- 0:02In life, everybody loves a good with dumps story.
- 0:06Everyone wants to see the person who was once written off and
- 0:12drawn to the side find a way to redeem themselves and
- 0:18essentially have like a second chance at life.
- 0:24But many have ultimately tried that comeback route.
- 0:29They may have succeeded, while others unfortunately tried but
- 0:35completely fell on their face. But in the case of now a former
- 0:46NBA now making a comeback. NBA player who was the former
- 0:53number one pick several years ago, whose career looked like to
- 0:58be a Hall of Fame arc, only to be derailed by injuries.
- 1:03An infamous moment, mounting criticisms about his game, his
- 1:09mentality and attitude, and a year away from the sport that
- 1:15many thought that he didn't really put much love into.
- 1:20This is how Ben Simmons is making not only a comeback this
- 1:24year after a year off, but how he could have an opportunity to
- 1:30rewrite the narrative that was already written after a series
- 1:36of his own mishaps, but has an opportunity to rewrite his own
- 1:43story. Ben Simmons, of course, was
- 1:48supposed to be among the next group of players when he came
- 1:53out in 2016 as the number one award pick by Philadelphia.
- 1:59Many wrote this upside. Some compare them to LeBron.
- 2:03Some compare them to even generations prior a Magic
- 2:07Johnson because of his ability to be a triple threat force,
- 2:12getting triple double S, making right plays and seemingly
- 2:16getting his teammates involved and work.
- 2:20His first couple years, it looked like he was actually
- 2:25going to be on that Hall of Fame mark 3 All Star selections in
- 2:30the All NBA nominee several times.
- 2:35Couple times, for instance, the Defensive Player of the year
- 2:39voting in the top three, and it just seemed like the road to
- 2:45possibility for Simmons was going to be magnificent.
- 2:51But like with any young player coming into their own in the
- 2:55NBA, at least those who try to establish themselves pretty
- 3:01early, you're going to have your share of criticism.
- 3:05Every athlete who eventually became great, and Simmons was
- 3:11going to be no exception. One of the problems that Simmons
- 3:16had even before he came into the league was that some people
- 3:21questioned his jump shot. Many had encouraged him even
- 3:25when he got into the NBA to work on his shooting more knowingly,
- 3:32just develop a mid range game that they felt that was one of
- 3:36his biggest areas of weaknesses, that he could just improve over
- 3:41time and at least be a capable shooting track.
- 3:46Even the great Stephen A Smith said a couple times that Ben
- 3:50Simmons had his siblings of a jump shot.
- 3:53He could be the next LeBron James.
- 3:55Even Kobe Bryant, God bless his soul, had his own concerns that
- 4:00if Simmons didn't work on his game as far as shooting, he
- 4:04didn't think he was going to have a long career.
- 4:08Now, that's kind of, in a way, a teaser for what's ahead.
- 4:13But the other thing that ultimately was another problem
- 4:18that people questioned about Simmons was his commitment to
- 4:22the game and his passion. You see, even when he was at
- 4:27LSU, he had a pension, if you will, for not necessarily
- 4:34getting up for every game. And look, I get it.
- 4:37You know, when you have goals to essentially make it to the
- 4:41professional level in sports, you don't really go all in on
- 4:48college, you know, whether it's in class or even at times
- 4:53against stiff competition. But it's kind of like in this
- 4:58sense, he would get up for, you know, the important games more
- 5:03or less like the conference games per SE.
- 5:07But when they would go up against kind of like lots of
- 5:12competition, it's just like, I see no reason really to kind of
- 5:19get motivated. But regardless, though, people
- 5:23could not pass up on this upside in potential.
- 5:27And for the Philadelphia 76ers, who were still going through the
- 5:30Trust the Process error, they needed somebody to be the
- 5:40centerpiece of it all. Now they had drafted Joe Allenby
- 5:432 years earlier with the 3rd pick, but at that point he was
- 5:48about to miss his second straight season because of knee
- 5:53problems that he had while in Kansas.
- 5:57So the Sixers, while NB was still recovering, looked to him
- 6:01to be the guy along with NB for the future.
- 6:06Now granted Simmons as the number one pick, you would think
- 6:11that he had it all, that his first couple years he had
- 6:17established himself as a player with not only what he
- 6:21accomplished, but you would say that his career was, as I
- 6:26mentioned, at the top Hall of Fame art type, right?
- 6:34Let's Fast forward to game seven in the 2021 Eastern Conference
- 6:40Semifinals, where one mishap of decision making changed
- 6:49everything. It was game seven in
- 6:54Philadelphia. The young, aggressive Atlanta
- 6:57Hawks, led by superstar Trey Young, had forced the 7th game
- 7:02in Philadelphia against the Sixers team that many thought
- 7:05was probably the best team of that trust the Process ever.
- 7:14It was late in the game in the fourth quarter when Philadelphia
- 7:18had an opportunity to tie the game.
- 7:23Ben Simmons was driving to the basket and it looked like when
- 7:27Daniel Gallinari was defending him, Simmons had a clear cut
- 7:33laying to the basket and you thought, OK, you're easy, layup
- 7:37or dunk, right? And then came the next second,
- 7:44Trey Young came in as the health defender and instead of Simmons
- 7:50laying in or Duncan 'cause he had like a couple inch height
- 7:54difference over Young, he decided to pass it over to
- 7:59Matisse Dybo who immediately got fouled, sending Dybo to the free
- 8:04throw line. That one laps moment in decision
- 8:13essentially became the crux of Ben Simmons as a player and
- 8:22ultimately in the big picture at Len was able to not only hold on
- 8:29for the game seven win, but they advanced the Eastern Conference
- 8:32finals against Milwaukee and they sent Philadelphia once
- 8:37again home in the second round. Now everyone remembers how that
- 8:46one my fog of Simmons decision. People look at that as the
- 8:52reason why Philadelphia lost that game.
- 8:57And even though a couple years have passed by since then, there
- 9:02were a lot of things that went wrong for Philadelphia in that
- 9:06entire game that didn't just necessarily fall on Simon's lap
- 9:13moment. You see Doc Rivers and if you
- 9:17know me, I have never been a fan of his because of his post
- 9:22season, you know, failures after weaving Boston.
- 9:26He essentially got out coached by Nick McMillan.
- 9:30See, whatever Rivers tried to do, McMillan immediately made
- 9:36adjustments. Joel and B had a really poor
- 9:40shooting, right? Tobias Harris, I don't even was
- 9:43there at the time. I don't think he even made one
- 9:46single basket that whole game. And of course, you know, other
- 9:52players didn't do their part as well.
- 9:55But my only question was as far as the preliminaries of that
- 9:59game, even with MB struggles and turning the ball over, you know,
- 10:05like crucial moments, why didn't Doc Rivers call for MB to get
- 10:10the ball a little more? Why didn't MB ask for it?
- 10:15Why couldn't the 76ers had timely shots against that win?
- 10:21See, everybody wants to, and maybe rightfully so, point to
- 10:26Simmons. You know, Gaff at that moment as
- 10:30the turning point, which I'll get into in a second of his
- 10:35career of that game. But to me, there was so many
- 10:39things that went wrong for Philadelphia that it never
- 10:43should have came down to that one lapse moment for Simmons.
- 10:48That if that was really Philadelphia's best team from
- 10:51top to bottom, they should have won that game against Atlanta.
- 10:57And who knows what could have happened if they had went up
- 11:00against Milwaukee in the conference.
- 11:02Fine. And this is where the real crux
- 11:08of everything as far as this topic starts to take shape.
- 11:14And it was the century beginning at the end of not only Ben
- 11:18Simmons time in Philadelphia, but also of his career.
- 11:26Immediately after the game, Rivers and B point the finger at
- 11:32Simmons. They essentially drew him under
- 11:36the bus, saying he could have been more aggressive in that
- 11:40moment and could've at least had an opportunity to score when it
- 11:49was right there for him. To me, when you had two people
- 11:55that had just as large of a part, if not more of why they
- 12:01lost that game. But instead of piling on someone
- 12:06else, what do you think that actually says about, you know,
- 12:10the true aforementioned? And then, of course, you know,
- 12:14the media onslaught that followed for weeks and months
- 12:17after was swelling. Many accused Simmons of not
- 12:24stepping up in the moment. Many said that he was too scared
- 12:28to be aggressive. And many a century said that he
- 12:36didn't have what it takes to essentially be the guy when
- 12:41Philadelphia needed to be. I mean, for weeks and months on,
- 12:46then it just seemed like it was endless scrutiny on to this guy.
- 12:54And then of course, you know, the offseason that followed and
- 12:57going to train camp the next year didn't make things any
- 13:01better. After essentially in an off
- 13:05season of fashion and criticism, Simmons did not report to
- 13:11Philadelphia's training camp when it rolled around around mid
- 13:16to late September that he was dealing with mental health
- 13:21issues. And I again, I want to be clear
- 13:26on this part as someone who has dealt with serious mental health
- 13:31issues as the main people, I want to be clear, if you are
- 13:36really suffering from seriousness of it, please go get
- 13:42help today. But as far as Ben Simmons, many
- 13:46people saw him use that really as an excuse to not really own
- 13:53up to what happened on his end against that land of the year
- 13:57before. Now, whether or not that was a
- 14:00fair criticism of him, you know, a couple years away, I can
- 14:05actually now say it depends on who you really ask.
- 14:10But maybe he was kind of overwhelmed by the criticism and
- 14:17the scrutiny that he was getting, which I can understand
- 14:20in some ways. What I will not have sympathy
- 14:24for as far as him was the fact that if it was true he was using
- 14:29that as an excuse, then there's nothing to talk about.
- 14:37So as a resolve all that. Simmons did not report to train
- 14:41camp, at least initially. He did not want any part of
- 14:47Philadelphia because he felt in his mind that the organization
- 14:52turned on him and so he was getting fined until he decided
- 15:01to come back one day and essentially became at this point
- 15:05of roof. He didn't talk to any of his
- 15:07teammates, then talk to Doc Rivers or Dale Moore, who was
- 15:12there at the time as AGM. One thing led to another and at
- 15:19a certain point it just became too unbearable to wear.
- 15:26When the opportunity came around for him, the for Delmore, I'm
- 15:31sorry to trade Simmons out of Philadelphia, he saw the first
- 15:35opening he was able to take. The problem was his trade value
- 15:41because of all the things I mentioned weren't really at a
- 15:44high point that any team, at least, you know, the top teams
- 15:51were gonna be interested. Fortunately, the Brooklyn Nets
- 15:55stepped in and were willing to take Simmons off Philadelphia's
- 16:00hands, and they ended up training for him and giving up
- 16:04James Harden in the process. So you would think that Simmons
- 16:11time in Philadelphia was a that you know, what looked like to be
- 16:17promising and you know, as far as a potential Hall of Fame arc
- 16:24and everything that came after, you would think that that would
- 16:27be the end, right, that he would be in Brooklyn.
- 16:30You know, like I say, rebuilding team that he can kind of fit the
- 16:33mold with Everything would be fine, right, Rock in Brooklyn.
- 16:43Let's just say it didn't really quite work out again, whether it
- 16:50was do the injuries again supposedly with his back or
- 16:55again some people still holding on to what led to his time in
- 17:01Philadelphia coming to the end and obviously the unwillingness
- 17:08to further develop his game even further.
- 17:13As far as shooting wise, Simmons rarely saw the floor, but of
- 17:18course, his 10 year with the Nets is only defined when he
- 17:23went back to Philadelphia for one game.
- 17:26There, a ball the basketball had rolled out of bounds onto the
- 17:32Brooklyn Nets side. And guess where the ball just
- 17:36happened to land on? You guessed.
- 17:42And of course, the fans in Philadelphia, you know how
- 17:46passionate they are, boy. And it was only for a few
- 17:52seconds, but still, you know how that if you hadn't seen it
- 17:56already. So Long story short, Simmons
- 18:02time with Brooklyn pretty much amount to nothing.
- 18:05And then of course, he tried one more, I guess opportunity with
- 18:10the Clippers or Portland. It was one of the two teams, but
- 18:16pretty much the same thing as Brooklyn.
- 18:18Nothing really materialized. And this past season when no
- 18:24team picked him up, he why I initially thought was a
- 18:30retirement. He walked away, you know, and
- 18:36why I initially thought it was a retirement because he probably
- 18:39thought to himself, you know, I really don't need basketball
- 18:43anymore. I already got my money.
- 18:46Nothing else really matters to me.
- 18:48So I'm just going to kind of disappear and do whatever I
- 18:52want. And that's why I initially
- 18:56thought, you know, this past season when no team picked them
- 18:59up as like, well, maybe that is unfortunately how Benson's
- 19:06career will end. And then of course, came this
- 19:12morning. So from Sean Suraya of ESPN, at
- 19:18first I had to click on the ESPN app just to even make sure this
- 19:24was with Jed. But when I found out that Ben
- 19:27Simmons is not only coming back to the NBA, but it's plain to
- 19:32sign a one year deal with Sacramento, I was actually
- 19:38surprised. Because not only for the fact
- 19:43that any team would actually want to take a flyer on him at
- 19:47this point, but it's the fact that even after a year off
- 19:52whatever supposedly time he needed to re evaluate things, it
- 20:00apparently worked. Because after a year away, he is
- 20:05now back in the NBA with a possibility.
- 20:09Of maybe rewriting a career that many had a century written of
- 20:15him when he didn't play last season.
- 20:19And look for all of the negative things, the criticism, scrutiny
- 20:27and mounting level of disappointment that Simmons had
- 20:34when his subsequent career was starting to decline after that
- 20:38infamous moment against that when a couple years ago he did
- 20:45deserve the criticism. I mean, let's just be real
- 20:49honest here, OK? But you know what?
- 20:55We all love a good redemption org in the redemption story
- 20:59period. So you know what?
- 21:01I could easily continue to bash, you know how Simmons career, you
- 21:09know, it's more of like a what if.
- 21:11But you know what, based on this news today from shops, I'm not
- 21:16ready to go there yet because you know what, let's just show
- 21:23this out. If this is in fact, you know,
- 21:27Ben Simmons, why not come back and try a century, not only
- 21:34really trying to not prove anything to anybody, but to
- 21:38prove to himself that, you know what?
- 21:41Could I have handled things differently, you know, at the
- 21:44end of my time in Philadelphia? Or were there a lot of things
- 21:48that, you know, I was too immature, stubborn and not
- 21:54willing to acknowledge really about my whole career and even
- 21:58my mind selling things. I'm sure those were probably the
- 22:02two most important things that was at the forefront for him
- 22:06when he was probably thinking, should I even consider coming
- 22:09back? But you know what, if he stays
- 22:14on with Sacramento the whole season and maybe he not even
- 22:18having to be a All Star caliber player, if he could just show
- 22:26something to a century, be a competitive person once again
- 22:33and maybe help A-Team that's going through a rebuild win
- 22:38their share of games, I will be more than happy for him.
- 22:43And look, I think pretty much in a sports society we are quick to
- 22:48write off those who never amount to anything or have promise at
- 22:53one point of actually being something like Hall of Fame
- 22:56asks. But whether it was do the
- 22:58injuries, off the field issues or the mentality, it never came
- 23:03to suffice for many of them. I am sincerely hoping that for
- 23:08Ben Simmons, this is not the end.
- 23:12And look, whether or not this comeback arc with Sacramento is
- 23:17going to amount to anything, to be quite honest with you, I
- 23:20cannot sit here and say if it will, but I think it shows a
- 23:24level of humidity, honesty within himself and really
- 23:32self-awareness that he's willing to at least give it one more
- 23:38shot. In that part I can actually
- 23:41respect because as I mentioned, it's so easy for a rising
- 23:45athlete to essentially fall, you know, when it looked like they
- 23:49were on their way. But then a lot of things happen.
- 23:53I'm hoping that Ben Simmons has not only learned the error of
- 23:58how he could have handled things more differently, but now I
- 24:02guess in the 2nd chapter that the book's not closed on him,
- 24:08that he can still have a great career in his second go around
- 24:14and that maybe it's not over for him.
- 24:17I am definitely ruling for him in that regard.
