Transcript
- 0:04[SPEAKER_01]: Hi, welcome to the show.
- 0:06[SPEAKER_01]: Others are receiving votes on Pap 40, joined as always by Gene Wojahowski.
- 0:11[SPEAKER_01]: You can catch us on YouTube, s-i-s-i.com, Apple Spotify, wherever you want to find this podcast.
- 0:19[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you for watching and listening.
- 0:21[SPEAKER_01]: Geno, dodge football is a custom to tumult but having both the hurricane and the president potentially visiting Georgia, Alabama.
- 0:31[SPEAKER_01]: Plus me, Saturday is a bit much.
- 0:34[SPEAKER_01]: We'll see how it works out right now.
- 0:36[SPEAKER_01]: It looks like the game is going to go on as scheduled.
- 0:41[SPEAKER_01]: It's hurricane.
- 0:43[SPEAKER_01]: EZS, I'm probably mispronouncing that, sorry, but apologies to the hurricane if I'm mispronounced his name.
- 0:51[SPEAKER_01]: But on paper, a second biggest game of the season to date after Ohio State Texas could be played in some interesting circumstances.
- 1:02[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you know, I'm gonna make, you're gonna roll your eyes when I say this, Pat.
- 1:08[SPEAKER_00]: I could make the argument that this is actually the number one game of the season so far and I say that not not because I think the Texas Ohio State game wasn't a huge game, but I think this game we know more about the teams now, you know,
- 1:34[SPEAKER_00]: I think these teams are beginning or if they haven't already developed an identity, personalities.
- 1:40[SPEAKER_00]: So I think we know more about Georgia and Bama, and I think that makes it a more interesting game in many ways to make.
- 1:48[SPEAKER_01]: That's fair.
- 1:49[SPEAKER_01]: I'll buy that.
- 1:50[SPEAKER_01]: I will buy that.
- 1:51[SPEAKER_01]: And Georgia Alabama is never fails to be interesting, frankly.
- 1:54[SPEAKER_01]: It's got quite a history since Georgia got up off the map with Kirby Smart a decade ago.
- 2:01[SPEAKER_01]: But anyway, we can't control the weather, stuff happens.
- 2:05[SPEAKER_01]: We'll see how things shit out Saturday night there.
- 2:09[SPEAKER_01]: But among the things that have just kind of happened and tend to happen in the modern era, you can spend a lot of money and not win.
- 2:19[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to talk more about Georgia Alabama and other games later.
- 2:23[SPEAKER_01]: But right now, I want to talk about the,
- 2:27[SPEAKER_01]: The lack of return for your investment in a couple of places that is hitting hard like Ann Arbor and College Station specifically, where the home teams already have two losses before midseason and they've got top 15 in an aisle, but it's according to the athletic.
- 2:45[SPEAKER_01]: which put basically five million dollar ranges on all the power conference teams.
- 2:51[SPEAKER_01]: And according to them, Michigan was in from 36 to 40 million, which was between 10 and 15, A&M higher, probably top five, six, 45 to 50 million.
- 3:04[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, with the roster,
- 3:14[SPEAKER_01]: have taken them down.
- 3:16[SPEAKER_01]: Five games in this 10 year car, winning hammer's staff are already being buried in the court of public opinion.
- 3:21[SPEAKER_01]: Everyone hates the offensive coordinator, et cetera, so on, including a tight end on the team who had some critical comments about Jason Beck in a group chat, and then got finked on by somebody else in the group chat.
- 3:34[SPEAKER_01]: Min apologized.
- 3:36[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, he apologized, he did, he did.
- 3:39[SPEAKER_00]: You got to know and trust everybody in the group chat, man.
- 3:42[SPEAKER_00]: That's for sure.
- 3:43[SPEAKER_01]: Kentucky, also about $20 million less than A&M, won a Kyle Field at Louisville, here where I live, where they publicly acknowledged in the spring in a story, I did, they're spending like $30 million a year more than they have.
- 4:00[SPEAKER_01]: There are problems two and three.
- 4:01[SPEAKER_01]: I think it could be a little hard to sustain.
- 4:03[SPEAKER_00]: OK.
- 4:04[SPEAKER_01]: But that's the strategy at the strategy also involves winning and they're not doing that two and three start has everybody on the hot scene not Jeff Brom per say but his entire staff.
- 4:15[SPEAKER_01]: Which includes a lot of family members and the AD met with Jeff from Sunday to discuss staff performance, including her own just just heard.
- 4:26[SPEAKER_01]: through himself on the fire too and said, you know what I'm part of the problem, because I guess I don't own.
- 4:31[SPEAKER_01]: They're not, you know, handing out tickets fast enough, whatever.
- 4:35[SPEAKER_01]: Anyway, Gina, my question, my long-winded question to you has the arms race turned every loss into a fire that coach cataclysm.
- 4:45[SPEAKER_01]: It's just still a zero-sum game.
- 4:46[SPEAKER_01]: Half the teams win, half the teams lose.
- 4:48[SPEAKER_01]: How we processing this.
- 4:51[SPEAKER_00]: there is no doubt that the NIL money and you just, you listed, you know, the millions, the tens of millions of some of these programs are spending.
- 5:03[SPEAKER_00]: The ROI is a big deal now.
- 5:07[SPEAKER_00]: but there is an eternal truth in sports and it's not just how much money you spend, but it's how you spend it.
- 5:15[SPEAKER_00]: And then once you get the talent, how you coach it.
- 5:18[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, look, the New York Mets had the highest payroll in M.O.B.
- 5:24[SPEAKER_00]: they didn't make the play off.
- 5:25[SPEAKER_00]: So Cleveland Guardians had the lowest and they did.
- 5:29[SPEAKER_00]: The Cowboys of the 6th highest payroll in 2025 miss the playoffs, the Seahawks were 29th out of 32 in payroll in 1 the Super Bowl.
- 5:39[SPEAKER_00]: So what does that tell you?
- 5:41[SPEAKER_00]: It tells you, if you get somebody like Kirk's signal in there, you know, who knows what he's doing.
- 5:48[SPEAKER_00]: And has his way of evaluating players and then spending that money appropriately and then has a staff that can develop those players, that's what matters.
- 5:57[SPEAKER_00]: What did we hear from from that Michigan tie it in.
- 6:03[SPEAKER_00]: that, you know, they're in disarray, they don't trust the coaches, there's this idea that there's no identity on the team, you know, so it goes far beyond just the checks that you write, it's what happens inside the building and so, you know, Michigan is a textbook example of what happens when.
- 6:25[SPEAKER_00]: The money isn't spent correctly and I know a lot of criticism has been aimed toward the quarterback underwood and maybe it is an issue.
- 6:33[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe it's, you know, maybe he's the problem, but I think it goes deeper than that, it's same with ANM and then you look at a school like Oklahoma State and what were the
- 6:56[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and I, without question, the, the, just throwing money at something does not make you a winner.
- 7:03[SPEAKER_01]: You have to know what to do with the money and, and how to coach the players as, as you alluded to, how to identify them and how to develop them.
- 7:11[SPEAKER_01]: And you're the bottom end of this scale, which you have for the public, Duke 12 to 15 million.
- 7:17[SPEAKER_01]: They're undefeated right now.
- 7:20[SPEAKER_01]: Wake Forest in there at 16 to 20 million.
- 7:24[SPEAKER_01]: They have one loss and it's to Miami and some great wins.
- 7:27[SPEAKER_01]: They look fantastic.
- 7:28[SPEAKER_01]: So that's the nature of this is you cannot everybody, you know, I think the rush has been we've just got to spend more.
- 7:39[SPEAKER_01]: And some places I get it's like we're just not keeping up with we are behind.
- 7:44[SPEAKER_01]: But everybody can go ahead and spend more.
- 7:47[SPEAKER_01]: Not everybody can win.
- 7:49[SPEAKER_01]: That's the bottom line.
- 7:51[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, well, if we look at the top five, I mean, they're all spending a lot of money.
- 7:58[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, Ohio State, Texas, I mean, Notre Dame, those programs are spending a lot of money and they are seen a return.
- 8:07[SPEAKER_00]: But it's not, as you say, it's not a guarantee.
- 8:11[SPEAKER_01]: That's not, but that, and this also, this is part of the reason why they want to hand out participation trophies and go to the playoffs.
- 8:20[SPEAKER_01]: It's like we've got to justify the fact that we are squeezing our boosters for every penny so that we can have a 30 to 40 million dollar payroll and some cases, 50 million.
- 8:31[SPEAKER_01]: And it's like,
- 8:35[SPEAKER_01]: We just need to make things easier so that we can tell people to give us more money.
- 8:40[SPEAKER_01]: It's this flawed concept that we are on the verge of, as we wait and see if we do end up with a 2014 playoff.
- 8:47[SPEAKER_01]: But that's where we stand right now, is this mentality of like,
- 8:53[SPEAKER_01]: You know, everybody just needs to spend more, but again, there's going to be the same number of wins and the same number of losses.
- 9:00[SPEAKER_01]: And then it's going to see how people deal with it.
- 9:03[SPEAKER_01]: And one of the ways I think they have dealt with it is hammering more on players who are now paid paraprofessionals is if fair game gene out to to rip the quarterback and the receivers and the defensive backs.
- 9:20[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think it's ever been more lucrative.
- 9:23[SPEAKER_00]: to be a head coach and college football and the same goes for the players.
- 9:30[SPEAKER_00]: But the price that you pay for that is this scrutiny.
- 9:36[SPEAKER_00]: that goes far beyond anything we've ever seen before.
- 9:40[SPEAKER_00]: It's never been harder for a head coach in this business, and it's definitely never been harder for a player in this business.
- 9:49[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, some of these players sort of bring it on themselves when they post a TikTok video of them standing and driving in front of their, you know, Maserati, you're gonna catch grief if you don't perform.
- 10:02[SPEAKER_00]: But there's still 18 to 22-year-olds for the most part.
- 10:07[SPEAKER_00]: And I do think their play is open for reasonable, constructive criticism, responsible criticism.
- 10:19[SPEAKER_00]: But there's a difference between responsible criticism and abuse, and I think we've seen more abuse these days via social media, especially, and it's crossed the line 10,000 times.
- 10:34[SPEAKER_00]: So that's where we are, doesn't make it right.
- 10:39[SPEAKER_00]: So there's a part of me that that feels bad for these players in a way they're getting paid they're they're simply taking part in the financial ecosystem That has been given to them, but in a way it's also held against them.
- 10:55[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, because there's a lot of people who don't like the NIL landscape.
- 11:00[SPEAKER_01]: And so now it's like this is my way to to lash out at that and the players by Gally, they're getting more money when I was in college.
- 11:08[SPEAKER_01]: Everybody plays for the love of the game, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah,
- 11:22[SPEAKER_01]: I'm with you that look yes you're going to you're just going to get more criticism you're now you're now a young millionaire to whom much has given much is expected and there's much that you I guess have to take but I do think it's excessive and I and with the age of of who we're talking about and talking to I think it it's concerning you know because you know,
- 11:46[SPEAKER_01]: most of these people are still working out there working their way to a perspective on life and their brains aren't fully formed and all that and to hold them to the same standard that you're holding the New England Patriot starting quarterback who's in his mid-late 20s then it's a little bit out of whack there.
- 12:05[SPEAKER_00]: A bitch of rose Kennedy never thought her quote would be used for N. I. L. purpose.
- 12:11[SPEAKER_01]: That the truth.
- 12:13[SPEAKER_01]: Here we are.
- 12:14[SPEAKER_00]: Well done by you.
- 12:15[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you.
- 12:16[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you.
- 12:18[SPEAKER_01]: You know what much has been given to USC and much is expected there.
- 12:23[SPEAKER_01]: This is my other money related topic.
- 12:28[SPEAKER_01]: I think USC fans should be questioning the path their school has taken.
- 12:33[SPEAKER_01]: They're five and one, great.
- 12:35[SPEAKER_01]: Yay, but they've beaten basically nobody.
- 12:39[SPEAKER_01]: They lost handedly to their only ranked opponent.
- 12:41[SPEAKER_01]: One team they've beaten of any note is Washington, who's also in the disappointment ranks.
- 12:47[SPEAKER_01]: And that game they were trailing by devil digits and then rally to win that.
- 12:52[SPEAKER_01]: They've won road game they've played as at Rutgers.
- 12:55[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not sure that counts.
- 12:56[SPEAKER_01]: The schedule is backloaded.
- 12:59[SPEAKER_01]: They could be underdogs in five of their last six games, four of which are on the road.
- 13:03[SPEAKER_01]: And if you're a USC fan, here's what your school has given up for you.
- 13:07[SPEAKER_01]: They gave up the Notre Dame series, which USC fans love.
- 13:10[SPEAKER_01]: So, Notre Dame fans, they gave up a lot of regional rivalries to play in places like East Rutherford, New Jersey, or Piscataway.
- 13:18[SPEAKER_01]: Sorry.
- 13:19[SPEAKER_01]: But you're not playing the Bay Area Schools.
- 13:21[SPEAKER_01]: You're not playing the Arizona Schools games that if you were a USC fan, you could get to easily or maybe you'd have lived in those areas.
- 13:28[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think there's nearly as many of them living in College Park, Maryland, or West Lafayette, Indiana.
- 13:36[SPEAKER_01]: You're playing unfamiliar opponents.
- 13:39[SPEAKER_01]: You're playing in a harder conference where you lose a couple of games and guess what?
- 13:44[SPEAKER_01]: You're well down the very long pecking order.
- 13:48[SPEAKER_01]: And this is what you've signed up for so you could make more money so that the school could have more big tenant media revenue that it was getting from the packed 12 you also played the biggest hand in destroying the packed 12 congratulations on that.
- 14:02[SPEAKER_01]: Is this the life you wanted that's my question for USC fans if you were one of them Gino what would you think.
- 14:11[SPEAKER_00]: It's done.
- 14:13[SPEAKER_00]: It is nothing I can do about it now.
- 14:14[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, you're going to get back to Notre Dame rivalry in 2030.
- 14:18[SPEAKER_00]: You're going to get it for four years.
- 14:20[SPEAKER_00]: And you know what things happen.
- 14:23[SPEAKER_00]: There's a chance a big 10 could expand again, even though Ted Cruz says he's been assured that's not going to happen.
- 14:30[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, things can happen things can change.
- 14:33[SPEAKER_00]: So I don't know how how much more the big 10 could evolve.
- 14:38[SPEAKER_00]: But it is, this is the situation that USC is in.
- 14:43[SPEAKER_00]: If you're a fan, when you saw it happen, none of this should come as a surprise, you're gonna have to travel two or three time zones.
- 14:53[SPEAKER_00]: It stinks, you're right.
- 14:55[SPEAKER_00]: They gave up regional rivalries.
- 14:58[SPEAKER_00]: They did it for the paycheck.
- 15:00[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it's really that simple.
- 15:02[SPEAKER_00]: You always follow the money, right?
- 15:05[SPEAKER_00]: So that's what happened here.
- 15:07[SPEAKER_00]: They aren't the only program that did this.
- 15:11[SPEAKER_00]: So I don't know what the worth is of litigating this anymore.
- 15:20[SPEAKER_00]: They are where they are.
- 15:21[SPEAKER_00]: So now figure it out.
- 15:23[SPEAKER_00]: You know, so they've had troubles traveling east.
- 15:26[SPEAKER_00]: All right, figure it out.
- 15:27[SPEAKER_00]: You're traveling east this week against Penn State, win a game, okay, win a game, change the narrative.
- 15:35[SPEAKER_00]: change how we feel about things.
- 15:38[SPEAKER_00]: They have four games where they're traveling.
- 15:41[SPEAKER_00]: Let's hear at Rutgers at Penn State to get two weeks before the next game where they travel east again at Wisconsin.
- 15:49[SPEAKER_00]: Home against Ohio State been two weeks before they head back.
- 15:54[SPEAKER_00]: east again to Indiana.
- 15:56[SPEAKER_00]: So I don't really have a solution other than change narrative.
- 16:01[SPEAKER_00]: It's a good enough program with enough tradition and enough talent to change it.
- 16:06[SPEAKER_00]: Start winning the games and then this becomes less of a concern, I think.
- 16:11[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, no, that's it.
- 16:12[SPEAKER_01]: If they had come into the big ten and thrived,
- 16:16[SPEAKER_01]: And we're not, you know, if we're talking about what a great move it was still done.
- 16:20[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know whether it's as enjoyable for the fans, but but it would work out where you can say, we're not only making more money, but we're winning games.
- 16:28[SPEAKER_01]: And we'll see maybe they'll do that in the back half of this season.
- 16:31[SPEAKER_01]: But
- 16:32[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, yeah, you, I, I, I hate you saying that basically this is, uh, fade a completely that, you know, there's no use talking about, you're taking the force smallest words in the English language out of my, my repertoire, I'm, I let, I told you so.
- 16:45[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 16:46[SPEAKER_01]: My words for USC.
- 16:48[SPEAKER_01]: Why did you do this?
- 16:49[SPEAKER_01]: Why did you ruin the pack 12?
- 16:52[SPEAKER_00]: All right, I'm done.
- 16:53[SPEAKER_00]: Act 12 was a bit of a mess, though, Pat.
- 16:55[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, you can acknowledge that, right?
- 16:58[SPEAKER_00]: It was a mess, yes.
- 16:59[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, a mess very much of its own making.
- 17:03[SPEAKER_01]: I still think some effort to save it would have been and better leadership certainly would have done everybody a lot better than the situation college sports is in now.
- 17:15[SPEAKER_01]: But I will, I will, I'll holster my told you so gone for now on that one.
- 17:21[SPEAKER_00]: No, you know what, you're right.
- 17:24[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, all the points you make are right.
- 17:27[SPEAKER_00]: If I'm a USC fan, I'm looking very fondly
- 17:33[SPEAKER_00]: but they're gone.
- 17:34[SPEAKER_00]: So now do something about the present tense.
- 17:37[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's their task.
- 17:39[SPEAKER_01]: And yes, a big game could have been bigger.
- 17:43[SPEAKER_01]: If the state of Penn State were better, but still wide out conditions in happy valley for that one.
- 17:56[SPEAKER_01]: All right, Geno, the AP tap 25 continues through some interesting results, one voter in particular appears to have caught your eye can you can you enlighten the listeners and watch viewers.
- 18:10[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I'll preface this.
- 18:12[SPEAKER_00]: Did you use to vote in the end?
- 18:13[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 18:14[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 18:14[SPEAKER_00]: Did you still vote in the AP?
- 18:16[SPEAKER_00]: No, I haven't voted in years and it's yeah, I'm thankful.
- 18:19[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, so yeah, and I voted to for a time and I hated every second of it.
- 18:26[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
- 18:26[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 18:26[SPEAKER_00]: So you're covered in a game, you're on deadline.
- 18:29[SPEAKER_00]: And now you've got to, you know, turn your attention to the poll.
- 18:33[SPEAKER_00]: And somebody back in New York's, Kanya, and saying, hey, we need your top 25.
- 18:39[SPEAKER_00]: So it's just not optimal conditions to make a really reasoned and logical top 25 at times.
- 18:49[SPEAKER_00]: So it has its flaws.
- 18:52[SPEAKER_00]: But what happened this past week?
- 18:54[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm not going to name the voter.
- 18:56[SPEAKER_00]: You can find the name the voter online.
- 18:59[SPEAKER_00]: It really doesn't matter.
- 19:01[SPEAKER_00]: The point is there was a voter out there who decided
- 19:06[SPEAKER_00]: that he would move Mississippi state up.
- 19:10[SPEAKER_00]: from number 18 in his previous poll.
- 19:14[SPEAKER_00]: To number 10, this week after the Bulldogs beat Bama by 33 points.
- 19:19[SPEAKER_00]: Oh wait, they did not beat Bama by 33 points.
- 19:23[SPEAKER_00]: They lost to Bama by 33 points.
- 19:28[SPEAKER_00]: And this voter moved them up eight spots.
- 19:31[SPEAKER_00]: That's not good.
- 19:33[SPEAKER_00]: My neurons were like misfiring.
- 19:40[SPEAKER_00]: After Pitt beat unbeaten Virginia Tech in Blacksburg with a backup quarterback after starting quarterback got hurt during the game, he dropped them out of the top 25.
- 19:56[SPEAKER_00]: Yikes, okay.
- 19:57[SPEAKER_00]: And then we saw the AP poll this week.
- 20:01[SPEAKER_00]: Kentucky wins Beach South Carolina.
- 20:06[SPEAKER_00]: and drops goes into our territory, others receiving votes.
- 20:12[SPEAKER_00]: And so my guess is if Kentucky beats Ellis you this week, they might get dropped to what?
- 20:19[SPEAKER_01]: That's no level.
- 20:20[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 20:21[SPEAKER_00]: You know, so it's mind boggling.
- 20:25[SPEAKER_00]: So make it make sense for me.
- 20:28[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, first of all, I can't make it make sense because yeah, we have,
- 20:35[SPEAKER_01]: People doing the polls, who that there is, you, you described it somewhat, the difficulty of trying to do what your regular job is to do this unpaid extra thing on pretty tight timeline.
- 20:51[SPEAKER_01]: And you haven't watched everything.
- 20:54[SPEAKER_01]: And maybe you didn't catch up to this score or that score, or maybe you thought, well, I had Mississippi State too low last week, so I'm going to market correct and move them up this week.
- 21:04[SPEAKER_01]: Whatever the case may be, you get some very flawed reasoning.
- 21:08[SPEAKER_01]: No doubt about it.
- 21:09[SPEAKER_01]: My, my problem, and I look, I think we should have the the pulse.
- 21:13[SPEAKER_01]: I think we should have an AP top 25, thank you, step coaches top 25.
- 21:17[SPEAKER_01]: I don't
- 21:20[SPEAKER_01]: mind the votes being public in the report in the media poll, which they are.
- 21:25[SPEAKER_01]: What I don't like is kind of the the mob mentality of we got to get the entire fan base to come after this person who ranked our team to low.
- 21:37[SPEAKER_01]: Here's the email address, go get them.
- 21:39[SPEAKER_01]: Here's the Twitter handle, go get them.
- 21:42[SPEAKER_01]: This is, first of all, it's everybody has their own opinion.
- 21:46[SPEAKER_01]: Some people are gonna look at this really differently.
- 21:48[SPEAKER_01]: And they're gonna say, I just think this team should be 16 instead of 25 or this team.
- 21:53[SPEAKER_01]: And it's okay, you don't have to all think the same.
- 21:57[SPEAKER_01]: That's my problem is publishing the ballots.
- 22:03[SPEAKER_01]: And then showing there's actually even a little like grade of how far off of the mean you are.
- 22:11[SPEAKER_01]: you're encouraging everybody to think the same way, vote the same way at the same way, which I don't think serves a good purpose, because I want to diverse pool.
- 22:21[SPEAKER_01]: Now some of it, you're gonna get some nonsense with it like you said.
- 22:24[SPEAKER_01]: But I don't want everybody to say, well, gosh, all these other voters have Iowa number 14, I gotta have them 14.
- 22:32[SPEAKER_01]: If you say, I don't wanna say, I don't think I was that good.
- 22:34[SPEAKER_01]: I wanna think I was should be 23rd.
- 22:37[SPEAKER_01]: So that's my thought there.
- 22:38[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, group think is a problem.
- 22:41[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and it's a danger in the polls.
- 22:44[SPEAKER_00]: And this particular AP voter did write a column, explaining his reasoning behind his vote.
- 22:51[SPEAKER_00]: Hey, it's your vote.
- 22:54[SPEAKER_00]: But if you do something that literally makes no sense, then yes, you are going to catch some heat for it.
- 23:04[SPEAKER_00]: I'm fine with the polls, all right.
- 23:07[SPEAKER_00]: But they're like NFL exhibition games.
- 23:09[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, they don't really have any, they don't count.
- 23:13[SPEAKER_00]: And I hope finally this puts to rest.
- 23:17[SPEAKER_00]: I still see this stuff from coaches
- 23:23[SPEAKER_00]: The AP vote influences the CFP committee.
- 23:26[SPEAKER_00]: Are you kidding me?
- 23:28[SPEAKER_00]: Do you think the CFP committee is looking at this latest poll going, you know what?
- 23:33[SPEAKER_00]: We really ought to move Mississippi state up in our thinking.
- 23:37[SPEAKER_00]: No, nobody's doing that.
- 23:39[SPEAKER_00]: It's just, it's cotton candy, looks nice, a lot of hot air.
- 23:45[SPEAKER_00]: Really doesn't mean anything, but I don't have a problem with it.
- 23:48[SPEAKER_00]: I guess the only thing I'd say Pat is it, I would, I would be fine if like the AP said, you know what, we're not going to have the however many voters it is.
- 23:59[SPEAKER_00]: We're going to have kind of a quasi committee also and we're going to pick 20, 25.
- 24:05[SPEAKER_00]: writers and media people that we know who are really devoted to this.
- 24:10[SPEAKER_00]: And maybe you get more of a, I don't know, a logical poll each week.
- 24:19[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 24:19[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know what the answer is.
- 24:22[SPEAKER_00]: If you keep it, I'm fine.
- 24:23[SPEAKER_00]: If you got rid of it, I would be fine with that, too.
- 24:26[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, well, the football riders association has a smaller group that votes.
- 24:31[SPEAKER_01]: They do a super, super, six gain or whatever it's called.
- 24:34[SPEAKER_01]: There you go.
- 24:35[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's fine.
- 24:38[SPEAKER_01]: They come up with things I disagree with too.
- 24:40[SPEAKER_01]: But the, yeah, the best news is the polls don't matter.
- 24:48[SPEAKER_01]: And there's no way the committee is influenced by the polls.
- 24:52[SPEAKER_01]: There's just no way.
- 24:55[SPEAKER_01]: I would bet they don't even know what the AP top 25 is.
- 24:58[SPEAKER_01]: I wouldn't.
- 24:59[SPEAKER_01]: I don't look at it.
- 25:00[SPEAKER_01]: Frankly, the only, like if I'm looking for a list of games that I need to talk about in the 40-hour dash, and I'm like, all right, who's ranked on ranked?
- 25:09[SPEAKER_01]: I think Texas is number one right now, but I can't say for sure, I believe they are.
- 25:16[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, what, once the CFP rankings come out, the other polls become irrelevant, nobody cares.
- 25:24[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so I don't know why everybody gets their shorts in a bunch about it, but this one in particular, just is like,
- 25:32[SPEAKER_01]: What was, so he said he wrote this column explaining, what was the explanation?
- 25:36[SPEAKER_00]: I think the explanation was, he takes a week by week and in the case of Mississippi State, he was looking at the one loss SEC teams in the kind of starting his baseline there.
- 25:51[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know what, reasonable enough.
- 25:54[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 25:55[SPEAKER_00]: the math didn't math to me.
- 25:57[SPEAKER_01]: Well, that, you know what, so I wrote Saturday from Columbia, when Missouri beat the hell out of Florida, how do you rank these one loss SEC teams?
- 26:07[SPEAKER_01]: And I think I put Mississippi State the highest.
- 26:09[SPEAKER_01]: Now, I didn't, you know, like move them from way down to way up, but you get into this cycle of trying to figure out when Florida
- 26:21[SPEAKER_01]: has beaten Mississippi, Mississippi's beaten alas, you, uh, Mississippi State has beaten who they beat, Missouri, Missouri has beaten for it, and it's this cycle like I, I don't know how you figure that out.
- 26:33[SPEAKER_01]: So, all good, you know what, you good, good luck to everybody.
- 26:38[SPEAKER_01]: If it fortunately, I would think by November the whatever third when the first poll comes out, uh, first committee ranking comes out.
- 26:46[SPEAKER_01]: they'll have some separation between some of these SSC teams.
- 26:50[SPEAKER_01]: Otherwise, good luck to them too.
- 26:53[SPEAKER_01]: Um, all right, but you know, we, we were, we're blabin' here.
- 26:56[SPEAKER_01]: We got to get to some some some some storylines around some big games here.
- 27:01[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, and the biggest is as we alluded to early George Alabama.
- 27:05[SPEAKER_01]: We talked about why maybe it could be the biggest game of the year so far.
- 27:10[SPEAKER_01]: But how big is this for Katelyn to bore particularly.
- 27:13[SPEAKER_01]: It looks like he has the team Alabama fans have grown accustomed to this year.
- 27:18[SPEAKER_01]: They are a pretty dominant 5 and 0.
- 27:22[SPEAKER_01]: Is he ready to be the next Bama Boss of the SEC?
- 27:25[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's possible.
- 27:28[SPEAKER_01]: I think that they may be able to win the league this year.
- 27:33[SPEAKER_01]: Beating Georgia now doesn't win the league later.
- 27:36[SPEAKER_01]: But it's a heck of a nice step.
- 27:38[SPEAKER_01]: It helped get them in the playoff last year.
- 27:40[SPEAKER_01]: DeBore's beaten Georgia, beaten Kirby Smart, the only two times he's faced him in the regular season.
- 27:46[SPEAKER_01]: Then they got the reality check in the SEC Championship game last year.
- 27:51[SPEAKER_01]: So winning this game is great.
- 27:52[SPEAKER_01]: I think it goes a long way towards getting the winner into the playoff.
- 27:56[SPEAKER_01]: It's not a mortal blow to the loser, whatever it may be.
- 28:00[SPEAKER_01]: But I really like where Kale and DeBore has Alabama right now.
- 28:04[SPEAKER_01]: What have you seen?
- 28:06[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I can't disagree with anything you said, and you made the, you know, the point that really matters is that Bama has beaten George in the last two years in the regular season and guess what Georgia ended up winning the SEC in both of those seasons.
- 28:21[SPEAKER_00]: So,
- 28:24[SPEAKER_00]: You know, if you asked Kevin Borough, what would you rather do, you know, beat them Saturday or when the SEC championship, I think he'd say when the SEC championship, but I think we're seeing this program now here in year three.
- 28:38[SPEAKER_00]: really cake on, sort of his vision.
- 28:42[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
- 28:42[SPEAKER_00]: And things that were a real concern last year don't seem as big of a concern this year.
- 28:49[SPEAKER_00]: Things that we've known about or have identified with Alabama in the past, they seem to be bubbling to the surface again, especially when it comes to the running game.
- 28:59[SPEAKER_00]: And then when you have a quarterback like Keelen Russell, that makes every coach look better.
- 29:05[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm with you on all your points.
- 29:07[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, Russell's looks like something special.
- 29:09[SPEAKER_01]: He's been fantastic, receivers elite.
- 29:12[SPEAKER_01]: Defense is scored four touchdowns.
- 29:13[SPEAKER_01]: They have four pick sixes so far.
- 29:15[SPEAKER_01]: And that used to be a hallmark of the Saben teams.
- 29:18[SPEAKER_01]: Defense would score.
- 29:19[SPEAKER_01]: So I like, and they, yes, they look like an elite Alabama team again, but they look like a de-bore team.
- 29:28[SPEAKER_01]: They don't look necessarily like Saben and speaking of Saben, the Saben documentary launches this week.
- 29:35[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I've been just Thursday night.
- 29:37[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, there's day night.
- 29:38[SPEAKER_01]: Here we go.
- 29:39[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 29:40[SPEAKER_01]: Do you have a save in story?
- 29:42[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I'm looking forward to this documentary.
- 29:45[SPEAKER_00]: And I know there's going to be a lot of, excuse me, a lot of football in it.
- 29:48[SPEAKER_00]: But I'm really more interested in seeing the behind the scenes sort of thing, the relationships.
- 29:56[SPEAKER_00]: who who's saving is and how he became who he is and I'm sure that's going to be explored in the documentary.
- 30:03[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm really looking forward to it.
- 30:06[SPEAKER_00]: You know, when I was working for ESPN and and specifically working for college game day, you know, Tom Ronaldo did
- 30:16[SPEAKER_00]: most of the Alabama pieces and did most of the saving pieces.
- 30:22[SPEAKER_00]: He had built a relationship with Nick and they just had a good rapport.
- 30:29[SPEAKER_00]: But when Tom ended up going to Fox,
- 30:33[SPEAKER_00]: I got a few more of those reps because of the opening.
- 30:37[SPEAKER_00]: And so I don't know if I have a specific story but I used to love trying to figure out his body language when you're doing an interview with him and I'm sure you've interviewed him, you know, a hundred times too fat.
- 30:48[SPEAKER_00]: Like when he would cross his arms and lean back in the chair when we're doing, you know, the on camera stuff or if his foot started tapping, I knew it's like we got to get him out of here, you know, like I did this is like, you know, this is five alarm he wants to end this thing and I never wanted to go past.
- 31:08[SPEAKER_00]: the number that we had agreed upon, because I knew I'd be back there at another point, but there is one story that we did.
- 31:16[SPEAKER_00]: Him and Miss Terry were very involved in habitat for humanity, and the genesis of it was when the tornadoes came through that part of Alabama, a number of years
- 31:36[SPEAKER_00]: They say they're underwrote the building of homes, the championship homes they called them.
- 31:41[SPEAKER_00]: Every time a government would win a national championship, the savings would write a check.
- 31:48[SPEAKER_00]: And so I went down there and sort of chronicle that.
- 31:52[SPEAKER_00]: And the savings didn't really want to do the story because they didn't want it to be about them, but they also understood if we do the story, then more publicity will be paid to the cause.
- 32:03[SPEAKER_00]: And so what I saw were two people from humble beginnings in West Virginia who are trying to help people who were at their lowest point financially, spiritually, emotionally.
- 32:15[SPEAKER_00]: And that's the part of the savings that I got a glimpse of.
- 32:21[SPEAKER_00]: And that's the part that I'm really looking forward to in this documentary.
- 32:25[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's great stuff.
- 32:26[SPEAKER_01]: And I remember one of my first stories, maybe my first one at Yahoo, after I'd come over from ESPN was kind of saving the human being, and they were getting ready to play LSU big game.
- 32:41[SPEAKER_01]: And I talked to Tom Isoh, who would work with him and Michigan State when, right?
- 32:47[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 32:47[SPEAKER_01]: And he said, yeah, I went over to his house
- 32:52[SPEAKER_01]: Nixon, the backyard shopping wood with an axe, he's like, that's a real man.
- 32:56[SPEAKER_00]: So that's, you know, he's all loved that.
- 32:59[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 33:00[SPEAKER_01]: That was, yeah, but they bonded in a different way over adopting kids.
- 33:07[SPEAKER_01]: And Nick was adopted and ended up becoming an adopter and so did,
- 33:14[SPEAKER_01]: Tom Iso.
- 33:15[SPEAKER_01]: And that side of him, you know, I think had been put so far into the background of the aura of
- 33:24[SPEAKER_01]: tough, serious, relentless Nick Sabin.
- 33:28[SPEAKER_01]: And there's a definitely a different side to him that I think has come out more.
- 33:32[SPEAKER_01]: And I hope continues to come out more.
- 33:34[SPEAKER_01]: And you see him more as a human being and part of that is like, hey, I was an orphan and I wanna help kids who would been in that same situation.
- 33:45[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's pretty cool.
- 33:47[SPEAKER_01]: So looking forward to seeing this documentary as well.
- 33:50[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and Tom, by the way, is an integral part of that documentary.
- 33:54[SPEAKER_00]: He did, I think he did the majority, if not all the, all the save and interviews or maybe the mystery interviews also.
- 34:03[SPEAKER_01]: Then you know it's great going to be great interviewing.
- 34:06[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, absolutely phenomenal at that.
- 34:09[SPEAKER_01]: So looking forward to it.
- 34:10[SPEAKER_01]: All right, not the BAMA, George,
- 34:15[SPEAKER_01]: Indiana Nebraska and, you know, there were many decades on in the history of Coach football where you wouldn't even want to talk about this game because it would be such a mismatch.
- 34:27[SPEAKER_01]: But instead, it's approving ground potentially for Nebraska, Indiana has proved itself Indiana's 21st straight games.
- 34:36[SPEAKER_01]: How big is it for Matt rule?
- 34:37[SPEAKER_01]: It's year four.
- 34:39[SPEAKER_01]: hadn't done much in terms of beating ranked teams or factoring in the big ten race.
- 34:43[SPEAKER_01]: This could change it.
- 34:46[SPEAKER_01]: I think this is huge for rule and for for IU.
- 34:50[SPEAKER_01]: I Indiana has not played a great schedule so far, but digging into the stats.
- 34:57[SPEAKER_01]: I'm starting to believe that you know that I've been a believer, but I'm coming more of a believer, frankly.
- 35:05[SPEAKER_01]: I'm a true believer.
- 35:07[SPEAKER_01]: I think these losers are good.
- 35:09[SPEAKER_01]: Nebraska ain't played nobody yet.
- 35:12[SPEAKER_01]: This is going to be big.
- 35:13[SPEAKER_01]: I think rule needs.
- 35:15[SPEAKER_01]: If you don't win, fine, but you need to step up and make this a heck of a game.
- 35:19[SPEAKER_01]: I think in my opinion, what do you think?
- 35:21[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I'm more of a Nebraska believer than you.
- 35:25[SPEAKER_00]: You mock me in an earlier podcast when I stood up for the.
- 35:30[SPEAKER_00]: Huskers.
- 35:30[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not saying they're Indiana.
- 35:32[SPEAKER_00]: They aren't.
- 35:34[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, you were very kind to rule when you said he's had some struggles against writing teams.
- 35:40[SPEAKER_00]: He's oh and nine versus ranked teams since coming into Nebraska, who.
- 35:46[SPEAKER_00]: Two and 25 versus ranked opponents in Nebraska hasn't been a ranked team since September of 2016.
- 35:52[SPEAKER_00]: So yes, there's a lot writing on this.
- 35:58[SPEAKER_00]: I'm with you that are they going to be Indiana.
- 36:03[SPEAKER_00]: Well, it's at Nebraska and certainly that crowds can be there and Nebraska has shown progress and rule is said this is his best team he's had at Nebraska.
- 36:13[SPEAKER_00]: It's still going to be tough, but if they can at least.
- 36:18[SPEAKER_00]: play near the level of an IU and show that they're capable of winning these kind of games or have the potential, that's going to be a big deal.
- 36:28[SPEAKER_00]: So they're home against Indiana this week, at Oregon the Falling Week, win one of those somehow win both.
- 36:37[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, now you've really got our attention.
- 36:39[SPEAKER_00]: So going to be tough.
- 36:42[SPEAKER_00]: win both us.
- 36:43[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, we're then we're really talking, but we'll see.
- 36:46[SPEAKER_01]: Anyway, we'll pick that game.
- 36:48[SPEAKER_01]: We'll pick Bama George in a couple of minutes.
- 36:50[SPEAKER_01]: We will pick this game as well, Oregon UCLA.
- 36:53[SPEAKER_01]: How big is this for UCLA?
- 36:56[SPEAKER_01]: Been a punching bag for the ducks.
- 36:58[SPEAKER_01]: They've lost 11 to the last 12, but they're undefeated going in and it's been pretty strong undefeated.
- 37:05[SPEAKER_01]: I think is Bob Chesney the King of LA with the win if they get this.
- 37:11[SPEAKER_00]: No.
- 37:12[SPEAKER_01]: No.
- 37:13[SPEAKER_00]: No.
- 37:14[SPEAKER_00]: King of LA.
- 37:16[SPEAKER_00]: It's the Dodgers.
- 37:18[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 37:18[SPEAKER_00]: It's the Lakers.
- 37:21[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, God.
- 37:23[SPEAKER_00]: It's the Rams.
- 37:24[SPEAKER_00]: It's still USC football.
- 37:27[SPEAKER_00]: And then it's UCLA football.
- 37:29[SPEAKER_01]: But what if wait a minute?
- 37:30[SPEAKER_01]: If they're six and no one they'd be to Oregon, which BUSC doesn't mean half that least be a head of Lincoln Riley?
- 37:37[SPEAKER_00]: Pat, they haven't drawn over 32,000 at the Rose Bowl.
- 37:41[SPEAKER_00]: It is sad.
- 37:42[SPEAKER_01]: It is sad.
- 37:44[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, talk to, to say he's a king when they still got the tarps up at the Rose Bowl.
- 37:50[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 37:51[SPEAKER_00]: So, I mean, yes, it would help.
- 37:54[SPEAKER_00]: If they lose, I don't think it changes the, you know, the good vibes directed toward Chesney.
- 38:03[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I think any realistic UCLA fan is going, we're playing this at odds and we're 11 and a half point dogs, we're optimistic, we're hopeful, but it's still Oregon.
- 38:17[SPEAKER_00]: So it'd be great if they won.
- 38:21[SPEAKER_00]: And if they win, yes, nationally, it's more chesney love locally, more chesney love, but I'm not sure they're quite
- 38:35[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, we'll find out that like if they win all of a sudden, I think we really look at you scaling a different light, but I've got to be surprised if they win so.
- 38:51[SPEAKER_01]: All right, rapid fire segments and people of have dug this when we've done this before, we're going to do it.
- 38:57[SPEAKER_01]: We're each going to ask five questions.
- 38:59[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 38:59[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to hit you with five.
- 39:01[SPEAKER_01]: You hit me with five quick answers.
- 39:04[SPEAKER_01]: I didn't need to see them first, but out of large S, I gave Gene the list of people would be prepared and we'd be clever and insightful.
- 39:13[SPEAKER_01]: And we are starting with Red River Oklahoma Texas this weekend.
- 39:19[SPEAKER_01]: And of course, we got to start with Texas state fair food, which would you rather eat candy watermelon, which I'll describe fried broccoli, the candy watermelon, what a concoction this is.
- 39:37[SPEAKER_01]: a giant ice cold watermelon slice, the size of your head is wrapped in six feet of fruit by the foot, drenched in sour chamoy.
- 39:47[SPEAKER_01]: I don't even know what that is.
- 39:49[SPEAKER_01]: And topped with a heavy sprinkle of tahini, which is a spice.
- 39:54[SPEAKER_01]: Are you going with that?
- 39:56[SPEAKER_00]: That's hilarious.
- 39:57[UNKNOWN]: Yeah.
- 39:59[SPEAKER_01]: Are you going with the candy watermelon or the fried broccoli?
- 40:03[SPEAKER_00]: Well, if you're going to go to the Texas State Fair, you got to get something that's fried, right?
- 40:08[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 40:08[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm going with the fried broccoli.
- 40:11[SPEAKER_00]: Also, if I were trying to develop my heart surgeon cardiac practice, I would camp out at the Texas State Fair and just hand out business cards.
- 40:27[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, really the one thing though that that I would like to try and it's got looked it up.
- 40:32[SPEAKER_00]: It's called, uh, Twinkle Twinkle Brisket Star.
- 40:37[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, I meant to mention that.
- 40:38[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
- 40:39[SPEAKER_00]: It's a hollowed out Twinky.
- 40:43[SPEAKER_00]: What, what sort of mind comes up with this?
- 40:46[SPEAKER_00]: A hollowed out Twinky with brisket, bacon, jalapeno, cream cheese, battered of course,
- 40:57[SPEAKER_00]: You, you can already just go ahead and make your angioplasty appointment after eating that.
- 41:03[SPEAKER_00]: So yes, okay.
- 41:04[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm going with the fried.
- 41:06[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, but like how to even haul a lot of twinking.
- 41:08[SPEAKER_01]: Like that's labor intensive, isn't it?
- 41:11[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 41:12[SPEAKER_00]: There are geniuses there.
- 41:13[SPEAKER_01]: There they are, I guess so.
- 41:15[SPEAKER_01]: Look, I'll take the fried broccoli any day because I'm thinking about this watermelon thing.
- 41:20[SPEAKER_01]: First of all, big is your head.
- 41:22[SPEAKER_01]: That's a problem if you're gonna walk around.
- 41:24[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 41:25[SPEAKER_01]: Secondly, you start trying to bite into this thing with this water fruit by the foot around it and then you get down to the watermelon.
- 41:35[SPEAKER_01]: It's just gonna be a massive mess.
- 41:37[SPEAKER_01]: It's gonna be all over the place.
- 41:39[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm putting some logistics behind this gene and I, I just feel like eating the fried broccoli is going to be easier than eating the Twinkie so and and also as someone who made the mistake.
- 41:52[SPEAKER_00]: of a green to go on, I don't know, I think it's called the sling shot or something like that.
- 41:57[SPEAKER_00]: It's one of those, what do they call like a bungee thing like a super bungee thing you did this I did this and there's a point where you're in this metal cage and you are hurtling toward the earth and your face down and like.
- 42:14[SPEAKER_00]: the asphalt is coming at you really fast.
- 42:18[SPEAKER_00]: So I want to eat something that, you know, fried broccoli went when I rout that up.
- 42:23[SPEAKER_00]: It's going to be easy to clean up.
- 42:26[SPEAKER_00]: The watermelon, I think, is going to be more of a problem.
- 42:28[SPEAKER_01]: It'll look bad, too.
- 42:29[SPEAKER_01]: You've got red stuff all over the place.
- 42:33[SPEAKER_01]: That's a way to think of that.
- 42:34[SPEAKER_01]: You're thinking of all angles.
- 42:35[SPEAKER_01]: Good job.
- 42:36[SPEAKER_00]: Absolutely.
- 42:37[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, better atmosphere Saturday.
- 42:40[SPEAKER_01]: Memorial Stadium and Lincoln or Beaver Stadium Penn State Whiteout for USC.
- 42:45[SPEAKER_00]: Whiteout.
- 42:46[SPEAKER_00]: Whiteout.
- 42:47[SPEAKER_00]: I mean nothing against Memorial Stadium Nebraska, great fans.
- 42:51[SPEAKER_00]: Whiteout is a scene, of course, UCLA wants to blow out, not the Whiteout, but no, I take Whiteout.
- 42:59[SPEAKER_01]: I would under normal circumstances, but I think Penn State fans might be a little beaten down after two losses, and I think Nebraska fans are saying, hey, this is our chance.
- 43:08[SPEAKER_01]: I want to show Indiana what Nebraska can be.
- 43:11[SPEAKER_01]: So I think in this particular Saturday Memorial Stadium will be louder and prouder.
- 43:17[SPEAKER_00]: So you're going to take Nebraska when we picked the game.
- 43:19[SPEAKER_00]: Well, you know, we'll get there.
- 43:21[SPEAKER_01]: We'll get there and we'll talk about the overall standing switcher quite interesting.
- 43:28[SPEAKER_01]: which is your favorite P.J.
- 43:30[SPEAKER_01]: Flek.
- 43:31[SPEAKER_01]: Vampire P.J.
- 43:33[SPEAKER_01]: wiping his own players blood on his face or brown jugged.
- 43:37[SPEAKER_01]: You can just stop there.
- 43:39[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, stop.
- 43:42[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, he's on a heater, man.
- 43:44[SPEAKER_01]: He's been wild.
- 43:46[SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely wild when they have one big 10 games.
- 43:49[SPEAKER_00]: I hope they keep winning, because I want to see what's next, but I'm going during the choir on you.
- 43:55[SPEAKER_00]: You had me a blood on your face.
- 43:58[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
- 43:59[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, there's no other change left of that.
- 44:02[SPEAKER_01]: It's kind of unlike anything I've ever seen before.
- 44:04[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that was fantastic.
- 44:06[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah.
- 44:07[SPEAKER_01]: All right, Heisman winner, Jeremiah Smith or the field.
- 44:13[SPEAKER_00]: Do you know that Smith has more receiving yards by himself 823, then almost Tennessee has total, it's more than BYU has in receiving yards more than UCLA does as a team.
- 44:32[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, those that's according to iron college football stats.
- 44:36[SPEAKER_00]: No, no, no, I'm going to take that back according to iron college football stats.
- 44:42[SPEAKER_00]: The last nine Heisman so-called leaders in September, you know what happened to them?
- 44:50[SPEAKER_00]: They didn't win.
- 44:51[SPEAKER_00]: They didn't win.
- 44:52[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 44:52[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm going to go with the field right now.
- 44:54[SPEAKER_00]: Nothing against Smith.
- 44:56[SPEAKER_00]: You might end up winning up right now.
- 44:59[SPEAKER_00]: I'll still take the field.
- 45:00[SPEAKER_01]: All right, you can have the field.
- 45:02[SPEAKER_01]: I'll take JJ.
- 45:03[SPEAKER_01]: I think that through this next level.
- 45:06[SPEAKER_01]: Anyway, we'll see.
- 45:07[SPEAKER_01]: All right, better LSU can tuck in Miracle.
- 45:10[SPEAKER_01]: They play each other and they play in Commonwealth stadium where this happened 24 years ago, the Bluegrass miracle, the football bomb 75 yards multiple deflected touchdown on the last play with
- 45:25[SPEAKER_01]: Kentucky fans already hanging on the goalposts, or Kentucky's basketball, Marty Grommerico come back in 1994 when they're behind by 31.
- 45:35[SPEAKER_01]: I believe in the second half and still one in regulation.
- 45:41[SPEAKER_00]: Is this is this a football podcast or a hoops podcast?
- 45:44[SPEAKER_00]: We can do both.
- 45:45[SPEAKER_01]: We're multi-five.
- 45:46[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not doing both.
- 45:48[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 45:49[SPEAKER_00]: We're going to Bluegrass, Miracle.
- 45:51[SPEAKER_00]: They had dunked Guy Morris in Gatorade.
- 45:55[SPEAKER_00]: The fans, as you said, were hanging on the gold post.
- 46:00[SPEAKER_00]: Nick Sabin was on the LSU sideline, and he was.
- 46:03[SPEAKER_00]: That's a, I mean, nothing beats that.
- 46:06[SPEAKER_00]: It was, it was incredible.
- 46:09[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, when he threw the ball, there's no time left on the clock.
- 46:13[SPEAKER_00]: Randall D'Handerson 70 plus yards right so you know to me, that's a no-brainer choice if you take if you take the hoop side of this I don't know if we can continue this podcast I think I've been threatened that I have to take the football bond But I will take the football bomb because I was there I covered that game.
- 46:38[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, were you okay?
- 46:39[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yeah, yeah, and
- 46:42[SPEAKER_01]: I remember jumping to my feet and I was working for the career journal Michael Smith or Kentucky beatwriter was next to me, he jumped to his feet in disbelief and we're just staring at the field and all of a sudden he kind of like elbows me in the ribs like, oh man, we got a story.
- 47:00[SPEAKER_01]: I like, oh yeah, oh yeah, we're not a story.
- 47:02[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 47:04[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 47:05[SPEAKER_01]: That was great.
- 47:06[SPEAKER_01]: A small shameless plug here.
- 47:08[SPEAKER_01]: There is an ESPN documentary movie that I was on called Miracle, which discusses both of those games.
- 47:16[SPEAKER_01]: I get'll probably get back in circulation this week if you want to check for it.
- 47:20[SPEAKER_01]: It's well done.
- 47:21[SPEAKER_01]: Do you get residuals for that?
- 47:23[SPEAKER_01]: I get nothing.
- 47:24[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 47:24[SPEAKER_01]: I get nothing, but you do get this chance to see my handsome face.
- 47:28[SPEAKER_01]: Very good.
- 47:29[SPEAKER_01]: Alright, hit me with some stuff, Jean.
- 47:31[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, you're gonna laugh.
- 47:34[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 47:35[SPEAKER_00]: You've already answered it unfortunately.
- 47:36[SPEAKER_00]: I had Jeremiah Smith or the field.
- 47:40[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 47:42[SPEAKER_00]: All right, yes, we know where you stand on that one.
- 47:44[SPEAKER_00]: You're taking Smith.
- 47:46[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you know what?
- 47:46[SPEAKER_00]: I got no problem with that.
- 47:48[SPEAKER_00]: I'm just going with with the with the math right now.
- 47:51[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
- 47:52[SPEAKER_00]: Number two.
- 47:53[SPEAKER_00]: Chip Kelly is having a renaissance season.
- 47:57[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, as the offensive coordinator at Northwestern.
- 48:00[SPEAKER_00]: Is he an OC or a head coach next season.
- 48:06[SPEAKER_01]: Great question.
- 48:09[SPEAKER_01]: I think he's an OC, I think he, I think that's his happy place.
- 48:12[SPEAKER_01]: I think he wants to coach ball.
- 48:14[SPEAKER_01]: He wants to draw up plays and what they're doing in Northwestern right now is phenomenal.
- 48:18[SPEAKER_01]: They ran wing T against Penn State and ran them off the field.
- 48:22[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 48:23[SPEAKER_01]: They had Indiana on the ropes in Bloomington.
- 48:26[SPEAKER_01]: So I think he's doing what he loves and what he's best at.
- 48:29[SPEAKER_01]: And I think he stays as an OC.
- 48:31[SPEAKER_00]: All right, you can only pick one, who deserves to be in the top 25?
- 48:37[SPEAKER_00]: Nebraska, Kentucky, Wisconsin, or Wake Forest.
- 48:42[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, man, it's a great group.
- 48:47[SPEAKER_01]: I was leaning Kentucky as you start to go, but I'm going away for us.
- 48:50[SPEAKER_01]: I'm super impressed with what Wake has done.
- 48:53[SPEAKER_01]: Good wins, and the loss is nothing to be ashamed of, to Miami by 13 points.
- 48:59[SPEAKER_00]: All right, who will be in the same place in 2027?
- 49:04[SPEAKER_00]: Deon Sanders or Mike Norbell?
- 49:08[SPEAKER_01]: Oh.
- 49:09[SPEAKER_01]: I'm gonna, I think right now, Norvel, I don't think Colorado fires D on Sanders.
- 49:17[SPEAKER_01]: I just, I'm not sure whether D on Sanders gonna want to keep going if this season continues down the drain.
- 49:22[SPEAKER_01]: And I think Norvel has shown signs that of getting it together if they continue to do that, they win eight or more games and he's super expensive to fire, I think he's there.
- 49:33[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 49:34[SPEAKER_00]: And then because you're about to inflict pain on me,
- 49:38[SPEAKER_00]: reference scene the last week's picks.
- 49:41[SPEAKER_00]: So I, you know, I feel like I'm going to do something pre-emptive here.
- 49:45[SPEAKER_00]: What is more painful.
- 49:48[SPEAKER_00]: Losing like Kentucky did in 2002, which of course you witnessed.
- 49:54[SPEAKER_00]: or the way Mizzou did to Colorado in 1990.
- 50:00[SPEAKER_00]: It's the 36 year anniversary, almost to the day, and happened on October 6th, 1990 with the fifth down play.
- 50:10[SPEAKER_01]: There's no doubt the fifth down play is worse because it was a miscarriage of justice.
- 50:15[SPEAKER_01]: was just an absolute stolen game.
- 50:18[SPEAKER_01]: So that is worse, even than the multi-tipped ball coach already wearing gatorade loss.
- 50:27[SPEAKER_00]: OK, sorry, I mean, are you feeling hollow and angry at the moment?
- 50:34[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, bring back some terrible memories for you.
- 50:38[SPEAKER_01]: You don't want to even want to go on and on about Missouri's North End Zone and the crimes that have been committed there.
- 50:44[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, good.
- 50:45[SPEAKER_00]: I just want you to just to suffer just for a few moments before we get to the picks because because you're going to suffer here as we go through.
- 50:53[SPEAKER_01]: I am now I was foreign to last week.
- 50:57[SPEAKER_01]: Jean was two and four.
- 50:58[SPEAKER_01]: I have a three game lead plus the bear.
- 51:01[SPEAKER_01]: plus the fat bear.
- 51:03[SPEAKER_01]: I'm 18 at 14 kind of respectable now.
- 51:05[SPEAKER_00]: Pass you.
- 51:06[SPEAKER_01]: 15 and 17, trying to get to 500, working on it.
- 51:11[SPEAKER_01]: Let's see if you can catch up to me.
- 51:13[SPEAKER_01]: This way.
- 51:14[SPEAKER_01]: You ready?
- 51:15[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 51:16[SPEAKER_01]: I start with the big one in Bryant Denny.
- 51:19[SPEAKER_01]: Georgia getting a one and a half.
- 51:21[SPEAKER_01]: That thing's flipped.
- 51:23[SPEAKER_01]: It started.
- 51:24[SPEAKER_01]: Georgia was giving one and a half.
- 51:25[SPEAKER_01]: Now it's getting one and a half at Alabama.
- 51:28[SPEAKER_01]: Your thoughts.
- 51:33[SPEAKER_00]: Running back situation at Georgia, those guys are some are banged up to Boris showing that he can be Georgia during the regular season at least.
- 51:44[SPEAKER_00]: I'll I'll take Bama.
- 51:47[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, me too.
- 51:48[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's gonna be a shootout, which every once and a while has happened in this series kind of but mostly, you know, when it was Nick against Kirby, it was usually
- 51:57[SPEAKER_01]: You know, blunt force trauma, defensive battle, but both these teams can score.
- 52:02[SPEAKER_01]: So I think this, the winning team for sure gets in the 40s, maybe both of them.
- 52:07[SPEAKER_01]: But I'm taking one of their holds up.
- 52:08[SPEAKER_01]: If the web, that's right.
- 52:09[SPEAKER_01]: That is a prediction based on a clean track.
- 52:13[SPEAKER_01]: So to speak, and we have no idea of what that's going to be like.
- 52:16[SPEAKER_01]: I'm sure they all have the field covered,
- 52:19[SPEAKER_01]: We'll see what that does.
- 52:21[SPEAKER_01]: All right, Tane, we've talked about this Indiana at Nebraska, who's giving seven and a half, where are you going?
- 52:30[SPEAKER_00]: Well, yeah, we sort of discuss this one.
- 52:33[SPEAKER_00]: As much as I think Nebraska is improved, I don't think they're Indiana improved yet.
- 52:38[SPEAKER_00]: I think they're getting there, but I'm going to take Indiana and lay the points.
- 52:44[SPEAKER_01]: So am I shockingly I know, but in digging into Indiana some this week, like the the stuff they do well.
- 52:53[SPEAKER_01]: is incredibly consistent and holds up.
- 52:56[SPEAKER_01]: The things they did well last year, they are doing well this year.
- 52:59[SPEAKER_01]: They have one turnover.
- 53:01[SPEAKER_01]: It was on special teams.
- 53:02[SPEAKER_01]: They fumbled upon with less than two minutes left in a 55 zero victory over Hart Howard.
- 53:08[SPEAKER_01]: The guy that fumbled upon hasn't returned another punt.
- 53:11[SPEAKER_01]: That's Signetti.
- 53:12[SPEAKER_01]: Ball security is everything.
- 53:14[SPEAKER_01]: You lose a fumble you're out.
- 53:16[SPEAKER_01]: Here's my stat.
- 53:18[SPEAKER_01]: Indiana has run 1,359 consecutive offensive plays without losing a fumble.
- 53:28[SPEAKER_01]: It's unbelievable, has to be at all time NCAA record, has to be.
- 53:32[SPEAKER_01]: So you don't do that.
- 53:33[SPEAKER_01]: You don't turn the ball over.
- 53:35[SPEAKER_01]: You don't commit penalties.
- 53:37[SPEAKER_01]: Nebraska has lived on turnovers.
- 53:40[SPEAKER_01]: That's one of the reasons they're undefeated and you're not going to get any of this week.
- 53:43[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm taking the Hoosiers.
- 53:45[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, because usually, you know, that worm turns on the turnover's thing, you know, with I you at some point, they can't sustain that, but somehow I you does.
- 53:56[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, led the nation turn over margin last year.
- 54:00[SPEAKER_01]: Could do it again this year there.
- 54:01[SPEAKER_01]: They only have three takeaways so far.
- 54:03[SPEAKER_01]: That's one departure from last year.
- 54:05[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 54:05[SPEAKER_01]: All right, red river Oklahoma, reeling a bit, getting seven and a
- 54:15[SPEAKER_00]: Under normal circumstances, I would take the seven and a half and run.
- 54:20[SPEAKER_00]: I still believe in OU's defense.
- 54:23[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not entirely convinced about Texas's offense, but OU's offense gives me absolutely nothing to cling to.
- 54:32[SPEAKER_00]: So I will take Texas in this one.
- 54:36[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going sooners here.
- 54:37[SPEAKER_01]: I have just seen many, many Red River games where the team that comes in in disarray rises up and plays one of its best games.
- 54:45[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you're right.
- 54:46[SPEAKER_01]: You're right.
- 54:47[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not sure they can win, but I think they turn this into just an absolute defensive slobber knocker.
- 54:54[SPEAKER_01]: and it's 17 to 14 or 14 to 10 or whatever because that's really all that's Oklahoma's only chance.
- 55:01[SPEAKER_01]: They also, they have both both teams have had two out of week off, but if you're going to try to get a quarterback mentally out of the ditch, two weeks is a good time to do that.
- 55:12[SPEAKER_01]: And so we'll see what they've been able to get John Mathier out of his own head into a point where he can play better in this game.
- 55:19[SPEAKER_00]: Well, inventables seems to have made it clear that
- 55:25[SPEAKER_00]: isn't doing the job, they might turn to somebody else.
- 55:28[SPEAKER_00]: The other guys have been getting first team reps. Yeah, I mean, it's possible.
- 55:34[SPEAKER_01]: I also think you say that because the way material plays is probably not the way the other two guys play.
- 55:39[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, because it's kind of a single wing quarterback.
- 55:42[SPEAKER_01]: All right, you see, LA at Oregon.
- 55:44[SPEAKER_01]: We've discussed that.
- 55:45[SPEAKER_01]: Bruins getting 11 and a half.
- 55:47[SPEAKER_01]: Your thoughts.
- 55:49[SPEAKER_00]: Both teams have had two weeks to prepare for this one.
- 55:52[SPEAKER_00]: No Dante Moore.
- 55:53[SPEAKER_00]: He was officially ruled out.
- 55:56[SPEAKER_00]: I think you see I can keep it within that 11 and a half.
- 56:01[SPEAKER_01]: I agree.
- 56:02[SPEAKER_01]: It's great to have Dylan Raleh for your backup if you're the ducks.
- 56:06[SPEAKER_01]: And the home atmosphere is something.
- 56:08[SPEAKER_01]: But if you see a lake and run the ball and shrink the game, which they have been able to run the ball exactly well.
- 56:15[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 56:16[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to give the Bruins at least a chance to cover.
- 56:18[SPEAKER_01]: I can see that being a seven to 10 point game.
- 56:21[SPEAKER_01]: So we're going to agreement there last one before the lock of the week.
- 56:25[SPEAKER_01]: USC getting one and a half at Penn State.
- 56:29[SPEAKER_00]: I'm sure you're not going to be with me on this one.
- 56:31[SPEAKER_00]: I know USC has shown that it has problems when it travels to the east.
- 56:37[SPEAKER_00]: We saw it earlier this season against at Rutgers.
- 56:42[SPEAKER_00]: And in the past, when they got on a plane and had that way,
- 56:46[SPEAKER_00]: I just simply think USC is a better team.
- 56:50[SPEAKER_00]: I think it has more talent and in Penn State, certainly has some profound issues right now.
- 56:57[SPEAKER_00]: So I will take U.S.A. and cross my fingers, I guess.
- 57:03[SPEAKER_01]: Well, darn it, I actually agree with you.
- 57:07[SPEAKER_01]: I am out on Penn State.
- 57:09[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think that's a great team right now.
- 57:11[SPEAKER_00]: And I just think in terms of talent,
- 57:14[SPEAKER_01]: uh U.S.C.
- 57:15[SPEAKER_01]: has more of it.
- 57:16[SPEAKER_01]: So we're agreement there.
- 57:18[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 57:18[SPEAKER_01]: Do you have a lock of the week?
- 57:21[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I never didn't use right, but I'm sure I'll throw an out there for you.
- 57:25[SPEAKER_00]: Um, pit is I believe in our producer can't can double-check is minus four uh against North Carolina uh Carolina at pit and uh I think that's a a small price to pay for pit.
- 57:42[SPEAKER_00]: I know they lost
- 57:44[SPEAKER_00]: But Gernard did a nice job in relief.
- 57:48[SPEAKER_00]: He's had a whole week getting the first team reps.
- 57:52[SPEAKER_00]: I think pit has a chip on a shoulder pads and and I just like that team.
- 57:58[SPEAKER_00]: I like to do see I like the just like the vibe that they have.
- 58:02[SPEAKER_00]: So I'll go with pit and lay the points.
- 58:05[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, I can't do that will be in charge of figuring out the line on that, but I don't necessarily disagree with you on that one.
- 58:13[SPEAKER_01]: I think that's got a chance to pan out.
- 58:17[SPEAKER_01]: I am going to Morgan Town, West Virginia, and I'm going to take the home mountaineers getting three against Arizona.
- 58:33[SPEAKER_01]: You what should still be a pretty charged atmosphere.
- 58:38[SPEAKER_01]: I know the West Virginia defense hasn't been very good.
- 58:42[SPEAKER_00]: The last couple of weeks did you hear what the defense of coordinator said about now?
- 58:47[SPEAKER_00]: He said they're like, we're the worst defense in the country.
- 58:51[SPEAKER_00]: Like we're awful.
- 58:52[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, he just blew him up.
- 58:56[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I mean, he's not wrong necessarily.
- 59:02[SPEAKER_01]: getting yourself in the face with the cold water of truth can can wake you up so i i think they're going to play better it's also it's a 9 a.m. kick off for Arizona which is not ideal body clockwise so give me the mountaineers to cover the three i uh one quick story for you here from uh uh Vernon indiana we've got
- 59:28[SPEAKER_01]: We have a driver under the influence.
- 59:33[SPEAKER_01]: No, yes, we do in broad daylight, turning backward donuts and the lawn in front of the courthouse, like tearing up the grass to an incredible degree.
- 59:47[SPEAKER_01]: It's on video, there's, I mean, this person is going at it.
- 59:53[SPEAKER_01]: hard worker that like a you're Ricky Bobby or stock car driver they they're impressed and jealous of what this this driver's doing can you tell me guess give me give me the age range of the driver here and and gender.
- 1:00:09[SPEAKER_00]: Well since you dig these crazy things up I have no idea what is I'm going to say it's a 77 year old woman.
- 1:00:18[SPEAKER_00]: Got your clothes.
- 1:00:19[SPEAKER_01]: Have you heard about this?
- 1:00:21[SPEAKER_01]: No, no idea.
- 1:00:22[SPEAKER_00]: I thought I thought you were doing the Nebraska urinal thing.
- 1:00:26[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, I forgot that he didn't Nebraska urinal thing.
- 1:00:30[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, well.
- 1:00:31[SPEAKER_01]: You know what, that's the problem.
- 1:00:33[SPEAKER_01]: Sometimes the rundown gets away from me.
- 1:00:36[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, no, that's, we can also, we can buy in Nebraska, you're an old, if you want.
- 1:00:41[SPEAKER_01]: But I just, I'm, in trans by a 67 year old woman tearing up the courthouse lawn eddy seven, okay.
- 1:00:48[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:00:49[SPEAKER_00]: So I want to see what you're doing now.
- 1:00:51[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, hi, she's an Ohio State fan.
- 1:00:53[SPEAKER_00]: I know, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
- 1:00:56[SPEAKER_01]: That's, that's southern Indiana, pretty sure
- 1:01:02[SPEAKER_01]: You've, she's probably a Hoosier.
