- 0:00Speaker 1: We welcome you back inside Bear's Smokehouse Barbecue here in
- 0:03Speaker 1: downtown Hartford. He's head coach Mike Kavanaugh, Adam Jardino with you,
- 0:06Speaker 1: thanks to John Ashman, and right next to me thanks
- 0:10Speaker 1: to Matthew Schweiker down in Winston Salem. Coming up after
- 0:13Speaker 1: this at seven o'clock, it's Bob Joyce and Gina Oriema
- 0:17Speaker 1: with the Yukon Women's Basketball Coaches Show, and we're just
- 0:20Speaker 1: gonna occupy your night here on a Monday night from
- 0:23Speaker 1: six to eight o'clock Eastern, and actually tomorrow night we've
- 0:26Speaker 1: got the BU game on radio six forty five pre
- 0:28Speaker 1: games seven o'clock puck Drop, got the final four games
- 0:31Speaker 1: on radio in the regular season, every postseason game as well,
- 0:35Speaker 1: so you're stuck with us from here on alt Mike,
- 0:38Speaker 1: that's a good thing, Adams, a good thing as they
- 0:40Speaker 1: get to see you before every game.
- 0:42Speaker 2: That's right. Absolutely.
- 0:44Speaker 1: We had not yet talked in depth about overtime, so
- 0:48Speaker 1: I'd mentioned the faceoffs prior to that overtime begins, and
- 0:53Speaker 1: Callum Tungue had played an incredible game. He made a
- 0:56Speaker 1: save in overtime, wanted to keep the puck moving. Been
- 1:00Speaker 1: the wrong decision, and guys were out on the ice
- 1:03Speaker 1: for about a two minute shift. And what kind of
- 1:05Speaker 1: conversation goes into a decision where a freshman goalie wants
- 1:09Speaker 1: to be aggressive and overtime and might have miscalculated.
- 1:12Speaker 2: Typically he was making the right decision.
- 1:15Speaker 3: You do not want to take a whistle in overtime
- 1:18Speaker 3: if you don't have to, because that means you have
- 1:21Speaker 3: to fight for possession again. So if the goaltender has
- 1:24Speaker 3: a puck and he can clearly give it to one
- 1:27Speaker 3: of our players, that is advantage Yukon. We don't have
- 1:32Speaker 3: to get battle for a face off and it's a
- 1:35Speaker 3: fifty to fifty puck the face off.
- 1:36Speaker 2: Yeah, So, and.
- 1:38Speaker 3: We weren't very good on face offs that night, so
- 1:41Speaker 3: I understood where his thought process was at the time
- 1:45Speaker 3: though we were so tired we needed a whistle and
- 1:49Speaker 3: we've discussed it and he understands, and I totally get
- 1:54Speaker 3: where he was, where his head was at. But it's
- 1:58Speaker 3: just one of those learning things and he understands, and
- 2:03Speaker 3: going forward, I don't think he would try that again.
- 2:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:05Speaker 1: The group of Hudson Chandor Jake, Richard, Trey Scott ended
- 2:10Speaker 1: up being out there for almost two minutes and ten
- 2:12Speaker 1: seconds thereabouts. When a group is out there that long,
- 2:17Speaker 1: main's got three line changes going, they've got fresh skators.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Are they just trying to hang on and just I mean,
- 2:23Speaker 1: because you just can't keep up with the other guys
- 2:26Speaker 1: at that point, right.
- 2:26Speaker 2: It's interesting though at three on three they were just
- 2:29Speaker 2: rolling and they really weren't attacking.
- 2:32Speaker 3: They didn't get many great chances off of that, so
- 2:36Speaker 3: we didn't have to expend a lot of energy during.
- 2:41Speaker 2: That three on three.
- 2:42Speaker 3: And while it is still you're out there two minutes,
- 2:45Speaker 3: it wasn't like they were going up and down the
- 2:47Speaker 3: ice for two minutes.
- 2:49Speaker 2: So it's not ideal.
- 2:52Speaker 3: It's not something that we'd like to happen in overtime,
- 2:55Speaker 3: but you know, it wasn't as bad. I don't think
- 2:58Speaker 3: as some people think.
- 3:02Speaker 1: With about two minutes to go in overtime, Joey Muldowney,
- 3:05Speaker 1: great individual effort he draws the penalty gets you to
- 3:09Speaker 1: a four on three situation. How often are you specifically
- 3:13Speaker 1: practicing a four on three, which is different than a
- 3:16Speaker 1: five on four, which is different than a three on three.
- 3:18Speaker 1: How How often does four four on three get practiced?
- 3:22Speaker 3: Well, typically we wouldn't practice four on three much until
- 3:27Speaker 3: overtime rules changed. Yeah, because you don't get many of them.
- 3:31Speaker 3: You would practice it here and there. Since the overtime
- 3:34Speaker 3: rules have changed, it is something that you have to
- 3:37Speaker 3: practice a little bit more because it it's one of.
- 3:40Speaker 2: Us a couple of games this year.
- 3:41Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, we beat Lowell and overtime on four
- 3:43Speaker 3: on three and and we lost to Vermont four on
- 3:47Speaker 3: three and overtime. So it's something that you got to
- 3:50Speaker 3: practice it defensively as well. It's it's something that is
- 3:55Speaker 3: a little bit more prevalent in today's game because of
- 3:58Speaker 3: the overtime rules.
- 4:00Speaker 1: So then we talked about the face offs going to
- 4:02Speaker 1: break where we don't need to review the full numbers,
- 4:06Speaker 1: but the final because they weren't great. But the final
- 4:08Speaker 1: five face offs in crunch time, you guys won.
- 4:11Speaker 2: Four out of five.
- 4:12Speaker 1: So what did you see from your group just being
- 4:17Speaker 1: able to figure out a way to get some possessions
- 4:19Speaker 1: there down the stretch.
- 4:22Speaker 3: I guess I would have to talk to Hudson because
- 4:24Speaker 3: he was the one who won most of them, and
- 4:26Speaker 3: going into that he was below fifty percent, so he
- 4:30Speaker 3: probably figured something out with the guy he was going
- 4:32Speaker 3: against it's hard when you're in game. That's one thing
- 4:35Speaker 3: that's hard to coach while you're in game because a
- 4:38Speaker 3: guy can change his.
- 4:40Speaker 2: Move right before the puck drops.
- 4:42Speaker 3: So it's not like you're defending against a umbrella power
- 4:47Speaker 3: play or a spread power play. You know what the
- 4:51Speaker 3: plays are off of that, it's hard. It really has
- 4:55Speaker 3: to be the player who adjusts on the fly when
- 4:57Speaker 3: it comes to face offs.
- 5:00Speaker 1: The game winning goal, Jake Richard gets the game winner.
- 5:04Speaker 1: But I think what's stuck out to me was not
- 5:06Speaker 1: only did Trey Scott start overtime and have that two
- 5:10Speaker 1: minute shift, but then he's being trusted as a freshman
- 5:13Speaker 1: to be the one defenseman out there in a four
- 5:15Speaker 1: on three situation. We're gonna talk to both Jake and
- 5:18Speaker 1: Trey later on in this show. There are two guests tonight.
- 5:20Speaker 1: But for Trey, you know, I asked him what it
- 5:23Speaker 1: meant to him to just be trusted in that spot,
- 5:26Speaker 1: and so what do you see in him to say,
- 5:30Speaker 1: game on the line, we need a defenseman out there
- 5:32Speaker 1: and it's a freshman.
- 5:34Speaker 3: Well, Tyler Helton does a great job with our power
- 5:36Speaker 3: play and he came to me a little bit before
- 5:42Speaker 3: Christmas and said, I think Trey Scott should run this
- 5:45Speaker 3: top power play. I think he has a lot of
- 5:47Speaker 3: composure and a lot of poise, and he makes good decisions.
- 5:50Speaker 3: I said, you're running the power play. That's the decision
- 5:53Speaker 3: you want to make. Let's go for it. And I
- 5:56Speaker 3: think it's important for me as a head coach to
- 5:59Speaker 3: give my assistance Nick Perusi's running the penalty kill and
- 6:03Speaker 3: Tyler's running the power play. I have to give them,
- 6:06Speaker 3: give them the autonomy to run it as they see fit.
- 6:10Speaker 3: I can't just be over their shoulder all the time
- 6:13Speaker 3: questioning everything they're doing. So Tyler and I talked about it,
- 6:18Speaker 3: and I said, okay, Now, if I thought Trey was struggling,
- 6:22Speaker 3: obviously I would have a conversation with Tyler and discuss
- 6:28Speaker 3: why he thinks he's this good. But he was clearly right.
- 6:32Speaker 3: He's been excellent running our top power play, and Kai
- 6:37Speaker 3: jam Veria is doing a great job with the other
- 6:39Speaker 3: unit both power plays. Probably Rashard's group probably has the
- 6:45Speaker 3: majority of the goals, but they get the majority of
- 6:47Speaker 3: the snaps too, So.
- 6:50Speaker 2: For the amount of times that.
- 6:53Speaker 3: Like Garduola and Whitcomb's group has scored, it's probably on
- 6:57Speaker 3: par for the amount of minutes that they get.
- 7:01Speaker 1: It wouldn't be very fair for me to talk about
- 7:03Speaker 1: Callum Tung's performance, And the only question that we asked
- 7:05Speaker 1: you about was the one time that he tried to
- 7:07Speaker 1: move a pucket overtime. What did he do for the
- 7:09Speaker 1: full almost sixty five minutes to allow just two goals
- 7:13Speaker 1: against that main team.
- 7:14Speaker 3: He made a lot of big saves when he had
- 7:16Speaker 3: to the one area early in the game. Not so
- 7:18Speaker 3: much late in the game, but early in the game.
- 7:20Speaker 3: I did not necessarily like our decisions at the offensive
- 7:26Speaker 3: blue line, which led to some of their odd man rushes,
- 7:30Speaker 3: and we.
- 7:31Speaker 2: Broke a couple of them up. But Callum had to make.
- 7:34Speaker 3: Some big saves, and those are huge in a game,
- 7:37Speaker 3: especially when it's you have a one goal lead or
- 7:41Speaker 3: games tied and you give up an odd man rush
- 7:43Speaker 3: like that. It can be deflating if a goal goes in.
- 7:47Speaker 3: But conversely, when he makes the save, that elevates your bench,
- 7:52Speaker 3: and I thought he made some big saves when.
- 7:54Speaker 1: He had to elevates the bench, elevates the crowd. What
- 7:57Speaker 1: did you make of the hometown support on product?
- 7:59Speaker 3: It's been believable all year long I've been saying how impressed.
- 8:03Speaker 3: I was so impressed when we played U Mass at
- 8:05Speaker 3: four o'clock on a Friday. You know, I understood why
- 8:08Speaker 3: we had to play at four o'clock. It's not an
- 8:10Speaker 3: ideal time to play a game on a Friday afternoon,
- 8:13Speaker 3: but with the doubleheader, they wanted to give our fans both,
- 8:17Speaker 3: you know, a chance to see both games, and I
- 8:19Speaker 3: think a lot of them did. It was just unbelievable
- 8:23Speaker 3: that we had the building packed at four o'clock on
- 8:25Speaker 3: a Friday for you Mass. So it did not you know,
- 8:29Speaker 3: I knew that game was going to be banged out,
- 8:31Speaker 3: and they were loud, and it was awesome and we're
- 8:34Speaker 3: going to need them going down the stretch.
- 8:35Speaker 1: And for anybody that's not aware, Tuesday night, seven o'clock
- 8:38Speaker 1: Friday night, another home game against Northeastern, So keep an
- 8:43Speaker 1: eye out for tickets if you're free. Tomorrow night, seven
- 8:45Speaker 1: o'clock puck drop against top ten opponent in the Boston
- 8:48Speaker 1: University Terriers. We'll have more with head coach Mike Kavanaugh
- 8:51Speaker 1: as we move forward. This is the Yukon Men's Ice
- 8:54Speaker 1: Hockey Coaches Show from Learfield
