- 0:23Speaker 1: on football, rugby, Halloween Park runs, beachy Head runs a
- 0:32Speaker 1: little story about how I was asked to referee a
- 0:35Speaker 1: seven year old's birthday football party. We've got no hockey
- 0:41Speaker 1: today because last week they had what they called a
- 0:43Speaker 1: slipped week, so there was no hockey played. But they've
- 0:45Speaker 1: got a full set of fixtures this week. Her special
- 0:51Speaker 1: guest today is Rachel Hayden from the Sports Trust, who'll
- 0:54Speaker 1: be telling us about some new netball developments and about
- 0:57Speaker 1: awards she's recently won, and lots of all as well.
- 1:08Speaker 1: So let's get a show on the road with a belter.
- 1:11Speaker 1: I always like to start the show with a belter,
- 1:14Speaker 1: you know what I mean? Okay, who remembers the film
- 1:18Speaker 1: Billy Elliot. What a cracking film. I loved it, you know.
- 1:24Speaker 1: I saw a click of it during the week and
- 1:27Speaker 1: I thought, I've got I've got to play some songs
- 1:29Speaker 1: from there. So sit back, get your dancing shoes on
- 1:33Speaker 1: and listen to this t Rex.
- 1:37Speaker 2: H You Love You Love, You Love.
- 2:09Speaker 1: But There. What a great track to start the show.
- 2:10Speaker 1: There we go and our guests was the dancing all
- 2:12Speaker 1: around the studio. They couldn't stop her. He was tap
- 2:15Speaker 1: tap dancing up to on tice tree. So this is
- 2:17Speaker 1: Kevin Daley on the Sports Verit Show and we are
- 2:20Speaker 1: joined today by Rachel Hayden. Hello Rachel, how are you?
- 2:23Speaker 3: Kevin? I'm very well, Thank you good.
- 2:25Speaker 1: Good, so lovely to see you now. Rachel. You are
- 2:28Speaker 1: part of the Sports Trust, but we're going to talk
- 2:31Speaker 1: about loads of things today. We're going to talk about
- 2:34Speaker 1: what goes on up the Sports Trust, what you're involved with,
- 2:37Speaker 1: and later on we're going to tell You're going to
- 2:39Speaker 1: tell us all about a little award. You you one,
- 2:42Speaker 1: aren't you am? Yeah? Good? So okay, where should we
- 2:44Speaker 1: start then? So what's let's start with what is your
- 2:48Speaker 1: role at the Sports Trust and what have you been
- 2:50Speaker 1: up to up there?
- 2:51Speaker 4: So I am now the chief operating Officer for the
- 2:55Speaker 4: Sports Trust. Come through the ranks if you liked. So,
- 2:57Speaker 4: was the Using Schools Partnership Project Manager, which is what
- 3:00Speaker 4: I won the award for, and I oversee the school's
- 3:05Speaker 4: team that most people be familiar with the Sports Trust. Locally,
- 3:09Speaker 4: we also operate the fifty one Skate Park three Hills
- 3:13Speaker 4: Sports Park and recently acquired the Folks and Sports Center.
- 3:17Speaker 1: All right, so you've got several hats to put on
- 3:20Speaker 1: in the morning when you leave home. Here, okay, so
- 3:24Speaker 1: now you're you're called it a CEO. You called a
- 3:28Speaker 1: coup ce double low And I saw the picked up
- 3:30Speaker 1: on that. What is it? What is a coup?
- 3:32Speaker 3: So it's chief operating officer or.
- 3:34Speaker 1: Chief ops chief ops.
- 3:36Speaker 3: Right, I don't have a little coup.
- 3:37Speaker 1: He don't sit in the corner in a little birds right,
- 3:41Speaker 1: So now I won my list here to talk about.
- 3:44Speaker 1: I've got something called and I must admit I haven't
- 3:47Speaker 1: heard of this one before. Coastal Cruisers. Yes, what is there?
- 3:51Speaker 4: So Christian Greenhouse, our marketing and Events and Bookings officer
- 3:56Speaker 4: many hats again collaborated with the Harbor This and they
- 4:02Speaker 4: gave us some funding to run some sessions down at
- 4:04Speaker 4: the Harbor Arm. They were skateboard sessions, so free sessions
- 4:08Speaker 4: for our young people just to have a free go,
- 4:11Speaker 4: you know, get on the skateboard, have some lessons by
- 4:13Speaker 4: some of our great coaches from the skate park. And
- 4:16Speaker 4: then after that they was invited up to the skate
- 4:18Speaker 4: park for more free sessions just to get more people
- 4:21Speaker 4: involved and accessible.
- 4:24Speaker 1: So because the cruising part is I wouldn't I didn't
- 4:26Speaker 1: know I expected to use you all be charging around
- 4:28Speaker 1: the car park in XL two's and things like that
- 4:32Speaker 1: promote to promote skateboarding. Yeah, so where did you do
- 4:36Speaker 1: it in the car park?
- 4:36Speaker 3: So it was on the actual the harbor arm. There's
- 4:38Speaker 3: like a ramp that goes up the harbor arm.
- 4:40Speaker 4: We just put some fencing around there, made up you know,
- 4:43Speaker 4: little parking there.
- 4:45Speaker 1: Yeah, and was it a success?
- 4:47Speaker 3: Very successful? Was it really really good?
- 4:49Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 4:49Speaker 4: Lots of young people in awful weather sometimes but really
- 4:52Speaker 4: really good. And then as soon as they'd finished there,
- 4:54Speaker 4: they'd gone to the park and we'd have them in
- 4:57Speaker 4: the park really really busy, really good.
- 4:58Speaker 1: Right. So these these youngsters that were attracted, were they
- 5:03Speaker 1: sort of, if you like, veterans of their fifty one
- 5:05Speaker 1: or were they brought brand new to the sport a mix?
- 5:08Speaker 4: Yeah, there were some that you know, come regularly. You'll
- 5:11Speaker 4: probably talk about it in a minute. But we've got
- 5:13Speaker 4: the Shred club that we run at the skate park,
- 5:15Speaker 4: so some of them are members for there. But yeah,
- 5:17Speaker 4: new ones, lots of new children that are probably a
- 5:21Speaker 4: bit scared to get on the skateboard.
- 5:22Speaker 1: So yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. And was it just like
- 5:25Speaker 1: a one off or did you do it every week?
- 5:27Speaker 4: It was a week I think it was about six weeks,
- 5:30Speaker 4: six sessions. It was all through the summer. It was
- 5:31Speaker 4: every Friday. So we run holiday clubs throughout the summer holidays. Yes,
- 5:36Speaker 4: most people will know from the sports just and this
- 5:38Speaker 4: is on the Friday when we don't run holiday clubs
- 5:41Speaker 4: and just more accessible sessions.
- 5:43Speaker 1: Okay, so I must admit that really did slip under
- 5:46Speaker 1: my rodar Rachel. So next time you have a coastal cruiser,
- 5:49Speaker 1: you better come and tell me. I might come down
- 5:50Speaker 1: and ever watch.
- 5:51Speaker 4: We'll be looking to do some more. So we had
- 5:53Speaker 4: s more collaboration with the Harbor Company. Perhaps some climbing
- 5:57Speaker 4: walls down there in the future, who knows.
- 5:59Speaker 1: Yeah great, yeah, right, So that's coastal cruisers now we have.
- 6:05Speaker 1: Now I've mentioned this several times on the half camps.
- 6:07Speaker 1: So let's talk about the holiday camps throughout the summer.
- 6:10Speaker 1: And there's there anything else coming up sort of half
- 6:13Speaker 1: term Christmas time.
- 6:14Speaker 4: So holiday camps are for six weeks of the year,
- 6:17Speaker 4: a government funding program, so it's for low income families
- 6:20Speaker 4: children receipt of free school meals. We run them for
- 6:23Speaker 4: four weeks over the summer holidays, a week at Easter
- 6:25Speaker 4: and a week at Christmas. So for the sports just staff,
- 6:28Speaker 4: we will be working the holiday camps twenty second, twenty
- 6:32Speaker 4: third and twenty fourth, so Christmas Eve and then the
- 6:34Speaker 4: second of January.
- 6:36Speaker 1: So I know, but just to explain to some of
- 6:39Speaker 1: the listeners, what is a holiday camp? What does it include?
- 6:41Speaker 1: What can the kids do?
- 6:42Speaker 3: So there's lots of things.
- 6:43Speaker 4: We have three different venues, so we have fifty one
- 6:46Speaker 4: skate Park, we have the Three Hills Sports Park, and
- 6:48Speaker 4: then we're also done at the Marsh Academy. Marsh Academy
- 6:51Speaker 4: and Three Hills are your multi sports academies, your footballs,
- 6:54Speaker 4: your hockey's, your golf's, yunet, balls, crickets and then the
- 7:00Speaker 4: fifty one skate Park.
- 7:01Speaker 3: They get a mixture of.
- 7:01Speaker 4: Skate boarding, scootering and climbing as part of the holiday.
- 7:06Speaker 4: Can't we have to deliver sessions around health, nutrition, talking
- 7:11Speaker 4: about the planet most of all making sure they will
- 7:14Speaker 4: get a hot meal every day.
- 7:15Speaker 1: Okay, so it's not just about like running around the
- 7:18Speaker 1: kids running around the gym, you know, they do sit down.
- 7:20Speaker 1: They have classes as well.
- 7:21Speaker 4: They I wouldn't say classes, it's not like your scale environment,
- 7:24Speaker 4: but they're structured. Yes, it's almost to keep them in
- 7:28Speaker 4: some sort of routine out of school. So they'll have
- 7:31Speaker 4: you know, forty five minute sessions. They'll come and have
- 7:33Speaker 4: a break, they have a little snack time. McDonald supports
- 7:37Speaker 4: us for snacks and give us a little fruit bags.
- 7:38Speaker 3: H yeah, really good.
- 7:40Speaker 4: Tesco supported us this year and gave us lots of
- 7:43Speaker 4: free bottles of water. So it's a really you know,
- 7:45Speaker 4: huge community program.
- 7:47Speaker 1: Is like this idea of this principle, is it like nationwide?
- 7:50Speaker 3: It's yeah, cross country?
- 7:52Speaker 1: Yeah yeah. So I mean these are the local McDonald's
- 7:55Speaker 1: or do the McDonald's sponsor the whole whole?
- 7:57Speaker 4: So McDonald's are a franchise. So the one that sponsors
- 7:59Speaker 4: Escape Park is the one in Sandgate Lanes.
- 8:02Speaker 1: Thanks. Yeah. Because McDonald's get a little bad press, you know,
- 8:06Speaker 1: I think about the the burghers and what's inside them
- 8:10Speaker 1: on that, but they are the under the radar. I mean,
- 8:12Speaker 1: there's a there's a place in London called the Ronald
- 8:16Speaker 1: McDonald Houses, you know, and they do wonderful work. They
- 8:19Speaker 1: put people up short term if their children have got
- 8:24Speaker 1: severe illnesses and they instead of traveling in and out
- 8:28Speaker 1: of London all day, they put them up for the
- 8:30Speaker 1: night and they don't charge them anything. Yeah, it's brilliant. Yeah,
- 8:33Speaker 1: oh good. It's glad to see McDonald's involved. And Tesco's Okay,
- 8:37Speaker 1: I mean they're a bigger franchise that's probably dropping the
- 8:40Speaker 1: ocean to them, but it's nice to have I think.
- 8:42Speaker 3: Yes and no.
- 8:42Speaker 4: The Tesco's chariton the mains supported us with the bottles
- 8:46Speaker 4: over the summer. Recently they the staff in Tesco's do
- 8:50Speaker 4: their own internal book club and they've just raised three
- 8:52Speaker 4: hundred and thirteen pounds and they've handed that over to
- 8:55Speaker 4: us at Three Hills to run after school clubs, so
- 8:58Speaker 4: children that want to come over and you know, to
- 8:59Speaker 4: give them a drinking a snack if they're there.
- 9:02Speaker 1: And that's from the staff, is it? It is, right,
- 9:04Speaker 1: So it's not from like it's the staff in poc.
- 9:07Speaker 4: Or No, it's the community work they do. Lots of
- 9:10Speaker 4: you will probably know that they did the little blue
- 9:12Speaker 4: chips that you go yeah yeah, so I think we're
- 9:15Speaker 4: coming up for one of those in the next quarter.
- 9:17Speaker 4: So anybody, what's brilliant help us there, put your little
- 9:20Speaker 4: blue chips in.
- 9:21Speaker 1: Yeah, so you did tell me just now, but just
- 9:25Speaker 1: repeat what's coming up at Christmas.
- 9:27Speaker 4: For the Christmas session, so that will be the twenty second,
- 9:31Speaker 4: twenty third, twenty fourth of December and the second of January.
- 9:35Speaker 4: All the children that receive free school meals will get
- 9:38Speaker 4: a voucher from their school that allows them to go
- 9:40Speaker 4: on onto a like a site, a booking system that's
- 9:43Speaker 4: provided by the school as well. We can't do that
- 9:45Speaker 4: for them. It does come by the school and they
- 9:47Speaker 4: can book the places for free. It's five hours a day,
- 9:50Speaker 4: it has a hot meal included, access to all of
- 9:53Speaker 4: the sports that we deliver.
- 9:54Speaker 1: And is the uptake pretty big?
- 9:56Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 9:56Speaker 4: Really for we have across the three venues, two hundred
- 9:59Speaker 4: and sixty plays. This is a day which you know
- 10:02Speaker 4: might sound great. That's obviously, you know, kind of sad
- 10:05Speaker 4: reflection on really on where we are. Yeah, but you know,
- 10:09Speaker 4: it is, it is there accessible. Still lots of families
- 10:12Speaker 4: don't know it's there, so.
- 10:13Speaker 1: Really you know, okay, so in future families so looking
- 10:16Speaker 1: out for the half camps and they have a word
- 10:20Speaker 1: at school preps about them. Yeah, okay, So moving on,
- 10:23Speaker 1: So we still staying with skaters, young skaters. So you've
- 10:27Speaker 1: got somebody that's making their way we.
- 10:30Speaker 4: Have, yes, so young Ashley, her name is As. She
- 10:34Speaker 4: actually came through the half camps originally. Yes, So we've
- 10:38Speaker 4: seen her from a young age and using the skate
- 10:40Speaker 4: park with her family and she's kind of grew up
- 10:44Speaker 4: with us in the skate park and she has just
- 10:47Speaker 4: made it through what's called the pipeline, which is a
- 10:49Speaker 4: skateboard GP pathway.
- 10:51Speaker 1: It's so cool to what's white line pipeline. Yeah, okay, yeah.
- 10:56Speaker 4: Yeah, so she's now on the Olympic Pathway so to speak.
- 10:59Speaker 4: So she's incredible. Yeah, and she's now got a little
- 11:03Speaker 4: job with us at the skate park. So we also
- 11:04Speaker 4: provide employability options for those.
- 11:07Speaker 3: Yes, it's really good.
- 11:09Speaker 1: How does she get picked up on that? Do you
- 11:10Speaker 1: have to kind of put her forward for this?
- 11:13Speaker 3: She does a lot herself.
- 11:14Speaker 4: Yes, she you know recently had I think she was
- 11:17Speaker 4: looking at a go fun page. They have to, you know,
- 11:19Speaker 4: like any sport, you know, you have to do a
- 11:20Speaker 4: lot of fundraising yourself. We do what we can on
- 11:23Speaker 4: our socials to try and highlight, you know, the effort
- 11:25Speaker 4: that she's putting in. We've also had skateboard gb come
- 11:28Speaker 4: down themselves and put on what we call jams at
- 11:31Speaker 4: the park and you know through competitions she's been picked
- 11:35Speaker 4: up brilliant.
- 11:35Speaker 1: Oh well, you have to keep us informed on that one,
- 11:37Speaker 1: because exiting be the first time if we've heard anybody
- 11:40Speaker 1: from this area like making it. I didn't even know.
- 11:44Speaker 1: I think it was last year, wasn't it skateboarding was
- 11:47Speaker 1: the Olympic sport was exactly.
- 11:49Speaker 3: Yes, there's Tay Hunningham.
- 11:50Speaker 4: He's fairly local, not focused, but he's local. He uses
- 11:53Speaker 4: the park and he's just been on the last Olympics.
- 11:57Speaker 1: So yeah, where do these people come from? And this
- 12:00Speaker 1: town is amazing. I've been doing this job on trying
- 12:03Speaker 1: to find unsung heroes in sport and there you go,
- 12:06Speaker 1: there two of them that slipped under my radar. Yeah.
- 12:10Speaker 1: So anybody out there there's got any youngsters that are
- 12:13Speaker 1: really good at sport and perhaps they're not getting the
- 12:15Speaker 1: publicity they deserve, then please get in touch. In fact,
- 12:18Speaker 1: having said that, I've been in touch with a young
- 12:21Speaker 1: powerlifter who I'm going to have a chat with or
- 12:24Speaker 1: tell you about next week. But that's the story. That
- 12:27Speaker 1: used to be my next door neighbor when he was
- 12:29Speaker 1: only little and I saw a picture of him at
- 12:31Speaker 1: the other day at the Southeast is Southeast England Powerlifting Championships.
- 12:36Speaker 1: Oh my word is a giant. But it just goes
- 12:39Speaker 1: to show that people are out there and if you
- 12:42Speaker 1: want to get any recognition, please come and tell me. Right,
- 12:45Speaker 1: so tell us a little bit about what you mean
- 12:50Speaker 1: by they reached the record number of children in our
- 12:53Speaker 1: schools competitions.
- 12:55Speaker 3: And in the schools program.
- 12:56Speaker 4: So the Sports does Schools Team, Mark Hinton, Sarah Green,
- 13:00Speaker 4: Cavan Risby.
- 13:01Speaker 3: They deliver our schools program.
- 13:04Speaker 4: We have a brochure full of sports that we go
- 13:06Speaker 4: into schools and deliver and I think last year, you know,
- 13:10Speaker 4: looking at our data, we reached over sixty thousand young
- 13:12Speaker 4: people opportunities, which is huge.
- 13:16Speaker 1: Yeah. Well, I don't think people realize just what the
- 13:19Speaker 1: Sports Trust do and how far they reach out, And yeah,
- 13:23Speaker 1: we need to pass on this message. So really ever
- 13:26Speaker 1: listened back to this podcast and find out what's going
- 13:29Speaker 1: on in our town. Right, We're going to take a
- 13:31Speaker 1: little break now I play some more music, but we're
- 13:34Speaker 1: going to come back and talk about something new going
- 13:36Speaker 1: on in the Folks and the Netball League. I do believe, yes,
- 13:39Speaker 1: exciting all right, Okay, so we were starting with the
- 13:42Speaker 1: Billy Elliot theme is another track I absolutely love. I
- 13:45Speaker 1: just remember him kicking. He was angry. Some people used
- 13:48Speaker 1: to call it the Angry Song, where this little clip
- 13:51Speaker 1: we had these little boots on and he was kicking
- 13:53Speaker 1: hell out of everywhere. So listen to this at a
- 13:54Speaker 1: town called Mallets from the jam. Never go with the
- 14:28Speaker 1: jam at a town called Malice. And there's no stop
- 14:29Speaker 1: in this, Rachel, She's been kicking ella out of the studio, honestly,
- 14:32Speaker 1: can't dare Rachel? Right, Okay, so we are now going
- 14:38Speaker 1: to discuss netball. Now. I know you're involved with netball
- 14:42Speaker 1: or you were involved with netball, and I do like
- 14:45Speaker 1: to keep tabs on what's going on in the netball scene.
- 14:48Speaker 1: So I do believe you've taken a bit of a
- 14:50Speaker 1: backward step. But tell us what your role is the
- 14:53Speaker 1: Netball League.
- 14:54Speaker 4: I've taken a step back as I'm probably too well
- 14:56Speaker 4: to play, if the truth be known. But I'm still
- 15:00Speaker 4: chair of the Folks in the Netball League over at
- 15:02Speaker 4: Folks in Three Hills, our home ground.
- 15:04Speaker 1: There, and that has become really since since you had
- 15:09Speaker 1: that great fundraising exercise and you've got all the courts
- 15:12Speaker 1: change around, and I've seen it and keep kept an
- 15:15Speaker 1: eye on it, and it has grown and grown and grown.
- 15:18Speaker 1: So now I do believe he's outgrown the Three Hills
- 15:21Speaker 1: or is expanded, not outgrown. But yeah, yeah, tell us
- 15:25Speaker 1: about that.
- 15:25Speaker 4: I think you know, since the Roses England Roses have
- 15:28Speaker 4: been so successful, Grass for Its netball has had a
- 15:31Speaker 4: huge surge. You know, it's really popular women and girls.
- 15:35Speaker 4: We've seen a lot of growth over at Three Hills,
- 15:38Speaker 4: especially our league on a Wednesday night there are you know,
- 15:41Speaker 4: we don't have enough space to accommodate the teams that
- 15:44Speaker 4: are looking to join, which is really exciting, hard work,
- 15:49Speaker 4: and so we are have been looking for a new venue.
- 15:52Speaker 3: We're an additional venue.
- 15:53Speaker 1: Not yeah, and have you found that we have? Wow? Yes?
- 15:56Speaker 1: Is it? Are you allowed to tell us? Is this
- 15:59Speaker 1: like a f No?
- 16:01Speaker 4: So the Turner Academy, the Turner Free School over in
- 16:04Speaker 4: Sherton have kindly offered to hire their network corts out
- 16:08Speaker 4: to us on a Wednesday, so it'd be the same evening.
- 16:11Speaker 4: They've just painted the lines, et cetera on there and
- 16:14Speaker 4: we've been over and had a look, so really exciting.
- 16:17Speaker 4: It won't be until probably next summer because we're halfway
- 16:20Speaker 4: through our Winter league.
- 16:20Speaker 1: Now right, brilliant, So so you'll be looking the winter
- 16:25Speaker 1: League finishes and you'll be looking for new teams for
- 16:27Speaker 1: the summer.
- 16:27Speaker 3: Yes, we will.
- 16:28Speaker 4: We We've already had interests from four teams, so we
- 16:32Speaker 4: know we've got a minimum of four teams which we
- 16:33Speaker 4: will look to move over there. But you know, anybody
- 16:37Speaker 4: that's looking to bring a team in would like to
- 16:39Speaker 4: join the league, get in touch with.
- 16:40Speaker 1: Us, right, And are these teams local or are they
- 16:43Speaker 1: a bit out of out of town.
- 16:45Speaker 3: We have a mixture of teams.
- 16:46Speaker 4: We have obviously focused in teams, ash Ford teams, Canterbury teams.
- 16:50Speaker 4: I think there's a Sandwich team, possibly Dover.
- 16:53Speaker 1: Yeah, I do believe Dover got a league, haven't they
- 16:56Speaker 1: they do.
- 16:57Speaker 4: Dover's got a league, ash Ford's got a league, Sandwich,
- 16:59Speaker 4: Canterbury there all round. So what we try to do
- 17:01Speaker 4: is make sure we don't do the same evening, right,
- 17:03Speaker 4: so you know, the girls that are playing and the
- 17:04Speaker 4: ladies that are playing want to play more than one evening.
- 17:07Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean this is great for the sport. I
- 17:11Speaker 1: had Angie in Angie.
- 17:12Speaker 3: Baits yes and umpire secretary that's.
- 17:15Speaker 1: Right, and we were just saying that. I mean, I
- 17:19Speaker 1: don't know. Growing up, it used to be the girls
- 17:23Speaker 1: did the netball. That was about it, wasn't it. Yes,
- 17:26Speaker 1: But there's hardly any netburn schools at all now.
- 17:28Speaker 3: Yeah, it's really quite sad.
- 17:30Speaker 4: Really, the netballs after netbull schools run by the curriculum,
- 17:34Speaker 4: so they have to deliver so many sports across the year.
- 17:36Speaker 4: So netboll is only delivered in one term or two
- 17:39Speaker 4: terms normally between now and Christmas, and then it will
- 17:42Speaker 4: swap and change over to a different sport after Christmas.
- 17:45Speaker 1: Much of the whole sporting world has become bigger as well,
- 17:47Speaker 1: hasn't it. I mean back in the day there was
- 17:50Speaker 1: just like the boys did football cricket and the girls
- 17:51Speaker 1: did netborne rounders perhaps and that was it. But now
- 17:55Speaker 1: there's all sorts out there, wasn't there There are so many.
- 17:57Speaker 1: I mean, Sarah Green comes in, she tells me about
- 18:00Speaker 1: the sports she delivers all over the ship way and
- 18:03Speaker 1: it's great to hear. But if someone likes if likes
- 18:07Speaker 1: netball or hockey, and they need to that they need
- 18:11Speaker 1: to be channeled into somewhere, don't they Because if they
- 18:14Speaker 1: if they pick up on it at one of these
- 18:15Speaker 1: sessions and then it's taken away, they need somewhere to go.
- 18:20Speaker 1: So the Sports Trust is a is a great thing
- 18:24Speaker 1: for the sports that, if you like, are not played
- 18:26Speaker 1: in school so much. But they've got an outlet for
- 18:29Speaker 1: him and.
- 18:29Speaker 4: They Yeah, So the sports just work is to go
- 18:31Speaker 4: and deliver sports in schools and then where we can,
- 18:34Speaker 4: we'll deliver, you know, share the pathway outside of school.
- 18:37Speaker 4: So you know, we're put in after school clubs and
- 18:39Speaker 4: then we'll try and link them with all the clubs
- 18:41Speaker 4: in the community. You know, you've got a number of
- 18:43Speaker 4: them at Three Hills. Your hockey's, your football's, your netballs.
- 18:45Speaker 4: We run a youth section and the folks to netball,
- 18:48Speaker 4: so you know there's a pathway there.
- 18:50Speaker 1: I must ask you this about netball always makes me
- 18:53Speaker 1: chuckle with this. I don't give it embarrassing it. I mean,
- 18:56Speaker 1: do you fancy being a floater? Explained that one?
- 19:05Speaker 4: I mean most netballers will know, but yeah, floaters, Yeah,
- 19:09Speaker 4: it's it's your pathway into netball. So we have what's
- 19:12Speaker 4: called a floaters list, and it's ladies returning to netball
- 19:16Speaker 4: that are not quite ready to join a team, or
- 19:18Speaker 4: if they're coming back from injury and they just want
- 19:20Speaker 4: to you know, get some practice in. They join off
- 19:22Speaker 4: floaters list and they make themselves available each week.
- 19:25Speaker 1: Yeah that's right. I mean when I first heard it,
- 19:29Speaker 1: I've said this to Angie. I just a straight away
- 19:32Speaker 1: fancy something bobbing around in the harbor. But do you
- 19:37Speaker 1: know what there was what's his name, Bradley Walsh was
- 19:41Speaker 1: on the on the doing the chase a few weeks
- 19:44Speaker 1: ago and this question come up? What is a floaters? Yeah? Yeah,
- 19:52Speaker 1: So okay, ladies, if you want to be a floater,
- 19:54Speaker 1: then just get in touch with Rachel. Right, So anything
- 19:59Speaker 1: else to say about netbil before we passed on to
- 20:01Speaker 1: your to your moment.
- 20:03Speaker 4: You know, if you're interested in Netbil, thy just you know,
- 20:05Speaker 4: look at it's on Three Hills, It's on you know
- 20:08Speaker 4: folks in Netball League's website, it's on the Facebook pages.
- 20:11Speaker 4: We've got a number of sessions coming up back to Netbull.
- 20:13Speaker 4: We've got a hockey tournament this Saturday, Halloween hockey tournament.
- 20:16Speaker 1: Yes, I did hear about that.
- 20:18Speaker 4: Yeah, fancy dress is canpulsory understand, and men are also playing,
- 20:23Speaker 4: so it's a mixed tournament. So that's this Saturday ninete
- 20:26Speaker 4: or three at Three Hills. Okay, so anybody passing.
- 20:29Speaker 1: I might pop up. I've had enough dressing up. Was Halloween.
- 20:33Speaker 1: I've dressed that was a skeleton for two Halloween part runs.
- 20:35Speaker 1: I'm hoping to talk about that later, but I definitely
- 20:37Speaker 1: I'll get a chance the way things are go so right,
- 20:41Speaker 1: So yeah, it's it's it's I have a sports trust
- 20:44Speaker 1: or folks in NETBORB League Facebook pages. Isn't it as
- 20:47Speaker 1: immediate point of contact? Yeah? Okay, never going onto the
- 20:51Speaker 1: big thing that I have managed to get you in
- 20:54Speaker 1: the studio for once again. It was great to see it, Rachel.
- 20:58Speaker 1: On my Facebook page, there was a picture of you
- 21:00Speaker 1: receiving an award at an awards evening and I know
- 21:03Speaker 1: it's kind of putting you on the spot because if
- 21:05Speaker 1: you're talking about you now, but just tell us about
- 21:08Speaker 1: the award, why you won it at the competition that
- 21:10Speaker 1: was out there, and did you know he was going
- 21:12Speaker 1: to win it? Who proposed you? Just give us the
- 21:15Speaker 1: whole story.
- 21:17Speaker 3: It was quite funny.
- 21:18Speaker 4: I received an email to say that I'd been nominated
- 21:21Speaker 4: and I had won an award, and I actually sent
- 21:24Speaker 4: it out to my team. I thought it was a
- 21:25Speaker 4: scam email, so I sent it around. You know, does
- 21:28Speaker 4: anybody know what this is?
- 21:30Speaker 1: Is it?
- 21:30Speaker 4: You know? Is it a really would And I actually
- 21:31Speaker 4: thought it was for the team. You know, I'd never
- 21:33Speaker 4: expect to win, you know, something myself because we work
- 21:36Speaker 4: as a team. And one of my colleagues, Christians, said oh, yes,
- 21:40Speaker 4: that was me. I nominated you for that, so you know,
- 21:43Speaker 4: I kind of it started from there, and it's been
- 21:45Speaker 4: really lovely, really really lovely. It's not why we do,
- 21:48Speaker 4: you know, the things we do, but to be recognized,
- 21:50Speaker 4: for you to be recognized, yeah, it was really nice.
- 21:53Speaker 1: So tell us what what was the name of the award?
- 21:56Speaker 4: Well, I didn't know until I got there, so I
- 21:58Speaker 4: knew I'd won an award from Kent Well Being Mental
- 22:02Speaker 4: well Being, Mental Health and well Being I think the
- 22:04Speaker 4: actual title is. So it wasn't until the evening when
- 22:06Speaker 4: I got there that I knew what it was and
- 22:08Speaker 4: it was in the brochure.
- 22:09Speaker 3: So the award was a Youth Project Award.
- 22:11Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, so I mean where did you go to
- 22:15Speaker 1: get it?
- 22:16Speaker 4: It was at Ashford International Hotel. So it's a nice
- 22:18Speaker 4: sparkley dressing up event.
- 22:21Speaker 3: Yeah, really really.
- 22:22Speaker 1: Lovely okay, and did you go up with members of
- 22:25Speaker 1: the team?
- 22:25Speaker 4: It was only me yeah, so it was just myself
- 22:28Speaker 4: that won the award, you know, sort of for the
- 22:31Speaker 4: sports just but with me.
- 22:32Speaker 3: So me and my husband went over.
- 22:34Speaker 1: And was this like a big was it county wide
- 22:37Speaker 1: or nationwide?
- 22:38Speaker 3: It's I think it's it's south east.
- 22:41Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, yes, So, as I understand it, there were
- 22:44Speaker 4: over three hundred nominations across all of the awards and
- 22:48Speaker 4: there were a fifty two award winners, which I was
- 22:51Speaker 4: one of.
- 22:51Speaker 1: Oh brilliant. That is fantastic, and it's good for you.
- 22:54Speaker 1: I'm pleased for you, Rachel, really am, because although you
- 22:57Speaker 1: do and as a lot of people in this town
- 22:59Speaker 1: doas trust and at sports clubs, they do put a
- 23:03Speaker 1: lot of effort into what they do because they're passionate
- 23:05Speaker 1: about it and it's nice to be rewarded and recognized. Good.
- 23:11Speaker 1: Really please for you. So what's next? Then, that's the
- 23:16Speaker 1: other thing. What's next? You've got any new projects? Oh,
- 23:19Speaker 1: you're not allowed to talk about them.
- 23:21Speaker 4: I think you know, it's just carrying on, continuing with
- 23:23Speaker 4: what we do, always striving to be better at what
- 23:26Speaker 4: we do. You know, we always looking out for the community,
- 23:30Speaker 4: aren't we. So what does a community need? How can
- 23:31Speaker 4: we help our community? We do lots of programs already,
- 23:35Speaker 4: you know, like I mentioned the shred Club at f
- 23:37Speaker 4: fifty one Skate Park. That's the you know, if anybody
- 23:40Speaker 4: that doesn't know about that, anybody, all of the schools
- 23:42Speaker 4: that we work with, can join fifty one Skate Park
- 23:47Speaker 4: for a pound a month, so it's a twelve pounds
- 23:49Speaker 4: a year subscription. They can get it through their school.
- 23:51Speaker 4: So anybody it's not sure, or they can come and
- 23:53Speaker 4: ask us. But that was a setup from the Rogers
- 23:56Speaker 4: de Hahnt Trust. When fifty one open to that, we
- 23:59Speaker 4: know we kind of look into build on that. We
- 24:01Speaker 4: do our littlest Athletes at three Hills, which is for
- 24:04Speaker 4: under fives. That again, that's a funded program that's free
- 24:08Speaker 4: for families to bring the little ones across on a
- 24:10Speaker 4: Wednesday morning at three years. Our school's programs, you're growing
- 24:14Speaker 4: the half camps that we do. Yeah, we're doing lots already.
- 24:19Speaker 1: You go, yeah, it's good. It's just so encouraging to hear,
- 24:24Speaker 1: and I think it's just we need to get the
- 24:28Speaker 1: word out there. Really. That's all I can say is
- 24:29Speaker 1: that some people though the Sports Trust is there, and
- 24:33Speaker 1: some people don't know what they do. So I'm hoping
- 24:35Speaker 1: this interview will have some impact and perhaps appearance ears
- 24:40Speaker 1: will prick up and say oh okay, yeah yeah.
- 24:42Speaker 4: And you know I always forget our active fifties over
- 24:45Speaker 4: at Three Hills. You know, it's not just all about
- 24:46Speaker 4: the young people. We want to look after everybody.
- 24:48Speaker 1: After the old ones.
- 24:49Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 24:51Speaker 1: Right, Rachel has been lovely having you in. Is it
- 24:53Speaker 1: before you go? Is anything we've forgotten you Just make
- 24:56Speaker 1: sure we don't want to. We don't want you to
- 24:58Speaker 1: get back to the office and say you didn't mention.
- 25:01Speaker 4: The so you know I will get told of Yeah,
- 25:05Speaker 4: I think you know. Obviously I've mentioned the netball tournament
- 25:07Speaker 4: this weekend. We've got a jam at the skate park
- 25:10Speaker 4: on the eighth of November. Anybody that fancies a jam
- 25:13Speaker 4: that skateboarding, come along, have a look online, get yourself
- 25:15Speaker 4: booked in if you want to have a go.
- 25:17Speaker 3: That's really exciting. I think you know I covered everything.
- 25:24Speaker 1: You won on award, Yeah, so efficiently. Well, Rachel, thank
- 25:29Speaker 1: you so much once again for coming in. And I
- 25:31Speaker 1: hope this interview has really worked and people can listen
- 25:34Speaker 1: to it when it's you know, goes out as a
- 25:39Speaker 1: podcast and perhaps it will prick their ears out and think, oh,
- 25:43Speaker 1: do you know what I didn't realize that was there?
- 25:44Speaker 1: I didn't I didn't know about that. That's what I
- 25:46Speaker 1: want to hear.
- 25:47Speaker 4: And anybody that wants to come and join us, you know,
- 25:49Speaker 4: help us out, volunteers.
- 25:51Speaker 1: We'd love to have volunteers.
- 25:53Speaker 4: I know it's people's time, but you know, anybody wants
- 25:56Speaker 4: to get involved and come and help us out, look
- 25:58Speaker 4: us up.
- 25:59Speaker 3: You send me an email.
- 26:01Speaker 1: Yeah, you. Volunteering is great because it does open a
- 26:04Speaker 1: lot of pathways. As you said, I love that. I
- 26:07Speaker 1: love that word pathways. I start using every show now.
- 26:09Speaker 1: But it does open a lot of doors actually, and
- 26:11Speaker 1: it could lead to things that you didn't know about.
- 26:12Speaker 1: You go along, volunteer, get to know people, put yourself
- 26:15Speaker 1: about a bit and for the right reasons, and you know,
- 26:19Speaker 1: you don't you don't know what it could lead to.
- 26:21Speaker 1: So Rachel, what can I say? Brilliant, thank you so
- 26:24Speaker 1: much for coming and enjoy the rest of your busy
- 26:26Speaker 1: day and okay, we're going to play another song now.
- 26:29Speaker 1: This is another song from Billy Elliot who remembers this one.
- 26:32Speaker 1: This is a London Calling, London Calling there from the clash.
- 27:08Speaker 1: It's been a great morning, isn't it. I mean, that
- 27:10Speaker 1: was a brilliant interview. I love that and they're so enthusiastic,
- 27:14Speaker 1: people like Rachel and people from the Sports Trust. Okay,
- 27:18Speaker 1: so we haven't got much time now as usual, but
- 27:22Speaker 1: so we're going to crack on with some football news
- 27:24Speaker 1: now then, folks and the Victor are certainly on a
- 27:27Speaker 1: roll this season. Last Saturday they beat Burgess Hill for
- 27:30Speaker 1: one away in the first round proper of the f
- 27:33Speaker 1: A Trophy, picking up three thousand pounds. I'm sure that
- 27:36Speaker 1: please the chairman. So now the fixtures come thick and fast,
- 27:39Speaker 1: games every Saturday and Tuesday throughout November and most of December.
- 27:43Speaker 1: Tuesday evening though, well, listen to this, there's me saying
- 27:46Speaker 1: they're on a roll. There was an ax and away
- 27:49Speaker 1: fixture against Hashtag United and they lost to to one,
- 27:52Speaker 1: the first time they've lost all season, to be fair,
- 27:55Speaker 1: and the manager, Jay Songlers said, well, it did have
- 27:58Speaker 1: to happen sometime, didn't it now hashtag United. They're a
- 28:02Speaker 1: funny ol team. They've got hardly any sort of through
- 28:06Speaker 1: the Gates supporters, but they've got a massive social media falling.
- 28:10Speaker 1: They ground share with Averley, which meant a trip up
- 28:12Speaker 1: along the A thirteen into Essex. But then on Saturday
- 28:16Speaker 1: Biller Ricky, who are eighteenth, make the trip from Ssex
- 28:19Speaker 1: to chair and Road. Meanwhile, on Monday the drawer was
- 28:23Speaker 1: made for the second round of the FA Trophy and
- 28:25Speaker 1: at last in Victor have a home drawer. The game
- 28:28Speaker 1: is scheduled for Saturday, the fifteenth November against AFC Totten
- 28:33Speaker 1: from Hampshire, who are currently fifth in the National League
- 28:36Speaker 1: South One Division above in Victor. So it's a very
- 28:39Speaker 1: very tough game. But please bear in mind that in
- 28:41Speaker 1: Victor have already beaten two teams in that league. They've
- 28:44Speaker 1: beaten Maidstone and Horsham. So tuned in Saturday between ten
- 28:48Speaker 1: and eleven, when our man Ady will be in the
- 28:50Speaker 1: chair telling us about the four to one victory against
- 28:53Speaker 1: Burgess Hill and the two one defeat against Avery as
- 28:57Speaker 1: he was at both the games. Meanwhile, slipped into relegation
- 29:02Speaker 1: zone in the Southern Counties East Football League better known
- 29:06Speaker 1: as the Skeffold League after a three nail home defeat
- 29:09Speaker 1: against Tunbridge Welles and the fans are not happy. They
- 29:13Speaker 1: went again on Tuesday night in the Skeffold Challenge Cup
- 29:16Speaker 1: second round away against Staplehurst Monarchs, the game ending in
- 29:19Speaker 1: a much needed for Neil victory, so I think that
- 29:22Speaker 1: put a little bit of a smile on their faces.
- 29:25Speaker 1: Saturday is back to the league with an away fixture
- 29:27Speaker 1: against seventh place Holmesdale. Then the following week I would
- 29:30Speaker 1: say it's the toughest game of the season so far.
- 29:34Speaker 1: It's the second round of the Favars at home against
- 29:37Speaker 1: Burnham FC, who are currently top of the Combined County's
- 29:40Speaker 1: Premier League North and will travel down from near Slough
- 29:44Speaker 1: in Buckinghamshire moving on to the NRG Kent County League.
- 29:49Speaker 4: Now.
- 29:50Speaker 1: It was a good day for our teams. Hawkinstown traveled
- 29:53Speaker 1: to Dartford to play Fleet Down United and beat them
- 29:55Speaker 1: to nil, keeping them in third place, and New Romney
- 29:59Speaker 1: were involved in a se Evan Gold thriller, making their
- 30:01Speaker 1: journey to Southeast London worthwhile, where they beat Meridian by
- 30:04Speaker 1: four goals to three. Next Saturday's fixture sees the earliest
- 30:08Speaker 1: start times as the clocks have gone back the New
- 30:10Speaker 1: Romney who are thirteenth now they kick off at two
- 30:13Speaker 1: pm at home to kings Hill who are fourth, so
- 30:16Speaker 1: that's a tough one. But Hawkins were playing away under
- 30:19Speaker 1: lights first on Tuesday evening against Minster at the home
- 30:22Speaker 1: of Margate FC at Hartsdown Park. Unfortunately the game I
- 30:26Speaker 1: don't know why I'm there, but they lost six to two.
- 30:28Speaker 1: Coming up this Saturday, they've got three pm kickoff against
- 30:31Speaker 1: Kent United who are using Glebe FC's ground. Glee played
- 30:36Speaker 1: their games away in the Skeffol League at Chiselhurst near Bromley.
- 30:40Speaker 1: No game for Hawkins Town Reserves on Saturday as there's
- 30:43Speaker 1: an odd number of teams in the division. There's nine
- 30:46Speaker 1: to be exact. That's the Ashford and District League Division One.
- 30:49Speaker 1: But they're back in action this Saturday, first November against
- 30:52Speaker 1: Bromley Green with a two o'clock kickoff in the Ashford
- 30:55Speaker 1: Premier Division. New Romney Reserves had they had a six
- 30:58Speaker 1: goal thriller, drawing three three all at home to Smarden.
- 31:02Speaker 1: Next victure I can find for them is on the
- 31:04Speaker 1: eighth of November when they're at home against Faversham Athletic
- 31:08Speaker 1: in the Kent Junior be Cup Folks and in Victor
- 31:11Speaker 1: Disability Team. They put out a much chained side against
- 31:14Speaker 1: Appledore Veterans and gifted their opponents three goals. They finally
- 31:19Speaker 1: lost the game six to three in Victor's goals coming
- 31:21Speaker 1: from Jordan Burton, Victor Tillage and Harry Lawer. Manager Garrett
- 31:26Speaker 1: Wilson was pleased to with the second half performance, but
- 31:30Speaker 1: not with the way they were given away goals. On Sunday, November,
- 31:33Speaker 1: the second at Faversham is another day of action in
- 31:36Speaker 1: the Kent Disability Football League tournament. Then on Sunday, the
- 31:39Speaker 1: ninth of November, it's a full eleven a side game
- 31:42Speaker 1: against Tyler Hill at Littlebourn Recreation Ground with the two
- 31:46Speaker 1: pm kickoff, So good luck to Garrant and the boys.
- 31:48Speaker 1: In the fourthcoming games, Folks and the Victor Ladies were
- 31:52Speaker 1: on the new artificial pitch for the first time against
- 31:54Speaker 1: deal Town and this sounds like a bit of a
- 31:56Speaker 1: thriller as well. They went in two nil up at halftime,
- 32:00Speaker 1: deal pulled it back to two all. However, Folks have
- 32:02Speaker 1: scored again in the eighty eighth minute in what turned
- 32:06Speaker 1: out to be the winner by Charlie Kerrey. There we go,
- 32:09Speaker 1: Charlie Carey, What on Charlie. The Ladies play again on Sunday,
- 32:12Speaker 1: the second November, once again at home, this time against
- 32:15Speaker 1: Faversham with a two pm kickoff. Okay, we're gonna have
- 32:19Speaker 1: a little bit of music now, and this is the
- 32:20Speaker 1: Coral and in the morning from two thousand and five,
- 32:36Speaker 1: there the Coral and in the morning. And talking of Coral,
- 32:43Speaker 1: in a couple of weeks time, I'm off to Coral
- 32:45Speaker 1: Bay in Cyprus. Yes, have I told you that I
- 32:48Speaker 1: spent a will before? I'll go a few more times. Okay,
- 32:51Speaker 1: so let's cut out the chit chat bit of rugby news.
- 32:54Speaker 1: Well I must have been. I couldn't find any fixtures
- 32:56Speaker 1: for folks in rugby club for last weekend, so I'm
- 32:59Speaker 1: obviously looking in the wrong places. Both the first and
- 33:02Speaker 1: the second fifteen's played, but not in the league. The
- 33:05Speaker 1: first fifteen had a massive seventy one points to five
- 33:08Speaker 1: victory against Maidstone in the Papa John's Cup and the
- 33:11Speaker 1: seconds beat Thanet forty three to twenty two in the
- 33:14Speaker 1: Kent Shield. Now I found fixtures for the eighth November.
- 33:18Speaker 1: The first fifteen are at home to Beckenham and the
- 33:20Speaker 1: seconds are away to Gravesend. So I do my best
- 33:23Speaker 1: to find out if there's anything happening this Saturday. The
- 33:26Speaker 1: ladies certainly have a game a schedule for Sunday the
- 33:28Speaker 1: ninth November. That's the way to Thane Wanderers. And as
- 33:31Speaker 1: I said last week, it's a very positive start to
- 33:34Speaker 1: the season up there from all the teams at the
- 33:36Speaker 1: Folks and Rugby Club. The first team are fourth out
- 33:39Speaker 1: of eleven teams and the second team are top of
- 33:43Speaker 1: the league, also out of eleven teams. And now forget
- 33:46Speaker 1: there's a big bonfire night up there on the actual
- 33:49Speaker 1: fifth of November, so check that out. Go to the
- 33:52Speaker 1: Folks and Rugby Club Facebook page and there's a link
- 33:55Speaker 1: there to the website and all the information is on there.
- 33:59Speaker 1: Now I must get this one, and I'll be in
- 34:00Speaker 1: trouble if I don't talk about this. During the week
- 34:03Speaker 1: I faced a real tough sporty challenge. It was Missus
- 34:06Speaker 1: Ferry's grandson Brody. It was his seventh birthday and I
- 34:10Speaker 1: was asked to take charge of ten seven year olds
- 34:13Speaker 1: at a football party. And I must admit I was
- 34:15Speaker 1: a little bit out for my comfort zone. When it
- 34:19Speaker 1: started off quietly enough. I split them up into two teams,
- 34:22Speaker 1: Arsenal versus Chelsea, and we did a couple of dribbling
- 34:25Speaker 1: exercises and then a penalty shootout, and then there was
- 34:29Speaker 1: a drinks break, and then we had a five a
- 34:31Speaker 1: side game. It was all going to playing so far well.
- 34:34Speaker 1: When the game started. The ball was flying about all
- 34:37Speaker 1: over plays all over the place as the boys became
- 34:40Speaker 1: more and more excited, and at one point I produced
- 34:44Speaker 1: a yellow card and showed it to the birthday boy, Brody.
- 34:48Speaker 1: But it was a really soft challenge. But I had
- 34:50Speaker 1: to get that yellow card in and you should have
- 34:53Speaker 1: seen his face. I took him to one side and
- 34:55Speaker 1: told him not to worry. I was only a bit
- 34:57Speaker 1: of fun. I wasn't going to report him. Look on
- 35:00Speaker 1: his face. I just wish I had a camera for
- 35:02Speaker 1: that very split moment. What me referee. I never touched
- 35:05Speaker 1: him anyway. A little while later, his big sister Isabella
- 35:10Speaker 1: started having a gu at me because one side had
- 35:13Speaker 1: five and the other side had four. As one of
- 35:15Speaker 1: the lads went for a drink. So I was really
- 35:19Speaker 1: my hands were tired. I had no choice. I showed
- 35:22Speaker 1: her a yellow card for interfering with play. She wasn't happy,
- 35:26Speaker 1: i'll tell you. And as Brody had another sister called Sophia, well,
- 35:31Speaker 1: I booked her as well, as I didn't want her
- 35:33Speaker 1: to feel left out. Anyway, the game ended and all
- 35:36Speaker 1: the boys came out of it unscathed. Broseley Brody was
- 35:39Speaker 1: declared man of the match. A cake and a round
- 35:42Speaker 1: of Happy Birthday to you was sung and everybody went
- 35:45Speaker 1: home happy. As for me, well, i'll tell you what,
- 35:49Speaker 1: I was scarred for life. I really was trying to
- 35:51Speaker 1: keep control. The best thing I did was to buy
- 35:53Speaker 1: a cheap whistle, which was constantly in use. But seriously, though,
- 35:58Speaker 1: it was a great experience and I did enjoy it.
- 36:01Speaker 1: I loved it, I mean, and I'm really hoping that
- 36:03Speaker 1: next year. I'm hoping so much that next year that
- 36:06Speaker 1: he takes up Chess or Paul or something else that's similar.
- 36:10Speaker 1: And we have an artist quite at birthday okay, track
- 36:13Speaker 1: from two thousand and three. This is a Rachel Stephens. Well,
- 36:29Speaker 1: that's Rachel Stevens there and a song called sweet Dreams. Okay,
- 36:34Speaker 1: So just want to squeeze these last bits in so
- 36:36Speaker 1: just going to fade Rachel down a little bit. Now.
- 36:40Speaker 1: It was a double whammy of Halloween park runs at
- 36:42Speaker 1: the weekend for me. First one was on Saturday at
- 36:45Speaker 1: the Dover Waterfront where many of the runners entered into
- 36:48Speaker 1: the spirit of things and it seemed all the volunteers
- 36:50Speaker 1: were dressed up as pumpkins. I said a few welcomes
- 36:54Speaker 1: on the mic and reminded everybody it was the one
- 36:57Speaker 1: hundredth part run. Amy Stimpson then promoted and an initiative
- 37:00Speaker 1: called a lift the curfew. Very important this actually especially
- 37:04Speaker 1: for ladies. This is because now the dark evenings are here,
- 37:07Speaker 1: many female runners will not go out, so it was
- 37:11Speaker 1: to encourage them to wear high viz and head torches,
- 37:14Speaker 1: don't go out alone, go out in groups as opposed
- 37:17Speaker 1: to and not running at all, so they go look
- 37:19Speaker 1: out for a lift the curfew now. The mic was
- 37:22Speaker 1: then passed through some of Louise as she promoted five
- 37:25Speaker 1: K Your Way, which is to encourage families and friends
- 37:28Speaker 1: and indeed cancer survivors to join the park run. The
- 37:32Speaker 1: idea is to do a bit of exercise and swap
- 37:34Speaker 1: stories over a coffee afterwards. Run director Ian then said
- 37:38Speaker 1: his bit and off they went one hundred and ninety
- 37:41Speaker 1: eight runners, walkers and joggers. Crossing the finishing line, I
- 37:44Speaker 1: played a bit of spooky music and cheered everyone home
- 37:47Speaker 1: and it really was a successful fun morning. We have
- 37:49Speaker 1: some good fund We have some good mornings down there. Actually,
- 37:52Speaker 1: it's a big thank you to Amy and the enthusiasm
- 37:55Speaker 1: of herself and her team.
- 37:57Speaker 2: Well.
- 37:58Speaker 1: Sunday morning, I put on my skeleton costs once again
- 38:00Speaker 1: and headed over to the Radna Park Junior Park Run,
- 38:03Speaker 1: where there were some amazing costumes worn by both adults
- 38:07Speaker 1: and children. Once again, Thriller and Ghostbusters would play with
- 38:11Speaker 1: a load of spooky sounds of ghostly laughter and were
- 38:14Speaker 1: wolf's howling. Kirsty, the run director, looked great as a
- 38:18Speaker 1: witch there and she gave her a brief in followed
- 38:21Speaker 1: by a quick warm up, and off they went two
- 38:23Speaker 1: laps of the Radna Park. And it's so good to
- 38:26Speaker 1: see parents and kids, especially the kids out in the
- 38:28Speaker 1: fresh air. And it was a bit chilly, you know,
- 38:31Speaker 1: but it's great to see him out doing some exercise
- 38:33Speaker 1: and exercise and having fun, which is what Junior Park
- 38:38Speaker 1: run is all about. Okay, so let's switch to a
- 38:42Speaker 1: running ripple about a beachy Head. Last weekend saw several
- 38:46Speaker 1: local ultramarathon, full marathon, half marathon and ten k runners
- 38:51Speaker 1: head off to a beachy Head. Now I'm still having
- 38:55Speaker 1: nightmares about beachy Head after running it. I did it
- 38:57Speaker 1: two years on the trot, but every time I see
- 39:01Speaker 1: a heel, however, palpitations. Now, for those of you that
- 39:05Speaker 1: are thinking about it for next year, you have to
- 39:07Speaker 1: make your way up a really steep, muddy heel right
- 39:10Speaker 1: at the start before you even tackle the downs, and
- 39:14Speaker 1: it really is an eye opener. But for some reason
- 39:17Speaker 1: runners come back year after year. In fact, Gary and
- 39:20Speaker 1: Michelle Barnes celebrated ten consecutive years of attending this event.
- 39:25Speaker 1: And as you find out shortly, Gary run the marathon
- 39:27Speaker 1: on the Saturday and he then again he ran the
- 39:29Speaker 1: half on the Sunday. So let's start with some times
- 39:32Speaker 1: for the South Kent Harriers. As I said before, Gary
- 39:36Speaker 1: Barnes ran the full marathon on Saturday in a time
- 39:39Speaker 1: of four hours thirty three eight and then the half
- 39:42Speaker 1: on Sunday one hour fifty nine forty five in such
- 39:47Speaker 1: really really tough hilly conditions. The other Harriers all settled
- 39:51Speaker 1: for just the half Rebecca Edwards did it in three
- 39:53Speaker 1: hours thirty two ten, Michelle Barnes three hours fifteen twenty six,
- 39:58Speaker 1: bouncing back after a recent operation, Tom Saunder's run through
- 40:01Speaker 1: twenty eighth eight and Kirsty Muller run four thirteen thirty
- 40:06Speaker 1: so in fact it was a bit of a combination
- 40:08Speaker 1: of South Kent Harriers and Dover road runners. Two runners
- 40:12Speaker 1: from the folks that running an athletic club run the
- 40:14Speaker 1: ultra distance, which is thirty two miles, which is a
- 40:18Speaker 1: marathon plus six miles. Fill Mall did seven hours fifty
- 40:22Speaker 1: one thirty four and Debbie Palmitter did seven hours fifty
- 40:26Speaker 1: one fifty to a very brave that possibly bonkers athletes.
- 40:31Speaker 1: Linea Stockhall run the half in two oh nine twenty
- 40:34Speaker 1: seven and Rachel Smith two forty three fifty six. Husband
- 40:38Speaker 1: and wife duo Phil and Jenny Heathfield run the marathon
- 40:41Speaker 1: in five hours forty three twenty seven, Jenny getting a
- 40:45Speaker 1: course PB by seven minutes and Phil a course PB
- 40:48Speaker 1: by ten minutes, both absolutely buzzing afterwards, Jenny saying as
- 40:53Speaker 1: much as she loved it, it's definitely not one for
- 40:56Speaker 1: the faint hearted. Okay, so we're going to play a
- 40:59Speaker 1: little bit of Yeah, I love this one. It's nineteen
- 41:02Speaker 1: ninety two, but I'm sure it came out many years
- 41:04Speaker 1: before that. This is Roy Orbison, who goes roy Albison.
- 41:21Speaker 1: There Drove All Nights and that was written by Roy Orbison,
- 41:26Speaker 1: and I'm pretty sure that someone else made quite a
- 41:29Speaker 1: hit out of it, Cindy Lauper or somebody like that. Anyway,
- 41:33Speaker 1: I mean Roy Orbison. I love his songs, believe it
- 41:35Speaker 1: or not, part of the Traveling Wilbury's. He was great
- 41:38Speaker 1: in that anyway. That's it from me. Now I'll be
- 41:42Speaker 1: back on Saturday Sports Show with the ad discussing how
- 41:45Speaker 1: Folks and in Victor suffered their first defeat during the
- 41:47Speaker 1: week against Hashtag United and will they bounce back against
- 41:51Speaker 1: Biller Ricky on Saturday. I'll be on the mic at
- 41:53Speaker 1: the Deal five miler on Sunday. Junior race starts at
- 41:56Speaker 1: ten Seniors at ten thirty. So if you're taking part,
- 42:00Speaker 1: pop over and say hello. And that's it. So buy
- 42:03Speaker 1: phone out on one oh five point nine FM, online
- 42:06Speaker 1: at radiofolksthon dot com and on your smart speaker.
