- 0:41Speaker 1: The f A Hey, y'all, welcome to today's show. I
- 1:03haven't done one about a week. It's been a tough week.
- 1:07My little border Collie buddy died last Thursday, so haven't
- 1:13really felt like talking a lot. But we're going to
- 1:15get right back into it today. We had a couple
- 1:20questions and answers out of the classic work radio replies.
- 1:24I think you'll find these very interesting. Then we're going
- 1:26to get into the Third Commandment, which is regarding the Sabbath,
- 1:32and oddly enough, it's rather controversial these days. You know,
- 1:37there are several Protestant denominations, mostly fringe groups, that insist
- 1:42on keeping the Jewish Sabbath, whereas for nearly all of
- 1:48the last two thousand years, Christians have gone to church
- 1:50on Sunday and recognize Sunday is the Christian Sabbath because
- 1:54it's the day that Jesus rose from the dead. It's
- 1:58the new Law. Well, we'll get into that in a
- 2:02little bit, and it's probably going to be a multi
- 2:03part because it is. Actually there's a lot to say
- 2:08about it, actually, so we'll get into that in a minute.
- 2:11But let's start with the question. The person asked, did
- 2:15not the Church depart from the faith when she condemned
- 2:19Joan of arc a condemnation reverse five hundred years later,
- 2:23and they answered the Church did not condemn Joan, but
- 2:26was responsible for her canonization. Joan died a good Catholic,
- 2:30receiving Holy communion the morning of her death. A renegade
- 2:34and recalcitrant French bishop in the pay of the English
- 2:38condemned Joan and violated the laws of the Church in
- 2:41doing so. Joan had appealed to the Pope, and she
- 2:43had the right to do so or so to do,
- 2:46but her appeal was illegally disallowed. Within twenty five years
- 2:50of her death, Pope Callixtus the Third declared her mock
- 2:54trial to have been null and void and ordered a
- 2:57new examination of the evidence. Joan, who had been burned
- 3:01to death in violation of the Church law in fourteen
- 3:03thirty one, was rehabilitated in fourteen fifty six, the Pope's
- 3:07tribunal declaring that she was innocent of all charges. This
- 3:11was the only official judgment of the Church at that time,
- 3:14and her canonization in our days is in full accordance
- 3:17with that judgment. Person says, if a civil judge gave
- 3:20an unjust verdict because of a bribe? Would you deny
- 3:23that the judiciary was part of the legal system and
- 3:26the answer, I would deny that such a verdict at
- 3:28the true authority of the state behind it, and the
- 3:31state would disown the verdict if the facts were manifested,
- 3:34such as the Church disowned in the verdict of the
- 3:37unjust ecclesiastical judges. The person asked, was the Church right
- 3:43or wrong in condemning the theory of Galileo? Another very
- 3:46common objection, and they answer the committee on the Congregation
- 3:52appointed to consider his teachings declared that his theory was wrong.
- 3:56In doing so, the members of the committee were mistaken,
- 3:59but as there's no infallible decision was given on the
- 4:02subject in the name of the Church, infallibility was not
- 4:05involved in this matter. Meantime, Galileo had advanced no real
- 4:09satisfactory proofs of his theory, and the prudence of the
- 4:12prohibition forbidding its being taught is more than defensible in
- 4:16light of the circumstances of the time, But that is
- 4:19another question. Finally, the person asked, no one would guess
- 4:24from the lives of bad Catholics that their church was infallible.
- 4:28Another thing you'll hear a lot. Someone will say, well,
- 4:30I knew a Catholic it was so bad, and you
- 4:32know I always should kind of go back to him
- 4:34and say, yeah, you know, let me remind you about
- 4:38Jerry Follwell Junior or Jimmy Swagger, Or does that mean
- 4:42everybody in their church was bad? You know? Does that
- 4:45invalidate the faith of all the people that attended Thomas
- 4:49Road Baptist Church or whatever Pentecostal church's escaping my mind
- 4:54right now that Jimmy Swagger attended, or the one that
- 4:57Jim Baker another Pentecostal Or we can go down that
- 5:01list quite a bit, couldn't we. No one would guess
- 5:04from the okay, very the Catholic Church is infallible in
- 5:08her official teaching on faith and morals, but she does
- 5:10not claim to be infallible in making people live up
- 5:13to those teachings. Her infallibility does not deprive her subjects
- 5:17of their free will. After all, you yourself would admit
- 5:21that God is infallible, yet you do not account for
- 5:23people who violate the commandments spite of denying God's infallibility.
- 5:28You would account for it by the evil disposition of
- 5:31people concerned. And as the infallibility of God does not
- 5:35take away free will from men free will from men,
- 5:38neither does the infallibility of the Catholic Church take away
- 5:41from her subjects very You know, again, when someone starts
- 5:48talking about, oh anything, whether it's pedophile priests or you know,
- 5:54a Catholic they knew who was an alcoholic or abusive
- 5:58or a thief, you know, whatever, you could say, well,
- 6:01Jesus chose twelve apostles, one of whom was Judas, you know,
- 6:05if you want to look at it that way, or
- 6:07you could actually quote from Martin Luther where he was
- 6:09encouraging people to commit adultery and admitted that he was
- 6:13tacitly a murderer, having ordered many Protestant peasants to be
- 6:18killed with his full consent by the German princes during
- 6:24that time of upheaval or how many I mean King
- 6:32Henry the eighth was certainly a murderer, an adulterer, a philanderer,
- 6:36I mean, a genocidal maniac. You know, if someone throws
- 6:42those charges at you, you can go from the founders
- 6:45of their church to modern times and you can give
- 6:48it right back. If that's what she choosed to do.
- 6:52Generally speaking, I don't find such conversations be terribly fruitful.
- 6:58That's up to you. Good to have those facts at hand,
- 7:00you know, I've did a whole series on quotes from
- 7:03Martin Luther that would I mean there as evil as
- 7:08you can imagine. And when you show people this is
- 7:11the founder of your religion, do you think he was right? Well,
- 7:15they'll still try to justify his teachings, but they generally
- 7:18have to admit he was a really bad guy. Did
- 7:21oh King Henry the Eighth And we could get into
- 7:23some of the other ones too, But like I said,
- 7:25I don't find that terribly fruitful. Good to having those
- 7:29arrows in your quiver, though, if so needed. You know,
- 7:33the founders of the Seven day Advents, for instance, and
- 7:35the Jove's Witness. We're talking con men and hucksters that
- 7:40were often arrested for defrauding people out of fortunes, and
- 7:45Deir followers really take their word as gospel. So I mean,
- 7:49especially in such cases as that, very good to know
- 7:54who those founders were, and a few of the more
- 7:57public scandals, so you can say to them, now, why
- 8:00do you think this person got it right? And you know,
- 8:06you start telling them that story about who was it
- 8:08Mary Baker Eddie. No, no, wait, but I'm sorry, that
- 8:10was a Christian scientist. No, that was different. I think
- 8:13it was the founder of the Jehovah's Witness that was
- 8:16soliciting money to buy a big Cadillac limousine because he
- 8:21said he had to drive Jesus and Moses and Elijah
- 8:24around in it when because they were coming back to
- 8:26Earth any day, I mean crazy stuff. He may have
- 8:30been the one, or it could have been the one
- 8:31with Seven Day Adventists who was arrested for selling fraudulent
- 8:35cancer pururs and even magic beans. So get the book,
- 8:41The Essential Catholic Survival Guide, a really good book. To
- 8:44have a really good book. Whenever someone confronts you with something,
- 8:51you can turned in that book to find out what
- 8:53their denominations all about, what they believe, where they differ
- 8:56with Catholics, and you'll find nice little anecdotes like that
- 9:00that you can actually be of use sometimes. Now let's
- 9:04get into the third Command of God on Mount Sinai,
- 9:09and again this is as always, this is from Father
- 9:12Spiagua's exhaustive Catechism of the Catholic Church in the eighteen
- 9:15nineties on Mount Sinai, Almighty God spoke and said, remember
- 9:20that thou keep holy the Sabbath day six days. Shalt
- 9:23thou labor and do all thy work Exodus twenty eight
- 9:27and nine. The Third Commandment thus contains two injunctions, the
- 9:31command to sanctify Sunday and the command to work. In
- 9:36the Third Commandment of the Decalogue, God commends us to
- 9:39sanctify Sunday and to work six days in the week.
- 9:43The precept to sanctify Sundays and Holy days in order
- 9:46that amid the many cares and anxieties of life, man
- 9:51may not forget God, his final end and high calling.
- 9:54God has enjoyed a punt and joined upon him to
- 9:57keep one day of the week holy. As we have
- 10:00certain times set apart for the satisfaction of our bodily necessities,
- 10:06let me get a sip of water here, such as sleeping, eating, drinking.
- 10:13So we have appointed times for meditation upon the eternal truths,
- 10:17whereby we may obtain fresh strength for our souls. On
- 10:21Holy days we have the opportunity of expiating by prayer
- 10:25what we have done amiss, and of rendering to God
- 10:28the thanks due to him for the benefits he has
- 10:30conferred on us during the week. God commands us to
- 10:35sanctify the seventh day, because on the seventh day he
- 10:38rested from the work of creation. In his account of
- 10:41the Creation, Moses said, God blessed the seventh day and
- 10:45sanctified it because in it he had rested from all
- 10:48his works Genesis two to three. Man who has made
- 10:51after the image of God ought to follow the example
- 10:54of the Lord his God. As God ceased from work
- 10:56on the seventh day, so man ought to rest after
- 10:59six days labor. Man needs his rest after working for
- 11:03six days, just as one is obliged to sleep for
- 11:06six or seven hours after the work of the day
- 11:08is done. In order to recruit one's bodily powers. Some
- 11:12one needs a longer period of rest after six days
- 11:15of labor. At the time of the French Revolution, the
- 11:17observance of the seven day was done away with and
- 11:20the tenth day appointed for the day of rest, But
- 11:22it was soon found indispensable to return to the old
- 11:25order of things. The number seven belongs to the natural order,
- 11:29God who set the lights in the firmament of heaven
- 11:31for the signs and for the seasons, and for days
- 11:34and for years. Genesis one fourteen intended the changes of
- 11:38the moon, which occur every seven days, to point out
- 11:41to us the division of time into periods of seven days,
- 11:45in which one was to be a day of rest.
- 11:47Bishop Theophilus of Antioch, written writing about the year one
- 11:51fifty a d. Mentions the observance of the seventh Day
- 11:55as the universal custom. We who are Christians keep Sundays.
- 12:00You keep Saturday. The Mohammedans are Muslims, keep Friday, and
- 12:04the Mongols keep Thursday. And the Black population of Guinea
- 12:08and Goa keep Tuesday and Monday, respectively. I don't know
- 12:12if they still do or not. I have no idea.
- 12:14The cessation from labor every seventh day foreshadows our eternal
- 12:18rest in Heaven Hebrews four nine. By solemnizing the day
- 12:23of the Lord, we renew and quicken our longing for
- 12:26the unending festival of joy. Above. The very fact that
- 12:29we wear our best apparel on that day serves for
- 12:32a minus of the celestial happiness that we hope we
- 12:35will one day be our portion. God commanded the Jews
- 12:38to keep holy the Sabbath day. The Sabbath was a
- 12:41joyous festival for the Jewish people, because on that day
- 12:44they were delivered from Egyptian bondage. In addition to this,
- 12:48God gave the law from Mount Sinai. He enjoyed upon
- 12:51them to sanctify the day by cessation of work. The
- 12:54seventh day is a Sabbath day. Thou shalt do no
- 12:57work on it Exodus twenty ten. The Sabbath was particularly
- 13:02suited to be set apart for public worship of God because,
- 13:04more than any other day, it recalled God's benefits to
- 13:07his people Ezekiel twenty twelve. It was moreover typical of
- 13:12the rest in the sepulture of the future Messiah. In
- 13:15other words, the Jewish Sabbath is when Jesus lay in
- 13:20the tomb. This has a lot to do with why
- 13:24we celebrate the Sabbath on Sunday as opposed to Saturday.
- 13:28The Jews were extremely strict in their observance of the
- 13:31Sabbath day. Any prophanation of the day was punished with death.
- 13:35No work of any kind might be done on it.
- 13:38A man found gathering a few sticks on the Sabbath
- 13:40day with stoned numbers fifteen thirty six. The Pharisees would
- 13:45not allow that it was lawful to do a good
- 13:47deed on the Sabbath Matthew twelve twelve. No MANI fell
- 13:50in the desert on the Sabbath day. Sunday was appointed
- 13:54by the Apostles as the day of rest instead of
- 13:56the Sabbath because Christ rose from the dead on Sunday.
- 14:01That's what defines a Christian. Okay, when your seven day
- 14:05adventiscentur observant, friends or enemies or whatever they are antagonizers
- 14:11online try to tell you you're going to hell because you
- 14:16don't observe the Jewish Sabbath. Well, you could pull up
- 14:20the d do K, the work written by the twelve
- 14:24Apostles that actually explains that we go to church on Sunday,
- 14:28and show them that Christians have gone to church on
- 14:30Sunday since before the Bible was even finished, the Book
- 14:33of Revelations hadn't even been written. The books of the
- 14:36Bible had not been chosen, it hadn't been translated, it
- 14:39hadn't been compiled. I have found they just won't read it.
- 14:45They say I believe in the Bible only. And you
- 14:48can say, all right, well, show me a church that
- 14:51did not worship on Sunday before your denomination was founded
- 14:55about one hundred years ago, less than that, usually more
- 14:58like fifty years ago. And they won't. They say, I
- 15:01believe in the Bible only. And you can go back
- 15:03and say I can show you churches. I can give
- 15:06you the writings of the church fathers from Pope Clement,
- 15:10who was ordained by Saint Peter, and they'll say Saint
- 15:15Peter was never the pope. You cannot make these people
- 15:19read any history. They are so afraid of being enlightened
- 15:24by the truth. You could say here's a newspaper from
- 15:29ancient Rome and they'd be no, No, I don't believe
- 15:31they were any newspapers. Okay, they weren't really newspapers, but
- 15:33there were like the equivalent. There were bills written, there
- 15:36were announcements put on walls, and a lot of that
- 15:38stuff has actually been preserved. But when it comes to
- 15:41official church documents like the d dot K and like
- 15:46the writings of Pope Saint Clement or Ignacious or Polycarp
- 15:51or Justin Martyr, they've been preserved intact for two thousand
- 15:57years and if anybody wants to see them, they can
- 15:59go to museums and actually look at them. And not
- 16:03only that, but they've been constantly referenced and validated by
- 16:07historians throughout the century. It's amazing to me the willful
- 16:12ignorance of Protestantism. And I honestly don't think in another
- 16:16couple of generations there are going to be many Protestants left.
- 16:20And you know, you know I've said this before, and
- 16:23you may think I'm crazy, but it comes down to
- 16:27the original sins of Protestantism. Okay, of course, the Protestant
- 16:33Church is founded on the solo fida and solely scriptura. Well,
- 16:38the Bible disagrees with the concept of solofeeda or faith alone. Okay,
- 16:43so you can use the Bible to disapprove that one.
- 16:45And you know, but when you get to solo scriptura,
- 16:50that says the Bible alone, and they all have different
- 16:54interpretations of what the Bible means, and they won't go
- 16:57back to what the Apostles and their immediate successors actually
- 16:59say said it meant. Meanwhile, the Bible itself contradicts the
- 17:04Bible alone. So, as you know, from an intellectual perspective,
- 17:12that's what convinced me of the truth of Catholicism was
- 17:15that the Bible itself conflicted with every Protestant denomination I
- 17:19could find that said they based everything they did on
- 17:21the Bible. Okay, that leads you to exactly to the
- 17:25next example that the third original sin we might say
- 17:29of Protestantism is divorce. In all four Gospels, says Jesus says,
- 17:34no divorce. Every single Protestant church allows divorce. None of
- 17:40them say it's a sinful wrong, not Christian, not allowed.
- 17:45Only the Catholic Church, because even the Orthodox Church does
- 17:48allow divorce in some cases. Only the Catholic Church says
- 17:53exactly what Jesus said. Well, we can extrapolate that out,
- 17:57and here we are five hundred years later approximately, and
- 18:02marriage is almost rare in America. Now we have about
- 18:07a fifty percent divorce rate, but we also have about
- 18:10a twenty five to thirty percent illegitimacy rate. So it's
- 18:14far less likely that a children a child would be
- 18:18born to an intact family, a father and mother married
- 18:21and in the same home and lived with them through
- 18:25childhood and into adulthood than it is for someone to
- 18:29never know their father or to come from a broken
- 18:31home where you know the father is just not part
- 18:34of it, or sometimes some mother, and certainly a lot
- 18:38less interaction and instruction from grandparents. Divorced or illegitimate families
- 18:44are far less likely to go to church. We've seen
- 18:48church attendants dropping decade after decade since no fault divorce
- 18:52became law. I guess in the sixties COVID PROTESTANTSTP going
- 18:58to church. Well, a lot of Catholics did too, But
- 19:01the Catholics go back to church because we have an
- 19:03obligation to go church. Protestants aren't taught they have an
- 19:06obligation to go to church. Okay, church attendants in many
- 19:10cases fell by fifty to seventy percent. And now we
- 19:14got all this transgendered and LBG X y Z stuff.
- 19:19And I would be willing to bet the Methodist Church
- 19:24where I in the heart of the Bible belt, where
- 19:26I was a youth minister in just say two thousand, Yeah,
- 19:33around the year two thousand probably has a half to
- 19:35a third of the congregation that it did. The old
- 19:38folks died, the young folks divorced and moved away for
- 19:42the most part. And I mean I can see it
- 19:46with my own eyes on a Sunday morning, the main
- 19:50line Protestant churches, your Baptist, your Presbyterian, your Methodist, your Lutheran.
- 19:55The parking lots are like half full where they used
- 19:57to be overflowing. Well, obviously we can say these people
- 20:01are going to a lot of them are now going
- 20:03to these big like evangelical evangelical megachurches. But while that
- 20:08may be a mile wide, it's an inch deep. Their
- 20:11doctrine not only disagrees with the Bible, but it's not enduring.
- 20:19So I would I would be willing to bet that
- 20:24in one hundred years Protestantism in America will have largely
- 20:29died out. Yeah, and that's going to leave the Catholic Church.
- 20:36I mean, I'm sure there'll be some straggler, some hangers on,
- 20:39but I believe that the original sense of Protestant doctrine
- 20:44will be the death of Protestantism. And it's not going
- 20:48to be long. It's not gonna be long at all.
- 20:51Looking at the decline of attendance and affiliation and even
- 20:58people saying they're Christian, you know, a Catholics, Catholic, even
- 21:03a bad Catholic, still identify as as a Catholic unless
- 21:05they you know, to our total apostate. A lot of
- 21:11people raise Presbyterian, Methodists, ablished you name it, go to
- 21:15college and come out atheists and they no longer affiliate,
- 21:18even if they've been raised Christian. And with the breakdown
- 21:24of the nuclear family, you know, the church is literally
- 21:27built upon the structure of the family with the That's
- 21:30why I call it the original sin of Protestism. When
- 21:33you break the family, you eventually break the church. Not
- 21:38the Catholic Church, but Protestant churches. Yeah, and you know
- 21:45it's we're going to go through some really bad times.
- 21:49And so that's one of the main reasons I do
- 21:50this podcast. You need to know what the Catholic Church believes,
- 21:54why it believes it, and how to defend it. Because
- 21:57you may be the only reason you're friends and family
- 22:00get to heaven. Seriously, if you can explain to them
- 22:05your faith and encourage them to become Catholic, you may
- 22:08be the only reason they go to heaven. I got
- 22:12I mean, I was just really nasty comments made the
- 22:16other day from a couple of I don't know what
- 22:19they were, some French Protestant group online. They were calling
- 22:23me demonic and such because I was saying this very
- 22:25thing and I wasn't going this far. I was saying,
- 22:28you know, they said there was no Catholic church and
- 22:31the first in early Christianity. I said, well, you know,
- 22:34Pope Clement did actually reference the Catholic Church and he
- 22:37was ordained by Saint Peter. And they said Saint Peter
- 22:40was never pope. There were no popes. And I said, well,
- 22:42he was called Pope Saint Clement, and his successor was
- 22:45called and they said it's not in the Bible. We
- 22:47don't believe. I said, here are the historical documents. I
- 22:50welcome you to read him. They said, no, we believe this.
- 22:52There was this church, they just call it the Way
- 22:54and it was disorganized. And I said, cite one historic source, site,
- 23:00one source from history. Show me a church, a building, archaeology.
- 23:05I can show you the catechisms. I can show you
- 23:07the cave churches in Turkey. I can show you the
- 23:10earliest church. I can show you a church where what
- 23:13Saint James painted a portrait of the Blessed Virgin Mary
- 23:16and it's been venerated for two thousand years. Show me
- 23:20one building, Tell me the person's name. Tell me a
- 23:24person's name. Who was it that taught this doctrine that
- 23:27you believe, show me their writings, where are they buried?
- 23:32And instead of even even doing the most cursory Google
- 23:37search to back up their claims, they started calling me demonic.
- 23:42So really important, I mean, this stuff that's not sustainable.
- 23:48Those people of their children are going to think they're idiots,
- 23:50and frankly, they are idiots. I mean, it says in
- 23:53the Bible not to argue with a fool, remember, I mean,
- 23:57that's actually what in sirac or Wisdom. I think it's
- 24:01again in Ecclesiastes. There are two or three I mean,
- 24:05and Jesus said, you know, don't put your pearls before swine.
- 24:09But it actually does say even though Jesus said call
- 24:11no man a fool, in the Old Testament says do
- 24:14not argue with a fool. He'll just rant and rave
- 24:16and laugh, and you know it does you no good.
- 24:19So just block people like that. But that's not going
- 24:22to endure. Eventually, that ignorance in this day and time
- 24:27where someone can pull up the D dot K and
- 24:29a few clicks of the keys on a keyboard, if
- 24:32you recommend it to them, that's not going to endure.
- 24:36I mean, that's you know, those are the original sins
- 24:40of Protestism, solo fide, solo scripturer, and divorce. And really
- 24:46see solo fide says that you don't need a priest.
- 24:48So that's why, really, that's why I include it. But
- 24:53it's sola scriptura and divorce or the undoing of all
- 24:58Protestant doctrine and culture. And yeah, so anyway back to it.
- 25:06So we just said that Sunday was appointed by the
- 25:09Apostles as the day of rest instead of the Sabbath
- 25:13of the Jewish Sabbath because Christ rose from the dead
- 25:15on Sunday. Sunday is a festival of the Holy Trinity,
- 25:18for on the first day of the week, God the
- 25:20Father began the work of creation, God the Son rose
- 25:23from the dead, and God the Holy Ghost descended upon
- 25:26the Apostles. Yes, Pentecost is Pentecost Sunday. You know, if
- 25:32you want to, I mean, someone doubted, just say, hey,
- 25:35the Holy Spirit sanctified this day on Pentecost. The Apostles
- 25:40were authorized to transfer the day of rest from Saturday
- 25:43to Sunday because it was not so much the observeth
- 25:47the observance of the Sabbath as the observance of a
- 25:51fixed day in each week upon which God insisted his commandment.
- 25:57They were all the more at liberty changed the day
- 26:00old laws, but a shadow of the new. Sunday is
- 26:02called the Lord's day because it ought to be devoted
- 26:05to his service, and because he rose from the dead.
- 26:08Saint Justin in one thirty nine is the first to
- 26:11make use of the word sunday. Try to get a
- 26:15seven day outvisor, tour observant to read Saint Justin in
- 26:18one thirty nine. Okay, let's put this in context. The
- 26:22Book of Revelation was written about eighty I mean, the
- 26:25apostles were alive teaching Saint Justin and his contemporaries, the
- 26:32ones you know well, at least Saint John of the Cross,
- 26:35I mean. The others had been martyred, but their immediate successors,
- 26:39those who had learned directly from them, were alive. He
- 26:44was the first to make use of the word Sunday.
- 26:46It's name fitting the day on which the Lord, like
- 26:48the rising Sun, rose from the grave in the brilliance
- 26:52of his glorified humanity. On this day also God made
- 26:55the light, the Holy Ghost came down tongues of fire,
- 26:58And on this day we were spiritual enlightenment. The emperor
- 27:02Constantine the Great enjoyed the observance of Sunday as the
- 27:05day of rest throughout the Roman Empire, and Charlemagne caused
- 27:09those who violated it to be fined. We are bound
- 27:13on some Sunday to abstain from servile work and to
- 27:17assist at the public mass. We ought, moreover, to employ
- 27:21this day in providing for the salvation of our soul,
- 27:24that is to say, by approaching the sacraments, by prayer,
- 27:27hearing sermons, reading spiritual books, and performing works of mercy.
- 27:32Servile work is that which entails severe physical exertion and
- 27:37is exhausting to bodily strength. It is work generally done
- 27:40by servants, menials, artisans, and laborers. In a word, the
- 27:44work belongs to the class that serves. Hence the name
- 27:48Markets and all commercial transactions are included in the prohibition,
- 27:52Yet in deference to local custom, the rule is relaxed.
- 27:55In some countries. However, buying and selling must not be
- 27:58carried on during the hours of divine worship. In other words,
- 28:01don't go shopping during Mass. As God rested on the
- 28:05seventh Day, we ought to rest as Christ on Easter
- 28:08Sunday left the grave clothes and the sepulture and rose triumphant.
- 28:12So we ought to lay aside our earthly business and
- 28:15on the pinions of prayer sore loft to God. Physical
- 28:19repose is necessary because it is impossible for one who
- 28:22is greatly fatigued to pray well. Public worship is the
- 28:26holy sacrifice of the Mass, generally accompanied by a sermon.
- 28:30In the first centuries of Christianity, the Christians were accustomed
- 28:34to assemble on Sundays to hear Mass, and a short
- 28:37exhortation was delivered after the Gospel, as is usual in
- 28:41the present day. Yes, homily should be rather short and
- 28:44to the point. Actually, this is not a Protestant church
- 28:48where the value is based on the words of the preacher. No,
- 28:52we go there for the Eucharist to hear. The Gospel
- 28:56is wonderful, it's good. It's a very good for your
- 29:00soul to here. An explanation of it is instructed, But
- 29:03we're there for the Eucharist. There is no act of
- 29:06Christian worship that can compare in the dignity and value
- 29:09of the Holy sacrifice of Mass. On Sunday. We ought
- 29:13to provide for the interests of our soul. The physical
- 29:15rest is ordained in order that we may labor more
- 29:19diligently for our spiritual welfare. And we must not content
- 29:23ourselves with putting on better clothes, but must cleanse and
- 29:26adorn our hearts. The cessation from the work of the
- 29:30week gives us an opportunity, gives an opportunity to the
- 29:33faithful in compliance with the mind of the church two
- 29:35approaches to sacraments. They are encouraged to receive Holy communion
- 29:39on Sunday and Holy Days, and to give themselves to prayer.
- 29:42For this reason, afternoon services are held and the churches
- 29:46stand open for private devotions. Our forefathers used to read
- 29:51spiritual books, homilies on the Gospel of the Day and
- 29:54the lives of the saints. Many of our Lord's miracles
- 29:57and healings were wrought on the Sabbath day. Witness as
- 30:00a man whose hand was withered, Matthew twelve ten, the
- 30:03man born blind, John nine, the man that had drops
- 30:07e Luke of fourteen two. Although by doing so he
- 30:11gave great offense to the Jews, he intended to teach
- 30:14us to do good works on Sundays. The work permitted
- 30:17on holy days of obligation is one servile work which
- 30:23is absolutely necessary, especially works of mercy, too light and
- 30:26trifling work, three occupations of intellectual nature, and for reasonable recreation.
- 30:32We are not forbidden to do work that is absolutely necessary.
- 30:35Our Lord does not desire a man to suffer on
- 30:37account of Sunday rest, for he says the Sabbath was
- 30:40made for man, and not man. For the Sabbath Mark
- 30:43two twenty seven. All work may be done which is
- 30:46required for the support of life. We may have our
- 30:48food prepared, and are allowed to gather in our crops
- 30:50if the weather threatens their destruction. All work that is
- 30:54indispensable for public service may be carried on eg. The
- 30:57postal service, a railroad, telegraph, and police service. Ecclesiastical authorities
- 31:02have the power to grant special permission for servile work
- 31:05to be done on Sunday if there's sufficient reason. Christ says,
- 31:09the son of Man is the lord of the Sabbath,
- 31:12and the Church is representative can say the same. And
- 31:16as the chief and primary object for which Sunday is
- 31:19instituted is to promote spiritual welfare and eternal salvation of mankind,
- 31:24all works tending to this are enjoined upon us, our
- 31:27Lord says, the priest and the temple breaks the Sabbath
- 31:30and are without blame Matthew twelve five. The works of
- 31:35mercy are also enjoined. Nothing is more profitable to salvation
- 31:38than these, for on them our eternal fate depends Matthew
- 31:43twenty five thirty five. We have Christ's example and precept
- 31:47also for the performance of charitable works on Sunday. It
- 31:50is lawful to do a good deed on the Sabbath
- 31:53day Luke twelve twelve. Some of the saints choose to
- 31:57visit the hospitals after Mass, since been the remainder of
- 31:59Sunday and sis serving the sick. Again. It must be
- 32:01remembered that only such servile work as is absolutely necessary,
- 32:06is permitted, although its object be a charitable one. For
- 32:10it is lawful to do all servile work without distinction,
- 32:13which was for the benefit of the poor. All artisans
- 32:16and labors might go on with their work, and that
- 32:19would be by no means permissible. In quotes Horus, for
- 32:22that necessary works of mercy exempt from the obligation of
- 32:26attendants at public worship. They are in themselves in acts
- 32:29of worship. James one twenty seven. Our Lord says, I
- 32:33will have mercy and not sacrifice Matthew nine thirteen. So
- 32:38that's like saying, if you're a nurse or something and
- 32:41you can't go to Mass and you're caring for the sick,
- 32:44that's a good thing, all right. That's just one example
- 32:47duties of parents. I mean, you can figure this out,
- 32:51but if it is any way possible, public worship should
- 32:54not be omitted these things you ought to have done,
- 32:57and not leave those undone Matthew t Twenty three to
- 33:00twenty three. What is it right to do if a
- 33:03conflagration breaks out just before a mass, or if there
- 33:06is an inundation, occupation of an unimportant kind may be
- 33:11engaged in. God does not require us to sit idle
- 33:14on Sundays besides writing music, and all mental employments are lawful.
- 33:19Sunday is also instituted as a day of rest, on
- 33:22which way we may freely enjoy innocent diversions. And we'll
- 33:27wrap this one up with his last topic in this section.
- 33:31Will probably spend about three days on this. Sins against
- 33:35the Third Commandment. The precept in joining upon us to
- 33:38sanctify Sunday is transgressed one by doing or requiring others
- 33:43to perform servile work. The Christian ought to allow his
- 33:47servants and even his cattle to rest on Sunday Exodus
- 33:50twenty ten. Servants, apprentices, and all who are in subordinate
- 33:54positions ought not to remain in a situation where they
- 33:58cannot fulfill their religious obligations. Servile work is a mortal
- 34:02sin if it be done for more than two or
- 34:04three hours on Sunday without urgent necessity. Yet hard work,
- 34:08if done for a shorter time, or even light work
- 34:10for the same time, is not a mortal sin. Nor
- 34:14is it so if not, Nor is it so if
- 34:19a not very valid reason is countered is counted on
- 34:23as an excuse. Nor again, if a servant does what
- 34:27his master without cogent grounds requires of him. In other words,
- 34:30if you have a really serious reason you need to
- 34:33do it, it's okay. And if you're ordered to do it
- 34:35and you don't have a choice, in the latter case,
- 34:39the sin rests with the master. If scandal was given
- 34:43by doing servile work, even for a short time, it
- 34:47is a grievous sin. Our Lord, says one who gives scandal,
- 34:50of one who gives scandal, it were better for him,
- 34:53that a millstone should be hanged about his neck, and
- 34:55that he should be drowned in the depths of the
- 34:57sea Matthew eighteen. God threatened the Jews most emphatically, saying
- 35:03that anyone who profaned the sabage should be put to death.
- 35:06He shall do any work in it. His soul show
- 35:09Parashae in the midst of his people Exodus thirty one
- 35:12to fourteen, and two by carelessness about attending and two
- 35:18by carelessness about attendants at public worship. Entertainments given on
- 35:23Sunday are often the cause why Catholics emit Sunday Mass
- 35:27what Folegues exclaim Saint Francis misel to turn day into
- 35:31night and night into day, and to neglect one's duties
- 35:35for frivolous amusements. In other words, it's not a valid
- 35:38excuse to skip masks to go to a ballgame or
- 35:41something like that. Three By indulging in diversions which are
- 35:46over fatiguing or of a sinful nature. Games which involve
- 35:50much physical exertion, hunting, dancing, et cetera ought to be
- 35:53avoided on Sunday. Also, those which lead to things unseemly
- 35:57such as bras extravagant, extravagant expenditure, disinclination for work. Worse still,
- 36:05if amusements are sinful in themselves. For whosoever committeth sin
- 36:10is a servant of sin John eight thirty four. And
- 36:14thus servile work of the most degrading description is done.
- 36:18Woe to him who chooses the day which is consecrated
- 36:21to divine service, to offend against God and to injure
- 36:24his own soul most deeply. Some people take advantage of
- 36:30this day of rest to indulge more freely in vice.
- 36:34Not unfrequently the devil leads people in peace all week,
- 36:37and when Sunday comes he tempts him to all manner
- 36:39of sin, pride and ostentation, and dress, gambling, dancing, excess,
- 36:45and eating and drinking. In present day men seem to
- 36:48think most of eating and drinking on the Lord's day,
- 36:51women of adorning their persons. How lamentable is the depravity
- 36:55of mankind and thus abusing the most sacred institutions. On Sunday,
- 36:59the day the devil of avarice is cast out. But
- 37:02it is as but it is as if seven other
- 37:08and worst devils entered in its place. The love of
- 37:10the world and all it entails, the frequenting of convivial scenes,
- 37:15disseverance of the ties of family life, squandering of savings,
- 37:18and the dislike of work. It is far better, Saint
- 37:21Augustine says, that one should occupy one's self with needlework
- 37:25or field work on Sunday than to indulge in vice.
- 37:28To spend the Lord's day in worldly vanities amounts to
- 37:31a kind of sacrilege, to guess, to desecrate it by
- 37:34sin is worse than plundering the sanctuary. All right, we
- 37:39will wrap this one up here, Like I said, we
- 37:41will revisit this one next time, hopefully tomorrow. Y'all remember
- 37:45the words of Saint Padre Pio prey, hope and don't worry,
- 37:49and I'll talk to you next time.
