The Parable of the Lost Sheep
God never leaves the lost sheep behind. This parable is the first in a series of 3 parables of the same issue. The issue is that something valuable is lost. The second parable is the lost coin, and the final third parable is the lost son, which is the most important and well known. Jesus communicates the great value of a human soul that is lost and the urgency of seeking the lost to restore them to relationship with God.
