- 0:04Speaker 1: NHL Unscripted is a production of the NHL and iHeart Podcasts.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Great to have you with us here on NHL Unscripted.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Bye bye, mister Skin. That's right, the Sharks placing forward
- 0:27Speaker 1: Jeff Skinner on unconditional waivers. We'll talk about that sent
- 0:30Speaker 1: file and sixty ping image, the Great Robert duvall our
- 0:32Speaker 1: Favorik Conselieri, our special guest, Joey Decor.
- 0:35Speaker 2: That's right.
- 0:36Speaker 1: The goalie has been having a terrific year so farm
- 0:38Speaker 1: with Seattle. But of course we're talking a lot about goalies,
- 0:40Speaker 1: the Swaymen, whiff among others. As what's been a really
- 0:43Speaker 1: exciting Olympic so far. Well, first and foremost, it's good
- 0:46Speaker 1: that me and Talery even here because quite honestly, if
- 0:48Speaker 1: Canada had lost that game would have been Nate Thompson
- 0:50Speaker 1: hosting NHL in Scripted solo here for episode sixty nine.
- 0:53Speaker 1: Jason new Burrs is going to join us from Milano. Listen.
- 0:55Speaker 1: I was ready to call it the rad Co Guddas
- 0:57Speaker 1: game here Nat. He was unbelievable. CHECKI has been such
- 1:00Speaker 1: a challenge for Candid. I've seen in the World Juniors
- 1:02Speaker 1: they've ousted Canada the last few years and this game.
- 1:04Speaker 1: I remember going into prelim round, Bruce Berdroe said to me, well,
- 1:07Speaker 1: the toughest game Canada is going to face the prelim
- 1:09Speaker 1: round is check.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:10Speaker 1: Then of course Canada wins a five one to go,
- 1:11Speaker 1: so much for that. We're just going to dominate this thing.
- 1:13Speaker 1: And then today was completely different, as CHECKI have played
- 1:16Speaker 1: great at a three to two lead late in this one.
- 1:18Speaker 1: Canada was able to put it out, but a lot
- 1:21Speaker 1: of people double jugging their La Bats and their Molson's,
- 1:24Speaker 1: as Mitch Marter a great individual effort. Your thoughts of
- 1:27Speaker 1: what was a wild quarterfinal game as Canada escapes with
- 1:30Speaker 1: a victory.
- 1:31Speaker 3: Well, first kudos to check you because I agree with
- 1:34Speaker 3: you Avy. I thought they played a fantastic game, especially
- 1:37Speaker 3: in the third period. I thought they kind of poured
- 1:38Speaker 3: it on and and without saying and stating the obvious,
- 1:43Speaker 3: I think we have the right goaltender for a team Canada,
- 1:46Speaker 3: and Jordan Bennington, I think I think he was the
- 1:49Speaker 3: best player today four team Canada and if it wasn't
- 1:51Speaker 3: for him, Canada wouldn't be moving on right now. So
- 1:55Speaker 3: I mean that that's a big takeaway for me and
- 1:58Speaker 3: you know check you. On top of that, I think, yeah,
- 1:59Speaker 3: you have to give credit to a lot of players.
- 2:01Speaker 3: I mean, David Passeranak was good. I mean some of
- 2:03Speaker 3: their old older guys. Trevnka, I thought, had a really
- 2:06Speaker 3: good game. And then do Stall I mean, he's he's
- 2:09Speaker 3: done it all year for Anaheim and he was he
- 2:11Speaker 3: was doing it for them today. Made it really tough
- 2:13Speaker 3: for Team Canada. And then of course, you know, losing
- 2:16Speaker 3: Sydney Crosby like they did during the game is going
- 2:19Speaker 3: to be tough, so we'll have to you know, monitor
- 2:21Speaker 3: that and see where he's at. But I think overall,
- 2:24Speaker 3: you wanted to see Canada's depth come through, and it
- 2:28Speaker 3: finally did you know, with Suzuki scoring, you know, I
- 2:31Speaker 3: think hell of a tip And I think there's been
- 2:35Speaker 3: a lot of question marks about him, but I think
- 2:36Speaker 3: it was a matter of him getting comfortable playing with
- 2:38Speaker 3: the right guys whatever, and you're feeling is feeling his way.
- 2:41Speaker 3: And then Mitchie Marner man Mitchie Marner magic in overtime,
- 2:46Speaker 3: he does his thing like he did last year at
- 2:48Speaker 3: four Nations. So I mean, this is if you're gonna
- 2:50Speaker 3: take a positive out of this for Team Canada, it's
- 2:53Speaker 3: it's a tested game. It's a game they had to
- 2:55Speaker 3: deal with adversity and and show some character and come
- 2:58Speaker 3: back and win.
- 2:58Speaker 2: So those things only help you in a tournament like this.
- 3:02Speaker 1: Yeah, hopefully things have a little smither for after this.
- 3:04Speaker 1: We'll find out. But like he said, you get tested,
- 3:06Speaker 1: you prove your resolve. Mitch Marner certainly was fantastic because
- 3:09Speaker 1: he scores a great individual effort. Normally known for his passing,
- 3:11Speaker 1: but this time Mitchie just took it upon his back
- 3:13Speaker 1: Halva backhound. Knada looked vulnerable, able to come through and
- 3:16Speaker 1: echo your point on Bennington, I mean, when John Cooper
- 3:18Speaker 1: has asked who his goalie was going to be, he
- 3:20Speaker 1: said Bennington. When he was asked when the decision was
- 3:22Speaker 1: made before the Olympics started, he said three hundred and
- 3:24Speaker 1: fifty eight days ago, once they beat the US the
- 3:26Speaker 1: four Nations, he was going to be his guy. And
- 3:28Speaker 1: credit to Cooper sticking with him, because you're right. A
- 3:30Speaker 1: lot of people said he's had a disappointing NHL season.
- 3:32Speaker 1: Logan Thompson is at a better year. But dinner was awesome,
- 3:35Speaker 1: especially Martin Nach's and those breakaways like that is I
- 3:37Speaker 1: mean it's one save, and it's ballgame, and and unbelievable
- 3:41Speaker 1: he was able to step up. You mentioned Crosby. By
- 3:44Speaker 1: the time this is released, people have an update on
- 3:46Speaker 1: what's going on with Sid, but goes to the leg
- 3:47Speaker 1: injury after playing less than six minutes in this game
- 3:50Speaker 1: did not return waiting for an update on the injury.
- 3:52Speaker 1: Heading into the Olympics, the biggest concern was the risk
- 3:54Speaker 1: of players getting injured here. That fear has already been realized,
- 3:57Speaker 1: as Kevin Fiala done for the season, fracturing his left
- 4:01Speaker 1: leg in eclision with Tom Wilson just a few minutes
- 4:03Speaker 1: left and switched one's five to one prelim round loss
- 4:05Speaker 1: to Canada. LA acquired archimy Paneren from the Rangers right
- 4:09Speaker 1: before the Olympic roster shut them to bolster that offense,
- 4:11Speaker 1: which has been one of the worst of the league.
- 4:13Speaker 1: Now they've lost Fiala eighteen goals forty points in fifty
- 4:17Speaker 1: six games. Again with Sid if he's out, obviously, this
- 4:19Speaker 1: would crush the Penguins, but already for the Kings in
- 4:21Speaker 1: Fiela Nate. It's a worst case scenario for these teams
- 4:24Speaker 1: and their fan base is just hoping these players come
- 4:26Speaker 1: back healthy.
- 4:28Speaker 3: Yeah, this is the risk that they always take, right,
- 4:30Speaker 3: maybe this is every year. And this is why I
- 4:32Speaker 3: think that it's been such a struggle to get NHL
- 4:35Speaker 3: players to play in the Olympics is because there's that
- 4:37Speaker 3: risk of injury and the league and the owners losing
- 4:40Speaker 3: star players to this international tournament.
- 4:44Speaker 2: So I think that's always the risk.
- 4:45Speaker 3: But at the same time, you know how much these
- 4:47Speaker 3: players care, they want to play, you know, they take
- 4:50Speaker 3: pride in playing for their country. But of course you
- 4:52Speaker 3: never want to see this with Kevin Fialai. You know,
- 4:54Speaker 3: I feel for him, and I feel for the Kings.
- 4:57Speaker 3: It's just very tough luck. And then of course, you
- 4:59Speaker 3: know you said it, you know Sidney Crosby. Obviously, for
- 5:02Speaker 3: Team Canada this is a huge blow, but even a
- 5:04Speaker 3: bit bigger one if this is long term, especially for
- 5:08Speaker 3: the Pittsburgh Pingers, because you're seeing the season they're having
- 5:10Speaker 3: and they're in the mix to you know, to be
- 5:13Speaker 3: in a playoff spot. So if they lose him, that
- 5:14Speaker 3: would be they'd be disastrous. So let's just hope that
- 5:19Speaker 3: sid is okay and then he's able to play next game,
- 5:21Speaker 3: because I think we all want to make sure we
- 5:24Speaker 3: want we want to see We want to see Sidney
- 5:25Speaker 3: Crosby playing in the Olympics.
- 5:28Speaker 1: One hundred percent. You want to see the best players
- 5:29Speaker 1: out there, especially sit at the age of thirty eight.
- 5:31Speaker 1: How valuable he can be for this team. This is
- 5:33Speaker 1: not just a guy who's bringing talent, intangibles and leadership.
- 5:36Speaker 1: He's key to have on the ice. How about the
- 5:38Speaker 1: Slovak attack, that's right, pretermer predictions. Talk with teams that
- 5:41Speaker 1: could be surprising, maybe in Germany, maybe a Switzerland, Slovakia
- 5:44Speaker 1: and your right. Slovkowski carries his team to a first
- 5:47Speaker 1: round by six points in three games, highest total in
- 5:49Speaker 1: the prelim round for a non Canadian. Kames Winger was
- 5:52Speaker 1: MVP of the twenty twenty two to ternament age seventeen,
- 5:56Speaker 1: and it is the prelim round. Ten goals in ten
- 5:59Speaker 1: career Olympic games, tying Slovakia jim Miroslav Shatan for the
- 6:02Speaker 1: second eyed goals toll in Slovak history. Only Marion Josa
- 6:06Speaker 1: has more fourteen goals in nineteen games, as he becomes
- 6:09Speaker 1: the fourth player Olympic history to score ten goals before
- 6:11Speaker 1: turing twenty two and the first to do so since
- 6:14Speaker 1: nineteen forty eight. This is awfully impressive with the slow
- 6:16Speaker 1: backs have done specifically, Nate, how about Slovkovski.
- 6:20Speaker 3: Yeah, to touch on him first, you know, I got
- 6:22Speaker 3: to cover him in a couple of games, you know,
- 6:25Speaker 3: with the Montreal Canadians in the New Year, and you know,
- 6:28Speaker 3: I got to see it firsthand. And he really is
- 6:31Speaker 3: I think, probably the biggest X factor on that team
- 6:34Speaker 3: in Montreal because you I mean, you have kaw Field
- 6:37Speaker 3: and Suzuki and all these guys, but the way that
- 6:40Speaker 3: Urias Slevkovski's able to change a game in different different ways,
- 6:45Speaker 3: whether it's physically skating, big hit in front of the net,
- 6:48Speaker 3: he's just I almost called him like he's like Hercules.
- 6:51Speaker 3: He just he's figuring out his strength right now. He
- 6:54Speaker 3: doesn't know how strong he is or how good he is,
- 6:56Speaker 3: but he's starting to figure it out.
- 6:57Speaker 2: And you're seeing that right now.
- 6:59Speaker 3: You're seeing the Montreal now you're seeing it with Team
- 7:01Speaker 3: Slovakia and how he's you know, he's leading this team.
- 7:04Speaker 3: I mean, yeah, it's Thomas Tatar, my old my old
- 7:07Speaker 3: uh yes, teammate as a captain. But but I would
- 7:10Speaker 3: say that this is your Isla Coosti's team. He's he's
- 7:13Speaker 3: turned to the captain this team and what they're doing
- 7:15Speaker 3: in this tournament, and you can now you can add
- 7:18Speaker 3: you know, uh dal Boardborski too to that that mix
- 7:21Speaker 3: and how he's playing for Slovakia. So it's awesome to see.
- 7:24Speaker 3: It's great for the Olympics and uh not an easy
- 7:28Speaker 3: out if you're playing Team Slovakia.
- 7:29Speaker 1: You're right about that. Divorski's six point of the tournament
- 7:32Speaker 1: in the quarter final win over Germany, passing Alex Ovechkins,
- 7:35Speaker 1: Simmy Vansam and oly Mata most points been in NHL
- 7:38Speaker 1: rookie and an Olympic tournament. So he certainly has been fantastic.
- 7:41Speaker 1: So props the Slovaks and what they've been able to accomplish.
- 7:44Speaker 1: Again these best on best, ivern't know what's gonna happen
- 7:46Speaker 1: in terms of which players are gonna be able to
- 7:47Speaker 1: step up. Slovaks have been impressive and as far as
- 7:50Speaker 1: you wrap up the prelim round again it's the first
- 7:52Speaker 1: best on best Olympic hockey tournament in twelve years. Can
- 7:55Speaker 1: of the US dominant. We saw that McDavid nine points
- 7:58Speaker 1: in three games. I shot at breaking the modern points
- 8:00Speaker 1: record for a single Olympic tournament Seloni and Saku Koivu
- 8:03Speaker 1: eleven points pace. Crosby becomes the all time leader in
- 8:06Speaker 1: career points in winter Olympic tournaments. He passes jer mcginless fourteen,
- 8:10Speaker 1: Marie Fileepulam passing Haley Wickenheiser's to on the all time
- 8:13Speaker 1: women's Olympic gold record, and Hillary Knight setting a new
- 8:16Speaker 1: record for career Olympic points by American woman. But the
- 8:19Speaker 1: guy that I think has been great nat Is Macklin.
- 8:21Speaker 1: Celebrady first NHL players scoring a penalty shot in the Olympics,
- 8:24Speaker 1: broke the record most goals by a teenager in the
- 8:26Speaker 1: Olympic tournament with NHL players Return of the Mac. This
- 8:29Speaker 1: kid's been. It's almost lappable. Now there's any debate whether
- 8:32Speaker 1: or not celebrating should be on the team, He's been
- 8:34Speaker 1: on the Canada's best players.
- 8:35Speaker 3: I can't argue with you. And I was sick of
- 8:37Speaker 3: the same thing. I was just kind of trying to
- 8:39Speaker 3: put in perspective for people like he could play.
- 8:41Speaker 2: He could have played on the world junior team, you know.
- 8:43Speaker 3: He there's just so many different things that he could
- 8:45Speaker 3: be doing right now at nineteen years old, and you're
- 8:48Speaker 3: seeing what he's doing. And I think that's the most
- 8:50Speaker 3: impressive thing because he's playing with Connor McDavid. Yes, granted,
- 8:53Speaker 3: everyone's gonna think, Okay, he's playing with Connor McDavid, he
- 8:56Speaker 3: should be scoring goals, he should be playing great. But
- 8:58Speaker 3: at the same time, it's not easy to play with
- 9:00Speaker 3: Connor McDavid. You're only nineteen years old, you're coming from
- 9:03Speaker 3: San Jose, you expect you're playing on the line with
- 9:06Speaker 3: McDavid and now you're being expected to produce.
- 9:08Speaker 2: But he's doing that and he's having fun doing it
- 9:11Speaker 2: and he's excelling.
- 9:12Speaker 3: You're seeing how much Connor wants to play with him,
- 9:14Speaker 3: how every guy in the team wants to play with him,
- 9:16Speaker 3: And I just think that's the most impressive part. Is
- 9:19Speaker 3: the poise and how he's playing, and how he's almost
- 9:22Speaker 3: adapted his game a little bit too. He's usually playing center,
- 9:25Speaker 3: now he's playing wing, and he's had to adapt his
- 9:27Speaker 3: game a little bit to play with Connor McDavid. And
- 9:29Speaker 3: only guys that are veterans and guys that have years
- 9:31Speaker 3: under the belt are able to do such things. So
- 9:34Speaker 3: I think, I mean, we're seeing how much of a
- 9:36Speaker 3: generational talent he is, and it's just so impressive to watch.
- 9:38Speaker 1: You're right being able to adjust as obviously real talented,
- 9:41Speaker 1: especially is he's playing with those players not intimidated and
- 9:44Speaker 1: the moment is not too big for him. One more
- 9:46Speaker 1: thought on the US, and this is the Swayman whiff
- 9:49Speaker 1: us Denmark. Diplomatic relations are an all time low between
- 9:52Speaker 1: these two countries, the Danes and the first put up
- 9:54Speaker 1: two to one against American things to a Nicholas Jensen
- 9:56Speaker 1: shot from Centa Rice and the cop passed way when
- 9:59Speaker 1: the goal actually caused organizers to change the board colors
- 10:02Speaker 1: at Centa Rice. We can only assume the party with
- 10:04Speaker 1: some swing in Denmark during intermission, Tom Say bounces back
- 10:07Speaker 1: to win that game sixth three. They took care of
- 10:08Speaker 1: the business against the Germans five to one, again the
- 10:10Speaker 1: number two seed, but obviously that you're pulling for USA.
- 10:13Speaker 1: Was that a wake up call? You think that kind
- 10:14Speaker 1: of a goal?
- 10:16Speaker 2: I think it was.
- 10:17Speaker 3: And I love Jeremy Swamy's from my from my hometown Acrede, Alaska,
- 10:20Speaker 3: and I felt for him on that one big time.
- 10:22Speaker 3: You know, he had a tough one, But uh, I
- 10:25Speaker 3: think it was and I think that game, especially for
- 10:28Speaker 3: the Americans, and even the game, yeah, the game against
- 10:30Speaker 3: the Germans, I thought that for the first time, uh
- 10:33Speaker 3: in the tournament, they really kind of had urgency and
- 10:36Speaker 3: played with more physicality, maybe a little more hate than anything.
- 10:39Speaker 3: That It feel like they kind of had to manufacturer
- 10:41Speaker 3: more than the Canadians did. And I thought after that
- 10:44Speaker 3: game they really kind of started. You could see them
- 10:46Speaker 3: playing their game. But uh, to your to your point
- 10:49Speaker 3: about the you know, the pucking to Jeremy swaming going by,
- 10:52Speaker 3: I mean I heard that they had to, like you said,
- 10:54Speaker 3: they changed the change the color of the of the
- 10:57Speaker 3: I guess right behind the dasher so he could see
- 11:00Speaker 3: the pucker.
- 11:00Speaker 2: All the goalies could see the puck. So uh.
- 11:03Speaker 3: For me though, the Americans, I think the biggest concern
- 11:05Speaker 3: is is they have to bring their physicality and you know,
- 11:09Speaker 3: I guess that hate that the Canadians have manufactured you've
- 11:13Speaker 3: seen throughout the tournament. So I think that's gonna be
- 11:16Speaker 3: It's gonna be a huge test for the Americans.
- 11:18Speaker 1: Yeah, there's no doubt about it. It should be interesting as
- 11:20Speaker 1: far as what happens the rest of the way and
- 11:22Speaker 1: as far as celebrainy won goal to assists against the checks.
- 11:25Speaker 1: He was great. Nate, what are your thoughts as far
- 11:27Speaker 1: as regards to you know, honestly, it's gonna be exciting
- 11:29Speaker 1: the rest of the way, but the rest of quaterfalla matches.
- 11:31Speaker 1: What did you say?
- 11:32Speaker 3: Yeah, we have to talk about this US Sweden game,
- 11:34Speaker 3: which was pretty incredible. I thought, for the most part,
- 11:37Speaker 3: US really took it to Sweden. I thought defensively, I
- 11:42Speaker 3: really was really impressively US played because Sweden, you know,
- 11:46Speaker 3: they had their chances.
- 11:47Speaker 2: But I thought for the most part, it was all.
- 11:49Speaker 3: Won and done, and if they had their chances, Hella
- 11:51Speaker 3: Buck you know, he was tested a couple of times,
- 11:53Speaker 3: but I didn't think it was overly. You know, there
- 11:57Speaker 3: wasn't There wasn't chance after chance where he had to
- 11:59Speaker 3: be unbelievable in this game. And I thought for the
- 12:02Speaker 3: most part, US everyone from the Dion out, I thought
- 12:06Speaker 3: the depth came up big. You know, Dylan Larkin gets
- 12:08Speaker 3: a really big goal today. I think for him getting
- 12:11Speaker 3: a goal like that is a big difference maker for
- 12:14Speaker 3: this US team. I thought guys like Miller Trocheck, you know,
- 12:17Speaker 3: they you know, Trocheck was winning draws a key moments
- 12:20Speaker 3: of the game, especially in overtime. He was out there.
- 12:22Speaker 3: I thought that was important. So when you're seeing guys
- 12:25Speaker 3: like that, you know, contribute the way they did and
- 12:28Speaker 3: they win a you know, kind of a grind game.
- 12:31Speaker 3: You know, Sweden ties it up late, but I thought
- 12:35Speaker 3: that wasn't you know, there really wasn't much after that,
- 12:38Speaker 3: and then in overtime, I thought the US really kind
- 12:41Speaker 3: of controlled the whole OT And you know, I look
- 12:44Speaker 3: back at four Nations and you look at the US team,
- 12:47Speaker 3: uh and what they look like last year, and now
- 12:50Speaker 3: you look at them this year, and the biggest difference
- 12:53Speaker 3: I think is Quinn Hughes and I think with him
- 12:57Speaker 3: on their team.
- 12:58Speaker 2: He is that X factor.
- 13:00Speaker 3: He is that magic man that Mike Sullivan talks about
- 13:03Speaker 3: and that he talked about this tournament that he does
- 13:05Speaker 3: create magic, and that's what he did in the OT goal.
- 13:07Speaker 3: It's just you know, he you know, we looked at
- 13:10Speaker 3: it alan he you know, he's got twenty seven minutes
- 13:13Speaker 3: of ice time in this game, and the next closest
- 13:16Speaker 3: defenseman is eight minutes less than him, and the next
- 13:20Speaker 3: closest player and minutes is is is a forward and
- 13:24Speaker 3: not even a defenseman. So that just goes to show
- 13:27Speaker 3: you how much and how important Quinn you Hughes is
- 13:30Speaker 3: to this you at Team USA, and the difference that
- 13:34Speaker 3: he makes and the difference he made in this game.
- 13:37Speaker 3: And I think that's what probably makes the Team US
- 13:39Speaker 3: say a lot more dangerous this year than they did
- 13:41Speaker 3: at for Nations, just because of Quinn Hughes and and
- 13:44Speaker 3: the and just the overall you know, how he he
- 13:48Speaker 3: can put his he can put his footprint on the
- 13:51Speaker 3: game and in so many different ways. So I think
- 13:54Speaker 3: there's a lot of a lot of good things to
- 13:55Speaker 3: take away from this game for the US. I think
- 13:57Speaker 3: whenever your battle tested like this moving forward to the
- 14:00Speaker 3: tournament's only going to help you. So for Team USA
- 14:03Speaker 3: moving forward, this is a huge win. And you know,
- 14:06Speaker 3: now they take on Slovakia, which is not going to
- 14:09Speaker 3: be an easy an easy task at all with the
- 14:12Speaker 3: way they're playing. So this is great and we can
- 14:15Speaker 3: hopefully get a still US Canada clash is what we
- 14:19Speaker 3: all want to see. So we're definitely on that collision
- 14:22Speaker 3: course because that is just what we need for the game.
- 14:26Speaker 1: So we're finally in the Metal round of the Men's
- 14:27Speaker 1: Olympic Hockey Tournament. Jason Numurs on site. His report the
- 14:30Speaker 1: quarter final match was as well as a look at
- 14:32Speaker 1: the end of the tournament. Take it away, JD.
- 14:35Speaker 4: All Right, I feel like I'm Matt Damon in the
- 14:37Speaker 4: Martian right now. This is my blog to everybody. I
- 14:42Speaker 4: am still alive in Milan. It's a video diary. I'm
- 14:45Speaker 4: drinking a Campari soda as well as a dry gin.
- 14:51Speaker 4: So we're having ourselves a good old time here in Milan.
- 14:54Speaker 4: Long ass day, but what a day of hockey. We
- 14:57Speaker 4: started off first with Slovakia just a dominating win over Germany.
- 15:04Speaker 4: I think, you know, I think they just suffocated Germany
- 15:08Speaker 4: at every single level. Dalboard Divorski points in all four
- 15:13Speaker 4: games of the tournament. Right now, he's the youngest Slovakian
- 15:15Speaker 4: age twenty, that's his age to ever record a four
- 15:18Speaker 4: point four game points streak at the Olympics with NHL participation,
- 15:22Speaker 4: mind you, but dal Board Devorski is showing the Saint
- 15:24Speaker 4: Louis fans that what his ceiling is capable of, and
- 15:27Speaker 4: this team the belief they have in each other, what
- 15:30Speaker 4: they think of themselves, and they probably don't have the
- 15:33Speaker 4: deepest NHL roster like NHL guys in NHL games, but man,
- 15:37Speaker 4: they play well together. There's some guys that I really
- 15:39Speaker 4: want to highlight and tell fans to really keep an
- 15:42Speaker 4: eye on his.
- 15:42Speaker 5: Martin Jurnett the defenseman.
- 15:44Speaker 4: Fantastic team and had some experience in North America, but
- 15:48Speaker 4: plays out I think in Russia right now and he's
- 15:51Speaker 4: just been fantastic for you know, Julava the goaltender has
- 15:54Speaker 4: been great. But yeah, Germany, probably other than Czechia before
- 15:58Speaker 4: this last game against Canada, was probably the most disappointing
- 16:00Speaker 4: team at the tournament. Just couldn't find their legs at
- 16:03Speaker 4: any kind of at any point of this game. And
- 16:06Speaker 4: the one thing you know between them in Slovakia before
- 16:09Speaker 4: I wrap it up, is that they're.
- 16:13Speaker 5: There.
- 16:15Speaker 4: Their group of European players weren't as good as you know, Slovakia,
- 16:21Speaker 4: so Slovakia was able to kind of just suffocate them
- 16:23Speaker 4: with that. So continuing on after Slovakia, which we kind
- 16:28Speaker 4: of I thought there was potential upset capabilities there, Slovakia
- 16:33Speaker 4: take care as the business we get into the finn
- 16:36Speaker 4: It wasn't the Finland game because the Filand game was
- 16:38Speaker 4: at Row. It was the Canada Czechia game. The we'll
- 16:41Speaker 4: call this the appetizer of the night. This game was
- 16:44Speaker 4: fucking unbelievable, the atmosphere, uh, the stakes of it. You know,
- 16:51Speaker 4: Sidney Crosby goes down with an apparent knee injury. It
- 16:53Speaker 4: seemed like the tough sledding. You know, Cechia kind of
- 16:58Speaker 4: hangs on early. They take care of the onslaught macclin
- 17:02Speaker 4: Celabrini scores a goal for just an absolute incredible pass.
- 17:06Speaker 4: You know, McDavid eyes in the back of his head
- 17:09Speaker 4: and he's got now after this game, I believe, nine
- 17:12Speaker 4: points in four games. He passes up Guinny Malkin, who
- 17:15Speaker 4: had six points in seven games in two and six
- 17:17Speaker 4: with Russia, for the most points by a teenager in
- 17:19Speaker 4: a single Olympic tournament with NHL players. Again, mind you,
- 17:23Speaker 4: but you know, Connor McDavid gets his eleventh point of
- 17:27Speaker 4: the twenty twenty six Winter Olympics, tys Tim Muslani and
- 17:30Speaker 4: Saku Koivu, most points in a single Olympics involving NHL players.
- 17:35Speaker 4: So like, what these two guys are doing, Like Maclin's
- 17:38Speaker 4: on a different level, man, Like, I don't understand it
- 17:42Speaker 4: watching this kid play the motor on him, motor in
- 17:46Speaker 4: what's your prize for flight. But this kid man, and
- 17:51Speaker 4: you listen to guys talk about him, and we've had
- 17:53Speaker 4: the pleasure of interviewing, you know, quite a few guys,
- 17:56Speaker 4: and we'll get to our interview in a little bit
- 17:59Speaker 4: when I kind of round out the game. But they
- 18:01Speaker 4: speak so highly of this kid. It's like they light
- 18:04Speaker 4: up when they talk about him. And we got to
- 18:06Speaker 4: speak to him after the game as well. I mean,
- 18:08Speaker 4: just what he said about Sidney Krasse, he is just
- 18:10Speaker 4: amazing saying that, Hey, in these big moments, typically Sidney
- 18:13Speaker 4: Crosby would be the guy to stand up. He's the
- 18:15Speaker 4: one we looked to in the tough moments. He wasn't there,
- 18:18Speaker 4: so we had to step up in his absence. Just
- 18:21Speaker 4: just amazing stuff. So but Mitch Marner, you know, CHECKI
- 18:25Speaker 4: has scores the goal ahead goal when they had six
- 18:27Speaker 4: guys on the ice which was Banana lands, and we
- 18:31Speaker 4: didn't even no one noticed it. It was like so
- 18:32Speaker 4: subtle that nobody noticed it until they scored, because I
- 18:36Speaker 4: was like, you know, I'm in there, and I'm like,
- 18:39Speaker 4: I'm like Suzuki and Dowd. He played that three on
- 18:42Speaker 4: two horribly and I'm like, how did they get three
- 18:44Speaker 4: guys up there so quick. It seemed like Hurdle blocked
- 18:46Speaker 4: a shot and they're off to the races. But it
- 18:49Speaker 4: was just this nuts thing. So they end up, you know,
- 18:52Speaker 4: tying it up. Nick Suzuki gets pushed up to the
- 18:55Speaker 4: second line, and I think he showed what he's actually
- 18:58Speaker 4: capable of. He's kind of been under a little bit
- 19:00Speaker 4: of scrutiny during these Olympics, hasn't really showed out. He
- 19:03Speaker 4: hasn't found a role, and I think he stepped up
- 19:05Speaker 4: in the absence Acrossby makes a great tip play. We
- 19:08Speaker 4: spoke to him as well, and just very candid with
- 19:11Speaker 4: his the way he spoke. But yeah, you know, Mitch
- 19:15Speaker 4: Marner does what Mitch Marner does when he's not with
- 19:17Speaker 4: the Toronto Maple Leafs. Scores clutch goals, scored an absolute
- 19:22Speaker 4: beauty off a drop pass for Macklin, celebrity's third point
- 19:25Speaker 4: of the night, and just what a fucking finish. This
- 19:28Speaker 4: was just on the backhand. He does it the same
- 19:30Speaker 4: way at Four Nations. He's so clutching these big moments.
- 19:33Speaker 4: He bleeds the maple leave, he bleeds maple syrup. And
- 19:37Speaker 4: we had the pleasure of talking to him. So here's
- 19:38Speaker 4: the sound from our interview with Mitch Marner.
- 19:42Speaker 6: Look, I was able to put in a spot in
- 19:44Speaker 6: a place that I could get it back, and then
- 19:45Speaker 6: from there just trying to get it on office to
- 19:47Speaker 6: quickly far side and lucky if it worked.
- 19:49Speaker 4: Talk how big you know Nick Suzuki was tonight stepping
- 19:52Speaker 4: up into that role with with the absence.
- 19:53Speaker 7: He said, yeah, massive hum.
- 19:55Speaker 6: Obviously it's a big hold of fill and he did
- 19:57Speaker 6: a great job of it. Not just because he scored
- 19:59Speaker 6: that massive goal obviously, but he's a very smart.
- 20:02Speaker 7: Two way player.
- 20:02Speaker 6: He makes great plays, he's got great speed coming the ice,
- 20:04Speaker 6: and yeah, you see why he gets so much love
- 20:06Speaker 6: in Montreal. So yeah, you know, we'll see what happens here.
- 20:09Speaker 6: But if it's like that going forward, just keep talking,
- 20:11Speaker 6: trying to build our chemistry and make sure doing the
- 20:14Speaker 6: right things.
- 20:14Speaker 8: I want to ask you about Maclann Celebrany, I mean
- 20:16Speaker 8: kids leading the tournament and goals. At this point, Sidney
- 20:19Speaker 8: goes down, he gets elevated to that top power play.
- 20:21Speaker 8: It just never seems like a moment's ever too big
- 20:23Speaker 8: for him. Can you speak to the poise of maclind
- 20:26Speaker 8: celebraty in his first Olympics here.
- 20:27Speaker 6: Yeah, he's got great poise, he's uh, you know, he's
- 20:29Speaker 6: still a kid. It's it's great to have him around.
- 20:31Speaker 6: And he's brings so much energy and so much fun
- 20:33Speaker 6: and makes you really bring out your kid and your
- 20:35Speaker 6: younger self. So yeah, it's been a lot of fun
- 20:37Speaker 6: to have him around. Like you said, he's not too
- 20:39Speaker 6: he's not afraid of the big moments and you know
- 20:40Speaker 6: he wants him so something you love to see out
- 20:42Speaker 6: of a guy his age.
- 20:44Speaker 4: Just talk quickly about Bennington, you know, coming in in
- 20:46Speaker 4: the saves he makes for this team night in, night out.
- 20:48Speaker 6: Yeah, massive, massive saves are in the third massive breakaway
- 20:53Speaker 6: save on Ny Cash there to keep that game where
- 20:54Speaker 6: it was, and from that moment on a couple of
- 20:56Speaker 6: big overtime saves as well to keep it just calm
- 20:58Speaker 6: and cool and collected.
- 20:59Speaker 7: So he's been big.
- 21:01Speaker 6: He's been massive for us and then that and he
- 21:03Speaker 6: does so many small things, that's all. When the buckets rimmed,
- 21:05Speaker 6: he can handle that pluck make quick plays out of it.
- 21:07Speaker 6: So he's been amazing for us.
- 21:08Speaker 7: Thanks bench appreciate the time.
- 21:10Speaker 4: Good up, Thanks boys, talk by your rest of way,
- 21:12Speaker 4: just listening to him talk and how locked in this
- 21:15Speaker 4: team is.
- 21:16Speaker 5: You know, it's crazy.
- 21:16Speaker 4: We we have the pleasure of being in the media
- 21:18Speaker 4: zone before I cap this off, and so we get
- 21:21Speaker 4: to see all the.
- 21:21Speaker 5: Players walk by.
- 21:22Speaker 4: They walk by us in a row and you know,
- 21:25Speaker 4: I get to give my little fist pumps and feel
- 21:26Speaker 4: like I'm a super fan tall the guys that I know.
- 21:29Speaker 5: And you know, it's been nice.
- 21:30Speaker 4: Guys have been really you know, great and cordial with
- 21:33Speaker 4: me and and so it's been fun to you know,
- 21:35Speaker 4: kind of see the faces and see the looks on
- 21:38Speaker 4: their eyes. And every Canada guy was like a deep
- 21:41Speaker 4: exhale when they walked by the line, like they kind
- 21:44Speaker 4: of knew that, you know, there is a moment that
- 21:47Speaker 4: the doubt crept in just just a hair on this
- 21:50Speaker 4: Canadian team, and they find a way out of it.
- 21:53Speaker 4: So now we get to the finish game, which was
- 21:55Speaker 4: at the Row Arena, uh and the Rod Milano Ice
- 21:59Speaker 4: Skating Arena. So it's there we ended up. I ended
- 22:02Speaker 4: up following that online. I mean Switzerland just this kind
- 22:05Speaker 4: of the other Cinderella story of the tournament. They scored
- 22:08Speaker 4: two quick goals and you know, need a ryder. They
- 22:11Speaker 4: end up you know, no one's been able to figure
- 22:13Speaker 4: out Leonardo Genoni, what happens Miro Hayskinen and this team
- 22:17Speaker 4: figures it out, and who other but our tury fucking
- 22:19Speaker 4: likeking in steps up first overtime goaling Olympic game with
- 22:23Speaker 4: NHL players. It's it's not and it's listen, it's not
- 22:26Speaker 4: the first time he's done this. He scored ot winner
- 22:29Speaker 4: for both the Canadians and twenty twenty one are heavy tant.
- 22:32Speaker 4: He scored for them, and also the Avalanche advance in
- 22:35Speaker 4: the Stanley Cup finals. So he's got clutch in his veins.
- 22:37Speaker 4: He's our turry clutch Clutchkinen. I'm gonna try to get
- 22:41Speaker 4: that move in, but that probably won't happen. So they
- 22:44Speaker 4: advance to set up the eventual if Sweden in USA.
- 22:49Speaker 5: You know however that went.
- 22:51Speaker 4: But that's Canada versus Finland now, so that's the next matchup,
- 22:54Speaker 4: and then we get to the final on this USA
- 22:57Speaker 4: Sweden game. Yeah, not since nineteen sixty has USA beat
- 23:04Speaker 4: Sweet in an Olympic style hockey game. The closest they
- 23:08Speaker 4: got was a couple of ties, was a tie in
- 23:11Speaker 4: you know, miracle on ice in nineteen eighty, so they
- 23:13Speaker 4: end up exercising the demons. And you know what was
- 23:16Speaker 4: impressive about USA as I get through it is they
- 23:20Speaker 4: were so good. You know, they've been very good offensively
- 23:23Speaker 4: and playing kind of a running gun style. They played
- 23:25Speaker 4: a very adaptive defensive style game tonight and they did
- 23:28Speaker 4: just absolutely great work on the back and I thought
- 23:31Speaker 4: McAvoy was a beast tonight.
- 23:33Speaker 5: Dylan Larkin was great. GT.
- 23:35Speaker 4: Miller some really good penalty kills, and they kind of
- 23:37Speaker 4: just lulled Sweeten to sleep. I mean, I think Sam
- 23:40Speaker 4: Halam might go down as one of the watching worst
- 23:43Speaker 4: coaching performances in an Olympics. He initially didn't play fucking
- 23:49Speaker 4: Philip Forsburg to start the tournament, and then started playing
- 23:52Speaker 4: him like fifteen minutes a game, and then he benches
- 23:54Speaker 4: Jasper Bratt, and I heard through the grapevine being boots
- 23:59Speaker 4: on the ground that he had no idea that he
- 24:00Speaker 4: was scratched for that last game before tonight. He came
- 24:03Speaker 4: in the room and his name wasn't on the board,
- 24:06Speaker 4: and basically he had to sit that game out against France,
- 24:10Speaker 4: not France. I can't forget what they played. In my
- 24:12Speaker 4: Mind's a fucking blender, but he ended up getting in
- 24:15Speaker 4: this game, doesn't play the whole game, puts him into
- 24:18Speaker 4: the third, and then Sweden kind of starts humming. They
- 24:20Speaker 4: were kind of a knee mick until then, but probably
- 24:22Speaker 4: the best goaltending performance from Jacob Markstrom and Connor Hellbook
- 24:26Speaker 4: that I've seen at this tournament.
- 24:28Speaker 5: And we get to overtime and man.
- 24:31Speaker 4: Sweden ties it up with ninety seconds left. We're sitting
- 24:34Speaker 4: around like is this fucking gonna happen? Like are they
- 24:36Speaker 4: really going to pull this off? And USA is gonna
- 24:39Speaker 4: get their heart ripped out? And I'm kind of in
- 24:41Speaker 4: the corner being like Canada's in, you know, do I really?
- 24:43Speaker 4: But I know Austin Matthews and o' Clayton Keller, so
- 24:46Speaker 4: I'm like, I want to see them win this game.
- 24:48Speaker 4: And Quinn Hughes puts on just like what a game,
- 24:51Speaker 4: what a tournament he's had. If they had him at
- 24:53Speaker 4: four Nations, I venture to say that I think Canada
- 25:00Speaker 4: might have been in trouble. So I'm a little interested
- 25:02Speaker 4: to see if they both make it to the final,
- 25:04Speaker 4: how this works with Quinn there, But he is the
- 25:05Speaker 4: puck and a stick all game.
- 25:07Speaker 5: He does his whirling dervish shit.
- 25:09Speaker 4: And absolutely buries that goal in overtime. And we talked
- 25:13Speaker 4: to a lot of guys after that game. They seem
- 25:14Speaker 4: very confident. Every guy we talked to, Charlie McAvoy said
- 25:19Speaker 4: that he's dubbed the X factor by the team and
- 25:21Speaker 4: they all call him that. But we had a pleasure
- 25:23Speaker 4: of talking to Quinn Hughes and he talked about his
- 25:27Speaker 4: goal and about you know what this team has kind
- 25:29Speaker 4: of done at this tournament so far. So here's the
- 25:31Speaker 4: sound with Quinn Hughes.
- 25:32Speaker 9: You know, wanted to take it to my forehand and
- 25:34Speaker 9: I got the defender moving that way and I was
- 25:36Speaker 9: able to get a shot off. So something I work
- 25:39Speaker 9: on a lot and just trying to attack and get
- 25:41Speaker 9: my shehol off.
- 25:42Speaker 4: How proud are you be this team to adapt? You know,
- 25:45Speaker 4: you guys played some games winning my large margins and
- 25:47Speaker 4: now you had to play a tight defensive game.
- 25:50Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 25:50Speaker 9: I mean, I think that we're a competitive group and
- 25:52Speaker 9: guys have won here and so they know how to win.
- 25:54Speaker 9: And I mean it's tough to see them score at
- 25:57Speaker 9: ninety secondstuff, but we're resilient and I think he saw us,
- 26:02Speaker 9: you know, kind of with that, no regret mantra on
- 26:05Speaker 9: overtime and try to attack the game.
- 26:07Speaker 8: How does this game compare to some of the other
- 26:08Speaker 8: games that you guys have played in this tournament?
- 26:10Speaker 7: This one was neither team was really given an inch there.
- 26:13Speaker 9: Kind of hard to compare just because I mean, that
- 26:16Speaker 9: team's one of the best in the world and can
- 26:18Speaker 9: beat anyone on a given night. So haven't really played
- 26:21Speaker 9: a opponent like that before. But it's gonna be good
- 26:23Speaker 9: going forward.
- 26:24Speaker 7: Quinn, congratulations, good luck going forward.
- 26:26Speaker 9: Thank you.
- 26:27Speaker 5: Thanks. Yeah, so that was Quinn the X factor.
- 26:32Speaker 4: A couple points tonight again and then we're off to
- 26:35Speaker 4: the semi finals and it is going to be an
- 26:37Speaker 4: absolute banger Finland Canada.
- 26:39Speaker 5: I think the matchup of the tournament.
- 26:41Speaker 4: You know, you lose Crosby, I think for at least
- 26:43Speaker 4: this game. Hopefully Morrissey can make it in and Bennett
- 26:46Speaker 4: as well. You're gonna have Bennett be down the middle.
- 26:49Speaker 4: We'll see what they do with that forward group. But
- 26:51Speaker 4: Nick Suzuki goes up a line. You know, I thought
- 26:54Speaker 4: RVET did some good stuff, but this finished team, man,
- 26:56Speaker 4: I this is a good hockey team with a good
- 26:58Speaker 4: goaltender in Yuci Sero, So this is going to be
- 27:02Speaker 4: the marquee matchup. I think USA Slovaka it kind of
- 27:04Speaker 4: plays out that maybe more high scoring game than the
- 27:08Speaker 4: Swedish game. I think it's gonna be very high octane,
- 27:11Speaker 4: fast paced, but I don't think Slovakia can hang with
- 27:16Speaker 4: USA over time. I just think this team's too deep
- 27:18Speaker 4: on the back end. You know, Slovakia hasn't faced a
- 27:21Speaker 4: team in USA that has a decore that moves like that,
- 27:25Speaker 4: and I think that's the biggest thing with this tournament
- 27:28Speaker 4: is like, you know, we talked to Dylan Larkin. He
- 27:30Speaker 4: was like, this this is our fucking decor. Is like,
- 27:34Speaker 4: it's so fun playing with these guys because they can
- 27:36Speaker 4: skate the puck out of trouble, they can move pucks,
- 27:38Speaker 4: and they just they're able to hang on a bucks
- 27:40Speaker 4: And I just don't think Slovakia is gonna be able
- 27:42Speaker 4: to hang with this. And I think the Kachucks will
- 27:44Speaker 4: take care of Slavkovski. So I really think it's gonna
- 27:46Speaker 4: be tough sledding and it puts together the eventual Canada
- 27:51Speaker 4: USA the two trains are looking to collide and meet.
- 27:56Speaker 4: I think that will be the case. I can't bet
- 27:58Speaker 4: against Canada right now. But you know, the only hiccup
- 28:02Speaker 4: is going to be Finland. But I think USA takes
- 28:03Speaker 4: care of business and they kind of might have an
- 28:06Speaker 4: easier path to the finals. But that is my wrap
- 28:08Speaker 4: up from Milano. Grazzimile and I am going to have
- 28:13Speaker 4: my Negroni pet fervori right before I go to sleep
- 28:15Speaker 4: and have my meganesium. So all of you bitches, we'll
- 28:19Speaker 4: see you next Wednesday.
- 28:20Speaker 2: All right, j do you good stuff?
- 28:21Speaker 1: Come up next? We'll talk to goalies having a fantastic season.
- 28:23Speaker 1: Love the way he can handle the puck. He's obviously
- 28:25Speaker 1: racking up wins right now for Lane Lambert. Joey Decord
- 28:28Speaker 1: of the Seattle Cracker is coming up right after this
- 28:30Speaker 1: on NHL Unscripted. Our next guest was drafted in the
- 28:45Speaker 1: seventh round, one hundred and ninety ninth overall but the
- 28:48Speaker 1: Ottawa Centers in the twenty fifteen NHL Draft. He then
- 28:51Speaker 1: started Arizona State University before fighting a home with the
- 28:54Speaker 1: Seattle Krackener is now the undisputed man in that as
- 28:57Speaker 1: if that was enough, But of the best YouTube channel
- 28:59Speaker 1: of any NHL player, it's Joey Decord Jay Joey going
- 29:03Speaker 1: to see him.
- 29:03Speaker 5: Let's going on.
- 29:04Speaker 2: Yeah, I like that.
- 29:06Speaker 7: I've never had that in my intro before, So I'm
- 29:07Speaker 7: gonna the bar. Is said, it's a new bar.
- 29:10Speaker 1: Prop star mental for putting that together. So first and foremost,
- 29:13Speaker 1: USA wins in the quarterfinal, a very exciting, intense game
- 29:17Speaker 1: against Sweden.
- 29:18Speaker 2: Would you make of it?
- 29:19Speaker 10: I mean, just fun, fun to watch, And you know,
- 29:21Speaker 10: I'm just watching the Olympics, like all the games are
- 29:23Speaker 10: so different and so entertaining in you know, a number
- 29:26Speaker 10: of different ways.
- 29:27Speaker 7: But Quinn Hughes calling his own number. That was a
- 29:30Speaker 7: great goal and just just a fun hockey and to watch,
- 29:33Speaker 7: I'll tell you what.
- 29:34Speaker 10: Like, I don't know if I would want to, you know,
- 29:36Speaker 10: if it were me, like three on three in like
- 29:39Speaker 10: a playoff elimination game like for my team, I'm like,
- 29:43Speaker 10: you know, you want it settled five on five? I
- 29:45Speaker 10: think yes, But man, is it fun to watch, like
- 29:48Speaker 10: ten minutes three on three, Like it's hard not to
- 29:51Speaker 10: not to enjoy watching.
- 29:52Speaker 1: You're right about that. When I started watching, this can't
- 29:54Speaker 1: be right. I said, at this level, you're going three
- 29:57Speaker 1: on three, But it's certainly as ertain. There's no doubt
- 29:59Speaker 1: about that obviously you'd rather be playing in the long joy.
- 30:02Speaker 1: But how has your Olympic break been so far?
- 30:04Speaker 10: Well, yeah, I mean I think you know, anyone would
- 30:07Speaker 10: rather be playing in the Olympics right now.
- 30:08Speaker 7: But I had a great time. I was down in
- 30:11Speaker 7: Scottsdale a little.
- 30:12Speaker 10: Bit, visiting, visiting one of my friends and visiting Arizona State,
- 30:16Speaker 10: and then we checked out the golf tournament there of
- 30:19Speaker 10: the waste management, so that was a blast. And then
- 30:21Speaker 10: popped over to Florida with my girlfriend and her family
- 30:25Speaker 10: and my family at Donna Naples and just enjoyed some
- 30:28Speaker 10: beach and some sun.
- 30:30Speaker 7: So can't complain.
- 30:31Speaker 1: Yeah, I heard a status somebody was saying seven of
- 30:33Speaker 1: the thirty two teams, that's the equivalent of all the
- 30:35Speaker 1: players playing in the Olympics, So for twenty five teams,
- 30:37Speaker 1: basically it's just a few weeks off. So good for
- 30:39Speaker 1: you to get some sun and some rest and do
- 30:41Speaker 1: what you can. You've established yourself as one of the
- 30:43Speaker 1: top American goalies in the NHL. So did you hear
- 30:46Speaker 1: anything from Bill Garon or USA Hockey prior to the Games?
- 30:50Speaker 10: Well, yeah, I went to the orientation camp in August
- 30:55Speaker 10: and that was just an incredible experience. I mean that
- 30:57Speaker 10: was I played in Worlds last year, which was very
- 31:00Speaker 10: cool and we were, you know, fortunate enough to win,
- 31:03Speaker 10: and just an insane, honestly experience. But then, yeah, I
- 31:07Speaker 10: went to the orientation camp, and I mean, America has
- 31:11Speaker 10: such amazing goalies, Like you know, it's going to be
- 31:13Speaker 10: a tall task no matter what, but just to be
- 31:15Speaker 10: invited and included in the mix there was really special
- 31:20Speaker 10: and I'm super grateful for it. And you know, I
- 31:23Speaker 10: was super grateful to be a part of the American
- 31:25Speaker 10: team last year.
- 31:27Speaker 1: Yeah, for years, Canada was thought to be the hotbed
- 31:29Speaker 1: oft golten Ing, right whether it was Patrick Kwahdmark Tampa door.
- 31:31Speaker 1: But now you're right, Usa, Goltening is where it's at
- 31:33Speaker 1: Ella buck Ott and you're swimming among those who are
- 31:35Speaker 1: great and yourself. Your dad is Canadian, your mom is Swiss,
- 31:38Speaker 1: and you thought about competing for either of those teams
- 31:40Speaker 1: in Milan.
- 31:42Speaker 10: Well, I can't technically play for the Swiss team because
- 31:46Speaker 10: the Swiss team actually, for a long time when I
- 31:49Speaker 10: was growing up, like probably from the time I was
- 31:50Speaker 10: seventeen or eighteen until a couple of years ago, was
- 31:54Speaker 10: trying to petition the IHF to get me permission to
- 31:58Speaker 10: play for them. Nice, but the IHF never like allowed it,
- 32:05Speaker 10: so I was never able to play for them.
- 32:08Speaker 7: You have to play play in the country.
- 32:09Speaker 10: For two years, so act the only reason I'm able
- 32:11Speaker 10: to play or eligible to play for Canada or was
- 32:14Speaker 10: eligible to play for Canada was because I played two
- 32:17Speaker 10: years with Ottawa and Bellville.
- 32:19Speaker 7: So if I had never played for.
- 32:21Speaker 10: Ottawa and Belleville, I never would have been eligible for Canada,
- 32:24Speaker 10: even though I have passports to all three countries. So
- 32:28Speaker 10: then there was a little bit of talk last year
- 32:31Speaker 10: about the four Nations. Canada had reached out and we
- 32:35Speaker 10: chatted about it, and ultimately I just decided that I wanted.
- 32:38Speaker 7: To play for the United States if they wanted me.
- 32:41Speaker 10: I was born and raised in Boston, lived almost my
- 32:44Speaker 10: whole life in America.
- 32:45Speaker 7: I was like, I wouldn't feel.
- 32:46Speaker 10: Right I playing for Canada and I wanted to represent
- 32:49Speaker 10: America if I got the chance.
- 32:50Speaker 7: And then they invited me to play at the World Championships.
- 32:53Speaker 7: So an incredible feeling and moment to get to put
- 32:56Speaker 7: on the USA sweater.
- 32:57Speaker 1: Absolutely, I did not know that as far as having
- 32:59Speaker 1: to play in Canada, shout out to Belleville, because I
- 33:01Speaker 1: grew up in Kingston, So Belleville, Sam and I was
- 33:04Speaker 1: used to love them all in bell Bell There's a good,
- 33:05Speaker 1: good drive away there from Kingston. The Foura one do.
- 33:08Speaker 1: You arrived at Arizona State not long after the program
- 33:10Speaker 1: officially moved to D one. What was that recruiting process
- 33:14Speaker 1: like for you, I'm not sure that issue was at
- 33:15Speaker 1: the top of your list being a Boston guy.
- 33:18Speaker 10: Honestly, it was a unique experience because growing up, I mean,
- 33:23Speaker 10: that was never a team. That was never an option
- 33:24Speaker 10: growing up, And like you said, being a Boston kid,
- 33:28Speaker 10: you just want to play for one of the Boston
- 33:30Speaker 10: schools BCBU, Harvard, Northeastern, and like even if you go
- 33:34Speaker 10: in just anywhere in Hockey East, you an h main
- 33:36Speaker 10: like Providence. They're all such incredibly historic and famous college
- 33:43Speaker 10: hockey programs in the Northeast, and I think just growing
- 33:46Speaker 10: up you always wanted to play for one of those teams.
- 33:48Speaker 10: I mean, my dream school growing up was BC, but
- 33:53Speaker 10: I honestly did not have much college interest. I had
- 33:56Speaker 10: a lot of people kicking tires, but no one willing
- 33:58Speaker 10: to offer me a scholarship, and coach Powers and ASU.
- 34:00Speaker 10: They came in and they were like, hey, we're a
- 34:02Speaker 10: big fan of you and we'd love to have you
- 34:04Speaker 10: out to Arizona State. And I was a bit skeptical
- 34:07Speaker 10: at first. Honestly, I I really wanted to go somewhere
- 34:11Speaker 10: in Boston and close to home. But when you step
- 34:14Speaker 10: foot on that campus, you'd have the plane, it's middle
- 34:16Speaker 10: of winter and it's beautiful outside, and it's you know,
- 34:21Speaker 10: that's just one part of.
- 34:21Speaker 7: It, but it's a huge part of it.
- 34:23Speaker 10: And I think what really sold me on ASU was
- 34:27Speaker 10: their mantras be the tradition, and I thought that was
- 34:30Speaker 10: so cool, right.
- 34:31Speaker 7: It's like, hey, if you go to BC, sure you
- 34:33Speaker 7: are part of a very historic.
- 34:35Speaker 10: And incredible tradition, but if you come to ASU, you
- 34:37Speaker 10: can you can write your own like you can be
- 34:39Speaker 10: a part of ours and help create it. And that's
- 34:42Speaker 10: something that really drew me to that opportunity. And from
- 34:48Speaker 10: there I think, you know, it was just an incredible experience.
- 34:52Speaker 10: We had our ups and downs, for sure, a lot
- 34:54Speaker 10: of downs to start, but by my junior year, yeah,
- 34:56Speaker 10: we just everything clicked and it was an amazing experience.
- 35:00Speaker 7: I had such a great time there and part of it.
- 35:02Speaker 1: Your final season with the Sun Devils, you get the
- 35:04Speaker 1: school's first ever at large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
- 35:07Speaker 1: How huge was that?
- 35:10Speaker 10: I mean, I think that exceeded like our wildest expectations
- 35:13Speaker 10: the two years prior we were one of the lowest
- 35:15Speaker 10: ranked teams in all of college hockey. And to get
- 35:17Speaker 10: an at large bid, you need so many different things
- 35:19Speaker 10: to go your way. You need to have all of
- 35:22Speaker 10: the luck, all the bounces, win all the right games,
- 35:25Speaker 10: lose games that you know, like there's different games that
- 35:30Speaker 10: mean different values. So like the ranking of the other
- 35:33Speaker 10: team you know you're playing means more or less whether
- 35:35Speaker 10: it's a home game, away game, a neutral game, if
- 35:38Speaker 10: you like, go and you split with like a top
- 35:40Speaker 10: team on the road, Like we had one game or
- 35:42Speaker 10: one one weekend where we played against Penn State on
- 35:45Speaker 10: the road who was a top team, and we played
- 35:49Speaker 10: them and the first night we lost and the second
- 35:51Speaker 10: night we won an overtime, and that game, like, if
- 35:53Speaker 10: we had lost that game in overtime, they would have
- 35:55Speaker 10: gotten in that at large bid and we wouldn't have.
- 35:57Speaker 10: And it's like one overtime decides it. So it's pretty crazy.
- 36:01Speaker 10: You need everything to go your way, and it was
- 36:02Speaker 10: just a Cinderella run and like, honestly, one of the
- 36:06Speaker 10: most special seasons of my career. And I don't think
- 36:10Speaker 10: anyone ever expected that to happen so early, and just
- 36:14Speaker 10: to be a part of it was was amazing.
- 36:17Speaker 1: Yeah, And it's amazing even like your journey, because it's like,
- 36:19Speaker 1: you know, you're you're under appreciated, You've you've kind of
- 36:23Speaker 1: made a lot of doubters and turned a lot of
- 36:24Speaker 1: skeptics into believers. I mean, you're claimed by Seal in
- 36:26Speaker 1: the expansion draft, you come to the crack and as
- 36:28Speaker 1: a third goalie. What's your outlook then as to how
- 36:31Speaker 1: it is now as the top guy.
- 36:34Speaker 10: Well, honestly, it was a bit of a challenge at
- 36:37Speaker 10: first because the season prior I felt like I was
- 36:40Speaker 10: starting to make a push to to make Ottawa full time.
- 36:44Speaker 10: There were some injuries with you know, the more established guys,
- 36:48Speaker 10: and I got an opportunity to play and I ended
- 36:53Speaker 10: up getting hurt, Like I hurt my ankle and I played.
- 36:57Speaker 10: I'd only played like eight or nine games, but I'd
- 36:59Speaker 10: played him in really quick succession. And DJ had said
- 37:03Speaker 10: at the time, like he was like, hey, we're gonna
- 37:04Speaker 10: We're gonna play you a little bit here, and I
- 37:06Speaker 10: was super excited because I felt like I was finally
- 37:08Speaker 10: getting my chance in the NHL.
- 37:09Speaker 7: And then I got injured. I missed the rest of
- 37:11Speaker 7: the season.
- 37:13Speaker 10: And that was like the COVID shortened season where we
- 37:15Speaker 10: played like fifty six games, I think. So then I
- 37:17Speaker 10: get picked up on expansion and it was like right
- 37:19Speaker 10: back to the miners.
- 37:20Speaker 2: So that was tough.
- 37:21Speaker 10: You know, I was really hoping the year before. I
- 37:24Speaker 10: felt like I was getting close to making that. Yet
- 37:26Speaker 10: jump to the NHL full time and then go back
- 37:29Speaker 10: to the miners. You know, at in the moment, it
- 37:31Speaker 10: was tough, but I think now looking back, that was
- 37:33Speaker 10: the best thing ever for me. The next two years,
- 37:36Speaker 10: I was the starter in Charlotte and Coachella and just
- 37:38Speaker 10: got to play a ton of games, got playoff experience.
- 37:41Speaker 10: We went to Game seven of the Calder Cup Finals
- 37:44Speaker 10: with the Coachella Valley Firebirds.
- 37:46Speaker 7: That was just huge for me.
- 37:47Speaker 10: And then when I did finally get up to the
- 37:49Speaker 10: NHL a few years later, like I just hit the
- 37:50Speaker 10: ground running, it was ready to go.
- 37:53Speaker 7: My first year was like played fifty games, and.
- 37:56Speaker 10: You know, it was I was ready, So I think
- 38:00Speaker 10: you know, when you look at it in the short term,
- 38:01Speaker 10: you're like, well, this sucks. You know, he close to
- 38:04Speaker 10: me in the NHL. But then when you look at
- 38:06Speaker 10: it now, it's like, Okay, that was probably the best
- 38:07Speaker 10: best for me.
- 38:08Speaker 1: Well, clearly you have a great attitude about and that
- 38:10Speaker 1: positive approach has served you well. Growing up, I loved
- 38:13Speaker 1: Ron Hackstall. He's my favorite players. He was so great
- 38:15Speaker 1: at handling the puck. Anytime I see a goalie and
- 38:16Speaker 1: handle the pocket, it's amazing and you're unbelievable at it.
- 38:19Speaker 1: Where did that ability come from?
- 38:22Speaker 7: Uh, well, it comes from the fact that I wish
- 38:24Speaker 7: I was a forward.
- 38:25Speaker 2: I think.
- 38:27Speaker 7: I love scoring, It's so fun.
- 38:31Speaker 10: Unfortunately, I was just way better at playing goalie than
- 38:33Speaker 10: I wasn't playing forward or d But no, honestly, I
- 38:37Speaker 10: think from a young age, like I just enjoyed handling
- 38:39Speaker 10: the puck like I think it's fun, Like I love
- 38:43Speaker 10: a great breakout pass more than like a great save. Honestly,
- 38:46Speaker 10: I love getting to make plays back there. And I
- 38:50Speaker 10: think it was in prep school. I was playing at
- 38:52Speaker 10: Cushing Academy. I really just started to just get more
- 38:56Speaker 10: aggressive with it and trust it and be more confident
- 38:58Speaker 10: with it. And then I went to junior and I
- 39:00Speaker 10: played a year in the USHL with the Meskige Lumberjacks,
- 39:02Speaker 10: and my coach, Todd Krueger at the time was like,
- 39:05Speaker 10: play everything, just go out there and rip it like
- 39:08Speaker 10: it helps us so much. So I started just doing
- 39:10Speaker 10: it a ton and got super confident with it, and
- 39:12Speaker 10: then built and built and built. And I think when
- 39:15Speaker 10: you have so many reps at it, like you just
- 39:16Speaker 10: get really confident with the puck and I spend a
- 39:19Speaker 10: lot of time working on it and I love it.
- 39:22Speaker 10: Like even our last game against LA before the break,
- 39:25Speaker 10: I had a couple of nice breakout plays and I
- 39:27Speaker 10: was more fired off about that than any of the saves.
- 39:30Speaker 1: You're great at it, so for good reason. And I've
- 39:32Speaker 1: talked to defense, and it makes such a big difference
- 39:34Speaker 1: if you have a goalie that rather than just stop
- 39:36Speaker 1: the bucking scories back, no, I'm gonna make a breakout pass,
- 39:38Speaker 1: We're gonna score a goal. So it's a great, great
- 39:40Speaker 1: credit to you. You've had some awesome celebrities coming through
- 39:42Speaker 1: the games since the inaugural season. Mike McCrady, Carse and
- 39:45Speaker 1: Pearl jam Marshawn Lynch, Russell Wilson, Sue Byrd, Gary Payton.
- 39:49Speaker 1: Have you had a favorite celebrity encounter?
- 39:52Speaker 10: Oh, man, Yeah, we get so many cool athletes and
- 39:55Speaker 10: celebrities come through. I mean, I've gotten to know Cal
- 39:59Speaker 10: Raley a little bit. Should have won MVP this year.
- 40:02Speaker 7: In my opinion, Buyer and Judge, Yeah, yeah, I mean
- 40:05Speaker 7: I get it.
- 40:06Speaker 10: Aaron Judge had a great year, but Cal what Cal
- 40:08Speaker 10: did was historic, you know, for a catcher, for a
- 40:11Speaker 10: switch hitter, and uh yeah. So I've gotten to know
- 40:14Speaker 10: him a little bit, and he's a great dude, super
- 40:17Speaker 10: humble guy, down to earth and can absolutely.
- 40:19Speaker 7: Hit the crap out of a baseball.
- 40:20Speaker 2: So good dude.
- 40:23Speaker 10: I remember the so the first year, like the inaugural,
- 40:27Speaker 10: first ever Kraken home game, I was on the bench
- 40:32Speaker 10: because I think Drieger had a minor injury, so I
- 40:35Speaker 10: got to back up that game, and like right next
- 40:38Speaker 10: to where I sit on the bench is some like
- 40:40Speaker 10: front row glass seats, and I look over I sit
- 40:42Speaker 10: down at the start of the game, I look over
- 40:43Speaker 10: and DK Metcalf sitting next to me, and that's when
- 40:46Speaker 10: he was like at the height of you know, his
- 40:49Speaker 10: his Yeah, his dominance, like he was insane. I remember
- 40:53Speaker 10: sitting next to me and I was like, this guy
- 40:54Speaker 10: is massive, Like he was huge, he was jacked.
- 40:57Speaker 7: I was like, this guy's a man rocket. I was
- 41:00Speaker 7: like what, Like, how are you supposed to compete with that?
- 41:03Speaker 5: You know?
- 41:04Speaker 10: And so so that was pretty cool. But no, we've
- 41:07Speaker 10: had so many different cool people come through. I mean
- 41:10Speaker 10: we got to meet Adam Sandler. That wasn't like at
- 41:12Speaker 10: a game, but he had a show at Climbing Pledgerina
- 41:15Speaker 10: our rank and we got to meet him after.
- 41:17Speaker 7: So yeah, it's it's pretty cool. We get to meet
- 41:19Speaker 7: lots of cool people.
- 41:20Speaker 1: Quick cal Rawley story for I worked with Ryan Roland Smith.
- 41:23Speaker 1: He's one of the broadcasters for the Mariners, and he
- 41:25Speaker 1: said that at his you know, his kid's school, they were,
- 41:27Speaker 1: you know, getting auction stuff. So we asked Cayl for
- 41:29Speaker 1: a couple of bats. He's like, sure, no problem. He's like, normally,
- 41:32Speaker 1: you know, you handler someone would do it instead. Cal
- 41:34Speaker 1: Rawley's meeting Ryan's wife at the gas station like, yeah,
- 41:37Speaker 1: there's a few bats for whatever you need. Like the
- 41:39Speaker 1: most down to earth guy, cal Rally his pickup truck
- 41:42Speaker 1: donating about so you're right, he's a very down to
- 41:44Speaker 1: earth guy and sixty home runs obviously, special Mariners make
- 41:46Speaker 1: the Alcs and Fortune fall to the Blue Jays. The
- 41:49Speaker 1: Seahawks doill win the Super Bowl. Cracking up next, I've
- 41:52Speaker 1: been to Seattle. I know what it's like, Joey. It
- 41:53Speaker 1: is an underrated, great sports city. How badly do you
- 41:56Speaker 1: want to keep this going? To have the crack and
- 41:58Speaker 1: make the playoffs?
- 41:59Speaker 10: Well, yeah, I keep saying that. I'm like, well, ever,
- 42:01Speaker 10: all the other teams you know, had big years. I
- 42:04Speaker 10: think next, I mean, that would be unreal if if
- 42:07Speaker 10: we could follow in the Seahawks footsteps. I don't think
- 42:08Speaker 10: anybody would complain about that. No, the the city here,
- 42:13Speaker 10: the sports fandom is nuts. Like I didn't really understand
- 42:17Speaker 10: it until I played here, until I moved here. Like
- 42:20Speaker 10: I'm an East Coast kid, so it you don't really
- 42:23Speaker 10: hear a ton about Seattle. And there there's the sports
- 42:26Speaker 10: fandom here, but the fans are insane, super supportive, very positive,
- 42:31Speaker 10: Like it's a very positive environment. And I mean our
- 42:35Speaker 10: hockey team we get supported so well every single night.
- 42:39Speaker 10: I mean we'll go on the road and play a
- 42:41Speaker 10: couple away games and come back to our rink, and
- 42:42Speaker 10: I'm like, holy smokes, is loud in here.
- 42:44Speaker 7: Like it's just every night, no matter what, it's loud.
- 42:47Speaker 10: And it's, you know, really cool to see how how
- 42:50Speaker 10: fired up the city gets when teams are doing well.
- 42:52Speaker 7: Like I went to Game seven, I think against.
- 42:56Speaker 10: I forget who it was. It was it against the
- 42:57Speaker 10: Blue Jays. Yeah, I think it was against the Blue Jays. Yeah,
- 43:00Speaker 10: And like I never heard it like a stadium so
- 43:03Speaker 10: loud in my life. I leave a little bit early
- 43:06Speaker 10: because we had a game the next night, but I mean,
- 43:08Speaker 10: it was so fun to be in there. The place
- 43:10Speaker 10: was absolutely rocking. The fans here are just nuts, So
- 43:14Speaker 10: it's a great place to play.
- 43:15Speaker 1: We mentioned your YouTube channel, but a great way for
- 43:18Speaker 1: you to take fans behind the scenes in your life.
- 43:19Speaker 1: Is there a favorite video so far that you posted.
- 43:23Speaker 7: I mean, yeah, I think the YouTube.
- 43:25Speaker 10: The whole YouTube thing is there's so much appetite for
- 43:29Speaker 10: the behind the scenes stuff and what it's really like,
- 43:31Speaker 10: and I think, I mean, the response so far has
- 43:36Speaker 10: been great.
- 43:37Speaker 7: Everyone really seems to like the videos. What's funny is
- 43:39Speaker 7: like the most simple things people love the most.
- 43:41Speaker 10: Like my most watched video is just a video of
- 43:44Speaker 10: me sitting in my stall explaining each piece of equipment
- 43:47Speaker 10: I wear, like it took the least effort out of
- 43:51Speaker 10: I made this extravagant video of me getting my jersey
- 43:54Speaker 10: retired ASU, like ASU sent me a private plane. It's
- 43:58Speaker 10: like the sick video, right, and it's like I think
- 44:01Speaker 10: it got like fourteen thousand views, Like still good video,
- 44:05Speaker 10: but like whatever, and I think it's like this super
- 44:07Speaker 10: sick video.
- 44:08Speaker 7: And there's a video of me sitting in my goalie
- 44:11Speaker 7: stall just being.
- 44:12Speaker 10: Like this is my yeah, this is my glove, this
- 44:16Speaker 10: is the break on it, this is why I like it,
- 44:19Speaker 10: And it's like one hundred and fifty k or whatever
- 44:21Speaker 10: it is. Yeah, it's like all right, you know you
- 44:23Speaker 10: gotta I would say I've put out I don't know,
- 44:27Speaker 10: seven eight nine videos probably, and we're just kind of
- 44:30Speaker 10: figuring out what people want to see, what people like.
- 44:32Speaker 10: And what's interesting is like I'll post a video and
- 44:36Speaker 10: then like that gear video, right, and then I get
- 44:38Speaker 10: fifty follow up questions and it's like people just want
- 44:41Speaker 10: to know like what I'm wearing, what I like to eat,
- 44:43Speaker 10: what game day is, like, what my.
- 44:45Speaker 5: Like I wear a whoop?
- 44:46Speaker 8: What?
- 44:46Speaker 10: What what's your sleep score, you know, like what's a
- 44:49Speaker 10: game day look like? All this different like, so there's
- 44:51Speaker 10: so many questions to answer.
- 44:54Speaker 7: I think there's a big appetite for it.
- 44:55Speaker 1: I agree. It's a credit to you for engaging with
- 44:57Speaker 1: the fans. It's one thing to get all those questions. Clearly,
- 44:59Speaker 1: you're respond to them. You're trying to keep them going
- 45:00Speaker 1: to the level of engagement, as they say. John Force
- 45:03Speaker 1: is a dear friend of mine. We could to work together.
- 45:04Speaker 1: Name is on prime, but he's a huge fan of yours.
- 45:06Speaker 1: I texted for us ahead of tize which size Joey said.
- 45:09Speaker 1: He's a real student of the position. Ask Hi about
- 45:11Speaker 1: the fact your dad's in the goalie staff of Detroit.
- 45:13Speaker 1: What have you learned from your dad.
- 45:16Speaker 10: I don't think we have enough time in one podcast
- 45:18Speaker 10: to talk about that. I mean, my dad was the
- 45:21Speaker 10: goalie coach for the Bruins when I was four years old,
- 45:23Speaker 10: so he was, you know, highly credentialed right away, and
- 45:28Speaker 10: we just have such a special relationship, Like he's been
- 45:31Speaker 10: such an instrumental figure in my life and just been
- 45:36Speaker 10: really fortunate to have an NHL caliber goalie coach as
- 45:39Speaker 10: a dad. You know, it's like you don't really get
- 45:42Speaker 10: that kind of access. Most kids don't growing up. So yeah,
- 45:47Speaker 10: I'm super proud of him. Now he's he's worked for
- 45:49Speaker 10: so many different NHL teams. He's worked for three different
- 45:51Speaker 10: Original six NHL teams and now he's working for the
- 45:55Speaker 10: Red Wings and loving it.
- 45:57Speaker 7: And he's just he just has so much passion for
- 45:59Speaker 7: the game.
- 45:59Speaker 10: Like we were in Florida and it was one of
- 46:03Speaker 10: the random Olympic games last week and it was like
- 46:06Speaker 10: a game. I was like, Dad, I'm going to the pool,
- 46:09Speaker 10: like I want to sit out in the sun. He's like,
- 46:10Speaker 10: I want to watch the game, you know.
- 46:11Speaker 7: I'm like, all right, go for it, dude, I'll be
- 46:14Speaker 7: by the pool. I'm getting some sun, you know. He
- 46:17Speaker 7: he just loves it. So yeah, love him to death
- 46:21Speaker 7: and definitely wouldn't be here without him.
- 46:23Speaker 1: That's sweet to know that the passion runs deep. And
- 46:25Speaker 1: also John passed along the fact you're a huge Formula
- 46:28Speaker 1: one fit expert level. Where did that come from?
- 46:31Speaker 7: Yeah, honestly, I so go back to my dad a
- 46:35Speaker 7: little bit.
- 46:36Speaker 10: My dad coached in the German league for a couple
- 46:39Speaker 10: of years, and so some of the German goalies would
- 46:42Speaker 10: come over and train from his team at their Manheim
- 46:46Speaker 10: in the summer, and one of the goalies would come
- 46:49Speaker 10: like every year. His name was Philip Lair and he'd
- 46:52Speaker 10: loved Formula One every Sunday and make me turn it
- 46:54Speaker 10: on and he's like, oh, you gotta watch this guy,
- 46:55Speaker 10: Lewis Hamilton. Lewis Hamilton, Lewis Hamilton. I'm like, okay, cool.
- 46:58Speaker 10: And at first I had no idea what was going
- 47:00Speaker 10: on and didn't really pay too much attention to it.
- 47:02Speaker 10: And then the Drive to Survive series came out out
- 47:04Speaker 10: and I just was hooked and she became a big,
- 47:07Speaker 10: big F one guy and Lewis fan. And now I'm
- 47:11Speaker 10: watching every race and practice session and trying to stay
- 47:14Speaker 10: as dialed in as I can, and started a little
- 47:17Speaker 10: uh segment on my Instagram and TikTok where I just
- 47:20Speaker 10: kind of break down some of the races and stuff.
- 47:22Speaker 7: So it's been a lot of fun. People seem to
- 47:23Speaker 7: love it, so just kind of riding with it.
- 47:25Speaker 1: Absolutely, you gotta get some way, I mean, listen, some
- 47:28Speaker 1: sort of hookup to get in the car for you know,
- 47:30Speaker 1: one day you're gonna somehow get in that fun car
- 47:32Speaker 1: right one time around the track that has to happen
- 47:34Speaker 1: at some point.
- 47:35Speaker 7: I yeah, I think you're right. I mean, honestly, those
- 47:37Speaker 7: things seem so challenging to drive.
- 47:39Speaker 10: I mean honestly, so this year, I don't know how
- 47:41Speaker 10: much you guys follow F one, but they have new
- 47:42Speaker 10: regulations this year, so the cars are like brand new,
- 47:45Speaker 10: and Lewis Hamilton was saying an interview like you basically
- 47:48Speaker 10: need a PhD to understand how to drive it, so.
- 47:51Speaker 7: Wow, Yeah, I don't know.
- 47:53Speaker 10: But then for Fernando Alonso said that the chef could
- 47:56Speaker 10: drive the car, So I don't really know what's going on.
- 47:59Speaker 1: Yeah, Lewis is just trying to underplayed like, oh my god,
- 48:01Speaker 1: it's so crazy. Nobody wins, you know, feel even better? Yeah,
- 48:04Speaker 1: literally a couple of minutes. We'll let you go, Joey,
- 48:06Speaker 1: how about a semifinal preview? What are looking forward to
- 48:08Speaker 1: for you?
- 48:09Speaker 2: Wes?
- 48:09Speaker 1: The rest of the way here at the Olympics against Slovakia.
- 48:11Speaker 1: Slovkowsky has been great for slow to the slow backs.
- 48:14Speaker 7: Yeah, he's been outstanding.
- 48:15Speaker 10: I mean it's just so much fun, right, Like, there's
- 48:17Speaker 10: nothing better than watching Olympic hockey, like best on best
- 48:20Speaker 10: NHL players.
- 48:22Speaker 7: We missed it the last couple Olympics.
- 48:24Speaker 10: I mean, honestly, I think I think as you go
- 48:26Speaker 10: in these tournaments, like I can kind of draw my
- 48:28Speaker 10: experience from last year at the World Championships.
- 48:31Speaker 7: It's even though you know.
- 48:33Speaker 10: A lot of the guys, Like playing with guys is
- 48:34Speaker 10: different than than the NHL season because you're you're playing
- 48:38Speaker 10: on the same line or the same power play almost
- 48:40Speaker 10: a whole year. You get so comfortable guys are playing
- 48:43Speaker 10: in positions you know, it's like everyone wants to be
- 48:44Speaker 10: the half wall guy in the power play. It's a
- 48:46Speaker 10: little bit different, so teams take time to like build
- 48:48Speaker 10: the tournament. I expect the guys to just keep getting
- 48:50Speaker 10: better and the team's getting more jelled. Like these are
- 48:54Speaker 10: both close games. I think both US and Canada are
- 48:56Speaker 10: gonna be much more dominant in the next next round.
- 48:59Speaker 10: They got a you know, a playoff game under their belt.
- 49:03Speaker 10: I think they're just gonna keep building and then hopefully
- 49:05Speaker 10: we get what we all want and see US and
- 49:07Speaker 10: Canada battle it off.
- 49:08Speaker 7: H in the finals.
- 49:09Speaker 1: Yeah, Buddy, might text me because it feels like a
- 49:11Speaker 1: ninety nine percent chance now we're gonna get Canada the USCA.
- 49:13Speaker 1: I said, well, don't jinx it. We all want to
- 49:14Speaker 1: see it. Knock on, yeah, knock and when we can
- 49:17Speaker 1: get that code again. Last thought since Tallas from Montreal,
- 49:19Speaker 1: every time I see the name Joey Decord, I said
- 49:21Speaker 1: Tocord like dakhor like good it has anybody made comments
- 49:25Speaker 1: to you, maybe when you're in Belleville someone saying dacord
- 49:26Speaker 1: it means good.
- 49:28Speaker 7: Yeah, I get it.
- 49:29Speaker 10: NonStop. People call me Joey okay, yeah, which I think
- 49:33Speaker 10: is funny. But you know what, you know, what's hilarious
- 49:35Speaker 10: is like to my family's Swiss, so it's a it's
- 49:38Speaker 10: like a it's a Swiss name, but people always spell
- 49:41Speaker 10: it with the apostrophe and.
- 49:43Speaker 7: Then an A.
- 49:43Speaker 10: I'm like, there's excuse me, and then a capital A.
- 49:46Speaker 10: There's no apostrophe and there's no capital A. It's just
- 49:48Speaker 10: a chord like so people are always calling that. I
- 49:50Speaker 10: think it's hilarious, but they get they just like think
- 49:54Speaker 10: it's a French name, you know, so they're they just
- 49:56Speaker 10: assume that it's with the apostrophe in the capitol A.
- 49:59Speaker 1: Oh, it's pretty funny. You got stories for Todays. Joey
- 50:01Speaker 1: Decord's have a fantastic season. The Seattle Kraken obviously you're
- 50:04Speaker 1: dude man. I thrill for you all your success, keep
- 50:06Speaker 1: the YouTube going, and I hope that it's as big
- 50:08Speaker 1: as success off the ice as it is on the ice,
- 50:10Speaker 1: and hopefully next time we see their plan for the
- 50:12Speaker 1: Stars and stripes. Thanks so much, Joey.
- 50:14Speaker 7: Yeah, thanks for having me. Guys appreciate it.
- 50:24Speaker 10: Well.
- 50:24Speaker 1: No shortage of fire in Milan, Tom Wilson's fight with
- 50:27Speaker 1: the French from Pierre Queen al and giving the team
- 50:28Speaker 1: can afford a rare Gordie Howe hat trick at the Olympics.
- 50:31Speaker 1: Not often you can use the expression now today's game,
- 50:33Speaker 1: people like, what are you talking about? Like you don't
- 50:34Speaker 1: know Gordie Hall hat trick made in Sweden and Canada curlers,
- 50:37Speaker 1: major blow up by curling stands f bonds being thrown
- 50:40Speaker 1: about about touching the rock at the hogline. That sounds
- 50:43Speaker 1: like you'd be imprisoned in a few states if we
- 50:45Speaker 1: did that. And finally, Norwegian Slaski here at the live
- 50:48Speaker 1: McGrath what nuclear Following a lackluster run with his goldbetal
- 50:51Speaker 1: hope slipping away, McGrath tossed both polls over the netting
- 50:54Speaker 1: on the side of the course, just walked off into
- 50:56Speaker 1: the wilderness. The stakes are high. I want to talk
- 50:59Speaker 1: to Nate because you said your sister us do figure skating.
- 51:01Speaker 1: Ilia Mallin was supposed to be the story of the Olympics.
- 51:03Speaker 1: Been watching end. This guy's unbelievable. The quad god the
- 51:07Speaker 1: short program, he was amazing. It looks like Owen Wilson
- 51:09Speaker 1: and Blades of Glory. And then I had to work.
- 51:11Speaker 1: I was at the network and I was like, they're
- 51:13Speaker 1: trying to get me. The second was I just gonna
- 51:14Speaker 1: watch Mallenin's long program.
- 51:15Speaker 2: I'll be there.
- 51:16Speaker 1: And then I saw the quadron into a single, like, oh,
- 51:19Speaker 1: quadron into double, like oh, he falls in his ass.
- 51:21Speaker 1: I'm like, oh my god. By the time I got
- 51:23Speaker 1: to the studio, micd up that like he fell again,
- 51:25Speaker 1: I'm like, what they go He's down to eighth. I
- 51:27Speaker 1: couldn't believe it. I feel horrible for him. Again. I
- 51:29Speaker 1: have such respect for you in athletes, but it just
- 51:31Speaker 1: shows the pressure of the games. Twenty one years of age.
- 51:33Speaker 1: I thought he'd be the face of USA Olympics. Instead
- 51:36Speaker 1: fell flat on his butt.
- 51:39Speaker 2: Especially the Olympics I think gave you.
- 51:40Speaker 3: That's that's the hardest part is like you see some
- 51:43Speaker 3: of these sports and these sports that we don't see ever,
- 51:45Speaker 3: and we always see me at the Olympics and you're like, Okay,
- 51:48Speaker 3: they have one run or one program and it's all up,
- 51:52Speaker 3: and then it's that's it, and it's four years from
- 51:54Speaker 3: now they.
- 51:55Speaker 2: Have to wait again.
- 51:55Speaker 3: And I felt for him too, because I think there
- 51:57Speaker 3: was so much hype in the nickname the quad God
- 52:00Speaker 3: and all of this, right, and then he falls three
- 52:03Speaker 3: times and then you know, he just kind of he
- 52:06Speaker 3: said it to He admitted he said he had bad
- 52:08Speaker 3: he had a bad feeling or bad bad vibes right
- 52:10Speaker 3: before he went for his program, so he said he
- 52:13Speaker 3: knew he just didn't have it, and sometimes I guess
- 52:15Speaker 3: that happened.
- 52:16Speaker 2: So I think we're gonna see more of the quad
- 52:18Speaker 2: guy the next Olympics.
- 52:19Speaker 1: So yeah, I said, when you're twenty one, he's got
- 52:21Speaker 1: four more years, twenty five, he's still be good. I mean,
- 52:23Speaker 1: we can't see the last of Eliot Mallen. Especially is
- 52:25Speaker 1: his music. He's he's skating to the sound of his
- 52:27Speaker 1: own voice, which was unbelievable. I'm like, what this is
- 52:29Speaker 1: a little self absorb But yeah, just his voice doing
- 52:32Speaker 1: a recording, which is a little odd. I love the
- 52:33Speaker 1: fact you know some of the music. The pairs two
- 52:36Speaker 1: different groups, the Canada team and the japan Tea which won,
- 52:39Speaker 1: danced to music from Gladiator, so it was like Hans
- 52:42Speaker 1: zimmers score, unbelievable.
- 52:43Speaker 2: It was great.
- 52:44Speaker 1: And I saw one of the female skaters yesterday, Andre
- 52:46Speaker 1: Bachelli's Time to Say Goodbye, which is obviously a great track.
- 52:48Speaker 1: I'm likes it really is beautiful and artistic, and he
- 52:50Speaker 1: could appreciate the technical skill along with the music and
- 52:52Speaker 1: all the rest of it. Back to more NHL news.
- 52:55Speaker 1: Halfway through a one year contract, the Sharks placing four
- 52:57Speaker 1: Jeff Skinner unconditional waivers, terminating his contract less than two
- 53:01Speaker 1: years ago. They the Savers bought him out three years
- 53:04Speaker 1: left in that an eight year, seventy two million dollar contract.
- 53:07Speaker 1: He's barely two years removed from back to back thirty
- 53:09Speaker 1: goal seasons in Buffalo, but he's now looking for his
- 53:12Speaker 1: fourth team. In three seasons, six goals and thirteen points
- 53:15Speaker 1: in thirty two games at San Jose. He turns thirty
- 53:18Speaker 1: four in May. He won the Calder in twenty eleven.
- 53:21Speaker 1: It's sad to think about nte. I think I'll get
- 53:23Speaker 1: a spot somewhere, but it's amazing how far unfortunately Jeff
- 53:26Speaker 1: Skinner has fallen.
- 53:27Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean he's definitely in the back nine of
- 53:29Speaker 2: his career. And he's had a long career too.
- 53:31Speaker 3: It remember, he's played well over a thousand games, and
- 53:33Speaker 3: he's been in the league when he was young and
- 53:35Speaker 3: he did He's had a lot of success, and I
- 53:38Speaker 3: think over the last few years he's jumped around and
- 53:40Speaker 3: it's been tough for him to kind of fit in
- 53:42Speaker 3: and find a home and find some consistency in his game.
- 53:45Speaker 2: So it hasn't worked out in San Jose.
- 53:48Speaker 3: But like you said, hopefully he can get on with
- 53:50Speaker 3: a new team and maybe a playoff team that he
- 53:52Speaker 3: could help and maybe, you know, add some scoring to
- 53:55Speaker 3: a team that might need it in the playoffs.
- 53:57Speaker 1: Yeah, no question if you know the back nine, as
- 53:59Speaker 1: you just said, go out there and try to win
- 54:00Speaker 1: a cup. Meantime, get on the Bussy. Brandon Bussy won
- 54:03Speaker 1: the Feel Good Stories of the Year, twenty wins his
- 54:05Speaker 1: first twenty four games, and now he's signed a three
- 54:07Speaker 1: year extension with Carolina five point seven million dollars average
- 54:10Speaker 1: AAVA one point nine million, which could be a steal.
- 54:13Speaker 1: I think he'll be the starter for Carolina, come playoff
- 54:15Speaker 1: to him, even if Freddie Anderson's healthy. What say you?
- 54:18Speaker 2: I totally agree?
- 54:19Speaker 3: I think you know, that's newfound goal to be able
- 54:22Speaker 3: to pick up a goalie like that and then sign
- 54:24Speaker 3: him to an extension, and probably a friendly one at
- 54:27Speaker 3: that too. And it's probably gonna last, especially with the
- 54:30Speaker 3: cap going up, and if he continues to play the
- 54:31Speaker 3: way he played the way he playing he's playing, I
- 54:34Speaker 3: think that I think you have to start him. I mean,
- 54:37Speaker 3: you have to start in the playoffs. You sign him
- 54:38Speaker 3: to the extension. He's been your guy all season. The
- 54:41Speaker 3: team plays great in front of him. Brandon Bussey is
- 54:45Speaker 3: the guy and no matter.
- 54:46Speaker 1: What, could be a different story for this Carolina Hurricanes team.
- 54:49Speaker 1: Also on a handout flowers, the Heisei family playing to
- 54:52Speaker 1: talk to these Olympics of the Kachuks and the Hues.
- 54:53Speaker 1: But Monday, big day for the Heiseis. Taylor heise Is
- 54:56Speaker 1: scoring for the US women's team five that they win
- 54:58Speaker 1: over Sweden to advance the gold medal game against Canada.
- 55:01Speaker 1: That night, younger brother Nate dreamed the go ahead three
- 55:03Speaker 1: point to lead Iowa State to a seventy sixty seven
- 55:06Speaker 1: win of the second ranked team in the country in Houston.
- 55:09Speaker 1: Pretty good week for the Heisi household. I'm always amazing
- 55:11Speaker 1: by these teams and these families. Everyone's a star. It's amazing.
- 55:15Speaker 2: It's just so much athletic ability at the Olympics. I mean,
- 55:19Speaker 2: you hear that. That's that's amazing.
- 55:21Speaker 3: That's obviously, ah it must have been a fun household
- 55:24Speaker 3: to be a part of it. And then you look
- 55:25Speaker 3: even on Team USA. You look at Brock Nelson, you
- 55:28Speaker 3: look at his grandpa and everyone that's in his uncle
- 55:31Speaker 3: Dave Christian, you know that are that are involved in
- 55:33Speaker 3: the Olympics, and it's just there's like a lineage. So
- 55:36Speaker 3: it's awesome to see when you see a whole family involved,
- 55:38Speaker 3: meaning you can even go.
- 55:39Speaker 2: To the Hughes too.
- 55:40Speaker 3: You look at you know, Hughes's dad, Hughes' mom, everyone's
- 55:43Speaker 3: everyone's an athlete, which is which is really cool to see,
- 55:47Speaker 3: very very.
- 55:47Speaker 1: Cool to see. And last thought, Cenophon's sixty happy trails
- 55:50Speaker 1: the great Robert Duval passing me at the age of
- 55:52Speaker 1: ninety five. It's just quite a stretch now as far
- 55:54Speaker 1: as leading men and stars of the seventies, Gene Hackmans
- 55:57Speaker 1: passed away, Robert Redford now Duvault, Everyone posting memes and
- 56:00Speaker 1: clips from The Godfather courses, everyone's favorite Consolieri as Tom
- 56:04Speaker 1: had and he was so great because he could be
- 56:05Speaker 1: so restrained and understated. The scene where Jack Woltz calls
- 56:08Speaker 1: him a mick krout and after takes it after he
- 56:10Speaker 1: said he was German Irish, and he said, well, I
- 56:12Speaker 1: really enjoy your pictures, mister Woltz. Very understated and of
- 56:15Speaker 1: course so bombastic. In Apocaups, now playing Lieutenant Curl Kilgore,
- 56:19Speaker 1: I love the smell of napalm in the morning. Smells
- 56:21Speaker 1: like victory, but also fantastic and a lot of smaller roles.
- 56:23Speaker 1: I see people a younger real posting clip from Days
- 56:25Speaker 1: of Thunder. He was in that NASCAR movie with Tom Cruise.
- 56:28Speaker 1: He was in a Will Ferrell movie. He was, you know,
- 56:30Speaker 1: Robert Daval was pretty much around everything. And tell I
- 56:32Speaker 1: know you love the film The Apostles, which as I do,
- 56:34Speaker 1: Pentecostal Preacher he wrote, produced, directed, and starred in him
- 56:38Speaker 1: out of young Walton Coggins, Billy Bob Thornton's in the
- 56:41Speaker 1: movie Duvall, absolute legend. That would be the Apostles about
- 56:43Speaker 1: ninety seven. Should have want an Oscar for it. He
- 56:45Speaker 1: was nominated. He won an Oscar for Tender Mercies. But
- 56:47Speaker 1: hell of at actor tell ninety five good run, they
- 56:49Speaker 1: go ahead. Favorite Robert Deval performance movie, whatever you got.
- 56:52Speaker 3: I'm gonna say, underrated, obviously this state of the Obvious
- 56:55Speaker 3: of you know, the Godfathers and everything.
- 56:57Speaker 2: But Secondhand Lions with Michael.
- 56:59Speaker 3: Caine and Hayley Joel Osmond, like really really good, really
- 57:03Speaker 3: good movie, a really good film. And I think, like,
- 57:06Speaker 3: obviously he's older than that one, but I think that
- 57:08Speaker 3: one really jumps out of me. Underrated that people really
- 57:10Speaker 3: wouldn't think of, but a great film.
- 57:12Speaker 1: I agree. Go check out Second Lant. You're right, it's
- 57:14Speaker 1: one of those under the radar you can appreciate. The
- 57:15Speaker 1: great film. So the ones on the radar, even t
- 57:17Speaker 1: Killa Mockenberg back the Day's Booll Bradley, pretty special stuff.
- 57:20Speaker 1: All right, Thanks so much for checking out HL unscripted.
- 57:22Speaker 1: Thanks to Jason de Murrs of course for hopping in
- 57:24Speaker 1: with a special report. And yeah, the last thoughts they
- 57:28Speaker 1: are telling you you kind of got cut off your
- 57:29Speaker 1: thoughts into Vaul, but go ahead.
- 57:32Speaker 11: Yeah, I'm not sure what happened there with the riverside. Know,
- 57:34Speaker 11: I was just gonna say I was watching some old
- 57:36Speaker 11: interviews online with him and I loved the story he
- 57:39Speaker 11: told about how he would hold up cue cards for
- 57:42Speaker 11: Marlon Brando and The Godfather and there was a picture
- 57:45Speaker 11: of him with Brando's lines take to his chest while
- 57:50Speaker 11: Brando was acting out in the scene.
- 57:52Speaker 7: I mean, just absolute legend.
- 57:53Speaker 11: And you know, we lose another grade like that, but
- 57:55Speaker 11: it makes us remember all these historic films that all
- 57:58Speaker 11: these legends did together, so it's fun to talk about.
- 58:02Speaker 1: Yeah, Alec BALBC he met Tavaal once in a tennis
- 58:04Speaker 1: and he said he was irascible, little cranky, he said,
- 58:06Speaker 1: but a great actor. And he said Jimmy com would
- 58:08Speaker 1: always do a good impression of Robert Deval's laugh. So
- 58:11Speaker 1: now I'll be doing that laugh for the rest of
- 58:13Speaker 1: the day. That's Robert Deavall laughing, according to Alec Ball
- 58:15Speaker 1: according to Jimmy CON's impression of him on the set
- 58:17Speaker 1: of The Godfather. Thanks for you to check out NHL Unscripted.
