Latest / The Slippery Slope / Australia to set minimum age for children using social media
Transcript
- 0:10Hi, I'm Jay Fallon, thanks for listening to The Slippery Slope.
- 0:14So if you're in Australia, you would have heard about this
- 0:17story, I'm assuming because it was all over the news for for a
- 0:22couple of days. And that's how the government
- 0:25has now decided. Well, Nah, let me backtrack
- 0:29backpack a little. It's not that the government has
- 0:32now just suddenly decided. The government has been doing
- 0:35this for quite a long time and we have been allowing them to do
- 0:38it. The government decided quite
- 0:41some time ago that they were better parents than mum and dad.
- 0:46If you had children. The Australian government and
- 0:49state governments, they think they are better, they are more
- 0:53suited to parent your child. That's the desire.
- 0:58That's their desire. That's what that's what they're
- 1:00telling everyone that's in going by the the way we've been
- 1:04legislated, that's what you'd have to assume.
- 1:08You know, we're no longer allowed to discipline, can't
- 1:12discipline your children can't raise your voice.
- 1:14You have to even these days we're taught in our daycare
- 1:18system, kidney systems, that some teachers, and this is
- 1:21factual. You have to you're supposed to
- 1:25be asking consent from a baby. I'm talking like however young
- 1:30they're allowed to come into childcare.
- 1:33A baby, you're supposed to be asking consent before you change
- 1:38a dirty nappy asking consent. I mean, the baby is most likely
- 1:46uncomfortable. Shouldn't be sitting in a nappy
- 1:49that's been soiled. It's it's it's not good.
- 1:53It's unhealthy. And yet you're supposed to wait
- 1:55till you're supposed to get consent, gain consent.
- 1:58You're supposed to make time, make time for the baby, you
- 2:02know, just lay them down and talk to them gently.
- 2:05And, you know, my, I'm about to change a nap here.
- 2:08It's dirty. Is that OK?
- 2:10And then give space for the child, apparently to, I don't
- 2:15know, go goo goo Gaga. Yeah, that's right.
- 2:19As long as the child's happy, then that's all right.
- 2:22That's what they'll do. It's a weird time, but this is
- 2:25what's happened in Australia. The Australian government have
- 2:28decided they are better parents than you or I.
- 2:31They know best. So they've now decided that
- 2:36they're going to set, they're going to legislate a minimum age
- 2:40for children in Australia to use social media.
- 2:44Now, I may be a little old fashioned, just a little old
- 2:48fashioned, but I always thought that that kind of thing.
- 2:51If you're a parent, well, then that's the parent's
- 2:54responsibility. Parents, you're supposed to be
- 2:58parents to your children, OK? You're not out there trying to
- 3:04be the best friend, trying to be the mate.
- 3:07You don't have to get along. You have to train your child,
- 3:11train your child. You have you're supposed to be
- 3:15guiding your child so your child can have a good fulfilling life,
- 3:21so your child can grow up, be a decent human being, have ethics,
- 3:26have morals. Train them to do good.
- 3:30Train them to obey the law of the land.
- 3:32Train them. If you're a Christian, which I
- 3:34hope you would be, train them in the ways of the Bible, biblical
- 3:40principles, biblical morals, godly ways that you're supposed
- 3:45to discipline your child. If you don't want, how can I say
- 3:51it? Well, if you don't want your
- 3:54child to end up being a a prick of an adult, a little criminal,
- 3:59you're supposed to discipline. Train them.
- 4:03Discipline them when they do wrong.
- 4:06It doesn't mean you just flog the heck out of them.
- 4:10Doesn't mean you just, you know, 'cause, injuries, bruises.
- 4:14No, but you are supposed to set boundaries for your children.
- 4:19Set boundaries. Funny enough, parents need to
- 4:24behave like parents. And this is the problem.
- 4:28For decades, literally decades, we've had successive governments
- 4:33tell us that they know better than parents, that they can do
- 4:39things better, that we're not allowed to discipline, otherwise
- 4:45parents will get in trouble. And you know, and then even at
- 4:50the moment here in Queensland, we've had we, we have a real
- 4:54problem with youth crime and that's you don't think there's
- 4:59any correlation. The government doesn't seem to
- 5:02see that there's a correlation between high youth crime and and
- 5:09tying parents hands behind their back when it comes to discipline
- 5:13or not encouraging the family unit.
- 5:18You know, the good old mom, dad and child.
- 5:20No, no encouraging making it easy or single parent houses.
- 5:26And and that's not not attacking single parent houses.
- 5:29Some sometimes that has to happen.
- 5:31The, The thing is, the government's made it easier for
- 5:34that to happen where young, well, young males don't feel,
- 5:40don't see that they have a responsibility to look after
- 5:43their children. And young females, well, they
- 5:48don't see the responsibility at all or the necessity to have a
- 5:51father involved in their children's lives either, because
- 5:54they've been told by governments, well, it's all
- 5:55right. We'll look after you, we'll help
- 5:57you, we'll give you money. You know, you know, you don't
- 6:00need the father if you don't want the father.
- 6:01So that's, that's all good. We're just going to pay you and
- 6:04we'll make him pay. And they said to father as well,
- 6:08as long as you pay money, you don't have to really take
- 6:11responsibility for your child. And this is where we've gone
- 6:15wrong as a society. So we've got governments telling
- 6:18us for a couple of generations now that they know better.
- 6:25So I'll bring up this article. This is what's happened here in
- 6:27Australia. Absolutely ridiculous.
- 6:31Absolutely, this is a scourge. This is from the National Post,
- 6:35This is a scourge. It says Australia to set minimum
- 6:38age for children using social media.
- 6:41Subheading says we know that there is mental health
- 6:43consequences for what many of the young people have had to
- 6:46deal with. Well, maybe there is.
- 6:48I don't don't doubt it. But that's because also parents
- 6:52aren't being involved in their children's lives.
- 6:55Take some flippin responsibility, parents, take
- 6:59some responsibility. The onus is on you, the burden's
- 7:03on you to be the parent. So the Australian government was
- 7:07last Tuesday promised to legislate this year to enforce a
- 7:12minimum age for children to access social media, but it has
- 7:15yet to announce how ages will be verified.
- 7:21Goodness. So several countries and U.S.
- 7:23states are attempting to legislate to spare children harm
- 7:27from social media, including bullying.
- 7:30Now this is this is the problem. You can't disagree with that.
- 7:34They come in and say, well, this is for the benefit of the child.
- 7:37Children are getting harmed online.
- 7:39So this is to protect them. So no one, you can't stand up
- 7:42and protest because who are you? That's disgusting.
- 7:46We're, we're only here to help the child.
- 7:48There's nothing else, nothing else happening, nothing else
- 7:51nefarious happening behind the scenes.
- 7:54So you can't really protest about it, can you?
- 7:56No, because you have to agree with what the government's
- 8:00saying. That's the way they frame it.
- 8:01That is the way they front frame it.
- 8:04So goes on. The Australian move comes as
- 8:09parents increasing call for their children to be protected
- 8:12online. See, they tell you that parents
- 8:14are increasing calls for their children to be protected, but
- 8:19it's the parents responsibility to protect the child.
- 8:22They should be monitoring, they should be limiting, they should
- 8:25be pulling the access themselves.
- 8:27But parents don't understand how to be parents anymore.
- 8:31We, we've raised up a whole generation of parents who think
- 8:35that gentle parenting is actually a thing.
- 8:40I'll tell you something. Let me tell you something.
- 8:45I'll tell you this for free. Gentle parenting is stupid.
- 8:50Absolutely stupid. If you practise gentle
- 8:54parenting, I am sorry if this if you find this insulting.
- 8:58There's nothing biblical about it.
- 9:01It's just if you look into what gentle parenting is, it is
- 9:06pathetic and dumb and you will not raise a disciplined
- 9:12functioning adult. You're very unlikely to anyway.
- 9:18It's just my to Bob's worth it anyway.
- 9:23So it goes on to say we're committed to introducing
- 9:25legislation before the end of this year for age verification
- 9:29to make sure that we get young people away from this social
- 9:31harm, Albanese told Australian Broadcasting Corp the ABC.
- 9:37This is a scourge, He said. We know that there is mental
- 9:40health consequences for what many of the young people have
- 9:43had to deal with, the bullying that can occur online, the
- 9:45access to material which causes social harm and parents are
- 9:49wanting a response or parents don't want a response from you.
- 9:53Elbow parents need to step up and be parents.
- 10:02I've said it before, I'll say it again.
- 10:05Parents need to step up and be parents.
- 10:08Stop relying on the government to make the rules for your
- 10:14children. When your children are in your
- 10:16home, in their bedroom, doing stuff, go in there and make sure
- 10:20they're doing the right thing. Limit their access yourself, you
- 10:28numbskull parents. What is going on here?
- 10:30Why? Why is everyone suddenly relying
- 10:33on the government to make these rules?
- 10:36It's just crazy. Do it yourself.
- 10:40Anyway, I want to go back because this is one thing.
- 10:44I think this is where the dangerous thing comes.
- 10:47And this is, like I said, they, they frame the narrative as
- 10:53though, well, we're protecting the child.
- 10:55So, you know, you can't, you can't protest this.
- 11:00We're protecting the child. However, he says here committed
- 11:07to introducing legislation before the the end of this year
- 11:10for age verification to make sure that we get young people
- 11:14away from social media age verification.
- 11:18I believe, OK, this is just, this is just a way for the
- 11:24Australian government, another way for the Australian
- 11:27Government to try and get more information about its citizens.
- 11:32At the moment all the information that they get, you
- 11:35know, from the censors, from people who have licences and
- 11:37bank accounts and all that stuff, but it's just another way
- 11:40for them to track who's who in the zoo.
- 11:43They'll just be scraping all that information while this is
- 11:46our children, this is what they're up to, that's all.
- 11:49This is another way for them to steal our informations, to steal
- 11:54the information of our children in a back door way, to get in,
- 12:00to get more, to gain more information about families.
- 12:04I don't think this is about protecting the children at all
- 12:08at all. I think parents, like I said,
- 12:10should be stepping up. But I think the reality is we're
- 12:14just seeing the government taking away more of our privacy,
- 12:20more of our privacy. And well, as the director of
- 12:25ASIO just said just the other week, well, you know, for people
- 12:28who are concerned about privacy, well, if you're not doing
- 12:31anything wrong, no one's looking at you.
- 12:33So you have privacy, which is a very warped way of looking at
- 12:38it. And it means that in reality you
- 12:40don't have privacy at all. But this is the Australian
- 12:44government. That's easier.
- 12:45That's what they think. This isn't about protecting your
- 12:47children. This is about stealing more
- 12:50information. It's nothing to do with
- 12:54protecting children and parents. Step up, do your job.
- 13:00That's my opinion. My name is Jay Fallon.
- 13:05Thanks for listening to the Slippery Slope.
