Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: Who's Helping You Rally When Things Feel Hard?
Transcript
- 0:18Speaker 1: Hey everyone, Emily body here. You are listening to five
- 0:22Speaker 1: Minute Friday from Hurdle. Y'all, this week has been a
- 0:26Speaker 1: beautiful week in New York, like we finally got the
- 0:30Speaker 1: summer that we've been waiting for, just in time for
- 0:34Speaker 1: me to bring in another year. My birthday was on Monday.
- 0:38Speaker 1: I had the most beautiful week enjoying life honestly with friends,
- 0:45Speaker 1: celebrating by spending time in the sun, going out to dinner,
- 0:50Speaker 1: and just enjoying the little things. On Wednesday of this week,
- 0:57Speaker 1: for all of those that may celebrate, was Global Run Day,
- 1:00Speaker 1: and as a part of that day, I went to
- 1:03Speaker 1: this experience that Nike was putting on in the city.
- 1:06Speaker 1: They gathered different individuals that identify as media perhaps some creators,
- 1:14Speaker 1: and put together a race for us. I ran a
- 1:22Speaker 1: fast mile and there was also an option to do
- 1:26Speaker 1: a relay race and it was a lot of fun. Candidly,
- 1:32Speaker 1: deciding to try to race a mile after two days
- 1:35Speaker 1: of birthday celebrations was questionable on my part. However, it
- 1:39Speaker 1: was a lot of fun and also I had a
- 1:43Speaker 1: moment that I am here to talk to you about today.
- 1:47Speaker 1: I knew that it was going to be tough I
- 1:49Speaker 1: also know that I am planning to race a half
- 1:54Speaker 1: marathon on Saturday in Los Angeles, and so I went
- 1:58Speaker 1: into Whennesday morning's mile time trial with a certain level
- 2:04Speaker 1: of hesitancy. And I'm out there, I do one lap.
- 2:09Speaker 1: I'm on my second lap, and what was happening was
- 2:13Speaker 1: a girlfriend of mine was running with me for the
- 2:16Speaker 1: first two laps, and she was going to switch out
- 2:18Speaker 1: with another good friend of mine for the second two laps.
- 2:21Speaker 1: And as we're getting to the halfway point, finishing off
- 2:25Speaker 1: that second of four laps, I say to my girlfriend
- 2:28Speaker 1: that's running with me. I say, I think I'm going
- 2:30Speaker 1: to scratch this. Like it just wasn't feeling super stellar.
- 2:33Speaker 1: I didn't want to push too hard. But what happened?
- 2:38Speaker 1: I say that to her? She says, Okay, whatever feels
- 2:41Speaker 1: right for you. And I see in the distance that
- 2:44Speaker 1: my girlfriend that's about to pace me for the second
- 2:48Speaker 1: part of this, the back half of this, she's already
- 2:51Speaker 1: taken off to set the pace for what would be
- 2:56Speaker 1: the goal for the back half. And I just look
- 3:00Speaker 1: up and I say to myself, well, I guess we're
- 3:04Speaker 1: doing this now. Sometimes we need that, right, we need
- 3:08Speaker 1: someone else to remind us who we are. We need
- 3:11Speaker 1: someone else to put their hand on our shoulder and
- 3:14Speaker 1: say you've got this. And it wasn't so much about
- 3:19Speaker 1: whatever the outcome ultimately was on Wednesday. It was more
- 3:24Speaker 1: so of that important reminder that sometimes doing heart things
- 3:29Speaker 1: is going to be intimidating, and it is also possible
- 3:33Speaker 1: to do them anyway. Again, doing heart things will be intimidating, yes,
- 3:38Speaker 1: and it is also possible to execute. There is room
- 3:43Speaker 1: for both there. And so while I may not have
- 3:47Speaker 1: run my actual fastest mile on Wednesday, I was really
- 3:52Speaker 1: proud of myself for sticking with it. I was really
- 3:54Speaker 1: proud of myself for keeping on keeping on, and grateful
- 3:58Speaker 1: to my team for believing in me when sometimes I
- 4:02Speaker 1: just think to myself that maybe today is not my day.
- 4:07Speaker 1: So my question for you this week is what's the
- 4:10Speaker 1: mile you're in? What are you wavering on right now?
- 4:15Speaker 1: And where could you benefit from a little extra love?
- 4:21Speaker 1: Where are you wavering right now? Where is your self
- 4:23Speaker 1: belief staggering? And how can you show up for you
- 4:28Speaker 1: to surprise yourself in the near future. And now a
- 4:34Speaker 1: listener question. Hey, I am a longtime listener of the show.
- 4:38Speaker 1: Here I want to know what is one thing you
- 4:40Speaker 1: know now at thirty seven that you wish you knew
- 4:44Speaker 1: at twenty seven? Thanks so much for everything you do. Ooh,
- 4:48Speaker 1: this is a good one. Something I know at thirty
- 4:52Speaker 1: seven that I wish I knew at twenty seven. I
- 4:54Speaker 1: don't know if I would necessarily go back and tell
- 4:57Speaker 1: myself anything. I feel like it all happened the way
- 5:00Speaker 1: that it's supposed to happen. But what I will say
- 5:03Speaker 1: is that it's not always that serious, and we owe
- 5:08Speaker 1: it to ourselves to find the joy, to find the
- 5:11Speaker 1: good in every day. There are going to be days
- 5:14Speaker 1: where doing that feels more difficult than others. With that said,
- 5:19Speaker 1: it's not that serious. Take a deep breath, relax your shoulders,
- 5:26Speaker 1: Know that you don't need to respond to every email
- 5:30Speaker 1: within minutes, that it's okay to evaluate, to respond instead
- 5:35Speaker 1: of react, and trust that your gut is leading you
- 5:40Speaker 1: in the right direction. I hope that helps. I'm over
- 5:43Speaker 1: at Emily Abody and at Hurdle Podcast, and as always,
- 5:46Speaker 1: if you have a listener question, submit it over email.
- 5:50Speaker 1: It's over at Hello at Hurdle dot us. Another Hurdle conquered.
- 5:57Speaker 1: Catch you guys next time. Ye
