- 0:00Speaker 1: He's in that sweatshirt. Man, does he love that sweatshirt.
- 0:02Speaker 2: It looks very cozy. I don't play.
- 0:04Speaker 1: I know, and it's Disney, and I know you love Disney,
- 0:06Speaker 1: But that dude rocks that sweatshirt almost every podcast.
- 0:11Speaker 2: At least some times. I imagine he goes to that sweater.
- 0:14Speaker 1: That is his go to. If people saw a video
- 0:17Speaker 1: of this podcast, you well, they would see that we
- 0:21Speaker 1: change our outfits. Yes, but Donald is almost always in
- 0:24Speaker 1: a Mickey Mouse hoodie.
- 0:26Speaker 3: I'm gonna call it his podcasting sweater from now on. Yeah,
- 0:29Speaker 3: it has cute little ears on the top of it.
- 0:31Speaker 1: You know, mister Rogers changes into his outfit of each show.
- 0:35Speaker 1: Donald grabs his Mickey Mouse hoodie with the hood and
- 0:40Speaker 1: for the audience who's listening, the hoodie has little ears
- 0:42Speaker 1: on it, so it's very cute.
- 0:45Speaker 2: It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Yeah. I wonder if he sings that as he puts
- 0:50Speaker 1: on his Mickey Mouse hoodie before.
- 0:53Speaker 3: Each show, it changes from his loafers to his inside shoes.
- 0:57Speaker 1: Yeah, he puts He takes off his Jordan fores and
- 1:01Speaker 1: puts on some uggs.
- 1:06Speaker 4: Oh my god, what are the things we are allowed
- 1:10Speaker 4: to talk about now.
- 1:11Speaker 1: I don't even know what to do. There's so much
- 1:13Speaker 1: are you recording? Yeah, I got so much to say
- 1:16Speaker 1: to you don't even know where to begin.
- 1:18Speaker 4: Yo, dude, Like, what are we allowed to talk about?
- 1:22Speaker 1: You can talk about, Well, you as just a SAG
- 1:25Speaker 1: member can't really talk about jack shit. I, as a
- 1:29Speaker 1: Writer's Guild member, can talk about how good of the
- 1:31Speaker 1: movie A Good Person is and everyone should check it out.
- 1:34Speaker 1: If they haven't got to see it, you should, as
- 1:39Speaker 1: I want been meaning to tell people forever I could,
- 1:41Speaker 1: I couldn't. It's on airplanes, it's on it's everywhere now,
- 1:45Speaker 1: and please check it out if you happen to miss
- 1:47Speaker 1: A Good Person. I have my lips have been duct taped.
- 1:50Speaker 1: As a good member of my guild, right, but as
- 1:53Speaker 1: the writer director, I am now allowed to tell you
- 1:56Speaker 1: to please check out A Good Person. You can rent
- 1:58Speaker 1: it everywhere. It's really good. If you want a good
- 2:00Speaker 1: cry on an airplane, which is the best place to
- 2:02Speaker 1: cry to a movie, I highly recommend it. Well, it's sorry, Donald,
- 2:05Speaker 1: you're not allowed. Well, you can comment on the writing
- 2:08Speaker 1: of it, Donald, I think right, I.
- 2:09Speaker 4: Can say I can say that it is well written,
- 2:13Speaker 4: thank you well directed, Thank.
- 2:15Speaker 1: You sir, thank you. I love you, I miss you.
- 2:18Speaker 4: I miss you too.
- 2:18Speaker 1: I wish I could tell you a scrappiness.
- 2:21Speaker 4: Yeah, you know what. This weekend, I coached my son
- 2:24Speaker 4: to AH championship at Grassroots sixty five at a Grassroo
- 2:33Speaker 4: three sixty five championship and Anaheim and I yelled a lot.
- 2:39Speaker 4: I did a lot of yelling.
- 2:40Speaker 1: But they won, and you were so stoked and it
- 2:42Speaker 1: was your dream come true.
- 2:44Speaker 4: They won. He had a good championship game, which is
- 2:47Speaker 4: great because the week started off a little iffity dippity,
- 2:52Speaker 4: you know for him, and he played through it. And
- 2:54Speaker 4: it was hard to coach him as a dad and
- 2:58Speaker 4: get him to play through it because you know, I
- 3:02Speaker 4: want to be sensitive to it. But I also got
- 3:04Speaker 4: to play coach as well.
- 3:07Speaker 1: But you want me too hard on him because my
- 3:09Speaker 1: dad was a little too hard on my sister in
- 3:10Speaker 1: swimming and she eventually was like fuck this, I'm out.
- 3:13Speaker 4: Well, the great thing is that he loves it and
- 3:17Speaker 4: so when I push him, it motivates him.
- 3:21Speaker 2: Well, were you stats, Donald?
- 3:22Speaker 4: His stats weren't great this weekend. So here's the thing.
- 3:25Speaker 4: He's been having really good basketball tournaments at this spot
- 3:30Speaker 4: where we go because he goes there a lot. He
- 3:32Speaker 4: plays on the As of right now, they're the number
- 3:34Speaker 4: one team in the West Coast region and they're ranked
- 3:39Speaker 4: like eight or something like that in the nation as
- 3:43Speaker 4: far as his age group goes now the Inglewood guard Dogs, right,
- 3:46Speaker 4: but they didn't play this weekend. He played with his
- 3:48Speaker 4: Sports Academy team, which is another team that's really good.
- 3:52Speaker 4: It's an eleven U team and he's playing up with
- 3:54Speaker 4: that one, and they went down there and they won
- 3:58Speaker 4: the gold Chip. But his stats were just all right,
- 4:01Speaker 4: and he thought he was going to go down there
- 4:02Speaker 4: and do like, you know, because it was his home turf.
- 4:05Speaker 4: He thought he was going to go down there and
- 4:06Speaker 4: shake him, bake and everything like that. But it's a
- 4:09Speaker 4: team game and he couldn't do that, and so, you know,
- 4:12Speaker 4: it was just it was a rough weekend for him.
- 4:14Speaker 1: But he's still you want.
- 4:16Speaker 4: He turned up in the finals, and I'm proud of him.
- 4:19Speaker 4: I'm proud of him, and I'm proud of the boys.
- 4:20Speaker 1: I hope if I have a kid there is into
- 4:22Speaker 1: the thing I'm into as your son is with yours.
- 4:25Speaker 4: Well, that'd be really awesome if you had a kid
- 4:27Speaker 4: who was in a musical theater.
- 4:28Speaker 1: Yeah, oh my god. If I had a kid that
- 4:30Speaker 1: loves going to musicals and he was like, Dad, gotta
- 4:32Speaker 1: see Dad, we gotta go see Merrily. We roll along
- 4:35Speaker 1: on Broadway. It's fucking amazing. You know, it's you know,
- 4:38Speaker 1: Jonathan Groffson, and we gotta go. I'd be like, I
- 4:40Speaker 1: love your son, Dad. It's a Sonheim play and the
- 4:47Speaker 1: story actually goes backwards in time. Shut up, son.
- 4:55Speaker 4: I really can't talk about anything else.
- 4:57Speaker 1: You can't, as a SAG member talk about promote any
- 5:01Speaker 1: anything that you're enjoying watching. No, no, sorry, it'll be
- 5:05Speaker 1: over soon. I think everyone seems to think it's gonna
- 5:07Speaker 1: it's gonna end soon. I had the over on all
- 5:10Speaker 1: of this. That's a sports betting term. Everyone. I really thought, good,
- 5:14Speaker 1: thank you, thank you, my Google day. I thought this
- 5:16Speaker 1: was going to go to the New Year. And I'm
- 5:18Speaker 1: so happy that the Guild got everything they wanted and
- 5:21Speaker 1: that they have a deal. And I think SAG is
- 5:23Speaker 1: gonna follow soon. And Donald really it would be to
- 5:27Speaker 1: be able to plug all his Star Wars shows.
- 5:29Speaker 4: It would go You could talk about it. Aren't you
- 5:31Speaker 4: allowed to talk about it?
- 5:32Speaker 1: I'm sure you want to talk about a Shoka, but
- 5:34Speaker 1: I don't watch it and I don't know anything about it.
- 5:36Speaker 4: What you call it?
- 5:37Speaker 1: What is it a shoka?
- 5:39Speaker 4: Lest for me? I can't say, but you can.
- 5:41Speaker 1: See the title. What's it called?
- 5:44Speaker 4: Asa?
- 5:45Speaker 1: I'm sorry, I don't watch Ahsoka. By the way, I
- 5:47Speaker 1: gotta say something. Do you? You don't watch Black Mirror?
- 5:49Speaker 5: Right?
- 5:49Speaker 1: You don't watch anything I send you?
- 5:51Speaker 4: Do you so frustratedly watched dog? Listen?
- 5:54Speaker 1: Man, listen if I What frustrates me so much amongst
- 5:57Speaker 1: the many things of you being my best friend is
- 6:00Speaker 1: that when there's things I know that you will love, like,
- 6:02Speaker 1: oh my god, this is so donald. He will love
- 6:04Speaker 1: this like The Boys the show, for example.
- 6:06Speaker 4: Dude, you're so geeked right now? Hold on, cut the bullshit,
- 6:10Speaker 4: because this is where we're going with it. Did you
- 6:11Speaker 4: watch the Black Mirror thing?
- 6:13Speaker 5: No?
- 6:13Speaker 4: Did you watch the Boys thing?
- 6:15Speaker 1: The GENV thingug me?
- 6:17Speaker 4: Yeah, motherfucker, I know where this is going.
- 6:19Speaker 1: I know where this is going, Joel, did you see it?
- 6:22Speaker 4: No?
- 6:22Speaker 3: It's my on my next to watch list. I'm so excited.
- 6:24Speaker 3: I've heard nothing but great thing.
- 6:25Speaker 4: You can't say it's on your next to watch list? Joelle,
- 6:29Speaker 4: I'm not a member.
- 6:29Speaker 1: She's not a member of saying, oh my god, you
- 6:32Speaker 1: guys are killing me. Right, so you guys, you gotta watch.
- 6:34Speaker 1: If you love the Boys, you gotta watch gen G
- 6:36Speaker 1: It's really good. It's kind of like X men ish
- 6:39Speaker 1: to the boys, Like it's about like the young kids
- 6:42Speaker 1: that are trained to be the new superheroes.
- 6:44Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 6:44Speaker 1: So, any I'm watching the show gen V and they like,
- 6:46Speaker 1: give me the shout out. This girl is like, yeah,
- 6:48Speaker 1: I got a part in a new show. It's a Marvel.
- 6:50Speaker 1: It's basically like a Marvel. It's like a what's that show?
- 6:53Speaker 1: But the sitcom is the Marvel show WandaVision. Yeah, it's
- 6:56Speaker 1: like a shout out to WandaVision kind of show. And
- 6:58Speaker 1: she's like, yeah, Zach Braf is directing. We're friends, and
- 7:00Speaker 1: I'm just sitting here like, wait, what what did It
- 7:02Speaker 1: was the weirdest thing, very surreal.
- 7:05Speaker 4: That is nuts. That feels good though, But.
- 7:07Speaker 1: Anyway, the show is very good.
- 7:08Speaker 4: Maybe you should be directing some boys.
- 7:10Speaker 1: I know, listen if anyone from the Boys is listening.
- 7:13Speaker 1: I love the show. I love gen V. Please think
- 7:15Speaker 1: of me. I love it. It's so well written.
- 7:18Speaker 4: They're directing. Slave might even be full this year or
- 7:21Speaker 4: close to full this year.
- 7:23Speaker 1: I imagine they're done or they got to be done.
- 7:26Speaker 4: It's a new season.
- 7:27Speaker 1: But anyway, it's so good. Check out the boys. The
- 7:28Speaker 1: other thing I watched I was gonna say about the
- 7:30Speaker 1: Black Mirror thing. Donald, there's this episode, right, it's Anthony
- 7:34Speaker 1: Mackie to what, Joelle, did you see this one with
- 7:36Speaker 1: the guys who are going to the VR street Fighting
- 7:39Speaker 1: Game and start hooking up. No, oh, my god, the
- 7:44Speaker 1: guy actor from Moonlight who's genius and uh and Anthony
- 7:48Speaker 1: Mackie right down, they're best friends, right, and one's about
- 7:51Speaker 1: it's like you and me. That's why he's going to
- 7:53Speaker 1: make you laugh because like they're like best friends. One's
- 7:55Speaker 1: married and has kids, and he's his life is a
- 7:57Speaker 1: little bit like he's a bit bored in his life.
- 7:59Speaker 1: The other's bachelor still but he's sort of dissatisfied in
- 8:02Speaker 1: his life. And it's like in the future, right, So
- 8:04Speaker 1: they get like this street fighter game, remember like the
- 8:07Speaker 1: like Tekin, right, but it's a VR. So when you play,
- 8:10Speaker 1: you are the person and you feel the punches, right,
- 8:13Speaker 1: and one one decides to be like this ripped Asian guy, right,
- 8:16Speaker 1: and one decides to be like super hot Asian check
- 8:19Speaker 1: like she's so beautiful, right, and they go, let's play
- 8:22Speaker 1: do this the newest thing like we used to like when
- 8:23Speaker 1: we were in college. We got to play. But it's
- 8:24Speaker 1: full on VR. You feel the punches, you feel every sensation. Right,
- 8:29Speaker 1: they go into the world of the VR game, right,
- 8:31Speaker 1: and they start like fighting like this is so crazy,
- 8:34Speaker 1: and you see them when they're in their VR state,
- 8:35Speaker 1: they're like like the matrix. They're like shifting because they
- 8:37Speaker 1: can feel the punches and everything. And then they just
- 8:40Speaker 1: look at each other and they just start hooking up.
- 8:43Speaker 1: They start making out because they're both so hot, right,
- 8:45Speaker 1: like the ones like the ten they're both ten out
- 8:47Speaker 1: of ten. Looks, Yes, he's incredible, and they just start
- 8:52Speaker 1: like hooking up because they're both so attracted to the avatar.
- 8:57Speaker 1: But they're feeling the feelings on their couches in their houses.
- 9:00Speaker 4: Yeah, so who's the bottom.
- 9:03Speaker 1: So then they start realizing like, oh my god, this
- 9:05Speaker 1: is cheating. And the guy who's married is I can't
- 9:07Speaker 1: do this to my wife. The actress, oh my god,
- 9:09Speaker 1: she was so good. I got to give her a
- 9:10Speaker 1: shout out. She's incredible. I never saw this woman before,
- 9:14Speaker 1: but oh Joe, when you just look up.
- 9:16Speaker 4: Look, it's definitely cheating if you're having sex in VR
- 9:19Speaker 4: with someone. If it's cheating, if you're texting someone, it's
- 9:23Speaker 4: definitely cheating if you are having sex in VR.
- 9:26Speaker 1: But dude, they feel all the feelings and the dude's like, finally,
- 9:29Speaker 1: he's like, this is fucked up. I got it. I
- 9:30Speaker 1: can't do this to my wife. And they're like bros.
- 9:33Speaker 1: And then finally they meet up. Sorry these are spoilers,
- 9:35Speaker 1: I guess, but they meet up because they're like, dude,
- 9:37Speaker 1: we got to see if we're gay or not because
- 9:39Speaker 1: I need to know. So like they're like, we should
- 9:42Speaker 1: probably kiss and see if it's like real life where
- 9:44Speaker 1: it's just VR world, and so they so they kiss
- 9:48Speaker 1: and there's like not anything. He's like no, he's like
- 9:50Speaker 1: you know, he's like, fuck, it's just in the VR
- 9:53Speaker 1: world that they because that's for the characters, right. But
- 9:56Speaker 1: then he's like what does it feel like? Because one
- 9:57Speaker 1: of them is I'm guy, and he's like, what does
- 9:58Speaker 1: it feel like when I'm like basically when I'm fucking you?
- 10:00Speaker 1: And he's like, dude, It's like so much more intense
- 10:03Speaker 1: than being a man. Being a man and having an
- 10:05Speaker 1: orgasms like a guitar soul having as a woman is
- 10:07Speaker 1: like an orchestra.
- 10:11Speaker 3: This is amazing for the cast and Credibles, we already
- 10:13Speaker 3: been Anthony Macki and y'all, y'all, Abdulah mate in the
- 10:15Speaker 3: second Nicole Bahari, who is incredible, palm commentive plays Rosette,
- 10:21Speaker 3: who I think is the woman.
- 10:22Speaker 1: No, no, the woman I'm talking about is is the
- 10:23Speaker 1: African American wife she.
- 10:25Speaker 2: Oh Bahari, Oh, it's fantastic.
- 10:27Speaker 1: I know she is donald. She she's a wonderful actress.
- 10:31Speaker 1: I haven't seen her. What else has she been in.
- 10:33Speaker 2: Jowel one second? In what would you know her? From Shame?
- 10:38Speaker 3: She was in the Last Fall, she was in did
- 10:42Speaker 3: you see Miss Juneteenth? That she's so great and that.
- 10:44Speaker 1: That was like, I'm not going to know she is
- 10:45Speaker 1: unless she was in Marvel or Star Wars.
- 10:47Speaker 2: So she was the lead in Sleepy Hollow.
- 10:50Speaker 1: Anyway, she's a wonderful actress and she she did such
- 10:53Speaker 1: a good job in this. And Anthony Mackie is always
- 10:54Speaker 1: good and what's.
- 10:55Speaker 4: The other falcon? From Falcon in the wonder So.
- 10:58Speaker 1: There you go. Donald's he is, Yeah, this guy is
- 11:01Speaker 1: because he was in what's that show? Donald didn't say it,
- 11:04Speaker 1: but the Watcher what's it called John Joel The Watchers
- 11:06Speaker 1: or Watchman, Watchman, Watchman? He was in that, right, he's
- 11:11Speaker 1: a blue guy.
- 11:11Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, he played he played Uh.
- 11:15Speaker 1: Yeah, you saw his blue penis?
- 11:16Speaker 2: Professor Manhattan.
- 11:18Speaker 4: Yeah, Doctor Manhattan.
- 11:19Speaker 1: He's a really wonderful actor.
- 11:21Speaker 4: Was his penis bigger than the white guys?
- 11:24Speaker 1: Well, they didn't show in the In Black Marry, they
- 11:26Speaker 1: don't show penis, but it.
- 11:27Speaker 4: Was so in in Doctor Manhattan. If you saw his penis,
- 11:31Speaker 4: he do see his penis, don't me?
- 11:33Speaker 1: And I remember I don't remember its size, but I
- 11:35Speaker 1: remember that it was.
- 11:35Speaker 4: Blue because in the movie he had a pretty big
- 11:39Speaker 4: penis too. Man, they both like he's walking around and
- 11:42Speaker 4: then they you know what they did in the movie.
- 11:44Speaker 4: I can't talk about it, can.
- 11:45Speaker 1: I know you can't. I'm sorry. You're a segment friend.
- 11:48Speaker 1: Dresser will knock on your door.
- 11:50Speaker 4: I don't mind that. When I come to kick it,
- 11:54Speaker 4: we could totally kick it.
- 11:55Speaker 1: Frans like you know, like the bad Signal of fantasies,
- 11:59Speaker 1: like that Sag comedy and tragedy signal, and she's like,
- 12:02Speaker 1: I gotta go to Donald's house.
- 12:05Speaker 4: If that's what it takes to get her over here.
- 12:07Speaker 1: All right, listen, we've been trying to do fun things,
- 12:09Speaker 1: smart things, educational things. We hope you liked our vagina episode, Joelle.
- 12:13Speaker 1: Was it well received? Our vagina We got a lot.
- 12:15Speaker 3: Of funny comments on the social media? Is so how
- 12:19Speaker 3: much people are loving he was a giant specialist.
- 12:21Speaker 1: I thought that was a really good episode.
- 12:23Speaker 4: We should have the vagina specialists and the penis specialists
- 12:26Speaker 4: on at the same time.
- 12:27Speaker 1: Yes, And then they fall in love and they start dating.
- 12:30Speaker 4: That would be so dope if they could just and.
- 12:32Speaker 1: He's like, I love the way you talk about pussy,
- 12:35Speaker 1: and she's like, I love you talk about like where
- 12:39Speaker 1: do you live?
- 12:40Speaker 4: Don't talk that way, Joel, Joelle, you think when doctors
- 12:44Speaker 4: get off of work, they're like, you're erect.
- 12:48Speaker 1: Organ Yeah, you talk in a freaking doctor turn how
- 12:51Speaker 1: to talk dirtier than anyone, Joelle. They're like, I want
- 12:53Speaker 1: to see you think when doctors talk dirty, they're like
- 12:59Speaker 1: they use the specific please God, no, please, the nicest Menora.
- 13:07Speaker 1: She's like, no, girl.
- 13:11Speaker 4: Lay, that's that's for all you young Jewish men out there.
- 13:18Speaker 4: You want a good pickup line, Uncle Zach just gave
- 13:22Speaker 4: it to you.
- 13:23Speaker 1: I saw the funniest pickup line on on an Instagram
- 13:27Speaker 1: this real. This guy goes, I mean, you have to
- 13:30Speaker 1: be so cheesy to do this, but it was funny.
- 13:32Speaker 1: He goes the guy, He goes the guy over there.
- 13:34Speaker 1: I thinks you're cute. And then he ran over there
- 13:36Speaker 1: and like leaned on the counter and smiled back at her.
- 13:39Speaker 4: Oh my god, you like the Joel you rolled your eyes?
- 13:49Speaker 2: Dad. Joke can be.
- 13:51Speaker 1: Pretty No, but like it was so cheesy but funny,
- 13:53Speaker 1: like the guy who did it made it funny. It
- 13:55Speaker 1: was good.
- 13:56Speaker 4: That's how you at least get a drink.
- 13:58Speaker 1: That's how she's laugh just because it's so stupid, right.
- 14:02Speaker 2: M hm hm.
- 14:03Speaker 3: You gotta that, and it makes you seem harmless. That
- 14:07Speaker 3: guys probably chill.
- 14:08Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, listen, guys, today we talked about Vagina's
- 14:12Speaker 1: last week. We're gonna talk about alcohol today because this
- 14:15Speaker 1: guy Andy Rammage I heard on a podcast and he
- 14:18Speaker 1: is so smart and speaks so interestingly about alcohol, and uh,
- 14:23Speaker 1: we are fake doctors, and we thought we should have
- 14:26Speaker 1: an interesting episode since we can no longer talk about
- 14:29Speaker 1: scrubs for now about alcohol. So is he here to him?
- 14:32Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 14:33Speaker 1: All right, Donald count Us, I'm not sure we made
- 14:40Speaker 1: about a bunch of docs.

- 15:11Speaker 5: Thank you very much.
- 15:14Speaker 1: Oh look, Andy's got all the professional gear and everything too.
- 15:17Speaker 4: Well.
- 15:18Speaker 1: You're going to get a great recording out of him.
- 15:20Speaker 1: And he Welcome to the podcast. That's my co host,
- 15:22Speaker 1: Donald Faison, Welcome. I want to just give the audience
- 15:25Speaker 1: a little context. I you guys know, I've spoken about
- 15:29Speaker 1: Rich role on the podcast. I think he is just
- 15:31Speaker 1: such an incredible man, has a wonderful podcast, and I'm
- 15:34Speaker 1: lucky enough to be friendly with him. And I've been
- 15:37Speaker 1: playing with my own relationship to alcohol. I've been trying
- 15:40Speaker 1: drinking less and going on like two month breaks and
- 15:43Speaker 1: three month breaks and just seeing how my body felt
- 15:45Speaker 1: and how my mind felt. And when I told Rich this,
- 15:49Speaker 1: he said, oh my gosh, have you ever heard my
- 15:52Speaker 1: podcast with Andy? You should hear it? And he sent
- 15:55Speaker 1: it to me and it really was life changing. I'm
- 15:57Speaker 1: not blowing it up too big to say that to you, Andy,
- 16:00Speaker 1: I really thought the way you spoke about alcohol and
- 16:03Speaker 1: the way you talked about this sort of middle lane
- 16:06Speaker 1: for people who are just curious about alcohol, people who
- 16:08Speaker 1: are casual drinkers, people who maybe get drunk a few
- 16:11Speaker 1: times a month or whatever. Not necessarily not necessarily speaking
- 16:15Speaker 1: to people who would need a program like AA or
- 16:19Speaker 1: something other than that, but that sort of middle lane
- 16:21Speaker 1: of people who are kind of curious what would my
- 16:24Speaker 1: life be like without alcohol? And you just spoke so
- 16:26Speaker 1: eloquently about it, And I'm just I feel shy around
- 16:31Speaker 1: you because you're so smart, and I wanted to have
- 16:33Speaker 1: you on to share your knowledge without audience.
- 16:35Speaker 5: Thank you for such a wonderful intro.
- 16:38Speaker 4: I'm yeah.
- 16:40Speaker 5: The message of alcohol freedness with the world, that's what
- 16:44Speaker 5: it's all about.
- 16:45Speaker 1: Yeah. Now, when I first found you, you were a
- 16:47Speaker 1: part of something called One Year No Beer. I believe
- 16:50Speaker 1: you have a different project now, but can you talk
- 16:52Speaker 1: a little bit about, you know, how you got into
- 16:54Speaker 1: this and how your life changed from experimenting with no alcohol.
- 16:59Speaker 5: Yes, originally I was a professional soccer player. I guess
- 17:02Speaker 5: you'd call it over there in my early twenties, and
- 17:04Speaker 5: then I got injured, traveled the world, ended up in
- 17:07Speaker 5: the world of broken the guys in the bright jackets
- 17:09Speaker 5: that scream and shout at one another, fast paced electric,
- 17:13Speaker 5: high octane, high stress, a wash with alcohol. That's how
- 17:17Speaker 5: we entertained. That's what we did. Fast forward ten years.
- 17:20Speaker 5: I'd reached a certain level of success. I guess materially
- 17:24Speaker 5: and in my mind I should have been blissfully happy.
- 17:27Speaker 5: Only I wasn't. I was free stone, forty two pounds
- 17:30Speaker 5: heavier than I am.
- 17:31Speaker 4: Now.
- 17:31Speaker 5: I just discovered I had early on set heart disease.
- 17:34Speaker 5: I was starting to suffer from morning after anxiety. There
- 17:38Speaker 5: was a bit of a dark cloud over my life.
- 17:40Speaker 5: I didn't have the bump to get up and go
- 17:42Speaker 5: that I used to have actually fought in this weird
- 17:45Speaker 5: space it must.
- 17:45Speaker 4: Be middle age.
- 17:47Speaker 5: And then, like lots of people, I started to experiment
- 17:49Speaker 5: with different ideas and concepts. I started to try and
- 17:52Speaker 5: run a bit more, only I was really inconsistent. I
- 17:54Speaker 5: tried to eat a bit better, yet I was inconsistent
- 17:57Speaker 5: in my nutrition. I tried ice baths, diditation. I was
- 18:00Speaker 5: too anxious to meditate. The last thing, which I think
- 18:04Speaker 5: is so true of so many people that I ever questioned,
- 18:07Speaker 5: was alcohol because it was a given right, that's what
- 18:09Speaker 5: you did as a broker, and as an adult, we
- 18:10Speaker 5: all drink. But I had this nagging feeling that maybe
- 18:14Speaker 5: if I took a break, things might start to change.
- 18:17Speaker 5: And I did, and it transformed my life. And I
- 18:21Speaker 5: was a middle lane drinker, and I think that's really
- 18:22Speaker 5: important to get that across to your listeners. So a
- 18:24Speaker 5: middle lane drinker being someone that would drink averagely, someone
- 18:27Speaker 5: that would drink heavily, someone that would drink not at
- 18:30Speaker 5: all and moderately, which is probably about seventy percent of
- 18:33Speaker 5: the adult population of the Western Wales. So there was
- 18:35Speaker 5: no problem. There was no rock bottom. Was I drinking
- 18:38Speaker 5: too much? Absolutely, but who isn't. So I removed it
- 18:42Speaker 5: and got these amazing results. I lost that weight, That
- 18:45Speaker 5: forty two pounds came off for me. My resting heart
- 18:47Speaker 5: rate went from sixty eight down to forty two. I
- 18:49Speaker 5: paused early on set heart disease. My business, my broken business,
- 18:54Speaker 5: and everyone said it would foil because you can't be
- 18:56Speaker 5: a broker and not drink. Grew seven times bigger in
- 18:58Speaker 5: half the time. It was such a beautiful experience. I
- 19:01Speaker 5: just wanted to share it. I didn't know how to
- 19:02Speaker 5: share it. I wrote a little your book, put the
- 19:04Speaker 5: book into the world. It got picked up by one
- 19:06Speaker 5: of the world's biggest publishers, Pam McMillan. So I wrote
- 19:08Speaker 5: another book called the twenty eight Alcohol Free Challenge. It
- 19:11Speaker 5: started the one you Know Beer movement, which collectively with
- 19:15Speaker 5: all the other initiatives that I've got involved in, have
- 19:17Speaker 5: inspired hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of people to
- 19:20Speaker 5: take a proactive break. And it's been that message I've
- 19:23Speaker 5: been banging on.
- 19:24Speaker 1: Yeah, can you do it so well?
- 19:26Speaker 4: Yeah? First of all, as someone who still drinks alcohol
- 19:30Speaker 4: and delves into his vices, you look amazing.
- 19:34Speaker 1: First we should tell the audience that he's ripped and handsome.
- 19:38Speaker 4: Right, you said that you were a rugby player or
- 19:44Speaker 4: a soccer play football player when you stopped drinking alcohol.
- 19:49Speaker 4: Did that make it so that you went to the
- 19:51Speaker 4: gym and that your diet changed because of that? Because
- 19:54Speaker 4: you know, there are people that say, you know, no
- 19:56Speaker 4: lost weight, I just stopped drinking and that's all they did.
- 20:00Speaker 4: And I find that hard to believe because when I
- 20:03Speaker 4: didn't drink I didn't just lose weight. I had to
- 20:05Speaker 4: go to the gym and stuff like that. Can you
- 20:07Speaker 4: speak on how your physique and fitness came back to you,
- 20:11Speaker 4: because I've seen pictures of you when you were at
- 20:15Speaker 4: the height of your middle ground drinking.
- 20:19Speaker 5: So true, and you're right. Well, some of the research,
- 20:22Speaker 5: which is really interesting, says that for middle lane drinkers
- 20:25Speaker 5: who take a twenty eight day break from alcohol, they
- 20:28Speaker 5: on average lose about free kilograms, which is really interesting.
- 20:32Speaker 5: But for me, you're right, the reason that the weight
- 20:34Speaker 5: fell off wasn't just stopping drinking. It was actually then
- 20:37Speaker 5: that I got consistent in the way that I was exercising.
- 20:39Speaker 5: Because if we think about it, what is the number
- 20:41Speaker 5: one thing that gets in the way of our consistency
- 20:43Speaker 5: of exercise? I would say for most people it's a
- 20:46Speaker 5: hangover all those few drinks at the weekend that means
- 20:49Speaker 5: they can't quite be bothered to go to the gym
- 20:52Speaker 5: on a Monday or a Tuesday. What's the number one
- 20:54Speaker 5: thing that destroys our nutrition is invariably that stodge food
- 20:58Speaker 5: that we crave after those couple of drinks. Again, this
- 21:01Speaker 5: is middle lane drinking. So when you remove that suddenly
- 21:04Speaker 5: my nutrition was much better, my exercise was more consistent.
- 21:08Speaker 5: Plus I removed all those calories from alcohol. And you're right,
- 21:11Speaker 5: the combination of those few things the white fell off
- 21:13Speaker 5: on me. I got into the best shape of my
- 21:16Speaker 5: life mainly because the catalyst was alcohol, but then it
- 21:19Speaker 5: was the combination of all those other things.
- 21:21Speaker 4: Yeah, how old are you?
- 21:23Speaker 5: Forty nine tomorrow?
- 21:25Speaker 4: Happy birthday, same age.
- 21:26Speaker 1: Happy birthday, same age as Donald Faison. I think also too,
- 21:31Speaker 1: when you do it, I've been just experimenting with not
- 21:35Speaker 1: drinking for a while now, and you feel you automatically
- 21:39Speaker 1: feel like proud of that the quote unquote health kick
- 21:42Speaker 1: that you're on. So I think another answer to Donald's
- 21:44Speaker 1: question is it goes Oh well, I do want to
- 21:47Speaker 1: do that. I do want to get on the bike,
- 21:49Speaker 1: I do want to go to that yoga class because
- 21:52Speaker 1: I'm enjoying this health kick, and there is no there
- 21:55Speaker 1: is no headache when you wake up, so you're more
- 21:57Speaker 1: likely to go do the thing because you're not like
- 22:01Speaker 1: the cloud and the fog of whether it's two drinks
- 22:04Speaker 1: or too many drinks from the night before just isn't
- 22:06Speaker 1: a part of your life.
- 22:08Speaker 5: That's certainly so true. I think that's what happens to
- 22:10Speaker 5: most people. They get on this lovely role of health
- 22:13Speaker 5: because the foundation for me is remove alcohol tactically for
- 22:17Speaker 5: a period of time. Doesn't have to be for everything.
- 22:18Speaker 5: But I think in that space, as you say, people
- 22:20Speaker 5: feel better, they look better, which compounds in motivation to
- 22:24Speaker 5: keep doing the things that they get results from, such
- 22:26Speaker 5: as exercise and better nutrition.
- 22:28Speaker 4: I've seen Zach on two sides. I've seen Zach on
- 22:32Speaker 4: the side where it was like, oh boy, you are gone,
- 22:36Speaker 4: and now I see him where he's He's always been
- 22:39Speaker 4: kind of the life of the party, but he holds
- 22:41Speaker 4: court and is very clear and there's no there's no
- 22:46Speaker 4: inebriation to it. As a friend, it's something to admire.
- 22:51Speaker 4: And then when he meets people and then they try
- 22:55Speaker 4: to push things on him. As his friend, I find
- 22:58Speaker 4: myself step trying to step into like, yo, leave him alone.
- 23:02Speaker 4: He's sober and this is and and it's really really
- 23:06Speaker 4: working for him, you know what I mean. I need
- 23:08Speaker 4: to get on this kick too. What is this twenty
- 23:11Speaker 4: eight day challenge?
- 23:11Speaker 1: Well, are gonna get to all that, But I just
- 23:13Speaker 1: want to say, like I actually, for me, the hardest
- 23:15Speaker 1: part of experimenting with sobriety is the only challenging part
- 23:20Speaker 1: for me personally, and obviously everyone listening you have a
- 23:22Speaker 1: different story. I'm never speaking for you. I'm only speaking
- 23:24Speaker 1: for myself. Is when I sit down to dinner and
- 23:27Speaker 1: everyone orders a drink. It's that first drink at a
- 23:29Speaker 1: dinner party a restaurant where everyone's like, oh, I'll have this,
- 23:32Speaker 1: we will have that. You have that that I feel like, ooh,
- 23:35Speaker 1: that would be nice. A wine buzz right now at
- 23:38Speaker 1: the end of this day would be great. But the
- 23:40Speaker 1: set like five minutes later, when their drinks arrive and
- 23:43Speaker 1: they start that that has passed. For me. I'm now present.
- 23:47Speaker 1: I enjoy when people get buzzed. That doesn't bother me
- 23:50Speaker 1: at all. I'm whereas I would have started getting buzzed
- 23:53Speaker 1: and not as present. I'm now way more present in
- 23:56Speaker 1: the conversation and listening to people and contributing in this
- 24:00Speaker 1: someone who likes to make people laugh, quicker witted, and
- 24:02Speaker 1: all of the things that I was trying to be
- 24:05Speaker 1: by getting drunk. I'm actually truly more of sober.
- 24:10Speaker 5: Yeah, this is so powerful, And I discovered that myself.
- 24:12Speaker 5: It took me years to figure it out. I would
- 24:14Speaker 5: drink to overcome that initial social anxiety, that uncomfortable feeling
- 24:19Speaker 5: when people get together in a group. Recently, we had
- 24:22Speaker 5: a big boat party on the Thames called the No
- 24:25Speaker 5: Booze Cruise. Two hundred and fifty people got together on
- 24:27Speaker 5: a boat, no alcohol, and the first fifteen minutes there
- 24:30Speaker 5: was that natural sense of uncomfortableness getting to no new people,
- 24:35Speaker 5: and then it went away. And then it dawned on
- 24:37Speaker 5: me that for all of those years and how many
- 24:40Speaker 5: people are in this bracket drink to overcome that social anxiety,
- 24:44Speaker 5: when actually if they just sat with it for fifteen minutes,
- 24:47Speaker 5: you described it goes and then you're sharp, You've got
- 24:51Speaker 5: the banter, you can be that life and soul and
- 24:53Speaker 5: then you feel incredible.
- 24:54Speaker 4: You can drive home.
- 24:55Speaker 1: Yeah, and you wake up at seven in the morning
- 24:58Speaker 1: and you're like, yes, fucking awesome.
- 25:01Speaker 4: How long does it take really for alcohol to set
- 25:03Speaker 4: into like about fifteen minutes right where you're like, oh shit,
- 25:07Speaker 4: I'm drunk, right, And if you didn't drink and you
- 25:10Speaker 4: just let the party come to you, you still be
- 25:13Speaker 4: in the same state. You just wouldn't be inebriated.
- 25:16Speaker 1: What I find is that, and this is funny, You're
- 25:18Speaker 1: just reminded me. And this is a random I wasn't
- 25:19Speaker 1: playing some about this. But when we did the Garden State,
- 25:21Speaker 1: the scene in the Garden State where there's an ecstasy
- 25:24Speaker 1: party scene, and it was the second day of filming,
- 25:26Speaker 1: and I was so nervous. I was a young director.
- 25:28Speaker 1: I was like, how am I going to get thirty
- 25:30Speaker 1: people to act like they're on drugs and drunk and axing?
- 25:33Speaker 1: And I was had all these plans like, oh, let
- 25:36Speaker 1: them drink. What am I gonna do? I go, No,
- 25:37Speaker 1: that'll be a mess. And we just started acting it
- 25:41Speaker 1: and being it, and within fifteen minutes everyone felt the
- 25:46Speaker 1: feelings if you had twenty five people pretending to be
- 25:49Speaker 1: on ecstasy and drug and I'm they just manifesting it,
- 25:52Speaker 1: And I feel like that's a bizarre way of putting it,
- 25:55Speaker 1: but also that's true when you're sober in a party setting,
- 25:59Speaker 1: if you just manifest like I am present, I am interested,
- 26:02Speaker 1: I am silly, it just naturally happens.
- 26:05Speaker 5: Yeah, and there's the placebo. Now, I think of the
- 26:07Speaker 5: alcohol free drinks that didn't exist. You know when I
- 26:10Speaker 5: got into this ten years ago, that wasn't an option.
- 26:13Speaker 5: That wasn't none available really, so you have to stand
- 26:15Speaker 5: there with, you know, a fizzy drink of cola. Yeah,
- 26:18Speaker 5: And it was so obvious.
- 26:19Speaker 4: It's like a.
- 26:19Speaker 5: Beacon to say, I'm not drinking. Pickle me, pressurize me
- 26:22Speaker 5: to drink.
- 26:23Speaker 4: Where is now? What are you not drinking? Bandy bud.
- 26:29Speaker 4: Let's take a break.
- 26:30Speaker 1: We'll be right back after these fine words. Well, Andy,
- 26:39Speaker 1: I want to talk about that. I want to go
- 26:40Speaker 1: into that because another thing I loved about what you
- 26:42Speaker 1: said is and we're going to get into the challenge
- 26:45Speaker 1: and stuff, but one of the things that I loved
- 26:46Speaker 1: what you said is that you love using the challenge
- 26:51Speaker 1: for the societal pressures because you can say to people, oh,
- 26:55Speaker 1: I'm doing this challenge, and especially men, it's such a
- 26:58Speaker 1: man a masculine thing. It just shifts people. They're like, oh,
- 27:01Speaker 1: what's the challenge? What are you doing? And so it
- 27:03Speaker 1: sort of takes the peer pressure out of it because
- 27:05Speaker 1: people are curious of this challenge that you're on. Can
- 27:08Speaker 1: you speak to that a bit.
- 27:10Speaker 5: Yeah, And that was really important to me because, as
- 27:12Speaker 5: Donald just mentioned, they're there's social pressure, especially ten years ago,
- 27:16Speaker 5: to drink was immense, especially if you've been that guy,
- 27:19Speaker 5: and I was that guy. You know, if you're going
- 27:21Speaker 5: to come out with me, I was going to entertain you,
- 27:23Speaker 5: and it was going to involve alcohol. It's how I
- 27:24Speaker 5: met my friends, met my wife. It was just quite
- 27:27Speaker 5: ubiquitous in the way that I would socialize. If you
- 27:30Speaker 5: try and switch that off, it's really difficult because you
- 27:33Speaker 5: meet the same friends or you meet your clients and
- 27:35Speaker 5: they're like, well, hold on a minute, almost as if
- 27:37Speaker 5: that's a slight on them, So you don't want to
- 27:39Speaker 5: drink around me, And of course my rubber arm would
- 27:42Speaker 5: be twisted then really quickly, you know, and I'd be
- 27:44Speaker 5: called boring and all those things that would often trip
- 27:47Speaker 5: me up. So I couldn't get started. So I had
- 27:50Speaker 5: to come up with a bit of a plan. So
- 27:51Speaker 5: for me, making it a challenge and telling people that
- 27:54Speaker 5: I was on a challenge brought me some time because
- 27:56Speaker 5: I think in their mindset they were a bit like, oh,
- 27:58Speaker 5: I'm going to get my buddy back in twenty eight
- 28:01Speaker 5: days or ninety days, so I'll let you away with it.
- 28:04Speaker 5: But secretly I knew if I could get on a
- 28:06Speaker 5: roll with this, which I did, I might never go back.
- 28:08Speaker 5: And here I am pretty much ten years.
- 28:10Speaker 1: Later, right, But didn't you say also that, like I
- 28:14Speaker 1: thought you said this that the sort of friends and
- 28:16Speaker 1: men react differently to the concept of a challenge.
- 28:19Speaker 5: Oh, completely, because I think we're used to that help
- 28:21Speaker 5: me from triathlons to lion men and marathons. It's a
- 28:24Speaker 5: bit like raw challenge. So they got that, oh, we
- 28:27Speaker 5: can do a challenge.
- 28:28Speaker 4: Yeah, I get that.
- 28:28Speaker 5: I'll let you do that as a friend. But as
- 28:30Speaker 5: long as you're going to come back right and drink
- 28:32Speaker 5: with me at the end of the challenge, and I'll
- 28:33Speaker 5: be like yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, You're.
- 28:36Speaker 4: Like and then after the twenty eight days you're like,
- 28:38Speaker 4: you know what, dude, I gotta be honest with you, bro. Yeah,
- 28:42Speaker 4: I don't want to go back, Bro, I don't want
- 28:44Speaker 4: to come back, man, Like, I just feel good about
- 28:47Speaker 4: myself right now. And let's uh, let's let's just we've
- 28:51Speaker 4: been kicking it anyway. Let's just really ask you know.
- 28:54Speaker 1: One of the things I've been fascinating with. And I
- 28:56Speaker 1: know this is obvious to everyone listening, but I really
- 29:00Speaker 1: be aware of it as I as I play with
- 29:02Speaker 1: sobriety that gosh. I said this to Annie in an
- 29:06Speaker 1: email we are sold from our entire lives that this
- 29:11Speaker 1: is how you have fun from high school to college
- 29:16Speaker 1: to socializing as an adult. Whether it's advertising, whether it's
- 29:20Speaker 1: just our culture, whether it's our friends, it's our parents,
- 29:22Speaker 1: it's our big brothers and sisters. The way that you
- 29:25Speaker 1: have fun and the way that you date and hook
- 29:29Speaker 1: up and be sexy and be free is alcohol. That
- 29:34Speaker 1: was like that, even that was never questioned in my life.
- 29:37Speaker 1: That was the rules of the culture. And I imagine
- 29:40Speaker 1: it's more intense in England, but I mean in America,
- 29:42Speaker 1: that's what we grew up with.
- 29:44Speaker 5: I think it's the same. I mean, here's a great example.
- 29:46Speaker 5: I've got seventeen year old daughter who will soon be eighteen,
- 29:49Speaker 5: and the drink limit or age of drinking in the
- 29:52Speaker 5: UK's eighteen. Try and buy a birthday card from eighteen
- 29:56Speaker 5: year old that doesn't have a picture of alcohol on it.
- 29:59Speaker 4: It's almost it's.
- 30:00Speaker 5: Almost impossible to buy a birthday card for an eighteen
- 30:04Speaker 5: year old that is not celebrating the fact that they
- 30:06Speaker 5: can now drink alcohol. It's ubiquitous. We've got big alcohol
- 30:10Speaker 5: pouring trillions into marketing, lobbying our governments. We've sold a
- 30:15Speaker 5: story from a very young age that alcohol is fun,
- 30:17Speaker 5: it's cool, it's sexy, and marketing works. That's why we
- 30:20Speaker 5: spend so much money on it. But where I come
- 30:22Speaker 5: along is to try and wake people up a little
- 30:24Speaker 5: bit and just say is it really Is it really
- 30:27Speaker 5: that fun for you? And I think a lot of
- 30:29Speaker 5: people will flippantly say, of course it's fun and it's
- 30:31Speaker 5: boring to not drink, And then I'll ask questions such as, well,
- 30:34Speaker 5: have you ever not had fun whilst drinking? And I
- 30:37Speaker 5: would probably argue that most people, some of the worst
- 30:39Speaker 5: nights of their life have involved alcohol. Some of the
- 30:43Speaker 5: things that they're shameful for and regretful about have involved alcohol.
- 30:46Speaker 5: Many nights are very average, if not a bit shite
- 30:50Speaker 5: after a few drinks. It spoils many great nights. And
- 30:52Speaker 5: of course there's the old one that's a great night.
- 30:55Speaker 5: But that can't be the alcohol, can it, Because if
- 30:58Speaker 5: it was true it was alcohol, then every night would
- 30:59Speaker 5: be a great night. So I think it's when you
- 31:01Speaker 5: start to bring a bit of awareness to it, you realize, actually,
- 31:03Speaker 5: I've just been sold this dream that I keep playing,
- 31:07Speaker 5: and actually I don't think it's true for most people
- 31:09Speaker 5: when they really pick it apart.
- 31:11Speaker 1: Yeah, that's so well said. It's a habit. It's a
- 31:14Speaker 1: habit that we were just we're just so used to,
- 31:17Speaker 1: and it's ingrained in the system, like the idea of
- 31:19Speaker 1: the idea of going on I'm sure a lot of
- 31:21Speaker 1: people listening are like, yeah, I might try that. I
- 31:22Speaker 1: could try a month, but like, oh my god, going
- 31:24Speaker 1: on a date, Like, how would I even do that?
- 31:27Speaker 1: Like that's how ingrained it is into our culture. Like, wait,
- 31:30Speaker 1: you want me to go on a first date and
- 31:32Speaker 1: not drink? What are you talking about?
- 31:35Speaker 5: That's almost weird.
- 31:36Speaker 4: It would be like that.
- 31:37Speaker 5: I remember, this is genuinely true. One of my biggest
- 31:40Speaker 5: fears about stopping drinking. My biggest concerns was this, How
- 31:45Speaker 5: the hell was I going to dance at a wedding.
- 31:49Speaker 5: I was like, that's impossible, middle aged ginger, man, I'm
- 31:53Speaker 5: not even sure. So from middle aged ginger and dancing,
- 32:00Speaker 5: what's that? And of course I did it and it
- 32:03Speaker 5: wasn't pretty, trust me.
- 32:04Speaker 4: But yeah, but if you were on alcohol, it would
- 32:07Speaker 4: have been ugly. I'm going to keep it very true.
- 32:12Speaker 1: And he talk about One thing you said on Rich's
- 32:14Speaker 1: podcast that I really responded to was this idea, even
- 32:17Speaker 1: if you're a casual drinker, you're having a few drinks
- 32:21Speaker 1: two or three times a week, you may not feel
- 32:24Speaker 1: the hangover the effects of it, but you are always
- 32:28Speaker 1: having some alcohol in your system and under some fog
- 32:31Speaker 1: of alcohol. Just talk about that, because I love the
- 32:33Speaker 1: way you put it on Rich's podcast. You were saying
- 32:35Speaker 1: that most people don't know this. They think when the
- 32:38Speaker 1: nause is over, or a hangover's over, or even if
- 32:40Speaker 1: they just had two glasses of wine at dinner, that like,
- 32:43Speaker 1: it's all good. But actually, if you're doing that at
- 32:46Speaker 1: minimum two nights a week, that alcohol is always in
- 32:49Speaker 1: your system and your brain is still under some fog
- 32:52Speaker 1: of that.
- 32:53Speaker 5: Yeah, and it's so true. That was my personal reflection.
- 32:55Speaker 5: I suddenly realized even though I was in that middle
- 32:57Speaker 5: lane and I was maybe out with clients during the week,
- 33:01Speaker 5: and then I'd have a few more at the weekend,
- 33:03Speaker 5: and I started to really think about the knock on
- 33:05Speaker 5: consequences and effect in terms of my psychology and physiology.
- 33:09Speaker 5: I realized that I was never ever out of its
- 33:12Speaker 5: clutches in many ways. And then I started to broaden
- 33:15Speaker 5: that and realized that probably one hundred percent of the time,
- 33:19Speaker 5: I was underperforming in my job as a parent, as
- 33:23Speaker 5: a partner, because I'm constantly a little bit tired, a
- 33:26Speaker 5: little bit jaded. We know for all the research that
- 33:28Speaker 5: it takes days, depending on how much you've drunk, to
- 33:31Speaker 5: flush through your system. We know instantly that even those
- 33:35Speaker 5: one or two drinks is going to destroy the quality
- 33:37Speaker 5: of your sleep. And if you look at the research
- 33:39Speaker 5: behind poor sleep and then performance and mental health, it's incredible.
- 33:43Speaker 5: So I was doing that to you. It destroys the
- 33:45Speaker 5: quality of your sleep. You've obviously got this process where
- 33:48Speaker 5: you're trying to maintain equilibrium. Your balance is trying to
- 33:52Speaker 5: your brain's trying to get back to balance. So when
- 33:54Speaker 5: you start to think about it, you realize that even
- 33:56Speaker 5: those couple of drinks in the week have got that
- 33:58Speaker 5: slight knock on effect for two or three days. But
- 34:00Speaker 5: then if you drink again at the weekend and there's
- 34:02Speaker 5: another two or three days, you're never escaping that trap. Therefore,
- 34:06Speaker 5: I believe alcohols like kryptonite to your dreams, kryptonite to
- 34:10Speaker 5: your performance. I think most people in the Western world
- 34:12Speaker 5: are underperforming in everything across the board, and they don't
- 34:16Speaker 5: even realize it because of that middle Lane drinking here.
- 34:20Speaker 4: Isn't it actually poison?
- 34:21Speaker 5: But yeah, it's It's a carston genic I mean, there's
- 34:23Speaker 5: no two ways about it. It's the same as asbestos,
- 34:26Speaker 5: same as radiation, the same as tobacco. It's a number
- 34:29Speaker 5: one castinogen when it breaks down into the body as
- 34:32Speaker 5: a product called a catelde hyde.
- 34:35Speaker 1: No, it's nuts. And also it's just it's just so
- 34:37Speaker 1: frustrating that it's it's it's just so part of the
- 34:40Speaker 1: culture and accept it. It's just and I didn't really
- 34:43Speaker 1: have this epiphany about it until I until I tried
- 34:47Speaker 1: not drinking it, and then I was like, wow, it's
- 34:49Speaker 1: just funny when you zoom out, like this is just
- 34:52Speaker 1: something we do as a society. This is this is
- 34:55Speaker 1: so promoted. I know you said, build big alcohols behind it.
- 34:58Speaker 1: I'd love to hear you talk more about that. We
- 34:59Speaker 1: know that just from growing up on Africais. I literally
- 35:02Speaker 1: I was a teenager. And if you remember, this is
- 35:03Speaker 1: how brilliant the marketing was. Absolute vodka had this amazing
- 35:08Speaker 1: campaign for years and years and years where they would
- 35:10Speaker 1: work the bottle into different forms of art and it
- 35:13Speaker 1: was in all the magazines I collected them all not
- 35:16Speaker 1: all because they're resilience. But I collected them and I
- 35:18Speaker 1: would put them on a wall in an outside my bedroom.
- 35:22Speaker 1: And my parents, you know, they were fine with it.
- 35:24Speaker 1: It was like, oh, he's collecting cool art. I had
- 35:27Speaker 1: like a wall of vodka ads on my wall because
- 35:31Speaker 1: I was so successfully marketed to as a teenager that
- 35:34Speaker 1: I was like, I didn't even know it. I was like, oh,
- 35:36Speaker 1: this is just pretty art. It's so cool what they
- 35:38Speaker 1: do with how they work the bottle into each even
- 35:40Speaker 1: advertisement I was. I had a collush of booze art
- 35:44Speaker 1: on my wall.
- 35:45Speaker 4: You know, it would have been really awesome if that's
- 35:47Speaker 4: what your drink of choice is.
- 35:52Speaker 1: Vodka was, oh, I would drink vodka. Ginger beer was
- 35:56Speaker 1: what they call the Moscow mule. That was my go
- 35:58Speaker 1: to drink.
- 36:00Speaker 4: But it got you good.
- 36:01Speaker 1: And I don't even like vodka. The taste of vodka,
- 36:03Speaker 1: I don't, you know, when you think about drinks, what
- 36:05Speaker 1: are we doing for the most part. I mean, I
- 36:06Speaker 1: know I'm not speaking for everyone, but for myself. You're
- 36:08Speaker 1: disguising the taste of the booze, right, You're trying to
- 36:10Speaker 1: give a delivery system to the booze, so it can
- 36:13Speaker 1: get into your bloodstream with a taste, so you mix
- 36:16Speaker 1: it with something right. For me, I like the taste
- 36:17Speaker 1: of ginger beer, so I would mix the alcohol with
- 36:20Speaker 1: ginger beer to hide how much I didn't like the
- 36:23Speaker 1: taste of vodka.
- 36:25Speaker 5: Yeah, I don't think that's your story for so many people,
- 36:27Speaker 5: isn't it? It's masks.
- 36:28Speaker 1: How do I get the delivery system into my blood?
- 36:30Speaker 1: I have to put orange juice with it. I have
- 36:32Speaker 1: to put cranbery juice with it. I have to put
- 36:33Speaker 1: you know, whatever you know, make it, Make it a margarita.
- 36:36Speaker 1: Don't give me tequila? Are you crazy? Making a margarita?
- 36:38Speaker 1: The taste with all that shit in it?
- 36:40Speaker 4: Right? You want me to drink that shit straight?
- 36:42Speaker 5: Right?
- 36:43Speaker 1: I look like you want me to drink that all right? Well,
- 36:46Speaker 1: put some sugar on the fucking rim.
- 36:48Speaker 5: Yeah, and then we bind to it. And then, you know,
- 36:51Speaker 5: even our first you know, drink of alcohol is awful,
- 36:54Speaker 5: isn't it. It tastes horrible. No one enjoys that, but we
- 36:57Speaker 5: train ourselves and oh yeah, elves through it to be
- 37:00Speaker 5: like out grun ups.
- 37:01Speaker 1: I remember the teenager being like, don't worry. One day
- 37:04Speaker 1: this beer will taste good. One day you're gonna get
- 37:07Speaker 1: past this hump.
- 37:09Speaker 4: Yeah, I remember. I remember thinking like that too, Like
- 37:12Speaker 4: this will all one day be just you.
- 37:16Speaker 1: Hold your nose. Just hold your nose, bro because one
- 37:19Speaker 1: day everyone says you get, you get, you start to
- 37:21Speaker 1: like the taste. Just hold your nose.
- 37:23Speaker 4: One day you're gonna crave this. One day you're gonna
- 37:26Speaker 4: quint This will quench your thirst. One day, I remember
- 37:28Speaker 4: thinking that ship drinking forties of only with my friends,
- 37:33Speaker 4: like this shit tastes nasty. We used to take grape
- 37:36Speaker 4: soda and put grape soda in English to taste it,
- 37:42Speaker 4: to make that ship taste good, y'all, I remember that
- 37:44Speaker 4: Shiitish eight hundred.
- 37:46Speaker 1: We're gonna take a break. I'm sure a lot of
- 37:48Speaker 1: people are asking I have questions, and I have some
- 37:51Speaker 1: of the One is okay, Andy, I'm interested. How do
- 37:54Speaker 1: I even try this?
- 37:55Speaker 5: Help me?
- 37:56Speaker 1: And I have another couple of questions. So we'll be
- 37:58Speaker 1: right back after these fine words. All right, So Andy,
- 38:11Speaker 1: I'm sure there's people listening who are thinking a couple
- 38:13Speaker 1: of things. If I was listening, I would think, okay,
- 38:15Speaker 1: I'm intrigued. I don't Let's just pick a person type
- 38:19Speaker 1: a person type A says, I don't want to be
- 38:21Speaker 1: necessarily sober forever. I'd like to have an occasional drink.
- 38:25Speaker 1: I enjoy having a glass of wine here and there.
- 38:27Speaker 1: But I am curious about your challenge and taking a
- 38:29Speaker 1: break and seeing how I feel. How the hell do
- 38:32Speaker 1: I do that? Andy, what is your advice?
- 38:35Speaker 5: First and foremost, if you look at the calendar, and
- 38:37Speaker 5: that's what most people do, They're like, I can't do it.
- 38:40Speaker 5: I've got the wedding, I've got the birthday, I've got
- 38:42Speaker 5: the leaving do this is impossible, There's there's nowhere, there's
- 38:45Speaker 5: no space for me to do this. So first and foremost,
- 38:48Speaker 5: I think just start. Begin as long as it's safe
- 38:50Speaker 5: to do so. You're a middle lane drinker and there's
- 38:54Speaker 5: a little caveat there that has to come in. But
- 38:56Speaker 5: this again exposes alcohol at it's worse. If someone is
- 39:00Speaker 5: drinking too much, you can become physically dependent on howcohol. Therefore,
- 39:04Speaker 5: to stop it to abruptly can be lethal.
- 39:06Speaker 1: All right, we should just clarify. We should clarify for safety.
- 39:08Speaker 1: Here two things. One, if you you probably know if
- 39:12Speaker 1: you're not what Andy's talking about, and you need a
- 39:14Speaker 1: program and you need AA or the like, and that's
- 39:19Speaker 1: not really obviously listen to this message as well, but
- 39:23Speaker 1: Andy's really speaking more to the casual drinker who But
- 39:27Speaker 1: by the way, this must, this must enlighten a lot
- 39:29Speaker 1: of people, because if you can't do it, that's also enlightening.
- 39:32Speaker 5: Isn't it Exactly? It's almost an early warning system for
- 39:35Speaker 5: many people.
- 39:35Speaker 1: This is.
- 39:36Speaker 5: But we're talking to the middle lane, the average drinker,
- 39:38Speaker 5: the moderate drinker, the sometimes not at all drinker, the
- 39:41Speaker 5: sometimes heavy drinker, is the middle lane. And I think
- 39:44Speaker 5: the best thing to do is start. Start now what
- 39:47Speaker 5: you're waiting for? Why would you wait for an opportunity
- 39:50Speaker 5: to be fitter, faster, healthier, to get your time back,
- 39:52Speaker 5: your energy back, for your skin to glow, to get
- 39:55Speaker 5: your motivation back, to discover what it's like to be
- 39:58Speaker 5: one hundred percent again imagine that, you know. That's my message,
- 40:02Speaker 5: is what are we waiting for to get started to today?
- 40:06Speaker 5: And equally, if you've got those big things in your
- 40:08Speaker 5: diary which you've always got in there between the birthdays,
- 40:11Speaker 5: between the Christmases, between the holiday seasons or the holidays,
- 40:15Speaker 5: they are very often the best time to start because
- 40:19Speaker 5: when you come out the other side of the wedding
- 40:21Speaker 5: and you've done sober and you've ticked that box, or
- 40:25Speaker 5: you've had that big weekend with your friends, and actually
- 40:28Speaker 5: you realize you were way sharper, You had a better time.
- 40:31Speaker 5: You felt amazing the next day, and you look incredible
- 40:34Speaker 5: the next day, and people are starting to comment on
- 40:36Speaker 5: how you look and how you are. There's some of
- 40:38Speaker 5: the best motivational.
- 40:40Speaker 1: Reasons to continue in your journey.
- 40:42Speaker 5: So I think they're a great place to start. Join
- 40:45Speaker 5: a community. You know, I'm biased. We have an appical
- 40:47Speaker 5: Dry with an extra y.
- 40:49Speaker 1: Dry is an app they can get dry with an
- 40:52Speaker 1: extra y.
- 40:53Speaker 5: Yeah, dryy. It's free to download. We have the most incredible,
- 40:58Speaker 5: beautiful community that's global in I'm live in there most days.
- 41:01Speaker 5: It's a live apt of beautiful people just inspire each
- 41:04Speaker 5: other to take a break.
- 41:06Speaker 1: Right, And that's a community. And there's challenges in there
- 41:08Speaker 1: where you can do a month or three months or whatever. Right.
- 41:11Speaker 5: Yeah, it's a really beautiful space. And I think what's
- 41:14Speaker 5: important about that is that when you decide to take
- 41:16Speaker 5: a break, very often it's a solo mission, isn't it.
- 41:18Speaker 5: Because we're also beautifully different, Like my wife still drinks.
- 41:21Speaker 5: Most of my best mates still drink, most people I
- 41:24Speaker 5: know still drink. It was my personal choice to take
- 41:27Speaker 5: a break, So I think what happens to a lot
- 41:28Speaker 5: of people. They decide to take a break, and then
- 41:31Speaker 5: none of their friends are doing the same, and then
- 41:32Speaker 5: it's much harder.
- 41:33Speaker 4: So I think that's the same for me.
- 41:35Speaker 1: I mean, I go out with online buddies and again
- 41:38Speaker 1: I don't I want them just clarify, I don't know
- 41:40Speaker 1: that I'm sober for life. I don't want to be
- 41:43Speaker 1: pasturing like I am. I'm enjoying playing with this and
- 41:46Speaker 1: really and do notice all the changes he's talking about,
- 41:49Speaker 1: feeling better, less depression, less anxiety. People come up to
- 41:52Speaker 1: me and they're like, you look great. What's different. The
- 41:54Speaker 1: only thing that's different is I stop drinking and feeling
- 42:00Speaker 1: already not having any hangovers, like.
- 42:02Speaker 4: Not having whiskey Dick anymore.
- 42:06Speaker 1: I was about to say the ad villain, the advilla
- 42:08Speaker 1: in my cupboard has dust on it, like, I'm so
- 42:11Speaker 1: proud of the fact that advil is not a regular
- 42:14Speaker 1: part of my life anymore.
- 42:15Speaker 4: And not having whiskey Dick.
- 42:18Speaker 1: I'm not. That might be your issue, Donald, but my
- 42:21Speaker 1: penis is so strong.
- 42:22Speaker 4: That it.
- 42:24Speaker 1: Was able to I don't want to talk about my
- 42:26Speaker 1: penis in front of Andy Donald. He's a very important.
- 42:30Speaker 4: And he was going to talk about that. When I
- 42:32Speaker 4: said that, he was like, that's true. Once I stopped.
- 42:34Speaker 4: I saw it in his face. He was going to
- 42:36Speaker 4: be like, once I stopped drinking, my big got He's
- 42:39Speaker 4: an Englishman.
- 42:40Speaker 1: They don't he's proper. They don't talk about something alright,
- 42:47Speaker 1: so dry the app and I want to say, there's
- 42:49Speaker 1: an app I used called I Am Sober. That's just
- 42:53Speaker 1: a really a counter that's that's fun because you kind
- 42:58Speaker 1: of there's this is a doctor Fader thing. I'm a
- 43:01Speaker 1: cognitive behaviorist. I work with Andy who we had on
- 43:04Speaker 1: the show, who's just very into the idea of a
- 43:06Speaker 1: streak and the I Am Sober app or other counter apps,
- 43:10Speaker 1: or you can really just mark off days on a
- 43:12Speaker 1: paper calendar if you want to do it. The easiest
- 43:14Speaker 1: way is just sort of showing you like your streak
- 43:17Speaker 1: and you don't want to fuck up your streak. You know,
- 43:18Speaker 1: it's like anything, you know, just like a little kid
- 43:21Speaker 1: who's getting stickers on a calendar for using the toilet.
- 43:25Speaker 1: You know, you want to you want to keep your
- 43:27Speaker 1: streak going. You want your sticker, you want your you
- 43:29Speaker 1: want your little the little thing that happens on I
- 43:31Speaker 1: am sober when you reach thirty days and it does
- 43:33Speaker 1: a dance. You know, it's just very you know, our
- 43:37Speaker 1: brains love the affirmation and uh and that's been helpful
- 43:40Speaker 1: to me.
- 43:41Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 43:41Speaker 5: And what I'd also say about that, I think I
- 43:43Speaker 5: recommend streaking with a twist, not to be confused with
- 43:47Speaker 5: naked twister. That's a whole different game. Yeah, streaking with
- 43:50Speaker 5: a twist. And what I mean by that is, if
- 43:52Speaker 5: it doesn't quite work out, market is a blip and.
- 43:55Speaker 1: Keep Yeah, don't stop, don't stop.
- 43:57Speaker 5: Yeah, because that snakes and ladders sometimes you go back
- 43:59Speaker 5: today we have shoots.
- 44:01Speaker 1: And ladders, not snakes and ladders. But we do have
- 44:03Speaker 1: a large English audience that will know what do you
- 44:06Speaker 1: call it? Snakes and ladders?
- 44:07Speaker 4: Yes, that's a kid's board game, isn't it? Yes?
- 44:11Speaker 1: But in our country, Donald, you might know it as
- 44:13Speaker 1: shoots and ladder.
- 44:14Speaker 4: Oh no, I remember shooting remember Candy Land.
- 44:16Speaker 1: Yes, but that's off topic, Donald, Okay, stay on topic.
- 44:20Speaker 5: Let's stay on topic. So what else can we do?
- 44:23Speaker 5: Streak with a twist? Join an alcohol free community, and
- 44:26Speaker 5: then I think, immerse yourself in the winds the benefits.
- 44:29Speaker 5: This has been my approach for ten years. The message
- 44:31Speaker 5: that I've been banging on about is celebrate the winds.
- 44:34Speaker 5: There's nothing to give up and everything to gain. And
- 44:37Speaker 5: I think if you keep that focus in mind, it's
- 44:39Speaker 5: really important because there's periods throughout the year where people
- 44:41Speaker 5: take a break from alcohol, and very often they do
- 44:44Speaker 5: so begrudgingly. And it's like, right, I'm going to do
- 44:46Speaker 5: a month off and I'm going to knock myself away
- 44:48Speaker 5: and I'm not going to see anyone. It's going to
- 44:50Speaker 5: be shut right, and I'm going to remind myself as
- 44:52Speaker 5: to why I should be drinking because this month's been
- 44:54Speaker 5: absolutely terrible. I'm the opposite, go and celebrate all the
- 44:58Speaker 5: benefits of being alcohol free. What does it feel like
- 45:00Speaker 5: to be up a bit earlier? What does it feel
- 45:02Speaker 5: like to see your skin glow, to be a little
- 45:04Speaker 5: bit less grumpy, to be more consistent in your nutrition,
- 45:07Speaker 5: Maybe you lose some weight, maybe you perform a bit better.
- 45:10Speaker 5: Keep your eyes on all those benefits. That's unbelievably motivational
- 45:14Speaker 5: for people, I think incredibly important. So that's my approach.
- 45:17Speaker 5: And then also the world has changed with the alcohol
- 45:21Speaker 5: free alternatives. I think they're incredible for the middle lane drinker.
- 45:24Speaker 5: You know, you feel grown up.
- 45:25Speaker 1: They've got that on my tails. It's funny. My go
- 45:28Speaker 1: too is always just getting a ginger beer because I
- 45:30Speaker 1: genuinely like ginger beer. I like the taste of it.
- 45:33Speaker 1: Most bars have it feels like you're kind of having
- 45:35Speaker 1: a drink. I save it for those times when I'm
- 45:37Speaker 1: going out with people and it's like, oh, that's my
- 45:39Speaker 1: that's my go to. And then in La especially, there's
- 45:42Speaker 1: just so many people sober that they have now they
- 45:44Speaker 1: have these whole drink menus that are like someone a
- 45:46Speaker 1: waiter to me was like, you sure you want a
- 45:48Speaker 1: ginger beer. You don't want this concoction. And I was like,
- 45:50Speaker 1: oh shit, yeah, give me that. And it came and
- 45:52Speaker 1: it was amazing, and it felt like a drink. I
- 45:55Speaker 1: mean it was like had a honey in it and
- 45:56Speaker 1: had all these ingredients in it. Because that you know, again,
- 45:59Speaker 1: we live in LA and or New York where where
- 46:02Speaker 1: there's a lot of that.
- 46:04Speaker 4: But they watched the sugar too, because that also has
- 46:06Speaker 4: a lot to do with the concoctions that are made
- 46:09Speaker 4: aren't like freaking fruit punch and orange juice and you know.
- 46:14Speaker 1: Right, But I'm saying, if you're having one, you're giving yourself,
- 46:17Speaker 1: Like I think you can be proud enough that you're
- 46:19Speaker 1: not not aboozing, that you can enjoy a little bit
- 46:22Speaker 1: of sugar in your drink. Hell, I treated myself to
- 46:24Speaker 1: a pine of Ben and Jerry's yesterday because that was
- 46:26Speaker 1: my reward.
- 46:28Speaker 4: That's a whole different.
- 46:29Speaker 1: I'll call is the dumbest use of calories. Let's just
- 46:31Speaker 1: be honest. It is. You know, it is so stupid.
- 46:35Speaker 1: It is weightless, and it's just it's just drinking poison
- 46:38Speaker 1: and putting calories on your body. It is the dumbest
- 46:40Speaker 1: use of of of lots of calories.
- 46:43Speaker 5: And we have you know, pints in the UK or
- 46:46Speaker 5: a strong pint of beer is the equivalent to a
- 46:49Speaker 5: hot dog and fries.
- 46:50Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, and Guinness too. I remember I usually I
- 46:53Speaker 1: was in a phase where I was drinking Guinness. Guinness
- 46:55Speaker 1: has so many fucking CALORIESA like a milkshake, you might
- 46:59Speaker 1: as well have a milk chick.
- 47:01Speaker 4: I fucking do want a milkshake right now. I'm not
- 47:03Speaker 4: gonna lie about that.
- 47:04Speaker 1: Have a milkshake, that's the thing. Would you rather have
- 47:06Speaker 1: a milkshake than a Guinness? Some people are like fuck no, now, Andy.
- 47:14Speaker 1: One thing the Hubberman had on his podcast, this whole
- 47:17Speaker 1: thing for those of you who don't know, he's like
- 47:19Speaker 1: the top health kind of podcaster these days, and he
- 47:24Speaker 1: had a thing that finally put to rest any of
- 47:26Speaker 1: this notion that there was any health benefits at all
- 47:29Speaker 1: to alcohol, because for a while people were like, oh no.
- 47:32Speaker 1: On the web and in research it says that a
- 47:35Speaker 1: glass of red wine is fine a day. Is that
- 47:38Speaker 1: that's been disproven correct.
- 47:40Speaker 5: Completely, So the World Health Organization has come out clearly
- 47:43Speaker 5: and said there is no safe limit. There can't be.
- 47:45Speaker 5: It's a castnogen. But what you can imagine then, we've
- 47:49Speaker 5: seen it with climate change, we've seen it with nutrition,
- 47:51Speaker 5: we saw it with tobacco. Most definitely, it would be
- 47:54Speaker 5: in the interest to promote certain studies designed to confuse people.
- 47:58Speaker 5: You know, and you see it at the time people
- 47:59Speaker 5: are con when they're confused, they continue to do what
- 48:02Speaker 5: they've always done, which in this instance is drink. So
- 48:05Speaker 5: you'll see something like a red wine study or a
- 48:07Speaker 5: whisky a day or whatever it is on one drink
- 48:09Speaker 5: a day. But if you peel back the layers of
- 48:12Speaker 5: those studies the World Health Organization, it's very clear, so
- 48:15Speaker 5: you'll see the sleight of hand. Then it will be
- 48:17Speaker 5: less risky drinking because they can't say anymore that it
- 48:20Speaker 5: is safe at these levels. Red wine is a brilliant
- 48:24Speaker 5: example of that. And the way I look at it
- 48:26Speaker 5: is this type of an analogy. There might be some
- 48:28Speaker 5: benefits from the antioxidants in the grapes, but just drink
- 48:32Speaker 5: grape juice, like why dance with the devil. It's a
- 48:34Speaker 5: little bit like saying there's a swimming pool, and if
- 48:37Speaker 5: you swim to the end of that swimming pool, it's
- 48:39Speaker 5: good for you, right aerobic exercise. But by the way,
- 48:42Speaker 5: in that swimming pool are loads of ravenu sharks. It's
- 48:45Speaker 5: the same thing. You just wouldn't swim in it, would you.
- 48:47Speaker 5: And that, I think is as similar with the red
- 48:49Speaker 5: wine being good for you, or alcohol a certain level
- 48:52Speaker 5: being good for you. Why would you ever get in
- 48:53Speaker 5: that poll full of ravenus sharks? Just you exercise without it.
- 48:58Speaker 4: Sharks can't live in a pool.
- 49:01Speaker 1: He was talking about. He wasking about salinate a salinated
- 49:04Speaker 1: fool Donald, it was a pool for sharks. It wasn't.
- 49:10Speaker 4: Let's take a break.
- 49:11Speaker 1: We'll be right back after these fine words.
- 49:21Speaker 3: Too.
- 49:21Speaker 1: Well, do you have any questions while I'm thinking of
- 49:23Speaker 1: any other good ones for him?
- 49:25Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 49:26Speaker 3: My questions were, so after you made this big change
- 49:30Speaker 3: and it's changed your whole life, and now you're not
- 49:33Speaker 3: just bringing it to people, but you're training other people
- 49:36Speaker 3: on how to like dispense this information.
- 49:40Speaker 2: You do like life coach training, Right, how did you
- 49:42Speaker 2: get into that? And then like.
- 49:45Speaker 3: To me, I think like I do a lot of
- 49:46Speaker 3: run a mentorship program at iHeart, and it's been like
- 49:49Speaker 3: one of the most fulfilling things of my life. Has
- 49:51Speaker 3: completely changed how I cracked my projects. I find myself
- 49:55Speaker 3: giving them lessons where I'm like, I need to document
- 49:57Speaker 3: that for myself and do for myself. And I was
- 49:58Speaker 3: just wondering, like teaching people how to life coach, how
- 50:02Speaker 3: has that impacted your life?
- 50:04Speaker 5: Yeah, And that's a lovely question because a big part
- 50:06Speaker 5: of what I do now is coaching and that all
- 50:09Speaker 5: came from the experience of taking a break from alcohol.
- 50:12Speaker 5: So I was a broker back in the day, and
- 50:14Speaker 5: over the last ten years have gravitated away from that
- 50:16Speaker 5: because I think when someone goes on this alcohol free
- 50:19Speaker 5: adventure or spends time on the fun side of the island,
- 50:22Speaker 5: like I like to describe it, there's essentially want to
- 50:24Speaker 5: give it back, you know that real I didn't know
- 50:26Speaker 5: what it was.
- 50:26Speaker 4: It was this tug to.
- 50:27Speaker 5: Give this thing back, which led me into training as
- 50:30Speaker 5: a coach, which led me on this beautiful journey of
- 50:33Speaker 5: now I train coaches, executive coaches, business coaches, life coaches,
- 50:37Speaker 5: but then add the specialism of alcohol free performance coaching
- 50:40Speaker 5: because what I've figured out is, over all these years
- 50:42Speaker 5: and I've been so lucky, I've trained some amazing actors, actresses,
- 50:46Speaker 5: some of the best in the business, athletes, and always
- 50:50Speaker 5: the foundation of alcohol free performance training because what I
- 50:53Speaker 5: figured out is if they're middle lane drinkers and they
- 50:55Speaker 5: take a break, they're going to get amazing results.
- 50:58Speaker 4: Anyway, So I.
- 50:59Speaker 5: Look like a bit of a here. Oh they get
- 51:00Speaker 5: incredible results really because they've just stopped drinking. Plus you know,
- 51:04Speaker 5: there's a bit of coaching around it, but that helps
- 51:06Speaker 5: people get great results. So it's a big part of
- 51:08Speaker 5: what I do now is actually help other people and
- 51:10Speaker 5: train them to do exactly the same thing. To share
- 51:12Speaker 5: this message far and wide is the mission.
- 51:15Speaker 1: Well, I want to thank you because you really did
- 51:17Speaker 1: make a difference in my life. I am one of
- 51:19Speaker 1: those people who heard you, and I'm hoping all of
- 51:21Speaker 1: the hundreds of thousands of people that will hear this
- 51:25Speaker 1: within there, there's a group of people that are going
- 51:27Speaker 1: to try this and it will make a difference in
- 51:29Speaker 1: their life. And I really did feel I really do
- 51:32Speaker 1: as I'm playing with this and taking on this challenge,
- 51:36Speaker 1: I really do feel better, most importantly in my mental health.
- 51:40Speaker 4: That's really important.
- 51:41Speaker 1: And you, yeah, that's one thing I just want to
- 51:43Speaker 1: talk about. We talked about the physical things, but I
- 51:46Speaker 1: noticeably feel less anxious and less depressed as someone who
- 51:50Speaker 1: battles those things. And I just want to acknowledge you
- 51:54Speaker 1: for being an advocate for this because some people will
- 51:58Speaker 1: hear this and go great. Not for me, but there
- 52:00Speaker 1: are that are going to hear it and go let
- 52:02Speaker 1: me try, let me, let me see what they're talking about.
- 52:04Speaker 1: And I just want to thank you for being so
- 52:07Speaker 1: vocal about it all.
- 52:09Speaker 5: Yeah, and that's that's lovely to hear. And what is
- 52:11Speaker 5: wonderful for me is more people like yourself with your
- 52:14Speaker 5: incredible profile sharing a new message because it is a
- 52:17Speaker 5: fresh message about taking breaks from alcohol as more of
- 52:21Speaker 5: a middle lane drinker. And I think that's such an
- 52:22Speaker 5: important message to share because for years we've had that
- 52:25Speaker 5: one story. It's been very black and white when it
- 52:26Speaker 5: comes to alcohol. You've ever got a problem or you have.
- 52:30Speaker 1: I think you were the first person I ever has
- 52:32Speaker 1: speak on it so eloquently, and that's exactly what it was.
- 52:34Speaker 1: And you just did it again, because that's what it was.
- 52:36Speaker 1: It was in my life, it was you either have
- 52:39Speaker 1: a problem and need AA or another program, or you
- 52:42Speaker 1: don't drink or whatever, and then and then or you're
- 52:46Speaker 1: just a middle lane person. And there was no there
- 52:49Speaker 1: was no message for the middle lane people ever.
- 52:53Speaker 4: And now even when you go to your doctor, your
- 52:55Speaker 4: doctors even like how many drinks do you have a week? Two?
- 52:58Speaker 4: You're good, don't worry about it.
- 52:59Speaker 1: Yeah, everyone's lying when they say two too.
- 53:02Speaker 4: Yeah. Truth.
- 53:06Speaker 1: But no one ever addressed like to to me like, hey,
- 53:10Speaker 1: I never had it, I never digested it until I
- 53:12Speaker 1: heard you in such a way that was like, why
- 53:15Speaker 1: don't you see what happens after a month? Then see
- 53:18Speaker 1: what happens after two months, do this experiment. What if
- 53:22Speaker 1: you're you're on any depressants, or you're battling anxiety, or
- 53:27Speaker 1: you're battling your weight, what about just doing the easiest
- 53:31Speaker 1: thing you can do, which is an experiment, remove alcohol
- 53:34Speaker 1: for a month, three months, just see how you feel.
- 53:38Speaker 1: Just clock it.
- 53:39Speaker 5: Yeah, it's so powerful and that is the message. I
- 53:42Speaker 5: genuinely believe it. We look at people that are suffering
- 53:45Speaker 5: from anxiety, a depression. Of course, it's not a panacea
- 53:47Speaker 5: for all those things, but it certainly cleared it up.
- 53:49Speaker 5: For me. I was suffering from anxiety, full blown panic
- 53:52Speaker 5: attacks at time. I removed alcohol. That disappeared out my life.
- 53:56Speaker 5: And you know, someone that's experienced that, it's stabilitating and
- 54:00Speaker 5: it went, it vanished for me. I see that all
- 54:03Speaker 5: the time in our relationships. There's research out of Ireland
- 54:06Speaker 5: that suggests fifty percent of all relationship problems are down
- 54:09Speaker 5: to alcohol. You know, our relationship counsel's the first thing
- 54:12Speaker 5: they should do is have you tried taking a break
- 54:15Speaker 5: from alcohol? Someone that's suffering with their mental health? Have
- 54:18Speaker 5: you tried taken a break from alcohol? Someone that wants
- 54:20Speaker 5: to perform better in their job? Have you taken a
- 54:23Speaker 5: breakrom malcol, be a better parent, be a better partner.
- 54:27Speaker 5: Let's just take a break from alcohol. I genuinely could
- 54:29Speaker 5: list everything.
- 54:30Speaker 1: I heard a guy who said the reason he stopped
- 54:33Speaker 1: drinking was I wanted to be the best parent I
- 54:34Speaker 1: could be. And I knew that if I was going
- 54:37Speaker 1: to do that with occasional hangovers and fogginess and grumpiness,
- 54:40Speaker 1: that wasn't going to be me. And I didn't want
- 54:42Speaker 1: to be that at all. I wanted to just show
- 54:44Speaker 1: up one hundred percent. And I thought that was really
- 54:46Speaker 1: cool thing he said.
- 54:48Speaker 5: So powerful, and it is so true, be an even
- 54:51Speaker 5: better parent, even better at the job. I just think
- 54:53Speaker 5: it's this foundational thing that benty anyone's talking about.
- 54:55Speaker 1: I know, and you are, and I really that's why
- 54:58Speaker 1: I wanted to share your mess sage. It's funny you
- 55:01Speaker 1: say about I've been watching this really stupid reality show
- 55:04Speaker 1: that that I'm obsessed with. It's called below Deck right.
- 55:07Speaker 4: Oh now it's stupid. The other day below it's below Deck.
- 55:12Speaker 1: They feel bad I feel although I'm during the strike,
- 55:15Speaker 1: I'm all, they would prefer I promote a reality show
- 55:18Speaker 1: than a scripted show. So I will just say but
- 55:20Speaker 1: here's and it's just it's just fun. It's it's it's
- 55:23Speaker 1: it's a stupid reality show. It is. It's a but
- 55:25Speaker 1: but here's one thing I saw, just from someone who's
- 55:27Speaker 1: experimenting with not drinking. You're watching this show, right, and
- 55:30Speaker 1: granted it's a heightened reality. They're meant to drink and
- 55:33Speaker 1: party and and get into hijinks, but every I'm laughing.
- 55:36Speaker 1: I'm sitting there laughing to myself, going, every single one
- 55:39Speaker 1: of these problems that these people are having is related
- 55:41Speaker 1: to alcohol. They go out, they get hammered, they make
- 55:44Speaker 1: bad choices, they hook up with someone they're not supposed to,
- 55:46Speaker 1: They get in fights. The next day, they're hungover, they
- 55:48Speaker 1: have to work, they're grumpy, they're crying, they're calling their mom,
- 55:50Speaker 1: they're sad, they're homesick. The captain's mad at them because
- 55:53Speaker 1: they're not performing. And I'm sitting there laughing, going, you
- 55:55Speaker 1: realize this wouldn't even be a show if they pulled
- 55:58Speaker 1: out the alcohol like they're they're there's no show.
- 56:01Speaker 4: No show, and there have a dream brow they are.
- 56:05Speaker 1: But I'm saying, like all of the drama and this
- 56:08Speaker 1: is just in a heightened reality reality show, obviously, but
- 56:10Speaker 1: all of the drama and all of their crying and
- 56:13Speaker 1: all of their fights and all of their shame is
- 56:16Speaker 1: solely removed when you pull alcohol out of the show.
- 56:20Speaker 1: That's just a microcosm of society, right, Bachelor and.
- 56:24Speaker 4: Paradise, Bachelor in Paradise without that bar, real talk.
- 56:31Speaker 5: And this is the thing, isn't it? That is a
- 56:32Speaker 5: reflection of real life, rightave it. People are suffering on
- 56:38Speaker 5: a huge scale and they've got no idea that actually
- 56:41Speaker 5: it's alcohol. They're looking in all the wrong places, their ice, barfing,
- 56:44Speaker 5: and they're trying to do all these other beautiful things
- 56:46Speaker 5: while still you know, colffing veno collapso like it's going
- 56:50Speaker 5: out of fashion and wondering why they feel a bit down,
- 56:52Speaker 5: a bit deflated.
- 56:53Speaker 4: They're as.
- 56:55Speaker 1: Just remove our final message and thank you so much
- 56:58Speaker 1: for coming on is just if you, if you're curious,
- 57:02Speaker 1: try this out. You can go to the dry app,
- 57:04Speaker 1: dr y y or very simply. The way I used
- 57:08Speaker 1: to do this when I would take a month or
- 57:09Speaker 1: two off is just get a paper calendar and I
- 57:11Speaker 1: would buy stickers and every day I didn't drink and
- 57:13Speaker 1: put a sticker on the calendar and that's a very
- 57:16Speaker 1: simple way to do it, and and just you know,
- 57:18Speaker 1: try it for a month and just see how you feel.
- 57:20Speaker 1: You'll feel better. There's there's no way you're not going
- 57:22Speaker 1: to feel better. That's that feeling. There's not an option.
- 57:26Speaker 1: I don't think that you wouldn't feel better.
- 57:29Speaker 5: Yeah, and it's it's so true, And that's my message.
- 57:31Speaker 5: It's just try it. Imagine if all of those results
- 57:34Speaker 5: and benefits that we've all shared tonight are waiting for
- 57:36Speaker 5: you, you won't known to try.
- 57:39Speaker 4: You know what this is really for. This message is
- 57:41Speaker 4: really for a person that's out there. It's like, but dude,
- 57:45Speaker 4: I barely drink. Yeah, that's who this message is for
- 57:49Speaker 4: right now, you listening right now? That thought that immediately
- 57:53Speaker 4: when you heard this, Dude, I barely drink. I think
- 57:57Speaker 4: the message for you.
- 57:57Speaker 1: I think the message is also for someone who I
- 58:00Speaker 1: guess what I wish someone had said directly to me,
- 58:02Speaker 1: and you did in a lot of ways, Andy, but
- 58:04Speaker 1: the tailor made for me would be you're trying all
- 58:08Speaker 1: of these things. You're trying therapy, you're trying exercise, you're
- 58:11Speaker 1: trying cold plunge, you're trying sauna, you're trying meditation, all
- 58:15Speaker 1: of these things to feel better. You're forgetting the thing,
- 58:20Speaker 1: the depressant that you're drinking several times a week. You're
- 58:23Speaker 1: forgetting the poison that several times a week you're injecting
- 58:26Speaker 1: into your bloodstream. Why haven't you tried removing that?
- 58:30Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 58:31Speaker 5: There is That's it, and I think that's the big message.
- 58:34Speaker 5: Do it for a while and if you feel great,
- 58:36Speaker 5: keep going.
- 58:37Speaker 4: Andy, we are you're trying to pitch freaking advertising campaign
- 58:41Speaker 4: slogans for you, Zach and I here, you know who
- 58:44Speaker 4: this message is, for this message, for this persion, Zach,
- 58:47Speaker 4: sit you tried this, You tried.
- 58:49Speaker 1: That's honest.
- 58:50Speaker 4: I'm not pitching anything.
- 58:52Speaker 1: I don't have any fucking thing to gain other than
- 58:54Speaker 1: hopefully helping other people in a way that Andy on
- 58:56Speaker 1: the Ritual podcast helped me. That's my only hope. So dude,
- 59:00Speaker 1: thank you so much, Andy for coming on, and we
- 59:02Speaker 1: appreciate you.
- 59:03Speaker 5: Thank you, Sane for having me.
- 59:05Speaker 1: All right, thunderus applause, Donald's.
- 59:07Speaker 4: Daniel Daniel is getting married right now. I'm sorry you
- 59:11Speaker 4: missed us.
- 59:12Speaker 1: Daniel's getting hammered right now, is right now? We speak
- 59:16Speaker 1: as we speak, all right, Anie, thank you so much,
- 59:18Speaker 1: thank you, brother.
- 59:19Speaker 4: A great guest's grateful, very inspirational.
- 59:23Speaker 1: I know that's why I wanted to share. I wanted
- 59:25Speaker 1: to share him because because he speaks so eloquently on
- 59:28Speaker 1: the topic and h and he's just a really wonderful person.
- 59:33Speaker 1: All right, that's our show. Everybody, Joelle, anything we need
