- 0:39Speaker 3: I'm Deel Cooper. Thanks so much for tuning in on
- 0:41Speaker 3: this Wednesday morning. It is Wednesday morning. It is beautiful
- 0:44Speaker 3: and bright and sunny, and it is even going to
- 0:46Speaker 3: be warm outside. And I'd like to welcome into the
- 0:48Speaker 3: studio this morning to share in the sunlight. Today is
- 0:51Speaker 3: Larry Dawson is heapos Cars and Larry Dawson is here
- 0:54Speaker 3: with this morning. Hey Larry, how you doing this morning?
- 0:55Speaker 4: Good morning, and you're right, this is except nice weather
- 1:02Speaker 4: when you like to bottle it up and carry it
- 1:05Speaker 4: about eleven months, maybe have one month that's not so good.
- 1:09Speaker 3: Just please, please please, don't make this mean that there's
- 1:11Speaker 3: gonna be like one hundred and ten degree days in August.
- 1:14Speaker 4: That is true. You know, this past summer was my
- 1:17Speaker 4: first summer being a semi retired and not having responsibilities
- 1:21Speaker 4: of really doing much. And it was so hot that
- 1:26Speaker 4: I couldn't go out to joy the things I thought,
- 1:29Speaker 4: you know, when I retire, I'm want to go do
- 1:31Speaker 4: this and want to do that. It was a scorchy
- 1:34Speaker 4: hot even at Snowshoe that I'll gather up and go
- 1:38Speaker 4: off to quite often. It was rather warm up there,
- 1:42Speaker 4: but you did have the nice evenings. But yesterday I
- 1:46Speaker 4: snuck out and played golf for the first time.
- 1:49Speaker 3: Nice.
- 1:50Speaker 4: The weather was much better than my golf game. Sleepy
- 1:55Speaker 4: Hollow has Bermuda. It's dormant, and when you're it's just
- 2:00Speaker 4: an average golfer bast and you get into a terrain
- 2:03Speaker 4: that the fresh green grass is not present. Have you
- 2:08Speaker 4: hitting the rough? And I did hit a rough lot,
- 2:10Speaker 4: so I did have some rye grass to hit out of.
- 2:13Speaker 4: But I so enjoyed being out there. And I was
- 2:17Speaker 4: playing with a car man and he's younger than me,
- 2:20Speaker 4: and we are talking not much younger, and he's starting
- 2:22Speaker 4: to have visions of what it's going to be like
- 2:25Speaker 4: on the other side. And I told him, I said,
- 2:28Speaker 4: I could not took a roadmap and planned a better
- 2:33Speaker 4: sunsetting of a career and still doing what I love
- 2:36Speaker 4: to do is by automobiles, servicing the public when I
- 2:41Speaker 4: want to kind of my way, and not having any agendas.
- 2:45Speaker 4: And I've said this, it's almost whip from We'll say.
- 2:50Speaker 4: I'm not going to tell you it's not a profit standpoint,
- 2:52Speaker 4: but it's a hobby. And I know by talking to
- 2:56Speaker 4: the people I've bought cars from in the last couple
- 3:01Speaker 4: that I don't think if you called that one eight
- 3:04Speaker 4: hundred number or that great big dealership, they weren't going
- 3:07Speaker 4: to spend the time that it took for the individual's
- 3:11Speaker 4: I bought cars from. One. I'll keep it somewhat generic
- 3:16Speaker 4: because I'm not going to expose who they are, and
- 3:18Speaker 4: I do not do that. And I think when you
- 3:21Speaker 4: call a lot of places, they want emails, they want
- 3:24Speaker 4: phone numbers, they want the name of your pet dog,
- 3:28Speaker 4: they want everything, because they're probably gonna gathered up put
- 3:32Speaker 4: it in their computer system to be hicked at one
- 3:36Speaker 4: point or time. Possibly and sell it or use it
- 3:41Speaker 4: and bombard you with emails that you don't want to get.
- 3:45Speaker 3: Now, of course we talk about cars on this program,
- 3:46Speaker 3: but you bring up a great point right there, is
- 3:49Speaker 3: if you're not aware that all that data that you
- 3:52Speaker 3: give your phone and the tracking data that's on there
- 3:54Speaker 3: every time that you give a permission to an app,
- 3:56Speaker 3: and that you're okay with this, and you're okay with that,
- 3:58Speaker 3: so on and so forth, and you're like, what could
- 4:00Speaker 3: it hurt? What could it hurt? What could it hurt?
- 4:01Speaker 3: And look, I mean, hurt is a relative term because
- 4:04Speaker 3: it may not hurt you physically. However, do you like
- 4:07Speaker 3: the idea that all of this aggregate information can then
- 4:10Speaker 3: be funneled through a system that then determines the kind
- 4:12Speaker 3: of person that you are, reveals your family connections, reveals things.
- 4:16Speaker 3: I mean, because if you have enough people in your metadata,
- 4:19Speaker 3: when you and I are sitting in the same room,
- 4:21Speaker 3: they're not just getting my metadata and they're not just
- 4:22Speaker 3: getting your metadata, they're getting ours together and you can
- 4:25Speaker 3: derive different things from that. That's why predictive advertising seems
- 4:28Speaker 3: so like it's reading your mind. Sometimes it's not actually
- 4:31Speaker 3: listening to things or at least not all the time.
- 4:33Speaker 3: It's predicting off of your metadata that's all around you.
- 4:35Speaker 3: It's scary stuff.
- 4:36Speaker 4: Well, when you call three oh four five four, five zero,
- 4:40Speaker 4: two eleven, none of that. Yeah, it is the same
- 4:43Speaker 4: phone number I've had since nineteen eighty nine. I'm still Larry.
- 4:48Speaker 4: There's no AI. You're not going to have prompts to
- 4:51Speaker 4: push one, two, three four, and then you're gonna gonna
- 4:54Speaker 4: get lost in that space of the whole division of
- 4:59Speaker 4: phone service. You're going to get to speak to me,
- 5:02Speaker 4: and we're going to sit and talk. And you know,
- 5:04Speaker 4: if I feel that in the beginning there that you
- 5:07Speaker 4: know I'm probably not the right person or your situation
- 5:11Speaker 4: and what I do really doesn't connect that. I'm going
- 5:14Speaker 4: to tell you. I'm not going to lead you down
- 5:16Speaker 4: a rabbit hole, leading you or only really trying to
- 5:20Speaker 4: gather up information sell your car. You know, it gets
- 5:23Speaker 4: you into the big box store, because there is no
- 5:26Speaker 4: big box store. I received a phone call I don't
- 5:30Speaker 4: know three weeks ago from a banker, a professional banker.
- 5:34Speaker 4: He runs a lending department, and he shared with me
- 5:38Speaker 4: a situation of a client of his that had a
- 5:43Speaker 4: vehicle wanting to sell. Unfortunately, she had lost her husband.
- 5:49Speaker 4: And I called and we talked, and she had a
- 5:54Speaker 4: payment that was nearing one thousand dollars a month, and
- 5:57Speaker 4: she had suddenly lost her husband, and she had this vehicle.
- 6:00Speaker 4: And we talked a little bit more, and I asked
- 6:02Speaker 4: her for her address, only for me to go to
- 6:06Speaker 4: her house, not for me to impute it in a computer.
- 6:09Speaker 4: And I drove to her house snowy day. My gosh,
- 6:14Speaker 4: was it cold, Probably six eight ten inches of snow
- 6:18Speaker 4: on her vehicle. And I got out of my vehicle
- 6:21Speaker 4: and removed the snow. Now you think about that, I
- 6:27Speaker 4: got out and spent time to remove the snow from
- 6:29Speaker 4: her car. Her son brought me the keys. I looked
- 6:33Speaker 4: at it. She wasn't there. She was at a doctor's appointment. Unfortunately,
- 6:37Speaker 4: she has some health problems that requires her to be
- 6:40Speaker 4: an oxygen. After probably fifteen calls or text as she
- 6:47Speaker 4: and I discussing this situation and I'm making another trip
- 6:51Speaker 4: back to her house, we arrived at a number that
- 6:56Speaker 4: would work for both that was a payoff, and this instance,
- 7:02Speaker 4: the payoff was more than I was paying for the car.
- 7:06Speaker 4: So I had to walk her through how this was
- 7:09Speaker 4: to be done. And when I took her money, and
- 7:15Speaker 4: we had to go and trust because once again, because
- 7:18Speaker 4: of her situation, she was not able to go to
- 7:22Speaker 4: the bank to get me a certified check. And we're
- 7:26Speaker 4: not talking about a couple hundred dollars. But I went
- 7:30Speaker 4: on the gut filling in the trust and allowed her
- 7:34Speaker 4: to write me a personal check. I put with my money,
- 7:37Speaker 4: wrote a cashier's check, received one from Putnam County Bank.
- 7:42Speaker 4: And let me just tell you that the amount of
- 7:45Speaker 4: this was above forty thousand, so this was a substantial purchase.
- 7:53Speaker 4: And we did a transaction in her front room. I
- 7:56Speaker 4: had all the papers there. She sighed, and I removed
- 8:02Speaker 4: a car and went on and did my You know,
- 8:04Speaker 4: I did my job. I do not think you call
- 8:08Speaker 4: any of these one eight hundred numbers I want to
- 8:10Speaker 4: pay you too much money for your car box store.
- 8:13Speaker 4: No one would have done what I did.
- 8:16Speaker 3: There's just no question.
- 8:16Speaker 4: There is no way that they're going to take their time.
- 8:19Speaker 4: First of all, they're not the owner, right, they're not.
- 8:23Speaker 4: They're not driven. I'm driven by a passage.
- 8:25Speaker 3: They're invested, you know, they're just they're just doing a job, right.
- 8:27Speaker 4: I'm driven by my passion of the love of helping
- 8:31Speaker 4: people what their automobile needs. I do not charge, you know.
- 8:36Speaker 4: If I buy your car, that's great, and if I don't,
- 8:38Speaker 4: then we've shared, you know, we've had a conversation. Gentlemen
- 8:42Speaker 4: called me yesterday. I was getting on the actually getting
- 8:45Speaker 4: ready to play golf, and I told him so, I said,
- 8:47Speaker 4: I'm getting ready to play golf, but if you'll see
- 8:49Speaker 4: me a little bit of information from your car when
- 8:52Speaker 4: I get home or get done, I will research it
- 8:54Speaker 4: and we'll we'll take this step too. Well. That evening
- 8:57Speaker 4: I received information from his daughter, pictures and things I need,
- 9:02Speaker 4: and she's going to follow up today. And I don't
- 9:06Speaker 4: know if I'm gonna be able to buy the car.
- 9:07Speaker 4: I'm going to try, but it was a slow process.
- 9:11Speaker 4: It's not instant gratification. It was at Wambam, thank you.
- 9:14Speaker 4: You know, here's money, here's way too much money, and
- 9:17Speaker 4: grab your title and your car and have to go.
- 9:20Speaker 4: Most of the time, I come to you a lot
- 9:23Speaker 4: of times because people are busy, and if you have
- 9:27Speaker 4: a payoff and whether you're in deadness is more or
- 9:31Speaker 4: less than the valuation car. And trust me, there is
- 9:35Speaker 4: no correlation between what you owe and the value of
- 9:40Speaker 4: your car, because if there was, if you totaled your car,
- 9:45Speaker 4: you'd want to keep your car. Howked to one hundred
- 9:47Speaker 4: and twenty percent loan to value, of course, so they
- 9:50Speaker 4: would pay. As matter of fact, you might want to
- 9:52Speaker 4: go record, but that's not how it's the analogy of valuation.
- 9:57Speaker 3: And by the way, people at least I've been sort
- 10:02Speaker 3: of aware of people making that mistake in the past,
- 10:04Speaker 3: not understanding exactly how that whole thing works out. And
- 10:06Speaker 3: anytime you hear somebody say like get off my bump,
- 10:11Speaker 3: or you're gonna buy me a new car, you have
- 10:13Speaker 3: no idea what you have to go through. If that
- 10:14Speaker 3: actually happened, Please don't do that on purpose, because that's
- 10:16Speaker 3: really ridiculous. A couple of things that you've mentioned there
- 10:19Speaker 3: that I just wanted to highlight. First of all, you
- 10:22Speaker 3: mentioned about the big box stores not doing you know,
- 10:25Speaker 3: cleaning the car off, having trust to where you could
- 10:28Speaker 3: have the transaction take place in the timely manner, because
- 10:31Speaker 3: what you would have had there otherwise is a situation
- 10:33Speaker 3: where you might have had an escrow situation where you
- 10:35Speaker 3: had to wait for checks to clear. I mean, you
- 10:36Speaker 3: were able to take care of the situation in a
- 10:39Speaker 3: relatively short amount of time, because you have that ability
- 10:42Speaker 3: to make a decision on your own, to trust somebody
- 10:45Speaker 3: to make the transaction go through, even if you have
- 10:48Speaker 3: a big box store that's out there, or one of
- 10:50Speaker 3: the big national brands, or whoever it is who's talking
- 10:52Speaker 3: to somebody who's the employee of this company, whatever they're doing,
- 10:55Speaker 3: whoever that employee is, does not have your experience.
- 10:58Speaker 4: That's true. Also, to make this situation just a little
- 11:01Speaker 4: bit different, she had made this little bit under one
- 11:07Speaker 4: thousand dollars a month payment the day that we first met. Well,
- 11:12Speaker 4: it wasn't showing a credit on her payoff, so that
- 11:17Speaker 4: once again the timeline between the snow, the removing, me
- 11:21Speaker 4: going there, me talking to her. We waited for that
- 11:26Speaker 4: to post because it was a lot of money and
- 11:30Speaker 4: it reduced her balance to allow her to pay me
- 11:35Speaker 4: or pay less or a loan between the difference that
- 11:38Speaker 4: I was paying for the car and what she owed.
- 11:42Speaker 4: And that's maybe somewhat unusual, but it's not way off.
- 11:50Speaker 4: When I approached bank car last, let's see, two sundays ago,
- 11:55Speaker 4: I was going to the farm. It was shortly afternoon,
- 11:59Speaker 4: maybe fifteen after twelve on a Sunday. My phone rings
- 12:05Speaker 4: and I try to answer every phone call. I've got
- 12:07Speaker 4: a little laugh there, says Spam Risk. I'm not going
- 12:10Speaker 4: to talk to mister and missus Spam, but most of
- 12:12Speaker 4: the time I'll answer the phone. And the first thing
- 12:16Speaker 4: they said, they said, are you open? I said, well,
- 12:22Speaker 4: who is this and what can I do for you? Well,
- 12:26Speaker 4: this gentleman one sells car. It was a Sunday at
- 12:30Speaker 4: shortly afternoon, and he evidently knew who I was. He
- 12:35Speaker 4: said he had done business with me in the past.
- 12:37Speaker 4: I don't really recall him, but that's okay. After thirty
- 12:40Speaker 4: seven years, it became a bor and we talked a
- 12:43Speaker 4: little bit and I said, well, tell me what you're
- 12:45Speaker 4: wanting to do share with me. I said, I'm not open.
- 12:48Speaker 4: I'm really I mean, I got a I have a shine,
- 12:50Speaker 4: going to have an office. But let's see what we
- 12:53Speaker 4: can do for each other. Well, he told me, I
- 12:56Speaker 4: would say, he and I have had about five conversations.
- 13:02Speaker 4: And what people doesn't realize when you're coming to someone
- 13:05Speaker 4: like myself or to another dealer, and you're on the
- 13:10Speaker 4: pretending side of you just want to sell your car,
- 13:14Speaker 4: but you really are trying to get a number so
- 13:18Speaker 4: you can go shop.
- 13:19Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 13:19Speaker 4: Right, guess what, We automobile dealers talk. We don't hate
- 13:25Speaker 4: each other, and I kind of know what goes on
- 13:29Speaker 4: around in the valley, and most of the other automobile dealers
- 13:32Speaker 4: know because we converse. We go to auction houses, we
- 13:35Speaker 4: chit chat, we've lay off together. We do things that
- 13:41Speaker 4: we talk about automobiles and potential trades or potential purchase,
- 13:46Speaker 4: bouncing off one another about valuation, such as the gentleman
- 13:50Speaker 4: called me yesterday that I don't know, hopefully I'll buy
- 13:53Speaker 4: his car. But I said to him, I said, I'm
- 13:57Speaker 4: actually playing golf with another automobile man. Once you share
- 14:02Speaker 4: this information in between holes and while we're playing golf,
- 14:06Speaker 4: or maybe you know, after we get through playing golf,
- 14:10Speaker 4: I can bounce this off him and get two opinions
- 14:13Speaker 4: for the price of one, and we don't charge.
- 14:15Speaker 3: So that's a pretty good deal. You know. That's what
- 14:19Speaker 3: I do.
- 14:19Speaker 4: I do not know. Yes, there's algorithns I can put
- 14:22Speaker 4: in there and it will give me a number and
- 14:25Speaker 4: you can hit print and you're gonna get a piece
- 14:27Speaker 4: of paper. Try to get a check.
- 14:30Speaker 3: Based off that Yeah, that's.
- 14:31Speaker 4: Where the rubber meets.
- 14:32Speaker 3: It's like the people. You and I did a show
- 14:34Speaker 3: about this one time before, and I thought it was
- 14:36Speaker 3: really uh. I thought it was really insightful. It's like
- 14:38Speaker 3: the people that go in like the blue Book site
- 14:40Speaker 3: and they evaluate their own vehicle and then print out
- 14:43Speaker 3: the price. They're overestimating everything. It's in mint condition and
- 14:47Speaker 3: it has great tires, and you know, it's like all
- 14:49Speaker 3: this stuff. And then you look at the car that
- 14:51Speaker 3: that they're actually presenting to you. He's like, this isn't
- 14:53Speaker 3: the same car, man, what are you talking about it?
- 14:56Speaker 3: It's there's a problem when you have folks that get
- 14:59Speaker 3: their emotion involved in different things like that.
- 15:01Speaker 4: Well, I think most humans over evaluate their possession, for sure,
- 15:06Speaker 4: and because of their possessions, and to an automobile dealer,
- 15:12Speaker 4: to a relator, to your stockbroker, it is a commodity exchange,
- 15:20Speaker 4: and you're betting on the future, and many things can
- 15:23Speaker 4: happen instantly to adjust that future. About five years ago,
- 15:29Speaker 4: about this date, maybe within one week, I had to
- 15:34Speaker 4: post and announce that Larry Dawson's Auto Sales was closing
- 15:39Speaker 4: because of COVID. It's a game changer. Me. I shut
- 15:45Speaker 4: a business down as well as many other business. Many
- 15:50Speaker 4: other business was unable to open our doors. We're mandated
- 15:54Speaker 4: to shut down for a period of time. We did so,
- 15:58Speaker 4: but the bills kept coming. Said, if you don't think
- 16:02Speaker 4: things can change on a dime in the retail world,
- 16:06Speaker 4: it can you. And I did this show for a
- 16:09Speaker 4: few months. I was sitting at my house. You were
- 16:13Speaker 4: able to conduct the business, but I don't think your
- 16:16Speaker 4: sales reps were out calling on customers.
- 16:18Speaker 5: Now.
- 16:18Speaker 3: Oftentimes me and one other person are the only people
- 16:21Speaker 3: in the tang building.
- 16:22Speaker 4: I was the only one in my building, and I
- 16:25Speaker 4: would go there simply simply to answer the phone. I
- 16:28Speaker 4: don't have one of those fancy answering services. And I
- 16:32Speaker 4: tell you a little bit more about these answering services.
- 16:34Speaker 4: If I've spoke of the NULLI I bought it NW
- 16:38Speaker 4: It's a thirteen model. I still have it. It's garage
- 16:41Speaker 4: kept and I changed oil. When in every five thousand
- 16:43Speaker 4: miles at a particular gem store, local gym store near me,
- 16:49Speaker 4: I know the gentleman that worked there for years in
- 16:51Speaker 4: the service advisor. I'd always tax them call and say, hey, Keith,
- 16:55Speaker 4: could I just run my car by Yeah, sure, Larry,
- 16:58Speaker 4: come on down. Well he retired. So I called the
- 17:05Speaker 4: landline four straight days, Oh yeah, no answer. On the
- 17:12Speaker 4: fifth day I finally got through because Kim was gonna
- 17:15Speaker 4: take it to Nashville. That they answered. I asked for
- 17:20Speaker 4: the service department. I got put on internal hold, and
- 17:25Speaker 4: finally appointment was set up for like three days from
- 17:29Speaker 4: the day I called. I took it to the gym
- 17:33Speaker 4: store in South Charleston built this brand new, spectacular wool
- 17:39Speaker 4: chain center, and within an hour I was back. No
- 17:44Speaker 4: phone calls, didn't have to call it, just drove in.
- 17:47Speaker 4: I think Joey Holland and Brett they have a wonderful
- 17:51Speaker 4: idea there. And all I want to do was go
- 17:53Speaker 4: down to the local down the street. No one answered
- 17:57Speaker 4: the phone. This this autumn answering system. You can't sell
- 18:03Speaker 4: me on that, because you're talking to a gentleman that
- 18:06Speaker 4: I believe I was taught very well to start selling
- 18:10Speaker 4: the minute you answered the phone.
- 18:12Speaker 3: You know what's happening is this is the the camel's
- 18:16Speaker 3: nose under the tent, so to speak, of just completely
- 18:19Speaker 3: doing away with customer service altogether. I've been noticing it
- 18:23Speaker 3: more and more recently you can't get a hold. You
- 18:25Speaker 3: can't get ahold of people anymore. You can't, even if
- 18:27Speaker 3: it used to be, if you try to escalate anything,
- 18:29Speaker 3: even with a big company, there were certain phrases you
- 18:31Speaker 3: had to say, I must, I must talk to your
- 18:34Speaker 3: manager right now, you know, Will you escalate this to
- 18:37Speaker 3: your to your supervisor or whatever. There are certain keys.
- 18:40Speaker 3: People just say, I'm so sorry that you've had trouble.
- 18:42Speaker 3: What else can I do to assist you? Nothing any
- 18:44Speaker 3: of the talk to your boss. I'm so sorry. I
- 18:45Speaker 3: can't do that. What can I do to They just
- 18:46Speaker 3: won't they won't.
- 18:47Speaker 4: They just refuse coll a small independent business person.
- 18:50Speaker 3: Yeah, answer the phone and resolve your issue whatever it is,
- 18:54Speaker 3: or try to.
- 18:55Speaker 4: They'll give you some type of direction in the same
- 18:58Speaker 4: period of time. I own a venture. It's an articulate
- 19:02Speaker 4: steer front front load to mower, and I've had it
- 19:06Speaker 4: since it's noon. I'm a big oil change person. I
- 19:10Speaker 4: called the big box store out here on Davis Creek
- 19:13Speaker 4: Accent that sells vent Trax that go through. All I
- 19:18Speaker 4: wanted was an oil change called an independent down the street.
- 19:22Speaker 4: It was done that day because they answered the phone.
- 19:25Speaker 4: You can't sell me on the idea of how these
- 19:28Speaker 4: answering machines they're gathering up as much a first of all,
- 19:31Speaker 4: when you call, they got your number, and don't think
- 19:33Speaker 4: they don't store it, and they have this information. And
- 19:37Speaker 4: I do not understand why you don't take the next
- 19:41Speaker 4: step by just answering the phone.
- 19:44Speaker 3: They work so hard to keep from answering the phone.
- 19:46Speaker 3: I mean, that's the crazy thing.
- 19:47Speaker 4: It is a crazy thing. And I just in my
- 19:50Speaker 4: years of having a small business and watching my father
- 19:55Speaker 4: have a small business, I was taught to answer the
- 19:58Speaker 4: telephone in try to give some sense of caring in
- 20:03Speaker 4: my voice that how can I assist you? And you
- 20:07Speaker 4: don't get everyone. I've never sit down and put a
- 20:11Speaker 4: pencil to how many phone calls I receive or selling
- 20:15Speaker 4: the car versus how many I buy. But I'm okay
- 20:18Speaker 4: with that number. I'm not discouraged it.
- 20:21Speaker 3: It's just amazing there's people out there, and they're businesses.
- 20:24Speaker 3: They'll have Facebook pages and web pages and phone numbers
- 20:28Speaker 3: to call it, you know, on and on and on
- 20:30Speaker 3: and all it ends up being is this circle of
- 20:32Speaker 3: misery where you're leaving unanswered messages everywhere. You know, It's
- 20:35Speaker 3: like nobody it's like it's it's just making you follow
- 20:39Speaker 3: the bouncing ball to the next place to leave a message,
- 20:41Speaker 3: and you just never get a return call. I mean,
- 20:43Speaker 3: it's it's like they're trying to play the long game
- 20:45Speaker 3: right off the clock, so to speak. Eventually, you're just
- 20:47Speaker 3: gonna get sick of leaving messages and you'll forget about
- 20:49Speaker 3: whatever your problem wants to start with.
- 20:50Speaker 4: I guess, well, that's why we need to support our
- 20:54Speaker 4: small business people.
- 20:56Speaker 3: That's absolutely true. The folks that you can talk to
- 20:58Speaker 3: are the folks that's going to help you out. There's
- 20:59Speaker 3: no d out about that. Larry happens to be one
- 21:01Speaker 3: of those. You can give us a call this morning

- 22:51Speaker 5: Good morning, here's your traffic update. A vehicle fire on
- 22:53Speaker 5: I sixty four East at mile marker fifty at the
- 22:56Speaker 5: Institute entrance in Kanaul County. There's maintenance on I seventy
- 23:00Speaker 5: seven South toll between mile marker ninety point five and
- 23:04Speaker 5: mile marker ninety right around Marmett and congestion and delays
- 23:08Speaker 5: on I sixty four East at mile marker fifty eight.
- 23:11Speaker 5: At Virginia Street. Drive safely. I'm Chapel in the WCHS
- 23:15Speaker 5: Network Traffic studio.
- 23:29Speaker 3: You're listening to us the expert WCHS the Voice of Charleston.
- 23:32Speaker 3: I'm del Skeeper. Thanks for tuning in on this Wednesday morning.
- 23:35Speaker 3: We've already talked about the weather outside. It is beautiful
- 23:37Speaker 3: out there. If you want to give Larry Dawson a
- 23:39Speaker 3: call this morning, you're one welcome to do that. Three
- 23:41Speaker 3: zero four three four two eight one three one three
- 23:43Speaker 3: zero four three four two eight one three one. Give
- 23:44Speaker 3: a shout out to Stephanie, who'll be answering the call
- 23:47Speaker 3: if you want to say hot to her over there
- 23:49Speaker 3: in our producer's chair this morning, you can give Larry
- 23:51Speaker 3: a call once again. Three zero four three four two
- 23:53Speaker 3: eight one three one. You can text over any questions
- 23:55Speaker 3: or comments you have as well to three zero four
- 23:57Speaker 3: none three five five zer zero eight three zero four
- 23:59Speaker 3: nine three five five zero zero eight one.
- 24:03Speaker 4: Other thing we talked about on break that when you're
- 24:07Speaker 4: dealing with a business that doesn't want to talk, they
- 24:13Speaker 4: want to send emails on text. It's amazing how fast
- 24:19Speaker 4: they'll send you a link where you can give them
- 24:22Speaker 4: your credit card number because it happened to me Dell
- 24:27Speaker 4: and I was discussing, I'm getting ready to break relationships
- 24:32Speaker 4: with a company because they don't want to talk. They
- 24:38Speaker 4: just want to text on their time. And you have
- 24:42Speaker 4: to be careful when you give that credit card because
- 24:45Speaker 4: it's instant. They'll draw that money out of your account,
- 24:49Speaker 4: and you have to also be careful. There's not a
- 24:52Speaker 4: little tiny box in there that says it will be
- 24:55Speaker 4: drawn annually.
- 24:56Speaker 3: Yeah, right, or monthly or whatever the case may be.
- 24:58Speaker 4: Yeah, alutely try to undo that, Yeah right, who you
- 25:00Speaker 4: gonna call? You're not going to get an answer.
- 25:04Speaker 3: Sometimes all you can do is call your credit card
- 25:05Speaker 3: company and hope to be still.
- 25:06Speaker 4: Us exactly right. So be very careful. That's why if
- 25:11Speaker 4: you go into Center Hardware and see JD or one
- 25:16Speaker 4: of the fellows, they're gonna shake your hand. They're going
- 25:18Speaker 4: to take you back here and show you that part.
- 25:20Speaker 4: You have no idea what it is you're trying to explain.
- 25:23Speaker 4: They're gonna walk you up front and they're going to
- 25:25Speaker 4: have a cash register and they're going to help you
- 25:28Speaker 4: in case it's the wrong one that you can come
- 25:30Speaker 4: back and see the same person. And that is wonderful.
- 25:34Speaker 4: Will you pay a little bit more? I don't know
- 25:36Speaker 4: what's the cost of service. What is the cost of service?
- 25:41Speaker 4: Service of my view is the person will talk to you,
- 25:44Speaker 4: help you along, regardless if you're buying their service or not,
- 25:48Speaker 4: but least instruct you in a way that you feel
- 25:50Speaker 4: a little bit better educated about your process. And so
- 25:55Speaker 4: many times that I see people that they'll get ahead
- 26:00Speaker 4: of their skis, and when you're skiing and you get
- 26:04Speaker 4: out over your skis, you're going to crash and it
- 26:07Speaker 4: probably's not gonna be in a good way. So just
- 26:10Speaker 4: lean back and listen and let people do their job.
- 26:14Speaker 4: Somebody is going to help you, and yes it's going
- 26:17Speaker 4: to be at a cost, but at least you're getting
- 26:20Speaker 4: a service.
- 26:21Speaker 3: Hey, we did have a text message. You came in
- 26:23Speaker 3: a very general question, but it leads to some interesting topics.
- 26:26Speaker 3: Threes are four four pin five one of the most
- 26:28Speaker 3: sought after cars.
- 26:30Speaker 4: It seems like, especially at this season, we have a
- 26:34Speaker 4: lot of youngsters that's coming out. They're either going to
- 26:38Speaker 4: be going to high or excuse me, they're going to
- 26:40Speaker 4: be driving going to the high school or the college.
- 26:43Speaker 4: But this time of year, when I was in the
- 26:45Speaker 4: retail business. I'm no longer, but once that when I
- 26:48Speaker 4: was for many years, it was I called the kids car,
- 26:51Speaker 4: this is the season. And also you have a pinned
- 26:55Speaker 4: up demand. We missed probably ten days in January and
- 26:59Speaker 4: ten days in February. And the retail business there's a
- 27:02Speaker 4: little pinned up in oh. People once out, when they
- 27:06Speaker 4: get out, they want to spend money. So I suspect
- 27:09Speaker 4: the automobile dealers as well as other retail outlets has
- 27:13Speaker 4: been quite busy. I bet you there was a line
- 27:15Speaker 4: at Low's and the nurseries trying to buy plants and
- 27:19Speaker 4: all that.
- 27:19Speaker 3: Of course, yeah, you get that first one day and
- 27:21Speaker 3: you're ready to plint your garden.
- 27:23Speaker 4: This you know, the first early signs of springs. It
- 27:27Speaker 4: creates activity, boats, RVs, automobiles. But the most cars that's
- 27:33Speaker 4: going to be purchased is going I call it kids car.
- 27:36Speaker 4: Is it's going to be that starter car they're going
- 27:39Speaker 4: off to school. I used to hear this all the time, Larry,
- 27:42Speaker 4: I just want a safe car. My answer always was
- 27:46Speaker 4: the safeness starts with the driver. There is no safe
- 27:49Speaker 4: car if you drive us recklessly, if you text and
- 27:51Speaker 4: you drive down the road, if you drink and drive
- 27:53Speaker 4: down the road, you know, any car. But if you
- 27:57Speaker 4: teach safety, and I've always been and that's always been answer,
- 28:00Speaker 4: there's no safe car this, you know, it's with the
- 28:03Speaker 4: driver itself. You cannot for some reason, I think the
- 28:08Speaker 4: last two days out on the Interstate around across the house, Yeah,
- 28:11Speaker 4: there's been horrific. Actually, I don't think any of those
- 28:14Speaker 4: people got up said I will go wreck today.
- 28:16Speaker 3: Yeah. I almost got ran over downtown Charleston yesterday by
- 28:18Speaker 3: somebody that blew through a crosswalk, and of course I stopped,
- 28:22Speaker 3: didn't step off the curb in time, and caught a
- 28:26Speaker 3: view through the window as they were speeding past me,
- 28:28Speaker 3: past the area where they would have hit me if
- 28:29Speaker 3: I didn't step back on the curb, And of course
- 28:31Speaker 3: they were just looking straight down on their phones. Oh,
- 28:33Speaker 3: just drove straight through the intersection. We're looking straight down
- 28:35Speaker 3: on their phone. I mean, seriously, I was three steps
- 28:37Speaker 3: away from getting hit by a car.
- 28:38Speaker 4: Go to most stop lights, oh I can't. And there's
- 28:43Speaker 4: a delay because they're trying to send up to.
- 28:45Speaker 3: There's two things. There's a delay, and maybe they work
- 28:48Speaker 3: out together quite frankly, because there's a delay before the
- 28:50Speaker 3: person after light goes on green, and then they're the
- 28:53Speaker 3: person who's busy looking at text when they're going towards
- 28:55Speaker 3: the yellow light and doesn't know that it turns red
- 28:57Speaker 3: and they blow through it by seconds. I have to
- 28:59Speaker 3: treat every light canall city like a stop sign, even
- 29:01Speaker 3: when it's green, because everybody blows those red lights down there.
- 29:04Speaker 4: It's so dangerous these telephones. I don't know what the
- 29:07Speaker 4: answer is the texting and driving, but it starts teaching
- 29:11Speaker 4: them very young not to do that. I've said this
- 29:14Speaker 4: on the show, and I don't guess there is a
- 29:16Speaker 4: way to do it. But if the option in an
- 29:19Speaker 4: opmobile that a parent could drive by, a parent could
- 29:23Speaker 4: buy for their starter child in a car, or even themselves,
- 29:28Speaker 4: is block cells phones.
- 29:30Speaker 3: Well, you know how when you're in some of the
- 29:32Speaker 3: cars and they have the smart systems to set up,
- 29:34Speaker 3: if you're in drive, you can't set them up. It
- 29:36Speaker 3: says you must be not moving in order to use this.
- 29:39Speaker 3: Even if you have a passenger trying to set it
- 29:41Speaker 3: up for you while you're driving, you can't do it.
- 29:42Speaker 3: You have to be immobile to do it. So I
- 29:44Speaker 3: do wonder if there's some sort of like a dampener
- 29:47Speaker 3: or like like a like a localized unit that I
- 29:50Speaker 3: don't know. There's probably no way to do it, and
- 29:52Speaker 3: people would complain anyway. But I'm telling you, man, I
- 29:55Speaker 3: mean people complained about seat belts and thought that seat
- 29:57Speaker 3: belts were a bad idea. They're not going to like
- 29:59Speaker 3: the fact that if you try to regulate cell phone useage.
- 30:01Speaker 3: But frankly, it would be just as prominent of a
- 30:04Speaker 3: life saving measure if we could find some way to
- 30:06Speaker 3: get people off their phones while they're driving.
- 30:08Speaker 4: It would help small business because there's a lot of
- 30:12Speaker 4: texting going on during business hours that's probably not business related.
- 30:17Speaker 4: And you know, once again, I'm kind of a nobody now.
- 30:22Speaker 4: I'm just a solo practitioner that's enjoying myself. I feel
- 30:25Speaker 4: like I had this rock band for all these years,
- 30:29Speaker 4: and I had all these players, and we traveled and
- 30:31Speaker 4: we did our business and cut records and had fun
- 30:34Speaker 4: and all that, and it was time to retire. So
- 30:37Speaker 4: I decided I want to cut a few singles by myself.
- 30:39Speaker 3: Okay, all right, I got you, So that's.
- 30:41Speaker 4: What I'm doing. Yeah, I'm just I hope that looked Betterfield.
- 30:46Speaker 4: God bless her today.
- 30:47Speaker 3: Anyway, right against all odds. Right.
- 30:48Speaker 4: But I feel like that's kind of me, is that
- 30:52Speaker 4: I still didn't want to lay the guitar down or
- 30:54Speaker 4: what the instrument was. In my case, it was, you know,
- 30:57Speaker 4: the buying of automobiles and a knowledge I had or
- 31:01Speaker 4: have maybe had. I think I still have it, but
- 31:05Speaker 4: go out and do what I do best, and that
- 31:07Speaker 4: allows me. First of all, I'm having fun and I
- 31:12Speaker 4: put a thing on fake book the other day. But
- 31:15Speaker 4: we buy cars, and we had we buy cars every day,
- 31:18Speaker 4: and I had three or four people said, we're you located,
- 31:21Speaker 4: welcome back and you come out of retirement. No, no, no.
- 31:24Speaker 3: It's me.
- 31:25Speaker 4: And I text one. I said, look, I'm still just me.
- 31:29Speaker 4: I'm semi retired. I'm enjoying myself. I never went to
- 31:32Speaker 4: my office yesterday. I played golf. But guess what I
- 31:34Speaker 4: did business and hopefully once again, I'm going to buy
- 31:37Speaker 4: this honta from a gentleman that was referred to me
- 31:41Speaker 4: and I was able to do it at my time
- 31:44Speaker 4: my leisure. Yesterday evening I was down Tammy's kitchen or
- 31:48Speaker 4: in Fraser's bottom, eating dinner. When the follow up texts
- 31:53Speaker 4: of the pictures and the information so today when I
- 31:56Speaker 4: leave here, I've got an appointment now actually I'm having
- 31:59Speaker 4: common create late tomorrow down to farm, so I've got
- 32:02Speaker 4: to run down there, but I'll get back with them,
- 32:04Speaker 4: and then I've got a couple of other duties. But
- 32:06Speaker 4: so I'm not neglecting. I'm just not taking it all
- 32:09Speaker 4: one Once I did. It was a It was a
- 32:11Speaker 4: balancing act after COVID. First of all, business got really
- 32:15Speaker 4: good and cars got very short, and the pressure I
- 32:19Speaker 4: put on myself to try to buy it, to satisfy
- 32:21Speaker 4: it for the public, and to overcome my own objectives
- 32:26Speaker 4: I set for myself every day in life. That it
- 32:29Speaker 4: was really a stressful situation, you know. And then on
- 32:33Speaker 4: top of that have a life. So the time came
- 32:37Speaker 4: and the Stevens Automotive Group came along. We made a deal.
- 32:42Speaker 4: I'm next door in the little building that I occupy
- 32:45Speaker 4: and we're buying cars and we buy. I mean it
- 32:50Speaker 4: would it will probably shock you how many cars I buy.
- 32:53Speaker 4: But I do it at my time. And what I
- 32:55Speaker 4: tell people is that something I'm doing works because I
- 33:01Speaker 4: have successful results. Do I get them one? Can I
- 33:05Speaker 4: take them on note? But lots of times I'll share
- 33:09Speaker 4: information with you, and I'll tell him, said you need
- 33:11Speaker 4: to trade. You don't need to sell because you're gonna
- 33:15Speaker 4: lose your sales tax credit. And I've explained that. Jim
- 33:19Speaker 4: Harrison's called me the other day. I bought three or
- 33:21Speaker 4: four cars from Jim and sold Jim cars businessman. I
- 33:24Speaker 4: said them to. I said, Jim, think about you probably
- 33:27Speaker 4: ought to trade six percent or in a very expensive
- 33:30Speaker 4: car you got, and he said, yeah, you're probably right.
- 33:33Speaker 4: I said, just go buy that new car and trade
- 33:35Speaker 4: your's in. All is good. Now. Did I make any
- 33:37Speaker 4: money on that, No, But the last two I bought
- 33:40Speaker 4: from him and his brother. And you got to put
- 33:43Speaker 4: it all together. You know, you can shear a sheep
- 33:46Speaker 4: twenty times, you can only kill it once.
- 33:48Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah. When you treat everything as a transaction, you know,
- 33:51Speaker 3: a transactional nature, you never look far enough down the road.
- 33:54Speaker 3: And one of the things I just wanted to highlight
- 33:56Speaker 3: a little bit. And I was just thinking about this
- 33:58Speaker 3: as you were talking and talking about what you were
- 33:59Speaker 3: doing after your semi retirement and stuff like that. Years ago,
- 34:02Speaker 3: I inherited a show from Mike Acnello that I took
- 34:04Speaker 3: over here called Business Matters, and I kind of took
- 34:06Speaker 3: it over because I had been a small business owner
- 34:08Speaker 3: in the past, and so I enjoyed it was basically
- 34:11Speaker 3: new businesses coming into the valley talking to them about
- 34:14Speaker 3: issues and opening up, or ones that had been around
- 34:16Speaker 3: for a while that had run into hurdles or whatever
- 34:18Speaker 3: it might be. And the thing that I love about
- 34:20Speaker 3: the conversation, and it's sort of the one we're having now,
- 34:23Speaker 3: but especially since your semi retirement and you've come back
- 34:26Speaker 3: to doing the radio just for yourself, is simply you're
- 34:29Speaker 3: the bookend to the beginning of that conversation and the
- 34:33Speaker 3: arc that you were on. Now. I'm sure that everybody
- 34:35Speaker 3: would like to retire as a billionaire or whatever, but
- 34:37Speaker 3: not everybody can. You can be successful within your business,
- 34:40Speaker 3: be happy, and do what you want to do as
- 34:43Speaker 3: you start getting older, and I think that you are
- 34:45Speaker 3: the perfect example of that. I mean, you worked your
- 34:47Speaker 3: tail end off, there's no question about that. But now
- 34:49Speaker 3: you're kind of working your tail end off the way
- 34:51Speaker 3: that you want to and able to do things that
- 34:53Speaker 3: you want to do, and you do what you basically
- 34:55Speaker 3: kind of like you know, I mean, that's it doesn't
- 34:57Speaker 3: really get much better than that. I guess you could
- 34:59Speaker 3: win the lottery, but other than that, it doesn't get
- 35:01Speaker 3: much better.
- 35:01Speaker 4: How many coaches retired? That goes back to help, how
- 35:06Speaker 4: many school teachers retire? That goes back to absolutely they
- 35:10Speaker 4: have that passion.
- 35:11Speaker 3: Well, enform tons of people to do it.
- 35:13Speaker 4: They have a passion. Are they wanting to burn it
- 35:16Speaker 4: at both ends? No, they've burned it at both ends.
- 35:19Speaker 4: And I think a coach, regardless of what sport, I mean,
- 35:23Speaker 4: that's burning it at both ends. I mean that's twenty
- 35:25Speaker 4: four to seven and you're dealing with parents, You're dealing
- 35:27Speaker 4: with children, you're daring, dealing with the school system, travel
- 35:33Speaker 4: all of schedually. I mean that is I don't think
- 35:36Speaker 4: I could ever. I think I could coach like the
- 35:39Speaker 4: assistant assistance assistant I got to water, but to get
- 35:45Speaker 4: in and do it. But when they have that passion,
- 35:48Speaker 4: they might lay that ball down, but they'll go back
- 35:52Speaker 4: and say, hey, if you need some help. I often thought,
- 35:56Speaker 4: and I have been asked, and I've said no up
- 35:58Speaker 4: to this point. But I've had a few lawyers approach
- 36:02Speaker 4: me about doing some expert test work, testimony work as
- 36:07Speaker 4: a witness, and I used to do that, and I've
- 36:12Speaker 4: had a couple ask me, and I'm not so sure
- 36:14Speaker 4: that that might not be something that I pick up again.
- 36:19Speaker 4: It's it is fun and you're doing a service. You're
- 36:24Speaker 4: bringing your expertise to a situation that needs to be resolved.
- 36:29Speaker 4: And that's what I liked about it. And in the
- 36:32Speaker 4: cases I've done it, and I've done it for a
- 36:34Speaker 4: few attorneys that I've really got to know. Actually one
- 36:36Speaker 4: of them I did years ago and we have established
- 36:39Speaker 4: a friendship and his cell phone, his personal cell phone
- 36:43Speaker 4: is on my computer today, said if you ever need me,
- 36:47Speaker 4: And this is probably a very he's a very high
- 36:50Speaker 4: end lawyer in this town. But we hit on. We
- 36:53Speaker 4: were okay with each other, and I provided a service
- 36:56Speaker 4: and it's something I've been thinking about doing that that
- 37:00Speaker 4: I may do it and maybe a little bit of
- 37:02Speaker 4: consulting work. I was approached about two weeks ago and
- 37:05Speaker 4: said will you come in and maybe do a little consulting.
- 37:08Speaker 4: I said, let me think about it. You know, it
- 37:11Speaker 4: depends on how much you need of me in the
- 37:14Speaker 4: automobile world. But I've got a wealth of knowledge in
- 37:18Speaker 4: my head that you know, I'm passing a lot of
- 37:21Speaker 4: it on free, and in some cases I'm able to
- 37:25Speaker 4: charge for it, and it's a shame to let it
- 37:29Speaker 4: go completely wastely, because one day this old brain's not
- 37:32Speaker 4: gonna work like it is today. I actually think, in
- 37:36Speaker 4: my heart of hearts, I'm at the top of my game.
- 37:39Speaker 4: I really do, as far as evaluation and understanding people,
- 37:44Speaker 4: especially understanding needs. Because I'm on the outside now looking in.
- 37:48Speaker 4: I'm not an in looking out. I understand and if
- 37:51Speaker 4: I can help, you can call me. You'll find it
- 37:54Speaker 4: very easy to talk to or text me. I do
- 37:57Speaker 4: this a lot. I'll text someone and I said, can
- 38:00Speaker 4: you take a call? I did this to my secretary
- 38:03Speaker 4: this morning. I said, can you take a call? Because
- 38:06Speaker 4: she maybe does that. I don't know she had any
- 38:08Speaker 4: she had a dentist appointment. But I'll ask people, I said,
- 38:11Speaker 4: just text me, ask me if I'm freed up, and
- 38:14Speaker 4: when I can, I'll call you back.
- 38:16Speaker 3: That's great stuff. Oh yeah, of course. And Larry always
- 38:18Speaker 3: does a great job with that. And Larry is on
