- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is Monday, the start of
- 0:16a new week full of leisure and chilled out edness.
- 0:19For me, maybe not for you, probably not for you.
- 0:23And if that's the case, bully for you.
- 0:24Thanks for keeping the world turning this week as I don't.
- 0:27But all of that said, no matter what I'm doing, friends, I will
- 0:32certainly be here each day with you so that we can read another
- 0:36chapter of God's Word together as we are tiptoeing, nay,
- 0:41walking boldly through the Gospel of John, encountering all
- 0:46these things that Jesus is up to.
- 0:48And today, today is one of those days that is quite a day of
- 0:52dichotomy. We've got Jesus doing incredible
- 0:55things and drawing in the crowds, and then Jesus teaching
- 0:58some really difficult things and the crowds leaving.
- 1:02And it is a particularly long chapter full of ups and downs,
- 1:07and we will enjoy it. So how about we just dive right
- 1:11in, friends? Lord, open our hearts so that we
- 1:14will hear Your voice and receive Your truth as we read this
- 1:18chapter together. Alright friends, let us do it.
- 1:22Let's read together John chapter 6.
- 1:35After this, Jesus crossed over to the far side of the Sea of
- 1:39Galilee, also known as the Sea of Tiberius.
- 1:42A huge crowd kept following him wherever he went because they
- 1:46saw his miraculous signs as He healed the sick.
- 1:49Then Jesus climbed a hill and sat down with his disciples
- 1:53around him. It was nearly time for the
- 1:55Jewish Passover celebration. Jesus soon saw a huge crowd of
- 2:00people coming to look for him. Turning to Philip, he asked
- 2:04Where can we buy bread to feed all these people he was testing
- 2:08Phillip for He already knew what he was going to do.
- 2:12Philip replied, Even if we worked for months, we wouldn't
- 2:16have enough money to feed them. Then Andrew, Simon, Peters
- 2:20brother, spoke up. There's a young boy here with
- 2:23five barley loaves and two fish, but what good is that with this
- 2:27huge crowd? Tell everyone to sit down, Jesus
- 2:31said. So they all sat down on the
- 2:33grassy slopes. The men alone numbered about
- 2:365000. Then Jesus took the lives, gave
- 2:41thanks to God, and distributed them to the people.
- 2:45Afterward, he did the same with the fish, and they all ate as
- 2:50much as they wanted. After everyone was full, Jesus
- 2:54told his disciples, Now gather the leftovers so that nothing is
- 2:58wasted. So they picked up the pieces and
- 3:01filled 12 baskets with scraps left by the people who had eaten
- 3:05from the five barley loaves. When the people saw him do this
- 3:09miraculous sign, they exclaimed. Surely he is the prophet we've
- 3:14been expecting. When Jesus saw that they were
- 3:17ready to force him to be their king, he slipped away into the
- 3:21hills by himself. That evening Jesus disciples
- 3:26went down to the shore to wait for him.
- 3:28But as darkness fell and Jesus still hadn't come back, they got
- 3:32into the boat and headed across the lake toward Capernaum.
- 3:36Soon a Gale swept down upon them and the sea grew very rough.
- 3:42They had rowed 3 or 4 miles when suddenly they saw Jesus walking
- 3:48on the water toward the boat. They were terrified, but he
- 3:52called out to them. Don't be afraid, I am here.
- 3:57Then they were eager to let him in the boat, and immediately
- 4:01they arrived at their destination.
- 4:04The next day the crowd that had stayed on the far shore saw that
- 4:09the disciples had taken the only boat, and they realised Jesus
- 4:12had not gone with them. Several boats from Tiberius
- 4:16landed near the place where the Lord had blessed the bread and
- 4:19the people had eaten. So when the crowd saw that
- 4:22neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into the
- 4:25boats and went across to Capernaum to look for him.
- 4:29They found him on the other side of the lake and asked, Rabbi,
- 4:33when did you get here? Jesus replied, I tell you the
- 4:37truth, You want to be with me because I fed you, not because
- 4:41you understood the miraculous signs.
- 4:44But don't be so concerned about perishable things like food.
- 4:48Spend your energy seeking the eternal life that the Son of Man
- 4:53can give you. For God the Father has given me
- 4:56the seal of his approval, they replied.
- 4:59We want to perform God's works too.
- 5:02What should we do? Jesus told them.
- 5:05This is the only work God wants from you.
- 5:09Believe in the one He has sent, they answered.
- 5:13Show us a miraculous sign if you want us to believe in you, what
- 5:17can you do? After all, our ancestors ate
- 5:20Manor while they journeyed through the wilderness.
- 5:23The scripture says Moses gave them bread from heaven to eat.
- 5:28Jesus said, I tell you the truth, Moses didn't give you
- 5:32bread from heaven, My Father did and now he offers you the true
- 5:37bread from heaven. The true bread of God is the one
- 5:40who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.
- 5:45Sir, they said, give us that bread every day.
- 5:50Jesus replied, I am the bread of life.
- 5:54Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again.
- 5:57Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.
- 6:01But you haven't believed in me, even though you have seen me.
- 6:05However, those the Father has given me will come to me, and I
- 6:10will never reject them. For I have come down from heaven
- 6:13to do the will of God, who sent me not to do my own will.
- 6:18And this is the will of God, that I should not lose even one
- 6:23of all those He has given me, but that I should raise them up
- 6:27at the last day. For it is my Father's will that
- 6:31all those who see His Son and believe in Him should have
- 6:35eternal life. I will raise them up at the last
- 6:39day. Then the people began to murmur
- 6:42in disagreement. Because he has said I am the
- 6:45bread that came down from heaven, they said.
- 6:49Isn't this Jesus the son of Joseph?
- 6:52We know his father and mother. How can you say I came down from
- 6:57heaven? But Jesus replied, stop
- 7:00complaining about what I said, for no one can come to me unless
- 7:05the Father who sent me draws them to me, and at the last day
- 7:10I will raise them up. As it is written in the
- 7:13scriptures, they will all be taught by God.
- 7:17Everyone who listens to the Father and learns from Him comes
- 7:22to me. Not that anyone has ever seen
- 7:25the Father. Only I who are sent from God
- 7:29have seen Him. I tell you the truth, anyone who
- 7:33believes has eternal life. Yes, I am the bread of life.
- 7:39Your ancestors ate manna in the wilderness, but they all died.
- 7:44Anyone who eats the bread from heaven, however, will never die.
- 7:48I am the living bread that came down from heaven.
- 7:52Anyone who eats this bread will live forever.
- 7:55And this bread, which ioffer so the world may live, is my flesh.
- 8:01Then the people began arguing with each other about what he
- 8:04meant. How can this man give us his
- 8:07flesh to eat? They asked.
- 8:09So Jesus said again, I tell you the truth, unless you eat the
- 8:14flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you cannot have
- 8:18eternal life within you. But anyone who eats my flesh and
- 8:22drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise that
- 8:27person at the last day. For my flesh is true food, and
- 8:31my blood is true drink. Anyone who eats my flesh and
- 8:36drinks my blood remains in me and I in Him.
- 8:41I live because of the living Father who sent me, in the same
- 8:45way anyone who feeds on me will live because of me.
- 8:49I am the true bread that came down from heaven.
- 8:53Anyone who eats this bread will not die as your ancestors did,
- 8:58even though they ate the manna. But we'll live forever.
- 9:03He said these things while he was teaching in the synagogue at
- 9:06Capernaum, Many of his disciples said this is very hard to
- 9:12understand, How can anyone accept it?
- 9:15Jesus was aware that his disciples were complaining, so
- 9:19he said to them, Does this offend you?
- 9:22Then? What will you think if you see
- 9:24the Son of Man ascending to heaven again?
- 9:27The Spirit alone gives eternal life.
- 9:30Human effort accomplishes nothing, and the very words I
- 9:34have spoken to you are spirit and life.
- 9:39But some of you do not believe me, for Jesus knew from the
- 9:43beginning which ones didn't believe, and he knew who would
- 9:46betray him. Then he said, that is why I said
- 9:50the people can't come to me unless the Father gives them to
- 9:55me. At this point, many of his
- 9:58disciples turned away and deserted him.
- 10:01Then Jesus turned to the 12 and asked, Are you also going to
- 10:05leave? Simon Peter replied, Lord, to
- 10:09whom would we go? You have the words that give
- 10:13eternal life. We believe and we know you are
- 10:17the Holy One of God. Then Jesus said I chose the 12
- 10:23of you. That one is a devil.
- 10:26He was Speaking of Judas, son of Simon Iscariot, one of the 12
- 10:31who would later betray him. Jesus, thank you for the gift of
- 10:46not only your life and your teaching, but have your very
- 10:50body and blood given up for us. Thank you that you invite us in
- 10:56the meal of communion to receive you in this way, so that we can
- 11:03receive this eternal life that the Father sent you to us to
- 11:07gift to us. And what a gift it is.
- 11:10And where else has Simon Peter said, would we go?
- 11:13Because indeed, you have the words of eternal life on your
- 11:17lips and you speak them kindly and graciously to us.
- 11:23Jesus, thank you for all that you give us.
- 11:26You are a kind and loving God and we are so grateful for all
- 11:32that you've done for us. Thank you for your forgiveness
- 11:37and your mercy that you lavishly pour out on us, particularly on
- 11:44the cross, as you go to Calvary in our stead, so that we can
- 11:49spend eternity with You and the Father and the Spirit.
- 11:54We love you, we are grateful, and we pray all of this in your
- 11:59holy and precious name, Jesus, Amen.
