- 1:34Speaker 2: her complicated romance would cost.
- 1:37Speaker 1: Her her life. Narissa Knight is here now with the details.
- 1:41Speaker 7: Chris, I'm here in Mississippi where a toxic relationship ended
- 1:44Speaker 7: in murder and the case would make national headlines.
- 1:50Speaker 9: You chasing mersades to the woods.
- 1:58Speaker 3: To screaming.
- 2:03Speaker 7: Her seventeen year old Bonnie was just barely concealed beneath
- 2:07Speaker 7: sticks and leaves. The secrets that put.
- 2:09Speaker 10: Her there's KOs kill.
- 2:11Speaker 11: Inside this biadis biadis biad buried much deeper.

- 2:21Speaker 12: She was becoming what she wanted to be, she thought,
- 2:25Speaker 12: for what twisted motives led to her debt?
- 2:29Speaker 13: He had to silence her to protect his identity.
- 2:33Speaker 7: Just how did a murderer in small town Mississippi become
- 2:37Speaker 7: a national news story and a federal crime.
- 2:40Speaker 12: It makes me just want to scream.
- 2:46Speaker 7: Even from the beginning. Who killed Mercedes Williamson was not
- 2:49Speaker 7: a mystery? Why he did it? Well, that's a whole
- 2:53Speaker 7: other story.
- 2:54Speaker 3: If you could, Kathy, describe your Nie subscribe.
- 2:58Speaker 14: Mercedes fun, loving, honest.
- 3:05Speaker 2: She was very very strong and strong headed, you know, and.
- 3:11Speaker 7: The headstrong Alabama teens on Kathy says, she had big
- 3:16Speaker 7: plans for her future.
- 3:17Speaker 14: She wanted to go to California and do the famous
- 3:21Speaker 14: people's hair and makeup because she could do a better
- 3:24Speaker 14: job on them than the other people could. And she
- 3:28Speaker 14: wanted to be famous for making people famous.
- 3:33Speaker 7: Instead it would be infamy and the notoriety she craved
- 3:37Speaker 7: would come for all the wrong reasons.
- 3:40Speaker 10: She never made it.
- 3:41Speaker 14: She never made it.
- 3:43Speaker 7: It started when Mercedes met a twenty seven year old
- 3:46Speaker 7: Mississippi man named Josh Valla, first on Facebook and then
- 3:50Speaker 7: in real life.
- 3:51Speaker 3: Who is Josh? What type of person was he?
- 3:54Speaker 14: From what my sister says, he was nice. He took
- 3:58Speaker 14: Mercedes out dinner, They go to the movies.
- 4:02Speaker 1: They had a.
- 4:03Speaker 14: Relationship, girlfriend boyfriend relationship.
- 4:08Speaker 7: Here the apparently happy couple can be seen surrounded by
- 4:12Speaker 7: Josh's friends at a beach party, a night police would
- 4:15Speaker 7: learn much more about in the months to follow. Not
- 4:19Speaker 7: long after that photo, for reasons still not completely disclosed,
- 4:23Speaker 7: Josh and Mercedes broke up and for the next several
- 4:26Speaker 7: months they were out of each other's lives. Then, depending
- 4:30Speaker 7: on who you believe, a chance encounter on May thirtieth,
- 4:35Speaker 7: what happened to Mercedes that.
- 4:36Speaker 13: Day probably started out like any other day for Mercedes.
- 4:39Speaker 13: She was walking down a parkway in Daulphin Island. Josh
- 4:44Speaker 13: Vallum showed up literally on the side of the road,
- 4:47Speaker 13: rolled down the window and asked her to get in
- 4:48Speaker 13: the car, and Mercedes got in the car with you.
- 4:52Speaker 7: It was the last anyone would see of her alive.
- 4:55Speaker 7: Two days later, and roughly seventy miles away, the George
- 4:59Speaker 7: County missus us to be Sheriff's Department gets a call
- 5:02Speaker 7: from a concerned father.
- 5:04Speaker 11: I initially took a phone call from Josh Violem's dad
- 5:08Speaker 11: on Monday, June the first, saying that he believes his
- 5:12Speaker 11: son had murdered somebody and he was on the impression
- 5:15Speaker 11: the body was on his property.
- 5:18Speaker 3: When we first got there.
- 5:19Speaker 11: We discovered a foul odor of decomposing.
- 5:23Speaker 7: Flesh, and then they see it a dirty pink flipflop
- 5:29Speaker 7: resting on lifeless legs.
- 5:31Speaker 11: And we'd come across the body which was laying face
- 5:35Speaker 11: down with loose vegetation covering the body.
- 5:39Speaker 3: From the dress appearance, that was a female, but due.
- 5:43Speaker 11: To the trauma to the head and insect activity, we
- 5:47Speaker 11: were not able to identify who it was.
- 5:50Speaker 7: It was only after the body was sent to the
- 5:52Speaker 7: morgue that authorities and soon the rest of the country
- 5:56Speaker 7: would learn the identity.
- 5:58Speaker 2: Coming up person that wasn't who I thought.
- 6:01Speaker 7: He was a motive for murder. That will leave you stunned.
- 6:07Speaker 4: Who were kids?
- 6:09Speaker 9: I was groping?
- 6:15Speaker 2: A father calls cops and says he believes his son's
- 6:18Speaker 2: are murderer, and police are starting to think the same
- 6:20Speaker 2: thing after they discover a dead body. But that's only
- 6:23Speaker 2: part of the story. Let's head back to Mississippi and
- 6:26Speaker 2: our nur.
- 6:27Speaker 3: Is a Knight.
- 6:29Speaker 7: Shortly after Mercedes Williamson was picked up by her ex
- 6:32Speaker 7: boyfriend Josh Vallam, a body is found in the field
- 6:36Speaker 7: behind Josh's dad's house. What did you know at that point?
- 6:41Speaker 11: It was very, very horrific, saying because of the mulation
- 6:46Speaker 11: to the head, there was no facial recognition at all.
- 6:51Speaker 7: But when the body goes to the morgue, it is
- 6:54Speaker 7: identified as a seventeen year old boy named Michael Wilkins.
- 6:59Speaker 7: Investigative reporter Margaret Baker is working for the Mississippi Sun
- 7:03Speaker 7: Herald when her colleague gets the initial story.
- 7:06Speaker 15: As I said, all I'm saying is there was a body,
- 7:10Speaker 15: but the body had a bra.
- 7:12Speaker 7: That is the body of a boy wearing a bra.
- 7:16Speaker 10: And I'm going, okay, Well, something something strynge here.
- 7:20Speaker 7: Margaret goes back to read her colleague story and while
- 7:23Speaker 7: looking at the comments, something else strange catches her eye.
- 7:28Speaker 15: I noticed somebody had said rest in pace, Mercedes, and
- 7:34Speaker 15: I'm saying, you know who's versides.
- 7:36Speaker 7: That's when she realized that Mercedes Williamson and Michael Wilkins
- 7:42Speaker 7: were one in the.
- 7:43Speaker 10: Same Mersides was trash general?
- 7:48Speaker 7: How old was Michael when he transitioned to Mercedes fourteen?
- 7:53Speaker 7: How did that go with us?
- 7:55Speaker 14: It went well, as Dady did not accept it at
- 7:59Speaker 14: all and disowned him.
- 8:01Speaker 7: It hurt him, but Mercedes is on Camfi also says
- 8:06Speaker 7: that she was happy with who she was, so there
- 8:09Speaker 7: was no shame in Mercedes game No.
- 8:12Speaker 2: And I asked my sid do you feel comfortable?
- 8:14Speaker 14: He said, I feel happy. I said, that's all I
- 8:17Speaker 14: want to hear.
- 8:18Speaker 4: That's all that matters.
- 8:19Speaker 14: That's all that mattered.
- 8:21Speaker 7: But how much did Mercedes, one time boyfriend and now
- 8:25Speaker 7: suspected killer know about any of this?
- 8:28Speaker 4: Josh was owned Jane.
- 8:31Speaker 11: The second after we discovered mercedes body, I get a
- 8:35Speaker 11: phone call saying that Josh's father has brought him in
- 8:38Speaker 11: and he's turned himself in. And that's when Jonathan Carroll,
- 8:42Speaker 11: who's an agent with the Task Force, and myself conducted
- 8:45Speaker 11: the interview with Josh.
- 8:47Speaker 3: Will let you do all the talking?
- 8:49Speaker 8: All right?
- 8:51Speaker 9: I got proson last year. During that summer I met
- 8:54Speaker 9: this person be talled you so grew like a personal lot.
- 9:03Speaker 9: I didn't know it wasn't.
- 9:04Speaker 3: The person I thought it was.
- 9:07Speaker 7: Josh goes on to say that the two hung out
- 9:09Speaker 7: three or four times a week over several months, though
- 9:13Speaker 7: he does not know if he'd call it a natural
- 9:15Speaker 7: relationship or having sex.
- 9:19Speaker 14: You know, there was rules and how we ever got
- 9:23Speaker 14: to do is kids.
- 9:24Speaker 9: I was thinking, all right, well, maybe you know she's
- 9:27Speaker 9: a virgin. She's trying to hold.
- 9:28Speaker 7: Out, and Josh says that before he ever found out otherwise,
- 9:33Speaker 7: Mercedes ended things completely. Then that faithful day months later,
- 9:40Speaker 7: I pulled.
- 9:41Speaker 9: Over, rolled down the window.
- 9:43Speaker 15: I was like, what are you doing this evening?
- 9:45Speaker 2: She said nothing.
- 9:46Speaker 3: He said nothing, and I was like, well, now you
- 9:51Speaker 3: got plans.
- 9:51Speaker 9: Get in And I made my attentions clear. You know,
- 9:56Speaker 9: I was warning on in some sex.
- 9:59Speaker 7: And though Mercedes had, according to Josh, refused that request
- 10:03Speaker 7: every time before, he claims there was no argument that.
- 10:07Speaker 9: Day on in place that I could think to go to,
- 10:11Speaker 9: you know, high station with my dad's house. So we
- 10:15Speaker 9: get there and I dropped the back of the field.
- 10:19Speaker 3: We go to kissing. You know, take your time.
- 10:27Speaker 4: Who were kissing.
- 10:29Speaker 14: I was groping.
- 10:32Speaker 9: And I felt something that what was supposed to be there.
- 10:36Speaker 7: Josh says after that he blacked out and when he
- 10:40Speaker 7: came to.
- 10:40Speaker 3: He was staying over Mercedes with a hammer in his.
- 10:42Speaker 6: Hand, and I panicked.
- 10:46Speaker 9: All that was going through my head at the time
- 10:48Speaker 9: was you know what you know?
- 10:54Speaker 7: Then Josh claims he ran back to his car, where
- 10:57Speaker 7: he found the passenger door open, blood on the interior
- 11:01Speaker 7: and other clues.
- 11:02Speaker 15: My phone was believe me.
- 11:04Speaker 3: I couldn't find my knife.
- 11:06Speaker 9: I know I used the taser because there was landing
- 11:09Speaker 9: my floorboards of your vehicle.
- 11:13Speaker 7: But though Josh says the specifics are all a blank,
- 11:16Speaker 7: he does admit to trying to conceal his crime afterward.
- 11:20Speaker 16: And I know this makes it look bad on me
- 11:23Speaker 16: because I tried to cover it up.
- 11:25Speaker 2: It is what it is.
- 11:25Speaker 14: I can't change what I did.
- 11:27Speaker 2: If I could, Oh God. But I went home.
- 11:31Speaker 9: I got a shower, I cleaned my car. I put
- 11:36Speaker 9: the taser in, that hammer in the bags, put all
- 11:40Speaker 9: that in my car. I didn't want leave mother in
- 11:42Speaker 9: the dad's house. I didn't want I don't want anybody
- 11:45Speaker 9: involved in what I did.
- 11:47Speaker 7: So he took the hammer but left the body.
- 11:51Speaker 4: He runs to the house.
- 11:53Speaker 3: He has blood all over him.
- 11:55Speaker 11: His brother sees him, and he tells his brother, you know,
- 11:58Speaker 11: for the love of God, just keep your mouth shut,
- 12:00Speaker 11: ask no questions.
- 12:01Speaker 3: It's bad, as bad as bad I him.
- 12:04Speaker 7: Do not say anything, thankfully for the people who loved Mercedes.
- 12:09Speaker 7: His brother did talk, which is ultimately what led shearers
- 12:13Speaker 7: to the body. And Josh, I.
- 12:16Speaker 9: Didn't hate that person, though I liked that person.
- 12:20Speaker 2: That the way it turned out.
- 12:24Speaker 7: So did it all happen like Josh said it did,
- 12:28Speaker 7: a true crime of passion.
- 12:30Speaker 13: He was trying to claim what known as transgender panic
- 12:34Speaker 13: or penis panic, that that he's making out with what
- 12:37Speaker 13: he thinks is a female and he feels a penis,
- 12:39Speaker 13: and he freaks out and conducts the killing.
- 12:42Speaker 7: There was just one problem with that.
- 12:45Speaker 4: You have testimony from her neighbor. What did her neighbors.
- 12:48Speaker 11: Say that it was no doubt that joshy that you know,
- 12:51Speaker 11: Mercedes was you know, had you know, male anatomy, and
- 12:55Speaker 11: that that was not a problem with Josh.
- 12:58Speaker 7: In fact, police actually had multiple witnesses claiming they were
- 13:02Speaker 7: certain Josh and Mercedes were having sex long before that day,
- 13:07Speaker 7: and this.
- 13:08Speaker 4: Friend said that she could hear them left her home.
- 13:11Speaker 7: This was months prior. Yes, wow, so this throws out
- 13:15Speaker 7: the window the claim of him finding out in that
- 13:18Speaker 7: moment that he killed her that she was a man.
- 13:20Speaker 11: Yes, that is not true.
- 13:23Speaker 7: So then what is true? As it turns out, Mercedes
- 13:26Speaker 7: wasn't the only one with two identities.
- 13:29Speaker 9: I need to make this cleary out. I'm affiliated you
- 13:35Speaker 9: prob her that and.
- 13:36Speaker 3: Who you affiliated with?
- 13:38Speaker 11: Right?
- 13:40Speaker 7: It was a major revelation. Josh Vallam himself claiming to
- 13:43Speaker 7: be a high ranking member of the notorious Latin King
- 13:47Speaker 7: Street gang, though that's about as much as he would
- 13:50Speaker 7: say about it.
- 13:52Speaker 12: Kind of question for the hysteria he sayed that you
- 13:56Speaker 12: may want to reveal about Nebel lad King Evening.
- 14:02Speaker 9: Had nothing to do with this. It shouldn't affects him whatsoever.
- 14:07Speaker 2: I'm not a.
- 14:10Speaker 7: Trader, just a confessed murderer.
- 14:14Speaker 11: Oh he confess easily to the to the murder itself,
- 14:18Speaker 11: and for someone who's murdered somebody, he was very calm,
- 14:21Speaker 11: but yet he was very evasive, especially with the gang active, and.
- 14:26Speaker 7: As police were about to learn that had everything to
- 14:29Speaker 7: do with an even bigger secret buried in Josh's phone,
- 14:33Speaker 7: one that would blow his claims of any sort of
- 14:35Speaker 7: crime of passion out of the water.
- 14:38Speaker 13: On that cell phone told us who the real Josh
- 14:40Speaker 13: Ballam was coming up.
- 14:42Speaker 1: That was the big case breaker.
- 14:45Speaker 7: You won't believe what police find on that phone.
- 14:49Speaker 10: And she said, Joshua, I'm being set up.
- 14:52Speaker 7: Josh Vallum speaks from behind bars, revealing chilling new details
- 14:57Speaker 7: about what really happened.
- 15:00Speaker 9: Said, Oh God, Josh, please never.
- 15:06Speaker 1: It's an alarming fact.
- 15:08Speaker 2: Nearly sixty transgender men and women have been violently killed
- 15:11Speaker 2: in the last three years. One of them Mercedes Williamson
- 15:15Speaker 2: Nurissa and is back now with more of a story.
- 15:18Speaker 2: And Wyatt even attracted the attention of Caitlin Jenner.
- 15:22Speaker 7: She was born Michael Wilkins, lived and died as Mercedes Williamson,
- 15:29Speaker 7: two different identities, but in the end, a mother has
- 15:33Speaker 7: lost her only child.
- 15:37Speaker 1: The promo part so bad.
- 15:41Speaker 14: Because I don't have anybody value.
- 15:44Speaker 12: You go through life knowing that your only child was
- 15:48Speaker 12: murdered for being who they wanted to be. She's going
- 15:53Speaker 12: to live in ale and so has everybody else in
- 15:55Speaker 12: this family.
- 15:57Speaker 1: And for what.
- 15:58Speaker 7: According to the man who killed her, Ladin King's Gag
- 16:01Speaker 7: member Josh Vallam, it was because of how he found
- 16:04Speaker 7: out Mercedes was born a male.
- 16:08Speaker 9: I moved my hand, you know, trying to full play
- 16:11Speaker 9: tap my hand down and all this.
- 16:14Speaker 15: The way he put it, she had something that wasn't
- 16:16Speaker 15: supposed to be there, a penis, and he just went
- 16:20Speaker 15: into a rage and next thing you know, he's killed her.
- 16:24Speaker 3: Person.
- 16:24Speaker 9: That wasn't what I thought he was.
- 16:27Speaker 7: But multiple witnesses say that story just doesn't add up.
- 16:31Speaker 12: Lie.
- 16:32Speaker 14: They were sexual action going on in my sister's house,
- 16:38Speaker 14: and he said, well, I didn't know, you're lie.
- 16:42Speaker 7: And authorities had even more evidence to support that claim,
- 16:46Speaker 7: some of which Josh unwittingly offered up himself.
- 16:50Speaker 9: I see what, oh, y'all, I haven't fallen.
- 16:55Speaker 4: At my house.
- 16:58Speaker 7: Josh points police to an old phone he says might
- 17:01Speaker 7: have more information about Mercedes, but he forgot what else
- 17:06Speaker 7: was on that phone.
- 17:07Speaker 13: On that cell phone, I think told us who the
- 17:09Speaker 13: real Josh Ballum was. There were hundreds of pictures of
- 17:14Speaker 13: mail on male sex, of penises, And I don't know
- 17:17Speaker 13: how someone can claim of penis panic when they've got
- 17:21Speaker 13: hundreds of pictures of penises on a cell phone they used.
- 17:25Speaker 7: So if it wasn't that, what's the real reason Mercedes
- 17:29Speaker 7: had to die?
- 17:32Speaker 3: Good laws.
- 17:33Speaker 13: During the investigations, law enforcement did a search warrant at
- 17:37Speaker 13: one of the gang members' homes. At that home, we
- 17:39Speaker 13: found that a binder with all the bylaws and guidelines
- 17:43Speaker 13: that people were to.
- 17:44Speaker 7: Live by seen here in copies of the actual documents
- 17:48Speaker 7: seized by police. The rules seemed fairly straightforward. No stealing,
- 17:53Speaker 7: no discussing gang business with anyone outside of the gang,
- 17:57Speaker 7: all laws one might expect from any under organization. But
- 18:01Speaker 7: then there is rule number twenty one. No members should
- 18:05Speaker 7: be involved in homosexual activities, and that.
- 18:10Speaker 13: Was found in just a few days after Josh Ballam's arrest,
- 18:13Speaker 13: and I think that was the first thing that made
- 18:15Speaker 13: me suspicious that the gang may have been the motive
- 18:18Speaker 13: for the killing.
- 18:20Speaker 7: In fact, as part of the investigation, police did question
- 18:24Speaker 7: one of Josh's fellow gang members who gave them this photo,
- 18:27Speaker 7: the one of Josh and Mercedes at that beach party
- 18:30Speaker 7: months before. Turns out it was a Laddin King's affair,
- 18:34Speaker 7: and the other gang member says he was there that night.
- 18:38Speaker 11: He told us that he had asked Josh, you know, said,
- 18:41Speaker 11: you know, Mercedes looks kind of like, are you sure
- 18:44Speaker 11: that Mercedes not a Miami, because you know she has
- 18:48Speaker 11: itams apple, And Josh's response to him was, well, you know,
- 18:54Speaker 11: she has some harmony issues, so but yeah, she's a woman.
- 18:58Speaker 3: You know, she's a female.
- 19:00Speaker 7: So it seems Josh's own gang suspected him of breakings
- 19:04Speaker 7: rule number twenty one. But then how severe could the
- 19:08Speaker 7: punishment really be.
- 19:09Speaker 11: It's not uncommon for games that have the KOs order,
- 19:12Speaker 11: which is killed on the side when someone commits a
- 19:15Speaker 11: major violation of their bylaws and rules. He killed Mercedes
- 19:19Speaker 11: to protect himself, and that's.
- 19:21Speaker 7: How prosecutors saw it too. Josh Vellum is charged with
- 19:26Speaker 7: first degree murder by deliberate design. Though in a surprise move,
- 19:30Speaker 7: when Josh finally stands before a judge, it's to suddenly
- 19:34Speaker 7: own up to everything.
- 19:38Speaker 13: He pled guilty to a first degree murder.
- 19:42Speaker 4: He never testified.
- 19:43Speaker 6: There was never a trial.
- 19:44Speaker 4: Why do you think so?
- 19:46Speaker 11: Because he does not want the Latin Kings to know
- 19:49Speaker 11: the real reason why he killed Mercedes.
- 19:52Speaker 7: And yet it's all out there now. As part of
- 19:55Speaker 7: Josh's plea, he admits that after being confronted by other
- 19:59Speaker 7: gang members, he decided to kill Mercedes, planning how it
- 20:03Speaker 7: would happen for at least two days before he picked
- 20:06Speaker 7: her up. What's more, she may have figured it out
- 20:10Speaker 7: just before she died.
- 20:12Speaker 15: She got in the car and at one point she
- 20:14Speaker 15: got spooked.
- 20:15Speaker 10: She said, Josh am I being set up.
- 20:18Speaker 4: And her instincts told her that that's something that.
- 20:21Speaker 10: Was already afraid.
- 20:23Speaker 7: It was one of many chilling details Josh Vallum would
- 20:27Speaker 7: later reveal to Mississippi Sun Herald reporter Margaret Baker in
- 20:31Speaker 7: this jailhouse interview.
- 20:33Speaker 3: It's not my fault. She got in my vehicle after
- 20:35Speaker 3: I told her I wanted to have sex.
- 20:38Speaker 7: Josh says, after driving Mercedes over seventy miles to his
- 20:42Speaker 7: dad's property. The endgame began.
- 20:46Speaker 15: I stop, and pretty quickly he pulls out the stun
- 20:50Speaker 15: gun and sticks her with that. He had the knock
- 20:54Speaker 15: and he started stabbing her or anything.
- 20:57Speaker 10: She said. She said, oh God, Josh, please now, and.
- 21:02Speaker 15: She's saying, you know, she really wants to live, you know,
- 21:07Speaker 15: don't do this, and you know, I'm so young. She
- 21:12Speaker 15: was screaming, and she managed to get out of the
- 21:16Speaker 15: side of the car, of the passenger's side and ran around,
- 21:19Speaker 15: and he chased her until you finally caught up with her.
- 21:26Speaker 10: Hit her, hit her in the heaven and hammer, he said.
- 21:31Speaker 15: He beat her over the head with the claw hammer
- 21:34Speaker 15: until she fell out, and he beat her a couple
- 21:39Speaker 15: more times with the claw hammer and make sure she
- 21:41Speaker 15: was dead.
- 21:42Speaker 3: I wish that I could take it back.
- 21:43Speaker 9: If there was one thing that I could take back,
- 21:45Speaker 9: I wish that that would be it.
- 21:48Speaker 7: And oddly enough, that's one thing authorities actually believe.
- 21:53Speaker 1: This is kind of a weird case because I believe it.
- 21:56Speaker 13: Josh and Mercedes loved each other, but he chose the
- 22:00Speaker 13: game over that love. If there's no game, there's no killing.
- 22:05Speaker 7: For pleading guilty to first degree murder in the state
- 22:08Speaker 7: of Mississippi. Josh Vellum is given a life sentence, but
- 22:12Speaker 7: that still wasn't the end of the story. During Josh's
- 22:16Speaker 7: initial interrogation, he made this telling prediction, I.
- 22:20Speaker 9: Mean, would this, being a transational as five would be
- 22:22Speaker 9: label as a hate crime?
- 22:24Speaker 7: He was right. In addition to his life sentence in Mississippi,
- 22:28Speaker 7: Josh Vallam receives an additional forty nine years in federal
- 22:32Speaker 7: prison after being convicted under the Matthew Shepard James Bird
- 22:36Speaker 7: Junior Hate Crime Prevention Act, making him the first person
- 22:40Speaker 7: ever prosecuted for a specifically transphobic attack.
- 22:44Speaker 3: What would you say to Josh if you could talk
- 22:46Speaker 3: to him?
- 22:47Speaker 12: How dare you? How dare you take somebody out of
- 22:50Speaker 12: this world?
- 22:56Speaker 3: What gives you the rite?
- 22:59Speaker 14: Josh took Mercedes from us, but he didn't take the
- 23:05Speaker 14: happiness and Mercedes gave us.
- 23:09Speaker 2: And the tragic case of Mercedes even touched hearts in Hollywood.
- 23:13Speaker 2: During her emotional speech at the eSPI Awards, Caitlin Jenner
- 23:17Speaker 2: used Williamson's murder as an example of why the former
- 23:20Speaker 2: olympian decided to come forward in a hope to quote
- 23:24Speaker 2: do whatever I can to reshape the landscape of how
- 23:27Speaker 2: trans issues are viewed and how trans people are treated.
- 23:32Speaker 2: Coming up a high school student turned hit man, you
- 23:35Speaker 2: were willing to do that for Cheryl at the age
- 23:37Speaker 2: of sixteen, I was yeah. A Crime Watch Daily exclusive,
- 23:41Speaker 2: the trigger man in the Cheryl Cuccio story tells his
- 23:44Speaker 2: side of the murder for higher plot set rock Long Island.
- 23:48Speaker 4: Her father stepped out of the house.
- 23:50Speaker 5: As he stepped towards me, I stepped out of the shadow.
- 23:54Speaker 3: That's next.
- 23:56Speaker 2: On yesterday's Crime Watch Daily, we brought you the story.
- 23:59Speaker 1: Of Cheryl Cucio when she was sixteen.
- 24:02Speaker 2: She became infamous here in New York after she and
- 24:05Speaker 2: her boyfriend paid a high school classmate to kill her
- 24:08Speaker 2: abusive father. Well, today, the teen they hired, the former
- 24:12Speaker 2: boy scout turned contract killer, is telling his side of
- 24:15Speaker 2: the story to me in an all new interview, and
- 24:18Speaker 2: before you judge his actions, you might want to.
- 24:20Speaker 1: Hear just what he has to say.
- 24:24Speaker 2: Cheryl Cuzio, she was once a scared teenager with a
- 24:27Speaker 2: terrifying secret that she has now revealed in shocking detail
- 24:33Speaker 2: to Crime Watch Daily.
- 24:34Speaker 14: He kind of just came up from behind me and
- 24:37Speaker 14: just pulled my shots down and had his pants down.
- 24:40Speaker 3: You were eleven, I was eleven.
- 24:43Speaker 2: All about the years of brutal sexual abuse she says
- 24:47Speaker 2: she suffered at the hands of her own father, Jim Pearson,
- 24:52Speaker 2: and what she finally did to end at all.
- 24:55Speaker 17: I just said, who would be crazy enough to kill
- 24:58Speaker 17: somebody for money?
- 25:00Speaker 12: He said, I would.
- 25:07Speaker 2: Shawn Pica is that person who would read to take
- 25:09Speaker 2: out Cheryl's dad.
- 25:13Speaker 4: She very specifically asked me to kill her father.
- 25:17Speaker 2: Once a scared kid himself, Pica says he was just
- 25:20Speaker 2: trying to help his friend Cheryl by doing her a
- 25:22Speaker 2: really big favor.
- 25:25Speaker 5: Her father stepped out of the house. As he stepped
- 25:28Speaker 5: towards me, I stepped out of the shadow, and there
- 25:34Speaker 5: was a moment of recognition.
- 25:36Speaker 2: This is Sean Pica today, sitting down for an exclusive
- 25:40Speaker 2: new interview with Crimewatch Daily, giving his side of the
- 25:43Speaker 2: story that Cheryl Cuccio told us yesterday.
- 25:46Speaker 3: How did you meet Cheryl?
- 25:48Speaker 5: Cheryl and I sat next to each other because our
- 25:50Speaker 5: last names both start with P for one hundred and
- 25:53Speaker 5: fifty million years from grade school lay up.
- 25:56Speaker 2: Back at high school in Long Island, New York. They
- 25:59Speaker 2: were too classmates who talked about everything under the sun
- 26:02Speaker 2: in home room, and then one day, he says, the
- 26:06Speaker 2: talk turned to murder.
- 26:09Speaker 5: There was a teacher at one of the local high
- 26:11Speaker 5: schools that had hired one of her students to kill
- 26:14Speaker 5: her husband, and that turned into a very private conversation
- 26:19Speaker 5: between only Cheryl and I where she said that she
- 26:22Speaker 5: wanted to kill her father.
- 26:24Speaker 2: For Cheryl, it's the only way to end her nightmare.
- 26:29Speaker 3: Did she specifically say that her father was sexually.
- 26:32Speaker 4: She she did, yes.
- 26:34Speaker 3: And did she get into detail about this.
- 26:36Speaker 4: No, I wasn't asking details.
- 26:38Speaker 5: I mean the second that she told me that her
- 26:40Speaker 5: father was doing things that he shouldn't have I was
- 26:42Speaker 5: there with her.
- 26:43Speaker 4: I got it.
- 26:44Speaker 3: Did you believe her?
- 26:45Speaker 4: I did? Yeah, I still believe her.
- 26:47Speaker 2: But Cheryl told us that she never explained to Sean
- 26:50Speaker 2: any of the dirty details about why she wanted her
- 26:53Speaker 2: father dad, and that he was willing to do it
- 26:55Speaker 2: for the money alone. Pica, on the other hand, tells
- 26:58Speaker 2: me he wanted to help end his friend's pain, but
- 27:02Speaker 2: now he was tortured.
- 27:04Speaker 5: I continually danced with it in my head that I
- 27:07Speaker 5: knew that I was doing something very wrong, but I
- 27:09Speaker 5: was doing it for the right reason, and I was
- 27:11Speaker 5: helping a friend.
- 27:13Speaker 2: He says. Cheryl agreed to pay him one thousand dollars
- 27:17Speaker 2: for the job, four hundred up front. What Sean says
- 27:21Speaker 2: he used to buy a gun from a friend.
- 27:24Speaker 3: Did you actually think he'd go through with this when
- 27:27Speaker 3: you took the foreigner bucks?
- 27:28Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 27:29Speaker 3: I mean, you were willing to do that for Cheryl
- 27:31Speaker 3: at the age of sixteen, I was.
- 27:32Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 27:33Speaker 2: Cheryl has taken a big step and contracting to kill
- 27:36Speaker 2: her dad, a single father who she says is not
- 27:40Speaker 2: only a harsh disciplinarian, but a monster who has raped
- 27:43Speaker 2: her repeatedly. But after nearly three months of talking about
- 27:47Speaker 2: pulling the trigger, Sean says he has an attack of conscience.
- 27:52Speaker 2: Sean is a one time boy scout and the son
- 27:55Speaker 2: of a former New York City cop. He's not the
- 27:59Speaker 2: kind of kid who would go around committee murder for friends.
- 28:03Speaker 4: I met with her and told her I just can't
- 28:05Speaker 4: do it.
- 28:06Speaker 5: And the burden, I mean, I felt like a truck
- 28:08Speaker 5: had been lifted off my back.
- 28:11Speaker 2: That's why what happens next defies the imagination unless you
- 28:15Speaker 2: can imagine being sixteen again and literally under the gun.
- 28:20Speaker 5: I just felt like I had let her down and
- 28:22Speaker 5: that there was no one else that was going.
- 28:23Speaker 4: To help her.
- 28:25Speaker 2: Next, Sean Pica makes the biggest mistake of his life.
- 28:30Speaker 4: I had the gun already and I went to her house.
- 28:36Speaker 2: And the ultimate impact on his life will stun you.
- 28:40Speaker 5: I truly believe there's a lot of luck involved. I
- 28:43Speaker 5: think the stars were aligned.
- 28:48Speaker 2: What started as an innocent conversation between high school classmates
- 28:52Speaker 2: had soon turned into a real life murder for hire
- 28:55Speaker 2: plot hatched in home room one thousand dollars for one
- 28:59Speaker 2: dead fire.
- 29:00Speaker 1: Today, the man holding the gun tells me what happened.
- 29:03Speaker 2: Next, sixteen year old Sean Pica is faced with the
- 29:07Speaker 2: most momentous decision of his young life, to kill or
- 29:11Speaker 2: not to kill.
- 29:12Speaker 5: The conversation became very seriously, very quickly, and I wasn't
- 29:16Speaker 5: able to kind of share with anybody else or maybe
- 29:19Speaker 5: get some guys from anybody.
- 29:20Speaker 2: Else, he says. At first, his conscience won't allow him
- 29:24Speaker 2: to do what he first promised, murder the father of
- 29:27Speaker 2: his friend, Cheryl Pearson. Pika claims Cheryl told him her
- 29:31Speaker 2: father was molesting her, claim Gerald denies. Cuccio does admit
- 29:35Speaker 2: she told Pika she wanted her dad Dad and asked
- 29:38Speaker 2: him to do it.
- 29:39Speaker 5: I was just racked with guilt that I had let
- 29:42Speaker 5: a friend down.
- 29:43Speaker 2: Finally, Pica says, he can't take it anymore.
- 29:47Speaker 3: Tell me about that morning. What did you do?
- 29:50Speaker 5: I woke up that morning and I had the gun already,
- 29:57Speaker 5: and I went to her house. I remember walking down
- 30:00Speaker 5: her street, gun in hand, just saying, well, if I
- 30:04Speaker 5: get stopped or if somebody sees me, then that's what happens.
- 30:09Speaker 5: And I was just waiting for something to kind of
- 30:10Speaker 5: stop this from going in the direction it was going in.
- 30:14Speaker 4: But I didn't stop.
- 30:16Speaker 2: The former boy scout and son of a cop, A
- 30:18Speaker 2: scared sixteen year old kid walking down the street pre
- 30:22Speaker 2: dawn with a gun in his hand, but he could
- 30:26Speaker 2: be the most cold blooded hit man a lot. When
- 30:29Speaker 2: he sees Cheryl's father headed out of his house on
- 30:32Speaker 2: that dark morning in February.
- 30:34Speaker 5: I stepped out of the shadow. No words were exchanged.
- 30:39Speaker 2: He pulls the trigger five times, five times.
- 30:45Speaker 5: Yeah, he said nothing, No, you said nothing, no, And
- 30:49Speaker 5: I just walked away and went home.
- 30:52Speaker 2: All five bullets find their mark as he walked away.
- 30:56Speaker 2: Sean Pica knew his friend's father would never bother her again.
- 31:01Speaker 4: I went there to kill him. It just seemed like
- 31:04Speaker 4: I didn't want to fail.
- 31:06Speaker 2: Pearson lies dead in his driveway, But Sean says he
- 31:10Speaker 2: didn't even let Cheryl know he was coming over that
- 31:13Speaker 2: morning to do the job. And when he goes back
- 31:16Speaker 2: to school, the hallways are buzzing with gossip, none of
- 31:20Speaker 2: it about him.
- 31:22Speaker 5: Everybody in our school was talking about Cheryl. The entire
- 31:26Speaker 5: school was already talking about they thought Cheryl killed her father.
- 31:31Speaker 2: And here's the really strange part. Sean says he was
- 31:34Speaker 2: fully expecting to get caught for the crime.
- 31:37Speaker 5: The idea that I might not get a wrestler, they
- 31:40Speaker 5: might not figure out who this was started to scare
- 31:42Speaker 5: me more than the fact of getting caught, because I
- 31:45Speaker 5: wasn't prepared to live with nobody knowing what I had
- 31:47Speaker 5: done and acting like nothing had happened.
- 31:49Speaker 2: But as might be expected in a high school murder plot,
- 31:52Speaker 2: the law catch us up with Seawan in a matter
- 31:55Speaker 2: of days. In the end, he pleads guilty to manslaughter
- 31:59Speaker 2: in a sentence twenty four years in prison, and now
- 32:02Speaker 2: he's scared all over again.
- 32:05Speaker 5: It was just a huge, huge cell block with a
- 32:10Speaker 5: million people. I couldn't envision how I would possibly live
- 32:14Speaker 5: there for twenty four years.
- 32:16Speaker 4: I literally thought my life was over.
- 32:18Speaker 2: His old high school guidance counselor never had him pegged
- 32:21Speaker 2: for college material. But once behind bar, Sean says he
- 32:25Speaker 2: starts to get serious about his life and earns his ged.
- 32:30Speaker 5: The officers were the ones that said, I don't know
- 32:32Speaker 5: if you know it, but there's.
- 32:33Speaker 4: A pre college program here.
- 32:35Speaker 2: I gave it a shot, and during his sixteen years served,
- 32:39Speaker 2: continuing through his release, he's earned a wall full of
- 32:42Speaker 2: diplomas for college and graduate studies and a master's in
- 32:46Speaker 2: social work, most of it thanks to the Hudson Link
- 32:49Speaker 2: for Higher Education in Prison, a program that helps inmates
- 32:53Speaker 2: get on their feet.
- 32:55Speaker 3: How did you get involved in this program?
- 32:59Speaker 5: I think the easy answer is I shot and killed
- 33:01Speaker 5: a man.
- 33:02Speaker 2: But now Sean advises the more traditional route, like stay
- 33:06Speaker 2: in high school and think twice before doing someone a favor.
- 33:11Speaker 2: Is it hard for you to look back at the
- 33:14Speaker 2: sixteen year old Shawn who killed Charl's dad.
- 33:17Speaker 5: And I wouldn't recommend anybody to pick up a gun
- 33:20Speaker 5: in any way and think.
- 33:21Speaker 4: They're going to help somebody else. It was a huge mistake.
- 33:24Speaker 3: In some ways. Did you do society a favor.
- 33:27Speaker 4: I would not go that far.
- 33:29Speaker 5: I regret every day that I shot and killed her father,
- 33:33Speaker 5: not because it didn't help her, but because I will
- 33:36Speaker 5: see his face every single day.
- 33:38Speaker 2: But through it all, Sean says he has not only
- 33:41Speaker 2: found hope and a new life through Hudson Link. Today
- 33:44Speaker 2: he's the program's executive director.
- 33:47Speaker 5: I would love to stop talking about the single worst
- 33:49Speaker 5: mistake I haven't made in my life, but that's also
- 33:52Speaker 5: the same mistake that put me in a position to
- 33:54Speaker 5: become the person I am today, and I don't want
- 33:57Speaker 5: to forget where I came from.
- 34:00Speaker 2: To see more of my interviews with the other players

- 34:09Speaker 2: our Facebook page or YouTube channel. Still to come, ten bodies.
- 34:16Speaker 2: A monster is still on the loose.
- 34:18Speaker 11: These girls did not deserve to.
- 34:20Speaker 2: Guy the very good Gude Crime Watch Daily with an
- 34:23Speaker 2: explosive update on the hunt of the Long Island serial killer.
- 34:27Speaker 2: The new clues investigators could be closed to catching their.
- 34:30Speaker 8: God, but of course, alarm bells went off among US reporters.
- 34:35Speaker 3: That's next.
- 34:37Speaker 2: Prime Watch Daily has been all over the hunt for
- 34:39Speaker 2: the mysterious Long Island serial killer who has murdered as
- 34:43Speaker 2: many as ten women near Gilgo Beach. For years, the nameless,
- 34:47Speaker 2: faceless murder has been like a ghost, but an intriguing
- 34:50Speaker 2: new interview has people wondering if investigators are closer than
- 34:53Speaker 2: ever to catching their man.
- 34:55Speaker 1: Here's Michelle Sigona.
- 34:58Speaker 6: It may be the most famous unsolved serial killer case
- 35:02Speaker 6: on the books today. A murder mystery Crime Watch Daily
- 35:06Speaker 6: has been following closely near Gilgo Beach, Long Island, were
- 35:11Speaker 6: at least ten bodies, mostly strangled young women found hidden
- 35:15Speaker 6: in the brush.
- 35:16Speaker 4: These girls did not deserve to guard the lago board.
- 35:20Speaker 6: But now this bombshell development John diks doing it. Could
- 35:26Speaker 6: this Long Island man, recently convicted of two savage murders
- 35:29Speaker 6: be linked as some of the victims found on Gilgo Beach.
- 35:32Speaker 6: At least one wawman is saying there's a chance.
- 35:36Speaker 8: All he said was that this could be the handiwork
- 35:39Speaker 8: of John bittrough The carpenter.
- 35:41Speaker 6: John Bittroff has just been sentenced to two consecutive sentences
- 35:46Speaker 6: of twenty five years to live after being found guilty
- 35:49Speaker 6: in the murders of thirty one year old Rida Tangretti
- 35:52Speaker 6: and twenty year old Colleen mcnamie, their strangled bodies found
- 35:56Speaker 6: more than twenty years ago, not far from his home
- 35:59Speaker 6: in manner Long Island, where the fifty one year old
- 36:02Speaker 6: carpenter lives with his wife and two kids. The clinching
- 36:07Speaker 6: evidence DNA found on the victims matching Bitchrof. Our WPIX
- 36:13Speaker 6: affiliate reporter in New York, Mary Murphy, has spent years
- 36:17Speaker 6: covering this story.
- 36:20Speaker 8: They had both been beaten pretty badly, and they were
- 36:22Speaker 8: positioned in a certain way, so it was sort of
- 36:25Speaker 8: obvious that the same killer had killed both of them.
- 36:28Speaker 6: And now a startling statement that may link Bitroff to the.
- 36:32Speaker 7: Strangled girls on Gilgo Beach.
- 36:35Speaker 6: Which is about forty miles from his house. Assistant Stuffolk
- 36:39Speaker 6: County DA Robert Bianca Villa made this statement to the
- 36:42Speaker 6: Associated Press quote, there are remains of the victims at
- 36:46Speaker 6: Gilgo that may be attributed to the handiwork mister bitchrof
- 36:50Speaker 6: and the investigation is continuing.
- 36:52Speaker 8: He didn't get specific at all, he didn't elaborate, but
- 36:55Speaker 8: of course alarm bells went off among US reporters.
- 36:59Speaker 6: That's because three years ago When Bittrof was first charged
- 37:03Speaker 6: in the Tan Gretti and Macname killings, Suffolk County DA
- 37:06Speaker 6: Tom Spoda said.
- 37:07Speaker 18: This, there is no evidentiary or investigative link between these
- 37:13Speaker 18: two murders and any of the Gilgo victims, So.
- 37:18Speaker 7: What happened to make them change their minds?
- 37:21Speaker 6: The DA's office hasn't said anything beyond their initial statement,
- 37:25Speaker 6: and Suffolk County Police aren't commenting, but it appears that
- 37:30Speaker 6: there is a gruesome connection between Bittrof's hometown of Manorville
- 37:35Speaker 6: and Gilgo Beach.
- 37:37Speaker 8: In two thousand, the torso of an unidentified woman was
- 37:41Speaker 8: found there in Manerville, Long Island. In two thousand and three,
- 37:45Speaker 8: the toroso of Jessica Taylor was found in Manerville, Long Island,
- 37:49Speaker 8: and it wasn't until years later that there were body
- 37:52Speaker 8: parts found in the Gilgo Beach area that were connected
- 37:55Speaker 8: to those two early victims.
- 37:58Speaker 6: Crime Watch JELI has been following the case closely, and
- 38:01Speaker 6: we also followed this guy, doctor Peter Hackett, tagged by
- 38:06Speaker 6: Attorney John Ray as the man investigators should be looking at.
- 38:11Speaker 6: Ray represented the family of Shannon Gilbert, whose remains were
- 38:14Speaker 6: found on Gilgo Beach in twenty eleven, just two days
- 38:18Speaker 6: after her disappearance. Shannon Gilbert's mother says doctor Hackett inserted himself.
- 38:24Speaker 7: Into the middle of the mystery.
- 38:26Speaker 4: I got a phone call.
- 38:27Speaker 17: He said, my name is doctor Peter Hackett, calling to
- 38:30Speaker 17: see if your daughter Shannon is there. I said, no, why,
- 38:33Speaker 17: who are you? And he said that he ran a
