- 0:00Speaker 1: It's the Marks Alone Show on seventy r Well, Michael Goodwin,
- 0:06Speaker 1: the greatest, the finest columnist in America. You can read
- 0:09Speaker 1: this column every Sunday and every Wednesday in the New
- 0:12Speaker 1: York Post and they're all up on the New York
- 0:14Speaker 1: Post website and go read them all there. Michael Goodwin,
- 0:17Speaker 1: how you doing.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Good morning, Mark? Thank you?
- 0:20Speaker 1: Hey, uh, I'm talking a while the King's visit. You know,
- 0:26Speaker 1: everybody just applauding, bowing, standing ovations. Can the can these
- 0:31Speaker 1: people ever do a no King's protest ever again? After
- 0:35Speaker 1: they fond all over the actual king?
- 0:38Speaker 2: Yeah, that is funny that, you know. It's all about theories,
- 0:42Speaker 2: It's all about name calling and what can you what
- 0:46Speaker 2: can you create by way of an argument? So when
- 0:50Speaker 2: I actually say, when the real king comes, not a problem.
- 0:55Speaker 1: So but what about the you wrote about our relationship
- 0:58Speaker 1: with the British? It has changed, hasn't it?
- 1:00Speaker 2: It has? And I think that Starmer the Prime Minister,
- 1:05Speaker 2: is a major problem. But I think we're seeing it
- 1:09Speaker 2: all throughout Western Europe, Germany and France included. But the
- 1:14Speaker 2: special relationship is a phrase that Winston Churchill coined to
- 1:22Speaker 2: capture the long, long history of these two nations together,
- 1:27Speaker 2: and of course World War two cemented that idea for
- 1:31Speaker 2: a lot of people. And yet when the new British
- 1:36Speaker 2: ambassador says he doesn't think that the special relationship is
- 1:42Speaker 2: the same as it was, and he says, if America
- 1:46Speaker 2: has a special relationship with any country, it's probably Israel,
- 1:53Speaker 2: and that to me, Mark was such an astounding statement.
- 1:57Speaker 2: I happen to agree with it. I think Israel has
- 2:01Speaker 2: emerged as America's the most important ally, certainly in the
- 2:06Speaker 2: Mid East. But when you look at the war as
- 2:09Speaker 2: a whole, so much of the trouble coming from the
- 2:12Speaker 2: Mid East, it's the right place to have the right ally.
- 2:17Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, a simple what's going on around, it'd
- 2:21Speaker 1: be a simple thing for the British or any other
- 2:24Speaker 1: country who's really more dependent on that oil than any
- 2:27Speaker 1: of us, to just send something, just back us up
- 2:30Speaker 1: with something a ship or to something.
- 2:34Speaker 2: As you see that they depend on that alone, it
- 2:37Speaker 2: affects their economies. But we have seen the same thing.
- 2:42Speaker 2: Remember when the Germans and others are buying natural gas
- 2:47Speaker 2: from Russia even as they were helping tofund Ukraine's defense
- 2:55Speaker 2: against Russia. So they were giving money to both sides.
- 3:00Speaker 2: The kind of thing that Europe is specializing in these states,
- 3:04Speaker 2: it's a weak about its own defense, it's a weak
- 3:07Speaker 2: about its own culture, it's a weak about freedom of
- 3:11Speaker 2: speech that JD. Vance pointed out. So I think the
- 3:16Speaker 2: decline in the relationship with America is really symbolic of
- 3:21Speaker 2: an overall decline in the values of Western European nations.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Yeah, and all these leaders around the world, and all
- 3:32Speaker 1: the leaders here in America and all of our presence
- 3:35Speaker 1: for years have dreamed of getting rid of this evil
- 3:38Speaker 1: terrorist regime in Iran. We've just it's been a dream.
- 3:42Speaker 1: Why are they getting so panicky when we're pretty close
- 3:44Speaker 1: to actually getting it done.
- 3:47Speaker 2: Yeah, because you're right, it has acquired so much of
- 3:52Speaker 2: the sort of Western brain power and military costs and
- 3:57Speaker 2: everything to keep the ira in regime that day. But
- 4:03Speaker 2: you know, when you think back to its impact in
- 4:07Speaker 2: Syria and Lebanon, of course, Hamas Cutter, I mean, all
- 4:13Speaker 2: these the hoodies in Yemen, all of these troubles Iraq.
- 4:18Speaker 2: Look how many Americans died in Iraq because of the
- 4:22Speaker 2: Iranian influence. The cousin Salomoni, whom President Trump droned in
- 4:30Speaker 2: the first term, It was the first time any Western
- 4:34Speaker 2: country had said to Iran, no, you are the source
- 4:39Speaker 2: of the problem. We are stopping it now, And yet
- 4:43Speaker 2: still Europe will not say that.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Yeah, hey, Michael Goodwin, let me just switch subjects here.
- 4:50Speaker 1: We're about three four months into mom Danni. He's quite
- 4:54Speaker 1: annoying the things he's talking about, but doesn't seem to
- 4:58Speaker 1: actually do anything. If it continues along where it's just
- 5:02Speaker 1: talking Instagram videos and he doesn't actually it's done, will
- 5:05Speaker 1: we survive him?
- 5:07Speaker 2: You know, Mike, I had a similar thought, and it
- 5:12Speaker 2: may be a good sign that he seems somewhat hesitant
- 5:17Speaker 2: to go beyond the rhetorical, symbolic statements and appointments. This
- 5:26Speaker 2: budget thing, I think is a real issue for him
- 5:30Speaker 2: and for the state that neither the city nor the
- 5:34Speaker 2: state can pass a budget right now, because it's all
- 5:38Speaker 2: about trying to satisfy Mondani's need for billions and billions
- 5:44Speaker 2: and billions of dollars for these free things that he
- 5:48Speaker 2: wants to give away. And so I think he's run
- 5:51Speaker 2: up against some reality in that sense. We haven't seen
- 5:56Speaker 2: a real change in him, but I do believe there
- 6:01Speaker 2: is a sense that you know, he's met the real
- 6:03Speaker 2: world with his budget issue, and it's not looking like
- 6:08Speaker 2: an easy thing to solve.
- 6:10Speaker 1: Yeah, but he's not a guy who's ever run anything.
- 6:13Speaker 1: He's never had a job, he's never been in act,
- 6:15Speaker 1: never been in a manager. He's like a crazy, stary
- 6:18Speaker 1: eyed college kid. And when you say they've met reality,
- 6:21Speaker 1: I don't think they really care, do they? They just
- 6:24Speaker 1: go on dreams.
- 6:24Speaker 2: Well, I think they're going to have to in the
- 6:28Speaker 2: sense that if they can't get the money. If you
- 6:32Speaker 2: have a big uproar on Wall Street over the credit ratings,
- 6:37Speaker 2: I mean, I think a couple of things Mark that
- 6:41Speaker 2: you and I have both lived through in our time,
- 6:45Speaker 2: essentially from the seventies in the eighties. It was first
- 6:50Speaker 2: a budget crisis and then the crime crisis, and those
- 6:55Speaker 2: two things I think are triple rs for every mayor
- 6:59Speaker 2: now every governor too. You cannot risk the city standing
- 7:05Speaker 2: with the credit rating agencies and therefore what it pays
- 7:09Speaker 2: in interest when it borrows money from the public, and
- 7:13Speaker 2: the crime it's impact on people leaving on just the
- 7:19Speaker 2: headlines really damage a mayor. So I think those are
- 7:24Speaker 2: two main things that every mayor has to confront and
- 7:28Speaker 2: so far, I would say Mamdani has done a lousy
- 7:32Speaker 2: job on both, but at the same time, he hasn't
- 7:36Speaker 2: denied that these are important, So that, to me is
- 7:40Speaker 2: the one hopeful son. He's not trying to create a
- 7:45Speaker 2: tirely new landscape for how you judge a mayor. He
- 7:49Speaker 2: knows he can't escape the crime issue and he can't
- 7:53Speaker 2: escape the budget issue.
- 7:55Speaker 1: Yeah. Now what about Kathy Hopeless. He's a doubling down
- 7:58Speaker 1: on this anti ice stuff sanctuary city. He wants to
- 8:01Speaker 1: make that go even further. Why does she do that?
- 8:05Speaker 1: Is that just to get elected again?
- 8:08Speaker 2: Look, I think she won't say anything that will cost
- 8:13Speaker 2: the votes among Mamdani voters. I think that's her only goal.
- 8:21Speaker 2: That's why she endorsed him. That's why she's done all
- 8:24Speaker 2: these things for the city. She got his endorsement in return.
- 8:28Speaker 2: But now what she will need in the fall is
- 8:32Speaker 2: to get his voters to come out for her in November.
- 8:36Speaker 2: And if they all do, let's say a million of
- 8:41Speaker 2: them roughly, then she will be in a good position
- 8:45Speaker 2: to win reelection. So answer to your question is, yes,
- 8:49Speaker 2: that's all she cares about.
- 8:52Speaker 1: Huh. Can you imagine you spend your whole life in
- 8:54Speaker 1: politics finally, and then you end up having a cater
- 8:58Speaker 1: to the Mamdami.
- 8:58Speaker 2: Crowd exactly like a bunch of twenty year old who
- 9:04Speaker 2: don't really know anything about anything except you know, they
- 9:08Speaker 2: love communism and socialism. They apparently never read a book
- 9:12Speaker 2: about either.
- 9:13Speaker 1: Yeah. Well, Michael Goodwin, great stuff. Everybody read his columns
- 9:17Speaker 1: every Sunday. New columns coming out tomorrow. Can you give
- 9:19Speaker 1: us a hint? Do we know what it's about yet?
- 9:24Speaker 2: No? I can't.
- 9:24Speaker 1: Oh, okay, it's.
- 9:26Speaker 2: Still in a formulation. I don't want to make you amendment.
- 9:30Speaker 2: And now your listeners marks a good one. He didn't
- 9:33Speaker 2: do what he said he was going to do, so
- 9:35Speaker 2: I have to I have to leave my save a
- 9:37Speaker 2: little wiggle room here.
- 9:38Speaker 1: All right. Well, when you get up in the morning,
