- 1:05Speaker 7: I'm so excited so tonight. I don't know if you
- 1:09Speaker 7: guys have heard a buzz in the air here in Charleston,
- 1:11Speaker 7: and it's not the regatta Wheregatta is coming on this
- 1:14Speaker 7: coming Friday, the TBT will be returning to the Charleston
- 1:17Speaker 7: Coliseum and Convention Center. For those of you that don't
- 1:20Speaker 7: know in our audience. The TBT is an acronym for
- 1:23Speaker 7: the Basketball Tournament. It's a unique type of single elimination
- 1:28Speaker 7: format in basketball. It came into fruition in twenty fourteen
- 1:32Speaker 7: and there are approximately sixty four teams competing for a
- 1:35Speaker 7: one thousand dollars prize. And tonight we are lucky enough
- 1:39Speaker 7: to have two of the head coaches that are affiliated
- 1:44Speaker 7: with the Mountain State and Marshall University's alumni team which
- 1:47Speaker 7: has heard that, and Best Virginia, which is going to
- 1:50Speaker 7: be later. But I'm going to introduce our first guests,
- 1:53Speaker 7: and that is Aunt Elmore. Welcome ot to the podcast.
- 1:57Speaker 8: Oh thanks for having me. I'm glad to be on.
- 2:00Speaker 6: Oh so glad to have you.
- 2:00Speaker 7: So I'm going to give our audience a little bit
- 2:03Speaker 7: of history for you out So audist from Charleston, West Virginia.
- 2:07Speaker 7: He is he is, you know, part of basketball royalty.
- 2:11Speaker 7: We could say he's the son of Jay Elmore and
- 2:14Speaker 7: brother of John and he uh was a former guard
- 2:18Speaker 7: at Marshall University from the years twenty sixteen through twenty eighteen.
- 2:23Speaker 7: He is also now serving as the GM and head
- 2:27Speaker 7: coach of TBT tournaments.
- 2:29Speaker 6: Heard that, so I want to ask the first question, Carl.
- 2:35Speaker 3: Well, then I can go on, I can.
- 2:36Speaker 6: Go on, I can just steal the show.
- 2:39Speaker 3: I'm gonna let you got to run it here a
- 2:40Speaker 3: little bit.
- 2:41Speaker 5: But you know, my my question is like when you
- 2:46Speaker 5: when you when you're sitting and you're thinking about and
- 2:48Speaker 5: you're hearing someone at let's say, introduce you. The history
- 2:54Speaker 5: of the Elmoares in basketball is really an amazing thing.
- 3:00Speaker 5: And again I hate to say this, but it's probably
- 3:03Speaker 5: something that has not been talked about enough.
- 3:07Speaker 3: But what does that feel like.
- 3:09Speaker 5: When you hear that introduction and you realize what a
- 3:14Speaker 5: legacy that you guys have had.
- 3:18Speaker 8: I'm really just blessed. You know, one person that you
- 3:21Speaker 8: all forgot to mention as my grandfather who was the
- 3:23Speaker 8: first team All state yeah wall player at Stonewall Jacks
- 3:27Speaker 8: and then a scholarship player at West Virginia University, you know,
- 3:31Speaker 8: following up Jerry West. So from my grandfathers and my
- 3:35Speaker 8: fathers and me and John, we are just extremely blessed,
- 3:39Speaker 8: and you know, we have a great family legacy, and
- 3:42Speaker 8: you know, we're just fortunate that each of us had
- 3:44Speaker 8: the success that we were able to have.
- 3:47Speaker 6: That's awesome.
- 3:47Speaker 7: So we're going to go back a little bit in
- 3:49Speaker 7: your in your career, and we're going to look at
- 3:51Speaker 7: the year twenty fourteen. I know that you and John
- 3:55Speaker 7: were enrolled at vm I and both members of their
- 3:58Speaker 7: basketball team, and some difficulties happened while you were.
- 4:02Speaker 6: On that team and in that school.
- 4:04Speaker 7: Could you tell us a little bit about that experience
- 4:07Speaker 7: at vm I.
- 4:09Speaker 8: Yeah, we were both at v my it was I
- 4:12Speaker 8: had red shirted the previous year waiting for John to
- 4:15Speaker 8: come and we were going to play four years together. Unfortunately,
- 4:19Speaker 8: the first semester his freshman year, which would be my
- 4:21Speaker 8: red shirt freshman year, at this point, my grandfather got
- 4:25Speaker 8: very sick, terminally ill. Unfortunately, me and my brother ended
- 4:29Speaker 8: up leave him school for that whole semester and coming
- 4:33Speaker 8: home and we lived with him and helped take care
- 4:37Speaker 8: of him. One of us spent the night with him
- 4:39Speaker 8: every night. So it was a tough decision to leave school,
- 4:42Speaker 8: but one that you know, we looked back on and
- 4:44Speaker 8: we're blessed to spent the time with my grandfather that
- 4:47Speaker 8: we did. And ultimately we both were pretty successful and
- 4:52Speaker 8: I think everything worked out the way it was supposed to.
- 4:54Speaker 5: When I'd make the case that when you have to
- 4:57Speaker 5: make that type of a decision, which not a lot
- 4:59Speaker 5: of people have ever been in that probably.
- 5:02Speaker 3: Position to have to to pick family.
- 5:06Speaker 5: Over a sport and a sport that you know that
- 5:10Speaker 5: you are really good at and it's possibly going to
- 5:13Speaker 5: bring you a lasting future. I can only compliment you
- 5:19Speaker 5: on on that type of a decision. And I don't
- 5:24Speaker 5: want to ask the question like, was there any point
- 5:27Speaker 5: in time that you were like, you know, hey, where's
- 5:32Speaker 5: basketball going to be? You know when we get done
- 5:35Speaker 5: with this? You know, because I'm thinking obviously you know,
- 5:39Speaker 5: it's a kind of a cold question, but I think
- 5:42Speaker 5: there's confidence in there and certainty in there that you
- 5:46Speaker 5: guys knew that you know, you could have you could
- 5:51Speaker 5: have that time with your with your grandfather and and
- 5:55Speaker 5: sports will be fine wherever it ends up being.
- 5:58Speaker 8: Is that, oh, absolutely exactly right. You know, we didn't
- 6:02Speaker 8: look at it as we're gonna leave school and you know,
- 6:04Speaker 8: this could be, this could be over forever. I think
- 6:08Speaker 8: we were both fairly confident that you know, hey, let's
- 6:11Speaker 8: we're gonna take a break right now, We're gonna go
- 6:13Speaker 8: home be with our grandfather.
- 6:16Speaker 9: Uh, this is.
- 6:16Speaker 8: Something we can come back to you know, we we
- 6:20Speaker 8: felt fairly confident that we would be able to come
- 6:22Speaker 8: back to it, and in the end, I think I
- 6:26Speaker 8: speak for both me and John, we ended up making
- 6:28Speaker 8: the right decisions. His path let them to Marshall. My path,
- 6:30Speaker 8: let me, you know, to a school in Texas and
- 6:33Speaker 8: then back to Marshall and ultimately finished up, you know,
- 6:36Speaker 8: making the NCAA tournament at Marshall and a pretty special experience.
- 6:39Speaker 8: So I think everything worked out exactly how it was
- 6:42Speaker 8: supposed to.
- 6:43Speaker 5: Do you guys think that, because I do. I think
- 6:46Speaker 5: your trip back to Marshall was was really the growth
- 6:51Speaker 5: in Marshall's basketball.
- 6:53Speaker 8: Yeah, And I wouldn't say it was. It was It
- 6:56Speaker 8: started with coach D'Antoni, to be honest with you. He
- 6:59Speaker 8: came in and Marshall for a while didn't recruit very
- 7:02Speaker 8: many you know, local players to the basketball program. Coach
- 7:06Speaker 8: Santoni came in and he started recruiting immediately the West
- 7:10Speaker 8: Virginia kids. There was Stevie Brownie from Logan, John C. J. Burks,
- 7:15Speaker 8: Jared West, the son of Jared West that you're gonna
- 7:18Speaker 8: have one here in a little bit, Rondell Watson, and
- 7:22Speaker 8: so not only did he start recruiting local kids, which
- 7:25Speaker 8: sort of built an excitement for the fans. As you know,
- 7:28Speaker 8: you have local kids playing, you're getting more fans support.
- 7:32Speaker 8: It turns out we have some pretty good basketball players
- 7:34Speaker 8: here in West Virginia, and it was the good combinations,
- 7:37Speaker 8: you know, to lift that program up from where coach
- 7:39Speaker 8: Antoni found it. And it's in a pretty good place now.
- 7:42Speaker 6: All right.
- 7:42Speaker 7: So you just touched on this a minute ago out
- 7:45Speaker 7: But let's fast forward to the year twenty eighteen when
- 7:49Speaker 7: you and John contributed to that NCAA basketball tournament run.
- 7:53Speaker 7: It was the first time the heard had been dancing
- 7:55Speaker 7: since nineteen eighty seven.
- 7:57Speaker 6: I remember it. It was amazing.
- 7:58Speaker 7: It was so much fun to watch you on the court.
- 8:01Speaker 7: Tell us a little bit about that experience for you.
- 8:03Speaker 6: And for the team.
- 8:05Speaker 8: Oh, it was a special, special run. I remember going
- 8:09Speaker 8: down the Conference USA tournament in Frisco, Texas at the
- 8:12Speaker 8: Dallas Cowboys practice facility, and we won our first game,
- 8:17Speaker 8: and playing at the same time as US was the
- 8:19Speaker 8: sort of a thorn in our side was Middle Tennessee State,
- 8:21Speaker 8: who had beat US in the conference championship the year before.
- 8:25Speaker 8: They end up getting upset and it was at that point,
- 8:28Speaker 8: you know, it was like, oh wow, this really just
- 8:30Speaker 8: opened up for everybody. We were playing our best basketball
- 8:34Speaker 8: of the year. We had won the last couple of
- 8:36Speaker 8: games of the regular season, and in fact, Middle Tennessee
- 8:38Speaker 8: was top twenty five in the country. We won at
- 8:40Speaker 8: their place, So we were on a good little run.
- 8:43Speaker 8: We ran through the conference tournament, played Western Kentucky in
- 8:45Speaker 8: the championship, had a big lead, they cut into it,
- 8:50Speaker 8: but ultimately we were able to get it done. And
- 8:51Speaker 8: then and then you know, it was just a special week.
- 8:54Speaker 8: And then you go to the NCAA tournament. We got
- 8:56Speaker 8: a great first round matchup that we thought in Wichita
- 8:58Speaker 8: State persunately able to beat them. So it was just
- 9:02Speaker 8: a special, special time and a special thing to be
- 9:04Speaker 8: a part of because that's memories, you know, we'll have
- 9:07Speaker 8: forever and it's just an experience none of us will
- 9:09Speaker 8: ever forget.
- 9:11Speaker 5: Okay, And and we've we've talked, we've talked to different
- 9:14Speaker 5: athletes and and had different types of conversations around the
- 9:20Speaker 5: work ethic that's required to become great. Could you talk
- 9:26Speaker 5: about yours just make you make the case the families
- 9:31Speaker 5: work work ethic in basketball and what what what kind
- 9:36Speaker 5: of time you spent and what all that you did
- 9:39Speaker 5: to make sure that you guys were going to be
- 9:42Speaker 5: the best that you could possibly be.
- 9:45Speaker 8: All we worked all the time, and that that was
- 9:48Speaker 8: you know you asked about leaving school. Take care of
- 9:50Speaker 8: our grandfather During the summer while my dad was working
- 9:53Speaker 8: and we weren't in school. My grandfather would pick up
- 9:55Speaker 8: me and my brother every day and take us down
- 9:58Speaker 8: at lunch time and u on the outdoor course of
- 10:00Speaker 8: South Rolston Middle School and put us through an hour
- 10:02Speaker 8: and a half workout every day at lunch, and then
- 10:05Speaker 8: we'd work out again at night. We'd play one on
- 10:08Speaker 8: one in the driveway or horse in the driveway. So
- 10:11Speaker 8: it's just you gotta love it, and it doesn't then
- 10:13Speaker 8: it doesn't feel like work.
- 10:14Speaker 9: You know.
- 10:14Speaker 8: People talk about you have to have a work ethics,
- 10:17Speaker 8: but it's really not grinding it out. It's really just
- 10:19Speaker 8: if you love it and enjoy doing it. The more
- 10:21Speaker 8: time you spend, the more you'll flourish and it'll show.
- 10:25Speaker 8: And uh, we were able to come by it naturally
- 10:27Speaker 8: with my dad and my grandpa. So yeah, we just
- 10:30Speaker 8: spent all the time we had in the gym because
- 10:32Speaker 8: that's what we like to do, and it ended up
- 10:34Speaker 8: paying off for us.
- 10:36Speaker 5: That's good man, and I have to kind of I've
- 10:39Speaker 5: never really thought of it that way. So I'm glad
- 10:41Speaker 5: that you said it because from we've had we constantly
- 10:43Speaker 5: go back and forth with conversations like this, because my
- 10:47Speaker 5: love for football, like me getting up and running, was
- 10:50Speaker 5: not like a punishing thing. It wasn't like I was
- 10:53Speaker 5: oh gosh or nobody necessarily made me do that. I
- 10:58Speaker 5: just wanted to be as good as I possibly can,
- 11:01Speaker 5: and I knew that it would take work, and you
- 11:04Speaker 5: didn't need that extra motivation.
- 11:07Speaker 8: Right, it's my you know, people call it the grind,
- 11:10Speaker 8: and you know I understand that, but you're not really
- 11:12Speaker 8: grinding it, doubt if that's what you like to do.
- 11:14Speaker 8: You know, I'd rather be shooting basketball than you know,
- 11:16Speaker 8: doing anything. So it was it was just what I enjoyed,
- 11:20Speaker 8: and because I enjoyed it, you know, it was that
- 11:22Speaker 8: much easier to do it as much as I wanted to.
- 11:24Speaker 6: Yeah, all right, that that's awesome.
- 11:27Speaker 7: So so we're gonna We're gonna go to the reason
- 11:30Speaker 7: we have you on the show.
- 11:31Speaker 9: Now.
- 11:31Speaker 7: We had to get that history. I could talk about
- 11:33Speaker 7: your your past play and the game. When when you
- 11:36Speaker 7: guys ended up playing WVU in the tournament, that was
- 11:40Speaker 7: that was something that was a thing of beauty and
- 11:42Speaker 7: some of the some of the things that happened. But anyway,
- 11:45Speaker 7: so we're gonna focus now on the TV t So,
- 11:47Speaker 7: you know, in this tournament you have you know, athletes
- 11:50Speaker 7: on teams that are they're just a diverse group coming
- 11:53Speaker 7: from different styles of play, you know, different schools of thought.
- 11:57Speaker 7: So how do you adopt your coaching style to the
- 11:59Speaker 7: team et format. You've got this mix of former college
- 12:03Speaker 7: and professional players. What do you do to make that team.
- 12:06Speaker 8: Gel Well, I think the main thing we do is
- 12:10Speaker 8: not so much, you know, not so much as coaching related.
- 12:13Speaker 8: Is we bring the guys in you know, four or
- 12:15Speaker 8: five days in advance. We put them up in a hotel.
- 12:18Speaker 8: We practice a couple of times a day, and it's
- 12:21Speaker 8: not so much practice, But then we do team dinners
- 12:23Speaker 8: where kids are where guys are bringing their kids, where
- 12:25Speaker 8: guys are bringing their wives or girlfriends and just hanging out.
- 12:28Speaker 8: And more so than the ex'es and o's and basketball
- 12:30Speaker 8: is you know, we have our core group of Marshall
- 12:33Speaker 8: guys that are like brothers from our time at Marshall.
- 12:35Speaker 8: But we've sort of adopted these other guys from the
- 12:38Speaker 8: TVC team into that little family. And I think that's
- 12:42Speaker 8: really our big advantage is guys really like each other.
- 12:46Speaker 9: You know.
- 12:46Speaker 8: We'll have JP Tokoto, who's from played at North Carolina,
- 12:49Speaker 8: he's played with us the last couple of years. He
- 12:50Speaker 8: comes in, he'll be playing with John's girls at dinner,
- 12:53Speaker 8: you know, like like that's their uncle JP. So that's
- 12:57Speaker 8: sort of you know, that's sort of the coaching or
- 13:00Speaker 8: chemistry that we tried to build in terms of x's
- 13:02Speaker 8: and o's. These guys are pros. We just let them
- 13:05Speaker 8: go out there and we play the game and you know,
- 13:06Speaker 8: try to put him in the right direction. But I
- 13:08Speaker 8: think that's where our big advantages is the chemistry that
- 13:11Speaker 8: we've been able to build with our teams.
- 13:13Speaker 3: I see I.
- 13:14Speaker 5: Saw something on I don't know if it was on
- 13:16Speaker 5: Facebook or where it was, but there was a conversation
- 13:20Speaker 5: or an article about not having a like a clipboard
- 13:26Speaker 5: to like draw out your place, like you're just kind
- 13:28Speaker 5: of like writing them down on the floor, you know, And.
- 13:35Speaker 3: Is it that are you that comfortable in the players.
- 13:42Speaker 5: That you're coaching that, Hey, they're gonna get it.
- 13:46Speaker 8: Oh absolutely, because you know, John's our point guard, so
- 13:49Speaker 8: he's sort of our coach on the floor. I always
- 13:51Speaker 8: trust him to get everybody in the right spot. But
- 13:53Speaker 8: that's what we look into when we recruit these guys,
- 13:56Speaker 8: is you know, are you good? Are are they good guys?
- 13:58Speaker 8: Mainly because you know they're around everybody's kids, around everybody's
- 14:01Speaker 8: girlfriends and families. So if they're good guys, we bring
- 14:04Speaker 8: them in. And those are the type of guys you
- 14:05Speaker 8: can trust, you know, get stuff done when it starts
- 14:08Speaker 8: getting tough. And I know what you're talking about. My
- 14:10Speaker 8: grandpa started when he coached my dad. He had a
- 14:12Speaker 8: little piece of chalk and before they had clipboard, and
- 14:16Speaker 8: he would just draw on the sideline a little with
- 14:18Speaker 8: his piece of chalk. And so my dad did that
- 14:21Speaker 8: with us, and you know, he always brings this piece
- 14:23Speaker 8: of chalk and that's just how we get it done.
- 14:25Speaker 6: You know nowadays, that's that's that's crazy. That's so good
- 14:30Speaker 6: to know.
- 14:31Speaker 7: So in this tournament, you know, you've got to maintain
- 14:35Speaker 7: team morale. We you know, we we alluded to earlier.
- 14:38Speaker 7: It's unique type of single elimination. There's a lot of
- 14:42Speaker 7: high stakes involved. It's it's intense. So how do how
- 14:46Speaker 7: do you create besides you know, bringing the guys together,
- 14:49Speaker 7: how do you keep the team morale throughout a demanding
- 14:52Speaker 7: tournament positive? I mean, do you create how do you
- 14:54Speaker 7: create that winning culture in your team?
- 14:57Speaker 8: Well, I think the winning culture was sort of we
- 15:00Speaker 8: talked about it earlier with Marshall is it's just a
- 15:02Speaker 8: continuation of Coach Santoni. We have guys although they don't
- 15:06Speaker 8: play as much now, Steve Browning, Ryan Taylor, Rondo Watson,
- 15:10Speaker 8: you know, are older, all working real jobs now, not
- 15:12Speaker 8: playing professionally. Those guys may not play a second all game,
- 15:16Speaker 8: but they have good attitudes on the bench over there,
- 15:18Speaker 8: boosting their teammates up. And that's just something that coach
- 15:21Speaker 8: Santoni said is you know, it's about the team. It's
- 15:24Speaker 8: not about you. It's about you know, it's not about
- 15:26Speaker 8: how far you go in the car ride, It's about
- 15:28Speaker 8: how much you enjoy it. And you guys like that
- 15:31Speaker 8: who just accept their role in our team first, and
- 15:34Speaker 8: that bleeds over to the guys who are playing. If
- 15:36Speaker 8: you know, if the guys who aren't playing are just
- 15:38Speaker 8: there you know, you know, to make sure everything goes
- 15:40Speaker 8: all right, or having a good time and having a
- 15:41Speaker 8: good attitude. If you're playing and getting time, you know,
- 15:44Speaker 8: you can't help but be positive. And that energy is infectious.
- 15:46Speaker 8: And we have a bunch of good guys on that team,
- 15:49Speaker 8: and uh we recruit we recruit good guys as well,
- 15:52Speaker 8: and that sort of it just sort of builds on itself.
- 15:54Speaker 8: At snowball, it's a snowball effect.
- 15:56Speaker 5: This this is a little bit off off that path,
- 16:00Speaker 5: But because of what you said, if you were, if
- 16:03Speaker 5: you were talking to a high school coach, maybe even
- 16:07Speaker 5: a college coach who's looking to recruit a player.
- 16:12Speaker 3: Sometimes I think today, the better.
- 16:15Speaker 5: You are as as an athlete, you know, a coacher
- 16:19Speaker 5: wants you and they'll even sacrifice some of the down
- 16:24Speaker 5: falls that come with that. If you were, if you
- 16:28Speaker 5: were to talk to a coach and say, hey, these
- 16:31Speaker 5: how do you interview a particular player, What do you
- 16:33Speaker 5: sit down and what are you looking for? How do
- 16:35Speaker 5: you evaluate past their skill set? Because I know a
- 16:40Speaker 5: lot of times when I was recruited back quote back
- 16:43Speaker 5: in the day, the coaches really didn't they they've already
- 16:47Speaker 5: saw what you do as an athlete. Now they want
- 16:50Speaker 5: to try to figure out who you are as a person.
- 16:52Speaker 5: That process I think parents today are not aware of
- 16:56Speaker 5: that that's going to happen. And if your child or
- 17:00Speaker 5: athlete can't can't meet that criteria, Like how important do
- 17:06Speaker 5: you do you think that is for you guys on
- 17:09Speaker 5: your team and how how how critical is it for
- 17:12Speaker 5: a kid from high school trying to go to college?
- 17:14Speaker 8: Oh, it's it's extremely critical. I coach college basketball at
- 17:18Speaker 8: Glenville State for a couple of years once I got
- 17:21Speaker 8: done at Marshall as the assistant coach, and that's something
- 17:23Speaker 8: we looked at was, you know, our saying was great
- 17:26Speaker 8: kids do great things. So yes, you can be tremendously talented,
- 17:30Speaker 8: but if you're if you know, if you're doing if
- 17:32Speaker 8: you're not going to class, if you're getting in trouble,
- 17:34Speaker 8: you know it's going to bleed over and infect the court.
- 17:36Speaker 8: And there's a lot of kids that have talent across
- 17:39Speaker 8: the country. So that's the thing that differentiates these kids
- 17:43Speaker 8: is how good of attitudes you have, what kind of
- 17:45Speaker 8: person you are, because the good tea for are the
- 17:47Speaker 8: ones that you can count on to get things done
- 17:49Speaker 8: when times start getting tough, and uh so that's what
- 17:51Speaker 8: we you know, we we recruited at Glenville like that.
- 17:55Speaker 8: Most colleges do recruit like that, and that's what we
- 17:57Speaker 8: sort of do with TVT is you want people that
- 18:00Speaker 8: you know, even if you're going to lose some you
- 18:02Speaker 8: want people you're going to enjoy losing with and aren't
- 18:05Speaker 8: going to like turn on each other. And I think
- 18:06Speaker 8: that's one reason we're so successful in this tournament is
- 18:09Speaker 8: even though you know it may go against you for
- 18:11Speaker 8: a little bit, we have guys that rally together and
- 18:13Speaker 8: we always find a way to bounce back.
- 18:15Speaker 6: That's awesome.
- 18:16Speaker 7: Okay, So I have a question related to this week's tournament.
- 18:20Speaker 7: I know that you you know, you're aware that Heard
- 18:23Speaker 7: That is in one bracket and you've got Best Virginia
- 18:26Speaker 7: in the other bracket, and it's set up that if
- 18:28Speaker 7: you both teams, you know, respectively, win their games, you
- 18:31Speaker 7: would face each other on Sunday, which in the state
- 18:35Speaker 7: of West Virginia it's kind of viewed as a rivalry game.
- 18:39Speaker 7: Do you guys feel that like kind of vibe that
- 18:44Speaker 7: it's it's not just Best Virginia versus Heard That, but
- 18:48Speaker 7: it's more like Marshall versus WVU. Do you feed off
- 18:51Speaker 7: of that type of like energy in the crowd.
- 18:55Speaker 8: Well, yes, we feed off the energy in the crowd
- 18:58Speaker 8: because the crowd is amazing. You know, the people just
- 19:01Speaker 8: love basketball. They come out. But we've you know personally,
- 19:05Speaker 8: you know, we play up to it, but we think
- 19:07Speaker 8: that rivalry is a little you know, overblown because in
- 19:10Speaker 8: the summers, we know those West Virginia guys, they know us.
- 19:14Speaker 8: You know, we play pick up together in the summer.
- 19:16Speaker 8: We like those guys. I like to think they like us.
- 19:19Speaker 8: So you know, it's not a bad blood rivalry between us.
- 19:22Speaker 8: We both sides realize, you know, the schools are the
- 19:25Speaker 8: two schools in West Virginia. But you know those those
- 19:28Speaker 8: are good guys on that side and we get along
- 19:31Speaker 8: with them. And I would hope that, you know, next year,
- 19:34Speaker 8: if he keeps going forward, they put us a little
- 19:36Speaker 8: bit farther in the bracket, maybe we meet in the
- 19:37Speaker 8: championship instead. Right, Yeah, but that energy will be electric
- 19:41Speaker 8: at the Civic.
- 19:42Speaker 6: Center for sure.
- 19:43Speaker 7: Okay, so we've appreciated your time. We're about to let
- 19:46Speaker 7: you go. Do you is there anything you want to
- 19:48Speaker 7: share with our audience, what you're doing now as far
- 19:50Speaker 7: as business or anything.
- 19:53Speaker 8: Yeah, I'm a turn in Froston. So if anybody needs
- 19:56Speaker 8: any illegal help, come on down see me. I have
- 19:58Speaker 8: an office in downtown Charston. But outside of that, I
- 20:02Speaker 8: just hope people come out support. We play at six
- 20:05Speaker 8: on Friday, best Virginia plays at eight. Come out root
- 20:08Speaker 8: us both on and then hopefully come out Sunday and
- 20:10Speaker 8: see another heck of a game.
- 20:12Speaker 6: Can't wait to see it? All right, well, thank you,
- 20:14Speaker 6: all right.
- 20:14Speaker 3: Man, we appreciate you being on.
- 20:16Speaker 8: No, thank you.
- 20:16Speaker 5: All all right, ladies and gentlemen. We'll take a quick
- 20:19Speaker 5: break and we will be right back.
- 20:20Speaker 10: Let's face it, bad things happen to good people seriously
- 20:23Speaker 10: injured in a car accident, trucking accident, injured in a
- 20:25Speaker 10: grocery store, or even wrongfully arrested or falsely accused of
- 20:29Speaker 10: a crime. Life happens, and when it happens to you,
- 20:31Speaker 10: you will need sound legal advice and aggressive representation. That's
- 20:34Speaker 10: when you call Attorney Frank Walker at three zero four
- 20:37Speaker 10: four one three zero one seven nine. That's three zero

- 21:13Speaker 4: Welcome to Let's Talk with Carl Lee. Let's talk is
- 21:16Speaker 4: prompably presented by Attorney Frank Walker, Real Talk, real experience,
- 21:21Speaker 4: Real results, Frank Walker Law dot com. Let that conversation
- 21:25Speaker 4: begin on Let's talk.
- 21:27Speaker 3: All right, ladies and gentlemen, we are back Lisa.
- 21:31Speaker 5: You know, one of the interesting things about about the
- 21:34Speaker 5: conversation that we have had just here recently, I'm learning
- 21:41Speaker 5: more so about athletes that are that are great. Like
- 21:48Speaker 5: if you listen to this his conversation right like you
- 21:52Speaker 5: you don't even get that, like you don't get to
- 21:54Speaker 5: feel like of a person who has some kind of
- 21:58Speaker 5: like great history in basketball.
- 22:01Speaker 3: It's like he's just kind of like talking.
- 22:03Speaker 5: And I think that that, to me, I think is
- 22:07Speaker 5: so important that you don't get that they're not full
- 22:11Speaker 5: of their selves, but they know that they know how
- 22:14Speaker 5: great they have been, but they don't throw it at you, right,
- 22:17Speaker 5: It doesn't come across like they're saying that.
- 22:20Speaker 7: The ego and arrogance is out the window. It seems
- 22:22Speaker 7: like when they come on the air with us, which
- 22:24Speaker 7: is refreshing. Yes, it's not the persona of the athletes
- 22:28Speaker 7: some of the athletes you see on television, let's just
- 22:30Speaker 7: put it that way. I do feel like he is
- 22:35Speaker 7: genuine and he was very human about telling his experience
- 22:38Speaker 7: with his grandfather and the VM I think, and I
- 22:41Speaker 7: think that was just such a dynamic and selfless thing
- 22:47Speaker 7: that they did to put their basketball. They could have
- 22:50Speaker 7: possibly ruined what they had well at VMI, you know,
- 22:54Speaker 7: And what they did was they put their career, their
- 22:58Speaker 7: future on hold to care for a loved one. And
- 23:02Speaker 7: to me, that just speaks volumes about the kind of
- 23:05Speaker 7: character that Odd has.
- 23:07Speaker 3: That and family and and and.
- 23:09Speaker 6: The family and family absolutely.
- 23:11Speaker 5: And you know, you would think, to your to your point,
- 23:15Speaker 5: you would think that that most people would be like, no,
- 23:18Speaker 5: just you know, he would want you to play. He
- 23:21Speaker 5: would want you to play, so go play, you know,
- 23:24Speaker 5: And and I could see that convincing me to go,
- 23:28Speaker 5: you know. But it was it was so important for
- 23:31Speaker 5: them that there seems to be that there was no
- 23:34Speaker 5: conversation happening that was going to stop us from because
- 23:38Speaker 5: can can you imagine being a coach? Can you imagine
- 23:41Speaker 5: being a team of teammates like you want, you need
- 23:44Speaker 5: these guys.
- 23:45Speaker 6: Yeah, And I'm not sure what time of year that occurred.
- 23:48Speaker 7: I don't know if it was in basketball season, but
- 23:50Speaker 7: you know, definitely they weren't there.
- 23:51Speaker 6: When they weren't it began or ended.
- 23:53Speaker 7: So another dynamic that I thought was interesting in our conversation.
- 23:58Speaker 7: It's always the same with when you ask players about rivalries.
- 24:04Speaker 7: The rivalries don't exist. And you've even said this, the
- 24:07Speaker 7: rivalries exist between fans. The players all seem to know
- 24:11Speaker 7: each other and get on. And I'll be interested because
- 24:13Speaker 7: I would like to present that question to our next
- 24:15Speaker 7: guest as well and see what his perspective is. But
- 24:18Speaker 7: to the fans that you know, go to Marshall and
- 24:22Speaker 7: go to WVU when they play each other, it's a
- 24:24Speaker 7: big deal. But to you know, to the players, they
- 24:26Speaker 7: all they all kind of connect and know each other,
- 24:28Speaker 7: and you know they play hard, but it's not the kind.
- 24:32Speaker 5: Of and I think there's also the respect of the
- 24:35Speaker 5: of the of that of that player. So if I'm
- 24:38Speaker 5: if we're rivals, you know, but I know you you know,
- 24:43Speaker 5: so you know, I'm going to go.
- 24:44Speaker 7: Social media has changed a lot of that. I think
- 24:46Speaker 7: social media it's not like it used to be, like
- 24:49Speaker 7: they can all connect.
- 24:50Speaker 5: I think social media has taken away that good battery
- 24:55Speaker 5: indifferent you know. But you know, even even the friendship
- 24:59Speaker 5: that you know we had Sterling Sterling sharp one not
- 25:02Speaker 5: too long ago.
- 25:05Speaker 3: And and the Viking packer raval.
- 25:08Speaker 5: Is that's yeah, yeah, it's constant, you know, you being
- 25:12Speaker 5: a packer brand.
- 25:13Speaker 3: We joke back and forth about it.
- 25:15Speaker 6: But but then don'te.
- 25:17Speaker 7: Calpepper when you told him, was like, ah, that's okay, yeah,
- 25:19Speaker 7: you know, I mean, I guess it's just the whole
- 25:22Speaker 7: attitude of the of the player, of.
- 25:24Speaker 6: The players of the player.
- 25:25Speaker 11: Do you guys think that maybe the especially I think
- 25:29Speaker 11: back to like nineties TV, do you think that media
- 25:32Speaker 11: has had a play in sort of creating this almost
- 25:35Speaker 11: larger than life persona for a lot of these players,
- 25:38Speaker 11: Because I'm what I'm with you, Carl. I think, as
- 25:40Speaker 11: we've had these different folks on on your podcast every week,
- 25:44Speaker 11: it seems like humble is the best description for so
- 25:48Speaker 11: many of these guys. And I think there's maybe this
- 25:52Speaker 11: kind of disconnect on from a fan perspective of thinking, well,
- 25:56Speaker 11: you know, they're a professional athlete, or they've they've done whatever,
- 25:58Speaker 11: so they're this larger than life personally, we forget that
- 26:01Speaker 11: they're all still human at the end of the day.
- 26:03Speaker 5: Yes, And and I think the other piece to that
- 26:06Speaker 5: that's that that that that we need to consider is
- 26:10Speaker 5: when you're on the field, you are that player. You
- 26:14Speaker 5: are everything and anything that somebody has said great about you.
- 26:18Speaker 3: You're trying to to to confirm that.
- 26:22Speaker 5: But as soon as you walk off, take your helmet off,
- 26:26Speaker 5: take your cleats off, it's work. It's it was work, right,
- 26:30Speaker 5: I'm off work, so you know.
- 26:32Speaker 7: At yeah, yeah, it's not that you don't love it,
- 26:35Speaker 7: it's just that that's what you do. And then when
- 26:37Speaker 7: you leave the it's just like when you're at work
- 26:39Speaker 7: or doing anything in life. You have different personalities and
- 26:43Speaker 7: different faces for different audiences.
- 26:45Speaker 5: And I think that excuse me, I'm sorry, no, I
- 26:48Speaker 5: was gonna say I And one where I think it
- 26:51Speaker 5: is hard for athletes to to figure that out is
- 26:56Speaker 5: when they're young, Like a high school athlete that's really
- 26:59Speaker 5: good he or she a lot of times it's all
- 27:04Speaker 5: about me, and I think that you know, they don't
- 27:08Speaker 5: know that yet, and at some point in time you
- 27:11Speaker 5: have to get to and I think when you get
- 27:13Speaker 5: into a pro locker room, you have to realize that
- 27:17Speaker 5: every single person in that room is great and you're
- 27:22Speaker 5: just part of the greatness that we can achieve together
- 27:27Speaker 5: because I can't. Yeah, it's the teamwork thing. I can't
- 27:30Speaker 5: do this thing out here. I can cover a guy
- 27:34Speaker 5: all day long, but they if they throw somewhere else
- 27:38Speaker 5: and score a touchdown and we lose, what what good
- 27:42Speaker 5: was it for me to think, Hey, at list, I
- 27:44Speaker 5: covered my guy. You know what happened to the guy
- 27:47Speaker 5: on the other side, you know? And I really do.
- 27:50Speaker 5: I can appreciate, you know, that understanding and that humbleness
- 27:56Speaker 5: that comes with that, and and.
- 27:58Speaker 3: You can you can feel it, you could just have.
- 28:00Speaker 3: You can't fake that, No, you.
- 28:02Speaker 7: You can't fake being humble and human, like you said, Matt,
- 28:06Speaker 7: I mean, it's just something that I've been pleasantly surprised
- 28:11Speaker 7: with a lot of our guests. I'm glad we brought
- 28:13Speaker 7: that up because it's been like, you expect something maybe
- 28:16Speaker 7: a little more. And to Matt's point, you know, what
- 28:18Speaker 7: you see on media is a whole different picture of
- 28:22Speaker 7: them painted compared to win they're in person.
- 28:24Speaker 11: Well, I think we forget to I mean, there's still
- 28:27Speaker 11: twenty four hours in a day. There are what sixteen
- 28:30Speaker 11: seventeen NFL football games a year. What are you doing
- 28:33Speaker 11: for the rest of that three hundred and sixty five?
- 28:35Speaker 11: I mean, even when you were in the league, Carl,
- 28:37Speaker 11: you probably still went home and had to occasionally do
- 28:39Speaker 11: the dishes or laundry.
- 28:43Speaker 6: I'm sure Donna never asked him to do that.
- 28:46Speaker 3: I watched clothes this morning. I mean a show.
- 28:51Speaker 11: It's a silly thing to think about, But I mean
- 28:53Speaker 11: it's regardless of what you do day in and day out.
- 28:57Speaker 11: As as you said as your job, We're all still
- 29:01Speaker 11: doing a lot of the same day to day stuff,
- 29:03Speaker 11: regardless of whether you're going to an NFL stadium to
- 29:06Speaker 11: clock in for the day, or you're here recording at
- 29:08Speaker 11: the radio station or working down the street at.
- 29:10Speaker 4: The coffee shop.
- 29:11Speaker 3: Yeah, you're doing.
- 29:12Speaker 6: Yeah, that's a perfect way to say it.
- 29:13Speaker 5: Yeah, all right, let's take another quick break and we
- 29:16Speaker 5: will be right back.

- 30:09Speaker 4: Welcome to Let's Talk with Carl Lee. Let's talk is
- 30:12Speaker 4: promptly presented by Attorney Frank Walker. Real talk, real experience,
- 30:16Speaker 4: real results, Frank Walker Law dot com. Let that conversation
- 30:20Speaker 4: begin on Let's talk.
- 30:22Speaker 3: All right, ladies and gentlemen, we are back on the
- 30:25Speaker 3: break and.
- 30:27Speaker 5: Miss Odie is going to going to introduce everyone to
- 30:31Speaker 5: our next.
- 30:32Speaker 6: Game, our caravan of TBT coaches. Tonight.
- 30:35Speaker 7: I love it so Our next coach is currently the
- 30:38Speaker 7: head coach for the TBT team coming to the Coliseum
- 30:42Speaker 7: on Friday, Best Virginia. I'll give you a little history
- 30:45Speaker 7: for this for this prestigious coach. He's a former mountaineer
- 30:49Speaker 7: who played at West Virginia between the years of nineteen
- 30:52Speaker 7: ninety four nineteen ninety eight. He averaged ten point six
- 30:55Speaker 7: points per game is senior season, and he is currently
- 30:59Speaker 7: a head coach of the Notre Dame High school basketball program.
- 31:04Speaker 7: And he returns to lead the Best Virginia team after
- 31:07Speaker 7: a break from it. He was their initial coach in
- 31:10Speaker 7: twenty nineteen. So welcome Jared West to the podcast.
- 31:15Speaker 9: Oh, thank you God, thank you, Thank you guys for
- 31:17Speaker 9: having me.
- 31:17Speaker 3: Thank you So, Jared, this is Caraley. How are you man.
- 31:21Speaker 9: I'm doing great, doing great. I've heard great things about you.
- 31:24Speaker 3: They're not true.
- 31:26Speaker 6: Please don't tell him that, Jared. Come on.
- 31:31Speaker 5: So I've got one question, because I would always get questions,
- 31:35Speaker 5: and I've tried, I've taken my turn trying to be
- 31:39Speaker 5: a coach and all that kind of stuff. What got
- 31:42Speaker 5: you into the coaching realm? What is it and what
- 31:48Speaker 5: makes you love it?
- 31:51Speaker 9: So I never expected to be a coach. When I
- 31:54Speaker 9: married my wife, she's from Clarksburg, West Virginia, and I
- 31:57Speaker 9: started doing basketball training, which I have. I love to
- 31:59Speaker 9: do because I love kids and just having to train
- 32:02Speaker 9: the principal of Notre Dame High School and she said,
- 32:05Speaker 9: you know what, you would be a great coach, and
- 32:07Speaker 9: I said, well, I'm kind of old school. I'm big
- 32:13Speaker 9: on accountability and discipline and struct She did that type
- 32:16Speaker 9: of thing and so I tried it, and to be
- 32:19Speaker 9: honest with you, I immediately fell in love with it.
- 32:22Speaker 9: It's the closest thing to playing. It is very very hard,
- 32:26Speaker 9: especially especially for someone who played at a high level,
- 32:32Speaker 9: because you see things that you know should happen, but
- 32:36Speaker 9: they might not in that way. So that's about That
- 32:40Speaker 9: was my hardest adjustment. But fell in love with it.
- 32:43Speaker 9: To be able to mentor kids, uh to now I've
- 32:49Speaker 9: been coaching enough that I'm I'm training kids that I've coached,
- 32:51Speaker 9: Their kids are coming through. I've been invited to weddings.
- 32:55Speaker 9: It is the best thing in the world because you
- 32:57Speaker 9: never know how much impact you have on on on kids.
- 33:02Speaker 9: And my mom, when I told her what I was doing,
- 33:04Speaker 9: she said, that's your ministry, that's uh. That's your way
- 33:07Speaker 9: that you can uh mentor and and speak God into
- 33:10Speaker 9: people's lives. And uh so I've taken it and run
- 33:15Speaker 9: with it. And I've been blessed to have administration who
- 33:17Speaker 9: have allowed me to be me, which which is very
- 33:22Speaker 9: very important. If you're a situation where you can't be yourself,
- 33:25Speaker 9: it's miserable when you have people that back you, that
- 33:27Speaker 9: allow you to be yourself. So it's been great for me.
- 33:32Speaker 6: That's good, that's that's amazing.
- 33:34Speaker 7: So so Jared, let's go back in the day for
- 33:36Speaker 7: a minute before we fast forward to the TV T
- 33:38Speaker 7: Let's just go back to your playing days in Morgantown.
- 33:41Speaker 7: So you were fortunate enough to be a player under
- 33:45Speaker 7: the realm of Gail Catlet.
- 33:48Speaker 6: What was it like playing for Gail back back then?
- 33:51Speaker 9: Oh, man kitty cat we called him that, it was.
- 33:54Speaker 9: He was an interesting guy. He was he was if
- 33:57Speaker 9: he was a great exces and old guy. If you
- 34:00Speaker 9: did well, he if we call the time out and
- 34:02Speaker 9: he designed to play, If we did it, we normally
- 34:04Speaker 9: got a pretty good shot of score. He was a
- 34:07Speaker 9: great He was a great guy. Miss Stannis, who recently passed,
- 34:11Speaker 9: was his lovely wife. She was the nicest woman in
- 34:13Speaker 9: the world. She would bring us cookies for every road trip.
- 34:16Speaker 9: I mean, she was the best. But Coach Kelly was great,
- 34:20Speaker 9: and I tell that. I'll tell all the young guys
- 34:22Speaker 9: like John and Dayshawn, when when we first started with
- 34:25Speaker 9: the TBT and they got this new practice facility. I
- 34:28Speaker 9: tell a story that when back in the day before
- 34:31Speaker 9: n I L and all that stuff, me and Brent
- 34:33Speaker 9: Solheim and Damian Os we come to the coliseum and
- 34:36Speaker 9: we beg and plead and knock on the door. Nobody
- 34:38Speaker 9: would let us in. Got practice facilities, and they got
- 34:43Speaker 9: managers that come rebound. I mean, you talk about the
- 34:45Speaker 9: title kids, But anyway, it was. It was great. My
- 34:49Speaker 9: junior year, we should have gone to the NCAA Tournament,
- 34:54Speaker 9: and we ended up goingting to the n I t
- 34:55Speaker 9: which was a great experience, but it kind of set
- 34:57Speaker 9: our senior class up for a big time run we
- 35:02Speaker 9: had sixteen years. We went to the Sweet sixteen. I
- 35:05Speaker 9: was blessed to make a shot that people still talking
- 35:09Speaker 9: about the day and I tell.
- 35:10Speaker 6: People, pay no, no, you go ahead, sir, you go ahead.
- 35:18Speaker 6: I'm teasing.
- 35:19Speaker 9: I get rolling. Great. It was great playing on the
- 35:23Speaker 9: coach calling because The most important thing that I like
- 35:26Speaker 9: is I had a special special relationship with the fans.
- 35:30Speaker 9: People don't yes you did them. They don't understand the
- 35:36Speaker 9: the great fans and the great people of West Virginia.
- 35:38Speaker 9: If you would have told me I was going to
- 35:40Speaker 9: move from Mississippi and never go home, you I ought
- 35:43Speaker 9: to tell you you were crazy because I'd never heard
- 35:46Speaker 9: of West Virginia really before I got here. I heard
- 35:49Speaker 9: of as Harris because they just played yes the boat.
- 35:53Speaker 9: So for me to be here twenty five plus years,
- 35:57Speaker 9: it's a lot due to coach calling and him bringing
- 36:00Speaker 9: me in and my great senior class I was with.
- 36:04Speaker 5: When you when you when you think back on that
- 36:08Speaker 5: during that time, where where did you did you? Could
- 36:12Speaker 5: you foresee yourself being who you are now.
- 36:17Speaker 3: Because of your coach?
- 36:19Speaker 5: Because I know when when when Sunny Randall came into
- 36:23Speaker 5: Marshall University and was doing all this yelling and screaming, man,
- 36:28Speaker 5: I was like, who is this dude? I like, man,
- 36:32Speaker 5: this dude ain't gonna have no kind of impact on me.
- 36:36Speaker 5: But to this day, man, I feel like he is
- 36:39Speaker 5: the catalyst of who I am.
- 36:42Speaker 9: That's a grass One of the best questions anybody's ever
- 36:45Speaker 9: asked me, And I'm gonna give you the PG version
- 36:48Speaker 9: because I have an X rated version, which you probably
- 36:52Speaker 9: have also. Yes, but ask your question. If you would
- 36:55Speaker 9: have told me my freshman year how things it up,
- 37:00Speaker 9: I would I would have thought you were crazy. It was.
- 37:05Speaker 9: It was not an easy road for me. Yeah, it
- 37:11Speaker 9: was not an easy road. But yes, I give it
- 37:16Speaker 9: all the good because it was Adversity in life is
- 37:21Speaker 9: something that until you face it, you don't know how
- 37:23Speaker 9: to deal with it. And I was a big fish
- 37:26Speaker 9: coming out of high school and when I got here,
- 37:30Speaker 9: it was rough, and it took me a year or
- 37:32Speaker 9: so to deal with, like to kind of handle the adversity.
- 37:35Speaker 9: And once I matured, it was the best thing in
- 37:38Speaker 9: the world for me because it made me a better husband,
- 37:41Speaker 9: a better father. It taught me that life wasn't easy,
- 37:44Speaker 9: and it actually prepared me for my senior year and
- 37:48Speaker 9: for that moment because as you know, as a as
- 37:51Speaker 9: a college player, I mean, game day of sweet everything
- 37:55Speaker 9: else is rough. It's not what. It's not as fun
- 37:59Speaker 9: and and easy everybody might think it is. So I
- 38:04Speaker 9: had to learn tough, tough skin, and I was blessed
- 38:09Speaker 9: to have a good group of guys around me my
- 38:11Speaker 9: senior year and we went to the Sweet sixteen and
- 38:14Speaker 9: you know, me and Coach Contay's relationship was was very
- 38:17Speaker 9: interesting up and down. But I can't I can't stress
- 38:21Speaker 9: enough how it molded me as a man, how the
- 38:29Speaker 9: experiences that that I that I went through with him.
- 38:31Speaker 9: Once again, everything wasn't good. It was easy, but it
- 38:36Speaker 9: made me understand and like you know, life isn't always fair.
- 38:39Speaker 9: You got to continue to work and be diligent in
- 38:42Speaker 9: your process. So but yeah, I would have never thought
- 38:45Speaker 9: my freshman and sophomore year that it would end up
- 38:47Speaker 9: the ways it did.
- 38:49Speaker 3: I'm gonna promise, I'm gonna give you a chance to
- 38:53Speaker 3: get in. I'm telling you.
- 38:56Speaker 5: But but to your point, I have I have the
- 39:00Speaker 5: similar story. Like when I go to Minnesota the second year,
- 39:06Speaker 5: there's a coach they bring in, this new coach, Less Steckel,
- 39:09Speaker 5: and he's talking about he's going to be doing all
- 39:11Speaker 5: this kind of stuff, We're going to be working hard.
- 39:14Speaker 5: You need to come up to Minnesota because if you don't,
- 39:17Speaker 5: you're not going to be able to make it through
- 39:18Speaker 5: the running all the running tests and all this kind
- 39:21Speaker 5: of stuff. And I'm like thinking to myself, Man, I
- 39:24Speaker 5: was with Sonny Randall and what I do know is
- 39:28Speaker 5: I know how to train. And I can't imagine any
- 39:31Speaker 5: of these dudes. I don't care what school you played for.
- 39:35Speaker 5: There's no way that you had to run like I
- 39:38Speaker 5: had to run at Marshall University and you. And I
- 39:44Speaker 5: told him, I said, look, I'm not coming. I'll come
- 39:48Speaker 5: with camp because you're not paying this. You know, you're
- 39:50Speaker 5: not paying us to come, You're not putting this up.
- 39:52Speaker 5: I can't do that, so I'll come with the season,
- 39:55Speaker 5: but trust me, I'll be ready. And I got there
- 39:58Speaker 5: and it it was a shame because I felt like
- 40:02Speaker 5: this was I was.
- 40:03Speaker 3: It was harder for me in colleagues than this was right,
- 40:06Speaker 3: you know, right.
- 40:07Speaker 5: But I only say that because there are these coaches
- 40:10Speaker 5: who you think you could you you want to hate
- 40:13Speaker 5: them because you don't like the yelling and the screaming
- 40:17Speaker 5: and all of that, but you have no idea of
- 40:20Speaker 5: where and when that's going to impact you and save
- 40:24Speaker 5: you in the future.
- 40:26Speaker 9: Right, And that's and you're you're you're exactly right. You're
- 40:29Speaker 9: you're you're spot on on that, You're spot on it.
- 40:32Speaker 9: It's amazing the life lessons you learn through the adversity
- 40:34Speaker 9: and emoes you. And I hear myself saying a lot
- 40:38Speaker 9: of things to my kids, and I look at it
- 40:42Speaker 9: and I smile because I'm like, when you're the one
- 40:45Speaker 9: here and that you're like, man, this guy's crazy olds you,
- 40:49Speaker 9: It mows you. It does it does, Yes, it does.
- 40:53Speaker 7: So So, Jared, I'm going to go back to that
- 40:56Speaker 7: buzzer beating basket against the Cincinnati bear cat Cats in
- 41:00Speaker 7: the second round of the NCAA Tournament in nineteen ninety eight.
- 41:04Speaker 7: It propelled your team into the sweet sixteen. Walk us
- 41:08Speaker 7: through that play. What was going through your head? There's
- 41:11Speaker 7: that last second shot.
- 41:14Speaker 3: Did you know you were going to take the shot?
- 41:15Speaker 3: Did you know you were going to go?
- 41:16Speaker 9: Oh yeah, yeah, okay, okay, Yeah.
- 41:20Speaker 3: I was hat Oh yeah, okay. I didn't want to
- 41:24Speaker 3: kill you.
- 41:25Speaker 9: No, No, I got big enough shoulders to win it,
- 41:28Speaker 9: to live and die with the make or miss. That's
- 41:30Speaker 9: how I was raised as a kid. So, to be
- 41:34Speaker 9: honest with you, what I was thinking about is my
- 41:37Speaker 9: sophomore year we played Georgetown. We were up eighteen and
- 41:41Speaker 9: ended up losing the first Big East game. I made
- 41:43Speaker 9: a big turnover late they end up winning the game.
- 41:46Speaker 9: My freshman year, the crowd was about to storm the floor.
- 41:49Speaker 9: Were playing you mass They had Marcus Camby and Lou
- 41:53Speaker 9: Rowe and we wrote fifteen and national TV game. They
- 41:56Speaker 9: were number one team in the country and we end
- 41:58Speaker 9: up losing that game. Uh, helical helicopter. But he made
- 42:02Speaker 9: he made back to back three and I'm as soon
- 42:05Speaker 9: as that second three went in, I'm thinking those two
- 42:08Speaker 9: guys justice. This is a true story. Those two games
- 42:11Speaker 9: flashed through my head as I'm getting the ball from
- 42:14Speaker 9: Brian from from Brian Loewill, because I'm thinking this is
- 42:17Speaker 9: the last game I might play. And so when I
- 42:19Speaker 9: got the ball, you know, uh, one of our transition
- 42:24Speaker 9: players that we that we that we ran a lot
- 42:25Speaker 9: of simple high screens. Uh. I give the credit a
- 42:29Speaker 9: big b because he he switched the screen at at
- 42:32Speaker 9: the last minute. And when I came off the screen,
- 42:35Speaker 9: I actually thought I was going to have a clean
- 42:36Speaker 9: look at it, and uh, because I was reading his man.
- 42:40Speaker 9: But Ruben Patterson's great friend of mine who played in
- 42:43Speaker 9: Bit for lost that Ruben saw the screen and he
- 42:45Speaker 9: came from basically the opposite wing, and when I jumped,
- 42:49Speaker 9: I didn't know he shipped it until later. But when
- 42:53Speaker 9: it was as soon as I jumped, I saw him jump,
- 42:55Speaker 9: and so I just reached up and shot the ball
- 42:57Speaker 9: as high as I could. And when I really he said,
- 43:00Speaker 9: I saw was online and I knew it had a chance.
- 43:02Speaker 9: And like I said, that day, you know, God God
- 43:06Speaker 9: did the rest.
- 43:07Speaker 6: There were many couches burned that day, you know.
- 43:10Speaker 7: That, right.
- 43:12Speaker 9: Listen, if I had a dollar for every time from
- 43:14Speaker 9: where they were, I'll be.
- 43:16Speaker 3: Sill through it for sure, for sure.
- 43:19Speaker 9: And a great story to go along with this. So
- 43:22Speaker 9: my brother, my older brother, got married that day and
- 43:25Speaker 9: I was supposed to be his best man. And obviously
- 43:27Speaker 9: he wasn't expected we was gonna be in the n
- 43:29Speaker 9: c A tournament. So they were in the church and
- 43:32Speaker 9: they were delaying the service, and then back in the
- 43:35Speaker 9: day they didn't you know. He was looking at one
- 43:37Speaker 9: of those little small you know, eight by eight. Yeah,
- 43:40Speaker 9: And when I went up to shoot the shot, it
- 43:43Speaker 9: feez out, And when it came back, they said they
- 43:48Speaker 9: saw Dwayne Lewis carrying me off the floor. I thought
- 43:51Speaker 9: that was a great story.
- 43:53Speaker 6: It was a great story.
- 43:55Speaker 9: It was a it was a great story from great
- 43:56Speaker 9: great day for the for the West House.
- 43:58Speaker 6: It was so great. I remember the play. It was awesome.
- 44:00Speaker 7: But let's fast forward to the TVT since that's that's
- 44:03Speaker 7: you know, what we're what we're here to talk about.
- 44:05Speaker 7: But you know, taking into account first of all, if
- 44:09Speaker 7: you are audience that's not familiar with the TVT, could
- 44:12Speaker 7: you kind of give us a one on one, you know,
- 44:15Speaker 7: just a real basic definition of how the elm ending
- 44:19Speaker 7: works in the TBT.
- 44:21Speaker 9: Yes, I think it's brilliant and and cargn t talk
- 44:26Speaker 9: to a too. Uh in any sport that in any
- 44:30Speaker 9: sport there's a time and so sometimes you can just
- 44:34Speaker 9: milk the clock and it's played the you know, you
- 44:36Speaker 9: can barely just you can let the clock run out
- 44:38Speaker 9: and sometimes you can sneak a win. The elam inning
- 44:41Speaker 9: is beautiful because you know they stopped the clock and
- 44:44Speaker 9: it's no time. You have to actually go score points,
- 44:46Speaker 9: you have to create offense. So it's actually I would
- 44:50Speaker 9: love for the NBA Top It would be interesting if
- 44:53Speaker 9: they would ever try to or college because you know,
- 44:56Speaker 9: and you know, you get in a situation where you
- 44:58Speaker 9: just milk the clock and run for five seconds off
- 45:00Speaker 9: the shot clock of thirty seconds and you just kind
- 45:02Speaker 9: of stall the game out, whereas in the elam ending
- 45:05Speaker 9: you have to continue to play basketball, you had to
- 45:07Speaker 9: continue to score, and it kind of just it makes
- 45:10Speaker 9: it another game in itself. I love it, and it
- 45:15Speaker 9: creates so much drama and because like I said, you
- 45:19Speaker 9: just can't milk the clock. You have to go score.
- 45:21Speaker 9: You got to go make some baskets. You gotta and
- 45:23Speaker 9: it actually it makes you become a better coach because
- 45:26Speaker 9: you have to what's the time.
- 45:27Speaker 6: Frame on that chaired?
- 45:29Speaker 7: I don't mean to interrupt, but what's the timeframe? Is
- 45:31Speaker 7: that the last how many minutes of the game?
- 45:33Speaker 9: But does that take the last four minutes of the game? Yeah,
- 45:38Speaker 9: they stop it, and then I think it's either is
- 45:40Speaker 9: it great seven? I think that it's seven points or
- 45:43Speaker 9: nine points from wherever the leading they had nine points
- 45:46Speaker 9: to wherever who's leading?
- 45:48Speaker 3: Yes?
- 45:49Speaker 9: Right, yes, yes, so yes so Greg he said, if
- 45:52Speaker 9: you're sixty four fifty eight, the winning score will be
- 45:55Speaker 9: seventy three. So then it puts a lot of yeah,
- 45:59Speaker 9: a lot of strategies of all, but it makes you
- 46:02Speaker 9: have to continue to play. So I enjoy, I enjoy.
- 46:06Speaker 5: All Right, I'm going to ask just I think This
- 46:09Speaker 5: will probably maybe be our last question. But one of
- 46:12Speaker 5: the one of the things that I find interesting in
- 46:16Speaker 5: sports now when I when I when I look at
- 46:19Speaker 5: it is it's it seems different to me. It's like,
- 46:23Speaker 5: I don't know if you have you know, and I
- 46:26Speaker 5: think there you know, there are coaches who coach team
- 46:28Speaker 5: work and.
- 46:29Speaker 3: They can maybe find it there.
- 46:31Speaker 5: But typically for me when I'm when I look around
- 46:35Speaker 5: at sports, there's there seems to be this individualized focus
- 46:39Speaker 5: of me. You know, I'm good. I want to go
- 46:43Speaker 5: to college. I want to go to the pros. I
- 46:44Speaker 5: want to go to high school. I want to be
- 46:46Speaker 5: the start the school. Tell me what what you what
- 46:50Speaker 5: you see? And and how do we? How do we?
- 46:53Speaker 3: Is there a way to fix it?
- 46:57Speaker 9: Question? And I've become I never really consider myself an
- 47:02Speaker 9: old school type guy, but the older I get, I
- 47:06Speaker 9: feel like I'm looking. It is hard for me nowadays
- 47:10Speaker 9: to even watch sports because it's it's the level was different.
- 47:15Speaker 9: But I was I was raised you work hard to
- 47:18Speaker 9: get what you get. The entitlement is just it wears
- 47:22Speaker 9: me out. It's different. To answer your question, I don't
- 47:27Speaker 9: know if we can backtrack it. To be honest with you,
- 47:29Speaker 9: because with nil they opened up the wild wild West,
- 47:32Speaker 9: and I mean, I just don't know. If I don't know,
- 47:34Speaker 9: if you can the NCAA has I don't want to.
- 47:38Speaker 9: They've done a bad job, but they've done that. And
- 47:41Speaker 9: this this is coming from a former player who you know,
- 47:45Speaker 9: trust me, I would have loved to have a little money.
- 47:48Speaker 9: But I mean there has to be a cap. There
- 47:51Speaker 9: has to be some type of limitations. I mean, just
- 47:55Speaker 9: from a coaching STANDFO, you can't coach some of these
- 47:57Speaker 9: guys because some of these guys are making more money.
- 47:59Speaker 9: Like it's it's just it's just different. It's different. And
- 48:03Speaker 9: if you if you if you start a freshman, guess
- 48:06Speaker 9: what he might transfer. If you tell a freshman you
- 48:09Speaker 9: you sit behind an experience, y'all, he might transfer. What
- 48:12Speaker 9: do you do than if you don't? Thank if you do,
- 48:15Speaker 9: it's just a different day. And that's why you see
- 48:19Speaker 9: a lot of older coaches getting out because it goes
- 48:23Speaker 9: probably against everything in their DNA of how things are
- 48:28Speaker 9: going now. So yeah, that's that's it's gonna take a
- 48:32Speaker 9: special group of people that can fix it or rectify
- 48:36Speaker 9: because I don't know, if I don't think it will
- 48:40Speaker 9: ever get better, to be honest with you, I.
- 48:41Speaker 5: Don't know how it can for the simple fact that
- 48:44Speaker 5: you know, you've got You've got guys playing college ball
- 48:47Speaker 5: that are making more money than some of the guys
- 48:49Speaker 5: who play professional ball. So I don't even have to
- 48:52Speaker 5: have a dream to play professional I'm good once I
- 48:56Speaker 5: come out of college.
- 48:57Speaker 9: So why would you leave? Like hundred he was, he
- 49:00Speaker 9: played ten years in college? Why would he leave? Yeah,
- 49:03Speaker 9: you know, I I just thought, I'm being like, uh,
- 49:08Speaker 9: you know, a Mondo Bay and I just saw a
- 49:11Speaker 9: kid and sign in Texas Tech three year, five point
- 49:15Speaker 9: one million outside linebacker, and I'm thinking, I mean, you know,
- 49:20Speaker 9: that's to your point, he's making more. He's making more
- 49:24Speaker 9: than some undrafted free agents have signed two or three
- 49:27Speaker 9: years in the NFL. Like it's it's yeah. And And
- 49:31Speaker 9: the thing that it really frustrates me is it affects
- 49:33Speaker 9: the highspool kids trying to come out who uh it
- 49:37Speaker 9: really well, it hit close to home with me when
- 49:40Speaker 9: COVID hit so little Jared was a he was able
- 49:44Speaker 9: to get an extra year. He went to Louisville. My
- 49:46Speaker 9: son Jayden, So would you rather bring in Jaden who's
- 49:49Speaker 9: a senior in high school or Jared who's the fiftieth singers.
- 49:52Speaker 9: So it affected it affected so many high school kids.
- 49:56Speaker 9: And it's you know, it's it's just you know, and
- 49:59Speaker 9: now they're changed situate. Juco kids might not lose a year,
- 50:02Speaker 9: which I mean, I love, but I mean, what do
- 50:04Speaker 9: you what are we doing? You got kids gonna be
- 50:05Speaker 9: twenty six, twenty seven years old still then and guess
- 50:08Speaker 9: what why what? While what I leave if I'm making
- 50:11Speaker 9: some money too, So I just don't know what we're thinking.
- 50:14Speaker 9: I don't I don't understand the adults in the room
- 50:19Speaker 9: that's making those sustains. Right, It's like, you know, they're
- 50:23Speaker 9: what's the what's the worst thing we can do for
- 50:25Speaker 9: college sports? And that's what they're doing. And once again,
- 50:28Speaker 9: I played college sports and wish I had a little money,
- 50:31Speaker 9: But once again, you don't. I mean, you know, these guys,
- 50:34Speaker 9: it's crazy because this is.
- 50:36Speaker 3: Not a little bit of money. This is this is
- 50:38Speaker 3: life changing money.
- 50:39Speaker 9: Crazy money. Yeah, and I'm gonna go a step bigger,
- 50:43Speaker 9: life changing money. And I'm okay. I can see the
- 50:47Speaker 9: guys who are all league I'm talking about and I
- 50:49Speaker 9: hate to use the word bumps, but like I'm talking
- 50:52Speaker 9: about average guys.
- 50:53Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, so.
- 50:55Speaker 9: I mean I look you look at it. I'm like,
- 50:57Speaker 9: this guy's making what I'm thinking, this guy average four
- 51:00Speaker 9: points last year. This guy had fifteen catches last year.
- 51:03Speaker 8: Like what are we talk?
- 51:05Speaker 9: Like, what are we doing? It's bastling.
- 51:08Speaker 5: It's really pay off of potential. It's it's payoff for potential.
- 51:11Speaker 9: Really, yes, and Michael George said it a long time.
- 51:14Speaker 9: You know these you're giving these guys stuff that they
- 51:18Speaker 9: haven't earned it, you know they I mean like the
- 51:20Speaker 9: kid for Tennessee, I think he's a pretty good quarterback. Okay,
- 51:24Speaker 9: we I mean he's young, but like he's turning down
- 51:28Speaker 9: you know, like, so what are we doing? He's turned
- 51:30Speaker 9: down two or three million because he's gonna get four millions,
- 51:34Speaker 9: Like what are we doing? Like you know what enough
- 51:36Speaker 9: is enough? Like put a put a cap on it
- 51:39Speaker 9: so that these coaches can actually coach, just don't hold accountable.
- 51:42Speaker 9: Like right, it's just the while you it's the wild
- 51:46Speaker 9: wild West, and it's sad because yes it was slightly broken,
- 51:50Speaker 9: but it wasn't as broke as we made it, true.
- 51:53Speaker 3: Right, coach.
- 51:54Speaker 11: This is producer Matt thinking about kind of this nil
- 51:58Speaker 11: stuff and sort of going back to the team b T.
- 52:00Speaker 11: Do you do you think that something like the TVT
- 52:03Speaker 11: Tournament do you think that is kind of a sort
- 52:07Speaker 11: of a testament to getting back to the roots of
- 52:11Speaker 11: sports and sort of why people play the game?
- 52:16Speaker 9: Right? I love it and that that's a great question.
- 52:18Speaker 9: And I think the tv T does a great job
- 52:20Speaker 9: of Listen, we're going to the park, you go play,
- 52:23Speaker 9: You bring your crew. I bring my crew and we went.
- 52:25Speaker 9: You know that that's that's the type of mentality that
- 52:28Speaker 9: it brings. Uh. And you win, you advance, you lose,
- 52:32Speaker 9: you go home, and if you win six, you win
- 52:34Speaker 9: a prize. You know. So I love it because it
- 52:39Speaker 9: makes it It makes it like back to childhood, you know,
- 52:41Speaker 9: like we go, we go hoop and Jared West likes
- 52:45Speaker 9: to be shooting. So yeah, I love the concept of it.
- 52:49Speaker 5: All Right, all right, well man, we'll let you get
- 52:52Speaker 5: We know you're busy. We'll let you get back to
- 52:54Speaker 5: what you're doing. And we appreciate you giving us your time.
- 52:58Speaker 6: Thanks Jared so much, appreciate it. Good luck, all right.
- 53:03Speaker 5: Bye bye, all right, ladies and gentlemen. Oh Lisa, yes
- 53:09Speaker 5: that was good, Okay.
- 53:11Speaker 6: Thank you.
- 53:13Speaker 3: Well, I got to give you the you brought him.
- 53:15Speaker 3: You got both of them. More is he groveling at you?
- 53:21Speaker 6: Please write this down? Would you please note it somewhere.
- 53:24Speaker 3: I'll tell you what. I'll even I was gonna say.
- 53:26Speaker 6: Video recorded. I want to listen to it over and now.
- 53:28Speaker 5: I'll broadcast it even well if you if you're got
- 53:32Speaker 5: to do that, I need to change my mind.
- 53:33Speaker 3: At least you got to step it up. No, that
- 53:37Speaker 3: was no.
- 53:38Speaker 5: Those those two conversations were really really important. And I
- 53:42Speaker 5: think too for parents, for kids who who who should
- 53:48Speaker 5: listen to this and and hear some of this conversation
- 53:51Speaker 5: because I think it's really valuable and important for them
- 53:55Speaker 5: to understand some of the things that were said tonight.
- 53:58Speaker 7: And once again, and I'll go back to it's a
- 54:01Speaker 7: reoccurring theme with our guests. I mean that we all
- 54:04Speaker 7: seem to view these these changes we're all, you know,
- 54:08Speaker 7: and like like Jared said, I think it's because we're
- 54:10Speaker 7: all becoming older and our values become different. Because when
- 54:13Speaker 7: you're younger, you know things, things are, your lifestyles different,
- 54:16Speaker 7: you're you know, your.
- 54:18Speaker 6: Way of looking at things.
- 54:19Speaker 7: The older you get, the more you see that you
- 54:21Speaker 7: know what those older people in our lives, trying to
- 54:23Speaker 7: give us, instilling us these values. They were right after all,
- 54:26Speaker 7: even at the time we thought they weren't right.
- 54:29Speaker 11: I think it's a testament to that. You know, you
- 54:31Speaker 11: don't always have to have a big end game for sports.
- 54:33Speaker 11: I mean, you may make it to college, you may
- 54:35Speaker 11: make it to the pros, you might not. But it
- 54:37Speaker 11: doesn't mean that you have to stop playing just because
- 54:40Speaker 11: you didn't reach that big dream.
- 54:42Speaker 3: You know. Sports is a lifestyle basically. Yeah, And I.
- 54:46Speaker 5: Think too you hear from some of these guys whose
- 54:50Speaker 5: careers were great but ended at a certain point and
- 54:54Speaker 5: get into coaching, and what do they do. They coach
- 54:57Speaker 5: what they were coached, you know, and and they're discipline
- 55:01Speaker 5: and they're all of those kinds of things. They know
- 55:05Speaker 5: that's what needs to be there in order for you
- 55:08Speaker 5: to have any kind of measure of success, of success.
- 55:11Speaker 6: They go back to their grassroots for sure.
- 55:13Speaker 3: Yes, for sure.
- 55:14Speaker 7: And if you haven't been to the TVT, I highly
- 55:17Speaker 7: recommend it, even if you're not a huge basketball fan.
- 55:20Speaker 6: It is exciting, it is fun. The elam ending is amazing.
- 55:24Speaker 7: So you know, if you're you're in the audience and
- 55:26Speaker 7: you're kind of on the fence about it.
- 55:27Speaker 6: Go check it out. It's really fun.
- 55:29Speaker 5: Well, ladies and gentlemen, we'll get out of here today
- 55:32Speaker 5: and we will be back again soon
