- Lucas: Okay Luna, welcome back to Learn Cantonese with Fexingo. Episode one forty-six. Luna: Hey Lucas! Ready to learn some more Cantonese. Lucas: Absolutely. Last time we talked about shapes, remember? Circle and square. Luna: Yep.圓形 and 方形. I still remember those. Lucas: Good. Today let's talk about feelings. How you feel. Luna: Oh like happy, sad, that kind of thing? Lucas: Exactly. We'll start with two common ones: happy and tired. Luna: Okay. Happy first. How do I say 'I'm happy'? Lucas: Say 我好開心. Listen: 我 好 開 心. 我好開心. Luna: 我好開心. That sounds nice. Lucas: You got it. 我 means I, 好 means very, 開心 means happy. So 我好開心 means I'm very happy. Luna: Oh so it's actually 'I very happy'. Lucas: Exactly. In Cantonese you don't need a verb like 'am'. You just say 我好開心. Luna: So if I'm just a little happy, can I just say 我開心? Lucas: Yes. 我開心 means I'm happy. But 我好開心 is more common. It's like saying 'I'm really happy'. Luna: Got it. 我好開心. Now what about tired? Lucas: Tired is 攰. Say 我好攰. 我 好 攰. Luna: 我好攰. That feels a bit heavy. 我好攰. Lucas: Yeah, it's a strong word. 我 好 攰. You can also say 我有啲攰, which means I'm a bit tired. Luna: 有啲攰. Like 'a little tired'? Lucas: Right. 有啲 means 'a bit' or 'a little'. So 我有啲攰. Luna: OK. 我有啲攰. That's useful after a long day. Lucas: Exactly. Now let's practice a question. How would you ask someone 'Are you happy?' Luna: Hmm. 你開心? Or... 你開唔開心? Lucas: Oh, you're good! 你開唔開心 is perfect. That means 'Are you happy?' Luna: Because 開唔開心 is the a not a form, right? Lucas: Right. You repeat the first syllable. 開唔開心. Yes-no question. Luna: So if someone asks me 你開唔開心, I can say 我好開心. Lucas: Exactly. Or 我唔開心 if you're not happy. Luna: 唔開心 means not happy. 唔 is the negation. Lucas: Right. 唔開心. But today we focus on happy and tired. Let's do a quick scene. Luna: Okay, go ahead. Lucas: Imagine we just finished a long walk in the park. I ask you: 你開唔開心? Luna: 我好開心! But I'm also a bit tired. 我有啲攰. Lucas: Perfect. 我好開心 and 我有啲攰. That's natural. Luna: Yeah, it feels good to express feelings. Lucas: You know, if Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with Cantonese, and you appreciate that we keep this show ad-free, you can support us at buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Lucas: Notice Luna added 呀 at the end. That makes it sound more friendly. Luna: Oh, 我好開心呀. Like adding a soft tone. Lucas: Right. Now can you say 'Are you a bit tired?' in Cantonese? Luna: 你有冇啲攰? Lucas: Yes! 你有冇啲攰. 有冇 means 'have or not have'. So 'do you have a little tiredness?' Luna: That's clever. 有冇啲攰. Lucas: Let's put it all together. I'll ask you: 你開唔開心? Luna: 我好開心. 你有冇啲攰? Lucas: 我有啲攰. 但係我好開心. That means 'I'm a bit tired, but I'm very happy.' Luna: Oh, 但係 is 'but'. So 我有啲攰,但係我好開心. Lucas: Perfect. You're picking it up fast. Luna: Thanks. So today we learned 我好開心, 我好攰, 你開唔開心, and 你有冇啲攰. Lucas: Right. Practice these with your friends. Ask them 你開唔開心 today. Luna: I will. See you next time, listeners. Keep practicing! Lucas: Thanks for joining us on Learn Cantonese with Fexingo. Bye!
