- 0:22SPEAKER_00: Today we're going to begin a series on making money as a writer.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: Making money is a topic that we're all interested in, of course, but how do you do it on a practical level and what are your options as a writer for making money?
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: Well, I think the answers might surprise you.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: But first, let me begin with a quick story.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: I worked as a college professor for 17 years, and during all those years, the faculty at our school were all contracted on an annual basis.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: So we never knew from year to year if we were going to get a contract for the next academic year.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: And I always hated being in that position, not knowing if I would actually be employed over the long term.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: You know, some years we wouldn't get our contracts until mid-May, and the fiscal year started in June.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: So literally it would be the middle of May, and I wouldn't know for sure if my contract was going to be renewed for the following year.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: So there was always the possibility that I could be out of a job in two weeks.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: And I realized that's a possibility in every job.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: I mean, people can be fired and they can have two weeks left, or they could be fired and they're out of a job immediately all the time.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: But this happened year after year after year, and it always really kind of made me nervous whenever the school year would finish, and I would never quite know until sometimes the last minute if I was going to have a job for the next academic year.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: So if you have a day job and you're working on writing as a side hustle, you can probably relate to this.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: Even though you might like your day job and you might feel secure, the reality is that your job could be taken away at any moment.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: There's never any true security when that security lies in somebody else's decisions.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: Or maybe you're already working as a part-time or even a full-time writer.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: If that's the case, my guess is that you'd probably like to make more money as well.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: No matter what your situation is, this series is going to give you some options for increasing your income and your different income streams as a writer.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: Now, writing is the hub of what you do, but it's just that.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: It's the hub of what you do.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: It's not the only thing that you do, or at least it's not the only thing that you should do.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: Just like the hub on a bike wheel, writing is the center of what you do, and the income streams are the different spokes that come off of that hub.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: And those spokes are actually what support the wheel of your whole financial life.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: And the more spokes you have, the more security and stability that you have.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: So in this series, we're going to dive into 10 different income streams that you can develop as a writer.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: Now, I'm not going to be able to go into a lot of detail with each one of these, but I want you to get a feel for how many different options there are for using your writing skills to create income.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: Now, these are not the only income streams you can develop.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: There's many, many more, but I just wanted to do a fairly simple and straightforward series.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: I didn't want to do, you know, the 58 income streams or the 187 income streams that you could have as a writer.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: I just wanted to do 10 really simple and straightforward ones, the ones I think that are probably most within reach the soonest for most writers.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: Now to give you a little sneak peek, here are the 10 ways to make money that we're going to talk about in this series.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: Number one, book sales.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: Number two, editing.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: Number three, coaching.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: Number four, memberships and masterminds.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: Number five, freelance writing.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: I'm losing track of what number I'm on.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: I don't have these numbered.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: Number six is speaking.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: Number seven is courses.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: Number eight is products.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: Number nine is ghostwriting, and number ten is affiliates.
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: Now it occurs to me that actually since I wrote this list, I revised the order, so they're not going to be in that exact order as I go through this series.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: Um, but those are the ten that we're going to be covering.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: Now, again, these are only the tip of the iceberg, but they are many of the most common ways that writers make money with their skills.
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: So I hope that you're looking forward to the series and considering how you can start putting some of these income streams into place in your own writing and business.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: Here's today's question.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: How motivated are you to explore new possibilities for creating income as a writer?
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: Now, let me share with you one of the ways that I make income as a writer, and that is our Daily Writer Club.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: We're going to talk about memberships and masterminds uh in a few episodes.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: And one of the ways that I make income as a writer is I run a paid membership community called the Daily Writer Club.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: You've heard me talk about this probably many times before on the podcast because I promote it a couple times a week here at the end of an episode.
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: And this is, again, simply one of the ways that I make money from my writing.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: And if you're looking for a community of enthusiastic and success-minded writers who are launching books and growing their writing businesses, the Daily Writer Club is going to be something that you definitely want to check out.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: When you're a member, you have access to weekly writing sprints and live calls with expert teaching, an active online community, access to retreats and in-person events, and best of all, a clear pathway for growing your writing platform and your business and also making money as a writer.
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: I mean, that's what we're talking about here in this series.
- 5:17SPEAKER_00: So if you'd like to be part of the Daily Writer Club, you can check it out at dailywriterclub.com.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: Thanks so much.
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: And we're going to dive into area number one book sales on tomorrow's episode.
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: I will see you then.
