Speaker 1: Chapter two, a description of the farmer's daughter. The author
• 0:05
Speaker 1: carried to a market town and then to the metropolis.
• 0:09
Speaker 1: The particulars of his journey. My mistress had a daughter
• 0:14
Speaker 1: of nine years old, a child of towardly parts for
• 0:17
Speaker 1: her age, very dexterous at her needle, and skillful in
• 0:21
Speaker 1: dressing her baby. Her mother and she contrived to fit
• 0:25
Speaker 1: up the baby's cradle for me against night. The cradle
• 0:29
Speaker 1: was put into a small drawer of a cabinet, and
• 0:32
Speaker 1: the drawer placed upon a hanging shelf for fear of
• 0:35
Speaker 1: the rats. This was my bed all the time I
• 0:38
Speaker 1: stayed with those people, though made more convenient by degrees
• 0:42
Speaker 1: as I began to learn their language and make my
• 0:44
Speaker 1: wants known. This young girl was so handy that after
• 0:50
Speaker 1: I had once or twice pulled off my clothes before her,
• 0:52
Speaker 1: she was able to dress and undress me, though I
• 0:55
Speaker 1: never gave her that trouble when she would let me
• 0:57
Speaker 1: do either myself. She made me seven shirts and some
• 1:02
Speaker 1: other linen of as fine cloth as could be got,
• 1:05
Speaker 1: which indeed was coarser than sackcloth, and these she constantly
• 1:09
Speaker 1: washed for me with her own hands. She was likewise
• 1:12
Speaker 1: my schoolmistress to teach me the language. When I pointed
• 1:17
Speaker 1: to anything, she told me the name of it in
• 1:18
Speaker 1: her own tongue, so that in a few days I
• 1:21
Speaker 1: was able to call for whatever I had a mind to.
• 1:25
Speaker 1: She was very good natured and not above forty feet high.
• 1:28
Speaker 1: Being little for her age, she gave me the name
• 1:32
Speaker 1: of Grildrigg, which the family took up and afterwards the
• 1:35
Speaker 1: whole kingdom. The word imports what the Latins called nanunculus,
• 1:40
Speaker 1: the Italians Homo keel tino, and the English Manikin to her.
• 1:46
Speaker 1: I chiefly owe my preservation in that country. We never
• 1:49
Speaker 1: parted while I was there. I called her my glumdale
• 1:53
Speaker 1: glitch or little nurse, and should be guilty of great
• 1:57
Speaker 1: ingratitude if I admitted this honor mention of her care
• 2:00
Speaker 1: and affection towards me, which I heartily wish it lay
• 2:04
Speaker 1: in my power to requite as she deserves, instead of
• 2:07
Speaker 1: being the innocent but an happy instrument of a disgrace,
• 2:10
Speaker 1: as I have too much reason to fear. It now
• 2:14
Speaker 1: began to be known and talked of in the neighborhood
• 2:17
Speaker 1: that my master had found a strange animal in the field,
• 2:20
Speaker 1: about the bigness of a splack nook, but exactly shaped
• 2:23
Speaker 1: in every part like a human creature, which it likewise
• 2:26
Speaker 1: imitated in all its actions, seemed to speak in a
• 2:30
Speaker 1: little language of its own, had already learned several words
• 2:33
Speaker 1: of theirs. When erect upon two legs, was tame and gentle,
• 2:38
Speaker 1: would come when it was called, do whatever it was bid.
• 2:41
Speaker 1: Had the finest limbs in the world, and a complexion
• 2:44
Speaker 1: fairer than a nobleman's daughter of three years old. Another farmer,
• 2:49
Speaker 1: who lived hard by and was a particular friend of
• 2:52
Speaker 1: my master, came on a visit on purpose to inquire
• 2:56
Speaker 1: into the truth of this story. I was immediately produced
• 3:00
Speaker 1: and placed upon a table, where I walked as I
• 3:03
Speaker 1: was commanded, drew my hanger, put it up again, made
• 3:07
Speaker 1: my reverence to my master's guest, asked him in his
• 3:10
Speaker 1: own language how he did, and told him he was welcome,
• 3:13
Speaker 1: Just as my little nurse had instructed me. This man,
• 3:18
Speaker 1: who was old and incited, put on his spectacles to
• 3:21
Speaker 1: behold me better, at which I could not forbear, laughing
• 3:24
Speaker 1: very heartily, for his eyes appeared like the full moon
• 3:27
Speaker 1: shining into a chamber at two windows. Our people who
• 3:31
Speaker 1: discovered the cause of my mirth bore my company in laughing,
• 3:36
Speaker 1: at which the old fellow was full enough to be
• 3:37
Speaker 1: angry and out of countenance. He had the character of
• 3:41
Speaker 1: a great miser, and to my misfortune, he well deserved
• 3:45
Speaker 1: it by the cursed advice he gave my master to
• 3:48
Speaker 1: show me as a sight upon a market day in
• 3:50
Speaker 1: the next town, which was half an hour's riding and
• 3:53
Speaker 1: two and twenty miles from our house. I guessed there
• 3:58
Speaker 1: was some mischief when I observed my master and his
• 4:01
Speaker 1: friend whispering together, sometimes pointing at me, and my fears
• 4:06
Speaker 1: made me fancy that I overheard and understood some of
• 4:09
Speaker 1: their words. But the next morning, Glumdalklitch, my little nurse,
• 4:14
Speaker 1: told me the whole matter, which she had cunningly picked
• 4:17
Speaker 1: out from her mother. The poor girl laid me on
• 4:20
Speaker 1: her bosom and fell a weeping with shame and grief.
• 4:23
Speaker 1: She apprehended some mischief would happen to me from rude,
• 4:27
Speaker 1: vulgar folks, who might squeeze me to death or break
• 4:30
Speaker 1: one of my limbs by taking me in their hands.
• 4:35
Speaker 1: She had also observed how modest I was in my nature,
• 4:38
Speaker 1: how nicely I regarded my honor, and what an indignity,
• 4:41
Speaker 1: I should conceive it to be exposed for money, as
• 4:44
Speaker 1: a public spectacle to the meanest of the people. She
• 4:48
Speaker 1: said to her Papa and Mamma had promised that Grildric
• 4:51
Speaker 1: should be hers, but now she found they meant to
• 4:55
Speaker 1: serve her as they did last year when they pretended
• 4:57
Speaker 1: to give her a lamb, and yet as soon as
• 5:00
Speaker 1: it was fact sold it to a butcher. For my
• 5:03
Speaker 1: own part, I may truly affirm that I was less
• 5:06
Speaker 1: concerned than my nurse. I had a strong hope which
• 5:11
Speaker 1: never left me, that I should one day recover my liberty,
• 5:15
Speaker 1: And as to the ignominy of being carried about for
• 5:17
Speaker 1: a monster, I considered myself to be a perfect stranger
• 5:21
Speaker 1: in the country, and that such a misfortune could never
• 5:24
Speaker 1: be charged upon me as a reproach, if ever I
• 5:27
Speaker 1: should return to England, since the King of Great Britain himself,
• 5:31
Speaker 1: in my condition, must have undergone the same distress. My master,
• 5:36
Speaker 1: pursuant to the advice of his friend, carried me in
• 5:39
Speaker 1: a box the next market day to the neighboring town,
• 5:42
Speaker 1: and took along with him his little daughter, my nurse,
• 5:45
Speaker 1: upon a pillion behind him. The box was close on
• 5:49
Speaker 1: every side, with a little door for me to go
• 5:51
Speaker 1: in and out, and a few gibnet holes to let
• 5:54
Speaker 1: in air. The girl had been so careful as to
• 5:58
Speaker 1: put the quilt of her baby's bed into it for
• 6:00
Speaker 1: me to lie down on it. However, I was terribly
• 6:03
Speaker 1: shaken and discomposed in this journey, though it was but
• 6:07
Speaker 1: of half an hour, for the horse went about forty
• 6:09
Speaker 1: feet at every step, and trotted so high that the
• 6:13
Speaker 1: agitation was equal to the rising and falling of a
• 6:16
Speaker 1: ship in a great storm, but much more frequent. Our
• 6:20
Speaker 1: journey was somewhat farther than from London to Saint Alban's.
• 6:23
Speaker 1: My master alighted at an inn which he used to frequent,
• 6:27
Speaker 1: and after consulting a while with the innkeeper and making
• 6:31
Speaker 1: some necessary preparations, he hired the goltrod or crier to
• 6:36
Speaker 1: give notice through the town of a strange creature to
• 6:38
Speaker 1: be seen at the sign of the Green Eagle, not
• 6:42
Speaker 1: so big as a spluck nock, an annual in that country,
• 6:45
Speaker 1: very finely shaped, about six feet long, and in every
• 6:48
Speaker 1: part of the body resembling a human creature, could speak
• 6:52
Speaker 1: several words, and before a hundred diverting tricks. I was
• 6:57
Speaker 1: placed upon a table in the largest room of the
• 6:59
Speaker 1: nar which might be near three hundred feet square. My
• 7:04
Speaker 1: little nur stood on a low stool close to the
• 7:06
Speaker 1: table to take care of me and direct what I
• 7:09
Speaker 1: should do. My master to avoid a crowd would suffer
• 7:13
Speaker 1: only thirty people at a time to see me. I
• 7:16
Speaker 1: walked about on the table as the girl commanded. She
• 7:19
Speaker 1: asked me questions as far as she knew. My understanding
• 7:22
Speaker 1: of the language reached, and I answered them as loud
• 7:25
Speaker 1: as I could. I turned about several times to the company,
• 7:29
Speaker 1: paid my humble respects, said they were welcome, and used
• 7:33
Speaker 1: some other speeches I had been taught. I took up
• 7:37
Speaker 1: a thimble filled with liqueur which Glumdalklitch had given me
• 7:40
Speaker 1: for a cup, and drank their health. I dropped my
• 7:44
Speaker 1: hanger and flourished with it after the manner of fences
• 7:46
Speaker 1: in England. My nurse gave me a part of a straw,
• 7:50
Speaker 1: which I exercised as a pike, having learnt the art
• 7:53
Speaker 1: in my youth. I was that day shown to twelve
• 7:56
Speaker 1: sets of company, and as often forced to act over
• 7:59
Speaker 1: again the same fopperies till I was half dead with
• 8:02
Speaker 1: weariness and vexation, for those who had seen me made
• 8:06
Speaker 1: such wonderful reports that the people were ready to break
• 8:09
Speaker 1: down the doors to come in. My master, for his
• 8:13
Speaker 1: own interest, would not suffer any one to touch me
• 8:15
Speaker 1: except my nurse, and to prevent danger, bengeres were set
• 8:20
Speaker 1: round the table at a distance as to put me
• 8:22
Speaker 1: out of everybody's reach. However, an unlucky schoolboy aimed a
• 8:27
Speaker 1: hazel nut directly at my head, which very narrowly missed me.
• 8:31
Speaker 1: Otherwise it came with so much violence that it would
• 8:35
Speaker 1: have infallibly knocked out my brains, for it was almost
• 8:38
Speaker 1: as large as the small pumpkin. But I had the
• 8:41
Speaker 1: satisfaction to see the young rogue well beaten and turned
• 8:44
Speaker 1: out of the room. My master gave public notice that
• 8:48
Speaker 1: he would show me again the next market day, and
• 8:50
Speaker 1: in the meantime he prepared a covenant vehicle for me,
• 8:54
Speaker 1: which he had reason enough to do, for I was
• 8:56
Speaker 1: so tired with my first journey, and with entertaining company
• 9:00
Speaker 1: for eight hours together, that I could hardly stand upon
• 9:03
Speaker 1: my legs or speak a word. It was at least
• 9:06
Speaker 1: three days before I recovered my strength, and that I
• 9:09
Speaker 1: might have no rest at home all the neighboring gentlemen
• 9:12
Speaker 1: from a hundred miles round, hearing of my fame, came
• 9:15
Speaker 1: to see me. At my master's own house. There could
• 9:19
Speaker 1: not be fewer than thirty persons with their wives and children,
• 9:23
Speaker 1: for the country is very populous, and my master demanded
• 9:26
Speaker 1: the rate of a full room whenever he showed me
• 9:28
Speaker 1: at home, although it were only to a single family,
• 9:32
Speaker 1: so that for some time I had but little ease
• 9:34
Speaker 1: every day of the week except Wednesday, which is there sabbath.
• 9:38
Speaker 1: Although I were not carried to the town, my master,
• 9:42
Speaker 1: finding how profitable I was likely to be, resolved to
• 9:46
Speaker 1: carry me to the most considerable cities of the kingdom.
• 9:49
Speaker 1: Having therefore provided himself with all the things necessary for
• 9:53
Speaker 1: a long journey, and settled his affairs at home, he
• 9:56
Speaker 1: took leave of his wife, and upon the seventeenth of
• 9:59
Speaker 1: orbus Gust seventeen o three, about two months after my arrival,
• 10:04
Speaker 1: we set out for the metropolis, situated near the middle
• 10:08
Speaker 1: of that empire and about three thousand miles distance from
• 10:11
Speaker 1: our house. My master made his daughter, Glumdalklitch, ride behind him.
• 10:17
Speaker 1: She carried me on her lap in a box tied
• 10:19
Speaker 1: about her waist. The girl had lined it on all
• 10:23
Speaker 1: sides with the softest cloth she could get, well quilted underneath,
• 10:27
Speaker 1: furnished it with her baby's bed, provided me with linen
• 10:30
Speaker 1: and other necessaries, and made everything as convenient as she could.
• 10:35
Speaker 1: We had no other company but a boy of the house,
• 10:38
Speaker 1: who rode after us with the luggage. My master's design
• 10:41
Speaker 1: was to show me in all the towns by the way,
• 10:44
Speaker 1: and to step out of the road for fifty or
• 10:46
Speaker 1: a hundred miles to any village or person of qualities
• 10:49
Speaker 1: house where he might expect custom. We made easy journeys
• 10:54
Speaker 1: of not above seven or eight score miles a day
• 10:57
Speaker 1: for glumdalklitch on purpose to sept complained. She was tired
• 11:02
Speaker 1: with the trotting of the horse. She often took me
• 11:04
Speaker 1: out of my box at my own desire to give
• 11:07
Speaker 1: me air and show me the country, but always held
• 11:10
Speaker 1: me fast by a leading string, who passed over five
• 11:14
Speaker 1: or six rivers many degrees broader and deeper than the
• 11:17
Speaker 1: Nile or the Ganges. And there was hardly river let
• 11:21
Speaker 1: so small as the Thames. At London Bridge, we were
• 11:25
Speaker 1: ten weeks in our journey, and I was shown in
• 11:27
Speaker 1: eighteen large towns beside many villages and private families. On
• 11:32
Speaker 1: the twenty sixth day of October, we arrived at the metropolis,
• 11:36
Speaker 1: called in their language law Berlgrud or Pride of the Universe.
• 11:40
Speaker 1: My master took a lodging in the principal street of
• 11:43
Speaker 1: the city, not far from the royal Palace, and put
• 11:46
Speaker 1: out bills in the usual form containing an exact description
• 11:50
Speaker 1: of my person and parts. He hired a large room
• 11:53
Speaker 1: between three and four hundred feet wide. He provided a
• 11:57
Speaker 1: table sixty feet in diameter upon which I was to
• 12:00
Speaker 1: act my part, and pallisdoed it round three feet from
• 12:03
Speaker 1: the edge and as many high to prevent my falling over.
• 12:07
Speaker 1: I was shown ten times a day, to the wonder
• 12:10
Speaker 1: and satisfaction of all people. I could now speak the
• 12:13
Speaker 1: language tolerably well and perfectly understood every word that was
• 12:17
Speaker 1: spoken to me. Besides, I had learnt their alphabet and
• 12:21
Speaker 1: could make a shift to explain a sentence here and there.
• 12:25
Speaker 1: For Glumdalklitch had been my instructor while we were at
• 12:27
Speaker 1: home and at leisure hours during our journey. She carried
• 12:31
Speaker 1: a little book in her pocket, not much larger than
• 12:34
Speaker 1: a Samson's atlas. It was a common treatise for the
• 12:38
Speaker 1: use of young girls, giving a short account of their religion.
• 12:41
Speaker 1: Out of this she taught me my letters and interpreted
• 12:44
Speaker 1: the words. End of Chapter two, Part two
