- 0:00Welcome, everyone. 00:29 --> 00:32 Welcome, everyone, to the Rocky Series podcast, Going the Distance. 00:32 --> 00:38 I'm your host, Ryan, and with me, almost, sort of, always, Ruben, my brother. 00:39 --> 00:39 Yo, yo, yo. 00:40 --> 00:43 So, Ruben, today we're recording in Ryan's studios. 00:43 --> 00:46 We're in the garage studios right now. 00:46 --> 00:47 Just, you know, how's the setup? 00:48 --> 00:48 It's great. 00:48 --> 00:49 We have a couch now. 00:50 --> 00:51 So, we're on a couch. 00:51 --> 00:54 We're just, you know, slouching on a couch, ready to talk about Rocky. 00:54 --> 00:57 And I'm really excited about this episode because let's get right down to it. 00:57 --> 01:00 This is the exhibition fight. 01:00 --> 01:07 You know, just a friendly exhibition fight between Apollo Creed and Yvonne, the Siberian train, Drago. 01:08 --> 01:09 Let's not get right into it. 01:11 --> 01:13 I had a very cool moment at work today. 01:13 --> 01:14 Do tell. 01:14 --> 01:16 So, what happened at work today, Ruben? 01:16 --> 01:24 As has ever happened to you, brother, when you are living your life, you're with civilians, non-Rocky fans that you know of. 01:25 --> 01:26 Somehow, Rocky comes up. 01:27 --> 01:28 And it turns out they're a huge fan. 01:28 --> 01:29 Amazing. 01:30 --> 01:30 Yeah. 01:30 --> 01:31 So, that's what happened at work. 01:31 --> 01:32 At a regular customer. 01:32 --> 01:33 Right. 01:33 --> 01:33 He comes in. 01:33 --> 01:35 He's wearing a Cobra Kai shirt. 01:36 --> 01:36 Sure. 01:36 --> 01:41 If you are Cobra Kai slash Karate Kid fan, chances are you've watched Rocky. 01:41 --> 01:41 Yeah. 01:41 --> 01:43 So, I was like, oh, Cobra Kai. 01:43 --> 01:47 I didn't know I was letting such riffraff into the shop. 01:47 --> 01:48 And he just laughs. 01:48 --> 01:50 And he's like, are you like a Karate Kid fan? 01:50 --> 01:53 Or are you just like the, you know, the shirt? 01:53 --> 01:54 So, I'm a fan. 01:54 --> 01:58 I'm like, oh, did you watch the sequel thing on YouTube Red? 01:58 --> 01:59 And he's like, yeah. 02:00 --> 02:01 And I was like, okay. 02:01 --> 02:02 Anyways, talked for a bit about that. 02:03 --> 02:06 Said, we had a guest on here. 02:06 --> 02:07 Derek, the Wayne Johnson. 02:07 --> 02:14 Yeah, we had Derek Wayne Johnson, the documentarian, who did King of the Underdogs, the documentary about John G. Appleton. 02:15 --> 02:17 I can't recommend that more. 02:17 --> 02:18 Yeah. 02:18 --> 02:20 I said, well, I have a Rocky podcast with my brother. 02:20 --> 02:24 He interviewed this guy that made a documentary on John G. Appleton. 02:24 --> 02:24 He's like, huh, what? 02:25 --> 02:28 And I thought, okay, I've talked out of my element. 02:28 --> 02:30 And so, he's like, you have what? 02:30 --> 02:31 I said, I have a Rocky podcast. 02:31 --> 02:32 He's like, you have a Rocky podcast? 03:15 --> 03:17 Somebody listening to this podcast that's not a Rocky fan? 03:17 --> 03:18 I don't like Rocky. 03:18 --> 03:21 I hate it, but I sure love Ryan Rubin talking about Rocky. 03:22 --> 03:22 All right. 03:23 --> 03:24 So, Rubin, let's get into it. 03:24 --> 03:25 This is... 03:25 --> 03:33 This sequence right now starts off with Drago in the basement of this arena somehow. 03:33 --> 03:33 He somehow... 03:34 --> 03:38 There's this huge subsection of flooring underneath the ring. 03:38 --> 03:38 Yeah. 03:39 --> 03:51 So, we're led to believe that this ring, where it's situated in the arena, is above this whole sub-layered domain. 03:51 --> 03:51 Sure. 03:51 --> 03:57 And you see in the backdrop here, there are hundreds of, like, security and personnel. 03:58 --> 04:00 Almost like Drago himself is a bomb. 04:00 --> 04:02 Almost like he could detonate at any moment. 04:03 --> 04:04 Keep a close eye on this Russian boxer. 04:05 --> 04:05 Sure, yeah. 04:06 --> 04:07 The distrust they have. 04:07 --> 04:08 The height of the Cold War. 04:08 --> 04:09 Yeah. 04:09 --> 04:13 And then the trainer is shouting Russian pep talk at him. 04:14 --> 04:15 Something like, you're the best. 04:15 --> 04:17 No one can beat the Siberian train. 04:17 --> 04:19 He's the Russian Anthony Robbins. 04:20 --> 04:20 That's right. 04:21 --> 04:22 And I love the music cue again. 04:23 --> 04:24 The nod to Vince DeCola. 04:25 --> 04:35 The musical cue here that we have of the menacing sound of Drago as his trainer is giving him whatever kind of pep talk and prep that he has before this fight. 04:36 --> 04:39 And unbeknownst to Drago, he has no idea what's about to happen. 04:40 --> 04:42 All he knows is he's standing in the middle of this ring underground. 04:42 --> 04:43 Like, what do they tell him? 04:43 --> 04:44 Don't worry. 04:44 --> 04:45 Very drab. 04:45 --> 04:48 Like, what do they tell Drago before he, hey, just step in this ring. 04:48 --> 04:49 I know it doesn't make sense. 04:50 --> 04:52 Did they give him any indication the ring's about to rise up? 04:52 --> 05:09 And there's a great sequence there where the trainer calls for Ivan. 05:10 --> 05:10 He goes, Ivan. 05:11 --> 05:13 So the Russian trainer pounds his fists together. 05:13 --> 05:14 He goes, Ivan. 05:14 --> 05:16 And he goes, clunk, clunk with his fists. 05:17 --> 05:19 Drago does a quick sideways glance. 05:19 --> 05:20 Like, acknowledging. 05:20 --> 05:27 Because the whole time he's looking forward, not even looking at his trainer, but at the very end when the trainer said, Ivan, pound, pound with his fists. 05:28 --> 05:33 Is that an early indication that they did mean to really, truly destroy Apollo? 05:33 --> 05:35 Why would they not mean that? 05:36 --> 05:41 I guess there's a small hope of a small part of me that hope that, yeah, they might humiliate Apollo. 05:41 --> 05:46 But there's this really, like, you want me to do that type look on his face? 12:00 --> 12:01 The life is on YouTube. 12:01 --> 12:03 Okay. 12:18 --> 12:19 This music kicks in. 12:19 --> 12:22 Of course, it's James Brown living in America. 12:23 --> 12:28 And Drago's hearing this cacophonia sound as the ring is being raised up. 12:28 --> 12:32 It's almost like you have this audience here, Ruben, as you can see. 12:33 --> 12:36 So Drago is seeing this that we're seeing on the screen right now. 12:37 --> 12:40 There's an audience in a theater looking out at the stage. 12:41 --> 12:42 You know what this reminds me of? 12:43 --> 12:44 King Kong. 12:44 --> 12:50 When King Kong was brought from the jungle and he was brought on the stage to all the rich people in chains. 12:51 --> 12:55 And he was brought forward to the people and said, look at this beast from the east. 12:55 --> 12:58 Look at this creature that has come into our soil. 12:58 --> 13:00 And that's exactly what Drago is. 13:00 --> 13:02 He comes up on some sort of like monstrous display. 13:03 --> 13:05 And he's on display for all these American people. 13:06 --> 13:10 Many of whom are, you know, rich white people looking at this beast. 13:10 --> 13:13 And they, you know, they're in awe and they're fearful. 13:13 --> 13:15 But they're safe behind the velvet rope. 13:16 --> 13:22 Just like King Kong broke his chains and made the audience in fear and chaos. 13:22 --> 13:24 Drago does the same at the end of the fight. 13:24 --> 13:25 Interesting. 13:25 --> 13:26 Is this your own? 13:26 --> 13:26 Yeah. 13:26 --> 13:27 I just literally thought of it. 13:27 --> 13:30 As I'm looking at Drago coming up, looking at the audience. 13:31 --> 13:31 It's beautiful. 13:32 --> 13:32 It's King Kong. 13:32 --> 13:33 It is. 13:33 --> 13:33 You're right. 13:33 --> 13:34 It is. 13:34 --> 13:35 You're right. 13:35 --> 13:40 Derek, if you're listening, I got another question for you to ask Sly that if you ever made the King Kong reference here. 13:40 --> 13:41 So the groups are dancing. 13:42 --> 13:45 You got these guys who have been wearing blue and white leotard outfits. 13:45 --> 13:48 And they got these little American hats on doing choreography. 13:49 --> 13:52 Now, we can argue that Sloan, he directed this film, of course, part two. 13:52 --> 13:57 He also directed Staying Alive, which was the Saturday Night Fever part two. 13:57 --> 13:58 Very familiar with that. 13:58 --> 14:04 I could argue that his dance routine directing probably came in handy when he had to direct this. 14:04 --> 14:07 Sure, he's able to pull that feather of his hat, apply it to this. 14:08 --> 14:11 So Drago is just looking around absolutely bewildered. 14:11 --> 14:14 If there was a time for Apollo to punch out Drago, it would be now. 14:15 --> 14:19 He's completely off his guard, has no idea what is going on. 14:20 --> 14:25 And Drago does a great job here, or Dolph Lundgren, acting the scene of like what in the world is happening. 14:25 --> 14:28 And I remember Ruben seeing this movie as a kid in the theater. 14:28 --> 14:29 Yeah, me too. 14:29 --> 14:34 I vividly remember seeing these Las Vegas dancers in their outfits. 14:34 --> 14:35 Their bikini outfits. 14:36 --> 14:39 I recall thinking, gee, that's a lot of skin for a Rocky film. 14:39 --> 14:40 And I would have been 10 years old. 14:41 --> 14:44 I was used to just seeing the skin of Sly and Apollo. 14:45 --> 14:45 That's right. 14:45 --> 14:51 It would be double standard to say that these girls are covering just as much of their private parts as the boxers are. 14:52 --> 14:54 And they're boxer shorts. 14:54 --> 14:54 Yeah. 14:54 --> 14:56 I love these headdresses. 14:56 --> 14:58 They have these big feathers on top of their heads. 14:58 --> 15:00 And check out this girl's fingernails, Ruben. 15:01 --> 15:02 Absolute talons. 15:02 --> 15:04 But they all have them because they're birds. 15:05 --> 15:05 Yeah. 15:05 --> 15:05 Yeah. 15:05 --> 15:09 So they have these long fingered talons. 15:09 --> 15:11 I do not like long fingernails. 15:11 --> 15:12 No, not like that. 15:12 --> 15:13 Well, I mean like those are... 15:13 --> 15:24 So there's dancers up in the bleachers above people on these like suspended catwalks with illustrious costumes and full white suits and white type hats. 15:24 --> 15:26 So quite the costumes design here. 15:27 --> 15:29 And we have a lot of American paraphernalia. 15:30 --> 15:33 American flags, both on their outfits in the air. 15:34 --> 15:39 And then we have shots of these like World War II and biplanes flying around in the air. 15:39 --> 15:40 Very glamorous, very... 15:40 --> 15:43 They spared no expense with this exhibition fight. 15:43 --> 15:48 Every female dancer is basically in a bikini with big, huge feather caps. 15:49 --> 15:50 They're as long as their body. 15:50 --> 15:51 It's insane. 15:51 --> 15:57 Of course, everyone's seen this, but when you really break down just how much is going on here, there's a lot happening. 15:57 --> 16:03 And I would be interested to know if Sly could ever tell us how long, how many days or weeks this took to... 16:03 --> 16:05 Oh, I'm sure this took a very long time. 16:05 --> 16:06 ...choreographer and to dance. 16:06 --> 16:10 And how much was James Brown involved with the shooting and in the setup?
