- 0:00You have arrived. Welcome to the Aspy world.
- 0:04Here's where we talk about anything and everything ASD in
- 0:07an upbeat and informative way. And now here's your man on the
- 0:11spectrum, your autism ambassador, Daniel Morgan Jones.
- 0:19So do you know what inertia is? And do you know how to actually
- 0:23overcome inertia? I'm coming all that right now.
- 0:25So inertia, what is it? I'm talking about autism
- 0:29inertia. And in Newton's law of motion,
- 0:32inertia means that an object is constantly in motion and never
- 0:36deviating from that. But in a more deeper sense,
- 0:39inertia basically means that if you're on a task and you're
- 0:41doing a task, you won't be able to deviate from that task.
- 0:44Or if you're not doing a task, you can't deviate from not doing
- 0:48a task, which basically means you can't start a task.
- 0:51Have you ever had those like moments where you're, you've got
- 0:54loads of ideas, loads of plans, you're thinking, I'm going to do
- 0:56this, I'm going to do that, I'm going to start this project,
- 0:58going to paint the ceiling. And then you just can't start
- 1:01any of them. Well, that's kind of like
- 1:03inertia and that's what it is. And so for artistic individuals
- 1:06who are highly motivated and highly kind of like ambitious
- 1:09ideas, they've got ideas to do this, ideas to do that, and they
- 1:11want to do all these cool crazy things.
- 1:13Inertia kicks in and says, by the way, you're not going to
- 1:17start any of these things. So I just want to interrupt this
- 1:19video and say, guys, if you are already following me, thank you
- 1:22so much. But if you're not, I actually
- 1:24have Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and Twitter or X so you
- 1:29can go and follow me on those. The handle is at the Aspy world
- 1:32on all those socials. So go please check me out on
- 1:33there. I do daily videos on there too.
- 1:35And so how do we overcome this? How do we start tasks?
- 1:38How do we put ourselves into a position where we're like, I'm
- 1:41going to nail this, I'm going to do it, I'm going to explain all
- 1:43that right now. I've actually got five ways of
- 1:45written down, like 5 kind of hacks or, or tips where you can
- 1:49actually help overcome inertia so you can actually get on with
- 1:52the tasks that you really want to do and not be afraid of those
- 1:55things. So my name is Dan and I have
- 1:57autism and ADHDOCD and dyslexia. And I know what I'm talking
- 2:01about with these things because I've been doing this for over 10
- 2:03years. So if you want to learn more,
- 2:05make sure you hit the subscribe button.
- 2:06So let's get into my 5 inertia hacks.
- 2:09So the first one is to provide structure.
- 2:12Now providing structure isn't just like, oh, you know, I need
- 2:15I planned it in my head. Don't need to do this, this,
- 2:17this and this planning structure is implementing things on a
- 2:20calendar by saying, you know, every Monday, it's going to be
- 2:23laundry day. Every Tuesday is going to be
- 2:25clean the house day. Every kind of Wednesday, it's
- 2:27going to be project today or whatever it is you're doing,
- 2:29right? And this can be inside or
- 2:30outside of work, right? You, you might have a job that
- 2:32demands you to be there every single day, or you might have,
- 2:35you might work for yourself. Maybe you're unemployed.
- 2:37It doesn't matter your level of responsibility or employment.
- 2:42The thing that matters is that you're planning the things that
- 2:45you need to do on a calendar. So you know that this day is
- 2:49going to be the day that I do a certain task.
- 2:51Now you're going to say, Don, well, you know, my project 1
- 2:54consists of 15,000,000 tasks. I can't just put it down to one
- 2:58day. And you're absolutely right.
- 2:59This is why we make a structure or we create a tentative
- 3:02structure by saying, you know, every Monday is project day or
- 3:05every Tuesday is Family Day, you know, and this is how we do it.
- 3:08So providing structure actually provides stability because
- 3:12structure is stability and stability means that you have a
- 3:16framework that you can kind of overcome.
- 3:19And like I had this huge issue like this is right here in front
- 3:21of me right now. I basically have all these
- 3:23things to do, right? I have, I have loads of things
- 3:25to do. My To Do List is like, it's just
- 3:27ridiculously big. It's like, honestly, it's huge.
- 3:29And so I was working with a therapist and I was like, I need
- 3:31some help trying to organise this stuff.
- 3:33She said, OK, cool, make it into a structure, make it into a
- 3:35grid. Like you can see this grid here,
- 3:36right? And each level of this grid is
- 3:40just like a different task on a different day.
- 3:41So I've got days of the week and then times across the top, and
- 3:44then I've put everything into one hour slot.
- 3:47Hey, it works absolutely fine. I'm doing it right now.
- 3:49Today's Monday, and I'm on hour 3 of content production and
- 3:53creation, which is pretty amazing.
- 3:54And I'm actually getting a lot done.
- 3:56And I didn't think I would get a lot done.
- 3:57So that is awesome. Structure is key two moving
- 4:01forward and getting success. OK #2 is my favorite one.
- 4:04This is To Do List. Now we all have To Do List
- 4:07coming out of To Do List. So you have like this To Do List
- 4:09and then you'll have another To Do List and I'll have dude, I
- 4:11have like so many to do lists. Like I have like a book full of
- 4:14just different to do lists. And that's OK.
- 4:17Actually, this tagline on the front of my notebook says my
- 4:20brain has too many tabs open. And it's absolutely right
- 4:22because that's what it feels like.
- 4:24I have too many tabs open with too many to do lists, but you
- 4:27don't want just A to do list that you just pile things onto
- 4:30and you never get them done. This is the best way to overcome
- 4:33inertia in the in the form of actually having A to do list.
- 4:36Because most of the part of the problem of inertia is that you
- 4:40can't get started on something because you have no structure
- 4:42and stability. But then you also have no
- 4:44indication of what you're going to do next.
- 4:46Like what is the integral pass with the the small piece that
- 4:49you want to action? So this is how we do it.
- 4:51You write a list of all the things that you need to do or
- 4:54you want to do that's going to move you towards a happier
- 4:57existence. Like, you know, it could be I
- 5:00need to clean my shed and pay the house.
- 5:02I have a free Autism Life XPDF book that you can download right
- 5:05now from autismtips.net. It's completely free.
- 5:08You can go there right now and download it, earn an extra $1000
- 5:11a month or whatever. And then when you you look at
- 5:14this list, you say, OK, which one?
- 5:15If I was to pick one of these off the list now and just have
- 5:17it completed instantly, which one of those things would bring
- 5:21me the most satisfaction and success 1st and then you get
- 5:23that one and then you put it in a new list.
- 5:25And then what you do is you put a date of completion.
- 5:27You say, OK, so say it's earning an extra 1000 bucks.
- 5:30I want to be able to earn an extra 1000 bucks a month by 6
- 5:33months time or whatever the day is.
- 5:35And then you list out all of the individual parts that's going to
- 5:38get you there. Like OK, first I'm going to look
- 5:40at my skill set, make a resume. Then I'm going to find jobs that
- 5:44are looking for that skill set. Then I'm going to actually
- 5:45hammer it and find a job that does that.
- 5:47Then when I do a job that does that, they need to do it for
- 5:49this amount of weeks. I don't want to pay so I can get
- 5:51that much more money coming in and that is how you do it.
- 5:54Then you take one of those actionable items and you apply
- 5:57it to do something every single day consecutively.
- 6:01Just one a day for however many days it takes you to complete
- 6:05that task. You will find though, two
- 6:07things. One is that you don't have that
- 6:08many things on your list to do. And when you start implementing
- 6:11a single task, you might actually be able to do more than
- 6:13one a day. But don't go more than one a day
- 6:16to begin with. That is how you ace a list.
- 6:18OK, so #3 is organizing your day around your energy levels like
- 6:21I've already told you about organizing your day into like
- 6:24while your week into different days for different things,
- 6:26getting you To Do List so you know what you're doing on each
- 6:28day, but also energy levels. Dude, if you wake up on a Monday
- 6:30morning and you're completely just just not fired up to do
- 6:33anything, you just like lethargic and it was a late
- 6:35night and the kids were up or whatever, those things going to
- 6:37impact your ability to actionably do any of these
- 6:39items, right? So you can't really do those
- 6:41things. So work around the levels.
- 6:43Look at a day where you have a low demands for energy levels
- 6:47and switch the day around because you're doing this week
- 6:50by week. So you have the ability to do
- 6:51that. And on a day where you wake up
- 6:53and you fight up to do like flip tables or something, or write a
- 6:56rodeo or whatever, then implement the things that are
- 6:58fast tasks, heavy demand on you on those days.
- 7:01Because this is what's going to get you over those things.
- 7:04And over the hill, right? It's going to be super dope #4
- 7:06is to have visual reminders, right?
- 7:08So visual reminders could be sticky notes or they could be
- 7:12little pieces of motivational information you stick around
- 7:15your house to be like, duh, remember you're going to clean
- 7:17the car today, Tuesday's calculating day.
- 7:19Because what happens for autistic individuals is that the
- 7:21more that they can motivate it, the more they can be encouraged
- 7:25to do something, The more visual that thing can be, the easier
- 7:29and better is for the autistic person.
- 7:30And this goes without the same because autistic people have a
- 7:32big issue with things that are not visual or lack of visual
- 7:38stimuli because visual is just everything, right?
- 7:41It's key to the success of an autistic person's ability to
- 7:44overcome something being visual, having visual reminders, having
- 7:47visual spatially around you is going to be way good and helping
- 7:50you stay motivated and wanting to do and complete those tasks
- 7:53because you're having a reminder.
- 7:55And it's not just a reminder. It says bring, you know, do the
- 7:58do the laundry. It'll be like a little picture
- 7:59of the laundry, something visual.
- 8:01No fun. OK #5 is the the most important
- 8:04thing, right? This is to work on tasks in a
- 8:07distraction free area. Now I do this via a few things.
- 8:11Okay, I put my phone onto like airplane mode so as if I'm in
- 8:14the cinema called cinema mode. So I put it on airplane mode and
- 8:17I check it into a draw. So it's out of the way and I
- 8:19can't see it when I'm needing to work.
- 8:20Have noise cancelling headphones that I wear so that it blocks
- 8:24out all noise. So there's no like, because one
- 8:26of the big things is like distractions, right?
- 8:27So phone is a distraction. We do scrolling on Facebook and
- 8:29then you're never going to get anything done because you're
- 8:31just looking at like, you know, Fred next door's got a new cat
- 8:33and all this kind of stuff on Facebook.
- 8:35It doesn't make any sense. So phone away on airplane mode.
- 8:38Now the other thing headphones and and the thing about
- 8:41headphones is noise cancelling headphones change the game.
- 8:43What it does is it blocks out noise.
- 8:45So there could be other people that are you can have kids in
- 8:47the house, you can have, I don't, I don't know, the
- 8:48neighbors playing outside, right?
- 8:50And they're having a water fight and you're like, dude, like I'm
- 8:52trying to work in here. Fix it.
- 8:54Noise cancelling headphones. You're trying to solve a
- 8:56problem. You're not trying to, you know,
- 8:59get the world to change. You have to implement these
- 9:01things to overcome them, right? So noise cancelling headphones,
- 9:04distraction free desk. So with all of my things, you
- 9:09can see my desk is like super clean right now, right?
- 9:11There's nothing on here. It's just my computer that with
- 9:13microphone speakers, it's like plan for decoration because
- 9:16apparently if you have like greenery around you when you're
- 9:18working, helps stimulate some kind of brain matters.
- 9:20Like, I don't know, there's some study about it, but I'm not a
- 9:23studier of those type of things that you said I thought was
- 9:24cool. So yeah, I've got my sunglasses,
- 9:27which are like the AI sunglasses from the Ray Barnes Wells.
- 9:31So and that's it. It's also my desk and then my
- 9:33headphones, obviously. And then that's it.
- 9:35So I'll look, I've got a computer, I've got a drink.
- 9:38Let's go, right? That is a distraction free area.
- 9:41And I've created distraction free sensory stimuli because
- 9:44those things are the things are going to get me through life.
- 9:46Those things are the things are going to get me to concentrate
- 9:49and focus on these things. Especially if you have ADHD and
- 9:52autism together, you're going to be able to focus on these
- 9:54things. But you just done now the five
- 9:56hacks of ways that you can implement technics your life on
- 9:59the awesome spectrum when dealing with inertia.
- 10:01I just want to suggest in this video here to let you know that
- 10:04confidence is one of the main issues that hold autistic
- 10:06individuals back from their full potential.
- 10:08This is why I read a course which is the Chaos to Confidence
- 10:11in 90 Days of Blueprint, which means I can take an autistic
- 10:14person from complete chaos to being very confident and acing
- 10:17their life. So if you're an artistic adult
