- 0:01SPEAKER_00: Welcome to Five Good Minutes.
- 0:03SPEAKER_00: You're listening to today's inspirational message on the book of Genesis with Brady Randall.
- 0:12SPEAKER_01: Well, today we're starting a series where we're looking at navigating the challenges of life by looking through the lens of Joseph in the Bible.
- 0:20SPEAKER_01: And specifically this week we'll be looking at Genesis 37, and here's what we read in verses one through four.
- 0:26SPEAKER_01: Jacob lived in the land where his father had stayed, the land of Canaan.
- 0:31SPEAKER_01: This is the account of Jacob's family line.
- 0:34SPEAKER_01: Joseph, a young man of seventeen, was tending the flocks with his brother, the sons of Billah and the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives, and he brought their father a bad report about them.
- 0:45SPEAKER_01: Now Israel loved Joseph more than any of his other sons, because he had been born to him in his old age, and he made an ornate robe for him.
- 0:54SPEAKER_01: When his brothers saw that their father loved him more than any of them, they hated him, and they could not speak a kind word to him.
- 1:01SPEAKER_01: So right away at the start, we see the dynamics of playing out of resentment and favoritism.
- 1:09SPEAKER_01: Now I know that every family has their issues, and this biblical family is certainly no different.
- 1:14SPEAKER_01: From the beginning of time to the first children of Adam and Eve, there have been sibling rivalries.
- 1:20SPEAKER_01: That's what siblings do.
- 1:22SPEAKER_01: I know that because I was the older brother growing up, and as the older brother, I knew the exact right buttons to push to get my brother in trouble.
- 1:32SPEAKER_01: I would get his temper going, I would rile him up.
- 1:35SPEAKER_01: I would push him to the point of chasing me with a wooden mallet and a pool net on several occasions.
- 1:42SPEAKER_01: And so here is Joseph, age 17, tending the flock, and he brings his father a bad report about them.
- 1:48SPEAKER_01: And you know how this works.
- 1:50SPEAKER_01: There's a little bit of tattletaling, and this is what my brother or sister is doing.
- 1:55SPEAKER_01: But his father showed favoritism to him, and that's probably why he believed this report.
- 2:01SPEAKER_01: But this report further upset and alienated the other brothers.
- 2:05SPEAKER_01: So he pits himself as the favored one or the one who's doing what's right.
- 2:09SPEAKER_01: I'm in the right, they're in the wrong.
- 2:12SPEAKER_01: And verse 3 makes it perfectly clear that Joseph is loved and preferred over the other brothers.
- 2:19SPEAKER_01: And Joseph's father, because of his love for him, brings him an ornate robe or a robe of many colors.
- 2:25SPEAKER_01: And by giving him this special coat, the father was showing that he was to be the leader.
- 2:31SPEAKER_01: And as you can imagine, when brothers saw, or that it became evident that he was loved more than the other brothers, they hated him, and they wouldn't speak a kind word to him.
- 2:42SPEAKER_01: Now this stuff doesn't just happen in families, it's happened here, uh, way back in Genesis 37.
- 2:48SPEAKER_01: There's resentment, there's hatred, there's favoritism all rearing its ugly head, and this will set the stage for the rest of the chapter that will play out.
- 2:57SPEAKER_01: But I want to end today by having us pause and think about the envy and jealousy that appears in family dynamics.
- 3:05SPEAKER_01: Maybe as you hear this today, your family relational issues jump out at you and you say, This is me, this is us.
- 3:12SPEAKER_01: This describes my relationship with my family or siblings.
- 3:16SPEAKER_01: Or maybe you don't have physical siblings or you have a great working relationship with your siblings, but you're aware of what someone else currently has against you.
- 3:25SPEAKER_01: And if so, I think the words of Jesus are timely.
- 3:28SPEAKER_01: In Matthew 5, 23 to 25 in the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus says that if you're about to leave your gift at the altar, and there you remember that a brother or sister has something against you, you must leave your gift there.
- 3:42SPEAKER_01: First be reconciled to your brother or sister.
- 3:45SPEAKER_01: Why?
- 3:45SPEAKER_01: Because if you've come to faith in Jesus, you have been reconciled by the costly death of Jesus.
- 3:51SPEAKER_01: And if Jesus can extend grace and mercy and forgiveness to you and me, who are undeserving, he invites us.
- 4:01SPEAKER_01: He actually commands us to do the same with those around us.
- 4:05SPEAKER_01: Envy and resentment left unchecked will destroy us.
- 4:09SPEAKER_01: So today, give it to Jesus and in his strength, and as far as it lies within you, try to be at peace with everyone.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: Thanks for joining us here today.
