- 0:00[SPEAKER_00]: Hey guys, Guy here with a podcast.
- 0:03[SPEAKER_00]: A few things coming up on the show today.
- 0:05[SPEAKER_00]: Reaction to the forty-anter's first padded practice on Monday.
- 0:11[SPEAKER_00]: Producer Connor just wrote an article.
- 0:14[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't know about this till he sent it to me today, but I had some interesting stuff in it, so he comes on and
- 0:21[SPEAKER_00]: give some perspective and ask me some questions about what I'm looking for from Niners Camp after I give you some of those reactions plus John Gruden wants back in and the man once viewed as the alternative to Debo Samuel gets cut that's coming up
- 0:38[SPEAKER_00]: Right now, normally I try to, you know, record something right after practice from a parking garage or a parking lot.
- 0:46[SPEAKER_00]: But the audio is never as good for the podcast people.
- 0:49[SPEAKER_00]: I did that Friday because over the weekend, podcast aren't as important as during the week podcast.
- 0:55[SPEAKER_00]: So I wanted to hit a few things that stood out from Wednesday and Brock, pretty return.
- 1:00[SPEAKER_00]: Pads came on, you know, since I was last out there, no John Jennings with a calf, Ronaldo Green with a hammy.
- 1:07[SPEAKER_00]: We already had the Jacob Cowling injury, not good too many injuries for my taste.
- 1:12[SPEAKER_00]: Jennings, you know, a calf again.
- 1:15[SPEAKER_00]: We're not a green right when it's really getting important for him to get reps.
- 1:19[SPEAKER_00]: not great, but I just want to hit a few things and some overarching and some specifics left my practice notes back at Levi's Stadium, so probably gonna forget some stuff.
- 1:30[SPEAKER_00]: But good to see Ricky Pierce all back, not a big take, nothing much to say.
- 1:35[SPEAKER_00]: They're good to see him back, stack a day, be out there Tuesday, be out there again Thursday.
- 1:40[SPEAKER_00]: You know, all that stuff's really important for him, but he looks like he's moving well, he's important
- 1:46[SPEAKER_00]: maybe he'll be dynamic you know there's a few guys that like look like they have a chance to be dynamic we've seen the winners before he is dynamic Nick Martin looks like he's got a real chance if you watch him athletically to be dynamic but but the receivers and the and the linebackers like these are guys that you I think you got to take with a grain of salt before they get in the games you know I if you made a list of like
- 2:11[SPEAKER_00]: Not of like if you made a list of let's watch some preseason games what do we want to see let's watch real games what do we want to see I know there's a lot of deep winners looks good which is fair Nick Martin like they both look good but we've seen the winners look good and then get into games and miss miss run fit and overrun holes so
- 2:34[SPEAKER_00]: a rookie like Nick Martin, there's just a lot to learn.
- 2:37[SPEAKER_00]: It's moving very quickly.
- 2:39[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's a baseline.
- 2:41[SPEAKER_00]: What it looks like is two guys that either going to contribute because athletically they can't be.
- 2:46[SPEAKER_00]: They just they're going to have to.
- 2:47[SPEAKER_00]: Now a lot of other options.
- 2:48[SPEAKER_00]: So that's good.
- 2:49[SPEAKER_00]: They're both going to play.
- 2:51[SPEAKER_00]: Who's the starter probably matters a little bit less because they're both going to play.
- 2:54[SPEAKER_00]: You have to lean with the guy that's played NFL games before.
- 2:58[SPEAKER_00]: DeWinters, but again, I got to see these guys.
- 3:01[SPEAKER_00]: You got to see Ricky Pierce all.
- 3:03[SPEAKER_00]: I'll tell you the one guy, you know, a veteran player, you don't need to see as much.
- 3:08[SPEAKER_00]: And I did a video, I don't know, a month or two ago, about the free agent receiver, the Marcus Robinson, who every, all the fully managed reporters are reporting that that is expecting that he's going to be suspended for the first three weeks based on a previous, you know, no contest plan to DUI.
- 3:26[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't
- 3:27[SPEAKER_00]: You know, he's not a headline guy.
- 3:29[SPEAKER_00]: I expect him to be a really productive player for them.
- 3:32[SPEAKER_00]: They're going to need him to be.
- 3:33[SPEAKER_00]: I think he's going to be.
- 3:34[SPEAKER_00]: He has been.
- 3:35[SPEAKER_00]: I think he's going to plug right in.
- 3:37[SPEAKER_00]: Didn't know what to expect.
- 3:38[SPEAKER_00]: I hadn't even thought much about him since I did that video coming into practices.
- 3:43[SPEAKER_00]: I really like the way he practices.
- 3:44[SPEAKER_00]: So just one note, you know, the receivers.
- 3:46[SPEAKER_00]: There's just a lack of real pros in the forty knives receiver group.
- 3:51[SPEAKER_00]: It's it's really stunning to see because it's just
- 3:56[SPEAKER_00]: But as I said, before John Jennings cat hurt, there's only one guy who's healthy, experienced, productive, and not going to be suspended for the first three weeks.
- 4:06[SPEAKER_00]: And that's John Jennings.
- 4:07[SPEAKER_00]: Well, there's no guys.
- 4:08[SPEAKER_00]: Now, there are no guys in the wide receiver room who are all of those things.
- 4:13[SPEAKER_00]: And I still think they're going to be able to overcome it because the, the, the, the forty matters defensive rookie group.
- 4:20[SPEAKER_00]: has a lot of pressure on them, but they look like a pretty scrappy group.
- 4:24[SPEAKER_00]: I don't scrap these usually a word you use for untalented on athletic.
- 4:29[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not using that here.
- 4:30[SPEAKER_00]: They just look like a group that's hungry that I had last year had a group that was hungry and a translated.
- 4:35[SPEAKER_00]: They were also good enough.
- 4:37[SPEAKER_00]: This group is talented, right?
- 4:39[SPEAKER_00]: Michael Williams, CJ West, both getting Ray reviews, Alfred Collins is massive, up and stout.
- 4:46[SPEAKER_00]: He's impacting.
- 4:47[SPEAKER_00]: Marcus Seagull, like you can see that maybe there's going to be a place for this guy if you can stay healthy.
- 4:51[SPEAKER_00]: So that's good.
- 4:54[SPEAKER_00]: You really see it when you watch their defense and I watch Monday's practice through binoculars field level, but binoculars because I really just want to focus on guys play to play that honors practice fields have been moved around a little bit so it's a little different than it has been in years past.
- 5:12[SPEAKER_00]: What you really see are, uh, well, you see Bosa Fred Warner made some plays today because he does.
- 5:20[SPEAKER_00]: It was a disruptive day for the liners defense.
- 5:23[SPEAKER_00]: They were better today.
- 5:24[SPEAKER_00]: That happens first day at camp with pads often.
- 5:27[SPEAKER_00]: But Bosa, Fred Warner, the Amateur of the North.
- 5:31[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 5:31[SPEAKER_00]: That is a stud at every level.
- 5:35[SPEAKER_00]: The first two guys with Warner and Bosa, you know, top tier studs feels like La Nore has a chance to really take another step into that group.
- 5:43[SPEAKER_00]: But that's at every level of stud.
- 5:46[SPEAKER_00]: I think
- 5:47[SPEAKER_00]: You start feeling really good about your defense when you add to each of those levels another guy.
- 5:53[SPEAKER_00]: And upfront, Michael Williams, he's not a explosive, swatted left tackle, swatted right tackle out of the way, get to the quarterback in a heartbeat, you know, even his college numbers weren't, but he's flexible.
- 6:09[SPEAKER_00]: and he's strong and he's big and you know the idea that you can move him inside and then Bryce Huff who's really quick off the edge.
- 6:17[SPEAKER_00]: You just see how this defense with Robert Sala.
- 6:20[SPEAKER_00]: who it's hard to put into context or full understanding really what is Robert Sala times two, you know, the second time around is a defensive coordinator.
- 6:29[SPEAKER_00]: What does that mean exactly?
- 6:31[SPEAKER_00]: But I just think the floor is going to be high because of Sala on this defense and they've got a chance to really take a step if Michael Williams can be a, I don't even want to say it, you know, the eleventh overall pick you think like GameRacker Star at PassRussia,
- 6:48[SPEAKER_00]: You know, when you're as big as him, that there's a reason you're not drafted third.
- 6:52[SPEAKER_00]: So I don't want to jump there yet, but if he can just, if he can be a high floor player,
- 7:01[SPEAKER_00]: If you're just telling me that, Mike Williams is a, you know, three down high floor player as a rookie, I think it'd be a really good defense.
- 7:09[SPEAKER_00]: I think that takes the pressure off of both a little bit.
- 7:12[SPEAKER_00]: It takes the pressure off of Warren a little bit, especially when he goes inside, you get Colin, I think West is going to be West is the guy that everyone loves right now.
- 7:22[SPEAKER_00]: But I think the floor is just gonna be really high on this defense.
- 7:25[SPEAKER_00]: And that's gonna be enough even with this receiver issue.
- 7:29[SPEAKER_00]: And it is an issue.
- 7:30[SPEAKER_00]: But Shanahan has shown before.
- 7:32[SPEAKER_00]: He doesn't need, he's had star receivers.
- 7:35[SPEAKER_00]: He doesn't need a bunch of them to have a productive pass game.
- 7:38[SPEAKER_00]: So those are some of the take with some of the takeaways.
- 7:41[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, just looking at, remembering some of my notes, Jordan James, I thought a good first day of pads.
- 7:49[SPEAKER_00]: Really did not are running back to general.
- 7:53[SPEAKER_00]: I hate to use the same high floor, but I think they've got a good group.
- 7:56[SPEAKER_00]: Forty nine is just a terrible number.
- 7:58[SPEAKER_00]: There's no worse number than Forty nine.
- 8:00[SPEAKER_00]: So Cory Kiner, the rookie running back, if he was wearing a different, if he was wearing thirty one, but he's got a little bit of something to him, runs hard.
- 8:10[SPEAKER_00]: But I thought Jordan James is hands.
- 8:11[SPEAKER_00]: Like you gotta be able to, you gotta be able to pass protect, you gotta be able to catch in this offense at running back.
- 8:17[SPEAKER_00]: And he has really good thing.
- 8:19[SPEAKER_00]: I watched the receiver individual drills through the binoculars.
- 8:22[SPEAKER_00]: And you know, you wouldn't go through like all four guys with a little bit of a bubbles, not the right word, but some, you know, when you're not a receiver, when you're a tight end, when you're running back, sometimes the ball sticks and sometimes the ball
- 8:37[SPEAKER_00]: kind of just has to bounce once and settle.
- 8:40[SPEAKER_00]: And with Jordan James, I think every single rap, the ball sticks in his hand.
- 8:45[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, I'm partial.
- 8:47[SPEAKER_00]: That's a guy I really liked.
- 8:49[SPEAKER_00]: I knew that that the nighters liked him going into the draft.
- 8:54[SPEAKER_00]: And it said as much and then they drafted him.
- 8:57[SPEAKER_00]: So that one kind of came together.
- 8:58[SPEAKER_00]: So I guess for that standpoint, maybe I'm rooting for him a little bit.
- 9:02[SPEAKER_00]: But those are some of the highlights by mentioned Brock back.
- 9:06[SPEAKER_00]: And that's good.
- 9:07[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, that's good.
- 9:08[SPEAKER_00]: No disappointing that I see a kicker competition.
- 9:11[SPEAKER_00]: For me, it's not sarcasm.
- 9:12[SPEAKER_00]: It is a real competition.
- 9:15[SPEAKER_00]: I know everybody's very interested in it.
- 9:17[SPEAKER_00]: I'm very interested in it.
- 9:19[SPEAKER_00]: It's such an easy thing to follow a kicker competition.
- 9:23[SPEAKER_00]: Jake Moody is polarizing.
- 9:26[SPEAKER_00]: He has been, you draft a kicker that high.
- 9:28[SPEAKER_00]: It's just going to be polarizing from the start.
- 9:30[SPEAKER_00]: And a kicker competition is great because now they alternate kicks.
- 9:33[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know why you, how did the nighters not do their previous competitions this way, maybe because they were built kind of for Moody to win.
- 9:40[SPEAKER_00]: But you alternate kicks, same distance, same spot on the field, same wind, same up, same everything.
- 9:46[SPEAKER_00]: And everybody's watching everybody's locked in.
- 9:48[SPEAKER_00]: And so I hate to miss it, but they didn't do that today.
- 9:52[SPEAKER_00]: Those guys got to get the day off from that.
- 9:54[SPEAKER_00]: That's a one thing, because you know if you've been watching or listening since the draft, I think it's
- 10:03[SPEAKER_00]: I think you can be a little too optimistic by saying, and if they just do with their draft, what they did last year, they'll be a great shake.
- 10:10[SPEAKER_00]: That's hard to have an immediate impact draft the way they had last year.
- 10:14[SPEAKER_00]: But that is what you need if you're going to kind of flip a window and keep evolving.
- 10:21[SPEAKER_00]: Just as important, though, is that the guys who were good last year's rookies come back really better this year, like Dominic Poody, come back and be better.
- 10:27[SPEAKER_00]: Now that everybody's expecting something, if you, it's too bad, Malah Mustafa got hurt at safety, because same thing for him, Ronaldo Green, come back and be better, too bad, he's hurt.
- 10:36[SPEAKER_00]: But Robert Sala was asked about this, group, you know, I think Tim Kawakami's reminds you, the young guys, twenty-eighteen, and he said, yeah, you know, they make some great plays, and then they make five plays, that reminds you why I'm bald.
- 10:46[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, they do have a ways to go.
- 10:50[SPEAKER_00]: They gotta get in the games, but they've got a volume, this is maybe why you draft a volume on the defensive line in the defensive secondary.
- 10:58[SPEAKER_00]: And yeah, the arrow's pointing up.
- 11:01[SPEAKER_00]: I just think the overarching theme is, if this defense is better,
- 11:08[SPEAKER_00]: then they'll be able to handle what is already a very disheveled, unimpressive, worrisome receiver group.
- 11:19[SPEAKER_00]: That's okay, they can be okay if they handle that stuff.
- 11:23[SPEAKER_00]: So I got home that I didn't do the video from or the show from Levi's, got home about to record it and producer Connor sends me a link to a sub-sac.
- 11:37[SPEAKER_00]: And like, oh, what is this?
- 11:40[SPEAKER_00]: Let's see what he dug up.
- 11:41[SPEAKER_00]: Little research.
- 11:42[SPEAKER_00]: Well, it's his own article.
- 11:47[SPEAKER_00]: Jaco show.
- 11:48[SPEAKER_00]: So I said, Connor, why don't you just come on and break that because this is exactly what I want to talk about today.
- 11:54[SPEAKER_00]: So producer Connor is here.
- 11:56[SPEAKER_00]: Tell people what you said to me when I when you jumped on the stream before we started recording.
- 12:00[SPEAKER_01]: I said the written word is not dead.
- 12:02[SPEAKER_00]: The written word is not dead.
- 12:04[SPEAKER_00]: So here we go.
- 12:05[SPEAKER_00]: Let's let's take a look here, Connor.
- 12:07[SPEAKER_00]: You wrote an article.
- 12:10[SPEAKER_00]: And the thing that really got my attention was, and then we'll go back to kind of what you wrote.
- 12:17[SPEAKER_00]: But to the point on defense, the Niners last year, the graphic you pulled here, were ninth in Dropback EPA per play.
- 12:30[SPEAKER_00]: The Ravens, the Bills, the Lions,
- 12:33[SPEAKER_00]: the common deers, Tampa, Philly, Green Bay, and the bangles.
- 12:39[SPEAKER_00]: Those were the teams that were better in offensive, passing efficiency.
- 12:44[SPEAKER_00]: Which is shocking, when you think about, I mean, it's not shocking, we've kind of talked around it, but given the Yooks injury, Debo's issues, Purcell injured, McAfrey seems to affect everything.
- 12:56[SPEAKER_00]: So that was great.
- 12:58[SPEAKER_00]: Now there are number one by a wide margin in twenty twenty three.
- 13:01[SPEAKER_00]: Big time.
- 13:03[SPEAKER_00]: But I thought that was a great graphic.
- 13:04[SPEAKER_00]: This is a great, this is a great article.
- 13:05[SPEAKER_00]: Thank you.
- 13:18[SPEAKER_00]: Tell me about this.
- 13:19[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 13:19[SPEAKER_01]: So looking at the two seasons and this is a great.
- 13:23[SPEAKER_01]: This is RD RBSDM.com.
- 13:26[SPEAKER_01]: They have these charts every single year and you can filter it all sorts of ways.
- 13:29[SPEAKER_01]: But this is just the big scope.
- 13:31[SPEAKER_01]: This is offense passing offense rushing.
- 13:34[SPEAKER_01]: Twenty twenty three.
- 13:35[SPEAKER_01]: They had McAfrey.
- 13:36[SPEAKER_01]: They had IU.
- 13:36[SPEAKER_01]: They had everyone healthy up into the right doing fantastic.
- 13:40[SPEAKER_01]: They were aggressive.
- 13:42[SPEAKER_01]: It's sort of significantly in twenty twenty four, but they're still doing good.
- 13:45[SPEAKER_01]: And that's to your point.
- 13:47[SPEAKER_01]: The receiver position battle might not be as important as we think.
- 13:50[SPEAKER_01]: I know we need to have bodies out there as nine or five.
- 13:53[SPEAKER_01]: But you have Kittle, you have, you know, you check, you have McAfrey back.
- 13:57[SPEAKER_01]: And so I think the bigger point and the bigger stressor is about the defense.
- 14:02[SPEAKER_01]: The defense align the line backing, you know, who's going to be that second line backer because this offense is efficient.
- 14:08[SPEAKER_01]: Where they really lacked on offense is scoring the ball in the red zone.
- 14:13[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and you made a note, I saw in your article, I love saying that.
- 14:17[SPEAKER_00]: That through week fourteen last year, there were twenty-fifth Maligan Red Zone touchdown percentage, fifty percent.
- 14:22[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 14:23[SPEAKER_00]: The year before there's sixty eight percent first and loop.
- 14:26[SPEAKER_01]: And it felt like that all year, right?
- 14:27[SPEAKER_01]: They're touching the touchdowns.
- 14:29[SPEAKER_01]: Then the defense can pin their ears back.
- 14:31[SPEAKER_01]: Go after, you know, make plays on defense.
- 14:33[SPEAKER_01]: So the compliment when each other obviously very well.
- 14:36[SPEAKER_01]: That was very stark.
- 14:37[SPEAKER_01]: The red zone is very, very important for this this team to succeed in twenty twenty five.
- 14:43[SPEAKER_00]: Ways to go, I do have to tell you, because I mentioned it the other day on Friday.
- 14:46[SPEAKER_00]: I wasn't gonna weigh in.
- 14:48[SPEAKER_00]: I wasn't even thinking about it.
- 14:50[SPEAKER_00]: It's Christian McCaffrey fast.
- 14:51[SPEAKER_00]: It's Christian McCaffrey.
- 14:52[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 14:53[SPEAKER_00]: But he does look good.
- 14:55[SPEAKER_00]: He does look good.
- 14:56[SPEAKER_00]: And they're keeping him fresh.
- 14:57[SPEAKER_00]: By the way.
- 14:58[SPEAKER_00]: Isn't it like, they practically, they give them days off and put, they take reps off, they give them days off and practice.
- 15:03[SPEAKER_00]: So they understand workload there, but then when the game starts, no workload.
- 15:06[SPEAKER_00]: I know.
- 15:08[SPEAKER_00]: I know.
- 15:08[SPEAKER_01]: Well, they barely even practice, like, NFL, NFL rules nowadays, but do you think it's going to be the same sort of usage?
- 15:16[SPEAKER_00]: That's twenty three.
- 15:17[SPEAKER_00]: I don't, these answers.
- 15:18[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 15:19[SPEAKER_00]: I guess until we see otherwise, we got to assume so, but
- 15:23[SPEAKER_00]: wouldn't shock me, it just, you know, it really depends on how much does Kyle Shanahan trust the other backs like Isaac Garendo to protect and to protect the quarterback in the ball.
- 15:34[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, protect the quarterback in the ball.
- 15:36[SPEAKER_00]: True.
- 15:36[SPEAKER_00]: I guess Bobby turned a solid Bobby Turner, like Bobby Turner, you know, famously is very hard on these guys, but protect the quarterback, protect the ball.
- 15:46[SPEAKER_01]: which position battles you've paying the most attention to besides kicker besides kicker what are you what are you what do you I like that you're asking me questions was there anything from your article that you wanted to um anything else you don't dig in you wrote it go down to the defense of portions so offense they're still efficient they just couldn't score the ball defense they progressed a lot they're getting ran through
- 16:06[SPEAKER_01]: So, twenty twenty three good defense, twenty two is even better.
- 16:10[SPEAKER_01]: But twenty three you want negative EPA per play.
- 16:13[SPEAKER_01]: They jumped significantly eight to twenty three.
- 16:16[SPEAKER_01]: And then you look at the red.
- 16:17[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 16:17[SPEAKER_00]: Those people listening to this.
- 16:18[SPEAKER_00]: They were ranked eighth in EPA defensive efficiency.
- 16:23[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 16:23[SPEAKER_00]: In twenty three and then they were twenty fourth.
- 16:27[SPEAKER_00]: Twenty third in twenty four.
- 16:29[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 16:29[SPEAKER_01]: And then look at the red zone.
- 16:31[SPEAKER_01]: That's the key key point.
- 16:34[SPEAKER_01]: So in twenty twenty three they were eleven which is solid top third and red zone touchdown percentage by the European and then a twenty twenty four thirty first sixty eight percent of the time teams got to the red zone they scored on the forty nine
- 16:48[SPEAKER_01]: score touchdown touchdowns which part of it at the end of the year like the Cardinals game and the Lions game it was just they were tanking or they weren't really trying still you saw it all season long this team could not stop really anyone especially running the ball to go down a little bit further so we'll look at the two years twenty twenty four they were thirty-a-th and rushing touchdowns allowed they allowed twenty four touchdowns
- 17:12[SPEAKER_01]: And they had eight teeth in rushing yards.
- 17:15[SPEAKER_01]: Compare that to twenty twenty three.
- 17:16[SPEAKER_01]: They're top five in both categories.
- 17:18[SPEAKER_01]: Touchdowns allowed rushing and yards allowed rushing.
- 17:22[SPEAKER_01]: So what do they do?
- 17:24[SPEAKER_01]: They dressed it by picks.
- 17:26[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, they got bodies.
- 17:28[SPEAKER_00]: So you by just be, I mean, average for shanahan is top third of the league.
- 17:34[SPEAKER_00]: That's what an average last year of not, you know, was a good offense in some ways, but it's hard to argue good offense when you look at efficiencies when you can't score touchdowns of the red zone.
- 17:44[SPEAKER_00]: So that's where I know there's a lot of fighting amongst people.
- 17:47[SPEAKER_00]: So they were good, look at the stats, like yeah, but I watched the games, they didn't score touchdowns.
- 17:50[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's infuriated.
- 17:51[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 17:52[SPEAKER_00]: But like just a little better there and
- 17:57[SPEAKER_00]: I just think you probably heard some of what I said before you came on.
- 18:00[SPEAKER_00]: I just think they're the floor in their defense is going to be much higher.
- 18:04[SPEAKER_00]: Which is great.
- 18:05[SPEAKER_00]: With Sala back to on top of that.
- 18:06[SPEAKER_00]: Because partly and because I mean large part because Sala's back.
- 18:11[SPEAKER_01]: Something would be interesting to think about when Sala took over
- 18:15[SPEAKER_01]: There's a DJ Jones was a young defensive line, and I know he had been in the league a little bit, but it was like, how I think it took a few years for him to develop.
- 18:21[SPEAKER_01]: So I wonder how long these guys will take to develop under Sala, under Casseric.
- 18:29[SPEAKER_01]: I wonder if it's going to take a while if that is a position you can sort of plug in.
- 18:32[SPEAKER_01]: What do you think?
- 18:35[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I mean, you draft the guy at Levin's, like you want him to immediately impact.
- 18:40[SPEAKER_00]: You draft the guy in the second round.
- 18:41[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I don't think there's any reason why a defensive lineman can't immediately impact the game.
- 18:45[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 18:46[SPEAKER_00]: Especially when we're talking about run defense.
- 18:48[SPEAKER_00]: Like, did you draft strong guys who can anchor?
- 18:52[SPEAKER_00]: You know?
- 18:52[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 18:53[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it became a problem with Jave on a hard grip.
- 18:55[SPEAKER_00]: Wasn't getting sacks and can't stop the run.
- 18:58[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that was, yeah, and a lot of money.
- 19:01[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, I think my cow bumps inside a lot.
- 19:04[SPEAKER_00]: You got both a half, half looks.
- 19:07[SPEAKER_00]: like a rocket coming off the edge.
- 19:09[SPEAKER_00]: That's great.
- 19:10[SPEAKER_00]: So, yeah, it's, okay, where are you gonna, you got some, you got some camp, camp questions?
- 19:17[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, something that's been talked about a lot and I think on KMBR on Friday, Brock pretty was on and was like, yeah, we're refreshed.
- 19:27[SPEAKER_01]: You know, we haven't played since January, we've had a long off season.
- 19:30[SPEAKER_01]: Can you tell, do they look rejuvenated, do they look revitalized?
- 19:33[SPEAKER_01]: Cause that's been the talk this off season.
- 19:35[SPEAKER_01]: Can you tell by practice here every year?
- 19:38[SPEAKER_01]: It's a good question.
- 19:39[SPEAKER_00]: No, it's just a kind of home.
- 19:42[SPEAKER_00]: I think so.
- 19:43[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I think it would be lying if I said like, yeah, it's a great question.
- 19:50[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think so.
- 19:51[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it seems like Shannon had a said like you can tell on the building when guys come back after such a short rest versus a longer rest, but
- 20:01[SPEAKER_00]: No, I'd be lying if I told you I could tell it.
- 20:03[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, camp, by the way, guys move.
- 20:05[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, they're all there.
- 20:07[SPEAKER_00]: Like they all showed, well, not all there, but like, you know, TAs, like they showed up.
- 20:12[SPEAKER_00]: At least a little bit, you know what I mean, that was like a something Cal dictated them like, what kind of team you're going to be.
- 20:18[SPEAKER_00]: You guys have to show up for this or what?
- 20:19[SPEAKER_00]: So it didn't mean like they were all participating or Trent or whatever, but.
- 20:24[SPEAKER_00]: I'll tell you, I would get as many reps for Michael Williams against Trent Williams as possible.
- 20:29[SPEAKER_00]: True.
- 20:29[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 20:30[SPEAKER_00]: One thing I said on Friday is just so we're not agreeing that it really, it's the shame you got hurt.
- 20:34[SPEAKER_00]: He got a really good practice on Friday and two of those reps.
- 20:38[SPEAKER_00]: He had three PBUs, two of them, one on one with John Jennings.
- 20:41[SPEAKER_00]: John so much bigger.
- 20:43[SPEAKER_00]: But Ronaldo, like, plays the ball well in the air, and the natters are continuing their tradition of not throwing good deep balls.
- 20:49[SPEAKER_00]: It's all one was under throwing or made a play.
- 20:52[SPEAKER_00]: Um, but no guy, you don't understand those crossers count as deep balls.
- 20:58[SPEAKER_00]: But, uh, don't you look at the stats?
- 21:02[SPEAKER_00]: Um,
- 21:04[SPEAKER_00]: But like, you know, if you're damn at an early nor like, you, you gotta go get to Marcus Robinson or Ricky Pierce all.
- 21:10[SPEAKER_00]: They're just not that many reps against real starting receivers.
- 21:15[SPEAKER_00]: So when you got one on defense,
- 21:17[SPEAKER_00]: You know, take advantage.
- 21:18[SPEAKER_00]: That's the beauty.
- 21:19[SPEAKER_00]: Like he'll go in and take on Pune or he'll take on McKibitz.
- 21:22[SPEAKER_00]: They'll move them on the other side.
- 21:23[SPEAKER_00]: Like they're moving them back and forth.
- 21:24[SPEAKER_00]: He had a handful of reps against Trump Williams and the team peer today.
- 21:28[SPEAKER_00]: But you got to get both, you know, both in Trent got to get some reps against each other too.
- 21:32[SPEAKER_00]: That anyway.
- 21:34[SPEAKER_00]: Those are like I would say you start to ask a question before we went back to the article about competitions.
- 21:39[SPEAKER_00]: I would say positional competitions aside because like the lineback thing I want to see in play.
- 21:45[SPEAKER_00]: where my binoculars go is like, I find my kill and then I watch for him.
- 21:50[SPEAKER_00]: I watch him.
- 21:50[SPEAKER_00]: Cause right now I'm not watching, like I watch Ricky.
- 21:54[SPEAKER_00]: You know, but Russell Gage has made some great plays like Isaiah Hodges like these like that's fine.
- 22:00[SPEAKER_00]: I don't want to write anybody off that these guys are competing for for jobs like it's real.
- 22:03[SPEAKER_00]: So I don't want to be dismissive, but you know, my eyes go to my call a lot.
- 22:08[SPEAKER_00]: Just kind of watch him whatever his matchup is.
- 22:11[SPEAKER_01]: What have you seen with D Winters first Martin in the week's online background?
- 22:14[SPEAKER_01]: Both fast.
- 22:16[SPEAKER_00]: Like I think Martin looks good, but there's so much is just about processing.
- 22:22[SPEAKER_00]: at that position, understanding what's happening.
- 22:25[SPEAKER_00]: And it is felt like D. Winters has all the tools and he gets some games.
- 22:29[SPEAKER_00]: It doesn't, like, he's seeing it.
- 22:31[SPEAKER_00]: So I don't know.
- 22:32[SPEAKER_00]: That's, that's at the top of the list for like, when there's a real game, how does Nick Martin look?
- 22:36[SPEAKER_00]: But I expect them, but like, I think we're to see them both play a lot.
- 22:39[SPEAKER_00]: Like, if you had to handicap, you'd probably say D. Martin
- 22:43[SPEAKER_00]: DeWinter, sorry.
- 22:45[SPEAKER_00]: DeMartin, who's DeMartin?
- 22:46[SPEAKER_00]: Who's the job?
- 22:48[SPEAKER_00]: DeMartin.
- 22:49[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 22:50[SPEAKER_00]: Wrap pack.
- 22:50[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, let me be a joke documentary.
- 22:53[SPEAKER_01]: Highly recommend, by the way.
- 22:55[SPEAKER_01]: The scene of a concert multiple times.
- 22:56[SPEAKER_01]: Have you really?
- 22:57[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 22:58[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 22:58[SPEAKER_01]: It was a kid.
- 23:00[SPEAKER_01]: He's great, phenomenal.
- 23:01[SPEAKER_01]: Do you want to be a mayor?
- 23:02[SPEAKER_01]: I'll be taking you to, yeah.
- 23:04[SPEAKER_01]: We're.
- 23:05[SPEAKER_01]: Arco, Anaheim, and, oh my god, Arco again.
- 23:10[SPEAKER_01]: You guys, the Collins family is into it.
- 23:12[SPEAKER_01]: Big time.
- 23:13[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 23:14[SPEAKER_01]: We listen to that.
- 23:15[SPEAKER_01]: We, I think we skip Disneyland.
- 23:16[SPEAKER_01]: They're like, we're going to see this.
- 23:17[SPEAKER_01]: I better for now.
- 23:20[SPEAKER_01]: Well, the documentary is excellent.
- 23:22[SPEAKER_01]: I'm excited to watch it.
- 23:22[SPEAKER_01]: It's on max, like two parts, but it's like two and a half hours each part.
- 23:26[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, wait, two.
- 23:28[SPEAKER_01]: It's the Broncos and the Raiders joint practice, right?
- 23:30[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 23:33[SPEAKER_00]: raiders is the second one.
- 23:34[SPEAKER_00]: So that's probably where you see peri and like more of the starters.
- 23:37[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 23:37[SPEAKER_01]: And so I mean, Portland Sutton just signed a deal.
- 23:39[SPEAKER_01]: So maybe we can see it.
- 23:40[SPEAKER_01]: Hopefully you run out of those back by.
- 23:41[SPEAKER_00]: I sounds like it won't be.
- 23:44[SPEAKER_00]: That's the first one.
- 23:45[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 23:45[SPEAKER_00]: That's the first joint practice.
- 23:46[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 23:47[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think it's, but somebody clicked me from wrong.
- 23:50[SPEAKER_00]: I thought some of the word on that one was not till the raiders.
- 23:53[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 23:54[SPEAKER_01]: Raiders don't really have much receivers to to challenge.
- 23:57[SPEAKER_01]: It broke hours for for D Winters or Nick Martin.
- 24:00[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 24:00[SPEAKER_01]: Thanks.
- 24:03[SPEAKER_00]: Good though, like it's what you need.
- 24:04[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, just out of a fight with who's going to fight.
- 24:09[SPEAKER_00]: Usually I use the guy that's ready to scrap Mac, you know, Max Crosby said something about fighting.
- 24:15[SPEAKER_00]: You saw that.
- 24:16[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 24:18[SPEAKER_01]: And it's a see Carol.
- 24:20[SPEAKER_01]: There it is.
- 24:21[SPEAKER_01]: Do you know familiar faces over there.
- 24:24[SPEAKER_01]: Christian Wilkins.
- 24:26[SPEAKER_01]: What's all right?
- 24:27[SPEAKER_00]: What?
- 24:27[SPEAKER_00]: What?
- 24:34[SPEAKER_01]: I special team, so you think if you had a prediction right, Joseph wins.
- 24:39[SPEAKER_00]: I think Greg Joseph, they've replaced the snapper, they've replaced the punter, they've replaced something else, they've replaced the bills.
- 24:46[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, I guess they brought in returners, drafted returner.
- 24:52[SPEAKER_00]: Greg Joseph, that has to be my prediction right now.
- 24:55[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 24:57[SPEAKER_01]: I think I don't know what's the crazy burning questions for you.
- 25:01[SPEAKER_01]: Brock looks fine.
- 25:02[SPEAKER_01]: He could be two.
- 25:03[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, Brock congratulations.
- 25:05[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 25:06[SPEAKER_00]: And Christian McAfrican graduations.
- 25:09[SPEAKER_01]: Is he off seasons for the fellas?
- 25:11[SPEAKER_01]: QB two, Mac Jones.
- 25:12[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, if we go backwards, what is this month?
- 25:15[SPEAKER_00]: What's July?
- 25:16[SPEAKER_00]: The seventh month?
- 25:17[SPEAKER_00]: The sixth month?
- 25:18[SPEAKER_00]: Seven.
- 25:19[SPEAKER_00]: Seven.
- 25:20[SPEAKER_00]: How will nine?
- 25:21[SPEAKER_00]: We're like, yeah.
- 25:25[SPEAKER_00]: Was that a lie that I was having a buy week last year?
- 25:27[SPEAKER_00]: Well, it was going on Halloween.
- 25:31[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, you know, you, they've got this thing, you know, you win.
- 25:34[SPEAKER_00]: And these appointments, they got it down to the day.
- 25:37[SPEAKER_00]: One if they want that.
- 25:38[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, that's a great question.
- 25:40[SPEAKER_00]: Let's see, hold on.
- 25:42[SPEAKER_00]: Forty nine or scared.
- 25:43[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, like, when was McAfrey's babies like what two weeks old or less?
- 25:48[SPEAKER_00]: More?
- 25:48[SPEAKER_00]: I don't.
- 25:49[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, somewhere in there.
- 25:50[SPEAKER_00]: It's over that range.
- 25:54[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, Chris.
- 25:56[SPEAKER_00]: The buy was, they've played October, twenty seven, week nine was a buy.
- 26:02[SPEAKER_01]: The burning off season questions.
- 26:04[SPEAKER_01]: Get to the bottom of this.
- 26:08[SPEAKER_01]: Well, that's smart.
- 26:08[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, then you don't have to miss any games or anything like that.
- 26:11[SPEAKER_01]: That's planned.
- 26:12[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's the idea.
- 26:13[SPEAKER_00]: Miss a training camp practice.
- 26:15[SPEAKER_00]: I've been listening.
- 26:16[SPEAKER_00]: I know I'm I've been listening for a while.
- 26:18[SPEAKER_00]: I've you've done the Mike Silver book.
- 26:20[SPEAKER_00]: No, the why is everything very good.
- 26:23[SPEAKER_00]: And it's came out a while ago and I started listening to it.
- 26:25[SPEAKER_00]: I bought it the second it came out and then you know you get off track and you leave it and you come back to it.
- 26:31[SPEAKER_00]: So this I'm not breaking news like people have heard this, but if you haven't he goes into it like I
- 26:38[SPEAKER_00]: I had heard it and you'd known it.
- 26:39[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't fully understand how and he just details.
- 26:43[SPEAKER_00]: I'd always heard it, but like how annoyed then I was worried that as soon as they paid Jimmy Garoppolo, they couldn't get him to text the coaches back.
- 26:49[SPEAKER_00]: So that all part of the book is so good.
- 26:52[SPEAKER_00]: You know, Brock is so different.
- 26:53[SPEAKER_01]: Like Brock is very different.
- 26:56[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, he feels, I mean, just a natural leader.
- 26:59[SPEAKER_01]: He feels, he likes, they ever likes him and
- 27:02[SPEAKER_01]: Feel good about paying that quarterback, right?
- 27:04[SPEAKER_01]: You do do.
- 27:05[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 27:05[SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely.
- 27:07[SPEAKER_00]: Let's see.
- 27:08[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 27:09[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think they had my.
- 27:10[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
- 27:10[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 27:10[SPEAKER_01]: If you're in a grapple with who might be playing some for the Rams.
- 27:13[SPEAKER_01]: Staff is hanging up back again.
- 27:16[SPEAKER_01]: Someone tells me staff will be fine.
- 27:17[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 27:18[SPEAKER_01]: Or he just doesn't want to practice.
- 27:19[SPEAKER_01]: It doesn't need to practice.
- 27:20[SPEAKER_00]: This guy, I just got to keep him healthy.
- 27:24[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, I had two quick ones before we, John Gruden wants back in.
- 27:29[SPEAKER_00]: Just see these quotes.
- 27:30[SPEAKER_00]: Hopefully I'm not done.
- 27:32[SPEAKER_00]: I'm about to make it come back.
- 27:33[SPEAKER_00]: I don't care if I coach it.
- 27:35[SPEAKER_00]: Jones is junior high.
- 27:36[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to coach again.
- 27:37[SPEAKER_00]: So, most likely destination, USC.
- 27:40[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 27:41[SPEAKER_00]: Not Lincoln's Lincoln's going to have a bounce a big year.
- 27:44[SPEAKER_00]: Where's he going to go?
- 27:45[SPEAKER_00]: Is anyone going to, I'm saying no, I don't think John Groot and getting hired as he starts.
- 27:49[SPEAKER_01]: I like a max school and then do the whole thing again.
- 27:52[SPEAKER_01]: He's going to like, you know, Kent State or Toledo or something and then jump to Oklahoma and then he's on back at the fucking years.
- 28:01[SPEAKER_00]: Why not?
- 28:01[SPEAKER_00]: Here's the thing I don't like these guys are so addicted to being head coaches.
- 28:05[SPEAKER_00]: Why not just go call plays for somebody?
- 28:08[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 28:09[SPEAKER_00]: Chuck Kelly seemed to like that niche much better.
- 28:11[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I did.
- 28:12[SPEAKER_00]: I do think the, I noticed today, you just see pre-practice.
- 28:19[SPEAKER_00]: It's Shanahan, a John Lynch stand in the middle of the field.
- 28:23[SPEAKER_00]: and Gus Bradley and Robert Sala and jet, you know, Jed Fish, the coach at Washington hired a guy named Ryan Walters as his de-up talking college football now, as his defensive coordinator, maybe you'll write about this on jocosho.com, Seattle, Seattle football news.
- 28:40[SPEAKER_00]: Ryan Walters was the head coach at Purdue, didn't go well, but really sharp guy.
- 28:46[SPEAKER_00]: And what Jed Fish said, people somebody asked him about, he said, you know,
- 28:51[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I actually, he mentioned it to us to when we did their spring game.
- 28:56[SPEAKER_00]: And on Big Ten Network, he said, he said he did a study of like college triple playoff teams and a lot of them in the last few years, you look at the final four teams like that.
- 29:03[SPEAKER_00]: They all are like, you know, seven of the eight or something that had former head coaches on their staff.
- 29:11[SPEAKER_00]: You know, it's hard to identify exactly what that does for you or how it helps you.
- 29:16[SPEAKER_00]: I wonder if maybe there's just a couple times a year where something needs to be said to the head coach and it needs to come from somebody that he's willing to listen to.
- 29:26[SPEAKER_00]: And I don't know how it plays itself out, but, you know, I do wonder if this is the year of
- 29:33[SPEAKER_00]: Brand Boyer's getting, you know, the special teams coach for the first time, probably has a lot like, Kyle's got to listen.
- 29:40[SPEAKER_00]: This has been too much.
- 29:41[SPEAKER_00]: I've never seen a team being like a five or six year drought on special teams.
- 29:45[SPEAKER_00]: Just correct it immediately.
- 29:46[SPEAKER_00]: Well, then I just haven't corrected special teams lately.
- 29:49[SPEAKER_00]: Like if you had a leak in the roof, you're like, hey, Connor, how's the leak in the roof from last rainy season?
- 29:53[SPEAKER_00]: You know, like, oh, not a little leaking out of bucket there and got a bucket.
- 29:58[SPEAKER_00]: I've got a third round bucket.
- 30:00[SPEAKER_00]: So, I don't know.
- 30:03[SPEAKER_00]: I don't want to jump too far to some conclusion or make some grand statement about what it means, but I do think it's interesting that he has two head coaches, Gus Bradley and Robert Sala around.
- 30:15[SPEAKER_00]: So the other thing I noticed, the other piece of news, you see a trail in Berks from the Titans got waved.
- 30:20[SPEAKER_00]: Yep.
- 30:21[SPEAKER_00]: I do.
- 30:22[SPEAKER_00]: I remember when he was the, like, you know, if you just, you could trade Debo now and take Traylon Berks.
- 30:27[SPEAKER_00]: Twenty, twenty two draft.
- 30:28[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, trade Debo for Berks.
- 30:30[SPEAKER_01]: Well, the time.
- 30:30[SPEAKER_00]: And then immediately had asthma.
- 30:32[SPEAKER_00]: It was like, oh, you can't get through practice.
- 30:34[SPEAKER_00]: That's a bad sign.
- 30:35[SPEAKER_01]: But I had tried to do that.
- 30:36[SPEAKER_01]: And I think, thankfully, the Niners did not because that was, that was a tough one.
- 30:42[SPEAKER_01]: AJ Brown for Traylon Berks.
- 30:45[SPEAKER_01]: That's right.
- 30:45[SPEAKER_01]: You pay the money there.
- 30:47[SPEAKER_00]: Don't, that with the, don't do a trade with the Eagles.
- 30:50[SPEAKER_01]: No.
- 30:51[SPEAKER_01]: Don't answer the phone.
- 30:53[SPEAKER_01]: Wait, can John get back into the NFL?
- 30:55[SPEAKER_01]: Is he like, blacklisted?
- 30:59[SPEAKER_00]: No.
- 30:59[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I guess if you're blacklisted, it's never like, there's never like an actual list publicly available.
- 31:06[SPEAKER_00]: So I guess he could be, I guess is the sure answer on that.
- 31:11[SPEAKER_00]: But I think his lawsuit concludes at some point and then he kind of lost who begins to,
- 31:17[SPEAKER_00]: So maybe that concludes and then the door is open back up for him to return.
- 31:22[SPEAKER_00]: But that's why I brought up college.
- 31:23[SPEAKER_00]: I just think if you're a college, if you're an NFL coach with any chance of becoming a head coach, you'd probably don't go to college.
- 31:32[SPEAKER_00]: So who take some of these college shops?
- 31:34[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe it's guys who were NFL head coaches want to be a coach again.
- 31:38[SPEAKER_00]: And you go through a couple of cycles.
- 31:43[SPEAKER_00]: There's Doug Peters and Doug Peters and get an NFL head coach in the next cycle.
- 31:47[SPEAKER_00]: If not, what does he do?
- 31:48[SPEAKER_00]: That type of situation.
- 31:55[SPEAKER_01]: One final, we're talking head coaches, maybe hot seat, Mike McDaniel at the Dolphins.
- 32:00[SPEAKER_01]: What if they have a bad season?
- 32:01[SPEAKER_01]: Where does he end up?
- 32:02[SPEAKER_01]: Is he easy back with the four dinioners?
- 32:04[SPEAKER_00]: That one's fascinating, like do those guys come home?
- 32:07[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's, do you come home?
- 32:09[SPEAKER_00]: Bobby slow it got fired and Houston, he went to Miami.
- 32:11[SPEAKER_00]: He didn't come to San Francisco.
- 32:12[SPEAKER_00]: Which makes sense, I guess.
- 32:14[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 32:16[SPEAKER_00]: But I do wonder that.
- 32:17[SPEAKER_00]: Now, solid came home, right?
- 32:19[SPEAKER_00]: But solid is in charge of the defense.
- 32:21[SPEAKER_00]: You know, if you're Mike McDaniel,
- 32:24[SPEAKER_00]: You probably go a place where you're the offensive coordinator, right?
- 32:29[SPEAKER_00]: You like, a solid gets a job and then you go with Sala.
- 32:33[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, right.
- 32:34[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
