Transcript
- 0:00It's most things Kenobi, an elegant podcast for a more
- 0:04civilized fandom. Hello everyone, Welcome to
- 0:20another episode of Most Things Kenobi, a podcast about Obi Wan
- 0:24Kenobi in all things Star Wars. I'm your host, Leanne.
- 0:27And I'm your host, Lauren, and we have a guest in the house, a
- 0:32very special guest, one by popular demand and somebody
- 0:37we're going to get a different perspective on Star Wars from.
- 0:40And that is my mother, Gina. Welcome to most things Kenobi
- 0:45officially. Hello.
- 0:48No, no, I take that back. Hello there.
- 0:52There you go. She's learning.
- 0:56I love it. That's amazing.
- 0:59Hi, Gina. I'm so happy to see you.
- 1:02Hello Lauren, dear. How is life?
- 1:06Pretty good. Well, she's.
- 1:08She's staying with you for a little bit.
- 1:10You got her actually in the room with you, Leanne.
- 1:13Yes. So any audio mishaps, please
- 1:16forgive us up front. We're we're doing the best we
- 1:18can with two people in one room and one across the country.
- 1:21So it's actually nice to have you here.
- 1:24She's here for a number of reasons.
- 1:26So it's nice whenever you visit. And the point of this whole
- 1:30episode is to talk about Star Wars from a new fans
- 1:35perspective. So back story, you grew up in
- 1:39the age of Star Trek. Yes.
- 1:40And you kind of skip Star Wars because you were a Trekkie and
- 1:44and look, Lauren and I have said it, we appreciate Star Trek.
- 1:48There's no hate for the Trek in this house, right?
- 1:50My dad's also big into Star Trek, so yes, there you go.
- 1:54So you got into now I was, I was big into Star Wars as a kid and
- 1:58you you like, allowed me to foster that.
- 2:00But then you got into Star Wars through The Mandalorian.
- 2:03And I know that Lauren and I have met so many people that
- 2:08started watching Star Wars and got into it for the first time
- 2:11through The Mandalorian, many of which are good friends of ours
- 2:14and patrons and just people we've met at cons and stuff.
- 2:17And so we thought it would be interesting, since you're here
- 2:21to talk to somebody who is relatively new, even though
- 2:25you're kind of an OG, you were around, you were what, a
- 2:29teenager when it came out. So now you're just picking it up
- 2:32now. So we thought it would be a
- 2:33unique opportunity kind of to to pick your brain about what it's
- 2:38like. Pick away.
- 2:40Gina, I have a question. Did you see Star Wars at all
- 2:43when it first came out, or did you just not watch it at all
- 2:46until recently? It came out, we were teenagers
- 2:52and the movie theater was like 20 miles away.
- 2:56So we loaded up the car and everybody went to the theater.
- 3:00It was our big Friday night, and we saw Star Wars, just came out
- 3:07and I thought, I like Star Trek. I'll probably like Star Wars.
- 3:12I went to the first one, the first night.
- 3:16And they all went back on Saturday, 'cause they loved it
- 3:19and I didn't. So you've seen the first one and
- 3:21you still ask me who Luke Skywalker is?
- 3:24No. Like, I know, but but I don't
- 3:28know. Like the purse.
- 3:29Like who his mother is and who his father is.
- 3:33And I didn't even really know they were sisters, brother and
- 3:37sister. Twins, right?
- 3:39Well, that came out later in the original.
- 3:41OK, I didn't over the years. A person who doesn't really keep
- 3:47an eye on Star Wars. It'll come to you.
- 3:52Advertisements and toys and oh, there's a new Star Wars coming
- 3:58out. And I'm saying to myself, isn't
- 4:01this ever going to go away? Nope, I'm not.
- 4:06They're doing another Star Wars. I didn't even like the first
- 4:10ones. What I.
- 4:12What is this? It's definitely not going away
- 4:14now. No, no, no.
- 4:17And it's a good thing it didn't because you have found your way.
- 4:20This is the way to the Mandalorian.
- 4:22This is the way. So and now I go backwards and
- 4:29try to catch up on who's who and who's married and how they died.
- 4:34And the biggest thing I've learned is that what's his name?
- 4:39You tell me. Oh, Darth Vader.
- 4:43Yeah, what's his real name? Anakin.
- 4:46Skywalker. Anakin.
- 4:48Yeah, he was. He didn't mean to be a bad guy.
- 4:51That's the beauty of it. I mean, he made every choice in
- 4:55his life and we hold him accountable for it.
- 4:58But it was a shit. He was like screwed from the
- 5:02start. He was brainwashed and that's
- 5:05that is why his redemption in Return of the Jedi, which you've
- 5:08never seen, is so important. But you were introduced to him
- 5:13now through all of this other stuff.
- 5:15You saw him in the Kenobi show as Vader, kind of wavering
- 5:19between Vader and Anakin when his helmet came off, right?
- 5:23It's too much. Cartoons, sequels, prequels.
- 5:28Hold on. We call them animations.
- 5:31We call them animations here. Faux pas.
- 5:40What do you call them? Animation, yes, not cartoon.
- 5:43Cartoon is Bugs Bunny. Animations are Clone Wars.
- 5:47Bugs Bunny's the greatest. Let's not talk about the bugs,
- 5:52OK? OK, Well, OK, so this is great
- 5:55because, like, this is your first look at him.
- 5:58Yes. You saw him as Anakin in Ahsoka.
- 6:02Yes. Yeah, that was him before the
- 6:04the helmet and the suit and everything.
- 6:06His downfall? Right.
- 6:09And how awful is that? It's terrible what they did.
- 6:13Have you seen the video of the little girl who was introduced
- 6:17to Star Wars through the prequels?
- 6:19So she knew Anakin as Anakin and didn't realize he was going to
- 6:22turn to the dark side. And she starts to cry and she's
- 6:25like, I don't want him to turn bad.
- 6:27See. It's sad.
- 6:30It is. To see it through like an
- 6:32innocent child's perspective it is.
- 6:34Yes, that's devastating. Actually that's weird to think
- 6:39of because we only know it as original trilogy than prequels
- 6:43than. Anything else?
- 6:44Yeah, we we have that weird, unique perspective of seeing it
- 6:48in the order it came out. Whereas nowadays, like Gina is a
- 6:51great example, you can see it in any order, the order.
- 6:55That's not confusing, no? She asked me.
- 6:59What did you ask me the other day?
- 7:01You said you asked me, she asked me some Star Wars question and I
- 7:04said, well, what timeline are we talking about?
- 7:06And she's like, what timeline? I said, well, that's key because
- 7:09there's like 50 timelines at this point, you know?
- 7:12A lot to keep track of, yeah. Yeah.
- 7:15In Star Trek, you never felt bad for the bad guy.
- 7:20He was bad. We destroyed him, and that was
- 7:23it, and that was it. But now here comes this guy who
- 7:27didn't mean to be bad and and they they shit on him and all
- 7:31that stuff. Well, he was led down a path
- 7:34where he thought he was going to save people by the decision he
- 7:37made and it was like the exact opposite.
- 7:39And he hated himself every day. That's a dirty trick.
- 7:42That's a damn dirty trick. Yeah, but it's the story of
- 7:46hope, and that everyone has the chance to turn good again.
- 7:49And you should believe in people you love.
- 7:51That's why Luke's story is so important.
- 7:54And you know, given the chance, you can turn it around never too
- 7:58late. I'm going to say something
- 8:00really controversial right here, OK?
- 8:04Shocking and against the grain, but Luke Skywalker needs to get
- 8:10over himself. What?
- 8:14Blasphemy. Why?
- 8:16You don't even know who he is. Luke.
- 8:19Luke. Yes, that's all you hear is Luke
- 8:22is so great and Luke is so wonderful and Luke is so this
- 8:26and Luke is so that. That's because he is same as New
- 8:28York City. All you hear about is New York
- 8:35City. NY City is so great.
- 8:37What happened when we flew in there, there was not the city,
- 8:41the airport. There was garbage all over.
- 8:43They changed gates 10 times. They didn't have it together at
- 8:47all. And I told that girl at the
- 8:48gate, So hold on, we're comparing Luke Skywalker to the
- 8:53LaGuardia Airport. Yes, and all things that need to
- 8:58get over themselves that think they're great.
- 9:01That's that's why you need to watch the movies, because.
- 9:04Luke doesn't. He's great.
- 9:06He doesn't think he's great. He doesn't think he's.
- 9:09Great. The audience thinks he's great,
- 9:10but Luke doesn't think he's great.
- 9:13Luke I was glad to see him when he flew in there and saved Mando
- 9:18and. And those black things that were
- 9:21pounding on the door, Yeah, he he yeah.
- 9:23And he did it because people needed help.
- 9:26Isn't that who you want on your side?
- 9:28That's who I want to see. That was he never?
- 9:30He never. Then he took baby Yoda, and then
- 9:33it was a whole thing with the mask off and the whole helmet
- 9:37came off and it was sad. And if you didn't cry, you don't
- 9:40have a heart. But baby Yoda wanted to go.
- 9:45He called. Luke got burping.
- 9:46He called Luke. So, so here's an example of the
- 9:50point of view of someone who comes into Star Wars late and
- 9:53does not catch the drift of the first three.
- 9:56But the truth is, Gene is not alone.
- 9:58There's a huge part of the Star Wars community that can't stand
- 10:01Luke Breaks my heart, but it's it's not an uncommon idea.
- 10:06The thing is is Lauren and I were just talking about how in
- 10:10these newer TV shows like Ahsoka for instance, and even Andor,
- 10:16even though Andor was kind of different, there is no mention
- 10:19of Luke and her. And I were just talking about
- 10:23how tangentially these shows we should hear more about the the
- 10:29boy who blew up two Death Stars. For for all we know, like Lauren
- 10:34posted something on the Instagram, Luke walked into the
- 10:38room with the Emperor and Vader and he was the only one that
- 10:42walked out alive. So something badass happened in
- 10:48there that would put the fear of people.
- 10:50Like what did what is it about this guy, this young man who was
- 10:55able to defeat Palpatine, slash Sidious, who?
- 10:59No one else in the Galaxy, full armies, other Jedi, etcetera.
- 11:03And really the answer is Vader helped him because of the love
- 11:08he had for his own son. So together they were able to
- 11:11kind of catch Palpatine off guard.
- 11:13But nobody acknowledges that in the new shows, we don't hear
- 11:17about Luke, ever. When he just shows up in the
- 11:20Mandalorian saves everyone. He didn't ask for a thank you.
- 11:24He no one owed him anything. He came and took the kid because
- 11:28the kid called him. Someone needed help.
- 11:30Luke went and saved him. That's what Luke is in his
- 11:33essence. It's the label that people
- 11:35attach to Luke, whether they like him or not.
- 11:37Oh, he's whiny. He didn't have enough training,
- 11:40you know. Why isn't he saving everyone?
- 11:42Why is he only swoop in whenever he wants?
- 11:43Stuff like that? So there are two schools, right?
- 11:47Yeah, he yeah, he is pretty great.
- 11:51Well, we didn't mean to persuade you.
- 11:52It's just he did a lot of good things, but he never once asked
- 11:57number one to be forced to do any of that.
- 11:59He didn't ask. He took it upon himself.
- 12:01Like the hero's journey. Right.
- 12:04It was basically destiny chose him.
- 12:06He didn't choose it. He even refuses.
- 12:08Like that's the whole thing of the hero's journey is the hero
- 12:10refuses the call at 1st and they say I can't do that.
- 12:14I have a family, I have a life here and that's what happens.
- 12:17And so something external like the Empire coming and murdering
- 12:21your family removes your obstacle and now you have no
- 12:23choice but to follow your destiny.
- 12:25That's basically what happened with Lou, but he didn't choose
- 12:28it. He knew he wanted something
- 12:30bigger, but it was basically thrust upon him.
- 12:32George Lucas was kind of like playing with the idea of an the
- 12:35extended universe that goes beyond Return of the Jedi is
- 12:39that Luke was carrying a huge burden.
- 12:41And he kind of secluded himself on occasion because it was a lot
- 12:45of scrutiny on somebody who was just trying to help.
- 12:50And we're seeing that kind of in the Ahsoka show.
- 12:53Where like Hera is a great example, she's trying to do the
- 12:55right thing, but now there are these processes you have to go
- 12:58through and you have to get approval.
- 12:59And so people suddenly turn you into the bad guy wants alliances
- 13:04or allegiances, you know, kind of switch.
- 13:06And now the Republic is in charge and not the Empire
- 13:09anymore. And then the same wheel just
- 13:11keeps turning. Bad guy's form, good guy's form
- 13:16and in walks the next person to try and rule and starts all over
- 13:21again. So Gina, is all of this, just,
- 13:23like, way too complicated to enjoy from your perspective?
- 13:29It is, but I have Leanne, so I'll watch a clip on YouTube or
- 13:38somewhere. And now that I watched them,
- 13:40they throw up. All these other new things that
- 13:44are new to me, right? So I watched them and then I had
- 13:47to ask her questions. You've asked me a lot of
- 13:51questions about Yoda, right? Like actual Yoda, not Baby Yoda.
- 13:54But being introduced to Baby Yoda made you have questions
- 13:57about like, so like what was, what was Yoda like?
- 13:59And so I sent her the clips from the prequels of him fighting
- 14:02Sidious. And it's like this is what a
- 14:05full grown whatever species they are, can do with the proper
- 14:09training. I asked her the other day.
- 14:12Now I ask you, Lauren, if Grogu is to be a Mandalorian, are they
- 14:20going to make his helmet with room for his ears?
- 14:25I think they'll put holes in it. Doesn't.
- 14:28I would say he needs to protect his ears, so either the helmet
- 14:31has to be shaped like his ears, which I don't know how he would
- 14:34get that helmet on. Wouldn't that be cute?
- 14:36Now come on. Even better, the ears have to
- 14:40stick through, like they have to bake holes for the ears, which
- 14:43would also be cute it. Wouldn't be.
- 14:45Well, they would have to be metal too, yeah, because if he
- 14:49gets a singe from a blaster off one of his ears, that's going to
- 14:52hurt. Yeah, that's really what got her
- 14:54into Star Wars was baby Yoda. And you like you like Mando
- 14:57himself too. You really like their bond.
- 15:01Mando is like, boy, if I was a bad ass, that's what I would
- 15:06look like. If I was a badass, I would have
- 15:09those flamethrowers. Oh, the wrist with the.
- 15:12Writer And that jet pack and that big long rifle.
- 15:17Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. He has a lot of tricks up his
- 15:20sleeve. Mandalorians have the bet.
- 15:22They're the best outfitted warriors in the Galaxy, fighting
- 15:25everywhere. Let's.
- 15:26Talk about the case. Oh, I love a good Cape.
- 15:28I love a Cape. When he walks like that and you
- 15:32just see that Cape fluttering in the back, yeah, Darth Vader has
- 15:35his own fan. Space fan.
- 15:39I'm just kidding. He's like.
- 15:41Blows the, blows the Cape out behind, yeah.
- 15:46Didn't think it's hot out there. No, he does get hot under there.
- 15:49It's all wires. Ask me another one.
- 15:54Ask me another one. Do you like how Mando is
- 16:00softening with Baby Yoda, or do you like he's becoming like I'm
- 16:04going to settle down with a plantation?
- 16:07Or do you want him to still be badass, training Baby Yoda to be
- 16:11a warrior? Both.
- 16:13They can sit on their porch and in the evening and catch frogs
- 16:19and read books and stuff. What?
- 16:21I don't know what they do. He can clean his gun.
- 16:24Yeah, yeah, yeah. Clean the blaster.
- 16:30And when they don't have anything else to do, he can take
- 16:33them over there and practice. I wish Mando knew more about it.
- 16:40He should do his homework. Well, the Jedi are kind of
- 16:43mysterious creatures, so he didn't even know who Luke was
- 16:46when Luke showed up. OK, so it's a big Galaxy.
- 16:49And he was a foundling. So he was an orphan, Abandoned.
- 16:53So isn't that's part of it too, If you have ever not been
- 16:58wanted, you know what that feels like.
- 17:02And it's awful. So the fact that he recognizes
- 17:07that someone stepped in and helped him, he's going to help
- 17:10this little kid now because of that.
- 17:14That's great. That's great.
- 17:16That's a great thing. I always thought he was a kind
- 17:19hearted man for that, because he was kind of like you said, he
- 17:23wasn't one. He was an outcast and the
- 17:24Mandalorians adopted him, saved him from a terrible situation.
- 17:28And then he did the same thing for for Grogu.
- 17:31So are the Mandalorians kind and generous people?
- 17:36I would not say so. That's what I was just thinking
- 17:40while you guys were talking. I was thinking when Leanne, you
- 17:43said he has a kind and sweetheart, it's like, yeah, but
- 17:45I think he was taken by people who did not foster that they
- 17:49actually strip that part of you away because it's weakness.
- 17:54Yeah, you give what you didn't get.
- 17:57There you go. Yeah, Yeah.
- 17:59That's so true. It it heals the giver if you
- 18:05give what you didn't get, that's actually called something.
- 18:08What I don't remember what it's a thing though.
- 18:11It's in like meditation. It's.
- 18:14I thought I just made it up. The wounded healer.
- 18:17That's it. It's the wounded healer.
- 18:19Without the wound, you can't then heal the wound that was
- 18:22given to you and others. So it's what was missing that
- 18:26wounded you. You're you're able to recognize
- 18:29that and then heal someone else. So it's you're closing a
- 18:32circuit, Kind of. So what What was missing for
- 18:36Mando? He was able to give to Grogu.
- 18:38So it's the wounded healer thing.
- 18:40And you know better than anyone what you didn't get, What you
- 18:45needed that you didn't get. Yeah, so then you It's easy to
- 18:49recognize in something else. Let me ask you a question based
- 18:53on Mandalorians. How do you feel about Bo Catan?
- 18:57She's another Mandalorian that you've you're you're not very
- 19:00familiar with Mandalorians, so here she comes, a female
- 19:03Mandalorian who's been around. She's one of the.
- 19:06We'll see the founding man because her sister Obi Wan's
- 19:11girlfriend and Duchess of Mandalore.
- 19:13See, you don't have to go that why 7 generations?
- 19:16Because I can't keep up anyway, that's the best part of all of
- 19:20this I like. Her.
- 19:22OK. When I first met her, I said
- 19:25What does she do? Sit on that thing on rocks all
- 19:28day. She has things to think about.
- 19:30That's what I said too. Every time I visit her, she's
- 19:34just sitting there like, well, The thing is, is that she, she
- 19:38had a hand in the killing of her sister, in the death of her
- 19:41sister, so that's a lot to shoulder.
- 19:44Well, that makes you want to sit on your throne all day.
- 19:47I don't. But that's why I think it's
- 19:48interesting because like your mom doesn't have all that back
- 19:51story. That's that's why I want.
- 19:52To go. So when you first met Boca Tan,
- 19:55how did you feel about her? Because we have really specific
- 19:59feelings because of what we know about her past.
- 20:01But you were just meeting her in Mando, so?
- 20:05I think she was pissed off or Moody and didn't do anything all
- 20:13day but sit on that thing, whatever that is.
- 20:17After she's pissed off and everything, how did you feel
- 20:19about her? Because she she went on to take
- 20:20her helmet off and all this stuff.
- 20:22Uniting the clans and everything.
- 20:24Yes, the clans uniting for it. You like her?
- 20:28OK, but I wanted to ask some people Mandalorians have that
- 20:33like little antenna eye thing. What is that?
- 20:36It's like a little camera thingy.
- 20:38Yeah, I think it like improves their vision and when they pop
- 20:41it down in front of their eye, right?
- 20:43Yeah. Why don't they all have it?
- 20:45I. Don't know.
- 20:48I think they can customize, so maybe it's just the people who
- 20:50want it have it. Boba Fett has it.
- 20:54You didn't watch Boba Fett, did you?
- 20:55Just the parts where Groga was in it.
- 20:58I don't think I watched any of that.
- 20:59No, you saw the episodes with with Grogue 'cause he he
- 21:02silenced that giant monster which is a a a rancor, and he
- 21:06put it to sleep, remember? And then a tired amount.
- 21:09Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. I didn't see that.
- 21:11What? What did you call it?
- 21:12Mando 2 Point O Leanne. Yeah, Mando 2 point OI like the
- 21:17giant Polly logs that they ride. Oh, the those weird domesticated
- 21:24animals that I have spoken. Remember that guy?
- 21:27I have spoken, Oh. Yeah, the rounded.
- 21:29The rounded things. I didn't know that's what they
- 21:31were called. Well, I don't think they are.
- 21:33She thinks they look like pollywogs, which are those
- 21:35little pre frog. They look like sperm.
- 21:41Nobody knows what a pollywog. Is maybe not, but they know what
- 21:44a sperm is. Same shape.
- 21:48I mean, like a tadpole, Yeah. Yeah.
- 21:51Well, a. Tadpole yeah is a pollywog.
- 21:53Pollywog is like local dialect maybe?
- 21:57I want. To Google this now.
- 21:59Yeah, go ahead, Polly. Walk Polly.
- 22:03Wally Doodle all the day. It's not like a colloquialism.
- 22:14It's like a thing. Yeah, yeah, it's basically a
- 22:17tadpole. This is the same thing how I've
- 22:20learned something new today. Stick with me, kid.
- 22:25Oh, so did how did you feel about the Kenobi show?
- 22:32You gave some thoughts on that when you were on our 100th
- 22:36episode about what you thought about old Ben Kenobi, our friend
- 22:41Obi Wan. I still feel really bad.
- 22:45He's a sad man and now I know a little more about why he's so
- 22:51sad. There's a lot.
- 22:53He went through some shit, yeah. But it's how you come out the
- 22:57other end, right? That's why we like him.
- 23:00Yeah, he never let it corrupt him and make him bitter, which
- 23:04is hard. Most people would have trouble
- 23:06not becoming bitter from all all the horrible stuff, right?
- 23:10I've become bitter after stuff that happens, you eventually
- 23:14climb out of it, But I don't think he's ever wavered, ever.
- 23:20And he's an example for everyone which.
- 23:23I don't think there's a single person out there who doesn't
- 23:25admire Obi Wan Kenobi. Like him or not, favorite Jedi
- 23:29or not, doesn't matter. Everyone admires him.
- 23:31Why isn't he the greatest Jedi? Well.
- 23:34We never said he wasn't some people.
- 23:36Do think he is. Yeah, some people think he is
- 23:39there. That's a running debate.
- 23:41Let's do a poll, OK? We'll poll our audience and our
- 23:46patrons, and we'll see who's you think is the greatest Jedi of
- 23:50the ones that you know, yeah. Who, Amanda?
- 23:57Not Mando. That Mandalorian is the greatest
- 24:01Jedi ever. Whoops.
- 24:05That was a bad one. Well.
- 24:06After after the Ahsoka show, I mean, Obi Wan is the best Jedi.
- 24:11Why didn't he come and help? He was dead.
- 24:16Because he's dead. Because what?
- 24:19He's dead, Mother. He's dead.
- 24:21He's dead. He died.
- 24:22And isn't Luke dead? No.
- 24:25He. Well, unless isn't that the only
- 24:28episode she's seen or the sequels is once Luke is dead?
- 24:33I mean yes, but. I mean, they all are dead at
- 24:36some point. I mean, technically they're all
- 24:39they've all passed on, but Obi Wan dies.
- 24:43In the very first movie ever, the one that you saw in the
- 24:47theater and have forgotten, he dies.
- 24:49He sacrifices himself to save Leia and Luke.
- 24:53It was all part of his plan. Well, that just shocked me and
- 24:56blew me away. So how did he come back and save
- 24:59them? Who?
- 25:01Luke. Luke didn't die.
- 25:03Obi Wan did. Oh.
- 25:07You have to watch these fucking original trilogy movies.
- 25:10Please, for the love of God, will you just put the time in?
- 25:16It's too. It's too complicated.
- 25:18Now that's the thing, everyone A lot of people complain and I
- 25:23agree, like we're lucky because we kind of been watching as we
- 25:26go. But people who are just new to
- 25:29the fandom, it is. There are too many plot lines.
- 25:33Too many directions, too many points of contact.
- 25:35It is overwhelming and it's for some people it's not worth the
- 25:41investment it takes. Because it is an investment of
- 25:43time and emotional energy. Because it's.
- 25:47So much. And Lauren and I have talked.
- 25:49We don't even we haven't even scraped the surface of written
- 25:55Star Wars media like published books, novels, comics.
- 26:01Where the story continues with details and characters that I
- 26:06mean it is an absolute investment, so.
- 26:10Yeah. There's nothing wrong with the
- 26:11way you've been digesting it, but there are there are big gaps
- 26:14you're missing, like Obi Wan dying.
- 26:17Luke is still alive in Mandalorian in your timeline.
- 26:21Oh, well, sorry. Oh no it's not.
- 26:26They all come back as Force ghosts anyway, so they're never
- 26:28really gone. Luke taught us that.
- 26:30Yeah, Force Ghost. OK, ask me another one.
- 26:36Do you have any more, Lauren? You don't have any more.
- 26:39I do. I was wondering what you love
- 26:42about Star Wars. Since you're new to it and it's
- 26:46overwhelming. Why do you like it?
- 26:48Then what is it that's keeping you interested?
- 26:51Because it's new? I don't know anything about
- 26:56those people at the bar. You know, like if someone goes
- 27:00into a bar to talk or whatever, there's people or creatures or
- 27:06whatever. They are all there.
- 27:08I like that no matter what they look like, they're all accepted.
- 27:13Like all all these different planet people can get along when
- 27:18people can't get along with their neighbor.
- 27:21On this planet, yes. Yeah, I like that.
- 27:25But you guys would know that's a, that's a so and so from the
- 27:32planet so and so. When Zeb showed up at the bar in
- 27:38one of those scenes, remember, and he was just there.
- 27:41And to and to the people who knew.
- 27:43We knew it was Zeb from Rebels, but you just knew he was a
- 27:47creature that was friendly and had a momentary right dialogue
- 27:51moment, you know? And the guy who saved you,
- 27:54Grogu, and took him in the elevator.
- 27:57Grogu's little memory of the when they broke into the palace,
- 28:02or whatever it was, oh, during. Order 66 when they when he was
- 28:06when he our boy. Yeah, was on my best.
- 28:10On my best, yeah. And he saved and said come on,
- 28:13I'm. Yeah, with me, Yes, that was.
- 28:15Now see, to me that was just, oh wow, that's great That guy
- 28:20saved. Got him out of there.
- 28:21But you knew who that guy was because he was in something
- 28:25before and it was good to see him come back back.
- 28:30See, that's the spirit of Star Wars.
- 28:33To save, to protect, to make better while all of this other
- 28:38terrible destruction is going on.
- 28:41It is the classic story of good versus evil, but it there's so
- 28:46many nuances to it. Like you referenced Star Trek,
- 28:50bad guys were bad, good guys were good.
- 28:52But in Star Wars there's like. Are they?
- 28:55Are they always? Yeah, something you were saying,
- 28:58Gina, really reminds me of Star Trek actually, about how Star
- 29:03Trek was ground breaking at the time because they had a
- 29:06multiracial cast and that was like unheard of.
- 29:11It in, what was it the 60s or 70s?
- 29:13I can never remember. Yeah, both, I think.
- 29:16Yeah, and it was on for. Just a short amount of time.
- 29:20But in that amount of time it was a very deliberate choice by
- 29:23the show creators to make it diverse and talk about peace and
- 29:29acceptance, because that wasn't happening in the world that they
- 29:33lived in on planet Earth here for real.
- 29:36That to me is one of the beautiful things that are
- 29:39similar to Star Wars, where it's like there's so many things that
- 29:42are quote, UN quote, different. But it's a good way to teach
- 29:46children, even from an early age, that all variety is a
- 29:49beautiful thing. And yeah, I really love that
- 29:53about Star Trek. And I'm not a Trekkie, but I do
- 29:56love that I have so much respect for that show.
- 29:58Totally. Yep.
- 29:59I agree. And Star Wars, because I haven't
- 30:02never seen creatures. She was asking me recently what
- 30:06is Ahsoka species and I said Togruta.
- 30:08And then I showed you pictures of, like you know, from the
- 30:12Clone Wars series. How the males look and sometimes
- 30:17the females have longer montrails, they curve inward or
- 30:21outward. The male have different colors
- 30:23their their facial markings are different.
- 30:26So even within a species there there's variances of like even
- 30:31twilaks. They come in all colors.
- 30:34The ones with the two. What Hera is well, it just goes
- 30:38to show you that a race of something doesn't all look the
- 30:41same. Exactly.
- 30:43And and what's funny is this Twilac females are often used as
- 30:46like sex slaves and sexual objects of desire.
- 30:51And Hera is a self-made woman pilot, probably the best in the
- 30:58Galaxy, arguably, and. Is a mother and a rebel and a a
- 31:04leader, and she's like all of the above.
- 31:06So she broke out of her own stereotype that is common within
- 31:10her species. And that's why she's amazing on
- 31:13top of so many other reasons. But Star Wars gives you that
- 31:18there are the same exact problems that we face here in
- 31:23that Galaxy, but how many different ways of overcoming it?
- 31:26It's endless, I agree. And I think when you can see
- 31:30something like that. In a story, it gives you hope,
- 31:35you know within the story, and then that can also give you hope
- 31:38in your real life. And that's the power of
- 31:41representation. Yes, a lot of Star Wars is about
- 31:47identity. Luke was lost.
- 31:50He didn't know his identity, especially after Vader said.
- 31:54Well, turns out I'm your dad and he's like, what the fuck?
- 31:59That like, ruined everything for him.
- 32:00It ruined everything for for Leia for a very long time.
- 32:03So to overcome that, I mean a lot of it's about identity.
- 32:06Ahsoka's identity, personal identity.
- 32:08Is she good? Is she bad?
- 32:10Did she cause the downfall? Did she not have because she was
- 32:13part of not like she chose it. But you know, everyone's choices
- 32:17have outcomes and and when she left the Jedi Order, she left
- 32:21Anakin and that made the hole in him that was filled with anger
- 32:26grow. And so she blamed herself for a
- 32:28lot of, like, abandoning him. And abandonment was a big
- 32:31problem with Anakin. So, you know, so identity is a
- 32:36big thing in. So what's the most frustrating
- 32:40part about Star Wars for you? I'm not in frustrated.
- 32:44I'm enjoying it. Oh good, good.
- 32:46Yes, The first of Grogu baby Yoda was worrying about him.
- 32:53What's going to happen if they get him?
- 32:57Your maternal instinct? Yes, yes.
- 32:59A a baby. Anything.
- 33:02If it's a baby, it might need me.
- 33:09But he's got a good Papa now. They're a clan of two.
- 33:12They're a clan of two, yes. What are you most excited for
- 33:17next? I heard that they're not going
- 33:21to make a sees next season. They're going to make a movie.
- 33:26There's rumors that The Mandalorian yeah, it's going to
- 33:30be a full length feature film. Now it's a rumor.
- 33:34It's a rumor. It's a rumor.
- 33:36Well, what the the writers strike and everything.
- 33:38I think there's going to be a lot of kerfuffle before it gets
- 33:41ironed out. Tell us one of your favorite
- 33:44moments ever that you've witnessed on television screen
- 33:48of Star Wars when Luke came and saved.
- 33:51Yeah, yeah. But those black things were
- 33:54pounding on the door and they there was nothing they could do.
- 33:59And they were all in there and and like somebody came and yeah,
- 34:03like you guys knew who it was. Oh.
- 34:06My God, I was crying. Derek was crying.
- 34:08We were all crying. It was a very big cry because I
- 34:12didn't know who it was, but. It didn't matter.
- 34:14It still made it super exciting. And dramatic and awesome you
- 34:18like. When baby Yoda eats the eggs,
- 34:20this woman is trying to save her species.
- 34:22She's carrying the last 17 frog eggs on her back in a cooler,
- 34:26and baby Yoda has the balls to eat one.
- 34:29He's bad. He didn't know.
- 34:31He didn't mean he didn't know. He's just a child.
- 34:35He always likes to eat cookies and steal a little and he and
- 34:38anything he can. Eat anything?
- 34:40Really. I just said to her, I can't
- 34:42believe somebody didn't come out with those little blue cookies.
- 34:46I thought that would for sure be in a grocery store.
- 34:51I'll be at Disney next week, so I'll let you know if it's been
- 34:55marketing it. They look like whoopie pies,
- 34:57kind of they. Do.
- 34:58But they do like little macaroons, Marks, Capone or
- 35:02macarons. No, not macarons.
- 35:05Yeah, maybe macarons, yeah. Marks Capone cheese is something
- 35:08you put inside. So I was close.
- 35:11Who's your most hated character that you've seen so far in Star
- 35:14Wars? Oh, Moff, Gideon is.
- 35:18That his name. Is that his name?
- 35:21Yeah, he was on Breaking Bad and you'd like to.
- 35:22He was on Breaking Bad. He's such a best, worst.
- 35:28But he's pretty cool. He's pretty cool with his fan
- 35:29base. What's his actor's name?
- 35:32Jim. Carlo.
- 35:33Carlo. Oh, that's it.
- 35:34Esposito. Yeah.
- 35:36Giancarlo Esposito. Is that it?
- 35:38He's really cool with this fan base.
- 35:39People give him names. People give him helmets.
- 35:42He puts them on. He signs them.
- 35:44Oh, no, I know. No, no.
- 35:48Listen, if you're going to do like kidnap innocent things like
- 35:54Grogu and take their blood and everything, you see me on the
- 35:58streets, Sir. What you going to do?
- 36:01Drop, kick, em. Well, we'll know when we get
- 36:05there. But he's a really good, bad guy.
- 36:10He You have to separate the actor from the the the
- 36:13character. But the fact that I can't tells.
- 36:16Me What? He's a really good actor.
- 36:17He. Is that's true?
- 36:18He is so good in Breaking Bad also, and he's in Better Call
- 36:23Saul. He's so good.
- 36:25Yeah. Oh, we loved Better Call Saul.
- 36:27That was a good. That was a good show.
- 36:29He's a good bad guy, too. He's a good bad.
- 36:32He wears a good Cape. He can pull a good Cape.
- 36:35His first like him arriving on the TIE fighter with the Cape
- 36:39art, yeah. You have to have an excellent
- 36:42kit. You have never seen Rogue One,
- 36:44but you need to. You would love Rogue One.
- 36:47You would love Rogue One. Maybe we'll watch that together.
- 36:50Is it animated? No, but there is a lot of good
- 36:54Cape. There is good.
- 36:55Cape Good Cape. There's a lot Cape is hard to
- 36:59find. There's a cheery.
- 37:05There's chronic. Yes, chronic.
- 37:08Vader Chronic's. There's ponchos.
- 37:12We were just talking about ponchos today.
- 37:14There's a lot of poncho you would love.
- 37:16Cheer it. I bet you any money who cheer it
- 37:19in in way. Is that how you pronounce this?
- 37:22Cheer it in way. He's a he's a character you
- 37:25would really like and we love him.
- 37:27I adore him, yeah. I am one with the Force.
- 37:30The Force is with me. Say it.
- 37:32I am one. I am one with the force, and the
- 37:34force is with me. That's there it is.
- 37:37Always. Always, yes.
- 37:42And the Anzelins, yes. We can't not talk about the
- 37:45Anzelins. Yes, you fell in love with the
- 37:48Anzelins on The Mandalorian. Now that's just a little thing
- 37:53they put in there that brings little kids in.
- 37:58It brings you watch because you might want to see them again.
- 38:02Are they going to be in this episode?
- 38:04Yeah, they're sassy. We like.
- 38:06What do you want? We're busy.
- 38:09We're trying to fix things. You come to my door and listen
- 38:15anybody who says what do you want?
- 38:17Yeah, he's busy, is my kind of neighbor.
- 38:22And they all cheered at the end when when they were saved and
- 38:25came in and saved season. What was the season three?
- 38:28Are we on the third season of Mandalorian?
- 38:30I think so, yeah. Oh my.
- 38:32And we can't forget Salacious Crumb.
- 38:36I see. I love the little creatures.
- 38:40She watched a bunch of clips, which there's not many because
- 38:43he's not in Star Wars for very long.
- 38:45But you watched a bunch of clips of Salacious and you're like, Oh
- 38:47my goodness, what are those called?
- 38:49Yeah. And the the trees are full of
- 38:51them in that one in the. Mandalorian, There was a.
- 38:53That's. Right.
- 38:54There's also, well, they're what are they, relatives of Salacious
- 38:59and Clone Wars? There's the other.
- 39:02The one that Hondo has, maybe they're.
- 39:04Not the monkey lizard that Hondo has.
- 39:06Yeah, it's a Dick cousin. He's like blue and purple or
- 39:09something, right? Yeah, colored green and blue.
- 39:12There's like muck, muck or something.
- 39:14It's one of them. And then there's.
- 39:17I. Can't remember the other.
- 39:18One I will. Voiced by Matt Lanter.
- 39:21Yeah, voiced by Matt Lanter, who also voices Anakin Skywalker.
- 39:24So it's like he plays a rodent and like a galactic, and I met
- 39:31James Arnold Taylor through all this.
- 39:34And you love him. We all love him.
- 39:36He's very talented, yeah. Yes, yeah.
- 39:40He's so talented and nice. He's just.
- 39:43Very. Nicest person ever.
- 39:46I see your autograph. Leanne behind you here?
- 39:48No. Isn't it wonderful?
- 39:51I I need a frame for it. I don't have one yet.
- 39:53I just bought a frame for mine just the other day.
- 39:56OK, before we let you go, and thank you for being on the show
- 39:59and answering all of our crazy questions and giving us your
- 40:01opinion on things with Halloween next week, we're doing a spooky
- 40:06Halloween Star Wars Episode. If you could go as any Star Wars
- 40:10character for Halloween, who would you dress up and be?
- 40:13Take a guess. An Anzalin.
- 40:18Mando. Yeah, Mando.
- 40:22You'd be Mando Mask. I would take that thing down off
- 40:26the wall. I have a Mando mask in my game
- 40:28room here all you would need is like a black Cape Cape.
- 40:35I have one and put that on. OK, you can walk around and I
- 40:38don't care. That's fine.
- 40:39I. Was going to say while the
- 40:40inside of town you just walk around with that Cape and that
- 40:42helmet all week. That's it.
- 40:44I'm going to carve my pumpkin like that.
- 40:47Oh, that's awesome. That's a good idea.
- 40:49There you go. You don't want to have to get
- 40:50the eyes straight or. Anything.
- 40:52No. Nothing.
- 40:52You wanted nothing. You don't even have to carve
- 40:54your pumpkin. Just put the mask on it.
- 40:56This is the way, right? That's cute.
- 41:03That's cute. OK, listeners, we have a
- 41:11question for you. What was it that got you into
- 41:15Star Wars and what is it that you love that's keeping you into
- 41:19Star Wars? If you're new to the fandom,
- 41:21we've been here a long time. Yes.
- 41:24And we got in through the OT. So if you're new to the fandom,
- 41:28we're curious what is bringing you in?
- 41:30What is the new thing? That's catching your attention.
- 41:34And why do you stay? And next week it's MTK Tuesday
- 41:39on Halloween. So we thought we've never done
- 41:42this before because it never really quite lined up.
- 41:45But we thought we would talk about all of the weird, spooky,
- 41:50witchy, spellboundy kind of things that are the elements in
- 41:54Star Wars that we could Halloweenify.
- 41:57They're just spooky elements. We got zombies.
- 41:59We got witches. We got ghosts.
- 42:02So join us next week. We will talk about all of the
- 42:05Halloween things, spooky things, which is ghosts, et cetera in
- 42:09the Clone Wars that we can think of and we'll Halloween Ify it
- 42:12for you on Halloween itself. So join us.
- 42:17All right, so last week we asked everybody what their favorite
- 42:20snarky Obi Wan moments were from The Clone Wars, and we got a lot
- 42:24of responses. Yes, because there's a lot of
- 42:26snarky comments. One of my favorite responses was
- 42:29from James Donald Taylor himself.
- 42:31Yes. He said.
- 42:32I have a good feeling about this.
- 42:35That's, that's that's excellent. Thank you, James.
- 42:38He would know, right? Yeah, right.
- 42:41So just a few from our Instagram.
- 42:44Mary Ann Chaz says Season seven Episode 2.
- 42:47I hope you at least told Padme I said hello.
- 42:51Yeah, that's a good one. That's a real good one.
- 42:54Good nighty Southwest, said Obi Wan to Anakin.
- 42:58At least you're a master at getting caught.
- 43:01That's that. I thought of that one.
- 43:03I I did think of that one when we were when I was going through
- 43:06the episodes and I I I heard that one.
- 43:08I watched that scene. I was like, that's a good one.
- 43:10Yep. And so be 1 Shady, yeah.
- 43:14Oh, I know. Goldie on Spotify said I love
- 43:23all of the ones you said, and I can't choose from the Mandalore
- 43:26arc. Two of my many faves is Shall we
- 43:29discuss your surrender again, which I thought of after he.
- 43:34Catches that lightsaber, yes, and ignites it.
- 43:37That's a good one. And then you haven't really
- 43:40impressed me today, which is classic Obi Wan.
- 43:43Classic. Well, that's a good one.
- 43:45I'm going to use that one. There you go.
- 43:47So thank you to all the folks who gave us comments.
