- 0:00Speaker 1: Care for what you google. Welcome to the ned polity. Hi,
- 0:06Speaker 1: this is Nick Ostasiu, lead editor and writer on Mall
- 0:10Speaker 1: shadow Lord. And you're listening to Aggressive Negotiations. Well, hello,
- 0:18Speaker 1: and welcome to Aggressive Negotiations. We're just so excited to
- 0:22Speaker 1: be here, just two Jedi masters kicking back in a
- 0:25Speaker 1: galaxy that's slightly familiar, but maybe through just a different vision.
- 0:31Speaker 1: I'm just one of your hosts, Matthew rushing and with
- 0:33Speaker 1: me as he is every single episode is none other
- 0:37Speaker 1: than John Mills, John Jedi Master, John Mills. How are
- 0:41Speaker 1: you doing tonight? In fact, your eyes look a lot
- 0:44Speaker 1: bigger than normal.
- 0:45Speaker 2: You know. And the thing is, I'm just having a
- 0:47Speaker 2: hard time with my lightsaber because they just can't decide
- 0:49Speaker 2: what color it wants to be. Matt It's kind of
- 0:52Speaker 2: driving me crazy right here. You know. It's my lightsaber
- 0:56Speaker 2: mood ring. That's really what it is. Is. I've gone
- 1:00Speaker 2: head and just embrace that, and that is.
- 1:03Speaker 1: What there are those who call me Tim.
- 1:08Speaker 2: That rappit's sign to mine.
- 1:11Speaker 1: Yes, indeed, Well, we are just so excited you've joined us.
- 1:17Speaker 1: We really appreciate it. One of the goals here we
- 1:20Speaker 1: have at Aggressive negotiations. Is just to celebrate Star Wars
- 1:24Speaker 1: and all of its different facets and talk about things
- 1:27Speaker 1: and just have a grand old time and a franchise
- 1:29Speaker 1: that unfortunately sometimes has caused a lot of trepidation with people.
- 1:34Speaker 1: These days, we're not here to yell or complain or
- 1:36Speaker 1: anything like that. We're here just enjoy what we're being
- 1:39Speaker 1: given and talk about it. Yeah, we might be critical
- 1:42Speaker 1: every once in a while, but you know, that's just
- 1:44Speaker 1: part of the game. Find us wherever you get your podcasts,
- 1:47Speaker 1: and if you are on Apple Podcasts or Spotify and
- 1:51Speaker 1: you'd like to do us a great, big old favor,
- 1:53Speaker 1: you know, hit us up with a star rating and review.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Those things actually do make a big difference for other
- 1:59Speaker 1: people being able to find the show. It's like giving
- 2:01Speaker 1: us your stamp of approval, and then other people are like, oh,
- 2:07Speaker 1: so and so liked this show. I think I should listen.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Or maybe you'd like to help us out just by
- 2:12Speaker 1: giving us a quick old shout out to friends. You know,
- 2:16Speaker 1: say you've got some friends who like Star Wars and
- 2:18Speaker 1: they're not listening to us for some reason. Let them know.
- 2:22Speaker 1: Of course, you can find us on social media and
- 2:24Speaker 1: the next Twitter at the Jedi Masters. That's the great
- 2:27Speaker 1: way for you to interact with John and I. And
- 2:31Speaker 1: of course we've got all the other things and you
- 2:32Speaker 1: can find a sundry places. But John wanted to ask
- 2:37Speaker 1: you coming into this. We have both seen I know,
- 2:41Speaker 1: at least season one of Star Wars Visions, and I
- 2:46Speaker 1: think we've both seen season two as well.
- 2:48Speaker 2: Yes, and so.
- 2:51Speaker 1: I wanted to ask you kind of just you know,
- 2:54Speaker 1: we've seen both of those. We've talked about some of
- 2:57Speaker 1: the episodes and the things that stuck out to us,
- 2:59Speaker 1: the things liked and whatnot. When you heard that they
- 3:02Speaker 1: were going to be doing a long form version of
- 3:07Speaker 1: the Ninth Jedi and it be an eight part series,
- 3:11Speaker 1: I mean, were you excited at all that this? Did
- 3:14Speaker 1: this give you any you know, sense of of you know, like,
- 3:18Speaker 1: oh man, I can't wait to see that, or was
- 3:19Speaker 1: it just one of those things, Oh, I guess I'll
- 3:21Speaker 1: get to it when I get to it.
- 3:23Speaker 2: No, I was excited because I first became an anime
- 3:27Speaker 2: fan when I was a very young lad. When I
- 3:30Speaker 2: was growing up, UHF channels would show you know, transor
- 3:34Speaker 2: z Voltron those sorts of things. But around the time
- 3:38Speaker 2: I was ten I first encountered Robotech, which was Harmony
- 3:42Speaker 2: Gold's appropriation of the Macross saga, and then they took
- 3:47Speaker 2: a different show and they turned that into Robotech Masters,
- 3:50Speaker 2: and then they had they had I think it was
- 3:53Speaker 2: called Generator. It was the The third one was I
- 3:56Speaker 2: think it was called Generations or something, but that was
- 3:58Speaker 2: the Envid Invasion series, and it completely changed my life
- 4:03Speaker 2: because I became an anime fan from that point forward.
- 4:07Speaker 2: Not hardcore by any stretch, but a fan. You know
- 4:11Speaker 2: that there's a there's you can be a casual fan,
- 4:14Speaker 2: you can be a fan, and you can be like
- 4:16Speaker 2: a fanatic. I'm not a fanatic, and I've wavered between
- 4:19Speaker 2: casual and fan, you know, through the years and everything.
- 4:24Speaker 2: So it wasn't that they were adapting the Ninth Jedi.
- 4:27Speaker 2: It was that they were going to embrace doing a
- 4:29Speaker 2: whole story where it was like not just a one
- 4:32Speaker 2: episode thing or a brief arc. It was going to
- 4:35Speaker 2: be We're doing a whole series. That excited me because
- 4:39Speaker 2: it brought back memories of my youth. And I said, okay,
- 4:43Speaker 2: I'm on board. I think you had a slightly different
- 4:45Speaker 2: reaction though than I did.
- 4:47Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean I thought that it was an interesting idea,
- 4:51Speaker 1: and you know, watching through you know, the two series again,
- 4:57Speaker 1: there were ones that kind of really jumped out to
- 4:59Speaker 1: me that I really enjoyed. You know, there were some
- 5:01Speaker 1: where I was just kind of left cold, and there
- 5:03Speaker 1: were others I was you know, I would say, slightly
- 5:05Speaker 1: indifferent to uh. And so it wasn't like I there
- 5:10Speaker 1: was no excitement for this, or you know, there was
- 5:13Speaker 1: I didn't care at all. It was just more like, Okay,
- 5:16Speaker 1: I mean, that's that's interesting. I can't say like I'm pumped,
- 5:21Speaker 1: but I will definitely watch it because I will be
- 5:24Speaker 1: interested to see what they're able to do. And I
- 5:26Speaker 1: think one of the things that is most interesting about
- 5:30Speaker 1: this obviously is that you know, Lucas is very inspired
- 5:34Speaker 1: by a lot of things from Japanese culture and tradition.
- 5:39Speaker 1: Of course, Kirasawa also having a huge influence on the
- 5:44Speaker 1: the look and the feel of Star Wars, even some
- 5:47Speaker 1: of the feudalism of Star Wars and the and the
- 5:51Speaker 1: Samurai culture obviously have a huge impact on what the
- 5:55Speaker 1: Jedi look like and even what they wear, and so
- 5:59Speaker 1: to see then a Japanese interpretation of Star Wars through
- 6:05Speaker 1: their lens with a you know, a medium to which
- 6:09Speaker 1: they are not only very familiar with, but you know,
- 6:12Speaker 1: is one of their primary storytelling methods, you know, for
- 6:17Speaker 1: their pop culture. That was interesting to me, you know,
- 6:21Speaker 1: and so and I think that's one of the things
- 6:25Speaker 1: that I'll say just kind of carries me through watching
- 6:29Speaker 1: all eight episodes, is just being interested in how this
- 6:34Speaker 1: culture kind of interprets and then repurposes Star Wars and
- 6:40Speaker 1: its own language and feel and all of that. And
- 6:45Speaker 1: I think that's the other thing after watching the two
- 6:51Speaker 1: seasons of this, you know, it's very clear this is
- 6:55Speaker 1: this is not Star Wars as we know it, right,
- 6:57Speaker 1: This is somebody's interpretation of Star Wars. This is somebody's
- 7:04Speaker 1: vision of Star Wars through a different lens, you know.
- 7:08Speaker 1: And and it's I like to think of it. You know,
- 7:11Speaker 1: they call it Visions, but it's almost like it could
- 7:13Speaker 1: have been called Star Wars variations on a theme.
- 7:16Speaker 2: Yeah. What's interesting to me about it is that, well,
- 7:22Speaker 2: first question, did you like race back and watch the
- 7:24Speaker 2: ninth Jedi episode from Star Wars Visions?
- 7:28Speaker 1: I did not, okay, and I really wish I had.
- 7:31Speaker 2: Well, it's very different from the series that we got,
- 7:35Speaker 2: and it's fascinating, like the character designs are consistent, but
- 7:39Speaker 2: then the execution of the story like that the first
- 7:42Speaker 2: one was very much self contained sort of thing, but
- 7:45Speaker 2: it had elements that were in a sense, there were
- 7:51Speaker 2: elements where I saw where they ran with it and
- 7:53Speaker 2: where they developed it. But there was there was this
- 7:58Speaker 2: decision here with this series that you know, I like
- 8:02Speaker 2: you say variations because this is a weird mind experiment
- 8:09Speaker 2: in the sense that this is Star Wars as if
- 8:14Speaker 2: an anime studio thought of it first. I understand what
- 8:19Speaker 2: you're saying. Yet I don't see this being like, oh,
- 8:24Speaker 2: this is an anime spin on Star Wars so much
- 8:28Speaker 2: as this is recreating history and saying, hey, we're going
- 8:31Speaker 2: to make anime that happens to look like Star Wars.
- 8:35Speaker 2: Like I know, I'm probably not explaining it very well,
- 8:38Speaker 2: but like they use the terms Sith and Jedi, Kyber Crystal,
- 8:44Speaker 2: all of these sorts of things, and it's just one
- 8:47Speaker 2: of those things where it's like, but it it's just
- 8:50Speaker 2: not the same, like it's a multiverse Star Wars. I
- 8:53Speaker 2: guess you could.
- 8:54Speaker 1: Say, yeah, yeah, you know, we were talking about this
- 8:58Speaker 1: behind the scenes with a good friend of ours, and
- 9:02Speaker 1: you know, one of the things that I mentioned about
- 9:06Speaker 1: this is that in many ways it almost feels like
- 9:09Speaker 1: this is Star Wars that's more based off of George
- 9:13Speaker 1: lucas original script, where he hadn't quite nailed down every aspect,
- 9:18Speaker 1: you know, and there's a lot of things that you know,
- 9:22Speaker 1: were more important in those scripts that became way less
- 9:26Speaker 1: important or not important at all, or it got completely
- 9:29Speaker 1: changed or shifted, you know. I mean, I think even
- 9:32Speaker 1: the idea of the Kyber crystals being so important in
- 9:35Speaker 1: the way that they are kind of here, and you know,
- 9:40Speaker 1: I think then like you made the wonderful joke of
- 9:45Speaker 1: the lightsaber mood rings, you know, that kind of thing
- 9:49Speaker 1: really reflecting those feelings within like all of that just
- 9:56Speaker 1: and even two it the nature of the Jedi you
- 10:02Speaker 1: know here is different and is not quite the same
- 10:06Speaker 1: as what we know it from, So all of that
- 10:10Speaker 1: kind of felt like somebody had taken that and did
- 10:12Speaker 1: a variation off of that instead of you know, all
- 10:17Speaker 1: the Star Wars as we know it. And then it
- 10:20Speaker 1: almost felt like to me too, I mean, because there's
- 10:24Speaker 1: a lot of ideas in here that feel akin to
- 10:28Speaker 1: but not completely true to the sequel trilogy, and so
- 10:33Speaker 1: it's like those two things almost had a baby, and
- 10:35Speaker 1: then somebody was like, I'm gonna take that and then
- 10:38Speaker 1: do my own version of that, And yeah, it's a
- 10:42Speaker 1: very It's not like this is an awful way to
- 10:46Speaker 1: phrase it, but it's like a Frankenstein version of that,
- 10:49Speaker 1: where they've taken bits and pieces of all this stuff
- 10:51Speaker 1: and put it together. And that's not I don't mean
- 10:53Speaker 1: that derogatorily whatsoever. I don't want anybody to hear me,
- 10:57Speaker 1: you know that. I'm not even giving away how I
- 10:59Speaker 1: feel about that series. That's just kind of all the
- 11:02Speaker 1: pieces that kind of came together to make what we
- 11:05Speaker 1: got here.
- 11:06Speaker 2: It's a stew baby, you got a.
- 11:08Speaker 1: Stupid yeah kind of stew going here. You go.
- 11:10Speaker 2: Yeah, ah, man, I think that. Yeah, I think I
- 11:15Speaker 2: gotta say one thing, which is the one consistency that
- 11:20Speaker 2: still you know me, was I was like, oh, we
- 11:23Speaker 2: got another Death Star style weapon. Like I'm just I'm dying,
- 11:29Speaker 2: you know. I'll tell you what. For any of the
- 11:31Speaker 2: detractors out there that didn't love Solo as much as
- 11:35Speaker 2: we did, or didn't love the Mandalorian and crok It
- 11:37Speaker 2: as much as we did, there wasn't a single freaking
- 11:39Speaker 2: dust star thing anywhere within a hundred parsex of.
- 11:42Speaker 1: Those marriage true, and that very true.
- 11:44Speaker 2: It's an extra star in my book, no matter what
- 11:47Speaker 2: you hear me. Yeah, I'm tired of that. I never
- 11:49Speaker 2: thought i'd say this if I went back in time
- 11:52Speaker 2: and I said to my you know three, my six
- 11:55Speaker 2: year old, my eight year old' selve and I said, hey,
- 11:57Speaker 2: you know, there's going to come a time or you
- 11:59Speaker 2: can roll your eyes whenever you see death Star on
- 12:00Speaker 2: the screen. I'd be like, get get the f out
- 12:02Speaker 2: of here, what are you talking about. I'd be like, oh, no,
- 12:05Speaker 2: young man, don't worry. There's gonna come a time where
- 12:08Speaker 2: you're tired of the death Star concept. It's coming. It's coming.
- 12:11Speaker 2: It's gonna be there. You give a couple of decades,
- 12:13Speaker 2: you'll get there. And I hate to say that, because
- 12:19Speaker 2: what this did was that Star Killer Base death Star concept.
- 12:24Speaker 2: I was like, oh, well, if they'd actually had this,
- 12:27Speaker 2: I've been like, I've been more okay with the sequel,
- 12:29Speaker 2: like to your point about like they mashed together a
- 12:31Speaker 2: bunch of stuff at.
- 12:32Speaker 1: Least made sense, right like this with the.
- 12:36Speaker 2: Kayper Crystal, Okay, let's not do that thing. Sure, but
- 12:41Speaker 2: I think that the the one punch I'm really glad
- 12:46Speaker 2: that they pulled, because, like you said, it's like the
- 12:48Speaker 2: early concept of Jedi and Sith and stuff like that
- 12:51Speaker 2: Lucas hadn't quite ironed out in the earliest drafts. And
- 12:56Speaker 2: I think that the one punch I'm glad they pulled
- 13:00Speaker 2: was at the end, after our protagonists and antagonists both
- 13:05Speaker 2: have the silver blaze, which means they're the whatever it symbolized.
- 13:10Speaker 2: At the very least, they pulled the punch and it
- 13:13Speaker 2: was like, oh no, very clearly, if you have good
- 13:17Speaker 2: intention and your you know, your noble of heart, all
- 13:21Speaker 2: that stuff, that's a good thing. That's what the Jedi are.
- 13:25Speaker 2: There's no there's no ambivalence about that. And then if
- 13:28Speaker 2: you have hate in your heart, there is no like
- 13:31Speaker 2: there's a repudiation of a concept that I eted in
- 13:37Speaker 2: certain Star Wars works about this idea of oh, you
- 13:40Speaker 2: have to embrace both the light and the dark, and
- 13:43Speaker 2: I'm like, yeah, yeah, no, you don't, No, you don't.
- 13:46Speaker 2: At the very least, they pulled that punch at the
- 13:48Speaker 2: end where you relieved, like I was, when it got
- 13:50Speaker 2: to that moment, you're like, okay, good at least we
- 13:52Speaker 2: stayed within.
- 13:52Speaker 1: Those lines absolutely, And I think one of the most
- 13:55Speaker 1: interesting parts of that is the idea of in our
- 14:00Speaker 1: main villain. And this was such an interesting idea, I thought,
- 14:06Speaker 1: and I liked the way they played with it the
- 14:08Speaker 1: whole time until you get to the very very end, right,
- 14:11Speaker 1: But now whole goal is to be able to do so,
- 14:18Speaker 1: to do everything emotionlessly, to purge oneself basically of all emotion,
- 14:24Speaker 1: like a sith Vulcan, you know, and that makes everything okay, right,
- 14:30Speaker 1: at least in his mind, and therefore he can use
- 14:33Speaker 1: cruelty and power and crush anybody who gets in his
- 14:37Speaker 1: way for the purpose of trying to create, you know,
- 14:43Speaker 1: order in the galaxy. And I thought that that was
- 14:47Speaker 1: an interesting idea of, you know that, instead of embracing
- 14:52Speaker 1: controlled emotion like the Jedi, or embracing fullaw on emotion
- 14:57Speaker 1: and utilizing it like the scyth, to say this idea
- 15:02Speaker 1: of and play with the idea of, you know what,
- 15:05Speaker 1: I'm going to have zero emotion about anything, you know.
- 15:09Speaker 1: And and in that sense, what's so fascinating is like,
- 15:13Speaker 1: you know, the difference between love and hate isn't really
- 15:18Speaker 1: all that different, you know, it's two very strong emotions.
- 15:23Speaker 1: But apathy is like maybe the worst form of hate,
- 15:27Speaker 1: where it's like I couldn't care enough to be moved emotionally.
- 15:32Speaker 1: And that's where you know, nahwom kind of is And
- 15:36Speaker 1: like you said, by the end, we embrace the idea,
- 15:40Speaker 1: know that there is a there's a dark and a light,
- 15:42Speaker 1: that there is a selfless and a selfish and that
- 15:45Speaker 1: is very much the end of where you know, Lucas's
- 15:50Speaker 1: entire thought process for Star Wars is that one is
- 15:54Speaker 1: better than the other.
- 15:56Speaker 2: Let me ask you this question. They very much set
- 15:59Speaker 2: it in the future of the Star Wars, in this
- 16:02Speaker 2: alternate Star Wars galaxy. Do you think it would have
- 16:04Speaker 2: been better if they'd approach this from the past, where
- 16:07Speaker 2: you would have had that sort of idea that we
- 16:11Speaker 2: thought that Jeames, me and Gold was going to be pursuing,
- 16:14Speaker 2: like this is how the Jedi found out what they
- 16:16Speaker 2: really stood for sort of thing. Do you think that
- 16:18Speaker 2: would have been a stronger story choice for them.
- 16:21Speaker 1: I like that idea. I think that would have been
- 16:23Speaker 1: really interesting as if you know, because then by doing that,
- 16:28Speaker 1: you're not thinking about the questions of whether or not
- 16:33Speaker 1: this fits you know, because it could easily fit if
- 16:36Speaker 1: you set this, you know, ten thousand years in the
- 16:40Speaker 1: past or whatever you need to. And I also think
- 16:44Speaker 1: that that makes, you know, just all the ship designs
- 16:48Speaker 1: feel really really interesting then too for this, and it
- 16:52Speaker 1: makes it seem like that that fits within this universe
- 16:57Speaker 1: even more so. And so yeah, I mean, I think
- 17:00Speaker 1: that's the most interesting part of this. And the place
- 17:05Speaker 1: I was most surprised about by it all was just
- 17:09Speaker 1: how well it kept my attention and how interesting I
- 17:12Speaker 1: thought it was, and how I was able to allow
- 17:16Speaker 1: the story to do its thing without feeling like, you know,
- 17:20Speaker 1: it has to be quote unquote close to Canaan or whatever.
- 17:23Speaker 1: You know, this truly is meant to be an exploration
- 17:25Speaker 1: of somebody else's thought process about Star Wars, and what
- 17:29Speaker 1: I found was that it was interesting enough to really
- 17:33Speaker 1: keep my attention.
- 17:35Speaker 2: Question for you, I do have two particular points of
- 17:42Speaker 2: criticism about the show. I want you to choose which
- 17:45Speaker 2: one I bring up first. The first one has to
- 17:49Speaker 2: do with the animation from a technical level, and the
- 17:54Speaker 2: other one has to do with a specific storytelling choice
- 17:57Speaker 2: that they made that irked me.
- 17:59Speaker 1: Ghost story telling. First, I'm really exciting.
- 18:01Speaker 2: Storytelling choice that irked me. At the end of the
- 18:04Speaker 2: fourth episode, there's a break in the story. Open to
- 18:08Speaker 2: the fifth episode, they start with narration to say, oh,
- 18:12Speaker 2: time has passed and blah blah blah blah blah. And
- 18:16Speaker 2: I thought that was something of a cheat because they
- 18:20Speaker 2: got to a certain point and I was really into it,
- 18:23Speaker 2: and I think that moment when they made that choice,
- 18:28Speaker 2: I had to expend a little bit of energy to
- 18:32Speaker 2: warm back up to them because I didn't I didn't
- 18:36Speaker 2: like the fact that they did some hand waving between
- 18:39Speaker 2: episode four and episode five where it's like, oh my gosh,
- 18:43Speaker 2: look at this horrible thing that happened. Question mark, question mark,
- 18:45Speaker 2: question mark, and we're just not going to bother about
- 18:47Speaker 2: telling you how we got here. Here they are now.
- 18:52Speaker 2: So did that irk you the way it irked me?
- 18:54Speaker 1: I I'm glad you brought that up, because yes, it
- 18:58Speaker 1: was one of those things where it just didn't make sense.
- 19:03Speaker 1: And you know, there's little bits and pieces in the
- 19:09Speaker 1: episode that kind of give you that you know, Kara
- 19:11Speaker 1: was able to escape, you know, on some sort of
- 19:14Speaker 1: ship and land on this planet or whatever, and she's
- 19:17Speaker 1: been there kind of recovering from what happened for a
- 19:21Speaker 1: while with these indigenous characters that live there, kind of
- 19:26Speaker 1: akin to I don't know, platypus e walks, and.
- 19:31Speaker 2: So we'll have to come up with a name for them. Yeah.
- 19:37Speaker 1: Yeah, I think it's just plea walk, you know, because I.
- 19:41Speaker 2: Like plea walk, all right walk?
- 19:44Speaker 1: So and yeah, I mean you're absolutely right in the
- 19:48Speaker 1: sense that the story I think could have easily done
- 19:53Speaker 1: almost like thirty seconds of quick cutting to give you
- 20:01Speaker 1: the story of what happened, you know, like her escaping
- 20:03Speaker 1: and landing on this planet and you know, meeting the
- 20:07Speaker 1: first plea walk and then you know, you get the
- 20:10Speaker 1: then the I don't know, ripple of the screen or
- 20:15Speaker 1: whatever for time having passed and you're like three months
- 20:18Speaker 1: later or whatever you want to do.
- 20:20Speaker 2: Yeah, it just seemed odd because it suddenly makes the
- 20:23Speaker 2: first four episodes seem like season one, and then like
- 20:28Speaker 2: like for some reason, I would have been okay if
- 20:30Speaker 2: there'd been six months between episode four and episode five,
- 20:34Speaker 2: I'd been like okay, Like I would have had the
- 20:36Speaker 2: time pass in my brain and probably been more forgiving.
- 20:39Speaker 2: And it's the weirdest thing because it's still magical handwaving.
- 20:43Speaker 2: It's because it happened in such quick succession, is why
- 20:46Speaker 2: why it hurts me anyway?
- 20:49Speaker 1: Great? No, it's a really I remember thinking like, why
- 20:54Speaker 1: is this episode starting like this?
- 20:55Speaker 2: And what? Oh?
- 20:57Speaker 1: That's what?
- 20:59Speaker 2: Right?
- 20:59Speaker 1: Where is she? How did you survive? What?
- 21:01Speaker 2: I'm so glad I'm not alone in that.
- 21:04Speaker 1: No, not at all.
- 21:05Speaker 2: Okay, So, okay, the design thing or the animation thing,
- 21:12Speaker 2: there were a couple of things I would I would
- 21:15Speaker 2: critique about it in specific, but one that always jumped
- 21:20Speaker 2: out at me was the decision to make the ships
- 21:25Speaker 2: like this nineteen ninety eight video game CG style took
- 21:31Speaker 2: me out of it. Man, I had trouble with it
- 21:35Speaker 2: because you have this beautiful hand drawn style for everything.
- 21:40Speaker 2: I'm sure they're using computers now or whatever. That's not
- 21:43Speaker 2: the point. Yeah, But then you contrast it with the
- 21:46Speaker 2: ship style and it's like these look like elements from
- 21:49Speaker 2: two separate things that don't mesh. Yes, and that bothered
- 21:54Speaker 2: me too.
- 21:55Speaker 1: No, I agree, And you know, I think that they
- 21:58Speaker 1: do that in a lot of anime these days, where
- 22:01Speaker 1: they create these type of vehicles and stuff with the
- 22:05Speaker 1: three D animation that kind of looks like it's a
- 22:09Speaker 1: part of the two D but not truly. So it
- 22:12Speaker 1: just doesn't quite seem to fit. Yeah, they also kind
- 22:16Speaker 1: of do that sometimes in the you know, when they
- 22:18Speaker 1: did that in the DC Animated movies as well. But yeah,
- 22:21Speaker 1: you know, so they would do that, and so I
- 22:24Speaker 1: think it's a part of just this type of animation
- 22:27Speaker 1: style overall, and it is a little bit strange to me.
- 22:33Speaker 1: I completely agree. So what did you think? Okay, So
- 22:38Speaker 1: it was really interesting the way in which this kind
- 22:42Speaker 1: of plays with the idea of the Jedi, you know,
- 22:44Speaker 1: and you have this character and Zeema Urgima, who you know,
- 22:54Speaker 1: feels the desire and the need to attack his master
- 22:58Speaker 1: who he is seen being corrupted, right, and that leads
- 23:08Speaker 1: a young Padawan na Wam to see that and think
- 23:12Speaker 1: that that is the way to accomplish things, and therefore
- 23:15Speaker 1: that's what leads him down that path, right of And
- 23:21Speaker 1: Gimma is the first one who is able to you know,
- 23:26Speaker 1: have his lightsaber turn silver, which represents that idea of
- 23:31Speaker 1: like emotional detachment completely to the point of almost you know, emotionlessness.
- 23:39Speaker 1: And I just wondered, how do you vibe with that, Like,
- 23:44Speaker 1: what did you think about that whole idea of to
- 23:48Speaker 1: kind of approach the Jedi question? This way.
- 23:54Speaker 2: I thought it was intellectually interesting but dissatisfying from a
- 24:00Speaker 2: storytelling perspective. I think that they fell in love with
- 24:08Speaker 2: the silver lightsaber concept, which is fine, which is nice
- 24:12Speaker 2: they did, but it was used in such a way
- 24:18Speaker 2: that its impact wasn't effectively felt. Does that make sense?
- 24:24Speaker 2: Where it just they went to that well and it
- 24:29Speaker 2: but then after a certain point it was no longer unique,
- 24:33Speaker 2: and therefore it wasn't impactful and it wore off its
- 24:38Speaker 2: significance by the end of the series. That's where I
- 24:41Speaker 2: stand with it.
- 24:42Speaker 1: What about you, Yeah, I think it was interesting, and
- 24:45Speaker 1: like you said, I think philosophically it is a great
- 24:49Speaker 1: idea to explore. I also kind of am with you
- 24:54Speaker 1: in this sense of thinking that the execution isn't as
- 24:59Speaker 1: good as I want wanted it to be, you know.
- 25:01Speaker 1: And I think in some ways I would say that
- 25:04Speaker 1: it needed more focus on the actual story elements about
- 25:10Speaker 1: the Jedi and their view of the force and those
- 25:12Speaker 1: kind of thing. They think it needed more depth there
- 25:15Speaker 1: for it to really come to life. Yeah, in a
- 25:18Speaker 1: way that had more resonance than in the story, so
- 25:22Speaker 1: that that moment at the end of the series, where
- 25:26Speaker 1: that moment where you know, Kara and our care are Kara, Kara,
- 25:34Speaker 1: Car and Nawamar fighting right? That you really did feel
- 25:38Speaker 1: that more succinctly, Uh, that change and that shift you
- 25:45Speaker 1: know that Yes, she's right that No, your actions actually
- 25:52Speaker 1: are the only thing that matter here. It is not
- 25:57Speaker 1: whether or not you feel emotionless about them, that you
- 26:01Speaker 1: feel nothing about them, that has nothing to do with
- 26:04Speaker 1: the you know this.
- 26:05Speaker 2: And so I.
- 26:08Speaker 1: Just wish there had been more on that, because I think,
- 26:10Speaker 1: like you said, man, that is actually a fascinating discussion
- 26:15Speaker 1: to have, and I think it would have been more
- 26:18Speaker 1: fun to dive a little bit more into that than
- 26:21Speaker 1: some of the other areas that we did.
- 26:23Speaker 2: Okay, So question, because this thought has been running around
- 26:28Speaker 2: in my brain for a minute, would it have been
- 26:31Speaker 2: better to release this as a standalone streaming movie event
- 26:38Speaker 2: had about two maybe two and a half hours instead
- 26:41Speaker 2: of eight half hour episodes.
- 26:44Speaker 1: I think I actually liked it in the episodes, And
- 26:46Speaker 1: maybe that's because it just made it digestible, you know,
- 26:49Speaker 1: for me, I was able to watch, you know, a
- 26:52Speaker 1: few episodes at a time and instead of just kind
- 26:55Speaker 1: of having to pause right in the middle of the movie.
- 26:59Speaker 1: And and I think that because where I'm coming down
- 27:03Speaker 1: to with your question is that I think that there
- 27:06Speaker 1: are some places where the editing between episodes, as we
- 27:09Speaker 1: already talked about, just needed to be better, and if
- 27:12Speaker 1: that had happened, I think it would have been even stronger.
- 27:16Speaker 1: And therefore I can see the desire to have this
- 27:20Speaker 1: kind of re edited into a tire film that where
- 27:24Speaker 1: you would hopefully have a much more consistent flow.
- 27:30Speaker 2: Overall, I'm satisfied with the series. I don't regret watching it.
- 27:35Speaker 2: The ultimate question for me comes down to would I
- 27:39Speaker 2: watch it again? Like I can promise you and I'm
- 27:43Speaker 2: not doing the comparison I'm not falling down the comparison
- 27:45Speaker 2: game rabbit hole here. I know There's going to be
- 27:48Speaker 2: another point in my life where I'm going to rewatch Rebels.
- 27:50Speaker 2: I'm going to rewatch Clone Wars as sure as hell.
- 27:54Speaker 2: I'm going to be rewatching mal shadow Lord before the
- 27:56Speaker 2: end of the year. Bad Batch. I mean, come on,
- 27:59Speaker 2: that's like there's so much any great choices. There are
- 28:03Speaker 2: truly magnificent choices. But I am going to rewatch mall
- 28:06Speaker 2: shadow Lord during spooky season because it belongs there.
- 28:11Speaker 1: Do the tracks?
- 28:13Speaker 2: Is this a rewatchable series for you is this which
- 28:15Speaker 2: doesn't mean it's bad. If the answer is no, I'm
- 28:18Speaker 2: saying like, is this a series where you're gonna come
- 28:20Speaker 2: back to it? Or is this a Hey, that was cool,
- 28:23Speaker 2: good experience. Maybe in a few years I might wander
- 28:27Speaker 2: back because I might have forgotten a few points.
- 28:29Speaker 1: I could see there being a point where I come
- 28:31Speaker 1: back to this somewhere down the road, but I don't
- 28:36Speaker 1: think it's gonna be anytime soon. And like you, I'm
- 28:41Speaker 1: glad I watched this. I think it was interesting. I
- 28:44Speaker 1: enjoyed it in that sense. I didn't regret watching it.
- 28:48Speaker 1: You know, there were some parts of the these series
- 28:51Speaker 1: that I felt like I really connected with and were
- 28:54Speaker 1: really interesting, and then there are others where I didn't.
- 28:56Speaker 1: But on a whole no, the answer there's no. This
- 29:01Speaker 1: isn't a rewatchable series in that sense. What about you?
- 29:05Speaker 2: Yeah, I am. A few years from now, maybe I'll
- 29:08Speaker 2: come back, But this isn't something that that electrified me.
- 29:14Speaker 2: It's good, it's well made, it's interesting, but this is
- 29:20Speaker 2: not something where I'm so electrified by it. I'm like,
- 29:24Speaker 2: I can't wait to rewatch this again. I can't wait
- 29:27Speaker 2: to jump back in. Like the only reason I haven't
- 29:30Speaker 2: started a bad batch rewatch recently is because I know
- 29:33Speaker 2: that once I, once you start down the batch path,
- 29:36Speaker 2: forever will dominate your destiny, consume you. It will like
- 29:40Speaker 2: I'm not coming out of that for until all the
- 29:43Speaker 2: seasons are done. But yeah, this this is one where
- 29:49Speaker 2: it's like, oh, that was cool, and I'm you know,
- 29:51Speaker 2: I even I like some of the stuff that's going
- 29:54Speaker 2: on here, but I'm not I'm just not electric. And
- 29:57Speaker 2: so maybe in a few years I'll come back to it.
- 30:00Speaker 2: But this isn't a light me on fire thing. But
- 30:03Speaker 2: the thing is what I love, what I've really thought
- 30:05Speaker 2: about at the end of it, was here we are.
- 30:09Speaker 2: In a very short span of time, we got Mall
- 30:12Speaker 2: shadow Lord, the Mandalorian and Grogu and Star Wars visions,
- 30:16Speaker 2: and your mileage may vary with these things, but none
- 30:20Speaker 2: of them were bad. Mall shadow Lord was transcendent. Mandalorian
- 30:25Speaker 2: and Grogu was really good and entertaining. And this was
- 30:29Speaker 2: good and entertaining. And I think that sometimes people really
- 30:35Speaker 2: need to roll back their whole thing about you know,
- 30:39Speaker 2: Star Wars is dead or stuff like that. No, Star
- 30:42Speaker 2: Wars is very much alive, and they're doing some really
- 30:47Speaker 2: different things, and I'm glad that they're trying all of
- 30:50Speaker 2: these different things and just saying what about this, what
- 30:54Speaker 2: about this? What about this, and trying them and putting
- 30:57Speaker 2: the time and the effort into them to give people
- 31:01Speaker 2: an opportunity to see different takes, to see different stuff,
- 31:05Speaker 2: and then they can collect that data and say, well,
- 31:07Speaker 2: this is what the audience wants or doesn't want. And
- 31:11Speaker 2: I honestly think that the way that they're going about
- 31:14Speaker 2: it right now is super smart because they're giving us
- 31:17Speaker 2: a lot of choices, and I can I can look
- 31:22Speaker 2: at the things that they're releasing now based on just
- 31:25Speaker 2: these three things, and I can say, Okay, well, I
- 31:27Speaker 2: know what's creative crews I'm responding best to. But I
- 31:31Speaker 2: didn't dislike any of this. There wasn't anything I came
- 31:34Speaker 2: out of where I was like, this sucks. There are
- 31:37Speaker 2: other franchises where shows come out and I'm like, oh, yeah,
- 31:41Speaker 2: one episode, I'm good and I'm walking away. Like I
- 31:44Speaker 2: didn't walk away from Star Wars Visions Presents the Ninth Jedi.
- 31:47Speaker 2: I didn't like watch one episode. Maybe like Matt, we're
- 31:49Speaker 2: not we can't now, we're not talking about this. I can't.
- 31:51Speaker 2: I can't handle this. I really love man alert. You know,
- 31:54Speaker 2: Like I know I'm be laboring the point at this point,
- 31:56Speaker 2: but you get what I'm saying where it's like we
- 31:59Speaker 2: got an embarrassed in riches right here, Guys, like we
- 32:02Speaker 2: got we've got three good things in a row. You know,
- 32:06Speaker 2: remove the which you liked more or less sort of thing,
- 32:09Speaker 2: but like there's three good things in a row. Let's
- 32:11Speaker 2: be grateful.
- 32:12Speaker 1: It does leave me excited for what's next, you know,
- 32:15Speaker 1: and like you said, you know, having three things that
- 32:20Speaker 1: on a on a spectrum of liking, you know, each
- 32:24Speaker 1: one of these hit a different part of that spectrum,
- 32:27Speaker 1: and that does make me excited then that you know,
- 32:30Speaker 1: the next year, we've got Starfighter coming out, and then
- 32:33Speaker 1: we've got Ahsoka coming out, and I can't wait to
- 32:36Speaker 1: see both of those and you know what they're like,
- 32:40Speaker 1: I think it'll be great, and so, you know, all
- 32:43Speaker 1: in all, it also leaves me excited to see, you know,
- 32:46Speaker 1: what are they going to do next with Star Wars?
- 32:49Speaker 1: Where are they going to go next? You know, I
- 32:50Speaker 1: know D twenty three is happening right now. I don't
- 32:53Speaker 1: know if we'll actually get you know, any big announcements
- 32:56Speaker 1: on Star Wars. I don't know if they may be
- 32:58Speaker 1: waiting for celebration next year before they really truly make
- 33:02Speaker 1: any big announcements about what's coming, but I'd be interested
- 33:06Speaker 1: to see if we do get maybe a few teases,
- 33:09Speaker 1: because we also know that Mall season two is coming
- 33:13Speaker 1: at some point as well. You know, we've already got
- 33:15Speaker 1: that is so I mean, yeah, I think, you know,
- 33:20Speaker 1: the death of Star Wars has been greatly exaggerated, and
- 33:24Speaker 1: I think that you know something I think you know,
- 33:29Speaker 1: possibly in the future we're going to talk about. So
- 33:30Speaker 1: we don't need to belabor the point here in this
- 33:34Speaker 1: episode because it's not what it's about. But you know,
- 33:37Speaker 1: there's been such a divide that's happened in all of fandoms,
- 33:41Speaker 1: which is like things either are the suck or they're
- 33:44Speaker 1: the best, you know, and so much of that just
- 33:47Speaker 1: kind of kills fandom in general because that's never been
- 33:50Speaker 1: what fandom is, so all in all, John on the
- 33:54Speaker 1: vaunted Letterbox ratings scale of five stars, what we did
- 34:00Speaker 1: you give? Star Wars Visions presents the ninth Jedi.
- 34:06Speaker 2: Well on the vaunted five star scale, which will never
- 34:08Speaker 2: ever be changed under any circumstances. It's not like that
- 34:11Speaker 2: old four star scale that I grew up with. Bah,
- 34:13Speaker 2: what were we even doing there? You need?
- 34:16Speaker 1: Can you even understand that scale? Can?
- 34:18Speaker 2: It doesn't even translate. I don't even know what's going on.
- 34:21Speaker 2: And with half stars, my gosh, it's like a ten
- 34:23Speaker 2: point scale. Why not just give quarter stars too? Who knows?
- 34:26Speaker 2: But I play the half star game and I'm going
- 34:28Speaker 2: to play it here where I'm going, I'm going to
- 34:31Speaker 2: say that I'm giving this a three and a half. Overall,
- 34:38Speaker 2: it's a three, So why would I give it that
- 34:41Speaker 2: extra half? I give it the extra half because it
- 34:45Speaker 2: is different, It's it's something, it's it's however you want.
- 34:51Speaker 1: To say it.
- 34:53Speaker 2: It's somebody coming up and trying something different and doing
- 34:58Speaker 2: it well and admitting to their concept, and so I
- 35:02Speaker 2: got to give some extra credit on that. So I'm
- 35:04Speaker 2: coming in at a three and a half out of five.
- 35:07Speaker 2: Some people might think it's generous, some people might think
- 35:10Speaker 2: it's harsh, But that's how I'm threading the stone needle.
- 35:14Speaker 2: That's three and a half for me. What about you.
- 35:16Speaker 1: Man coming in hot with three and a half as well?
- 35:19Speaker 1: You know I thought that all the same things that
- 35:22Speaker 1: you mentioned, And I think that the biggest part of
- 35:26Speaker 1: this was that it kept my attention the whole time.
- 35:30Speaker 1: You know, there weren't any of the episodes where I'm thinking, oh,
- 35:32Speaker 1: this is boring, this is dumb, you know, and I
- 35:35Speaker 1: think a big part of that was approaching this on
- 35:39Speaker 1: its own terms, right. It is not trying to be
- 35:42Speaker 1: Lucasian Star Wars. It is a variation on a theme
- 35:46Speaker 1: and kind of seeing where they it felt like they
- 35:50Speaker 1: had pulled some of their inspiration, which is you know,
- 35:54Speaker 1: they did that comic book series, the Star Wars, which
- 35:57Speaker 1: is based off of Lucas's original shit, I love it.
- 36:00Speaker 2: JW. Wrinsler did that series and it's freaking amazing.
- 36:05Speaker 1: This just feels like it fits within that type of universe,
- 36:08Speaker 1: right and so and of course you know comics also
- 36:11Speaker 1: did you know their Elseworld version of Star Wars as well,
- 36:16Speaker 1: where they just mixed up you know, elements and created
- 36:19Speaker 1: news stories. And yeah, I don't have a problem with
- 36:24Speaker 1: this type of experiment. And again allowing a culture that
- 36:30Speaker 1: so influenced Star Wars to be able to play with
- 36:33Speaker 1: Star Wars itself like this, you know, I find it
- 36:35Speaker 1: interesting And again, sometimes your vibe. Your mileage may very
- 36:41Speaker 1: much vary on the different episodes, right, but this one
- 36:46Speaker 1: was just something that I was like, Man, this is cool.
- 36:50Speaker 1: I'm digging it. Is it perfect? No? Do I have
- 36:53Speaker 1: some complaints about it? Yes, I'm glad I watched it,
- 36:56Speaker 1: and I hope other Star Wars fans will watch it
- 36:58Speaker 1: as well. Absolutely so.
- 37:00Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah. At the very least, I'm hoping that it
- 37:03Speaker 2: has what I would call the Robotech effect like Robotech
- 37:06Speaker 2: had with me, where some fans will see this and
- 37:09Speaker 2: they'll be like, you know that anime stuff is pretty
- 37:12Speaker 2: interesting and they go exploring it. Now, there are some
- 37:15Speaker 2: dark corners over there, folks, so tread tread carefully, but
- 37:19Speaker 2: there's some really good stuff with it. Yeah yeah, wealth
- 37:25Speaker 2: just stick with anime. Stick with anime. You're all right,
- 37:28Speaker 2: You're all right. But yeah yeah yeah. So hopefully this does,
- 37:32Speaker 2: at the very least stir serve as a window to
- 37:36Speaker 2: uh a new art form for some Star Wars fans,
- 37:40Speaker 2: and maybe even spur them on to explore some of
- 37:42Speaker 2: the stuff that Lucas himself was talking about that inspired him.
- 37:46Speaker 2: Like you said, so that'd be that would be really good.
- 37:49Speaker 2: But speaking of inspiring people, where you're online that inspires me.
- 37:55Speaker 2: I see you posting online and I go, you know what,
- 37:59Speaker 2: I want to act with that guy. So where can
- 38:01Speaker 2: people find you online?
- 38:03Speaker 1: Well, I do work to inspire. You can follow me
- 38:06Speaker 1: over on ex Twitter and all of social media. If
- 38:09Speaker 1: I'm on the platform, my name is Matt Rushing zero two,
- 38:12Speaker 1: So look for that name, and I'd love to interact
- 38:15Speaker 1: with you and talk with you, especially if you've got
- 38:17Speaker 1: some thoughts you have about the Ninth Jedi. I'm looking
- 38:22Speaker 1: forward to understanding who the Tenth Jedi is. Anyway, you
- 38:25Speaker 1: can also find me on the network here. I've got
- 38:28Speaker 1: a complete show called Outposts. Every single chapter the Harry
- 38:31Speaker 1: Potter series was talked about. Hope you'll enjoy that. Plus
- 38:35Speaker 1: over on the TFM network, we got a bunch of
- 38:37Speaker 1: shows that I'm doing. One is The six pot two
- 38:39Speaker 1: Club and just enjoy talking about all of the fandoms
- 38:43Speaker 1: we love. Plus a lot of great star trek talk
- 38:46Speaker 1: with my good friend Chris Jones. But John, you know,
- 38:48Speaker 1: if people wanted to see what you've got going on,
- 38:51Speaker 1: or maybe I don't know, I think there's a there's
- 38:53Speaker 1: a show that you dominate on where you're really educating
- 38:59Speaker 1: some others, you know, who are really just lax in
- 39:02Speaker 1: their film knowledge, and it's kind of embarrassing sometimes. Anyway,
- 39:06Speaker 1: where could people find you?
- 39:07Speaker 2: Well, you know, I think I should start with that.
- 39:09Speaker 2: Here on the network, I co host a show, as
- 39:11Speaker 2: you rightly point out, called house Lights, where I generously
- 39:14Speaker 2: donate my time as sort of a pro bono thing,
- 39:16Speaker 2: you know, like a lawyer who's helping out people who
- 39:18Speaker 2: can't afford any better. Where I educate Darren Moser and
- 39:21Speaker 2: Tristan Radel about film, film history, film criticism, all those
- 39:25Speaker 2: sorts of things. Go on and check it out. They're
- 39:27Speaker 2: eager learners, and maybe someday they'll, you know, they'll rise
- 39:31Speaker 2: to my level. We'll see.
- 39:33Speaker 1: And of course it takes a lot to become a
- 39:34Speaker 1: knight or a master.
- 39:36Speaker 2: We both know you gotta work, you gotta put in
- 39:38Speaker 2: the effort, and they've been going at it for years,
- 39:40Speaker 2: so you know, we'll figure it out. But you can
- 39:42Speaker 2: find me online. It's Castle Junkie on your social network
- 39:45Speaker 2: of choice. I prefer to be on good Reads and
- 39:48Speaker 2: Letterbox because you can only talk about books and movies there.
- 39:51Speaker 2: So Master Rushing, I do have to go and prepare
- 39:54Speaker 2: my social media accounts for the undoubted influx of people
- 39:59Speaker 2: who are now going to be mess me. So I
- 40:01Speaker 2: think it's time to close these negotiations.
- 40:04Speaker 1: John, negotiations are closed. Join the Revolution, Join the Nerd Party.
