Solon the Lawgiver: Athens' First Reformer and the Birth of Democracy
In this episode, Lucas and Luna explore the life and reforms of Solon, the Athenian statesman and poet who laid the foundations for democracy. Learn about the seisachtheia (debt cancellation), the division of citizens into four property classes (pentakosiomedimnoi, hippeis, zeugitai, thetes), and the creation of the Boule of 400. Discover how Solon's poetry reveals his motivations and his famous encounter with King Croesus. Though his reforms were later overturned by tyrants, Solon's legacy as the father of Athenian democracy endures.
