Latest / Rusty's Garage / The Motorsport Brief - Christmas with Damien Power
Transcript
- 0:02A listener production.
- 0:04What's more daunting, stand-up comedy or holding it flat around the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway?
- 0:11We're about to find out.
- 0:14Sort of.
- 0:15Merry Christmas, everybody.
- 0:16Rusty here.
- 0:17For this ep of the short cast, I thought it would be good to have a bit of a laugh, use a long bow to connect it to motorsport, and take a break from the usual news and interviews.
- 0:26We will get to our guest in just a moment.
- 0:29Quick thanks to all of you for the feedback on the Mark Winterbottom feature episode two.
- 0:34We released a two-parter with him in early December.
- 0:37If you haven't heard it, check it out and let your mates know.
- 0:40They might enjoy it as well over the holiday period.
- 0:43He talks candidly about leaving Team 18 and how he feels now with a little bit of time to reflect, plus his excitement for rejoining Tickford and the chance to pair up with Cam Waters there, memories of his Bathurst win, the championship title, and how Owen Wilson had to be called back to the voiceover booth when Frosty picked up a cameo in Cars 2.
- 1:05He loved working on that movie.
- 1:07We have a few short casts rolling out over the break too, so keep an eye out for notifications on those, including the seat maker who's worked with all sorts of great racing names.
- 1:18And what he does is world class.
- 1:21More recently, he got to shape a seat.
- 1:24for Brad Pitt.
- 1:25That is a cool industry story, that one.
- 1:28On the line in Queensland is Damien Power.
- 1:30Now, a few years ago, he and I had the chance to work together.
- 1:33It was a lot of fun.
- 1:35If you haven't seen his stand-up comedy before, check him out on Instagram, at Damien Power.
- 1:39Try and find him at a show near you.
- 1:42You will possibly know him from appearances in things like the awesome working dog comedy, Utopia.
- 1:49Damien has a bit of news on something that he's up to as well, and we'll get to that.
- 1:53But what has this all got to do with motorsport, I hear you say?
- 1:56He is Will Power's brother, and he has been stateside, Damien, for some very special moments in Will's career.
- 2:04I thought we'd get him on for a chat and a giggle.
- 2:06Hello, mate.
- 2:07Merry Christmas.
- 2:09G'day, Rusty.
- 2:10Good to see you, man.
- 2:11Merry Christmas to you too.
- 2:12Thanks for having me.
- 2:14It's great to catch up with you.
- 2:15Will's been on the pod before.
- 2:17Take people there.
- 2:17What was Christmas like in the power household growing up?
- 2:21And are the family all together again this year?
- 2:25What was it like?
- 2:26Well, a lot of fighting.
- 2:30That I can definitely tell you.
- 2:32Are we allowed to swear on this thing?
- 2:33Yeah, of course you can.
- 2:34Go for it.
- 2:35Go for it.
- 2:35It's Christmas.
- 2:35Okay, yeah.
- 2:36No, it was fucking nuts.
- 2:38I mean, I don't know.
- 2:39There was four boys and just chaos and, yeah, I mean, Will's not, yeah, I don't know if you can tell, but Will's crazy.
- 2:49He's a crazy dude.
- 2:50Yeah.
- 2:52We'd steal the go-kart out of Dad's garage and take that around the residential areas there and get out like two strokes until the cops came and stuff like that.
- 3:03The neighbours called me up, tried to have a go at me for letting off a firebomb in their yard.
- 3:07Oh.
- 3:09Don't try this at home, kids.
- 3:12Yeah, no, it was pretty wild growing up there, yeah, in Toowoomba.
- 3:16Love it.
- 3:17What is in the water in Toowoomba, right?
- 3:18All these great things have come from there, a lot of motorsports, success and so on.
- 3:23Sport, yeah, yeah, for sure.
- 3:25Yeah.
- 3:26Just loneliness.
- 3:31There's just not a lot to do, man.
- 3:34There's nothing.
- 3:34Yeah.
- 3:35Look, Toowoomba's gotten a lot better, you know.
- 3:38There's...
- 3:40There's a lot more there now, but when we were there, there was really nothing to do.
- 3:44So I guess you do tend to get in a car or something.
- 3:47You know what I mean?
- 3:48Or run fast.
- 3:49You have to get out.
- 3:50Yeah, you have to get away.
- 3:52Aussies shorten everything, right?
- 3:54So are you Damo?
- 3:57What nickname did the family give you?
- 3:59And did you have one for Will that the motorsport audience isn't aware of?
- 4:04Well, I mean... Well...
- 4:10He's hesitating.
- 4:11He's hesitating.
- 4:12I'd like to say Chicken Hawk because if you look at him from side on, he didn't like that one much.
- 4:18So hopefully this one doesn't get back to him.
- 4:22Did you ever, I mean, you talked about the go-kart there before, did you ever race anything?
- 4:26And, I mean, is that motorsport love that's in the family, is there a little bit of that in your veins?
- 4:32I really thought it was all so boring myself.
- 4:34Really?
- 4:35Yeah, yeah.
- 4:36I guess I was just surrounded by it, so I found it pretty boring.
- 4:40But I did get in cars.
- 4:42Yeah, we got in the go car.
- 4:44We got a Datsun 180B.
- 4:47Is that right?
- 4:48Or is it a 120B?
- 4:48Or a 1600.
- 4:49I can't remember.
- 4:50I can't remember.
- 4:50Yeah.
- 4:51Yeah, I don't know if that's one.
- 4:52We had a VB Commodore.
- 4:54These were done up for touring cars, you know, and they were the dirt track cars.
- 5:00Yeah, we took the Datsun out at Ipswich Motorway and, yeah, I mean, I liked it.
- 5:05It was fun.
- 5:06All the comedians in Edinburgh this year had a go-kart race for Aaron Chan.
- 5:11I don't know if you know Aaron Chan.
- 5:12How cool.
- 5:12He does a lot of really great stuff.
- 5:14Yeah.
- 5:15And his birthday and...
- 5:17I won.
- 5:18Congrats.
- 5:21So I guess it's in the blood.
- 5:22It is in the blood.
- 5:24Before I went out there, yeah, the guys were like, you better fucking win this.
- 5:29You better win.
- 5:30If you don't win this, it's fucking embarrassing.
- 5:33So there's a lot of pressure, yeah, because it was just like vicariously, I should in theory be fast in a go-kart.
- 5:39Yeah.
- 5:40So, yeah.
- 5:41Were you always a joker, mate?
- 5:42And when did the idea of pursuing comedy as a career kind of become a thing for you?
- 5:47Yeah, I mean, I was, yeah.
- 5:49I mean, everyone in our family is very funny, really.
- 5:54You know, especially dad.
- 5:56There's all those times you're laughing at him, to be fair.
- 5:58But yeah, we're all very funny.
- 6:01And I got a degree and did all some boring stuff in IT.
- 6:07This is in my early 20s and I just didn't think that was really for me, you know.
- 6:11And so, yeah, in my early 20s, I decided to give all the things that I was doing as a, you know, screwing around and stuff in school and getting in trouble and all that.
- 6:21I thought, you know, maybe there's something to this.
- 6:23And so, yeah, it was pretty early on that I got into it.
- 6:26So I've been going for a long time.
- 6:28Yeah.
- 6:28Yeah.
- 6:29They talk in business, right, in the motor racing business, I mean, about the struggle for drivers in the early days.
- 6:35You would have seen that with Will acutely.
- 6:38How that stuff invariably shapes them as athletes and as competitors and so on.
- 6:44How tough was that comedy road for you given – I mean, that's more or less midlife crisis stakes, isn't it?
- 6:49You've gone and got a degree.
- 6:51You could have been quite easily earning a comfortable salary in that IT space, and you've turned hard right, mate, haven't you?
- 6:57yeah yeah you do wonder sometimes might be time to get back to fixing the printer you know what i mean
- 7:09Was it tough?
- 7:09It's not easy, man.
- 7:11Yeah, yeah.
- 7:12Look, the thing is that the comedy's gotten easier.
- 7:18You know, like I really think this comedy special that I'm putting out is a good one.
- 7:26It's high quality and it was hard earned, you know, working all the jokes really and that whole process has gotten easier.
- 7:35It was harder earlier on.
- 7:37It's just you're more scared.
- 7:40There's higher risk.
- 7:41You're failing more.
- 7:42It's more embarrassing.
- 7:43It's just humiliating.
- 7:45But the career part of it is always...
- 7:49precarious, you know, and, and, um, it's up and down and it's all, it's all over the place.
- 7:55And that's really the part that's hard.
- 7:57Uh, the, the, the, the actual doing of it, um, has gotten a lot easier and I put a lot of, a lot of work in, I guess.
- 8:03So,
- 8:04Cool, cool.
- 8:05We'll chart a bit more of your career here in a second.
- 8:07Alone in the Crowd was the last one.
- 8:10Just tease a little bit about the new special, where people can find it and- It'll be free on YouTube, although I'll put like a- It's a crazy story, actually.
- 8:18The management in spectacular fashion and public fashion went bankrupt that were producing it.
- 8:25Yeah, some big names too and they that aren't getting paid and oh yeah, yeah, it's crazy.
- 8:32So the people that shot my special haven't been paid the crew as a result of that.
- 8:37So there is a there is a link to contribute to the special.
- 8:40I mean, it's not a charity.
- 8:41It's just a way of sort of paying for what you're watching.
- 8:44Nice.
- 8:45But this special, yeah, the last one was a bit of a best of and there's other specials on my YouTube.
- 8:52But this one is just my latest stuff from the last couple of years.
- 8:56I toured it to the UK and toured it all around Australia and worked it up, you know, put a lot of time into it.
- 9:01And it's really like just the very best bits and stuff.
- 9:05So, yeah, feel good about it.
- 9:07I think people will like it.
- 9:08Hopefully they fucking watch it.
- 9:13We want to encourage that too, right?
- 9:14Yeah, yeah.
- 9:16Your brother's performed on some incredible stages, mate, from Indianapolis Motor Speedway, I mean, the hometown hero, if you like, at Gold Coast Indy back in the day, Melbourne Comedy Festival for you, Edinburgh Fringe and so on.
- 9:28I mean, what is that like in your world?
- 9:32He steps onto the stage and has to perform how –
- 9:35daunting is that?
- 9:36How adrenaline charged is that?
- 9:38And just like a car racer, it's quite a long parallel I'm trying to draw here.
- 9:43But if things aren't going right, he's got to change it up.
- 9:46The team's got to change it up.
- 9:47In your case, I guess, if you're feeding off the audience and you don't feel like it's going as you planned, I guess you have to change tack too.
- 9:53Oh, absolutely, yeah.
- 9:55I mean, I think a good comedian does.
- 9:58And, like, it is a bit like Will talks about tracks and being able to look at them and just tell very quickly what the track's about and what's dangerous and good and fast and slow and everything, you know?
- 10:13And that does remind me a bit of an audience.
- 10:15Like, now that I'm, like, 20 years in, it's very quick to go out and just sort of go...
- 10:21you know, these guys are this certain way.
- 10:27On the Gold Coast, you know, they're a certain way.
- 10:31And no, every audience is kind of different and it kind of reminded me when Will was talking about that stuff, it reminded me a lot of you get better at reading it
- 10:39You know what I mean?
- 10:40And like I can get to an audience now and turn up and go, oh, shit, well, I'm not opening with that joke and I'm not doing this and that or I might be high energy, lower energy.
- 10:48And that's really what you get better at is like knowing what the audience will take and being able to push that further and stuff.
- 10:57And I'm sure it's the same with Will and Trax, like I'm given any given day, the heat, the cold, the rain, the da-da-da-da-da.
- 11:04Yeah.
- 11:05Yeah.
- 11:05When it's a festival, right, where you are in the queue of comedians coming out, does that affect things as well?
- 11:14I think I've heard a couple of people talk about that, knowing how the audience is with a presenter, a comedian, one or two before you, and how that might impact what you're about to do and so on.
- 11:26Yeah, absolutely.
- 11:27You know, if the guy before you has done a bit about something that you're about to talk about, for example, that can, yeah, you just have to, oh, man, sometimes like if it's on TV, I mean, they're the really tough gigs.
- 11:40Because on TV you actually submit a script of what you're going to say.
- 11:45So they've got to kind of, you've got to sort of get stuck in it.
- 11:50But, you know, live you can do whatever, but when it's on TV, like I've seen some horror stories, you know, where guys have been placed in the order and live they bomb because they've been put after someone talking about the same thing.
- 12:03A quick break on this edition of Rusty's Garage.
- 12:06Stick around.
- 12:07More of our fun Christmas special ep with Damien Power on the other side of this.
- 12:15You're listening to The Motorsport Brief, our garage shortcast.
- 12:18A little Christmas special for you with comedian Damien Power, Will Power's brother.
- 12:24Actually, he likes to think of it the other way around.
- 12:27Brothers, hey?
- 12:27Let's get back to the convo now.
- 12:31I mentioned in the intro about even that little cameo on Utopia.
- 12:35What is it like working with those guys?
- 12:38Neil Crompton tells a story about working with Rob Sitch and Co. when they did the celebrity race at the Grand Prix all those years ago.
- 12:47And he reckons the dinners, he would be, you know, sore from laughter and so on.
- 12:54I mean, that show...
- 12:56It must have been a lot of fun, mate, was it?
- 12:58Yeah, they were great.
- 12:59They're very casual.
- 13:01They're just like, yeah, yeah.
- 13:02They're just like, yeah, yeah, sit there and, oh, yeah, that was good.
- 13:05Yeah, but all right, let's keep going.
- 13:06They're just shooting.
- 13:07They're going.
- 13:08And he's just having a yarn the whole time, Rob.
- 13:10He's just like, yeah, no, this is what my dad was, this and that, and I grew up here and, yeah, we used to really personable guy.
- 13:17Okay.
- 13:17Like super, yeah, charismatic, I guess, yeah.
- 13:21But they were just like, yeah, yeah, just shoot it there and, yeah, oh, well, I guess we fucking got that.
- 13:26Like, it's really low key.
- 13:30That leads me to the next thing about sticking to script, right?
- 13:33I was very lucky once to interview, for the grand total of 10 minutes, Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly about Talladega Nights.
- 13:41It was one of the funniest things.
- 13:42Oh, awesome.
- 13:43I loved it.
- 13:44It's one of the best things I've been lucky enough to do, seriously.
- 13:47And...
- 13:48I said to them at the end, how much of the movie is to script and how much do you just sort of free will kind of thing?
- 13:55Damien, I might not get the percentages right here, but I think it was like 30 to 40%.
- 14:00They just kind of free will.
- 14:01They go off script and invariably that ends up funnier than what they perhaps had first planned.
- 14:08Yeah, yeah.
- 14:08There's a very different tone to something that's genuinely funny.
- 14:12improvised or like, yeah, yeah.
- 14:17You can see it.
- 14:18And as an audience member that maybe doesn't have their eye trained for it, but you feel it subconsciously that it's genuine.
- 14:25And that's the best stuff, especially on film.
- 14:27Can't beat that.
- 14:28Yeah, that's right.
- 14:30And that's really the craft of it.
- 14:31And that's where huge with stand-up is that you, like, I never script what I'm going to say.
- 14:36I just know roundabout what I'm going to say.
- 14:39So I think a lot of people in stand-up, yeah, they have that ability to make it appear like they're making it up.
- 14:47That improv thing intrigues me.
- 14:49Back in the Sports Tonight days, in my early time at Channel 10 there,
- 14:54The boss of the show would make a number of us, reporters and presenters and so on, go along to improv classes.
- 15:00If he felt that you were going to be nervous in that live space, that it would be a good way for you to be more fluid when it came to live TV.
- 15:09They never sent me, so perhaps, Damien, they thought it'd be a bloody waste of money.
- 15:14Yeah, don't send Greg Russ to the improv class.
- 15:17Exactly.
- 15:17But was that a self-taught thing for you?
- 15:19Did you go and learn that somewhere?
- 15:22I've done loads of training, yeah.
- 15:25Have you?
- 15:25Heaps of, yeah, like acting training and improv classes and all that.
- 15:30But the stand-up thing you just have to do.
- 15:33There's really no – they do classes and stuff, but really they're just –
- 15:37Helping you sit down and write a thing and then encouraging you to get up and do it because it's so terrifying for people the first time they do stand up.
- 15:45But you just have to do it.
- 15:49I mean, I'd like to think all the acting training stuff because, you know, I do a lot of that stuff as well.
- 15:54As well, yeah.
- 15:55I've done a lot of live shows that aren't stand up stuff that are like plays and stuff.
- 16:00And I've been shooting films and stuff lately.
- 16:04Actually, I just shot a film with Will playing himself.
- 16:06Excellent.
- 16:07Exploring his... Yeah, it's actually not a comedy.
- 16:09It's a drama.
- 16:10Tell people about that.
- 16:11Yeah, that's a short film that we just shot.
- 16:14I'm just editing it together.
- 16:16So I've been screenwriting and shooting stuff a lot as well.
- 16:20Yeah, I'm in it as well.
- 16:22Nearly killed me, to be honest.
- 16:24Did it?
- 16:24It was one of the most... Oh, it was one of the most...
- 16:28strenuous.
- 16:29Like I've done some directing.
- 16:30I shot like an hour of really ridiculous little films before this, but this is, this was, um,
- 16:38Just, you know, everything sits on your shoulders if you're direct to everything.
- 16:41Like, oh, it's windy.
- 16:42Where do we move the sound and the vision because of the sunlight's at this angle?
- 16:46And, you know, this guy's not feeling well.
- 16:48So the performance, you know, how do we get that?
- 16:50And it's like in time before we move on to the next thing.
- 16:53And we've only got two hours.
- 16:54It's just like...
- 16:55Huge.
- 16:56Never ending.
- 16:57It's raining.
- 16:58Now it's not.
- 16:59How do we match it up?
- 17:00And it's, yeah, it's full on, but it's awesome.
- 17:04It's a really amazing medium.
- 17:06I think you and I had a conversation about this off camera some years ago about your want to do this.
- 17:13That's super that you've done this.
- 17:16Just tease a little bit, if you can, about when it might be out and what people can kind of expect.
- 17:22This sounds fantastic.
- 17:23Well, I really don't know what to do with it, which I probably should have put more thought into before shooting it.
- 17:28LAUGHTER
- 17:31Because like I said, it's not a comedy.
- 17:33There's funny moments in it.
- 17:34The idea was to shoot something extremely naturalistic with all non-actors playing themselves.
- 17:41So it's me and Will in our family home exploring Will's retirement.
- 17:47Potentially.
- 17:48He's not actually retired.
- 17:51So, yeah, it's pretty dark.
- 17:54Okay.
- 17:55Actually, I'm not even joking.
- 17:56Yeah.
- 17:56It's funny as well because we get, you know, there's a guy in it who was Will's engineer when he was in the Formula Four days, Trevor Owen, if you can get a more Bogan name.
- 18:07It's Trevor and Owen.
- 18:09That's his fucking name.
- 18:10It's not just Owen and Trevor.
- 18:12It's Trevor Owen.
- 18:13And he's got one of Australia's fastest tyrannas.
- 18:18Super.
- 18:19Yeah, it's naturally aspirated.
- 18:22Okay.
- 18:23Yeah, yeah, as he tells me.
- 18:25Naturally fucking aspirated.
- 18:26Naturally aspirated.
- 18:28Yeah, it's fast.
- 18:29Fucking like this, like he's...
- 18:32He was amazing, by the way, in the film.
- 18:35He loved it.
- 18:37He just hung around and said, oh, fucking hang around.
- 18:39I'll have a look myself.
- 18:40Yeah.
- 18:41Like he was awesome.
- 18:43So everyone's playing themselves, but it's not a doco, but it's playing and blurring the lines between documentary and film.
- 18:52It's a film.
- 18:53Okay.
- 18:53It's not a documentary at all, but it's extremely...
- 18:56Natural.
- 18:57Yeah.
- 18:58Watch this space.
- 18:59Couple to finish here.
- 19:00You're ahead on Facebook.
- 19:01Will's leading the race in terms of Insta followers.
- 19:04Socials, mate, can be a brutal place at times.
- 19:08Is it a source of material for you?
- 19:09Do you have a thick skin?
- 19:10Do you switch off and so on?
- 19:12Definitely switch off.
- 19:13Good.
- 19:14Encourage everybody to switch off.
- 19:15Switch off, yeah.
- 19:18You cop a lot and everyone does.
- 19:20And I know Will does.
- 19:22Yes.
- 19:22And it's easy to get caught up into it.
- 19:26I don't keep the apps on my phone.
- 19:28I keep it strictly for work.
- 19:30I take it pretty serious, to be honest.
- 19:31That's great advice.
- 19:33Honestly, it's like it's...
- 19:35If you want to be creative, you can't have your phone on.
- 19:39That's just it.
- 19:40And the apps just become a way of just constantly, yeah, I really don't like it but it's great for, but what it is incredible for is being great for my career because the stuff I do isn't really for TV.
- 19:53I'm not finding it as I go along and if people watch this latest special, they'll see why it isn't on TV.
- 19:59Yeah.
- 20:00So me putting my stand-up out directly on social media has been huge for me and I sell out my shows now and that's really to do with just putting clips out on social media.
- 20:12That's been the biggest boost.
- 20:13Yeah.
- 20:14Yep, yep.
- 20:15Theourpower.com is where you can go.
- 20:17You'll also find 60-plus episodes in there of neurotic news, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts for that very funny pod, details of live shows that Damien's just been talking about when they're in a city near you, plus that awesome new special.
- 20:32Just tell people what it's called again.
- 20:33It's going to be called Not So Funny Now, is it?
- 20:36Watch out for that and give a little if you can.
- 20:38Damien talked there before about the production.
- 20:40So good luck with that.
- 20:43We want to finish with the shittiest Christmas present you've ever received.
- 20:47And is there a little something you hope Santa delivers on the 25th?
- 20:52Probably spending it with Dad, I reckon.
- 20:54Oh, that's harsh.
- 20:59I shouldn't have said that.
- 21:00That's really mean.
- 21:01He's a good guy.
- 21:03No, no, no.
- 21:04He's a good guy.
- 21:05He's just mental.
- 21:06He's the subject of some of your material at times though, isn't he?
- 21:09He's the subject of about fucking an hour of my material.
- 21:11There should be a special just for him.
- 21:15No, no.
- 21:17Yeah, no.
- 21:19He's a funny guy, Dad, and he's just fucking crazy, and that's where Will gets it from.
- 21:25So that's the truth.
- 21:26That's the truth.
- 21:27We love his success.
- 21:28The fact that he's been the champion there on more than one occasion, won the Indy 500, had a really good crack at the title this year and went down to, I think, to Nashville there.
- 21:39So we hope he has a great...
- 21:412025, but most importantly, all the best to you as well.
- 21:44Good luck with the special.
- 21:45Thank you for coming on to talk about it.
- 21:48And just generally, it's been great to catch up and have a little giggle before Christmas.
- 21:51Thank you.
- 21:52Good on you, Rusty.
- 21:53So good to see you, mate.
- 21:54Thanks for having me.
- 21:55Yeah.
- 21:55Have a great Christmas.
- 21:56Good on you.
- 21:58That is it for today.
- 22:00I hope you enjoyed that.
- 22:01On behalf of our little team here at Listener and Rusty's Garage, including Link, Tom, Rudy and MJ, Merry Christmas to you and all of your family and friends.
- 22:11Hope it's a safe and prosperous one for you.
- 22:14Thank you for listening during the year and for all of your feedback, especially for the guests.
- 22:19that you would like us to get on.
- 22:21Keep those suggestions coming.
- 22:23A few of you have asked for Robbie Farr and Jock Goodyear from Speedway.
- 22:26We will do that in the new year.
- 22:28And for no particular reason, we've looked back through the library and realised that we haven't had Larry Perkins or Dick Johnson on yet.
- 22:36We need to correct that, and that is part of our...
- 22:39Christmas wish list here for 2025.
- 22:41We're going to ease off the throttle a little over the next few weeks, but we will be back into it very, very soon.
- 22:48I'm going to be at the historic GP in Topor in New Zealand in the coming weeks.
- 22:52Roberto Moreno, Russell Ingle, Stephen Richards, Murph, Steve Millen, and a whole lot more will be there, along with Tony Quinn's epic six-wheel Tyrrell.
- 23:02We will definitely get some content from there for you to enjoy.
- 23:06Have a safe and happy
