially, would you
- 24:15Speaker 1: say that's accurate? And then there's some crop fields kind
- 24:19Speaker 1: of in a half circle that go from the north
- 24:22Speaker 1: side to the east side to the south side. Um,
- 24:25Speaker 1: so it looks like food is on those three directions,
- 24:28Speaker 1: and then if you go to the west, it's it's
- 24:29Speaker 1: more timber and cover mostly. Do you have any idea
- 24:33Speaker 1: which one of those food sources is getting hit the
- 24:36Speaker 1: most by the does like is there? Do you have
- 24:38Speaker 1: any kind of inkling as to where which side of
- 24:41Speaker 1: this core betting area he's gonna be coming going from?
- 24:45Speaker 1: Is there like a cut corn field it's just getting
- 24:47Speaker 1: hammered right now that you think is going to be
- 24:49Speaker 1: the first place that they're gonna be heading or anything
- 24:51Speaker 1: like that? Or is it? Or is it the opposite?
- 24:53Speaker 1: And he could go any one of those directions any
- 24:55Speaker 1: random night. You've got no clue. Yeah, I think that's
- 24:58Speaker 1: the ladder, is what I as. We think. Um, there's
- 25:02Speaker 1: cattle in the standing corn which are in the uh
- 25:06Speaker 1: pick corn fields, so that keeps them into a certain area.
- 25:10Speaker 1: But here's the thing, dude, there's acorns all over the place,
- 25:15Speaker 1: so it's not like there they need to go out
- 25:19Speaker 1: into the fields. Right. Um, there is a pick bean field,
- 25:23Speaker 1: but the activity that I saw there this weekend is minimal.
- 25:28Speaker 1: They're like I said, there's not even any scrapes on
- 25:31Speaker 1: the However, I did bump a big ten pointer one
- 25:35Speaker 1: I've never seen before out of a standing corn field.
- 25:37Speaker 1: And when I went to go put up a new
- 25:39Speaker 1: trail camera, uh this this weekend. So but that's outside
- 25:44Speaker 1: of his his core area. Interesting, So then let's let's
- 25:53Speaker 1: walk me through the first couple hunts. Then your rutcation
- 25:56Speaker 1: starts this next weekend, like the second something like that. Yeah,
- 26:00Speaker 1: it just depends, right, So historically he's only been on
- 26:04Speaker 1: the property late like mid to late November. However, I'm
- 26:09Speaker 1: getting more intel because I have more trail camera pictures
- 26:12Speaker 1: up of him. Right, But last year the four I
- 26:16Speaker 1: think it was the eighth of November, no internal pictures,
- 26:20Speaker 1: is when he started showing up within that triangle. I
- 26:24Speaker 1: got another trail camera picture in a different location moving
- 26:28Speaker 1: through And I honestly think he his core area is
- 26:33Speaker 1: going to be to the north of that triangle, and
- 26:37Speaker 1: he's coming into the triangle you know, here and there
- 26:41Speaker 1: for a couple of days at a time. I doubt
- 26:43Speaker 1: he really is betting there, but I think there might
- 26:47Speaker 1: be a day or two where he he beds just
- 26:49Speaker 1: because he's chasing it. Dough. It's you know, he lays
- 26:54Speaker 1: down there for a while, not necessarily making it his home,
- 26:57Speaker 1: and then goes outside of the triangle to check, you know,
- 27:02Speaker 1: for a different doe group or go back to bed.
- 27:06Speaker 1: But as far as the next couple hunts, it's it's
- 27:10Speaker 1: basically just going to be checked my trail cameras when
- 27:13Speaker 1: I'm near them, and put my stands in terrain features
- 27:18Speaker 1: that have the most dear movement, right and I'm talking
- 27:22Speaker 1: like your your typical rut features terrain that funnels deer
- 27:26Speaker 1: right as they travel back and forth. Yeah, so so
- 27:29Speaker 1: that and edge and betting. So the stand the stand
- 27:35Speaker 1: location that I guess I sent you in there is
- 27:39Speaker 1: just this nastiness right where there is just it's thick.
- 27:44Speaker 1: It's actually where I found Spencer new Hearth's shed this
- 27:49Speaker 1: spring in that same thicket. Yep. So the goal is
- 27:55Speaker 1: to get and I think he comes through there. I
- 27:58Speaker 1: don't necessarily think he lives there, but the does. There's
- 28:02Speaker 1: a dough group that lives in and around that real
- 28:05Speaker 1: nasty It's basically a rectangle I would say, a hundred
- 28:08Speaker 1: yards by a hundred yards square square of just overgrown thickness,
- 28:15Speaker 1: and I'm gonna hunt on the corners of that square.
- 28:18Speaker 1: That's the goal. So every every direction wind direction, I
- 28:22Speaker 1: have a an access route to get into that so
- 28:26Speaker 1: that when uh, you know, based when a when a
- 28:29Speaker 1: buck comes through there on the down wind side, I
- 28:32Speaker 1: have an opportunity, you know, to see them maybe a
- 28:36Speaker 1: column or or just be be observant, right, And I
- 28:40Speaker 1: have no I have no problem setting back aways because
- 28:44Speaker 1: I think there's a big storm that's gonna knock a
- 28:46Speaker 1: lot of the leafs off leaves off the tree in
- 28:49Speaker 1: the next week. So when I get there this weekend,
- 28:52Speaker 1: there's gonna be a lot less leaves on the tree.
- 28:54Speaker 1: I'm gonna be able to see through the timber a
- 28:56Speaker 1: little bit better and maybe even have a couple of
- 28:58Speaker 1: observation sits that allow me to get an idea of
- 29:03Speaker 1: where the deer are moving but within calling range, if
- 29:07Speaker 1: that makes sense. So if I see him, I can
- 29:09Speaker 1: just wrap see if it, you know, gets gets their attention.
- 29:13Speaker 1: You know, you make you make your example. There is
- 29:15Speaker 1: an important point I think to just re emphasize, especially
- 29:19Speaker 1: for newer hunters that at this time of year, during
- 29:21Speaker 1: the rut, one of the absolute best, most fool proof
- 29:27Speaker 1: strategies to employ during the you know this November time
- 29:30Speaker 1: frame or late October is get downwind of a doe
- 29:33Speaker 1: betting ear because because these bucks they're on their feet
- 29:36Speaker 1: looking for females that are ready to breed, where is
- 29:39Speaker 1: the most likely to place to find a female for
- 29:41Speaker 1: most of the day, it's a doe betting ear. So
- 29:43Speaker 1: if these bucks are cruising looking for a dough that's
- 29:45Speaker 1: ready to go, they're going to check those dope betting areas.
- 29:48Speaker 1: The way they check those dope betting years efficiently is
- 29:51Speaker 1: by walking on the downwind side. So what you're doing
- 29:54Speaker 1: is is like a just tried and true rut hunting tactic.
- 29:58Speaker 1: Hunt the downwind edges of those betting areas, watch what
- 30:01Speaker 1: they're doing, just if you see something a little bit different.
- 30:04Speaker 1: But that's a really good place to start if anyone
- 30:06Speaker 1: doesn't know how to get started over the next couple
- 30:09Speaker 1: of weeks, or you're trying to hunt a new property,
- 30:11Speaker 1: find those nasty thickets where you always see does going
- 30:13Speaker 1: in and out of get down one of them. I mean,
- 30:15Speaker 1: you can't go wrong trying that right right, absolutely, And
- 30:19Speaker 1: even more of a favorite strategy than that is staging
- 30:25Speaker 1: areas like I've I found last year was a perfect example.
- 30:31Speaker 1: I'm in a staging area where deer stop and chill
- 30:35Speaker 1: out before they hit a egg field where they make
- 30:39Speaker 1: they expose themselves to the wide open right right, You know,
- 30:43Speaker 1: like that that first ten yards of a fee from
- 30:47Speaker 1: a field edge in it's pretty thick and it almost
- 30:50Speaker 1: creates an edge to the wide open timber or a
- 30:52Speaker 1: wider open timber. And you can if you match that
- 30:55Speaker 1: with like a terrain feature like what I did last year,
- 30:58Speaker 1: and the right like an aggressive wind direction, you're gonna
- 31:04Speaker 1: what what you're doing there is the deer only have
- 31:07Speaker 1: so many options to go into an egg field and
- 31:11Speaker 1: they just kind of it's almost like they're they're waiting
- 31:15Speaker 1: to feel a little bit more comfortable, maybe waiting for
- 31:17Speaker 1: the sun to go down a little bit. And if
- 31:19Speaker 1: you can match that with a good terrain feature. And
- 31:21Speaker 1: this is just my personal opinion, I wouldn't ever call
- 31:24Speaker 1: myself an expert on whitetail hunting, but you're you're putting
- 31:30Speaker 1: yourself in a position where they're almost forced to take
- 31:33Speaker 1: a certain path once they get out of this more
- 31:37Speaker 1: open timber. So they're coming from their betting area, they're
- 31:40Speaker 1: using a travel corridor, they're staging, and if you can
- 31:43Speaker 1: get it a terrain feature to force them into a
- 31:46Speaker 1: specific part of a staging area before they head out.
- 31:50Speaker 1: That's just a killer spot. Yeah, you're you're adding in,
- 31:53Speaker 1: like the pinch point idea into you're kind of combining
- 31:55Speaker 1: all those things to like to find the spot within
- 31:57Speaker 1: the spot. Absolutely, absolutely, And that's tough for that's tough
- 32:04Speaker 1: for let's say a new guy. Like, for example, I
- 32:06Speaker 1: had a guy reach out to me on Instagram today
- 32:08Speaker 1: said he was he's not new to hunting, but he's
- 32:11Speaker 1: new to bow hunting. And he's like, dude, give me
- 32:13Speaker 1: some insight, and right, just be observant and think about
- 32:22Speaker 1: think about it. You can't, like, you can't just say
- 32:25Speaker 1: I'm going to be a bow hunter and I want
- 32:26Speaker 1: to go kill a big buck or a mature buck
- 32:29Speaker 1: or whatever. You just have to take these baby steps
- 32:32Speaker 1: and keep your eyes open, your ears open, and your
- 32:34Speaker 1: brain open so that when you know all these things
- 32:38Speaker 1: that you've learned over the years or you've talked about,
- 32:42Speaker 1: it's like, holy cow, there is here's some edge. Oh
- 32:45Speaker 1: my god, there's a terrain feature. I better put a
- 32:47Speaker 1: tree stand here. And I hope, I hope that in
- 32:50Speaker 1: your real life when you're out there hunting, you see
- 32:53Speaker 1: these things that there's this inner dialogue going on and
- 32:55Speaker 1: that you sound just like that. I hope you're walking
- 32:57Speaker 1: with It was like, oh my god, here dude, it was.
- 33:01Speaker 1: It was funny today. I was checking um, I was
- 33:04Speaker 1: checking a trail camera, and so it was right off
- 33:07Speaker 1: this fence crossing on a big pinch point, like the
- 33:10Speaker 1: big pinch is what I call it. Right a cattle
- 33:13Speaker 1: pasture meets a big bend in a creek and then
- 33:16Speaker 1: there's a huge drop off that nothing goes up or
- 33:18Speaker 1: down and it creates a big pinch point. Well, I
- 33:21Speaker 1: walked into it just a little bit after I checked
- 33:23Speaker 1: the trail camera. And remember a couple of years ago
- 33:27Speaker 1: when they logged it and and then it got so
- 33:31Speaker 1: a certain part of this ridge got thick and there's
- 33:34Speaker 1: a main trail and a couple of small rubs that
- 33:36Speaker 1: are going around it, which the trail got altered because
- 33:40Speaker 1: the tree top was still there. So now they're going
- 33:42Speaker 1: a little bit further north of the down the ridge
- 33:46Speaker 1: to come around this, uh, this big deadfall, and out loud,
- 33:52Speaker 1: I go like like the bills very dough boy, and
- 33:57Speaker 1: I just caught myself. I go, I am so glad
- 33:59Speaker 1: no one was with me. To witness that. But it
- 34:02Speaker 1: was just this click, like, oh, they're coming around here,
- 34:05Speaker 1: I have this, I can hit this access route, and
- 34:09Speaker 1: they're looping around and almost forcing You know, when we
- 34:13Speaker 1: when we say pinch point and we say travel corridor,
- 34:16Speaker 1: these are gray areas, right, because a pinch point doesn't
- 34:20Speaker 1: need to be a giant pasture meeting a giant bend
- 34:25Speaker 1: in a creek. It can be something as small as
- 34:28Speaker 1: a deadfall forcing deer to go around something. Right, So
- 34:34Speaker 1: when I say be observant, I'm saying look for things
- 34:37Speaker 1: like that as well. Yeah, And I think that's such
- 34:41Speaker 1: a great point as if you're making that switch from
- 34:44Speaker 1: gun to bow, or if you're a new hunter in general,
- 34:47Speaker 1: or if you're just trying to take that next step
- 34:49Speaker 1: and kill big, mature deer or whatever it is, that
- 34:53Speaker 1: that that focus on observation and then and we talked
- 34:56Speaker 1: about this a lot, but the next step is then
- 34:58Speaker 1: asking why so you observe something and then ask why
- 35:03Speaker 1: did that happen and then try to figure that out.
- 35:06Speaker 1: And when you start answering that question for yourself based
- 35:08Speaker 1: off of your observations, in a little bit of you know,
- 35:11Speaker 1: detection detective work, that's when you start connecting the dots.
- 35:15Speaker 1: And then I think if you do that over the
- 35:18Speaker 1: next couple of weeks, you start observing a lot, thinking
- 35:20Speaker 1: about why the deer doing what they're doing, and then
- 35:22Speaker 1: adjusting to that, you're putting yourself in a good position
- 35:25Speaker 1: to have success during the rut. I mean, focus on
- 35:28Speaker 1: those doughbetting areas. Focus on these different terrain features or
- 35:32Speaker 1: cover features that push deer into smaller areas, pinch points, funnels.
- 35:37Speaker 1: Those bucks are on their feet, moving, trying to find doughs,
- 35:40Speaker 1: find where they get concentrated. If you do that and
- 35:43Speaker 1: then observe and adjust, I think you're you're gonna put
- 35:46Speaker 1: yourself in a position for success. And then finally I think,
- 35:49Speaker 1: my my final high level thought here on the rut,
- 35:52Speaker 1: and this is this is nothing new, This is not special.
- 35:55Speaker 1: We say it every single year, but it's a grind.
- 35:58Speaker 1: You got to grind it out. You gotta put the
- 36:00Speaker 1: time in. You gotta try to stay positive and stay focused,
- 36:03Speaker 1: even if you've hunted four days all day and you
- 36:06Speaker 1: haven't seen crap. Um. It's always easier said than done.
- 36:09Speaker 1: I always find myself sitting out there and be like
- 36:11Speaker 1: son of a mother God damnly, I'm piste off. Why
- 36:15Speaker 1: have I Why haven't we seeing anything? But then you
- 36:17Speaker 1: just gotta remember it could all change in five seconds.
- 36:21Speaker 1: Your whole season just like that can change. So you know,
- 36:24Speaker 1: I always trying to remember that last year. I was
- 36:27Speaker 1: thinking about it. Last year within shooting range, I only
- 36:33Speaker 1: had three deer the entire season come within shooting range. Now,
- 36:37Speaker 1: I didn't shoot a doll last year. Um, I had three,
- 36:41Speaker 1: two doughs in the buck that I killed. That was it.
- 36:46Speaker 1: And so I wasn't necessarily focused on trying to shoot
- 36:50Speaker 1: a dough last year just because at the time situation.
- 36:54Speaker 1: But what I'm getting at is that's and this is
- 36:57Speaker 1: a little bit more of an advanced strategy for people
- 37:00Speaker 1: who you know, have been into it. But and if
- 37:04Speaker 1: if you are an experienced bow hunter, you already know this.
- 37:08Speaker 1: But for me, I don't care about seeing small little bucks.
- 37:12Speaker 1: I don't care about seeing deer anymore. I can't care
- 37:16Speaker 1: about seeing a deer one, you know, the deer that
- 37:20Speaker 1: are that are on my to to do list, so
- 37:24Speaker 1: to speak. And if I go into an area and
- 37:29Speaker 1: only see one or two deer, and it's the deer
- 37:33Speaker 1: that I'm happy, you know what I mean. That makes
- 37:35Speaker 1: me happy. And on this tree stand that I set
- 37:40Speaker 1: up this weekend in that on the corner of one
- 37:43Speaker 1: of those that trianglor that excuse me, the that big
- 37:46Speaker 1: thicket that I was talking to you about. I know
- 37:50Speaker 1: that when the time is right, I'm going to have
- 37:52Speaker 1: two shots. Right, so I am now, I'm not setting
- 37:56Speaker 1: up for a deer could come any direction. I'm assuming
- 38:00Speaker 1: deer are coming from one of two directions, and I
- 38:04Speaker 1: know that I have a shot here, and I know
- 38:07Speaker 1: that I have a shot here, And then, to be
- 38:09Speaker 1: honest with you, I have a wall of thickness in
- 38:12Speaker 1: front of me that I can't even see through. So
- 38:16Speaker 1: I know, from not only experience, historical data, and just
- 38:20Speaker 1: from how deer use the terrain, that they're going to
- 38:23Speaker 1: come from one or one of two spots, and I
- 38:25Speaker 1: better be ready when it happens. All comes down to
- 38:28Speaker 1: comes back to that more informed approach. The more and
- 38:32Speaker 1: more you've learned about these areas, the more focus you
- 38:34Speaker 1: can be with where you hunt, how you set up,
- 38:36Speaker 1: you get to that point where you are where you
- 38:39Speaker 1: you know, I'm just I'm just really trying to hunt
- 38:41Speaker 1: this deer or these two deer and the rest I'm
- 38:43Speaker 1: not worried about. And I know it's going to come
- 38:45Speaker 1: from one of these two spots, and the rest I'm
- 38:47Speaker 1: not worried about. And that's that advanced stage where you
- 38:50Speaker 1: have so much intel, so much experience. Um, it's a
- 38:54Speaker 1: good place to be. Thirty two yards Can you make
- 38:58Speaker 1: a shot? Thirty two yards? Yeah, thirty two yards on
- 39:03Speaker 1: it's gonna be the max at this stand and the
- 39:06Speaker 1: stand that I set up. I think if it goes down,
- 39:11Speaker 1: I feel like it's going to go down there on
- 39:13Speaker 1: a north or any type of an east wind at
- 39:18Speaker 1: which are very rare. Alright, Well, we've got some easterly
- 39:22Speaker 1: winds coming in at the end of this week, at
- 39:24Speaker 1: least over here. Yeah. Yeah, So I'm not calling my shot.
- 39:28Speaker 1: I'm just saying, like, I feel like, you know, when
- 39:31Speaker 1: you set up a tree stand, you already know what
- 39:33Speaker 1: wind direction you're gonna hunt it in. Oh yeah, you've
- 39:36Speaker 1: got the game plan in mind for sure. Yeah. So, like,
- 39:41Speaker 1: so are you jacked? I know, I know we're trying
- 39:44Speaker 1: to cut this up, but now after talking about it,
- 39:47Speaker 1: my calmness has kind of gone away, and it could
- 39:50Speaker 1: be the coffee. I'm like I drink a lot of
- 39:52Speaker 1: coffee these days, and I think it could be the
- 39:55Speaker 1: coffee mixed with me talking about it now is starting
- 39:58Speaker 1: to get me, you know, Like, yeah, buddy, I am
- 40:05Speaker 1: really excited, particularly because I just got word from a
- 40:07Speaker 1: friend that Tran was spotted moving in daylight right right
- 40:13Speaker 1: in my neck of the woods last night, right where
- 40:15Speaker 1: I can. So I'm going in after him tonight. I'm
- 40:19Speaker 1: gonna try to get that pre Rut special on old
- 40:22Speaker 1: Mr Tran. He's he is a stud of an eight pointer.
- 40:25Speaker 1: So last last question I have for how's Further doing
- 40:29Speaker 1: these days? You know what? Further is disappointed me? Dan?
- 40:34Speaker 1: He posts on Instagram the other day and I'm really excited.
- 40:37Speaker 1: He's up at five thirty am, and I'm like, all right,
- 40:39Speaker 1: the guy is getting off his tail and doing some hunting.
- 40:42Speaker 1: Good for him. I'm proud of him. Um. We we
- 40:44Speaker 1: got access to a new property this year that we're sharing. Um,
- 40:48Speaker 1: and I haven't been out there yet just because I've
- 40:50Speaker 1: got these other things going on. He this is the
- 40:53Speaker 1: best spot he has a deer hunt, So I was
- 40:54Speaker 1: really excited. He's gonna hunt that hard and learn it
- 40:56Speaker 1: and stuff. And he's only been out there once all season.
- 41:00Speaker 1: So it's five thirty am. I see him post and
- 41:02Speaker 1: he's heading out to hunt. I'm jacked. Alright, alright, the
- 41:04Speaker 1: guy is gonna go out there and get it done.
- 41:06Speaker 1: He's gonna check the cameras pumped. The next picture he posts,
- 41:11Speaker 1: saw it. He's duck hunting. He's out there duck hunting,
- 41:15Speaker 1: and I'm like, dude, get after the bucks. You gotta
- 41:18Speaker 1: get into the bucks. Does Further Does Further have any
- 41:22Speaker 1: Iowa Points? Uh? You know, I think he bought one
- 41:26Speaker 1: point and he was talking about trying to buy some
- 41:29Speaker 1: more and I don't know if he ever continued, but
- 41:30Speaker 1: I know he at least got one. Um. What you
- 41:34Speaker 1: think he needs to come out and experience the Iowa magic? Well,
- 41:38Speaker 1: I don't know. Like there's part of me that's like, hey,
- 41:41Speaker 1: get into Iowa Point, come to Iowa and then I'll
- 41:44Speaker 1: have some guys take him duck hunting, man, I mean
- 41:51Speaker 1: duck hunter. Is he a big duck hunter? He's never
- 41:53Speaker 1: I don't understand. No, he's never duck hunting before this.
- 41:56Speaker 1: This is his first time. Okay, so just something to
- 41:59Speaker 1: do that was different. Yeah, And I get it. It
- 42:01Speaker 1: looks like fun um so I just kid, it's great
- 42:05Speaker 1: he got out there head a good time, But I
- 42:06Speaker 1: really was hoping he was gonna shoot a big giant
- 42:08Speaker 1: buck and text me a picture of that. So one
- 42:12Speaker 1: of these days, Dan, if we give him enough crap,
- 42:14Speaker 1: he'll get his stuff in order and get out there
- 42:16Speaker 1: and chase the white tails. Hey, I got I have
- 42:19Speaker 1: an idea. Yeah, let's make a T shirt that says
- 42:25Speaker 1: something like I Know Further and have a picture of
- 42:27Speaker 1: his face on it, and then sell it and donate
- 42:31Speaker 1: all the money to charity. I think it's a great idea.
- 42:34Speaker 1: Do you think anybody would buy it? Though? Yeah? By
- 42:37Speaker 1: I Know Further and I know I Know Further shirt,
- 42:40Speaker 1: I think that's I think that would be money. Oh
- 42:44Speaker 1: my god. Okay, if anyone has the how many people
- 42:48Speaker 1: how many people listen to this podcast? Many tens of thousands? Right?
- 42:52Speaker 1: All right? So if we sell them for twenty bucks
- 42:57Speaker 1: and only five thousand people buy them, right, uh, and
- 43:02Speaker 1: then we give the you know, give all the money
- 43:05Speaker 1: that we make from it to some charity. Man, that's
- 43:09Speaker 1: a lot of money. I mean, that would be a
- 43:11Speaker 1: lot of money. If someone could find a picture of
- 43:14Speaker 1: Further online and what I'm envisioning is kind of do
- 43:18Speaker 1: you remember the image of of President Obama when he
- 43:22Speaker 1: was running for office originally, it's like kind of like
- 43:24Speaker 1: a like this the whole drawing, Yes, the Hope pictures.
- 43:28Speaker 1: So imagine like Josh's face, Further's face like that on
- 43:32Speaker 1: a T shirt that if somebody can do that and
- 43:35Speaker 1: is willing to let us use that image. You know
- 43:37Speaker 1: a guy who can make T shirts, right Dan mr
- 43:41Speaker 1: Zar might be able to help us do something like that. Um,
- 43:44Speaker 1: that's a funny idea. If we can actually get that,
- 43:47Speaker 1: I would be all about it, don't I mean, we
- 43:49Speaker 1: should probably donate to q d m A since that's
- 43:51Speaker 1: where Further works. That'd be a good idea done. Let's
- 43:56Speaker 1: make some money. I know we're talking about the rut
- 43:58Speaker 1: here and all this stuff, but at the same time, right,
- 44:01Speaker 1: we have to be responsible hunters and give back and
- 44:05Speaker 1: the cut m a right and you know, talk about
- 44:07Speaker 1: conservation a little bit, and this is the perfect way
- 44:10Speaker 1: to do it. Sigence Field delivered. Um, do we have
- 44:12Speaker 1: to get like a waiver for Further to sign or
- 44:15Speaker 1: do we just like treat him as you know, he's
- 44:18Speaker 1: a piece of mate man, a piece of me. We're
- 44:21Speaker 1: not going to tell him. All right, let's see what
- 44:26Speaker 1: we can do. Let's do it all right, and I
- 44:29Speaker 1: think with that, let's wrap up the intro. Uh. We're
- 44:33Speaker 1: gonna get Jared on here in a minute to talk
- 44:35Speaker 1: more about what he thinks about hunting the rut. But
- 44:38Speaker 1: until then, Dan, I wish you all of the deer
- 44:42Speaker 1: hunting luck in the world. Same. Do you get it done.
- 44:45Speaker 1: Let's have the rut of our lives all right with me.
- 44:49Speaker 1: Now on the line is Jared Mills. Welcome to the show,
- 44:52Speaker 1: Jared and Mark, thanks for having me. I'm looking forward
- 44:54Speaker 1: to this me too. I've been following along with your
- 44:57Speaker 1: hunts and stories for a lot of years, it seems like,
- 45:00Speaker 1: so I'm glad we're finally getting a chat and uh
- 45:03Speaker 1: and connect like this. So thank you for making the time. Yeah,
- 45:06Speaker 1: I appreciate it. That's uh, it's cool to hear that
- 45:08Speaker 1: you've been following that. It seems like I've been doing
- 45:10Speaker 1: it forever now. But it's a it's still as fun
- 45:13Speaker 1: now as it was. They want It's crazy how fast
- 45:16Speaker 1: time flies. I was just thinking about that, Like, I
- 45:18Speaker 1: remember when I first started Wired Hunt. It was I
- 45:22Speaker 1: think the first year that you guys that Bill had
- 45:24Speaker 1: started Midwest White Tail, and I remember watching his first
- 45:27Speaker 1: season while I was starting the Wired Dunton blog way
- 45:30Speaker 1: back I just got out of college, and um man,
- 45:33Speaker 1: everything's come a long way since then. It's crazy how
- 45:36Speaker 1: long ago that was. Yeah, and it's crazy too just
- 45:38Speaker 1: to see how everything that follows, and especially in the
- 45:41Speaker 1: digital age, and just how even mid Us I tell,
- 45:44Speaker 1: how it's changed since it started back in two thousand
- 45:47Speaker 1: and eight. It's just that's pretty cool to see just
- 45:50Speaker 1: how everything develops and just trying to keep up with everything.
- 45:53Speaker 1: Oh yeah, it's uh interesting times. Like you said, lots
- 45:57Speaker 1: of change, lots of change. So so speaking of that
- 45:59Speaker 1: in Midwest White Tail, um, can you just fill folks
- 46:03Speaker 1: in who maybe aren't familiar with with who you are,
- 46:05Speaker 1: or what you do, or what Midwest White Tail is
- 46:08Speaker 1: or all the other things you've got going on. Can
- 46:09Speaker 1: you just give us a real quick cliff notes intro
- 46:12Speaker 1: to you and the work you're doing over there. Absolutely, so,
- 46:15Speaker 1: mid Flight Tail. First of all, it's a digital hunting show.
- 46:19Speaker 1: It's it's always the bread and butter has always been
- 46:22Speaker 1: in the online send my Life format started back in
- 46:25Speaker 1: two thousand and eight. Um I joined Midda flite Tail
- 46:29Speaker 1: as an intern in two thousand ten and then became
- 46:32Speaker 1: full time with them for a little while working for Bill,
- 46:36Speaker 1: and I kind of did some other things as full
- 46:39Speaker 1: time job in between some sales jobs, and but I
- 46:43Speaker 1: always continue to produced flite Tail from my house and
- 46:47Speaker 1: recently got back into the hunting industry full time and
- 46:52Speaker 1: now as of earlier this year, UM, I have a
- 46:55Speaker 1: production company called forty one North Media and we produce
- 46:59Speaker 1: a number are different hunting shows. Do your Turkey a
- 47:02Speaker 1: little Bit Everything? Um in middle side tells one of
- 47:05Speaker 1: those shows we produced. So it's me and three other
- 47:09Speaker 1: full time guys and we have currently six interns right
- 47:12Speaker 1: now as well. So this is no doubt our busy
- 47:16Speaker 1: time of year. You know, it's just NonStop video production
- 47:19Speaker 1: every day late nights, especially when we're all trying to
- 47:22Speaker 1: hunt each day too. But um, it's uh, it's fun.
- 47:26Speaker 1: It's pretty cool too. Just you take stuff front, we'll
- 47:32Speaker 1: filming and take it from concepts and see you three
- 47:34Speaker 1: room the production side. And it's fun to produce lost
- 47:38Speaker 1: shows for companies like Real Tree and Cabella's and and
- 47:40Speaker 1: some other names. Um, just to kind of stay connected,
- 47:44Speaker 1: and I get to work on some pretty cool projects.
- 47:46Speaker 1: So that's that's what I've been up to up and
- 47:49Speaker 1: like I said, wouldn't have dislike I'm still filming formad
- 47:52Speaker 1: Dislite till I think this is my ninth or tenth
- 47:55Speaker 1: year doing it. We're getting old, We're getting old. Yeah,
- 48:02Speaker 1: I like that. I really I really like the fact though,
- 48:04Speaker 1: that you guys have done such a good job of
- 48:06Speaker 1: getting stuff out fast like you you guys are probably
- 48:10Speaker 1: the best, if not you know, one of the best
- 48:12Speaker 1: at getting really close to real time updates out your
- 48:16Speaker 1: your blog, the video blogs, almost daily updates. That's always
- 48:19Speaker 1: been something I thought was pretty cool. So if anyone
- 48:21Speaker 1: out there who wants to follow along with some great
- 48:23Speaker 1: white Tail stories, uh, you guys definitely have some to share.
- 48:27Speaker 1: And that's that's really why I wanted to talk to you, Jerry,
- 48:29Speaker 1: because you are obviously getting after it really hard every year,
- 48:34Speaker 1: year after year, chasing big white Tail bucks. But then
- 48:37Speaker 1: you're also surrounded by a bunch of other buddies and
- 48:39Speaker 1: people that are part of Midwest white Tail or the
- 48:42Speaker 1: production company that are also doing the same. So I
- 48:44Speaker 1: feel like you must be getting this huge influx of
- 48:47Speaker 1: recent intel and different ideas and updates and how things
- 48:51Speaker 1: are going in the field. I'm sure you're just hearing
- 48:53Speaker 1: this from all over the place every year, year after year, um,
- 48:57Speaker 1: which I imagine kind of fills you out with a
- 48:58Speaker 1: pretty wide bread of knowledge and ideas and stuff. And
- 49:04Speaker 1: when it comes to the RUT, I mean, that's where
- 49:06Speaker 1: we're at right now. The super Bowl is just about
- 49:08Speaker 1: upon us the day this episode is going to go out.
- 49:11Speaker 1: Unless I bomb something and mess this up, it's gonna
- 49:14Speaker 1: come out on Halloween. So November Eve, this podcast will
- 49:19Speaker 1: be dropping. So it really is. I mean, I'm not
- 49:22Speaker 1: sure there's any time I'm more excited than right at
- 49:24Speaker 1: the very beginning of it all. So I figured we
- 49:27Speaker 1: would just pick your brain on all things RUT and
- 49:31Speaker 1: see if we can help some folks out and uh
- 49:33Speaker 1: lead to some tags getting filled here. So are you
- 49:36Speaker 1: up for that? Absolutely? I can't wait. It's hard, so
- 49:40Speaker 1: hard to believe that November is almost see you already,
- 49:42Speaker 1: I know it's trying to just trying to figure out
- 49:45Speaker 1: and make sure you're ready to go, because it's once
- 49:47Speaker 1: it once, it's here, it's a blur, and um, just
- 49:51Speaker 1: trying to catch up or you know, keep up. I
- 49:53Speaker 1: guess I should, I should say, yeah, I can't wait.
- 49:56Speaker 1: It's it's right around the corner. Yeah, it's a it's
- 49:58Speaker 1: snuck up on me too. And so so I need
- 50:01Speaker 1: an update from you because I'm a little bit behind
- 50:05Speaker 1: on some of your video updates and things like that.
- 50:07Speaker 1: But early on, you were chasing a mega giant of
- 50:10Speaker 1: some kind. There was a huge buck you're after. You
- 50:12Speaker 1: were a little bit a little bit uh careful about
- 50:17Speaker 1: how much you were going to share because there's a
- 50:19Speaker 1: lot of other guys after And I could really relate
- 50:21Speaker 1: to that because last year I had a buck that
- 50:23Speaker 1: was not a buck that you usually see in Michigan,
- 50:26Speaker 1: and I was hunting this deer that was it would
- 50:27Speaker 1: have really turned some heads, and so I was kind
- 50:30Speaker 1: of nervous to talk too much about it too, So
- 50:32Speaker 1: I wait until after I killed him, and then after
- 50:34Speaker 1: I killed them, then I showed pictures and stuff. Um,
- 50:37Speaker 1: so your story was like, oh, yeah, I know how
- 50:39Speaker 1: that feels. So I'm curious, can you give us an
- 50:44Speaker 1: update on the giant? Is he still alive? Did someone
- 50:46Speaker 1: get him? Um? And then secondly, are you gonna be
- 50:49Speaker 1: getting after him soon? Yeah? I'll be happy too. It's
- 50:52Speaker 1: definitely a unique situation. I mentioned. I've been on the
- 50:56Speaker 1: flight till for nine or ten years and showcasing my
- 50:59Speaker 1: hunts and on near real time format, and I've never
- 51:03Speaker 1: not shown anything. I never had to really worry about it.
- 51:06Speaker 1: And it's not necessarily the size of this deer that
- 51:08Speaker 1: that I have to chase this year. That's naked. It
- 51:11Speaker 1: like that a little bit. It is, but it's more about, um,
- 51:15Speaker 1: you know, just the situation with the neighbors. And I
- 51:18Speaker 1: have a body, here's this hunting, and then we're sharing
- 51:21Speaker 1: all our information. But um, there's other people that hunt
- 51:24Speaker 1: that property, and by giving out that info it would
- 51:27Speaker 1: affect his hunting and his chances to kill him. So
- 51:29Speaker 1: it just it was a decision I had to make,
- 51:32Speaker 1: um with regards to not ruining personal relationships just to
- 51:36Speaker 1: show the deer um. And then I decided, you know,
- 51:40Speaker 1: with the video blogs, at least still share the journey
- 51:44Speaker 1: of it. How people can still fall along even if
- 51:46Speaker 1: they can't physically see the photo or the video of
- 51:50Speaker 1: the deer until obviously it's dead. Then we can show everything.
- 51:53Speaker 1: But you know, it's it's tough. I knew I would,
- 51:56Speaker 1: you know, people don't really understand. Some people do. Some
- 52:00Speaker 1: people don't. You know, they expect, they've come to expect
- 52:03Speaker 1: to see everything on the show, and I get that too.
- 52:05Speaker 1: It's just this kind of unique situation, um as so
- 52:09Speaker 1: does anything different. I would love to just show everything
- 52:12Speaker 1: as it happens, um so, because it's been kind of
- 52:15Speaker 1: interesting in that regard. But yes, I am still hunting him.
- 52:18Speaker 1: Um I've had actually four encounters with him now, three
- 52:23Speaker 1: three on camera. One we've been get any footage of them.
- 52:26Speaker 1: But the most recent one was within the last week.
- 52:32Speaker 1: I uh thought I had him. He was walking straight
- 52:35Speaker 1: to us about fifty sixty yards and a couple of
- 52:39Speaker 1: those actually intercepted him. They were coming down different trail
- 52:42Speaker 1: and he saw or smelled them and went their direction
- 52:45Speaker 1: and never came back. But it's been man, it's been
- 52:49Speaker 1: unbelievable this the hunt for this deer. I've I can
- 52:53Speaker 1: tell you, I've never been more aggressive on a single
- 52:57Speaker 1: deer in my life, especially in Octoba or you know,
- 53:00Speaker 1: we're not even in November yet. Enough, I've moved in
- 53:03Speaker 1: on this deer, just done some crazy things to get
- 53:06Speaker 1: close to this deer, just because I think my time
- 53:08Speaker 1: is kind of limited. I don't know when this deer
- 53:12Speaker 1: is gonna change his patterns, and I just figured that
- 53:15Speaker 1: I have to hunt him while he's showing some daylight
- 53:18Speaker 1: movement and I pretty much know where he's betting. He's
- 53:21Speaker 1: not traveling too terribly far. I just kinda felt that
- 53:26Speaker 1: that was the right move, and even had one encounter
- 53:29Speaker 1: where which is this is not necessarily my style either,
- 53:33Speaker 1: but it was my only only option. I thought to
- 53:37Speaker 1: get closer where he's betting because he's been in a
- 53:39Speaker 1: big CRP field, and I moved in on him. I
- 53:42Speaker 1: went basically inched my inch to get to the spot
- 53:45Speaker 1: I wanted to be. And it took me two hours
- 53:48Speaker 1: to go a hundred yards, and I think I got
- 53:52Speaker 1: set up at five a five. He stepped out at
- 53:57Speaker 1: twenty yards, but and and you know, I'm I'm on
- 54:01Speaker 1: the ground behind this tiny little bush. He came out
- 54:05Speaker 1: and he was just locked on me. From the moment
- 54:07Speaker 1: his rack and his head appeared from the CRP, he
- 54:11Speaker 1: was just locked on me. I don't know if you
- 54:13Speaker 1: heard me setting up or what happened, but he can't
- 54:16Speaker 1: be walked into twelve yards just straight at me, and
- 54:19Speaker 1: I couldn't do anything is just I was just frozen.
- 54:22Speaker 1: I couldn't I couldn't turn or anything. So he's looking
- 54:24Speaker 1: at me the whole time. But to be looking up
- 54:28Speaker 1: at a there like that at twelve yards, I mean,
- 54:30Speaker 1: it's there's one of most incredible experiences I've ever had.
- 54:33Speaker 1: And I can't wait to to share the video with guys.
- 54:37Speaker 1: It's that's pretty cool. I mean, the only thing I
- 54:39Speaker 1: can I don't know if you ever saw, I filmed
- 54:42Speaker 1: a pretty cool buck fight back in two thousand and twelve. Yeah,
- 54:49Speaker 1: the one in the creek. That's probably the only thing
- 54:51Speaker 1: I can compare to as far as just a surreal
- 54:54Speaker 1: feeling and an experience in the woods I've had. That's
- 54:58Speaker 1: probably the only thing that's it's comparable to it. So
- 55:01Speaker 1: I've been getting close. It's been a pretty cool hunt.
- 55:04Speaker 1: And uh, and we talked about only being October. I
- 55:09Speaker 1: feel like it's like November as hard as I've been
- 55:11Speaker 1: hunting that Jesus. Yeah, it's been. It's been a cool journey.
- 55:17Speaker 1: Hopefully it's nowhere near the end either. Yeah. So okay,
- 55:21Speaker 1: so you're still on this, dear, It's just about November,
- 55:25Speaker 1: so this is probably a good place to start. Then,
- 55:27Speaker 1: as as far as talking about hunting the rut. Once
- 55:30Speaker 1: November hits and the ruts starts really kicking in the gear,
- 55:33Speaker 1: can you kind of describe how you imagine your strategy changing,
- 55:36Speaker 1: how you're gonna adjust your hunt given that the rut
- 55:40Speaker 1: is is popping. Yeah. I'm a big trail camera guys,
- 55:43Speaker 1: so a lot of that's going to be monitoring trail cameras.
- 55:46Speaker 1: It's for me, I'd like to target specific deer. In
- 55:50Speaker 1: this case, it's it's just buck and then I have
- 55:52Speaker 1: another deer that's on the form that I own, UM,
- 55:56Speaker 1: that I'm also pursuing. But you know, with chasing specific deer,
- 56:01Speaker 1: it's it's all about learning how that deer uses a
- 56:05Speaker 1: certain area where he uses it. And that's one thing
- 56:08Speaker 1: I've learned over the years is bucks are very individual. Um,
- 56:14Speaker 1: there's similarities you can drawl across, you know, years of experience,
- 56:18Speaker 1: but in general, I can't just go to a farm
- 56:22Speaker 1: and hunt my best stand. It's it's all about what
- 56:25Speaker 1: that deer specifically does, how he travels, how he acts
- 56:29Speaker 1: and during certain weeks and months of the year. Um.
- 56:33Speaker 1: All that So, Sir Tammers plays a big part in
- 56:35Speaker 1: that for me and I just learning that deer in
- 56:38Speaker 1: his tendencies and and things like that. So aston we'll
- 56:41Speaker 1: continue to do with this big deer. If he's showing
- 56:44Speaker 1: daylight movement a certain area that I know that I
- 56:46Speaker 1: could hunt him, I'm going to keep being aggressive. Um.
- 56:50Speaker 1: If he kind of disappears for a while and or
- 56:54Speaker 1: the conditions aren't great, I'm not going to get crazy
- 56:57Speaker 1: about hunting him, I'm gonna go somewhere else. Um. I
- 57:01Speaker 1: imagine this near is kind of travel quite a bit.
- 57:04Speaker 1: The property that I'm hunting him on is very small,
- 57:07Speaker 1: and a lot of people know about this deer, which
- 57:10Speaker 1: obviously means he travels quite a bit. So that's why
- 57:14Speaker 1: this kind of goes back to why I was being
- 57:16Speaker 1: so aggressive in October. Is I just I know it's
- 57:20Speaker 1: going to change it any day. Um, and he's a
- 57:25Speaker 1: hundred yards away from jumping the fence and being shot
- 57:28Speaker 1: by someone else, or you know, anything can happen. So
- 57:32Speaker 1: it's just about monitoring trail cameras and really just figuring
- 57:35Speaker 1: out how he changes the patterns and adjusting to that. Yeah,
- 57:39Speaker 1: so tell me about your RUT trail camera strategy. Where
- 57:43Speaker 1: where are you putting your cameras? At this time of year,
- 57:45Speaker 1: is it? Is it different? Do you you know when
- 57:47Speaker 1: November hits or when the pre right hits or something.
- 57:49Speaker 1: Do you shift your cameras in any kind of way? Um,
- 57:52Speaker 1: what's the locations look like for those? I don't shift
- 57:56Speaker 1: them a lot. Usually from about the first of October
- 58:00Speaker 1: up until late season, my cameras always remain on scrapes. Um.
- 58:05Speaker 1: I pulled some cards this morning, and the scrapes here
- 58:08Speaker 1: and now are just on fire. Almost every branch that
- 58:11Speaker 1: remotely looks like a licking branches at the right height,
- 58:14Speaker 1: it's it's torn up right now. So that's where I
- 58:17Speaker 1: leave them. And the reason I don't move them a
- 58:19Speaker 1: lot is just to keep disturbance down. Um. My experience
- 58:24Speaker 1: of scraps will continue to be hot all the way
- 58:26Speaker 1: through November. It's just not worth going around and justin
- 58:29Speaker 1: too much and doing too much damage when you don't
- 58:33Speaker 1: really need to. Yeah, um, but yeah, and then you
- 58:38Speaker 1: know what. What show cameras specifically is a little bit
- 58:40Speaker 1: off topic, but um, I like to try to have
- 58:43Speaker 1: as many elements as possible when setting up a camera,
- 58:46Speaker 1: so I usually have a scrape, but it's also usually
- 58:49Speaker 1: on an intersection of trails or the edge of a
- 58:53Speaker 1: field or something like that where I get more than
- 58:56Speaker 1: just the scrape activity. I get the travel routes and
- 59:01Speaker 1: directions and stuff like that too. I want as much
- 59:03Speaker 1: information from one single camera location as possible. Yeah, I
- 59:08Speaker 1: like that. What about how you're specifically setting up? Are
- 59:12Speaker 1: you hanging high in the tree and pointing down? Do
- 59:15Speaker 1: you put it at eye level? Do you have a
- 59:17Speaker 1: certain I don't know. Do you worry about dear noticing
- 59:19Speaker 1: the camera at all? I don't I like eye level.
- 59:24Speaker 1: I think I may here even just I like quality
- 59:26Speaker 1: pictures too much, you know, I think he could probably
- 59:29Speaker 1: get away with, you know, hiding them and make sure
- 59:32Speaker 1: you don't do any damage. Um. But most dear in
- 59:38Speaker 1: my experience, haven't been too scared of cameras. But this
- 59:42Speaker 1: this kind of goes back to me talking about bucks
- 59:45Speaker 1: being individuals. There are there are some that react differently.
- 59:48Speaker 1: You know, some will come in not care, will work
- 59:51Speaker 1: to scrape really aggressively. Uh. Some you'll still get their picture,
- 59:54Speaker 1: but they know once that camera starts going off, they'll
- 59:57Speaker 1: just walk away. Um totally. You know, there's times where
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: maybe it'd be better to to hide the camera a
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: little bit more pointed down, so it's not their face.
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: But in general, I think I just like quality photos
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: too much, and even I use some white flash cameras
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: still too, just because those night pictures are so so
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: cool that I just I know they react a little
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: more to the white flash, but it's worth it in
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: my opinions. Yeah, it's hard to uh, I certainly can
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: relate sometimes those pictures. Sometimes they're just as much fun
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: as anything. Oh man, I just yeah, I love the
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: whole process of from trail cameras, even even well past
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: the hunting strategy aspect of it. I just I like
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: learning about deer through trail cameras. Yeah, yeah, I agree.
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: So one of the things that I'm always debating when
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: it comes to my camera setups during the rut is
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: the fact that stuff changes so fast during the rut.
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: It can be on in a location for today and
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: then tomorrow could be crickets. So it seems like getting
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: trail camera intel quick is really important. But on the
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: other hand, I'm like you, and then I'm really always
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: trying to keep my presence low. I want to be
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: in there as minimally as possible, So I always have
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: this debate internally, I'm like, should I check cameras or
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: should I stay away? And I go back and forth,
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: back and forth, back and forth. How how do you
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: think about that? How often are you checking your cameras
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: and how do you try to minimize that impact during
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: the rut? Yeah, I have the same mindset as you.
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: I mean, you want to be smart about everything. By
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: the same time, you want as much information as possible. UM.
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: I do two things. One, I try to set the
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: cameras up in easy to access locations UM places that
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: easy to drive to with the ut V or something
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: so that I'm not leaving grounds and I'm I'm in
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: an area where you're used to see in some type
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: of activity. I want to pull in those. And then
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: the second thing that's really changed in the last couple
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: of years for me is I'm using the system from
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: cutting Back called cutty Link. And that's pretty slick system
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: because you can get UM I think it's up to
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: fifteen or sixteen cameras to communicate to one home camera,
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: so you can put the home cameras and an easy
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: access location and put all the other ones out wherever
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: betting areas just corris places are hard to access. Um,
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: and those those pictures get sent to your one easy
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: to access camera and that's really changed my strategy for
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: for setting upsherial cameras. So informs where I can use
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: that cutty link, Um, I'm more apt to get past
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: the easy access locations system up in betting areas, deep
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: in the timber stuff like that and get that information.
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: And that's that's been a game changer for sure. Yeah,
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: that's pretty nice to to let those sit and not
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: need to go physically visit them. I've I haven't used
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: that in particular, but I've used other cell camera type
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: things like that, and that can help us on Yeah,
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: no doubt, I haven't used too much of the cell
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: cams yet. Um, But that you know this this cutty link,
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: you still have to go to the property and pull
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: the card, but at least you don't have to go
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: visit every camera. It's a huge time saver too when
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: you're checking a lot of cameras. That makes a big difference.
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: So when you when you're looking at camera pictures, to you,
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: I think I heard you mentioned the fact that you're
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: looking at past data as well. Do you pay much
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: attention to annual patterns and see these bucks doing something
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: similar year after year, or any kind of trend like
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: that I do, but not in the sense of like
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: really like micro at the micro level. It's more like
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: general area usage as opposed to well, on this day
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: last year, with these conditions, he walked on this trail.
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: You know, I don't, I don't. I don't go to
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: that level, but I will stay you know, during this
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: first two weeks in November, he was really using this
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: part of the form last year. I'm really going to
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: focus on that and in the hopes that he does
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: it again. So yes, I do look at that, but
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: not at the level that some guys do. I don't think. Yeah,
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: I feel like that's that's pretty well in line with
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: what I found is is you can get a general trend,
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: a general idea like this time of year, he basically
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: he usually starts moving or this area. He tends to
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: get hot at this point. But they're still individual, wild
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: animals that just do random things sometimes whatever they want. Yeah, exactly,
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: and that could just be I just personally haven't seen
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: something like that workout exactly twice, you know, two years
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: in a row. But in general, I agree with you.
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: I think sometimes their patterns are a lot more random. Yeah,
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: So do you have any kind of data like that
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: on either of these two target bucks from last year
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: or previous years that's going to help you one of them?
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: I do. The one that's not not the giant, I
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: don't really have. This is my first year hunting that property.
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: I've helped manage it over the years, so I've never
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: personally hunted it. Um this year, I think seems to
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: travel a lot, just again based on a lot of
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: neighborhood information. Um the other buck that I'm targeting. So
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: a buddy and I bought this property. This is my
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: first farm I've ever owned. I bought it in two
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: thousand seventeen, and he and I had our first hunt
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: together there on November three of two seventeen, and this
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: deer I called Marino. Uh, he walked underneath our treesty
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: and we had a futrail camp pictures of him before
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: our first time, and we kind of decided that, uh,
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: not really knowing, not having history, we're gonna pass the deer.
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: I thought he's made four and a half years old.
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: He walked underneath our trees center very first hunt, like
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: fifteen minutes after getting set up, there's just the coolest
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: experience on the first farm. And you know, I just
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: let's he the lifelong dream of owning a property and
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: have a deer like this walk underneath us. I mean,
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: he's probably he's a really good deer, pushing like one
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: sixty type year as a four year old, and so
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: I do have a lot of information in my hand
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: from seventeen and that one too. This year he doesn't
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: really look all that much different than he did as
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: a four and a half year a little more mass
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: and a lot bigger body. But it is pretty cool
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: having that many years of history and really getting to
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: know how it uses a certain areas. So I like,
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: I have a pretty good idea of what he likes
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: to do throughout the course of late October and into November.
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: Can you describe that? Can you tell us what you
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: think he's gonna do and how you're gonna let let's
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: say the big giant is out of the picture for
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: some reason and now you're just focusing on Marino November arrives.
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: Can you kind of walk me through the stuff you know,
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: and then how you would try to hunt based off that. Yeah, essentially,
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: the uh, because we've got got a late start in seventeen.
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: I don't have a whole lot of October information from
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: that first year, but both last year and this year
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: he slowly made his way from one arm, one end
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: of the farm to the other throughout the year. Um
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: it's been pretty interesting to watch that and think a
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: lot of it has to do with crops coming out
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: and stuff like that. He kind of sucks in once
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: all once all the neighborhood cover starts disappearing. Um So,
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: essentially he started at the north end of our of
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: our farm last year, and he did the same again
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: this year. Pretty pretty nocturnal activity unless if it was
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: this he is moving more tonight or he's betting a
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: lot further away from than where our cameras were at.
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: But he slowly started to do the thing that he
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: did last year. As you get to November, he becomes
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: a lot more active on the farm, a lot more
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: daylight active. He's he's betting kind of back in our
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: main peninsula where most of the other dear bed. Um
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: So he's he kind of made that transition and within
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: the last week to two weeks, I would say, and
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: that's pretty much in line with last year. And then
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: he's pretty much there being the rest of you the year. Um,
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: he uses one main kind of travel quarter. Of course
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: branches out a little bit just looking for dose or whatever,
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: but they kind of used as a central part of
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: our farm. Um. It's just it's all about making sure
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: we can get in and now undetected. It's kind of
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: a tough farm to hunt access wise, but if if
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: we're good about access and keep disturbance down, we should
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: have a really good shot at this year. Has November
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: comes in, that's exciting, So how do you act or
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: how can you carefully access it? Like? What is the
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: solution to that challenge? So the ultimate solution is to
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: put a boat in the water about a mile away
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: and and actually vote in because our our farm is
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: along the river. Um, there's just a lot harder logistically.
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: I don't want a boat so beat far when someone's
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: boat to make it work, and I have done that,
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: We've had some good haunts. I should have done that
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: this morning with where we hunted. But Uh, for me,
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: it's it's an everyday decision on how exul access. Sometimes
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: sometimes I'll drive an electric g TV. Sometimes I'll the
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: u TV way back in the timber not to leave
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: ground cent and try to park it in some brush. Um.
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: Sometimes I will leave it out further away and walk
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: further than you're kind of leaving the ground sent but
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: it's still quieter than driving the U TV. So I
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: don't know. I don't have a great answer. It's a
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: it's just some farms are just harder to access, and
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: there's no real great solution to it, um other than
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: just trying to have some luck on your side every
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: once in a while. Yeah, do you find yourself ever
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: limiting how often you hunt it more than usual because
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: of that? Because I've got a farm kind of like that,
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: and I because of I know that every time coming
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: in and out is going to be more of an
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: impact than I really wish it was. I've been thinking, Hm,
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: I trying to say, I've been really really picky about
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: when I go in and out because I know it's
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: an impact every time just because of that access. Is
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: that something you think about? I do, and that that
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: actus plays into one of my bigger strategies overall, and
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: that's the moving around a lot. So I will I'll
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: hunt it a little bit less, but my more often
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: than not solution is to move around on the farm.
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: Because I'm a big, big believer in the first time
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: in um and not not just first time in on property,
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: but first time in a specific tree, that the success
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: rates are so much higher in my experience, UM, and
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: it just keeps decreasing every time you hunt the same spot.
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: You know, I think we do a lot more damage
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: than we think we do after the hunt. Even if
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: you don't see you seem to spook any deer during
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: that hunt. You know, there's a lot of deer that
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: could come by a day later, two days later, three
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: days later, and uh, figure out what you just there
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: with that's crown sand And they're just very keen of
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: you know, keenly aware of their surroundings. UM. So I
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: will move around almost intentionally thinking that I probably spooked
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: a deer. This is how they're gonna just this is
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: where I'll set up, and I'll bounce around a lot.
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: I do. My haunts are hanging haunts while we're carrying
- 1:11:11Speaker 1: in tree stands, setting them up and then take him
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: down after the hunt. So I like to be very
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: mobile and that it gets me a lot higher percentage
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: of haunts that are first time in because you know,
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: I'm hunting new trees all the time. Yeah, yeah, but
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: that's kind of my strategy. I don't necessarily I had
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: a little bit less when it's bad access, but I
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: probably just move around a lot more when I know
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: there's a good chance i'd disturb something. Yeah, that makes sense. Um,
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: And and I understand the thought process there. I'm trying
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: to do more and more of that myself. What I'm
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: curious about, though, is, especially for people that are just
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: getting started trying to do more of that hanging hunt idea,
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: it can be a little tricky. It's hard to do quietly,
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: it's hard to do in the dark, it's hard to
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: do when you haven't done it a whole lot. Anything
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: you've learned over the years, having done this for so
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: long that could help someone just become more efficient doing
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: a hanging hunt, or I don't know, any way to
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: keep from spooking somebody dearer when you're getting set up,
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: or anything that you're thinking about when you're going in
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: and out doing that. Yeah, Um, A lot of it's
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: just practice. You you need to develop a system that
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: works for you. You know, how you specifically pack your
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: sticks to your stand or you know, maybe if you're
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: saddle hunting, how how you pack everything together. But um,
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: it all just comes down to routine. And the other
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: big thing I would tell people too, is because I
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: find myself doing this still. But it's just it's take
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: your time and be quiet and be safe when setting up.
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: That's a huge one. But I think we get in
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: these situations where it's starting to crack light and you're like, well,
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: I just need to get I need to get in
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: the tree, I need to get set up, and you
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: break more branches, you make more noise. Um, you just
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: kind of start sweating, giving off more sent like all
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: these little things that if you just take your time
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: and go slower, um, that tends to be a little
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: more efficient. You tend to be a little bit more
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: stealthy that way. Um, So you're kind of just telling
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: yourself to take your time. I mean, there's no if
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: you're gonna do more damage by rushing than you are
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: if you just take your time, and even if you
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: get set up a little late. I I when I'm
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: hanging hunting in the dark in the morning, I like
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: to get in there really early. I think we were
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: walking into the woods almost two and a half hours
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: before the official sunrise time this morning. Um, so I
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: like to just get mixed up plenty of time. I'm
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: not afraid to use a flashlight. I don't think it
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: bothers a deer too much. I use a little red
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: light so I can see what I'm stepping on, and
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: so I can see obviously for hanging sticks in the stand. Um, Like,
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: those are the main things. The biggest thing I would
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: help guys that are just starting out on hanging hunting
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: is just be safe. Um, there's a lot more that
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: can go wrong if you're hanging tree stands every hunt
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: and taking down tree stands every hunt. Just always make
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: sure you're connected to the tree. That's a big one
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: I like to push. Yeah, that's a very important point, um,
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: speaking of moving stands and hanging stands you know every
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: day or whatever. One of the dilemmas that I've found
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: myself in a handful quite a few times over the
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: years is it's it's the rut, and I'm in a
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: good rut location, you know, one of those spots that
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: you know should be good for this time that year.
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: Maybe I'm in some kind of pinch point, or maybe
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: i'm you know, downwind of a bedding of a dough
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: betting area, the spots that just scream great rut location,
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: some set up there. But then I see a mature buck,
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: maybe my my target buck, and I see him go
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: moving somewhere else. And then you are sitting there thinking, Okay,
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: should I take advantage of that recent intel I just
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: saw him do something? Do I think he's gonna do
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: it again? Should go moving it closer to the action
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: or do I stay put where I know should be
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: good for the rut, but just saw the bucket want
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: and you somewhere else? Do you do you chase sightings
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: like that? Or will you stick it out for the
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: day or something like that if you know you're in
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: a good location, like I think, the bigger picture question
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: asking is how do you make adjustments during the rut?
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: Is it all based off what you see? Or do
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: you stick to how the terrain should move dear and
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: hope that they come through there eventually? I adjust way
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: more often than I sit and hope that the spot
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: works out based on me thinking that's a good spot. Um.
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: I adjust all the time, even if it's a matter
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: of moving thirty yards forty yards. I do that all
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: the time. I can think back to and not just
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: a specific deer. I'll watch generally how the deer moved
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: through a property, especially if I'm trying to learn a property.
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: They don't have a lot of years experience on UM
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: And that's kind of been my situation over the past
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: four or five years. I've hunted a lot of different
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: new forms, just losing permission, gaining permission, stuff like that.
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: So and it's a lot of fun learning a new property,
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: but UM, you know, it's a challenge to and and
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: my biggest strategy is just learning and adjusting on the fly.
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: So I'll have a hunt, observe what I what, whatever happens,
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: and then I'll move based on what I saw that
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: night or what cameras are telling me of course too,
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: but more often I'm moving based on the actual sightings
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: during hunts. UM. I can give an example of the
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: deer I killed in two thousand sixteen UM as a
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: brand new property I didn't know anything about, and I
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: just slowly started to learn it, and I did a
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: lot of quote unquote observation sits where I could just
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: see a lot. They weren't necessarily out of the game,
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: not being able to kill deer, but it was just
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: spots where I know I could see a lot and
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: adjust if I needed. Then every hunt I would move
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: and i'd move fifty yards one way, and um, just
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: every hunt I would try something new, and eventually I
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: found the spot where most of the deers seem to
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: be moving to in the mornings. There's a tiny little
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: wood lot, and I believe there's November one, I moved
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: in there for a morning hunt to a hanging hunt
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: the dark, and shortly after sunrise I had out a
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: giant deer walk into seven yards and I killed him.
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: And that I wouldn't have done that if it wasn't
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: a constant adjusting game throughout those first three weeks in November. Um,
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: it's just all the piece of lead to that little woodlot,
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: and that's where I killed that big deer. So to
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: answer your question, I do ad just a lot. Even
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: if it's only a small distance like I said, or
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: thirty yards, sometimes that's enough to put you in the
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: game or at least give you that fighting to make
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: the next move. Yeah, but man, that's like the hardest
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: move for me. When you know you can, I gotta
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: I'd see him if I stayed here. But you're right,
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: I gotta move that twenty yards to get a shot
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: with a bow. Making that decision, at least for me,
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: you're fighting a serious amount of lazy human nature. Like
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: so close, but the details just matters so much when
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: you're bow hunting these deer. Um. Yeah, which, and of
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: course there's situations where you should stay. You know, I'm
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: talking in general and my experience. But if there's situations
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: where you've seen that book in the spot you're already
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: sitting before you just happened to be, you know, fifty
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: yards away that day, then maybe I'm gonna sit. You know,
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: if if my past information tells me that that book
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: is still moving here, I may not be quite a
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: zepp to move, But if not, then I would absolutely move.
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: That's a good point. What about and then this is
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: this is particularly relevant to to the rut. What if
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: it's um November three or fourth, or fifth, or somewhere
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: in that early November period, and you see something, you
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: observe a buck your afternos in the morning, would you
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: move actually that day if you saw something that he
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: moves off, would you get down right then and there,
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: get down at mid day and make an adjustment right then?
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: Or do you like to stick it out till the
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: next day. Um. I would say that made a lot
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: of moves that day, because most of the times your
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: conditions are gonna be a little bit more similar that
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: same day than they might be the following day. You know,
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: whatever it is, the temperature change, the pressure change, whatever,
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: it's usually somewhat different that next day. So I would
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: rather hunt those same conditions, and that visual sighting tells
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: me what area he's in right now. UM, So I'm
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: gonna make an adjustment on that as opposed to leaving
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: in having that twenty four hour period where who knows
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: where he's gonna go. I'm probably more out to make that,
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: make that move sooner rather than later. Yeah. Something I've
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: seen a little bit. I've seen it a handful of
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: times myself, and I've heard a lot of people talk about.
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: I'm curious if you've seen this too, is that sometimes
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: during the rut, when a buck's locked on a doll
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: or chasing the dough a dough, we'll we'll take a
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: buck through a certain area, let's say, passes by a
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: ago tree. You'll watch it from a hundred yards away,
- 1:20:03Speaker 1: and if you keep watching it, she might come back
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: through another time or two more times through other daily
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: it seems like sometimes these doughs i've got a buck
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: on them, they'll almost have a loop of sorts. And
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: so because of that, I've always try if I see
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: a dough take a buck somewhere once, I'm going to
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: try to get on that path and hope they've come
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: back through again. Um, have you seen the same thing?
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: Is that the kind of thing you would move on
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: in that kind of case? Yeah, I think I would
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: do the same. I haven't personally seen that. I have
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: her guys talk about it, Um, but yeah, I would.
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: It's kind of I would probably move for the same
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: reason as we just talked about them on the previous point.
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: Just that's what I saw. I'm gonna move there with
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: hopes of them coming back by. Even if it's a
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: little bit different movement than what you're specifically referring to,
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: I still know that I still feel that I'm my
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: chances are going to be better where I just sold them,
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: rather than just waiting it out where I'm at. Yeah.
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: You mentioned the fact that you have been hunting a
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: lot of new properties recently. Yeah, and you touched a
- 1:21:04Speaker 1: little bit I think on a couple of things you
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: probably do. You mentioned observation stands, Um, but can you
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: share anything else you do when you're trying to figure
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: out a new farm. I mean, I don't know. There
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: might be people heading out for their rut vacation. It's
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: their first time hunting this new farm. Maybe in there
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: here for a week or two in November. Anything you
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: do to try to learn in the rut. Yeah, that's
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: the biggest one that has already hit on. Just put
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: yourself in spots that you can see a lot and
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: learn from. Um. If not, if you don't have time,
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: maybe your hunt's a little bit shorter, maybe it's only
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: a week or something. You don't really have time to
- 1:21:40Speaker 1: you know, you can call it a waste of a
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: hunt if you're sitting an observation stand. But um, then
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: it comes down to aerial scouting, and you can just
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: look at a lot of the a lot of stuff,
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: the terrain features and everything that historically have been good
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: for you, whether that's looking for good funnels on the
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: property or ridges or whatever you'd like to hunt personally. Um.
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: But if if the guy does have the time, I've
- 1:22:08Speaker 1: learned so much about properties just being out there and
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: visually observing. And sometimes I've got permission on properties in
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: late October and I've i haven't been afraid to go
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: in there, spend one day, maybe it's a rainy day
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: where you're leftover, since not gonna be as bad, and
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: just put a lot of boots on it, put a
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: lot of miles on your boots and just walk around.
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: Check out how the train lays, check out where the
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: sign is, UM, trails are uh, where the food is UM.
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: I wouldn't be afraid to walk around if you can
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: do it on ideal conditions, like I said, with the
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: rain or high winds or something that'd be best. But
- 1:22:51Speaker 1: it's so much different seeing something, whether it's from a
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: stand or just walking around the property. Then it is
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: looking at aerial map and and that's what I like
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: to do more often than not. Yeah, what's the kind
- 1:23:04Speaker 1: of stuff that you're really keen in on when you're
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: walking around and actually scouting like that? Are you? You
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: know some guys really love rubline, some guys are obsessed
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: with a great scrape area or something like that. What's
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: the sign that you are really wanting to see that
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: will help you zero in on something? I like terrain
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: features that forced movement a certain way. Um. Like that
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: like ahead of a ditch would be a good example
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: of that because usually that comes with a couple of
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: different things. One, you pretty much know how the deer
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: going to travel through there, but two it usually gives
- 1:23:39Speaker 1: you a good direction to blow your wind too. So um,
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: And I like using creeks and ditches and stuff like
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: that for access. So I'm like, I like finding terrain
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: features that that kind of manipulate the deer movement or
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: forced the deer movement a certain way. Um. That's probably
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: one of my favorite ones. I'm not huge on hunting
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: scrape lines and road lines things like that, just because
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: I just by looking at without camera knowledge, I don't
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: know whether that's mills and night or some daytime or
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: anything like that. And they kind of seem to be
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: a little bit inconsistent as far as which bucks used
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: them when in my experience. So I like to look
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: at more terrain stuff like that rather than this actual
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: deer sign with with regards to scrapes and roads. Okay,
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: so you mentioned the head of a ditch. Can you
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: can you just better explain what you mean by that
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: in case people aren't familiar with where you're at, What
- 1:24:34Speaker 1: does that mean? And then when you say that deer
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: have to move around that, just explain what you mean
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: by that. Yeah, So ditches obviously can can be in
- 1:24:47Speaker 1: like in between a couple of ridges and the timber,
- 1:24:50Speaker 1: there's a ditch in between. And depending on the severity
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: of it, how stupid is how how much brush and
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: everything and it is. Deer are you know, somewhat lazy
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: sometimes and they're gonna take the easiest path. And typically
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: there's not very many heads of ditches like where that
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: ditch ends, but there's not gonna be a good deer trail,
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: and it doesn't have to be in real like um
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: steep train either. I have a lot of flat farms
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: that I hunt where there's just one small ditch and
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: they still just don't cross. It's way easier just to
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: walk around it then to cross it. Even though we
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: know deer can hop across it like it's nothing. Uh,
- 1:25:32Speaker 1: they still more often than not we'll walk around the
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: head of that. So I'll find spot like that to
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: set up where if there's trees along that ditch, I'll
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: set up you know, thirty yards going five yards off
- 1:25:43Speaker 1: of the head of that ditch, blow my wind back
- 1:25:46Speaker 1: down the ditch, and uh, I've I've killed some good
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: deer that way, just bucks cruising along the heads of
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: those and following those along the heads of those. It's
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: a good terrain feature, um that forces deer movement, and
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: you know exactly how they're going to use it. Yeah.
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: Can you Can you describe any other terrain funnels or
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: features like that that are worth keenan on during the run? Um?
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: A lot of times we hear these, oh, I don't
- 1:26:13Speaker 1: know what kind of this jargon like, people will say, oh,
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: there's a saddle or oh there's a you know, a
- 1:26:18Speaker 1: funnel or whatever. Do they say these things and then
- 1:26:21Speaker 1: someone hearing it might not know what that actually looks
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: like in the woods though, So it's always helpful. I
- 1:26:25Speaker 1: find it try to hear specific examples from people. Do
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: you have any that stand out that you can describe? Yeah? Um?
- 1:26:32Speaker 1: Another one I really like is like the inside corner
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: of a field. So let's say it's a an agg
- 1:26:39Speaker 1: field or even food plot or something that's got timber
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: on at least a couple of sides of it, let's
- 1:26:46Speaker 1: say two sides, and then it it opens up into
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: a big cornfield or bean field. That corner UM that
- 1:26:53Speaker 1: connects the two pieces of timber is a lot of
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: times a really good spot because like eyes, I think
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: has the tendency to set up on the edge of
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: the field so they see out in the field and
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: shoot out in the field, which isn't necessarily a bad strategy.
- 1:27:10Speaker 1: But I've seen a lot of times where mature bucks, especially,
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: they don't need to even if they can't see on
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: the field, they don't need to come out in the
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: field to know what's out there. You know, they can
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: walk that down wind inside corner and know exactly what's
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: been out there based on set. And so we see
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: that a lot where and sometimes we'll just set up
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: forty yards off of that inside corner, UM, forty yards
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: off the field edge back in the woods, and it's
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: a great shovel rouse. Like I said, especially for mature deer.
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: Um My buddy that I bought my property with. UM
- 1:27:48Speaker 1: he killed one of our target deer uh two nights
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: ago on an inside corner. He was doing just that.
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: Um just didn't come out. Was on a food plot.
- 1:27:59Speaker 1: He didn't come out food plot. You just walk in
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: the down wind side of it. Just just cruising and
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: he was able to kill him as it as a
- 1:28:06Speaker 1: great buck as one of the two targets we had
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: on that form. And we see that a lot so
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: infect corners. There are really good spots too for mature dear.
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: That's a great point. Speaking of the situation like that.
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: One of the another one of these general conundrums that
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: we find a lot is trying to keep deer from
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: winding you, so setting up in a way that you're
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: not gonna get winded, but at the same time thinking
- 1:28:31Speaker 1: about how a buck wants to use the wind. So
- 1:28:33Speaker 1: in that scenario, I can envision that could be challenging
- 1:28:36Speaker 1: if the buck wants to be, you know, downwind of
- 1:28:40Speaker 1: the food source, but you want to be back in
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: that cover where he's usually taking advantage of that. So
- 1:28:45Speaker 1: in that situation, your wind is blowing back into the
- 1:28:47Speaker 1: timber probably in some kind of way. How do you
- 1:28:50Speaker 1: go about trying to balance those two things in that
- 1:28:55Speaker 1: specific situation? Typically, and it's that what happened two nights ago,
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: I can say he was actually, my buddy is actually
- 1:29:03Speaker 1: closer to the food plot, and I think the wind
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: just happened to be blowing that they were so close
- 1:29:09Speaker 1: that the wind was blown over the top of them.
- 1:29:11Speaker 1: But uh, in general, we just like to be on
- 1:29:15Speaker 1: the inside corner, just be back off of the trail
- 1:29:19Speaker 1: or the route we think the mature buck is is
- 1:29:21Speaker 1: gonna be walking. So if let's say that wind is
- 1:29:25Speaker 1: blowing in the direction right to the inside corner from
- 1:29:28Speaker 1: the field out and you know, right into that inside corner,
- 1:29:33Speaker 1: the buck is gonna be downwind of it, and we're
- 1:29:35Speaker 1: gonna be downwind of his travel route. So we just
- 1:29:38Speaker 1: you know, sometimes we give up being able to see
- 1:29:40Speaker 1: what's coming out in the field. And that's a gamble,
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: of course, but we have seen more often than not
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: that's what the mature bucks to do. Sometimes they'll just
- 1:29:51Speaker 1: walk that inside corner first, the scent check before coming
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: out in the field. Sometimes I'll just keep going and
- 1:29:58Speaker 1: if there wasn't anything they they particularly liked about that
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: whatever they smell does, just keep going. But uh, they
- 1:30:04Speaker 1: almost always walked those inside corners, you know, especially if
- 1:30:08Speaker 1: it's just not they're not going off to feed or something.
- 1:30:11Speaker 1: They're just they're sent checking for dos um. But yeah,
- 1:30:15Speaker 1: in general, with regards to your question, I do a
- 1:30:19Speaker 1: lot of times try to keep the wind a little
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: bit in favor of the book. Um, there's a lot
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: of times it takes cutting it really close. UH can
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: provide an example from oh Man. I think it was
- 1:30:35Speaker 1: two thousand fourteen or fifteen. I was hunting a deer, well,
- 1:30:39Speaker 1: the deer, the same deer that was in that fight.
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: Iye film a deer I called George Brett. I noticed
- 1:30:47Speaker 1: from cameras and sightings that he would always follow the wind.
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: So on the north Land he would go north. On
- 1:30:56Speaker 1: the south wand he would go south um. You know,
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: he'd walk with the with the wind in his face.
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: And no matter what, even as we're getting later in
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: November and most of the deer were just always moving
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: in one direction towards the primary food source. He would
- 1:31:12Speaker 1: go somewhere else if if the wind wasn't right. And
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: so I knew this, and I knew with the north
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: wind that he would be walking north um. And my
- 1:31:22Speaker 1: only and I had to set up north of him
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: so he would be directly down wind of me as
- 1:31:26Speaker 1: he was walking. I essentially just moved over about fifty
- 1:31:31Speaker 1: yards um so that my north wind wasn't blowing directly
- 1:31:35Speaker 1: towards where I assumed he was being. Where I assumed
- 1:31:38Speaker 1: he was bedded, so he still had that north window vans.
- 1:31:42Speaker 1: I just moved over fifty yards and um, he came out.
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: It worked out perfect. I just he just didn't quite
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: get in the bow range. Like I said, that's an
- 1:31:51Speaker 1: example of really cutting it close. Um, you just have
- 1:31:55Speaker 1: to move over still, give the deer that that window
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: games that he wants, and how you expect to the move. Um,
- 1:32:02Speaker 1: but in the wind's not netally great for you. That's
- 1:32:05Speaker 1: kind of what you gotta do to get close to
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: him and understand how they like to move. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: that's a man. It is a tricky maneuver though, and
- 1:32:14Speaker 1: I can't tell you how many times I've tried that
- 1:32:16Speaker 1: and curse the weather man. When the weather man's forecast
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: was not quite right. You're seeing it spinning around. You're like,
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: oh god, no, please, don't don't blow anymore over there.
- 1:32:27Speaker 1: But but yeah, you're right. It does seem like many
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: times those bucks want that advantage, at least that perceived advantage,
- 1:32:35Speaker 1: as much as possible. So yeah, man, you have to think.
- 1:32:38Speaker 1: You have to think like that all the time, and
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: you'll find little ways that that the wind advantage is
- 1:32:44Speaker 1: good for the deer. But it's also good for you.
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: You'll you'll find ways you can set up you know,
- 1:32:49Speaker 1: right on. Maybe it's a train feature like the head
- 1:32:51Speaker 1: of a ditch or something like that, where the winds
- 1:32:55Speaker 1: still in his favor, but he still has to go
- 1:32:58Speaker 1: through this route or through this spot. Um, those are
- 1:33:01Speaker 1: probably the best situations where you know, the wind vange
- 1:33:04Speaker 1: is still good for him, he's still gonna move, but
- 1:33:06Speaker 1: he still can't detect you. Yeah, this is this is
- 1:33:09Speaker 1: totally unrelated to what we're just talking about. So this
- 1:33:11Speaker 1: is kind of off the wall, but just popped in
- 1:33:13Speaker 1: my head as I was thinking through some of the
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: scenarios you've been laying out here, um, and you talked
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: about hunting this one property. I think it's the farm
- 1:33:21Speaker 1: you has recently bought that's on that river. And a
- 1:33:24Speaker 1: river I think is a perfect example of a of
- 1:33:26Speaker 1: a wind break of sorts where you can blow your
- 1:33:28Speaker 1: wind over the river and you know, get away with
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: some things, and maybe there's a bend in the river
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: that a buck maybe thinks he's gotten his favor, and
- 1:33:34Speaker 1: then the bend of the river blows your wind over
- 1:33:36Speaker 1: the water and then he has to curl around and
- 1:33:38Speaker 1: you get a shot. Um, I could see that being
- 1:33:41Speaker 1: a pretty good one. But where that weird thought process
- 1:33:44Speaker 1: took me to as I was thinking through a river,
- 1:33:46Speaker 1: was thinking about I don't remember if it was last
- 1:33:49Speaker 1: year or where it was, but I seem to remember
- 1:33:53Speaker 1: a situation you're in where your property flooded? Is that right?
- 1:33:57Speaker 1: And I remember this right? Did you have a flooded
- 1:33:59Speaker 1: properties on point ye multiple last year? Actually? Okay, So
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: there's been a ton of rain in a lot of
- 1:34:06Speaker 1: places this year, a lot. I've heard a lot of
- 1:34:08Speaker 1: people talking about being in situations kind of like that
- 1:34:10Speaker 1: flooded out areas. Um, at the beginning of October here
- 1:34:14Speaker 1: one of the farms I hunt, I had food plots
- 1:34:16Speaker 1: completely underwater. I had trails completely underwater where I usually
- 1:34:19Speaker 1: can access parts of the farm that I couldn't. So
- 1:34:21Speaker 1: I had that a little bit this year. Um. We
- 1:34:23Speaker 1: just had a ton of rain this past week. So
- 1:34:25Speaker 1: I'm just thinking there might be people experiencing something like that.
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: Anything you learned about dealing with a flooded property, or
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: maybe how that would change the way someone should approach
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: their upcoming rut hunts, anything like that. Oh man, Um,
- 1:34:39Speaker 1: that's tough because I think every every property is gonna
- 1:34:42Speaker 1: be a little bit different. You my property, it was
- 1:34:46Speaker 1: completely the whole farm was underwater. Um, so the deer
- 1:34:50Speaker 1: had to move off to higher ground too. Other properties
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: that there was there was nothing that wasn't flooded on
- 1:34:57Speaker 1: our property. Um. And we we had some deer that
- 1:35:01Speaker 1: were there in the beginning of season, the flood happened
- 1:35:03Speaker 1: and they never showed back up. Um. So I don't
- 1:35:06Speaker 1: know if they just moved off and found the spot
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: they liked better and just never came back or what.
- 1:35:12Speaker 1: I'm assuming most situations aren't exactly like that, but UM, yeah,
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: I don't I don't know. I mean, that's a tough one,
- 1:35:22Speaker 1: just because I think it's it's hard to generalize something
- 1:35:27Speaker 1: like that. Um like that. Yeah, the hardest part for
- 1:35:34Speaker 1: us was, I think this may be a reason why
- 1:35:37Speaker 1: a lot of deer didn't move back, is all the
- 1:35:39Speaker 1: vegetation was either washed away or completely matted down, and
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: so all their betting, well it used to be nice
- 1:35:47Speaker 1: tall grass for them to have a safe betting spot
- 1:35:51Speaker 1: was gone and everything was just matted down and open.
- 1:35:54Speaker 1: So there's still there that cruised around there, But as
- 1:35:57Speaker 1: far as actually betting location, we'd lost a lot of
- 1:36:01Speaker 1: that just due to the flood, and the water sat
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: there for so long and it killed a lot of
- 1:36:05Speaker 1: vegetation and stuff like that, so we you know it
- 1:36:08Speaker 1: it affected our farm tremendously. It wasn't like the water
- 1:36:12Speaker 1: received and all the deer moved back in. It had
- 1:36:14Speaker 1: a pretty good effect on it throughout the rest of
- 1:36:16Speaker 1: the season. That's brutal. I imagined, like, when I think
- 1:36:20Speaker 1: about the scenario, the only silver lining that I can
- 1:36:23Speaker 1: come up with, and this will be different from farm
- 1:36:25Speaker 1: to farm, but I kind of wondered that there's there
- 1:36:28Speaker 1: might be some period of time when the water started
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: to recede where you get water created funnels where there's
- 1:36:34Speaker 1: these strips of high ground. Now deer are forced to
- 1:36:37Speaker 1: move through this narrower area, and maybe that's something you
- 1:36:40Speaker 1: can take advantage of. But that's the only potential silver
- 1:36:42Speaker 1: lining I can find. Yeah, no doubt, I mean, that's
- 1:36:46Speaker 1: all I'm saying. I think every every property is gonna
- 1:36:48Speaker 1: be a little bit different. If if you have a
- 1:36:49Speaker 1: property that has higher ground, and that's kind of a
- 1:36:51Speaker 1: no brainer. Um, there's going to be a higher concentration
- 1:36:54Speaker 1: of deer there, or at least deer using that area,
- 1:36:59Speaker 1: So that's uh, we just didn't have that luxury everything.
- 1:37:02Speaker 1: Everything was flat and everything is underwater all at once.
- 1:37:05Speaker 1: So that's a tough that's a tough situation. So I
- 1:37:08Speaker 1: think last year too, as I'm trying to remember back
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: on like Chasing November episodes, you couldn't hunt that farm.
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: Then you you had like a new project farm I
- 1:37:16Speaker 1: think you were talking about, and eventually you ended up
- 1:37:21Speaker 1: rattling in a buck somewhere, right, Is that how you
- 1:37:23Speaker 1: ended up killing a buck? Yeah, So I for work,
- 1:37:27Speaker 1: I my family and I had to move last year
- 1:37:30Speaker 1: a couple hours away. So my the only form that
- 1:37:34Speaker 1: I had to hunt back home because I lost permission
- 1:37:38Speaker 1: on all the other forms that I managed just because
- 1:37:40Speaker 1: I wasn't gonna be around to help, um, was the
- 1:37:43Speaker 1: flooded farm. So I was forced on brand new properties
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: where we moved to. So I had two or three
- 1:37:48Speaker 1: properties that were completely new to me, and they weren't
- 1:37:51Speaker 1: anything special. They were just, um, just kind of egg
- 1:37:56Speaker 1: forms with small strips of timber or little fingers of
- 1:38:00Speaker 1: timber stuff like that. The project farm was a cattle farm, um.
- 1:38:04Speaker 1: But the farm that actually killed on was essentially just
- 1:38:07Speaker 1: a big bean field, had some good cover in the neighborhoods,
- 1:38:10Speaker 1: some good timber um. But it just it just came
- 1:38:13Speaker 1: down to I mean, I wish I could tell you
- 1:38:16Speaker 1: there's a big stategy behind that one, but it came
- 1:38:18Speaker 1: to being in the rice about the right time and
- 1:38:21Speaker 1: not giving up on that property. I didn't have any
- 1:38:24Speaker 1: shooters on camera on that farm. I just knew by
- 1:38:27Speaker 1: looking at the neighborhood, driving around and looking at the
- 1:38:30Speaker 1: Ariel matt that there's gonna be good deer moving through
- 1:38:33Speaker 1: there in November, and just happened to be there in
- 1:38:36Speaker 1: the right spot that time when when a good buck
- 1:38:38Speaker 1: came out, he came out. Um had two hundred yards
- 1:38:43Speaker 1: away to or fifty yards away when I first saw him.
- 1:38:46Speaker 1: I was able to rattle at him. And that was
- 1:38:48Speaker 1: a situation where I had a wind break. I don't
- 1:38:50Speaker 1: like a lot of calling unless I have a good
- 1:38:53Speaker 1: wooden advantage or I have a visual on the deer. Um.
- 1:38:58Speaker 1: In that case, he was directly up wind to me
- 1:39:00Speaker 1: two yards and he I don't know if he knew
- 1:39:04Speaker 1: he couldn't get down wind or if he just didn't
- 1:39:08Speaker 1: care at that point. Um, there's November eleven, but fortunately
- 1:39:13Speaker 1: he just walked a line with the wind at his back,
- 1:39:16Speaker 1: walked two yards in, so that one that one worked out,
- 1:39:19Speaker 1: and that property actually flooded, but the water receded and
- 1:39:23Speaker 1: they started using that field a lot after that. And
- 1:39:26Speaker 1: so the reason you were saying that, the reason you
- 1:39:28Speaker 1: mentioned that windbreak is is probably because I'm guessing you've
- 1:39:32Speaker 1: seen the same thing I've seen, which is, oftentimes a
- 1:39:34Speaker 1: buck's going to want to approach a sound like a
- 1:39:36Speaker 1: grunt or a rattle from the down one side, right, Yeah,
- 1:39:40Speaker 1: almost always, unless like I said, they're just it's very
- 1:39:45Speaker 1: rut crazed and kind of just in the right mood
- 1:39:48Speaker 1: or um, they know they can't get down wind and
- 1:39:51Speaker 1: there they still believe that there's a fight going on
- 1:39:54Speaker 1: and there's another buck over there. Um. I usually would
- 1:39:58Speaker 1: like to call the deer when I I can see
- 1:40:00Speaker 1: them and go based off of how they react, or
- 1:40:06Speaker 1: I will blind call if I have a really good
- 1:40:08Speaker 1: wind vantage, like a creek or river behind me. Okay,
- 1:40:12Speaker 1: so walk me through then what that calling or rattling
- 1:40:15Speaker 1: sequence would be. Let's say you spot a big buck somewhere. Uh,
- 1:40:19Speaker 1: do you always grunt first? You always rattle first? Do you,
- 1:40:23Speaker 1: does something help you determine what you're gonna use, kind
- 1:40:26Speaker 1: of walk me through your whole thought process when it
- 1:40:28Speaker 1: comes to choosing what you're gonna do and then what
- 1:40:30Speaker 1: you actually do in that scenario. Yep. Um. Typically the
- 1:40:35Speaker 1: conditions like that, and usually that's based on wind speed.
- 1:40:42Speaker 1: So if it's really windy and I don't think he'll here,
- 1:40:45Speaker 1: they grunt or snort weaves, I will rattle at the
- 1:40:49Speaker 1: deer um typically, though, if if I know a deer
- 1:40:54Speaker 1: can hear me, I will start out with just a
- 1:40:56Speaker 1: ground I think that's the least uh intrusive sound or
- 1:41:01Speaker 1: at least challenging sound to a bucks. I wanted to
- 1:41:04Speaker 1: see how he'll react to that. Um. You don't typically
- 1:41:08Speaker 1: or I haven't typically seen dear really negatively react to
- 1:41:12Speaker 1: the grunt call. It's just something that I think they
- 1:41:15Speaker 1: hear more off and then they start wees or two
- 1:41:18Speaker 1: bucks fighting. So I'll start with that if I know
- 1:41:22Speaker 1: a buck can hear the grunt call, and then if
- 1:41:25Speaker 1: he doesn't respond to that, I will snort we's. I
- 1:41:28Speaker 1: love the snart wes call social mature dear. I don't
- 1:41:32Speaker 1: have um, let's just say I don't have too many
- 1:41:37Speaker 1: that just completely ignore it or get spooped by it,
- 1:41:42Speaker 1: They usually will somehow react to it. Um. Whether they
- 1:41:47Speaker 1: come all the way in or not, that's a different question,
- 1:41:49Speaker 1: but usually they that call means something to them. So
- 1:41:54Speaker 1: I used snart Wes a lot. Um. Rattling is kind
- 1:41:59Speaker 1: of a third option, and if if the deer doesn't
- 1:42:01Speaker 1: respond to either one of those, will rattle or I
- 1:42:05Speaker 1: will start off rattling if it's truly windy, Like I said, how,
- 1:42:09Speaker 1: what's the rattle sequence? Like? Is it long? Do you
- 1:42:13Speaker 1: just do fifteen twenty seconds and stop? What's your rattling
- 1:42:16Speaker 1: sequences typically look like? If I can see the deer
- 1:42:20Speaker 1: and see his reaction, I'll just I'll rattle, will make
- 1:42:23Speaker 1: sure that I'm hidden, whether it's I'm rattling on the
- 1:42:26Speaker 1: back side of its three or something like that, I
- 1:42:29Speaker 1: will just watch his reaction. I will keep I don't
- 1:42:31Speaker 1: until he makes a move, whether that's going away from
- 1:42:35Speaker 1: me or coming towards me. Um. I need him too
- 1:42:38Speaker 1: to be convinced that it is a really good fight,
- 1:42:42Speaker 1: like an actual brawl, that he needs to come in
- 1:42:44Speaker 1: and check out. Once he starts coming, I'll put him
- 1:42:48Speaker 1: away and get ready. If he obviously goes away. I'll
- 1:42:52Speaker 1: put him away too, just because obviously he didn't like it.
- 1:42:55Speaker 1: But sometimes you'll see a deer go away and he'll
- 1:42:58Speaker 1: come back around and check it out later, so you're
- 1:43:00Speaker 1: not always completely out of the game. If I'm blind calling, UM,
- 1:43:06Speaker 1: it's probably I would say thirty seconds of a pretty
- 1:43:11Speaker 1: hard hitting. Um. I have seen a couple of really
- 1:43:16Speaker 1: good fights, and it's hard to rattle as loud as
- 1:43:22Speaker 1: two mature books are fighting, so I like to hit
- 1:43:25Speaker 1: them almost as hard as I can for a good
- 1:43:28Speaker 1: toy to thirty seconds. Obviously, just making sure your eyes
- 1:43:32Speaker 1: are peeled and your heads on a swivel, because you
- 1:43:34Speaker 1: don't want to be hitting those things when the deer's
- 1:43:38Speaker 1: thirty yards away and con clearly see you know what's
- 1:43:41Speaker 1: going on, so you just have to constantly be looking around.
- 1:43:44Speaker 1: But UM, that's one thing I tell guys is not
- 1:43:47Speaker 1: to be afraid to hit them really hard. Most most
- 1:43:50Speaker 1: often I think guys aren't rattling loud enough. Yeah, all right,
- 1:43:55Speaker 1: So you gotta be honest with me on this one.
- 1:43:58Speaker 1: Have you smashed a finger doing a hardcore write of sequence?
- 1:44:03Speaker 1: I've drawn blood before. I can tell you that, right,
- 1:44:06Speaker 1: you're really getting after it. That's good. Yeah. And I
- 1:44:10Speaker 1: like to use heavy antlers. Um this it creates more
- 1:44:14Speaker 1: of that deep mass sound to him. Um. That's just
- 1:44:19Speaker 1: I think that makes a big difference to what about
- 1:44:23Speaker 1: speaking of aggressive tactics, what about de coin? Is that
- 1:44:26Speaker 1: something you ever pull out and try this time here?
- 1:44:30Speaker 1: I do not very often. I probably decoy once or
- 1:44:33Speaker 1: twice a year. And for me, it's all about the
- 1:44:36Speaker 1: property and the specific location on that property. If it's
- 1:44:40Speaker 1: property that has a lot of doves, I usually don't
- 1:44:43Speaker 1: think about de coin because I've had just too many
- 1:44:46Speaker 1: experiences where if that those are the first year to
- 1:44:49Speaker 1: come out, it's usually not a good thing. Those just
- 1:44:52Speaker 1: don't react very good to decoys, is my experience, especially
- 1:44:55Speaker 1: at least decourse. I don't I don't know that I've
- 1:44:58Speaker 1: ever used a dough deco way. Um. But if it's
- 1:45:02Speaker 1: an area where there's not a huge population, um, and
- 1:45:06Speaker 1: it's an area where the deer can see the decoy
- 1:45:11Speaker 1: a long waist, you know, you don't want the decoy
- 1:45:14Speaker 1: to surprise them. You know, they come around the corner
- 1:45:17Speaker 1: and there's a buck decoy standing right there. Um, you
- 1:45:21Speaker 1: want them to bill see it from across the field
- 1:45:24Speaker 1: and the other thing. The other key is just positioning
- 1:45:26Speaker 1: the decoy so that it's it's kind of like calling
- 1:45:30Speaker 1: the buck's kind of circle downwind of it. You want
- 1:45:32Speaker 1: to make sure that you can shoot the deer before
- 1:45:35Speaker 1: full it gets down wind. Yeah, yeah, that's it seems
- 1:45:39Speaker 1: right in line with a lot of things I've I've
- 1:45:41Speaker 1: seen a little bit. I've dabbled with it is u
- 1:45:45Speaker 1: picking at the right time to do it in the
- 1:45:46Speaker 1: right place is sometimes the biggest deal of all. Have
- 1:45:50Speaker 1: you got good success with it? Only once? I decoyed
- 1:45:54Speaker 1: in a buck once in Ohio and it was really cool.
- 1:45:57Speaker 1: It was really cool that it worked that way. Um,
- 1:45:59Speaker 1: But I never use it in Michigan because I just
- 1:46:01Speaker 1: think that these deer are just on edge and you
- 1:46:05Speaker 1: put something that out and it'd be would be done zo.
- 1:46:08Speaker 1: But I've used it in Iowa, Ohio and had a
- 1:46:10Speaker 1: little bit of success, So it's cool. Though. It's pretty
- 1:46:14Speaker 1: cool when they come in and find old bristles. I've
- 1:46:17Speaker 1: had some cool hunts over deco is. I just don't
- 1:46:20Speaker 1: use them. I don't think I've ever actually killed a
- 1:46:22Speaker 1: buck over decoy, but I've had some some good solid
- 1:46:25Speaker 1: bucks to come into him. Yeah, it was definitely one
- 1:46:27Speaker 1: of the more memorable kills I've had, just seeing it
- 1:46:29Speaker 1: play out just the way you imagine after watching it
- 1:46:32Speaker 1: on TV, you know, and it actually works out that way.
- 1:46:34Speaker 1: That was That was pretty cool. Um. So what about
- 1:46:38Speaker 1: let's let's talk a little bit more generically about hunting
- 1:46:43Speaker 1: the rut. One of the things you hear a lot
- 1:46:45Speaker 1: about is just putting in the time. You hear this
- 1:46:49Speaker 1: often almost the most important thing many times people say
- 1:46:52Speaker 1: about hunting during the rut is just being out there
- 1:46:55Speaker 1: sticking it out. Um, do you hunt all day? Do
- 1:46:58Speaker 1: you do midday? Sister? During the rut? What's thought on that?
- 1:47:02Speaker 1: I do? Um a lot of times this time of year, unfortunately,
- 1:47:07Speaker 1: and I have to at least catch up on a
- 1:47:10Speaker 1: little bit of work midday, So most often get down
- 1:47:13Speaker 1: for an hour or two, go by to catch up
- 1:47:16Speaker 1: on some work, and then get back in the stand. Um.
- 1:47:19Speaker 1: If I have situations where I know I can spare
- 1:47:22Speaker 1: the whole day, I love. I do love sitting all day.
- 1:47:24Speaker 1: I've had some great hunts where a lot of action
- 1:47:28Speaker 1: happens during those hours where most guys are like I said,
- 1:47:31Speaker 1: at lunch, Um, there's no doubt about. You just have
- 1:47:36Speaker 1: to put your time in. You're not gonna Sometimes you
- 1:47:39Speaker 1: do more damage by getting down, leaving and then coming
- 1:47:44Speaker 1: back in the same stand. You're way better off just
- 1:47:46Speaker 1: sitting there and sticking it out, bringing food with you,
- 1:47:50Speaker 1: whatever it takes. UM, so you don't have to get
- 1:47:53Speaker 1: down and come back in a couple of hours later,
- 1:47:56Speaker 1: you know, when you're just talking about my rug planes
- 1:47:58Speaker 1: in general, I want to spend as much time in
- 1:48:01Speaker 1: a tree as I possibly can. UM build things, true,
- 1:48:06Speaker 1: you can't can't kill them if you're not out there.
- 1:48:08Speaker 1: So UM, just just put the time in, for sure.
- 1:48:12Speaker 1: And that's what's all about. It is, but it's it's also,
- 1:48:16Speaker 1: at least from my experience, it's also easier said than done.
- 1:48:20Speaker 1: I don't know if you've experienced this, but when you're
- 1:48:22Speaker 1: out there and you're hunting as much as you possibly can,
- 1:48:25Speaker 1: you know you've got You've got four weeks in November.
- 1:48:27Speaker 1: For a lot of people, the first two weeks, the
- 1:48:29Speaker 1: first three weeks maybe are game time. You cashing on
- 1:48:33Speaker 1: your vacation days, you call in sick. You you know
- 1:48:36Speaker 1: you've done all your chores, so your wife's gonna be Okay,
- 1:48:38Speaker 1: if you're out there for day after day and you're
- 1:48:40Speaker 1: you're getting out there an hour and a half or
- 1:48:42Speaker 1: two hours before daylight, and you're sitting for twelve hours
- 1:48:45Speaker 1: or thirteen hours or whatever it is, and you do
- 1:48:47Speaker 1: it day after day after day, that is an absolute grind.
- 1:48:51Speaker 1: I mean, at least for me, it wears me down
- 1:48:53Speaker 1: to a pulp. Um, how do you handle that part
- 1:48:57Speaker 1: of it? How do you handle the men tool and
- 1:49:00Speaker 1: the physical fatigue of it all? Yeah, it is an
- 1:49:04Speaker 1: absolute grind. There's no way around that. I don't know
- 1:49:08Speaker 1: anybody that it's not like that for um. And sometimes
- 1:49:12Speaker 1: it's one of those things where just take one day
- 1:49:15Speaker 1: off and you're completely refreshed and you're ready to go again.
- 1:49:18Speaker 1: And you probably look at it look back and like, man,
- 1:49:21Speaker 1: why not even take that day off? But um, it
- 1:49:23Speaker 1: would be amazing this how even one hunt off is
- 1:49:27Speaker 1: a is a big refresher. So I won't be afraid
- 1:49:29Speaker 1: to do that every once in a while. But I
- 1:49:33Speaker 1: like to tell myself that this is this is one month,
- 1:49:36Speaker 1: This is the month, you know, November, this is a
- 1:49:38Speaker 1: month I wait for all year round. You know it's
- 1:49:41Speaker 1: gonna be gone before I know. It. Um, while it
- 1:49:45Speaker 1: seems like a grind while you're living it day to day,
- 1:49:48Speaker 1: it's gonna go really fast and you're gonna wish you
- 1:49:51Speaker 1: had some of those times you didn't hunt back um
- 1:49:54Speaker 1: once November is gone. So that's what I'd like to
- 1:49:56Speaker 1: tell myself. It is a mental thing for sure, um,
- 1:50:00Speaker 1: and it's a grind, But just the other thing is
- 1:50:02Speaker 1: just try to enjoy the experience as much as possible
- 1:50:06Speaker 1: and keep things in perspective. Um. I know a lot
- 1:50:09Speaker 1: of guys that probably put too much pressure on themselves,
- 1:50:12Speaker 1: like I I gotta kill like you know, I gotta
- 1:50:15Speaker 1: gotta there's They put too much pressure on themselves to
- 1:50:18Speaker 1: to kill a deer or to be out there, and
- 1:50:20Speaker 1: they lose a little bit of enjoyment of it. So
- 1:50:24Speaker 1: just kind of look at the big picture, stepping back
- 1:50:26Speaker 1: a little bit and realize what what truly you're getting
- 1:50:30Speaker 1: to do. I think is another important mental aspect of
- 1:50:34Speaker 1: getting through it. So true, and every year I need
- 1:50:37Speaker 1: to re remind myself of that, because I'm definitely the
- 1:50:40Speaker 1: guy that puts that pressure on and I avidly find
- 1:50:44Speaker 1: myself sitting that truly. God, damgn it, why isn't this happening,
- 1:50:47Speaker 1: what's going on? What if this is I'm not going
- 1:50:49Speaker 1: to kill anything this year, and I always have to
- 1:50:51Speaker 1: have like that. I don't know, mental self therapy session.
- 1:50:57Speaker 1: Talk myself through and remind myself exactly what you said.
- 1:51:00Speaker 1: This is supposed to be fun. Enjoy it. Yeah, put
- 1:51:04Speaker 1: you take advantage of November, take advantage of this. But
- 1:51:06Speaker 1: also don't sit out there, you know, bitching a moan
- 1:51:09Speaker 1: into yourself because it's not going the way you wanted to. Um.
- 1:51:13Speaker 1: Try to enjoy it for what it is. And then
- 1:51:14Speaker 1: I do find and probably you've seen this too, that
- 1:51:18Speaker 1: as soon as you get down on yourself at all,
- 1:51:20Speaker 1: as soon as you start to lose hope, that's when
- 1:51:24Speaker 1: the big buck shows up and you weren't paying attention,
- 1:51:26Speaker 1: or that's when he cruised through when you were too
- 1:51:28Speaker 1: busy on your phone or whatever it is. You almost
- 1:51:32Speaker 1: set yourself up for failure as soon as you mentally
- 1:51:34Speaker 1: check out. Yeah, it's like like a lot of things,
- 1:51:38Speaker 1: it's mental. The mental game is a huge part of it, um,
- 1:51:43Speaker 1: And as long as you understand that, you can get
- 1:51:47Speaker 1: yourself through it. But it's all about just keeping keeping
- 1:51:50Speaker 1: your attitude positive and and just really realizing what you're
- 1:51:55Speaker 1: doing and not take it for granted and just enjoy it. Yeah,
- 1:51:58Speaker 1: that's that's why we do this. Ultimately, it's because it's
- 1:52:01Speaker 1: such a good time. So it's to be a shame
- 1:52:03Speaker 1: not to enjoy it while we're out there. Yeah, that's right.
- 1:52:06Speaker 1: And like I said, once, once it's gone, it's you.
- 1:52:09Speaker 1: You just want it back. Um, you know, once once
- 1:52:12Speaker 1: the season's over, it's the depression sets in. You gotta
- 1:52:15Speaker 1: wait another ten months to happen. And it's if you
- 1:52:19Speaker 1: get that in perspective, you'll you'll probably hunt as often
- 1:52:21Speaker 1: as you can while you can. Yeah, very true. So
- 1:52:25Speaker 1: with all that being the case, I need to slip
- 1:52:27Speaker 1: out and go try to kill a big buck right now. Actually, so,
- 1:52:30Speaker 1: do you have any final parting words of advice or
- 1:52:34Speaker 1: final words of wisdom for folks as they head out
- 1:52:36Speaker 1: for their run hunts. Be safe, like I said earlier, Um,
- 1:52:41Speaker 1: there's just there's no dear, that's that's worth you know,
- 1:52:44Speaker 1: some of the bad things can happen, and building off
- 1:52:47Speaker 1: the point we just talked about, enjoy it and keep
- 1:52:49Speaker 1: things in perspective. Have fun. Um, you know, it's there's
- 1:52:55Speaker 1: there's a lot of I think you probably see it
- 1:52:57Speaker 1: just as much as anyone. There's there's a lot of
- 1:52:59Speaker 1: maked ativity and division, it seems like in in our
- 1:53:03Speaker 1: hunting world these days, and just trying to keep positive
- 1:53:07Speaker 1: and and really realize what this sport is about and
- 1:53:10Speaker 1: and um so I just have fun and be safe. Yeah, yeah, great,
- 1:53:16Speaker 1: great reminders. If people would like to see what you
- 1:53:19Speaker 1: guys are up to and all the different shows that
- 1:53:21Speaker 1: you're producing in your content, where can folks find that? Um,
- 1:53:26Speaker 1: I'm not a huge social media guy, but I'd say
- 1:53:29Speaker 1: social media is probably the best way. We have a
- 1:53:32Speaker 1: forty one North Media Instagram account and uh, you know,
- 1:53:37Speaker 1: obviously you can follow us individually on Facebook and Instagram.
- 1:53:42Speaker 1: And then some of the shows that were producing a
- 1:53:45Speaker 1: lot of the Real Tree shows around Real three three
- 1:53:47Speaker 1: sixty five, so a lot of the shows on there
- 1:53:49Speaker 1: were producing, and of course they tell you can follow
- 1:53:52Speaker 1: on YouTube the Middistel website Real three three five. Um,
- 1:53:59Speaker 1: a lot of the smart TV apps, uh is where
- 1:54:02Speaker 1: you can find Real Tree three sixty five, So we're
- 1:54:04Speaker 1: kind of everywhere. Um, but those would be the main
- 1:54:07Speaker 1: spot perfect well. I definitely would recommend anyone listening to
- 1:54:11Speaker 1: check those out. Yesterday morning, my son woke up and
- 1:54:15Speaker 1: first thing it is, he's he's almost two years old.
- 1:54:19Speaker 1: The first thing it is, he ran over to our
- 1:54:21Speaker 1: TV shelf and he grabbed his Buck grunt call off
- 1:54:24Speaker 1: of the little hanger who started grunting on it. And
- 1:54:26Speaker 1: then he starts saying bu but which is how he
- 1:54:28Speaker 1: says buck, and that means he wanted to watch some Bucks.
- 1:54:31Speaker 1: So we turned on the TV and Real Tree happened
- 1:54:34Speaker 1: to be the first app I saw, so I popped
- 1:54:36Speaker 1: that up and I put on the recent episode you
- 1:54:39Speaker 1: guys had with Bill Winky killing that surprise Buck and
- 1:54:42Speaker 1: uh Everett, my son, Everett loved it. He was very
- 1:54:45Speaker 1: impressed with Bills with Bill's recent deer, so it's definitely
- 1:54:50Speaker 1: worth watching. That's pretty cool. I love hearing that stuff. Yeah,
- 1:54:53Speaker 1: it's it's a good time. So, Jared, thank you so
- 1:54:56Speaker 1: much for taking the time to do this. I really
- 1:54:58Speaker 1: enjoyed our chat so much. I appreciate the opportunity, Mark,
- 1:55:01Speaker 1: and thanks for all you do for us. Hey, it's
- 1:55:04Speaker 1: my pleasure. Good luck hunting you too. Thanks. All right,
- 1:55:08Speaker 1: and that's a wrap, my friends. I'm gonna tell you
- 1:55:10Speaker 1: this once and that's it. Turn off. The podcast and
- 1:55:16Speaker 1: get out hunting. This is the one time I'm gonna
- 1:55:18Speaker 1: tell you not to listen to more podcasts because novembers here,
- 1:55:22Speaker 1: this is it. We dreamed of it all year. Just
- 1:55:24Speaker 1: like Jared was saying, just like Dan and I were
- 1:55:25Speaker 1: talking about the beginning, this is our super Bowl. Take
- 1:55:29Speaker 1: advantage of it. Hunt hard, put in the work, do
- 1:55:33Speaker 1: the things you know you need to do. If you've
- 1:55:35Speaker 1: been listening to this podcast, you have all the tools,
- 1:55:37Speaker 1: you know the things to do, you know the things
- 1:55:41Speaker 1: on the two list. It's just a matter of executing
- 1:55:43Speaker 1: on it. And I know you can do it, and
- 1:55:44Speaker 1: you're having an awesome season and you have a good time.
- 1:55:47Speaker 1: I believe in you. I hope you have a great,
- 1:55:49Speaker 1: great set of hunts coming up. And until next time,
- 1:55:53Speaker 1: stay wired to hunt.
