- 0:00Speaker 1: What's up?
- 0:00Speaker 2: Zeke and Seiko here. You don't even like sports.
- 0:05Speaker 3: Welcome to You Don't Even Like Sports. A podcast about
- 0:09Speaker 3: sports for people who don't like sports. With your hosts,
- 0:15Speaker 3: Adam Todd Brown and Jeff May.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Hey.
- 0:23Speaker 1: Hey, Jeff.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Yeah, Adam.
- 0:24Speaker 1: There's something I need to tell you.
- 0:28Speaker 2: It's the you don't even like sports thing, isn't it?
- 0:30Speaker 1: Yeah, you don't even like sports.
- 0:32Speaker 4: No, no, no.
- 0:32Speaker 2: It's the thing where you're coming out and explaining to
- 0:34Speaker 2: me how you don't even like sports.
- 0:36Speaker 1: No, wrong. Wrong, wrong, wrong.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Oh, you're not going to tell me about how you
- 0:39Speaker 2: don't even like sports? You're still going to keep it secret?
- 0:42Speaker 1: I'm going to tell you about how you don't even
- 0:44Speaker 1: like sports.
- 0:45Speaker 2: That's not true. I've gone on record.
- 0:47Speaker 1: On what record?
- 0:49Speaker 2: I've gone on record as saying I do like sports,
- 0:51Speaker 2: but it turns out, Adam, you never have because you
- 0:53Speaker 2: don't even like sports.
- 0:55Speaker 1: Hey, everybody. Welcome to You Don't Even Like Sports.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Sports podcast for people who don't like sports, like Adam.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Like Jeff. Like Jeff, who does not like sports, probably
- 1:05Speaker 1: will not be watching the Super Bowl this weekend.
- 1:08Speaker 2: You dirty dog. How could you?
- 1:10Speaker 1: It's an American holiday this weekend, Jeff.
- 1:13Speaker 2: It is. Are you excited? I would like to congratulate
- 1:17Speaker 2: all of the working from home people who can finally
- 1:20Speaker 2: have that hangover-ish day that they clamor for. the day
- 1:25Speaker 2: after the Super Bowl every year?
- 1:27Speaker 1: Honestly, I mean, I'm not, I understand some people in
- 1:33Speaker 1: some work situations don't have the luxury of taking vacation days.
- 1:38Speaker 1: But if you were at any point a serious Super
- 1:41Speaker 1: Bowl watcher and you didn't take the day after the
- 1:44Speaker 1: Super Bowl off as a vacation day, you weren't really
- 1:47Speaker 1: that serious of a Super Bowl watcher.
- 1:49Speaker 2: I mean, I guess it's also like, are you a
- 1:51Speaker 2: serious Super Bowl watcher slash raging alcoholic? I think those
- 1:55Speaker 2: two might mix specifically. Because you can watch the whole
- 1:58Speaker 2: Super Bowl and then just be like, all right, now
- 2:00Speaker 2: I'm going to go to bed at 1130. Right.
- 2:02Speaker 1: I don't think it necessarily means raging alcoholic. It's just
- 2:07Speaker 1: one of those events where people tend to get together
- 2:10Speaker 1: and drink a bunch. And you stay up and you
- 2:14Speaker 1: eat food.
- 2:16Speaker 2: Party.
- 2:16Speaker 1: You maybe take some of the ganja.
- 2:19Speaker 2: You put on a mink coat.
- 2:21Speaker 1: You put on a mink coat and you murder a
- 2:23Speaker 1: couple people in Atlanta.
- 2:24Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:24Speaker 2: To celebrate you might you very well could have i
- 2:28Speaker 2: mean it's all it's all about the celebration at this point.
- 2:31Speaker 1: And what better way to celebrate than with a little
- 2:35Speaker 1: double homicide you know alleged i.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Mean well for sure there was a double homicide.
- 2:44Speaker 1: Yeah two people died that's for sure by way of
- 2:47Speaker 1: stabbing we should talk we should tell people what we're
- 2:50Speaker 1: talking about.
- 2:51Speaker 2: You guys saw the title Yeah, I.
- 2:53Speaker 1: Mean, you saw the title, but also if you're listening
- 2:55Speaker 1: to this podcast, you might be like Jeff and you
- 2:58Speaker 1: don't even like sports.
- 3:00Speaker 2: That's not true.
- 3:01Speaker 1: So we'll tell you a little bit about who we're
- 3:04Speaker 1: talking about also, which is Ray Lewis. He's an NFL legend.
- 3:09Speaker 2: He's arguably the greatest defender of all time.
- 3:12Speaker 1: Quite possibly, yeah. Deion Sanders, maybe, but they play different positions.
- 3:17Speaker 1: At their position, probably those two are the greatest of
- 3:21Speaker 1: all time.
- 3:22Speaker 2: And Ray Lewis lasted forever.
- 3:24Speaker 1: Yeah, Ray Lewis played a long time in a very violent,
- 3:29Speaker 1: high-contact position on the field. He was a middle linebacker.
- 3:34Speaker 2: Yeah, he has quarterback existence. He exists in the timeline
- 3:41Speaker 2: of a quarterback. And his job is, I mean, his
- 3:44Speaker 2: job and his pastime is essentially murder.
- 3:46Speaker 1: Yeah, that's the thing. You have to take that into account.
- 3:49Speaker 1: No matter how religious an NFL player might be, if
- 3:53Speaker 1: he's playing on the defensive side of the ball, his
- 3:56Speaker 1: job is violence and injuring people. And they tend to
- 4:01Speaker 1: kind of revel in that.
- 4:03Speaker 2: Football's a violent sport, bro. You wouldn't know this because
- 4:06Speaker 2: you don't even like sports, but football is very violent, Adam.
- 4:09Speaker 1: It is a very violent sport. It's a very violent
- 4:12Speaker 1: sport that is absolutely rife with very religious people.
- 4:17Speaker 2: Strangely so. I mean, I guess it's, it makes sense.
- 4:20Speaker 2: You get a lot of people, um, the Bible belt
- 4:22Speaker 2: really does produce a lot of high end football players,
- 4:25Speaker 2: you know, the colleges and et cetera, like not a lot,
- 4:28Speaker 2: not a ton of like colleges, like, you know, on
- 4:31Speaker 2: the right side of the civil war have amazing, uh,
- 4:34Speaker 2: football programs. Yeah.
- 4:36Speaker 1: And Ray Lewis is definitely one of those players. Devoutly
- 4:40Speaker 1: religious and equally devoted to violence on the football field.
- 4:46Speaker 2: And he's somebody that sort of is lauded in the
- 4:51Speaker 2: football community as like this really like fascinating motivational speaker.
- 4:56Speaker 2: But also like if you watch his interviews, it's like
- 5:00Speaker 2: mostly nonsense, but like enthusiastic nonsense.
- 5:04Speaker 1: Very enthusiastic.
- 5:06Speaker 2: Like impassioned nonsense.
- 5:08Speaker 3: Yes.
- 5:08Speaker 1: And he's generally looked at as a very good guy.
- 5:11Speaker 1: There is a street in Baltimore that used to be
- 5:14Speaker 1: called North Avenue. It's now called Ray Lewis Way. And
- 5:18Speaker 1: that is, at least according to the city, in honor
- 5:20Speaker 1: of his charitable work, which I do believe because if
- 5:24Speaker 1: you want to honor him for his football work, you
- 5:27Speaker 1: could just point to the statue of him that is
- 5:29Speaker 1: outside whatever stadium the Ravens play at. Fucking Ravens Nest Field. Yeah,
- 5:35Speaker 1: the Wire Stadium or whatever.
- 5:36Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:38Speaker 1: And he's a devout Christian, like obnoxiously so.
- 5:43Speaker 2: That's like an underline. Like you had to underline obnoxiously so.
- 5:48Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 5:49Speaker 1: I'm going to make a weird comparison here. He's kind
- 5:53Speaker 1: of like the DMX of the NFL, where if he
- 5:57Speaker 1: leads the room in prayer, he's definitely going to cry
- 6:00Speaker 1: when he does it. But also there's always that palpable
- 6:04Speaker 1: sense that he might go off the handle and murder someone.
- 6:07Speaker 2: Yeah, that's pretty, you know, there's a fascinating, because when
- 6:11Speaker 2: we were going to do this episode, I started looking
- 6:13Speaker 2: up some interviews with them. And like, there's one when
- 6:17Speaker 2: they were going through like the labor strike, I believe
- 6:19Speaker 2: in what, 2010 or something like that, where there's an
- 6:23Speaker 2: interview with Ray Lewis, where at one point in time,
- 6:25Speaker 2: he says, I want you to study the statistics. If
- 6:28Speaker 2: there's no football on Sundays. And see all the evil,
- 6:33Speaker 2: you call it crime, but all the evil that puts
- 6:36Speaker 2: itself out there when there's no football for people to
- 6:40Speaker 2: enjoy on Sundays. And I was like, what the fuck
- 6:44Speaker 2: are you talking about?
- 6:47Speaker 1: What about the rest of the days of the week?
- 6:50Speaker 2: Evil free.
- 6:51Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 6:52Speaker 1: By those standards, the NFL is just being irresponsible by
- 6:55Speaker 1: only playing two days a week.
- 6:57Speaker 2: They should literally have a rotating cast of evil prevention.
- 7:02Speaker 1: It's weird how they don't tout that more. It's a
- 7:05Speaker 1: very big selling point for the league.
- 7:07Speaker 2: He's an interesting cat because he also was like anti-Kaepernick
- 7:11Speaker 2: taking a knee. I've done too much for the military.
- 7:14Speaker 2: I've done too much for the police. In Baltimore, I
- 7:18Speaker 2: feel like you've done some interesting thing with the police.
- 7:21Speaker 1: He's someone I could definitely see voting for Trump.
- 7:25Speaker 2: Oh, 100%.
- 7:26Speaker 1: He's got big, big Trump energy. That's for sure. And
- 7:31Speaker 1: that's not surprising because I think it's not just... He's
- 7:34Speaker 1: kind of like an evangelical Christian.
- 7:37Speaker 2: I'd be like, I wouldn't be surprised if he bought
- 7:39Speaker 2: into Q. I mean, I doubt it because I doubt
- 7:42Speaker 2: he goes on message boards and shit. But at the
- 7:45Speaker 2: same time, if somebody brought him into the QAnon thing,
- 7:48Speaker 2: he'd be like, yeah, this all makes sense, man.
- 7:51Speaker 1: I could definitely see that. That is one of the scary...
- 7:56Speaker 1: If Ray Lewis stormed the Capitol, if it was just
- 7:59Speaker 1: thousands of Ray Lewises. Oh, no.
- 8:03Speaker 2: Ray Q-us. Just going in and three-point stance, taking out
- 8:09Speaker 2: some fucking junior congressman from Idaho, getting blasted by three
- 8:16Speaker 2: Ray Lewises.
- 8:17Speaker 1: Just sobbing about his First Amendment rights the whole time.
- 8:21Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 8:21Speaker 2: You understand the evil we're trying to prevent. So this
- 8:26Speaker 2: is by the way, the energy that Ray Lewis brings
- 8:28Speaker 2: to life.
- 8:29Speaker 1: Yes.
- 8:30Speaker 2: There's a reason we're saying these things is that he
- 8:32Speaker 2: definitely has these, this vibe of like Southern convinced Christian,
- 8:39Speaker 2: like he's convinced of shit.
- 8:41Speaker 1: Right. But he also, like we said, makes a living
- 8:46Speaker 1: doing violence and on the field. And if you even
- 8:51Speaker 1: in interviews, if he's talking about the game itself, all
- 8:55Speaker 1: of that Christian stuff kind of flies out the window
- 8:57Speaker 1: and it's just about, I'm here to hurt people.
- 9:00Speaker 2: He's also anti like regulation in football, which is fascinating.
- 9:07Speaker 2: Like he was like talking about like when college football
- 9:10Speaker 2: was having, um, like with the leading with your head,
- 9:13Speaker 2: And like targeting rules. And he was like, like livid
- 9:16Speaker 2: that they would do. He's like, they're taking these babies
- 9:19Speaker 2: out of the game just for leading with their head.
- 9:21Speaker 2: And he was like, he's really like all about the
- 9:24Speaker 2: violence in football.
- 9:25Speaker 1: I wonder if there's anyone we've covered on this podcast
- 9:29Speaker 1: that we could maybe draw some parallels to in that regard,
- 9:34Speaker 1: who possibly is also anti-regulation and also possibly pro killing
- 9:40Speaker 1: a guy oh yeah tony stewart.
- 9:42Speaker 2: Yeah he's the tony stewart of the nfl.
- 9:45Speaker 1: He's got nascar vibes i.
- 9:48Speaker 2: Would also really like to see ray lewis competing in
- 9:50Speaker 2: other football leagues like tony stewart does.
- 9:54Speaker 1: Just showing up at the arena league yeah.
- 9:57Speaker 2: Just blasting some guy that's a fucking cashier at the
- 10:02Speaker 2: goddamn fucking Home Depot.
- 10:06Speaker 1: I would watch every fucking second of that.
- 10:09Speaker 2: Yeah, just demolishing that fucking Las Vegas Kiss team that
- 10:14Speaker 2: was existing for a while.
- 10:15Speaker 1: It was Los Angeles.
- 10:16Speaker 2: Was it LA? Okay.
- 10:18Speaker 1: I wish we had gone to a game.
- 10:20Speaker 2: I'm glad we didn't, but I wish we did. Does
- 10:22Speaker 2: that make sense?
- 10:23Speaker 1: There was a Vice article about it at one point.
- 10:26Speaker 1: And the guy... You can just tell from the article
- 10:28Speaker 1: that it's one of the most insane experiences you could
- 10:32Speaker 1: possibly enjoy. But you can't anymore.
- 10:35Speaker 2: Because it's arena football. Right.
- 10:36Speaker 1: Which I think is completely gone, right? Arena football just.
- 10:41Speaker 2: Even if it's still there, it's not like you're going
- 10:42Speaker 2: to enjoy it.
- 10:43Speaker 1: Yeah. Who's going to arenas right now except the entire Midwest? So...
- 10:48Speaker 1: let's talk about what happened with Ray Lewis at the
- 10:54Speaker 1: 2000 Superbowl. And we have to specify the way the
- 10:56Speaker 1: NFL works. When we say the 2000 Superbowl, we mean
- 11:00Speaker 1: the Superbowl that was played at the conclusion of the
- 11:03Speaker 1: 1999 season.
- 11:05Speaker 2: Shout out class of 99.
- 11:07Speaker 3: Woo.
- 11:08Speaker 1: So this game took place on January 30th, 2000 at
- 11:12Speaker 1: the Georgia dome in Atlanta.
- 11:14Speaker 2: And Ray, Georgia Dome, made famous by Ludacris because he
- 11:18Speaker 2: wants to fuck a woman on the 50-yard line.
- 11:21Speaker 1: Sure, of course. That's his fantasy, I do believe, yeah.
- 11:26Speaker 2: Well, the Dirty Bird's making it hot.
- 11:28Speaker 1: Ray Lewis did not play in this game. He was
- 11:31Speaker 1: just there to watch and party, which there's nothing.
- 11:34Speaker 2: Just in the rafters. Just watching like Batman.
- 11:39Speaker 1: Fucking hanging like Tom Cruise and mission impossible.
- 11:43Speaker 2: Staring at the game, waiting.
- 11:45Speaker 1: To fucking fall on someone, but still wearing a fucking
- 11:48Speaker 1: white suit with a Stetson. I don't know if you remember,
- 11:50Speaker 1: but this was a great game.
- 11:52Speaker 2: It's a great game starring two teams that nobody cared
- 11:57Speaker 2: about in the Superbowl.
- 11:59Speaker 1: Well, the Rams were kind of a big story because
- 12:02Speaker 1: up to that point, the Rams had been trash for
- 12:05Speaker 1: years and years and years. And then all of a
- 12:08Speaker 1: sudden they get their quarterback, who I believe was Trent Green,
- 12:14Speaker 1: gets injured at the beginning of the season. And they
- 12:17Speaker 1: end up signing. And I think his backup got hurt, too.
- 12:21Speaker 1: And they end up signing this quarterback who literally had
- 12:25Speaker 1: been playing in the Arena League and bagging groceries the
- 12:29Speaker 1: week before. And that quarterback ends up being Kurt Warner.
- 12:32Speaker 1: who probably would also make a decent season of this
- 12:35Speaker 1: podcast because that guy's a super duper character.
- 12:39Speaker 2: He's fascinating, dude.
- 12:40Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 12:41Speaker 1: And one of the first really fascinating things about him
- 12:45Speaker 1: was that he came from working at a grocery store
- 12:48Speaker 1: and carried this Rams team to the Super Bowl. That
- 12:52Speaker 1: team was so fun.
- 12:53Speaker 2: Yes. I mean, he was a... I mean, because they
- 12:55Speaker 2: went to the Super Bowl several other times because I
- 12:57Speaker 2: believe the Patriots dynasty started by... dunking on the.
- 13:01Speaker 1: Rams the next season i think was when the patriots
- 13:05Speaker 1: beat the rams.
- 13:07Speaker 2: Yeah kurt warner is a fascinating story it's it is
- 13:10Speaker 2: it was a great super bowl but it is definitely
- 13:12Speaker 2: one of those ones it's it's the rams and the
- 13:15Speaker 2: titans are just places that have all like their teams
- 13:17Speaker 2: that have been like we i guess we got to
- 13:19Speaker 2: go somewhere you know the titans are formerly the oilers
- 13:22Speaker 2: right um the rams are formerly from la This also.
- 13:27Speaker 1: I believe, is the year when the Music City Miracle happened,
- 13:32Speaker 1: which was a playoff game that the Buffalo Bills were
- 13:37Speaker 1: winning and should have won, but they kicked off with
- 13:42Speaker 1: something like 12 seconds left, and all they had to
- 13:44Speaker 1: do was go tackle the guy who caught the kickoff.
- 13:48Speaker 1: And instead, he throws this crazy lateral that probably was
- 13:52Speaker 1: a forward pass, but there was no replay back then.
- 13:55Speaker 1: And the guy who catches the lateral runs it in
- 13:58Speaker 1: for a touchdown, and the Bills were brokenhearted. Once again,
- 14:02Speaker 1: as happens with the Bills all the time.
- 14:04Speaker 2: Which is funny.
- 14:05Speaker 1: It's very funny, yeah. Because it's Buffalo. And, I mean,
- 14:08Speaker 1: that's basically Canada, so what do we care?
- 14:11Speaker 2: Yeah, they don't deserve a fun time.
- 14:13Speaker 1: But the greatest show on turf. That's what this Rams
- 14:15Speaker 1: team was called, and I loved them so much. This
- 14:20Speaker 1: Super Bowl, though, is one of the classic endings in
- 14:23Speaker 1: Super Bowl history. Because it ends... 24-17 or 23-16, one
- 14:29Speaker 1: of the two. So one touchdown margin, basically. And it
- 14:34Speaker 1: ends with Kevin Dyson of the Tennessee Titans on his
- 14:39Speaker 1: way to score that game-tying touchdown, and he gets tackled
- 14:43Speaker 1: by the ankles at the one-yard line as time is
- 14:48Speaker 1: running out. So he was that close.
- 14:51Speaker 2: That is very funny. And yeah, it finished up 23-16. Yeah.
- 14:55Speaker 2: So you're right.
- 14:57Speaker 1: And had he scored there, the game probably is tied
- 15:00Speaker 1: and goes into overtime. But the real interesting ending is
- 15:04Speaker 1: what happens a few hours later as everyone is doing
- 15:08Speaker 1: all their partying.
- 15:11Speaker 2: Strong Tupac Tyson energy right here.
- 15:13Speaker 1: Very much so. Which... It's interesting. We'll talk about it
- 15:18Speaker 1: more at the end. But this neighborhood where this happens
- 15:21Speaker 1: in Atlanta, it's called Buckhead. And I remember hearing about
- 15:24Speaker 1: this neighborhood in rap songs all the time in the mid-90s,
- 15:29Speaker 1: early 2000s, because that's when Outkast was really popular. And
- 15:34Speaker 1: they would mention Buckhead all the time. And we'll talk
- 15:37Speaker 1: about it at the end of the podcast. But this
- 15:39Speaker 1: event really changed that neighborhood forever. I mean, as you
- 15:43Speaker 1: would expect, two people got murdered. in the parking lot
- 15:46Speaker 1: after the Super Bowl. But what happens, basically, Ray Lewis
- 15:51Speaker 1: is at this game just to party. He's wearing an
- 15:54Speaker 1: outfit that night, cream-colored suit, mock-neck sweater, Stetson hat.
- 16:00Speaker 2: It's very Madonna in the video for music vibes, right?
- 16:05Speaker 1: A little bit, yeah. It's like what you would picture
- 16:07Speaker 1: Notorious Big wearing. Picture him right now. He's got a
- 16:12Speaker 1: white suit on, probably.
- 16:14Speaker 2: Yeah. Ray Lewis is probably like, he's probably like, you
- 16:17Speaker 2: know what? I should be a pimp tonight. That's how
- 16:20Speaker 2: I want to dress. Like, I'm surprised there wasn't like
- 16:22Speaker 2: a long feather, like an ostrich feather in that fucking Stetson.
- 16:28Speaker 1: This was very much the Jay-Z big pimping era. So
- 16:32Speaker 1: that wouldn't have surprised me. It's also the same thing
- 16:35Speaker 1: I'm wearing right now. I can't believe we haven't even
- 16:37Speaker 1: mentioned that.
- 16:39Speaker 2: Yeah, you have that Colonel Sanders tie on though. So
- 16:42Speaker 2: it really threw me for a loop.
- 16:43Speaker 1: It's called a bolo, Jeff. Come on, have some respect.
- 16:47Speaker 1: So conveniently, Ray Lewis talked about this incident in his
- 16:51Speaker 1: 2015 book called I Feel Like Going On. And he
- 16:56Speaker 1: makes himself out to seem completely guilty and takes all
- 16:59Speaker 1: the blame for everything. Just joking. He doesn't do any
- 17:03Speaker 1: of that.
- 17:03Speaker 2: He very much, you can tell it's like, it's got very,
- 17:07Speaker 2: he's got very guilty energy. Cause he, and he's just like,
- 17:11Speaker 2: that was on me. I was, I made myself a target.
- 17:15Speaker 2: And it's like, you are Ray Lewis.
- 17:18Speaker 1: Yeah, you're never a target unless someone has a gun, basically.
- 17:22Speaker 1: And yeah, what he implies is he made himself a
- 17:24Speaker 1: target for robbery that night. This is a quote. I
- 17:27Speaker 1: must have been wearing a quarter million dollars, just like
- 17:30Speaker 1: Jesus would want me to. I might attack that last
- 17:33Speaker 1: part about Jesus on myself. But here's the thing. Jesus
- 17:37Speaker 1: wouldn't want him to do that.
- 17:40Speaker 2: No, I do like the idea. I like when men
- 17:42Speaker 2: wear mink because I'm always like, hey, good for you
- 17:45Speaker 2: for also being a bad person.
- 17:48Speaker 1: Yeah, unless it's fake, which it usually is not, especially
- 17:51Speaker 1: if you're Ray Lewis rich.
- 17:53Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 17:54Speaker 1: If it's a fake mink, I like that. That I
- 17:57Speaker 1: can get with.
- 17:58Speaker 2: Sure, sure. Fake fur is a blast.
- 18:02Speaker 1: But a real fur? No. That's just cruel to quote
- 18:05Speaker 1: bare naked ladies. This is another quote, speaking of quotes.
- 18:09Speaker 1: I was way over the top. Way, way over the top.
- 18:12Speaker 1: I get that. I'm sorry. Frankly, I'm a little bit
- 18:16Speaker 1: embarrassed about all that now. But this was the mentality.
- 18:19Speaker 1: And I only mention it here because it became a
- 18:22Speaker 1: part of the story. That's him apologizing solely for what
- 18:26Speaker 1: he wore that night.
- 18:28Speaker 2: To be fair, he's right to apologize for that. But
- 18:32Speaker 2: not for those reasons. It is funny that he's just like,
- 18:38Speaker 2: you know, this is just such an embarrassing thing that
- 18:42Speaker 2: I did. having to get those men murdered.
- 18:46Speaker 1: Yeah, he's talking as if he was the only person
- 18:51Speaker 1: who was wearing a quarter million dollars worth of clothing
- 18:55Speaker 1: and jewelry that night. We are talking about a party
- 18:58Speaker 1: in Atlanta in 2000 after the Super Bowl. I guarantee
- 19:04Speaker 1: dozens and dozens of people were flossed the fuck out
- 19:08Speaker 1: that night.
- 19:09Speaker 2: Dude, yeah, there should have been just... You know when
- 19:11Speaker 2: you drive by a gas station and there's those guys
- 19:13Speaker 2: selling rugs and shit, and they're just like, oh, that's
- 19:15Speaker 2: an interesting place to be there. There must have been
- 19:17Speaker 2: fur people at every goddamn Sitco station and every Shell
- 19:22Speaker 2: station just being like, you want to buy fur? You
- 19:24Speaker 2: want to buy fur for the party?
- 19:26Speaker 1: Yeah, because that's absolutely the kind of crowd... Like, Ray
- 19:31Speaker 1: Lewis isn't... He wasn't at a fucking Friday's, man. He
- 19:34Speaker 1: was at a club where NFL players go to be seen.
- 19:38Speaker 3: So.
- 19:39Speaker 1: His argument that, oh, I was the one who made
- 19:42Speaker 1: myself look all rich and like a target. It doesn't
- 19:46Speaker 1: really seem like that's how it started.
- 19:48Speaker 2: It's literally where the players. play.
- 19:51Speaker 1: Right. Club 112. He might as well have been there.
- 19:54Speaker 1: I believe that's in Atlanta. So, yeah, that's a complicated argument.
- 19:58Speaker 1: There's no way he was the only rich person in
- 20:00Speaker 1: that crowd. And also, by most accounts, this incident starts
- 20:04Speaker 1: when they leave. And one of the friends he was with,
- 20:07Speaker 1: Reginald Oakley, he was with two guys, Reginald Oakley and
- 20:10Speaker 1: Joseph Sweeting. Apparently, Reginald Oakley starts getting into some sort
- 20:14Speaker 1: of shouting match with people in the crowd, which that
- 20:18Speaker 1: also kind of blows Ray Lewis's theory out of the water.
- 20:21Speaker 1: And this starts when Oakley gets hit in the head
- 20:24Speaker 1: with a champagne bottle.
- 20:25Speaker 2: I mean, champagne with my campaigns. I'm just going to
- 20:30Speaker 2: keep threading ludicrous, what's your fantasy lyrics, throughout this whole episode.
- 20:38Speaker 1: And don't get me wrong, getting hit with a champagne bottle,
- 20:41Speaker 1: that's reason to fight.
- 20:42Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 20:44Speaker 1: You're going to want to get some get back in
- 20:47Speaker 1: a situation like that. So this altercation breaks out between
- 20:51Speaker 1: the three of them and two men, 24-year-old Richard Lawler,
- 20:57Speaker 1: and 21-year-old Jacinthe Baker.
- 20:59Speaker 2: I would like to add, by the by, that three-on-two
- 21:03Speaker 2: is already not a great setup. Three-on-two when one of
- 21:08Speaker 2: them is Ray Lewis?
- 21:11Speaker 1: Yeah, it's also crazy to think about how young everyone
- 21:15Speaker 1: involved in this was. Ray Lewis, despite the fact that
- 21:18Speaker 1: he has been 50 years old his entire life, was
- 21:22Speaker 1: only 24 when this happened.
- 21:24Speaker 2: Really?
- 21:25Speaker 3: Really.
- 21:25Speaker 1: It's hard to picture Ray Lewis ever having been 24. Yeah.
- 21:29Speaker 2: Cause he, no, he's, he definitely has like 50 year old,
- 21:33Speaker 2: like Deacon uncle vibes.
- 21:35Speaker 1: He comes off like an authority figure.
- 21:37Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 21:38Speaker 2: He probably, you know what? I bet he's a lot.
- 21:40Speaker 2: He fucking loves that Sheriff Clark fucking wearing Stetsons and
- 21:44Speaker 2: loving cops.
- 21:45Speaker 1: Oh, I bet. This is another quote from Ray Lewis.
- 21:49Speaker 1: Point is, when you're dressed like that, you're off to
- 21:51Speaker 1: the sidelines. And here were these gangbangers stepping to us
- 21:55Speaker 1: from the shadows. Again, that's not how people say it happened.
- 22:00Speaker 2: He's saying it like there were werewolves showing up to
- 22:03Speaker 2: attack him in the middle of the night. I didn't
- 22:06Speaker 2: know it would be a full moon. But luckily I
- 22:08Speaker 2: had all this silver. I had this silver knife with me.
- 22:13Speaker 1: Like they were walking home alone in a dangerous neighborhood
- 22:16Speaker 1: or something. This was like an entire crowd of people
- 22:19Speaker 1: letting out at bar time.
- 22:21Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 22:21Speaker 2: And you are a six foot five monster of a human.
- 22:26Speaker 1: Just a giant. Just a giant.
- 22:29Speaker 2: A bundle of springy rage. He's designed to spring into
- 22:36Speaker 2: action to clobber you to death. And the only reason
- 22:39Speaker 2: you don't die is because you're both wearing pads.
- 22:43Speaker 1: But here's the thing, Jeff. He doesn't fight. That's his defense.
- 22:46Speaker 1: Because a melee breaks out between this group. And in
- 22:50Speaker 1: that melee, Baker was stabbed in the liver and in
- 22:53Speaker 1: the heart. Lawler was stabbed five times. Twice in the heart,
- 22:57Speaker 1: twice in the abdomen, and once in the chest. Both
- 23:00Speaker 1: of them died before they reached the hospital. Ray Lewis
- 23:03Speaker 1: claims that during all of this, he was just casually...
- 23:07Speaker 1: leaning against the 40 foot black limousine that had arrived
- 23:12Speaker 1: to pick him up, watching it all happen. His quote,
- 23:15Speaker 1: I don't fight, period. Yeah, you do. Yeah, I think
- 23:19Speaker 1: he might.
- 23:19Speaker 2: I mean, I understand that they, I know that like
- 23:22Speaker 2: in the NFL, they do classes on shit like this.
- 23:25Speaker 2: Like they have symposiums about like behavior and like what
- 23:29Speaker 2: not to do. But like nobody follows that. You've seen
- 23:32Speaker 2: HBO original series Ballers, you know.
- 23:34Speaker 1: I have, starring John David Washington. Denzel's kid.
- 23:39Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 23:40Speaker 1: So it was only, at least according to some accounts,
- 23:44Speaker 1: when Ray Lewis saw these two men collapse in the
- 23:47Speaker 1: street that he really starts freaking out. And the first
- 23:51Speaker 1: thing he does is order everyone who's with him, including
- 23:56Speaker 1: the two men and the woman he was with, who
- 24:00Speaker 1: was not his pregnant fiance. She was at home. He
- 24:04Speaker 1: had met a woman named Jessica Robertson a few days earlier,
- 24:07Speaker 1: and she was his date for the Super Bowl. Because
- 24:10Speaker 1: you don't want a pregnant woman cramping your style at
- 24:14Speaker 1: an event like that.
- 24:14Speaker 2: No, that's not fun.
- 24:15Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 24:16Speaker 2: Especially one that you are engaged to.
- 24:19Speaker 1: Yeah, she's going to be all, get me stuff and
- 24:21Speaker 1: help me get to places. And it's like, lady, this
- 24:24Speaker 1: is the Super Bowl.
- 24:25Speaker 2: Stop it. Don't do a murder. It's like, fucking stop
- 24:29Speaker 2: stepping on my good time.
- 24:30Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 24:31Speaker 1: Everyone gets to do one murder in the NFL.
- 24:34Speaker 2: It's the Super Bowl, man.
- 24:35Speaker 1: That's where Aaron Hernandez fucked up. He killed more than
- 24:38Speaker 1: one person.
- 24:39Speaker 2: That's the thing. You get one per Super Bowl and
- 24:42Speaker 2: he went bananas, man.
- 24:44Speaker 1: Got to keep it in check. So as they drove away,
- 24:49Speaker 1: for starters, can you imagine you've just pulled off Whether
- 24:53Speaker 1: it was a murder or just a fight that ended
- 24:56Speaker 1: in someone dying, can you imagine that happened and now
- 24:59Speaker 1: your getaway vehicle is a 40-foot long black limousine?
- 25:04Speaker 2: It's going to be a fun chase.
- 25:06Speaker 1: Just blend into traffic.
- 25:08Speaker 2: Blend into traffic. Having Popeye Doyle chasing you down while
- 25:11Speaker 2: you're cruising in a 40-foot limousine.
- 25:15Speaker 1: No officer must have been another 40-foot black limousine.
- 25:19Speaker 2: I love that this has 70s movie villain energy. It
- 25:25Speaker 2: has like blaxploitation villain energy where you would 100% see
- 25:30Speaker 2: this scene in like Superfly or some shit. John Shaft
- 25:34Speaker 2: chasing down a fucking black limousine going down after it
- 25:39Speaker 2: killed some kids in his neighborhood.
- 25:40Speaker 1: Yeah. So they drive away. And as they drive away,
- 25:44Speaker 1: speaking of movie shit, someone opens fire on the limousine
- 25:48Speaker 1: and flattens one of the tires.
- 25:51Speaker 2: That's cool.
- 25:52Speaker 1: That is very cool.
- 25:54Speaker 2: I mean, I know it's like you, you know, firing
- 25:56Speaker 2: a gun into a car, probably not smart, but like, man,
- 25:59Speaker 2: that's cool.
- 26:00Speaker 1: Yeah, it's not nice, but it's cool. It's like when
- 26:02Speaker 1: a hawk carries a cat off into the sky.
- 26:05Speaker 2: You're like, oh.
- 26:08Speaker 1: Oh, wow. That's neat to watch.
- 26:10Speaker 2: Oh, no. Oh, wow.
- 26:12Speaker 1: I don't see that every day.
- 26:14Speaker 2: That's a strong eagle.
- 26:16Speaker 1: According to limo driver Dwayne Fassett, as they were leaving
- 26:20Speaker 1: the scene, Lewis demanded everyone in the car just shut
- 26:24Speaker 1: the fuck up. And it's implied that he was referring
- 26:27Speaker 1: to talking to police about the crime. But he might
- 26:30Speaker 1: have also, people might have just been fussing. And he
- 26:33Speaker 1: was like, hey, shut the fuck up.
- 26:34Speaker 2: I think I hear something. I hear evil outside of
- 26:37Speaker 2: the car. Those are bullets. Those are bullets outside of
- 26:41Speaker 2: the car. Also, you've picked the biggest target for getting
- 26:45Speaker 2: shot of a vehicle. It's a 40-foot limousine. You gotta
- 26:48Speaker 2: be a bad shot to miss that. Yeah, you ain't
- 26:51Speaker 2: a Miata.
- 26:53Speaker 1: The limo driver also said he heard Oakley and Sweeting
- 26:55Speaker 1: bragging about having stabbed the two men police found blood
- 26:59Speaker 1: belonging to the victims inside the limousine and inside Ray
- 27:04Speaker 1: Lewis's hotel room. But by the time they arrived at
- 27:07Speaker 1: that room, he'd fled to his fiance's family home.
- 27:11Speaker 2: I like that. Now he calls up the fiance.
- 27:13Speaker 1: Hey, yeah.
- 27:14Speaker 2: Hey, I need you to hide out. Me and my
- 27:17Speaker 2: girlfriend got into some trouble.
- 27:20Speaker 1: Meanwhile, he does send his girlfriend back to the hotel,
- 27:22Speaker 1: Jessica Robertson to one, uh, burn a photo that she
- 27:27Speaker 1: had taken of the three of them that night and
- 27:30Speaker 1: also to gather up everything that he had at the hotel.
- 27:35Speaker 2: Was she taking uh photos with like a polaroid.
- 27:39Speaker 1: It it would have to be like.
- 27:40Speaker 2: Where did they one hour photo that shit in between
- 27:43Speaker 2: in the club she's like oh my my kodak disposable
- 27:46Speaker 2: camera from 2000 is is it's out let's hold on
- 27:50Speaker 2: i gotta go to the right aid And get this
- 27:52Speaker 2: thing one hour photo printed.
- 27:54Speaker 1: Yeah, I was thinking about that too. It had to
- 27:56Speaker 1: be a Polaroid. 2000, we didn't really have camera phones then.
- 28:01Speaker 2: It's a great year for Polaroids.
- 28:03Speaker 3: 2000.
- 28:04Speaker 1: So, according to police, Lewis' cell phone was unusually active
- 28:10Speaker 1: right after Baker and Lawler were killed. Several eyewitnesses reported
- 28:15Speaker 1: people exiting the limo with what looked like a laundry bag,
- 28:20Speaker 1: which they threw in a dumpster.
- 28:23Speaker 2: I would want to see what's in that. A laundry
- 28:26Speaker 2: bag in a dumpster is going to be from a
- 28:29Speaker 2: limo is filled with either evidence or vomit.
- 28:32Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 28:33Speaker 2: Those are the two options for limo garbage.
- 28:36Speaker 1: In this case, probably both.
- 28:38Speaker 2: A little bit of both.
- 28:39Speaker 1: So it's going to be some nerves that might lead
- 28:42Speaker 1: to some vomit in the back of that.
- 28:43Speaker 2: Let me just shut the fuck up.
- 28:45Speaker 1: I got to vomit.
- 28:46Speaker 2: I got to vomit all the evils out of me.
- 28:48Speaker 1: And that's the big mystery in all of this. Ray
- 28:51Speaker 1: Lewis is adamant that he wore that cream colored suit
- 28:57Speaker 1: with a matching Stetson and turtleneck sweater home that night
- 29:02Speaker 1: or to the hotel that night, but that it somehow
- 29:06Speaker 1: went missing. And that includes the mink coat he was
- 29:11Speaker 1: wearing that night.
- 29:12Speaker 2: Hard to misplace a crisp, cream-colored suit in Stetson.
- 29:17Speaker 1: Especially when you take into account that the other two
- 29:20Speaker 1: people he was with that night also somehow lost their clothes.
- 29:24Speaker 2: What happens in Atlanta?
- 29:27Speaker 1: So the obvious... Maybe it was hot. The obvious suspicion
- 29:31Speaker 1: there is that Ray Lewis threw his bloody suit in
- 29:34Speaker 1: a dumpster. And police never found it, which, why not?
- 29:38Speaker 1: How fast did that dump? get emptied that police couldn't
- 29:42Speaker 1: get to it and get that suit?
- 29:44Speaker 2: Did someone like find the clothes and they're like wearing
- 29:47Speaker 2: it around?
- 29:49Speaker 1: I mean, you could sell that for quite a bit
- 29:52Speaker 1: of money on the sports memorabilia market, I'm sure.
- 29:55Speaker 2: Yeah. Or to one of those like murder museums.
- 29:59Speaker 1: Yeah, Zach Bagans' Haunted Mansion in Las Vegas.
- 30:02Speaker 2: You have two different, you know, that's good. You know
- 30:06Speaker 2: what that has? Cross-cultural appeal.
- 30:09Speaker 1: That's right. It's going to bring in the sports fans
- 30:12Speaker 1: and the murder fans.
- 30:13Speaker 2: It's going to be a lot of goths wearing Ray
- 30:15Speaker 2: Lewis jerseys after this.
- 30:17Speaker 1: The suit thing is the craziest detail to me. I
- 30:20Speaker 1: think it's the craziest detail to everyone because he's obviously lying.
- 30:24Speaker 2: I think the craziest detail is the murder part.
- 30:27Speaker 1: Well, the murder. Yeah. Yeah. But that the smoking gun
- 30:32Speaker 1: evidence in this is a cream colored suit with a
- 30:35Speaker 1: matching Stetson that is just probably caked in blood.
- 30:40Speaker 2: Just I would love to see like they're walking by like,
- 30:43Speaker 2: you know, that movie trope where somebody walks by and
- 30:45Speaker 2: there's like a guy like warming his hands over a
- 30:48Speaker 2: garbage fire. But he's wearing like the Ray Lewis suit.
- 30:51Speaker 2: That he found in a dumpster. Nice suit.
- 30:55Speaker 1: So this, obviously, with all of this evidence, Ray Lewis
- 31:00Speaker 1: and his friends faced a lot of legal ramifications for this.
- 31:04Speaker 1: Just joking. They were arrested. The three of them were
- 31:08Speaker 1: all arrested days after this happened. And they end up
- 31:11Speaker 1: going on trial. But during that trial, one, they're never
- 31:16Speaker 1: able to find Ray Lewis's suit, which is a hindrance
- 31:20Speaker 1: to the prosecution.
- 31:21Speaker 2: That's the problem, yeah.
- 31:22Speaker 1: And also the star witness, who was the limo driver,
- 31:26Speaker 1: Dwayne Fassett, ends up recanting his story and saying he
- 31:31Speaker 1: can't quite remember what was said in the car that night,
- 31:35Speaker 1: which I'm sure is completely on the up and up.
- 31:38Speaker 1: And we won't someday find out he has $ 1. 8 million
- 31:42Speaker 1: in an offshore account in Barbados or something.
- 31:45Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 31:46Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 31:46Speaker 2: He's got his own fleet.
- 31:49Speaker 1: He's got the whites. He did it just for the
- 31:51Speaker 1: white suit.
- 31:52Speaker 2: Yeah. He's got an autographed Stetson. That's like his fucking
- 31:56Speaker 2: limo logo. Yeah. Bloody Stetson limo service.
- 32:01Speaker 1: Shows up on Antiques Roadshow with it.
- 32:03Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 32:04Speaker 2: So this was done in a murder. It's autographed here.
- 32:08Speaker 2: You could see.
- 32:09Speaker 1: So as a result of that, Ray Lewis was able
- 32:13Speaker 1: to strike a deal where all other charges were dropped
- 32:17Speaker 1: in exchange for him. One, pleading guilty to a charge
- 32:20Speaker 1: of obstruction of justice, and two, testifying against his two friends.
- 32:25Speaker 1: What a guy. What a guy.
- 32:27Speaker 2: Ray Lewis, the official mascot of snitching.
- 32:30Speaker 1: He was Tekashi69 before we even knew who that guy was.
- 32:34Speaker 2: Which is funny that he's obstructing justice while snitching.
- 32:38Speaker 1: That is strange.
- 32:39Speaker 2: It's like, I don't know, man. Maybe just do the
- 32:41Speaker 2: whole thing. I mean, you're already there.
- 32:43Speaker 1: On the bright side, though, at least for his two friends...
- 32:46Speaker 1: I don't know if this is actually a bright side,
- 32:48Speaker 1: but Oakley and Sweeting were acquitted after entering a plea
- 32:53Speaker 1: of self-defense. And here's the thing. We're saying a lot
- 32:56Speaker 1: of stuff about Ray Lewis killed a guy, but this
- 33:00Speaker 1: is kind of different from the Tony Stewart thing.
- 33:06Speaker 2: Ray Lewis got a nice assist. He's like the John
- 33:09Speaker 2: Stockton of murdering a guy.
- 33:11Speaker 1: He got an assist, and we really don't know how
- 33:15Speaker 1: much of this was self-defense. Because there was obviously an altercation,
- 33:21Speaker 1: and if Oakley got hit in the head with a
- 33:24Speaker 1: champagne bottle first, then, I mean, those two were probably
- 33:29Speaker 1: kind of the aggressor. And I feel like if Ray
- 33:32Speaker 1: Lewis wasn't involved, no one would think anything of of
- 33:36Speaker 1: this being self-defense.
- 33:38Speaker 2: I think a lot of it comes down to how
- 33:40Speaker 2: Ray Lewis handled the situation being a person in the
- 33:42Speaker 2: public eye. You know, yeah, probably was self-defense. Like, let's
- 33:48Speaker 2: be honest. But also, you know, we're talking about killing
- 33:51Speaker 2: a person. We're not saying, hey, Ray Lewis committed a
- 33:53Speaker 2: cold-blooded murder. It's like, no, but he definitely may have
- 33:59Speaker 2: killed a guy or assisted in killing a guy.
- 34:01Speaker 1: Yeah, and if it's self-defense... You should kind of be
- 34:05Speaker 1: able to just hang around and wait for the police
- 34:07Speaker 1: to show up and be like, self-defense, man.
- 34:10Speaker 2: I mean, to be fair, a group of wealthy black
- 34:14Speaker 2: men in Atlanta might be a little wary of the police.
- 34:17Speaker 3: Why?
- 34:17Speaker 2: Did something happen? They're racist. Oh. Oh, yeah.
- 34:22Speaker 1: I guess I didn't even think about that.
- 34:24Speaker 2: Yeah, no, the police are racist.
- 34:26Speaker 1: So when we wonder why this didn't derail Ray Lewis's career,
- 34:29Speaker 1: that's why he got off. He was found like he
- 34:34Speaker 1: went through the justice system. Yeah.
- 34:37Speaker 2: Yeah, he did.
- 34:39Speaker 1: It's the same thing as Michael Vick. Like Michael Vick
- 34:41Speaker 1: did his time. He went through the justice system and
- 34:45Speaker 1: he came out the other end and it was able
- 34:48Speaker 1: to resume his career.
- 34:50Speaker 2: I would say that there are some staunch differences because, um, Uh, well,
- 34:56Speaker 2: I'd say that, uh, Michael Vick, uh, went to jail.
- 34:59Speaker 1: Ray Lewis went to jail. Briefly.
- 35:01Speaker 2: He was like held.
- 35:02Speaker 1: He, well, he, no, he was in jail for a
- 35:05Speaker 1: few weeks.
- 35:05Speaker 2: And also, um, I would like to say that Ray Lewis, uh,
- 35:08Speaker 2: versus Michael Vick, uh, Michael Vick made the mistake of
- 35:11Speaker 2: not being involved in the murder of a person.
- 35:14Speaker 1: Wow, you're really, you're really going to go to, go
- 35:16Speaker 1: to the technicalities right out of the gate.
- 35:18Speaker 3: Huh?
- 35:18Speaker 2: Well, like people were, you know, like, uh, Ray Lewis
- 35:22Speaker 2: was simply involved in the murder of two human beings,
- 35:25Speaker 2: which is fine, which is why we forgive him. But
- 35:29Speaker 2: Ray Lewis made the mistake of killing dogs. And so he,
- 35:33Speaker 2: white women will never love the Philadelphia Eagles. Right.
- 35:37Speaker 3: Right.
- 35:37Speaker 2: After that.
- 35:38Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 35:38Speaker 1: That's a good point. Yeah. I don't know. It's, People
- 35:41Speaker 1: wanted Ray Lewis's career to be over because of this.
- 35:44Speaker 1: It seemed like, but I mean, you know.
- 35:49Speaker 2: Only people in the AFC East. Nobody, nobody really like,
- 35:54Speaker 2: I remember it being like, not that big of a deal.
- 35:57Speaker 2: Like who wanted, who demanded his career be over Rick
- 36:00Speaker 2: Riley and that's it.
- 36:02Speaker 1: Yeah, Ben Roethlisberger, and we're like, no, we want him
- 36:05Speaker 1: to kill you next.
- 36:06Speaker 2: Yeah, Ben Roethlisberger's like, Ray Lewis is stopping me from
- 36:09Speaker 2: committing all sorts of sexual assaults. Let me tell you,
- 36:13Speaker 2: the AFC in 2000, y'all can hate the Patriots all
- 36:16Speaker 2: you want, but.
- 36:18Speaker 1: I don't think Roethlisberger was playing by that point, though.
- 36:20Speaker 1: I'm conflating some different areas. 2000, he's still playing right now. Oh, yeah.
- 36:26Speaker 2: Who's that, Cordell Stewart?
- 36:28Speaker 1: Probably. Tom Brady was playing by 2000.
- 36:30Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 36:31Speaker 1: So it's not like there were zero ramifications, Jeff. Let
- 36:36Speaker 1: me tell you about some of the things Ray Lewis
- 36:39Speaker 1: had to endure.
- 36:40Speaker 2: Must've been hard.
- 36:41Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 36:41Speaker 1: Some of the things Jesus had to see him through
- 36:45Speaker 1: in the days following this, which here's the thing. He
- 36:48Speaker 1: was asked about this years and years and years later
- 36:51Speaker 1: in an interview and asked whether he regretted it. And
- 36:54Speaker 1: he was like, no, it made me the person I am. So,
- 36:58Speaker 1: you know, like what?
- 37:00Speaker 2: You already about christ and in the nfl like what
- 37:03Speaker 2: more did you.
- 37:03Speaker 1: Get what a crazy fucking answer.
- 37:07Speaker 2: No i don't regret the murder.
- 37:08Speaker 1: The following season though finally justice was served because one
- 37:14Speaker 1: the ravens won the superbowl and ray lewis was named
- 37:17Speaker 1: superbowl mvp but jeff i know you remember for the
- 37:22Speaker 1: longest time and i don't think this even happens anymore
- 37:25Speaker 1: but at the end of the superbowl camera crew would
- 37:29Speaker 1: run up to the super bowl mvp and say hey
- 37:32Speaker 1: tom brady you just won the super bowl what are
- 37:35Speaker 1: you going to do next and they would say i'm
- 37:38Speaker 1: going to disneyland but here's the thing.
- 37:41Speaker 2: Jeff yeah oh yeah.
- 37:42Speaker 1: Ray lewis didn't get to say i'm going to disneyland
- 37:46Speaker 1: oh no simply because he was involved in a possible
- 37:49Speaker 1: murder in atlanta season prior trent dilfer was allowed to
- 37:56Speaker 1: say I'm going to Disneyland.
- 37:58Speaker 2: Professional player to be named later, Trent Dilfer. Man, shout
- 38:04Speaker 2: out to Baltimore quarterbacks for getting a lot of credit
- 38:09Speaker 2: for all of the work that the Baltimore defense does.
- 38:12Speaker 1: I love when a shitty team or when a shitty
- 38:15Speaker 1: quarterback wins a Super Bowl. That always kind of makes
- 38:18Speaker 1: me happy.
- 38:19Speaker 2: Yeah, that is a team effort.
- 38:21Speaker 1: Like even when Rex Grossman just took the Bears to
- 38:24Speaker 1: a Super Bowl. Like, look what our shitty quarterback did
- 38:27Speaker 1: that your quarterback can't do.
- 38:29Speaker 2: I mean, that's what we thought with Tom Brady in
- 38:31Speaker 2: the beginning. We're like, look at this guy taking over
- 38:33Speaker 2: for Drew Bledsoe. And now we're like, oh, Drew Bledsoe
- 38:35Speaker 2: may have been holding us back.
- 38:36Speaker 1: Yeah, that was this is the same era when all
- 38:39Speaker 1: that happened to a little less dramatic. There was no
- 38:43Speaker 1: Tom Brady didn't murder Drew Bledsoe. I mean, he murdered
- 38:46Speaker 1: his hopes and dreams.
- 38:48Speaker 2: Drew Bledsoe. I think people started to realize that Drew
- 38:50Speaker 2: Bledsoe plays football like a mummy. Where he just kind
- 38:55Speaker 2: of stands there and hopes he doesn't get murdered while
- 38:58Speaker 2: he's figuring out who to throw to.
- 39:00Speaker 1: Ray Lewis has a fantastic quote about... being snubbed from
- 39:06Speaker 1: the i'm going to disneyland moment here goes i wasn't
- 39:10Speaker 1: going there anyway i have kids who were not going
- 39:13Speaker 1: to let me go to disney world they wanted to
- 39:15Speaker 1: see me which implies that he would have gone to
- 39:18Speaker 1: disney world by himself and left his kids at home.
- 39:21Speaker 2: Just ray lewis going to disney world like alone sitting
- 39:26Speaker 2: on like it's a small world and shit i love
- 39:29Speaker 2: it so much. Just in the Pirates of the Caribbean
- 39:32Speaker 2: being like, look at all the evil that they show here.
- 39:35Speaker 2: There's so much evil. You call it crime. You call
- 39:38Speaker 2: it crime, but it's evil.
- 39:40Speaker 1: Taking pictures for his kids and having his girlfriend burn them.
- 39:43Speaker 2: By the way, they held the Giants to seven points
- 39:46Speaker 2: that Super Bowl. Like Ray Lewis deserved that MVP.
- 39:51Speaker 1: Yeah. I also remember it being one of the most
- 39:55Speaker 1: cripplingly boring Super Bowls of all time for that exact reason.
- 39:59Speaker 2: Well, blowouts are always boring.
- 40:00Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 40:01Speaker 1: I hate it so much. He was also left off
- 40:04Speaker 1: the Ravens commemorative Wheaties box the next year, which that's
- 40:08Speaker 1: got to sting a little bit.
- 40:11Speaker 2: That's okay because my kids don't like me eating wheat.
- 40:14Speaker 2: That was the year of, that halftime show was fucking awesome,
- 40:19Speaker 2: by the way. Is that the one they won?
- 40:20Speaker 1: Is that the Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Aerosmith one?
- 40:25Speaker 2: Yep, where Nelly showed up in the double jersey. Yeah.
- 40:31Speaker 2: Mary J. Blige was there.
- 40:32Speaker 1: That was a very good halftime show.
- 40:34Speaker 2: That was a rad as fuck halftime show.
- 40:37Speaker 1: And people, because it was Britney Spears, people acted like
- 40:40Speaker 1: they hated it. It's like, get over yourselves.
- 40:43Speaker 2: I love when they're like, we have a pop star
- 40:45Speaker 2: doing the halftime show. And all these football fans are like, well,
- 40:49Speaker 2: since when are we inviting pop stars to the Super Bowl?
- 40:52Speaker 2: And it's like, literally forever.
- 40:54Speaker 1: Since the... Early 90s at best.
- 40:57Speaker 2: Oh, just because millions of people enjoy it? Why can't
- 41:00Speaker 2: we put ZZ Top in there?
- 41:03Speaker 1: I'd fuck with the ZZ Top halftime show.
- 41:05Speaker 2: ZZ Top is drastically underrated in the annals of rock
- 41:10Speaker 2: and roll history, by the way.
- 41:11Speaker 1: I saw them in concert in 2013 just by chance.
- 41:16Speaker 1: I was at a music festival and they were one
- 41:18Speaker 1: of the headlining acts. And I was like, yeah, I
- 41:20Speaker 1: guess I'll go see ZZ Top. Oh my God, it
- 41:23Speaker 1: was so much fun.
- 41:25Speaker 2: They have like all of their songs are like about
- 41:29Speaker 2: like getting and then appreciating sex or like, or like
- 41:34Speaker 2: how to look cool. And like, that's fucking, that's such
- 41:37Speaker 2: rock and roll to me.
- 41:39Speaker 1: And then they covered a song. I still, to this day,
- 41:42Speaker 1: don't know if they realize this. They covered a song
- 41:44Speaker 1: called 25 lighters where the guy says, I got 25
- 41:48Speaker 1: lighters on my dresser. Yes, sir. That is 150% a
- 41:50Speaker 1: song about selling crack.
- 41:53Speaker 2: I would think so.
- 41:54Speaker 1: And ZZ Top covered it, and their cover is spectacular.
- 41:58Speaker 2: I would say that I would fuck with, like, if
- 42:01Speaker 2: somebody was like, hey, do you want to pay $ 30
- 42:03Speaker 2: to watch ZZ Top do just cheap sunglasses twice and
- 42:06Speaker 2: then leave? I'd be like, yep.
- 42:08Speaker 1: Yeah, why not?
- 42:08Speaker 2: I absolutely want to see that.
- 42:10Speaker 1: So don't worry, people. Ray Lewis did eventually get his
- 42:15Speaker 1: endorsement career back on track. It took a long, long time.
- 42:19Speaker 1: But by 2005, he was on the cover of Madden,
- 42:22Speaker 1: and things were mostly back to normal.
- 42:23Speaker 2: Roughly three years.
- 42:25Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 42:25Speaker 2: When you talk about like the process of the decision,
- 42:28Speaker 2: they put him on Madden this year. That's the year
- 42:30Speaker 2: that the Madden curse was actually retroactive.
- 42:35Speaker 1: Yeah. That's when the Madden curse started taking out people
- 42:37Speaker 1: around the athlete also.
- 42:39Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 42:40Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 42:40Speaker 2: It was like a pig pen cloud of curse because
- 42:44Speaker 2: he was fine. He didn't get cursed, right?
- 42:46Speaker 1: No, I don't think so.
- 42:48Speaker 2: Yeah, that's one of those things where it's like, he
- 42:49Speaker 2: survived a fucking murder rap. Madden ain't coming after him.
- 42:54Speaker 1: It is funny, though, that throughout the rest of his career,
- 42:58Speaker 1: I'm sure even when he made the Madden cover, every
- 43:02Speaker 1: single time something Ray Lewis related happened, there would be
- 43:06Speaker 1: articles about the fact that he maybe killed a guy
- 43:08Speaker 1: after the Super Bowl.
- 43:10Speaker 2: That should kind of float around him. Of course.
- 43:13Speaker 1: Like, it's a cloud that should follow you because- If
- 43:17Speaker 1: for nothing else, how many athletes are going to clubs
- 43:22Speaker 1: and partying all the time and not having this happen?
- 43:26Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 43:27Speaker 2: Eddie Murphy's girl, for example, she wants to party all
- 43:29Speaker 2: the time. Never murdered anybody.
- 43:32Speaker 1: All the time.
- 43:33Speaker 2: Although Rick James was a producer of that, so a
- 43:35Speaker 2: murder probably happened.
- 43:36Speaker 1: He probably murdered that girl. So he reached a settlement
- 43:42Speaker 1: with the family, which I think you would expect. He
- 43:45Speaker 1: paid them off. And I don't want to say paid
- 43:47Speaker 1: them off. That makes it sound like they were just
- 43:50Speaker 1: in it for money. But they were never going to
- 43:52Speaker 1: really get any other form of justice. So I'm assuming
- 43:55Speaker 1: they filed a civil suit at some point.
- 43:58Speaker 2: And that civil suit, cream colored.
- 44:03Speaker 1: And covered in blood and in a dumpster somewhere. He's
- 44:06Speaker 1: also in the Hall of Fame. Ray Lewis is in
- 44:08Speaker 1: the Hall of Fame now. We can't let Barry Bonds
- 44:12Speaker 1: in for tacking a few steroid years onto his already
- 44:17Speaker 1: Hall of Fame career, but Ray Lewis can almost maybe
- 44:21Speaker 1: have killed a guy.
- 44:22Speaker 2: Murder don't fuck with your stats.
- 44:24Speaker 1: Yeah, that's true.
- 44:26Speaker 2: Sports writers are like, oh no, the murder helped me.
- 44:28Speaker 1: I mean, I guess it makes sense that Ray Lewis
- 44:31Speaker 1: should be in the Hall of Fame.
- 44:33Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 44:33Speaker 2: I mean, here's the question. Here's where it really comes
- 44:36Speaker 2: down to. Michael Vick. See?
- 44:38Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 44:39Speaker 2: Do you think he'll make it?
- 44:41Speaker 1: Michael Vick, for me, it's not even the dogfighting thing.
- 44:45Speaker 1: It just was Michael Vick. He was good.
- 44:48Speaker 2: He did lose a couple of seasons.
- 44:50Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 44:52Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't know. The Hall of Fame is complicated.
- 44:54Speaker 1: The Baseball Hall of Fame, that's probably a bad comparison anyway.
- 44:58Speaker 1: When Hank Aaron died recently, there was talk about when
- 45:03Speaker 1: he got inducted into the Hall of Fame. And there's
- 45:05Speaker 1: never been a unanimous ballot Hall of Famer. No one
- 45:11Speaker 1: has ever gotten all of the votes, I believe.
- 45:14Speaker 2: Mariano Rivera?
- 45:15Speaker 1: Did he? I don't know.
- 45:16Speaker 2: I think he might have.
- 45:18Speaker 1: But Hank Aaron did not. And they were like, who,
- 45:22Speaker 1: who were you? Who, who were you? 8% of sports
- 45:26Speaker 1: writers who decided Hank Aaron did not deserve to be
- 45:29Speaker 1: in the hall of fame. And there's only one reason
- 45:32Speaker 1: why you would think that it's because you're a fucking
- 45:34Speaker 1: racist piece of shit.
- 45:36Speaker 2: Um, yeah. Mariano Rivera, the first player ever unanimously voted
- 45:40Speaker 2: into the baseball hall.
- 45:41Speaker 1: So by that point, by the point, Hank Aaron.
- 45:43Speaker 2: Yes. Oh yeah.
- 45:44Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 45:44Speaker 2: Mariano Rivera got it. Like, uh, like, In 2019 or
- 45:48Speaker 2: something like that.
- 45:49Speaker 1: Hooray, progress. Anyway, Ray Lewis is in the Hall of Fame.
- 45:52Speaker 1: Good for him. Something else that effectively died that night,
- 45:55Speaker 1: as we talked about a little bit earlier, is the
- 45:58Speaker 1: neighborhood this happened in. It was, at the time, Atlanta
- 46:01Speaker 1: was this up-and-coming area where all of these young professional types,
- 46:07Speaker 1: rich people, were just flocking to Atlanta.
- 46:09Speaker 2: It's where the players play.
- 46:11Speaker 1: It's where the players play.
- 46:13Speaker 3: And.
- 46:14Speaker 1: This particular neighborhood, Buckhead, where this club they were at,
- 46:17Speaker 1: which was called the Cobalt, was like the party spot
- 46:21Speaker 1: in Atlanta at the time. But it had also started
- 46:24Speaker 1: to sort of get a reputation for fights and drugs
- 46:28Speaker 1: and crime and, you know, the things that were happening
- 46:32Speaker 1: in mid-90s to 2000s American cities in their party spots.
- 46:38Speaker 1: But this incident kind of killed that neighborhood. because people
- 46:43Speaker 1: were already on edge about the things that had been
- 46:47Speaker 1: happening there. And then once Ray Lewis definitely did not
- 46:52Speaker 1: stab two people in the parking lot of the cobalt
- 46:55Speaker 1: police and city council swung in, put all these extra
- 46:58Speaker 1: regulations in place. Cobalt was closed within seven months and
- 47:04Speaker 1: most of the other bars around it closed a few
- 47:06Speaker 1: years later. So Ray Lewis murdered nightlife in Atlanta. And
- 47:11Speaker 1: to this day, There's nothing to do in that city.
- 47:14Speaker 2: No, it's a dead city.
- 47:16Speaker 1: Past 9 p.m.? Might as well fucking drive to Athens.
- 47:20Speaker 2: You should drive to Athens, though.
- 47:21Speaker 1: Athens is great. I did a show there. It was wonderful.
- 47:24Speaker 1: They put me on the marquee. It was great.
- 47:26Speaker 2: I like that.
- 47:27Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 47:28Speaker 2: Thanks, Athens.
- 47:29Speaker 1: Athens was fun. I've never been to Atlanta.
- 47:30Speaker 2: You Greek bitch city.
- 47:31Speaker 1: Never been to Atlanta except for the airport.
- 47:34Speaker 2: I heard the food's fantastic. I bet.
- 47:36Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 47:37Speaker 1: I had good pizza in Athens. So anyway, Ray Lewis
- 47:40Speaker 1: did not murder a guy. Ray Lewis simply leaned against
- 47:44Speaker 1: a limousine while his two friends maybe stabbed a couple guys.
- 47:48Speaker 1: And they did it in self-defense, Jeff. And that is
- 47:51Speaker 1: the decision of the courts.
- 47:53Speaker 2: Welcome to Atlanta, where the players die. Where the players
- 47:56Speaker 2: get off.
- 47:58Speaker 1: So that leads, I think, to a really obvious question,
- 48:02Speaker 1: which with the Super Bowl happening this weekend... Let's do
- 48:06Speaker 1: some predictions. Who's going to get murdered?
- 48:11Speaker 2: Whoever is trying to go after Tom Brady.
- 48:15Speaker 1: I'm going to put my money on The Weeknd. He's
- 48:17Speaker 1: doing the halftime show, and that guy seems like a
- 48:20Speaker 1: loose cannon. I could see him pulling some shit and
- 48:24Speaker 1: getting in an alter case and getting stabbed by Ray Lewis.
- 48:27Speaker 2: People will be like, is that The Weeknd, the guy
- 48:30Speaker 2: from Uncut Gems? Exactly.
- 48:32Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 48:33Speaker 2: God, that's a good movie.
- 48:34Speaker 1: That's such a fucking great movie.
- 48:36Speaker 2: So stressful.
- 48:37Speaker 1: I've watched it like four times. And every time I'm like,
- 48:40Speaker 1: why am I doing this?
- 48:41Speaker 2: I told you when I saw him backstage at Conan,
- 48:44Speaker 2: I was like, man, I am salivating to see this
- 48:46Speaker 2: fucking movie.
- 48:47Speaker 1: It was so goddamn good.
- 48:50Speaker 2: Just show me it. Show me the movie, Adam.
- 48:52Speaker 1: So good.
- 48:53Speaker 2: So good.
- 48:54Speaker 4: But, uh. that's our episode yeah we we're done we
- 48:58Speaker 4: did it we did it we did a sport we
- 49:01Speaker 4: did a sport thing i swear we're gonna get to
- 49:03Speaker 4: that that soccer season here real soon.
- 49:07Speaker 2: But researching soccer is like watching soccer.
- 49:10Speaker 1: Yeah i watched a documentary about that dude the other
- 49:13Speaker 1: night and i fell asleep about halfway through but i
- 49:16Speaker 1: might have just been tired i mean i was obviously
- 49:18Speaker 1: tired i fell asleep but.
- 49:20Speaker 2: As soon as scenes of soccer hit, you're like, ah.
- 49:22Speaker 1: I can't do it. Yeah, I instinctively fall asleep. But
- 49:26Speaker 1: we'll get to it. In the meantime, do we have
- 49:29Speaker 1: anything to plug? Before we get out of here?
- 49:32Speaker 2: I think we do.
- 49:34Speaker 1: Jeff?
- 49:34Speaker 2: We do. Sideshow Sideshow is every other Tuesday through Sideshow Collectibles.
- 49:38Speaker 2: You can check that out. Also, every Tuesday on Sideshow,
- 49:42Speaker 2: I have my live show, Unsealed and Revealed, and that
- 49:44Speaker 2: is at 10 a.m. Pacific Standard Time across all of

- 49:50Speaker 2: and Jeff Watch Batman on Wednesdays on the Gamefully Unemployed Network.
- 49:53Speaker 2: And also, Adam, Todd Brown doesn't like sports.

- 49:59Speaker 2: That is true.
- 50:02Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't have anything. Follow me on Twitter and
- 50:05Speaker 1: Instagram at AdamToddBrown. Let's get the fuck out of here.
- 50:12Speaker 2: Okay.
- 50:13Speaker 1: Jeff, say goodbye. You get the Ray Lewis may have
- 50:18Speaker 1: killed a guy rookie card. Goodbye, everybody. We killed you.
- 50:23Speaker 2: Bye. Sorry for killing you.
