Transcript
- 0:00[SPEAKER_02]: I like that you're hitting me with this moment and you know, I realize that kind of doesn't evolve the English.
- 0:04[SPEAKER_02]: It involves them as the losing team, yeah, extremely prominent when you're involved.
- 0:09[SPEAKER_02]: Welcome to fanside in its draft show.
- 0:11[SPEAKER_02]: I am your host Adam Liner of Along with Emeline and Cody Williams.
- 0:15[SPEAKER_02]: This is the show where we draft our favorite things, items, moments, people, stars, athletes, what have you at the end?
- 0:23[SPEAKER_02]: Let us know who did it best.
- 0:25[SPEAKER_02]: Today we are drafting MLB Postseason Moments.
- 0:29[SPEAKER_02]: As the baseball playoffs rage, happy October we finally made it, we want to remember the moments that make the playoffs great.
- 0:37[SPEAKER_02]: I will take the middle pick.
- 0:39[SPEAKER_02]: I'll let Cody go first.
- 0:41[SPEAKER_02]: Emma go third with the wrap round.
- 0:42[SPEAKER_02]: I suspect that Cody's going to be taking and targeting some moments I have no interest in, which is part of the reason why I want to give him the first overall pick, because there are moments
- 0:52[SPEAKER_02]: Cody that deserves love, but I don't want them, and I don't want to disrespect them.
- 0:55[SPEAKER_02]: I will let you kick this off.
- 0:57[SPEAKER_02]: What is your number one pick in the MLB postseason moments direct?
- 1:01[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, this feels like self protection on your end because obviously I'm going to the 2004 ALCS.
- 1:07[SPEAKER_01]: You see the banners behind me.
- 1:09[SPEAKER_01]: We're going with Dave Roberts is steel.
- 1:11[SPEAKER_01]: The moment that absolutely set this all off, Kevin Mallar gets a single, you definitely don't want Kevin Mallar on the base path, base paths, goodness.
- 1:18[SPEAKER_01]: And you put Dave Roberts in there.
- 1:21[SPEAKER_01]: Everyone knows that he is stealing second base and it doesn't matter because he still takes it.
- 1:25[SPEAKER_02]: sets up a top all game David Ortiz walks it off later as a red socks fan I think as a baseball fan that's just one of the moments that's going to live indelibly in baseball memory yeah wasn't even on my list no obviously it is extremely notable I wasn't going to take it I think I will be quick that to you with my first pick I will take the eighties knocking at the red socks a couple of days ago no that's also not really a top tier moment I'm not grabbing it
- 1:52[SPEAKER_02]: I am going to go Yankees, though, how about Derek Cheater, Mr. November, the clock strikes mid-night.
- 1:57[SPEAKER_02]: The World Series being played a November no longer weird, but in 2001 it was a very non-standard occurrence.
- 2:05[SPEAKER_02]: Geer goes to the short porch rounds the basis, cement is reputation as they clutch engine the Yankees do not finish the job in that World Series, making it a series with a complicated history of moments for me, but I think that one is pretty undeniable.
- 2:18[SPEAKER_02]: Emma, what is your first pick?
- 2:21[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I was going to say I felt like the peacekeeper here because I was not going red socks or Yankees, but then I realized this one actually does kind of involve the Yankees.
- 2:30[SPEAKER_00]: It's going to go way back 1960 World Series game seven, Bill Mazurowski.
- 2:36[SPEAKER_00]: So the only walk-off home run in a World Series game seven ever the Pirates win 10-9.
- 2:44[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, for just pure baseball history, that has to be at the top, I think, just an all-time moment.
- 2:50[SPEAKER_00]: And there's a reason people still talk about it, even though it was, you know, the people who talk about it weren't even alive when it happened.
- 2:56[SPEAKER_02]: I like that you're hitting me with this moment.
- 2:58[SPEAKER_02]: And you know, I realize that kind of doesn't involve the Yankees.
- 3:01[SPEAKER_02]: It involves them as the losing team.
- 3:02[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, extremely prominent when you're involved.
- 3:05[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, well, but it wasn't the Yankees actually the the thing that made the moment great was not the Yankees, they just happened to be there.
- 3:12[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah.
- 3:13[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 3:14[SPEAKER_02]: The Yankees had a cameo in this huge heartbreaking world series defeat.
- 3:19[SPEAKER_02]: You have a wrap around selection.
- 3:21[SPEAKER_02]: How do you start the second wrap?
- 3:25[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, I am going to go a little bit more recent just because, you know, I figure I should pick something that I was actually alive for when it happened, I'm going to go with the Chicago Cubs Breaking the Curse 2016 World Series game seven again, 108 years.
- 3:46[SPEAKER_00]: extra innings over Cleveland to end that streak.
- 3:49[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, and the whole rain delay and the whole thing to somehow made it even crazier and even for, you know, a fan of a different NL Central team.
- 3:58[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, you had to you had to love that for the Cubs.
- 4:01[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, everything that Cubs have done since then, I will plead the fifth on that.
- 4:05[SPEAKER_00]: But the 2016 moment was was pretty great.
- 4:09[SPEAKER_01]: This is so very in the crowd to on top of that.
- 4:11[SPEAKER_01]: Like what makes it better than that?
- 4:13[SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely.
- 4:15[SPEAKER_02]: There's a weird one too in retrospect, we're only 10 years removed.
- 4:17[SPEAKER_02]: I feel like game seven gets a lot of love.
- 4:19[SPEAKER_02]: Coming back from a three one deficit doesn't so much, that kind of gets obscured.
- 4:24[SPEAKER_02]: That was a wild, cubs world series in a wild way to end, curse, drought, whatever you call it.
- 4:32[SPEAKER_02]: I will take with my second pick, I hate to keep lobbing grenades at Cody and I'm not gonna do it again, I don't think, but through Buckner's legs.
- 4:40[SPEAKER_02]: You know game six eighty six is my second round pick the closest the boss and Red Sox by far got before they actually did and the drought in O4 This is obviously a moment of shame.
- 4:52[SPEAKER_02]: So if he was a little bit weird in the second round to draft You know
- 4:56[SPEAKER_02]: Equal parts triumphant embarrassment.
- 4:57[SPEAKER_02]: It wasn't necessarily the meds grabbing the lead from the red socks on a three-run shot It was a mookie Wilson dribbler up the line But buckner eventually had a sense of humor about it.
- 5:07[SPEAKER_02]: He appeared in an episode of curburethusiasum Catching babies falling out of windows.
- 5:11[SPEAKER_02]: That makes it feel palatable for me here
- 5:14[SPEAKER_02]: I could take, you know, Ray Knight scoring or, you know, the Gary Carter loop single into the gap or whatnot, but I'll take the moment of sadness and just say, the whole rally, but the Buckner play is the really indelible one, Cody your second round pick and then the wrap round.
- 5:31[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, first off, I can't get mad at you because I actually did have it on my list because if we're talking about unforgettable moments, it's definitely up there.
- 5:38[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, in the interest of trying to win the draft, I did have it on my list.
- 5:41[SPEAKER_01]: Thankfully, I don't have to take it.
- 5:43[SPEAKER_01]: And much like Emma's playbook on her second pick, I'm going to do something that I definitely remember, and that's game 7 in the 2014 World Series.
- 5:51[SPEAKER_01]: Madison Bumgarner coming in with a five inning relief appearance.
- 5:54[SPEAKER_01]: We just watch Chris Sale and Game 3 of the Wild Guard come in and show some heroics on a day's rest.
- 6:01[SPEAKER_01]: Madison Bumgarner was an animal though.
- 6:02[SPEAKER_01]: They don't build guys like Madison Bumgarner in 2014 anymore and it's the type of legend making stuff to come in and get a five out say it just days after you pitched a full game.
- 6:12[SPEAKER_02]: And it's crazy we're saying they don't build guys like that anymore because that was not that long ago.
- 6:16[SPEAKER_02]: We were alive, you know, it was not the 60s and I thought you were around for the 60 world series.
- 6:21[SPEAKER_02]: But I guess I have to read the expectation, Cody, your third round selection, move it back down.
- 6:28[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, 100% I think we're going to just keep taking subtle jabs at one another, but I promise this is not because the Yankees law is because it was a great moment.
- 6:35[SPEAKER_01]: Luis Gonzalez, the single up the middle in the 2001 World Series, walk it off with that.
- 6:40[SPEAKER_01]: His reaction, I think, is what's most burdened in my head, him jumping out of the batter's box because he knows that he just won the Arizona Diamond Baxle World Series.
- 6:48[SPEAKER_01]: That's a moment that I won't forget.
- 6:50[SPEAKER_02]: It was a great moment.
- 6:51[SPEAKER_02]: If you wanted a jab of me again, you could have taken Maran or Vera throwing a bunter in the center field to proceed it.
- 6:56[SPEAKER_02]: But you took the great moment and I do appreciate that I could go, I could do it all, you know, from this point forward Yankees and Red Sox troll draft.
- 7:04[SPEAKER_02]: I'm not going to do it.
- 7:06[SPEAKER_02]: My third round pick is going to be Roy Halliday's No Hitter, which I think maybe again, somewhat lost to history, which is wild considering it was.
- 7:14[SPEAKER_02]: It's only happened twice.
- 7:15[SPEAKER_02]: been Roy Halliday and Don Larson's perfect game of the world series, but I guess D.S.
- 7:19[SPEAKER_02]: against the reds, maybe the weight of history is diminished somewhat, but Roy Halliday, a master craftsman, there was nobody, you know, we're not talking about pumping 99, we're not talking about, you know, the bum garner, like postseason streak of durability, inevitability, Yoshinobu Yamamoto is kind of bend that guy now, how they're just a good old fashioned pitcher, and some nights everything works, and his legacy obviously.
- 7:44[SPEAKER_02]: He was lost far too soon.
- 7:45[SPEAKER_02]: Did not make it to his own Hall of Fame induction.
- 7:47[SPEAKER_02]: But this moment stands out for me.
- 7:49[SPEAKER_02]: It's just an all-time.
- 7:50[SPEAKER_02]: Are you kidding me?
- 7:51[SPEAKER_02]: You know, watching modern play?
- 7:52[SPEAKER_02]: Like, I didn't, you know, talk about things I never thought I would see.
- 7:56[SPEAKER_02]: I thought I would read about the Larson perfect game and never see a playoff no hitter as long as I lived.
- 8:01[SPEAKER_02]: And for the confluence of events to happen, like that, I couldn't believe it at the time.
- 8:06[SPEAKER_02]: Carlos Ruiz also happened to make the final throw for the last out over a loose bat.
- 8:12[SPEAKER_02]: like all of the impediments sort of summed up baseball for me like they're going to throw a million things at you it's going to feel impossible and then at the end of the day anything really is possible Emma close out the third round and wrap it around to the fourth.
- 8:27[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
- 8:27[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to stay a little bit more recent here.
- 8:30[SPEAKER_00]: I'm also staying away from the Yankees after you rightfully, you know, just owned me on that first one.
- 8:37[SPEAKER_00]: It definitely did include the Yankees.
- 8:39[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to go 2015.
- 8:43[SPEAKER_00]: ALDS game five, the Jose about Tsta Batflip, that was, I mean, first of all, it came after one of the strangest innings in the history of postseason baseball, I think, and then he hits the Homer against Texas, just launches the bat into orbit.
- 9:02[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it's a great visual, so I got to go with that one.
- 9:06[SPEAKER_02]: That was on my list as well.
- 9:07[SPEAKER_02]: I appreciate you taking it off Sam Dyson, of course, Dyson, the only vacuum that doesn't use suction.
- 9:12[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know if you guys remember that.
- 9:13[SPEAKER_02]: Add, you can cut that, they're not a sponsor.
- 9:16[SPEAKER_02]: What is your fourth round pick to wrap it around?
- 9:20[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, I, I'm going to have to go with one that this is actually very meaningful to me personally.
- 9:27[SPEAKER_00]: And I probably could have waited until the end to take it because I don't think anyone else is going to take it, but it's it stands out in my mind.
- 9:33[SPEAKER_00]: I have to go with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
- 9:38[SPEAKER_00]: 2013 National League Wildcard, the Quato game.
- 9:42[SPEAKER_00]: It was the pirates are finally back in the playoffs for the first time in 20 years.
- 9:49[SPEAKER_00]: They blacked out PNC Park.
- 9:51[SPEAKER_00]: It was loud.
- 9:51[SPEAKER_00]: The whole place was shaking and they're chanting Johnny Quato's name and then he drops the ball on the mound and the whole
- 10:03[SPEAKER_00]: You know, and that technically it was the last time the pirates won a playoff game, but they haven't won a playoff series since they won the World Series in 1979, which that's a little depressing, and I don't need to turn this into a therapy session, but that moment,
- 10:20[SPEAKER_00]: is something that for me a lifelong pirate's fan who had never in my lifetime seen anything like that with the team that I spent my whole life cheering for.
- 10:30[SPEAKER_00]: That is a moment.
- 10:31[SPEAKER_00]: There's a reason that it still gets talked about even though it was now 13 years ago because they haven't given them anything to cheer for since then but hopefully that changes soon.
- 10:41[SPEAKER_02]: And that is a crowd that deserves better.
- 10:44[SPEAKER_02]: I will never forget watching that black out and Russell Martin's sort of taking it in.
- 10:49[SPEAKER_02]: Also, Dyson, the only vacuum that doesn't use suction if you guys didn't hear me the first time.
- 10:53[SPEAKER_02]: You guys can cut that one to you if you want.
- 10:54[SPEAKER_02]: Not a sponsor, right?
- 10:56[SPEAKER_02]: My fourth round pick.
- 10:59[SPEAKER_02]: I'm gonna go with this.
- 11:00[SPEAKER_02]: So this is, I wanna close it out in the fifth.
- 11:02[SPEAKER_02]: I have a lot of my play that I like using my last pick on something just I know means more to me than the crowd that people are gonna take.
- 11:09[SPEAKER_02]: This one though is a personal memory, although not one of my teams necessarily.
- 11:14[SPEAKER_02]: The David Freeze game in 2011, game six.
- 11:18[SPEAKER_02]: I just remember so clearly, I'm in college, I'm watching a bar with a Rangers fan who thinks he's closing in on his first world series
- 11:28[SPEAKER_02]: This is maybe gonna sound weird and not relatable, but stand out to me for two reasons.
- 11:34[SPEAKER_02]: One, because you sort of, when you're in that interstitial period between youth and adulthood, you kind of get this thing through your head of like,
- 11:44[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know if I'm gonna see any more special moments.
- 11:48[SPEAKER_02]: Like the special moments are over.
- 11:50[SPEAKER_02]: Like this weird vibe of like I have so many childhood memories and then now I just feel standard practice.
- 11:55[SPEAKER_02]: And I'll never forget just being completely shocked by both the late game tire, the Lance Birkman game time hit, the freeze walk off to the center field, the hometown kid in St. Louis.
- 12:07[SPEAKER_02]: And I also remember it for the reason of I jinxed that Rangers fans so hard.
- 12:12[SPEAKER_02]: And just like saying like I couldn't envision it not being over so I remember saying things like congrats on your first world series You did it like like so I remember it mostly because it was a reminder that okay There's still gonna be some sports moments to take your breath away even if you think you're an adult and you're over the magic You're not and then too I just I've never had such a jinxing power to my life and I feel awful I'm so I axailed so hard when they won the 2023 world series because I was like
- 12:39[SPEAKER_02]: They got one.
- 12:40[SPEAKER_02]: You know, I didn't do it to him forever.
- 12:42[SPEAKER_02]: He got to enjoy that.
- 12:44[SPEAKER_00]: So you've been carrying that around.
- 12:45[SPEAKER_00]: You've been carrying that around all these years.
- 12:48[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I don't really speak anymore either.
- 12:50[SPEAKER_02]: So I didn't get to reach out in 2023, but I'm sorry.
- 12:52[SPEAKER_02]: I did that.
- 12:53[SPEAKER_02]: And again, as they just kept tying the game I kept being like, oh my god, I did it to him again.
- 12:57[SPEAKER_02]: Like, they're really, this is going to be one of the worst losses of all time.
- 13:00[SPEAKER_02]: So I apologize, but that wasn't unbelievable moment.
- 13:03[SPEAKER_02]: Cody, you're fourth round pick and then the fifth round.
- 13:07[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so fourth round, I'm going to go super recent because I think our recency bias might be like working against us here.
- 13:13[SPEAKER_01]: Mago Rojas is home run in the world series of 2021 five man.
- 13:17[SPEAKER_01]: I think that and this will be a theme in my fifth round pick as well, but I think just the the unlikely hero in the postseason is something that's always going to appeal to me.
- 13:26[SPEAKER_01]: Just the guy that you didn't expect it.
- 13:28[SPEAKER_01]: There literally anyone in the Dodgers lineup was probably who you would rather have at the plate at that moment than Miguel Rojas.
- 13:34[SPEAKER_01]: And he steps up and just cranks one out to keep the Dodgers alive and go on to win back to back world series.
- 13:39[SPEAKER_01]: Like that's the type of stuff that feels cinematic feels like you're going to remember it forever.
- 13:45[SPEAKER_01]: And yeah, I don't want it the fact that it just happened last year for it to to cloud our judgment.
- 13:50[SPEAKER_01]: That's what a great moment that was.
- 13:52[SPEAKER_02]: I 100% agree, it's one of the more improbable.
- 13:55[SPEAKER_02]: Again, the reminder that these moments can come out of nowhere and take you by surprise, and they're still magic.
- 14:01[SPEAKER_02]: Like the worst hitter in the Dodgers lineup is the thing that stood between the Blue Jays capturing the first World Series in 30 plus years at a repeat, who is and what is your fifth round pick?
- 14:13[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, another unlikely guy, 1988 game one of the world's series.
- 14:16[SPEAKER_01]: Kurt Gibson comes up to play and dude can't move.
- 14:20[SPEAKER_01]: Dude like watching a run around the base is still amusing to me because it's very clearly like that's uncomfortable for him to be able to do at that point and just hits one over the wall.
- 14:28[SPEAKER_01]: Like, uh, what a moment and like just one of the most unlikely home runs that you're ever going to see.
- 14:33[SPEAKER_01]: And there's a reason even though that like,
- 14:35[SPEAKER_01]: You know, it was game one.
- 14:36[SPEAKER_01]: It wasn't like a game that like swung the entire series or anything like that, but there's a reason we still talk about it Because it's the stuff of legends and like I just think that's a very cool moment.
- 14:44[SPEAKER_01]: Not a Dodgers fan, but you know, we will we'll take two Dodgers to finish this off here
- 14:48[SPEAKER_02]: I can't believe I gave you an Emma gave you the Kirk Gibbs in home run in the fifth round.
- 14:55[SPEAKER_02]: You just won the drafts up, but we'll do the rest of it for gigs.
- 15:00[SPEAKER_02]: And here's where I'm just going to take an odd one that I know is not coming off anybody else's board.
- 15:05[SPEAKER_02]: This might be my favorite somewhat forgotten world series game of all time.
- 15:11[SPEAKER_02]: Game 5, 1996, Yankees and Braves, the Yankees were down to 0.
- 15:16[SPEAKER_02]: two home games going to Atlanta, one, three, one, four in dramatic fashion on the gym layer, it's homework.
- 15:22[SPEAKER_02]: Game five is Andy Pettett throwing a shutout, one nothing, John Wellen in for the save, liner into the right center field gap, time run on third, the only thing standing between that one nothing game being blown and the end of the game, he's going back with a three, two lead is pulling you on a bum leg running into the gap.
- 15:40[SPEAKER_02]: in Atlanta makes the catch staggering, right arm extended.
- 15:45[SPEAKER_02]: Not one of the greatest plays in World Series history, but just the moment that for me embodies the aches dynasty and the grit and attitude and any given game, any given player can step up, fight through pain, et cetera.
- 15:59[SPEAKER_02]: So,
- 16:00[SPEAKER_02]: Game 5-96, not at all time passing the eyes of many for me, it's the most fun Yankees dynasty game, and so I'm picking it as a fan of that franchise.
- 16:10[SPEAKER_02]: Emma, close us out and get the Yankees taste out of all the Angry Viewers mouths.
- 16:16[SPEAKER_00]: Well, you know, I think that I went with my personal memory, the Quedo game.
- 16:22[SPEAKER_00]: I should have saved that for the last round, but a big part of why I didn't, I thought this was still, I didn't think this was still going to be available for me.
- 16:30[SPEAKER_00]: But.
- 16:31[SPEAKER_00]: How about, it feels weird to do a draft like this and not include the moment when Reggie Jackson became Mr. October, 1977 World Series game six, believe it or not, I was actually not alive for that one either.
- 16:47[SPEAKER_00]: But, you know, Homer's three times on three consecutive pitches from three different Dodgers pitchers to win the championship.
- 16:55[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it seems like you can't
- 17:01[SPEAKER_01]: It's against my religion to pick that one so I couldn't I couldn't quite get there.
- 17:05[SPEAKER_02]: I just I had too many Yankees moments to pick no I mean, I that's not You guys have a great history.
- 17:12[SPEAKER_02]: We'd love for them to have a better present.
- 17:13[SPEAKER_02]: Hey, who won this draft frankly?
- 17:15[SPEAKER_02]: I think I got to go with Cody for stealing the Kirk Gibson Homer in the fifth round But hey, maybe you love the Yankees.
- 17:20[SPEAKER_02]: Maybe you love personal stories.
- 17:22[SPEAKER_02]: Let us know way in for Emily Lincoln and Cody Williams I am Adam Wanderiff take care and enjoy the drafting
