- 0:00Speaker: If you're feeling ashamed about the state of your house, then you need a
- 0:04game plan, not a slow living escape video or a self-justifying whining session.
- 0:11You need real homemaking motivation, and I've got you
- 0:16If you are a normal mom in a normal situation, then for sure you have
- 0:22or currently are looking around and saying, " Why are these toys
- 0:27scattered all over the place?
- 0:29Why is it so hard to keep the kitchen clean?
- 0:32I'm the only one who ever cares about cooking and cleaning.
- 0:36Do you see this mess?"
- 0:38This mess means I'm a failure.
- 0:41I just can't manage.
- 0:43I can't keep all the plates spinning.
- 0:45I'm never doing enough.
- 0:46I'm never doing well enough.
- 0:48I need to be more efficient, more organized, have more
- 0:51routines, plan better, something
- 0:54I hear this all the time.
- 0:56If you were to come into Convivial Circle, my community where I help
- 1:00Christian moms become more cheerful, capable homemakers, then these three
- 1:06things are where I would have you start
- 1:09First, I would have you brain dump.
- 1:11Second, I would have you set a timer for 10 minutes
- 1:14And third, we would write down three things for you today.
- 1:19Third, you'd write down three things that you were gonna do today, and one
- 1:23of those three things would be smile
- 1:27So let's dive in and get more specific about each one of these three.
- 1:32You can even follow along and do these along with me, pausing if you
- 1:37need to, and then continuing so that you can stop feeling ashamed of the
- 1:44state of your house, spiraling in your head, and feeling like there's
- 1:49no way for you to stop feeling behind.
- 1:53There is, and here's what we're gonna do to tackle it.
- 1:56First, you're gonna brain dump.
- 1:58Brain dump means writing down whatever thoughts are in your head onto paper.
- 2:02So grab any paper, a notebook, an index card, the back of an envelope,
- 2:09the back of a packaging wrapper.
- 2:10It can be trash.
- 2:12It doesn't matter what you're writing things on, but you're going
- 2:16to write down what's in your head.
- 2:19Because a big part of that shame spiral is just letting our thoughts
- 2:26take the wheel and take control and spiral into vague, nebulous negativity.
- 2:35It's always easier to be critical than to be constructive.
- 2:42And so those negative loops are really just the easy
- 2:47path that our brain is taking
- 2:50It takes effort and work to be constructive, to build something,
- 2:54to do something different.
- 2:56And your brain would rather choose the comfortable path
- 3:00of noticing what's wrong and feeling bad about it So we're going to
- 3:05stop that negative mental spiral by becoming more aware of it.
- 3:10The brain dump is where you write that all down, and it becomes less
- 3:17scary and less negative, less shameful when you write those words down on
- 3:23paper and see them for what they are.
- 3:27When you can see them and think about them concretely, some of
- 3:31their emotional weight is removed.
- 3:36And instead of simply feeling those things, you can think
- 3:42about them more objectively.
- 3:44You get to take a step back and have more self-awareness
- 3:47and even situation awareness.
- 3:49And then you can process them and think about them, and even reject them, reject
- 3:55those thoughts and feelings and recognize like, "Why am I even thinking this?
- 4:00This is actually wrong.
- 4:01This is actually a bad perspective.
- 4:04The truth is this other thing over here."
- 4:07And it's only in being able to think about what we're thinking that we
- 4:13can have that kind of negotiation and self-awareness with ourselves.
- 4:19So this is where the brain dump exercise is so helpful to get out of
- 4:25the negative shame spiral in our heads.
- 4:28So one way to get started with this is just to set a timer, five
- 4:32minutes if you've never brain dumped before, 10 minutes if you've tried it
- 4:36before, and just see what comes out.
- 4:40You will probably be surprised.
- 4:42Okay, so the second thing that we're going to do is to set a timer for
- 4:4610 minutes and pick one area of the house that's really bothering you.
- 4:52It doesn't really matter what it is.
- 4:53It could be the dishes, it could be the laundry, it could be the
- 4:56table over by the front door.
- 4:59It doesn't have to be the most significant or the most important thing.
- 5:04It actually just has to be something that bothers you
- 5:07So what really feels like it's nagging at you right now?
- 5:12What do you wish you had time to take care of
- 5:15But you just don't think that you have the time Maybe it's your desk,
- 5:19maybe it's your bedside table.
- 5:21, Maybe it's the coat closet.
- 5:23Something probably that doesn't seem essential, but it's really bothering you.
- 5:28Pick what's really bothering you without worrying about what
- 5:32the most important thing is.
- 5:33This is just 10 minutes.
- 5:35Take care of that one spot for 10 minutes.
- 5:39This helps us in two ways.
- 5:43First If you pay attention to this spot before your 10 minutes and after your
- 5:4910 minutes, you will be amazed at the difference that 10 minutes can make.
- 5:5410 minutes of focused activity in one specific spot can make a huge difference.
- 6:04And you're not worried about finishing it.
- 6:06You're not worried about getting it to a certain state.
- 6:09All you're doing is spending 10 minutes making it better And you
- 6:14really can make it so much better than you thought in only 10 minutes.
- 6:19And so this helps us recognize our ability to actually get things done, which our
- 6:26negative spiral is telling us that we don't have time, that we can't get things
- 6:32done, that we are not good at stuff.
- 6:34And so just spending 10 minutes and noticing the improvement that 10 minutes
- 6:38can make completely flips that script.
- 6:42And then you start recognizing, "Hey, I can use 10 minutes to make
- 6:47a difference," and that feels great.
- 6:50And the second thing that- really makes this change your feelings about
- 6:57yourself and your home is that you chose something that's bothering you rather than
- 7:03something that just maybe feels like you should do but you don't care about it.
- 7:07You can spend 10 minutes fixing something that bothers you That is
- 7:13agency, that is responsibility, and that is what the shame thoughts in your
- 7:21head are actually removing from you.
- 7:25So you will shut down all those feelings of shame around your supposed inability
- 7:32to keep up with the housework when you become the kind of person who can
- 7:38just take care of something that's bothering you in 10 minutes or less.
- 7:42That's a completely different picture, a completely different story.
- 7:46The same circumstances, but one is shutting you down and just beating you
- 7:54down, and the other says, "No biggie.
- 7:58I can make a difference in 10 minutes.
- 8:00I do that all the time.
- 8:02I don't have to take all day.
- 8:04I don't have to make it perfect.
- 8:06I don't have to finish it.
- 8:07But if there is something that's bothering me, I can make it better in 10 minutes.
- 8:12I can improve my situation.
- 8:14I can take responsibility.
- 8:16I can make a difference here."
- 8:19And then you just do it in a way that is not very significant
- 8:24in the whole scope of your day.
- 8:27You know, just 10 minutes
- 8:29It completely changes your orientation and your approach and that internal
- 8:34narrative about the work to be done.
- 8:38And it starts with just a 10-minute timer.
- 8:40Try it
- 8:42All right, the third thing that you are going to do when your house,
- 8:48when the state of your house is just really dragging you down, is you're
- 8:51gonna take an index card or a Post-it Note or some kind of small piece of
- 8:56paper, we call this a daily card, and you're gonna write down just three
- 9:01things that you're gonna do today
- 9:03Three small things
- 9:06And one of those things that you are going to do is smile.
- 9:11It needs to go on the top of your list because your face and your attitude
- 9:18and your approach to your home and to the people around you as a mom
- 9:24and a wife makes all the difference.
- 9:28We as wives and mothers set the tone for our home.
- 9:32And so if we want to enjoy our home, if we want our children to enjoy the home
- 9:39and enjoy one another and have fellowship and peace in the home, it starts with us,
- 9:46and it actually is as simple as smiling.
- 9:49It doesn't take getting on top of everything.
- 9:52It doesn't start with having dinner on the table on time.
- 9:56It's important, but that's not actually where you start.
- 9:59You don't start with picking everything up or getting rid of everything.
- 10:04You actually start with smiling
- 10:08And that joy turns into energy to actually do the most important things
- 10:14throughout the day, to recognize what the most important things are.
- 10:18Because a smile, again, gets you out of yourself, focuses you on
- 10:23other people and other things
- 10:26reminds you that you do enjoy your life.
- 10:31And it makes such a difference that it is worth putting on the top of
- 10:35your to-do list, even when your to-do list has only three things.
- 10:39I have a free training about doing this daily card with only three things per day
- 10:45And you can take that free training by going to simplyconvivial.com/organized,
- 10:51or you can find a link in the description below.
- 10:54It's a 45-minute free workshop all about how to choose those three things
- 10:59and how it works and why you should definitely try it to actually get
- 11:03more done by choosing just a top three
- 11:08You see, when that story in your head making you feel ashamed of your messy
- 11:14home is saying, "You're not good enough.
- 11:18The work you do isn't good enough," then that is a script
- 11:22that you're going to have to flip
- 11:25And that doesn't just mean contradicting it and saying,
- 11:27"No, actually everything's fine."
- 11:30Instead, you're going to look and say, "Look at what I did do today."
- 11:35There's always going to be more that you didn't do, but you're going to flip
- 11:40what you're noticing and notice what you did do, and not only what you didn't do.
- 11:45Then you say, "Tomorrow I'm gonna do more.
- 11:48Look, this work is making a difference.
- 11:50I can bring order out of chaos, even in just 10 minutes with that timer."
