- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Tuesday, it's the 18th of
- 0:16February, and you have said, come on Sean, hop into my day,
- 0:20let us get back into that story and hear a little bit more of
- 0:24God's word. And I am very grateful that
- 0:26you've done that. And we're going to continue
- 0:28reading along in the Book of Second Kings and friends.
- 0:32You would be forgiven if you said to me, Sean, boy, God is so
- 0:37brutal. He orders through the prophets
- 0:40the mass murder of all of these dynasties.
- 0:43People are then slaughtered, Hulless bolus.
- 0:46It's terrible. How can that be part of this
- 0:49loving, generous God that we serve and that we know in Jesus?
- 0:54Well, a couple of things to say. Firstly, these are very, very
- 0:59different times. We live in a world where human
- 1:01life is held up as the most important thing.
- 1:04But back then lives were tied to dynasties, lives were tied to
- 1:09families. And when one family went out of
- 1:12power and a new family came into power, the way that they
- 1:14guaranteed their power was to wipe out those other lines.
- 1:19So this was just the way that kingship worked in the ancient
- 1:24Near East. When one king came into power,
- 1:27the only way they could guarantee their power and the
- 1:29thing that they did was to wipe out their opposition.
- 1:33So what sounds brutal to our ears, to the ears of someone of
- 1:36the time hearing this story, they would say, well, of course
- 1:39that's what you do it. It would be foolishness not to
- 1:41do that. The other thing to note is that
- 1:45the style of writing that was used at that time used absolute
- 1:50statements. So they would talk about
- 1:51slaughtering a nation, women, and children.
- 1:55That doesn't necessarily mean that everyone was slaughtered,
- 1:59it simply means that it was an incredibly dominant victory, and
- 2:03that is the language that was used to describe dominance in
- 2:07the victory. So when the author talks about
- 2:10God being responsible for that slaughter, it's not necessarily
- 2:13saying that God ordered the slaughter of the innocents, but
- 2:17saying that God was the dominant victor.
- 2:20And that is the language they use to describe that.
- 2:24So that maybe helps put into context some of the brutality
- 2:27that we will read that to our ears sounds abominable, but to
- 2:32the ears of those who understood this genre, it makes perfect
- 2:36sense. So come with me, friends, back
- 2:38into this time of the world, where we see the rise and the
- 2:42fall and the decimation of kings and their families as we read
- 2:46together. Second Kings Chapter 10.
- 2:58Ahab had seventy sons living in the city of Samaria.
- 3:03So Jehu wrote letters and sent them to Samaria, to the elders
- 3:07and officials of the city and to the guardians of King Ahab's
- 3:10sons. He said the King's sons are with
- 3:14you and you have at your disposal Chariots, horses, a
- 3:19fortified city and weapons. As soon as you receive this
- 3:23letter, select the best qualified of your master's sons
- 3:26to be your king and prepare to fight for Ahab's dynasty.
- 3:31But they were paralysed with fear and said we've seen that 2
- 3:35kings couldn't stand against this man, what can we do?
- 3:39So the palace and city administrators, together with
- 3:42the elders and the guardians of the King's sons sent this
- 3:46message to Jehu. We are your servants and we'll
- 3:50do anything you tell us. We will not make anyone king.
- 3:54Do whatever you think is best. Jiha responded with a second
- 3:58letter. If you are on my side and are
- 4:01going to obey me, bring the heads of your master's sons to
- 4:05me at Jezreel by this time to Morrow.
- 4:09Now the 70 sons of the king were being cared for by the leaders
- 4:13of Samaria, where they had been raised since childhood.
- 4:16When the letter arrived, the leaders killed all 70 of the
- 4:20King's sons. They placed their heads in
- 4:23baskets and presented them to Jehu.
- 4:26At Jezreel, a messenger went to Jehu and said they have brought
- 4:31the heads of the King's sons. So Jehu ordered pile them in two
- 4:38heaps at the entrance of the city gate and leave them there
- 4:41until morning. In the morning he went out and
- 4:45spoke to the crowd that had gathered around them.
- 4:48You are not to blame, he told them.
- 4:51I am the one who conspired against my master and killed
- 4:54him. But who killed all these?
- 4:57You can be sure that the message of the Lord that was spoken
- 5:00concerning Ahab's family will not fail.
- 5:03The Lord declared through his servant Elijah that this would
- 5:07happen. Then Jehu killed all who were
- 5:10left of Ahab's relatives living in Jezreel and all his important
- 5:14officials, his personal friends and his priests.
- 5:18So Ahab was left without a single survivor.
- 5:22Then Jehu set out for Samaria. Along the way, while he was at
- 5:27Beth Echid of the Shepherds, he met some relatives of King
- 5:31Ahaziah of Judah. Who are you?
- 5:34He asked them and they replied, We are the relatives of King
- 5:38Ahaziah. We are going to visit the sons
- 5:41of King Ahab and the sons of the Queen Mother.
- 5:45Take them alive, Jihu shouted to his men and they captured all 42
- 5:50of them and killed them at the well of Beth Eckard.
- 5:54None of them escaped when Jihu left.
- 5:57There he met Johanadab, son of Recab, who was coming to meet
- 6:01him After they had greeted each other, Jihu said to him.
- 6:06Are you as loyal to me as I am to you?
- 6:10Yes, I am, Johanadab replied. If you are, Jihu said, Then give
- 6:16me your hand. So Johanidab put out his hand,
- 6:20and Jehu helped him into the chariot.
- 6:23Then Jehu said, Now come with me and see how devoted I am to the
- 6:29Lord. So Johanidab rode along with
- 6:32him. When Jehu arrived in Samaria, he
- 6:36killed everyone who was left there from Ahab's family, just
- 6:40as the Lord had promised through Elijah.
- 6:43Then Jehu called a meeting of all the people of the city and
- 6:47said to them, Ahab's worship of Bal was nothing compared to the
- 6:51way I will worship him. Therefore, summon all the
- 6:55prophets and worshippers of Bal and call together all his
- 6:58priests. See to it that every one of them
- 7:01comes, for I am going to offer a great sacrifice to Bal.
- 7:05Anyone who fails to come will be put to death.
- 7:09But Jehu's cunning plan was to destroy all the worshippers of
- 7:12Bal. Then Jihu ordered, prepare a
- 7:16solemn assembly to worship Bal. So they did.
- 7:20He sent messengers throughout all Israel, summoning those who
- 7:24worshipped Bal. They all came.
- 7:26Not a single one remained behind, and they filled the
- 7:30temple of Bal from one end to the other.
- 7:33And Jihu instructed the keeper of the wardrobe be sure that
- 7:38every worshipper of Bal wears one of these robes.
- 7:42Sir, robes were given to them. Then Jehu went into the temple
- 7:46of Bal with Johanodab, son of Recab.
- 7:50Jehu said to the worshippers of Bal, make sure no one who
- 7:54worships the Lord is here, only those who worship Bal.
- 7:59So they were all inside the temple to offer sacrifices and
- 8:02burnt offerings. Now Jehu had stationed 80 of his
- 8:06men outside the building and warned them.
- 8:09If you let anyone escape, you will pay for it with your own
- 8:13life. As soon as Jehu had finished
- 8:16sacrificing the burnt offering, he commanded his guards and
- 8:20officers Go in and kill all of them.
- 8:24Don't let a single one escape. So they killed them all with
- 8:28their swords, and the guards and officers dragged their bodies
- 8:32outside. Then Jehu's men went into the
- 8:35innermost fortress of the Temple of Bal.
- 8:38They dragged out the sacred pillar used in the worship of
- 8:41Baal and burnt it. They smashed the sacred pillar
- 8:45and wrecked the temple of Baal, converting it into a public
- 8:49toilet, as it remains to this day.
- 8:52In this way Jehu destroyed every trace of Baal worship from
- 8:57Israel. He did not, however, destroy the
- 9:00gold calves in Bethel and Dan with which Jeroboam son of Nebat
- 9:05had caused Israel to sin. Nonetheless, the Lord said to
- 9:09Jehu, You have done well in following my instructions to
- 9:14destroy the family of Ahab. Therefore your descendants will
- 9:19be kings of Israel down to the 4th generation.
- 9:23But Jehu did not obey the law of the Lord, the God of Israel.
- 9:27With all his heart. He refused to turn from the sins
- 9:30that Jeroboam had LED Israel to commit.
- 9:34At about that time, the Lord began to cut down the size of
- 9:38Israel's territory. King Hazael conquered several
- 9:42sections of the country east of the Jordan River, including all
- 9:46of Gilead, Gad, Ruben, and Manasseh.
- 9:50He conquered the area from the town of Arroyo by the Arnon
- 9:54Gorge to as far north as Gilead and Bashan.
- 9:58The rest of the events in Jehu's reign, everything he did, and
- 10:02all his achievements are recorded in the Book of the
- 10:05History of the Kings of Israel. When Jehu died, he was buried in
- 10:11Samaria. Then his son Jehovah has became
- 10:14the next king. In all, Jehu reigned over Israel
- 10:19from Samaria for 28 years. Ah, Jesus, we see in this
- 10:33confronting chapter that you have this recipe for success for
- 10:38us. And that recipe for success the
- 10:41way that we would have lives of rich joy and fulfilment in you
- 10:48is when we place you alone above all else.
- 10:53Oh Lord, let there be no biles in our life.
- 10:56Let there be no golden calves. Let there be nothing that sits
- 11:01anywhere near you atop that throne of our life.
- 11:05And you are the most incredible King Jesus, because you ascend
- 11:10to that throne above all else by sacrificing yourself, by living
- 11:15a life of love, and by showing us how much you value us above
- 11:23your own well being. You know you are an amazing King
- 11:28and we just fall before you, our servant King.
- 11:33May we too be servants in love to those around us.
- 11:40So we praise you, and we lift you up, and we pray all of these
- 11:45things in your precious name, Amen.
