- 1:01Speaker 1: Hey, Viking fans, welcome into another episode of the Tailgate
- 1:05Speaker 1: presented by Continental Diamond. Your Minnesota Vikings are zero to
- 1:11Speaker 1: three and I'm totally handling it well. I'm just doing
- 1:14Speaker 1: really well. I haven't banned all football television in my
- 1:19Speaker 1: house for the week on the off chance that I
- 1:22Speaker 1: would see something that upsets me, I'm very much handling
- 1:26Speaker 1: it like an adult, joining me to talk through where
- 1:30Speaker 1: we are and where we're going. One of my favorite comedians,
- 1:34Speaker 1: one of my favorite friends, Minneapolis's own Brian Miller.
- 1:39Speaker 2: Hello, Brian, Oh, And I'm also known for handling things
- 1:43Speaker 2: really well at being really calm. So this is a
- 1:45Speaker 2: really good match.
- 1:46Speaker 1: You know. That was my fear. So this is your
- 1:49Speaker 1: second time appearing on the podcast, and your first appearance
- 1:55Speaker 1: was before the New York Giants playoff game. Right, take
- 2:00Speaker 1: it down for our audience. All that happened last season
- 2:03Speaker 1: is we went eleven and zero in one score games
- 2:07Speaker 1: and then I let Brian Miller come on the show,
- 2:10Speaker 1: and ever since, Oh, we have lost four consecutive one
- 2:15Speaker 1: score games in heart wrenching fashion. So I'm hoping there's
- 2:21Speaker 1: some sort of curse of the Miller that by bringing
- 2:24Speaker 1: you back on the program, I need to lift the
- 2:28Speaker 1: curse and move forward. That's what I'm going to tell myself.
- 2:33Speaker 1: So that's your responsibility this week. Your appearance needs to
- 2:36Speaker 1: wash away the bad juju that has covered the Purple
- 2:40Speaker 1: over the first three weeks of the season.
- 2:43Speaker 2: Like cousin Edie. Eddie says, you know, falls down a well,
- 2:46Speaker 2: ees go across, gets kicked by a mule, they go
- 2:48Speaker 2: right back again. I don't know.
- 2:52Speaker 1: It's a pretty weird. It's pretty weird. Regression is a
- 2:56Speaker 1: thing in the NFL obviously. Yeah, you know, see you
- 2:59Speaker 1: don't don't win eleven to one score games and be like,
- 3:02Speaker 1: I bet that keeps happening forever. But I don't know
- 3:05Speaker 1: that I saw it being so drastically shifted the other direction.
- 3:12Speaker 1: A couple of plays here and there can completely shift
- 3:16Speaker 1: both seasons. You know, you look at the Bills game
- 3:19Speaker 1: and the Colts game. If they don't turn that Colts
- 3:21Speaker 1: game around and turn it into a win, and they
- 3:23Speaker 1: don't get that fumble in Buffalo, and they lose those
- 3:25Speaker 1: two games and they're only eleven and five, and then
- 3:28Speaker 1: they stumble on the playoffs. Versus this season, TJ. Hockinson
- 3:31Speaker 1: pulls that ball in right if Week one they don't
- 3:35Speaker 1: turn the ball over a couple times. It's just funny
- 3:38Speaker 1: how it's that old sports cliche. It's kind of a
- 3:42Speaker 1: game of inches and a game of moments. It really
- 3:45Speaker 1: is painfully true. In this moment, it's.
- 3:48Speaker 2: Three snaps that would make this team make absolute sense
- 3:51Speaker 2: three snaps, because then he would yeah, you would say, yeah,
- 3:55Speaker 2: they look about the same. Because I mean that was
- 3:57Speaker 2: the thing about last year. As much fun as it was,
- 3:59Speaker 2: I had so much fun watching it, I never had
- 4:02Speaker 2: that feeling like I did with like the early dominant
- 4:05Speaker 2: Zimmer teams where I was like, yes, we got this,
- 4:09Speaker 2: you know, like where you felt like kind of cocky
- 4:11Speaker 2: when the game started. You know, even if you're a
- 4:12Speaker 2: little bit of an underdog, sure you were like, we
- 4:14Speaker 2: got this great young core. These guys are great tacklers,
- 4:17Speaker 2: and we're going at them. Because I also, I genuinely
- 4:20Speaker 2: do not think the Vikings are one of the four
- 4:22Speaker 2: worst teams in the league. I just that is just no,
- 4:25Speaker 2: that'd be so obviously, and they're even close. I mean,
- 4:29Speaker 2: they're not even the worst team in their division.
- 4:31Speaker 1: You know, me, I don't. I don't handle losing well.
- 4:35Speaker 1: So I've never been one to carry sports with me
- 4:39Speaker 1: once I leave the sports arena. It doesn't I don't
- 4:41Speaker 1: let it affect my family, my day, any of those things.
- 4:44Speaker 2: But we've talked about this right where like you for
- 4:46Speaker 2: fifteen minutes, you're the maddest person in the world.
- 4:48Speaker 1: Yes, and you let it go absolutely and but I
- 4:52Speaker 1: am in this little mini losing streak. I am harkening
- 4:57Speaker 1: upon an experience in which I was a member of
- 5:01Speaker 1: the worst high school tennis team I think in the
- 5:05Speaker 1: history of the United States of America. Worthington, Minnesota was like, hey,
- 5:10Speaker 1: let's have a tennis team. And three or four elder
- 5:15Speaker 1: classmen went out were on the team, and then they
- 5:19Speaker 1: were like, well that's not enough, and so a bunch
- 5:23Speaker 1: of US ninth graders were like, will play. I took
- 5:27Speaker 1: this is how seriously I took it. The first day
- 5:29Speaker 1: I'd never played tennis in my life. I showed up
- 5:31Speaker 1: with a wooden racket because I thought that was funny,
- 5:34Speaker 1: and they went, you're on the varsity and we got
- 5:38Speaker 1: annihilated on a level that was comical. And our coach,
- 5:43Speaker 1: Mike Marcuourt, incredible tennis player in his day. The lessons
- 5:48Speaker 1: I learned watching that man deal with the worst sports
- 5:52Speaker 1: team you've and we didn't like we were like, whatever,
- 5:56Speaker 1: who's got snacks on the bus, Like nobody to watch
- 6:00Speaker 1: him handle that is I think you can call upon
- 6:03Speaker 1: that and be like, you know what you can just
- 6:06Speaker 1: you just focus, you put one foot in front of
- 6:08Speaker 1: the other, don't. You don't throw a ninth grader off
- 6:12Speaker 1: the school bus or slap a juice cup out of
- 6:14Speaker 1: his hand. You just focus on the next week and
- 6:18Speaker 1: getting there. And one week could change everything. And that's
- 6:21Speaker 1: what I'm hoping, Brian, your presence lifts the curse. We
- 6:24Speaker 1: go to Carolina, things go well, one week could change everything.
- 6:29Speaker 2: Now did one week ever change an everything for your
- 6:32Speaker 2: tennis team?
- 6:33Speaker 1: It took three years When I was a senior, we
- 6:37Speaker 1: were average, So kind of a victory. Yeah, going from
- 6:42Speaker 1: the worst team in America to average. Yeah, that's not
- 6:45Speaker 1: a small accomplishment, I guess. But yeah, I think you
- 6:48Speaker 1: and I both believe that one win could get things rolling. Well,
- 6:52Speaker 1: let's talk about this. I think there's a lot of
- 6:54Speaker 1: people running around going this is an easy one. You
- 6:58Speaker 1: gotta get this one.
- 6:59Speaker 2: I agree with the second part.
- 7:01Speaker 1: The one thing I've learned doing a show for the
- 7:04Speaker 1: team is they have a wide reach, does the team,
- 7:09Speaker 1: And so my main goal is to not say something
- 7:14Speaker 1: on my silly little podcast that all of a sudden,
- 7:16Speaker 1: a Panther's defensive back is walking through the tunnel with
- 7:20Speaker 1: a game ball in his hands, going take that sigh.
- 7:23Speaker 1: I remember when we played my first year working with
- 7:26Speaker 1: the team, I did this three keys segment and we
- 7:30Speaker 1: were going against the Packers and my job was to
- 7:34Speaker 1: like give the keys to winning the game with jokes intertwined,
- 7:39Speaker 1: and anytime Wisconsin is in that, yeah, it's dude, it's
- 7:45Speaker 1: hammer time. Like I said, I said a lot. I
- 7:49Speaker 1: said a lot in a very short segment, and some
- 7:52Speaker 1: Packer fan found it online and I don't know what
- 7:55Speaker 1: sort of you know, cans attached to strings, but the
- 8:00Speaker 1: moment they thumped us and they thumped us, it was
- 8:04Speaker 1: like right around Christmas of like nineteen they thumped us.
- 8:08Speaker 1: I opened my Instagram and it was like nine hundred comments.
- 8:12Speaker 1: I was like, oh boy, Daddy's gone viral. Nope, every
- 8:16Speaker 1: Packer fan on the planet was just obliterating me, and
- 8:20Speaker 1: they'd done research on me and my It was brutal.
- 8:25Speaker 1: So I'm never gonna say that a game is an
- 8:28Speaker 1: easy one. It's gettable. There's one that's gettable mm hmm,
- 8:32Speaker 1: and then there's one that's gettable three weeks from now, Chicago.
- 8:36Speaker 1: That's always tough, but it's gettable, which gives you this
- 8:38Speaker 1: cool opportunity. Let's hypothetically Brian say we get the two
- 8:43Speaker 1: gettable pieces of bread in the proverbial three game sandwich sure,
- 8:48Speaker 1: and then that meat that Chiefs game if you beat
- 8:52Speaker 1: Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs, if you put
- 8:55Speaker 1: it together all of a sudden, three and three might
- 8:58Speaker 1: even look better than four and two, if you'd gotten
- 9:01Speaker 1: those four wins against everybody except the Bucks and Chiefs.
- 9:05Speaker 1: Like it is an opportunity, I think to get us
- 9:08Speaker 1: on the right path.
- 9:09Speaker 2: By the way, that internet that Wisconsin is actually just
- 9:12Speaker 2: seven hundred extension cords that go all the way to Chicago.
- 9:15Speaker 2: There's just one long cord to Chicago. Chicago's paying for
- 9:19Speaker 2: it all.
- 9:21Speaker 1: One of the craziest things about this year is the
- 9:24Speaker 1: stats versus like where the ridiculous pace that people on
- 9:29Speaker 1: jj I think he got one forty nine in the
- 9:31Speaker 1: last game, so he was one away from hitting one
- 9:34Speaker 1: fifty every game to open the season. Kirk's stats are nuts.
- 9:37Speaker 1: It's it's outrageous to see. It gives you a little
- 9:40Speaker 1: bit of hope, even though it hasn't translated into wins.
- 9:44Speaker 1: I'm sure that's fun for people. I'm the worst. Are
- 9:46Speaker 1: you a fantasy football guy?
- 9:48Speaker 2: No? No, it's one thing I had too much math
- 9:49Speaker 2: for me.
- 9:50Speaker 1: It's too much pride for me. I'm like, you know,
- 9:54Speaker 1: there could be a really really good like AJ Brown
- 9:58Speaker 1: could be on the board and I'd go, well, I
- 10:00Speaker 1: should probably take kJ Osborne here, Yeah, taking any Eagles.
- 10:05Speaker 1: I still dislike the Seahawks, going all the way back
- 10:07Speaker 1: to Sean Alexander thumping us on Sunday Night Football when
- 10:10Speaker 1: I was a kid. Like so, I'm sure it's been
- 10:13Speaker 1: really fun for the fantasy football world to see these stats,
- 10:16Speaker 1: but for me to see him, for like us to
- 10:19Speaker 1: see him and see the losses, it's almost kind of
- 10:22Speaker 1: like this extra like, ah, doesn't that burn? Don't you
- 10:25Speaker 1: hate it?
- 10:25Speaker 2: I know it's like someone's benefiting, but it's not me.
- 10:29Speaker 2: It's definitely not me.
- 10:30Speaker 1: It'd be like if the devil called into Minnesota talk radio,
- 10:33Speaker 1: that'd be his Collie goes here's my prediction for the year. Yeah,
- 10:37Speaker 1: Kirk is gonna throw for six thousand yards and seventy
- 10:42Speaker 1: two touchdowns. JJ will set the NFL record for receiving
- 10:47Speaker 1: and you won't win a single game. Like That's that's
- 10:51Speaker 1: what it feels like. It almost feels like an evil trick.
- 10:54Speaker 2: I mean, what is it? What a minus seven turnover
- 10:58Speaker 2: after three games it's six or seven.
- 11:00Speaker 1: It feels like minus a thousand is what it feels like.
- 11:02Speaker 2: I mean, there's been several very near interceptions and fumbles.
- 11:07Speaker 2: That's a torrid.
- 11:08Speaker 1: Pace, and I think because they were such crucial turnovers,
- 11:12Speaker 1: it feels a lot like when I started dating. So
- 11:16Speaker 1: I started dating late.
- 11:18Speaker 2: They heard about the tennis.
- 11:19Speaker 1: Yeah, they were like, the worst guy on the worst
- 11:24Speaker 1: tennis team in America wants to date me?
- 11:26Speaker 2: Pass you want me to make out with wood racket.
- 11:29Speaker 1: Yeah. As you know, through my high school in late
- 11:34Speaker 1: teen years, I had an Abraham Lincoln style beard, but
- 11:38Speaker 1: instead of hair, it was zits, and so I wasn't
- 11:42Speaker 1: a prize necessarily, and I did not date. I wasn't
- 11:46Speaker 1: one of those guys who had girlfriends in high school.
- 11:49Speaker 1: And then in my early twenties, the Lincoln zits dissipated,
- 11:55Speaker 1: and then you know, I started trying to date when
- 11:59Speaker 1: I was in college. I remember there was this stretch
- 12:02Speaker 1: when I was like a junior in college where I
- 12:04Speaker 1: went on a few dates in the course of a
- 12:07Speaker 1: few weeks, and they were all incredible dates, with one
- 12:11Speaker 1: moment that I couldn't overcome. Sure, one of the girls
- 12:16Speaker 1: had told me that her sister had named her her
- 12:20Speaker 1: new baby daughter something weird, and so I just started
- 12:24Speaker 1: listing off all the funny things I would want to
- 12:26Speaker 1: name a son, but in a way where I didn't
- 12:31Speaker 1: also say, but I do not want to have a
- 12:33Speaker 1: son right now.
- 12:34Speaker 2: Oh, it's like our son will be named.
- 12:37Speaker 1: Yes. It was a very cruise. That was crucial. The
- 12:40Speaker 1: second week, I just mentioned mid date a date was
- 12:44Speaker 1: going amazing that I was raised on a dog farm,
- 12:47Speaker 1: which is technically correct. I was raised on a farm
- 12:51Speaker 1: where my dad trained and like bread hunting dogs in
- 12:55Speaker 1: his spare time. Like, but I never like circled back
- 12:59Speaker 1: and gave that explanation dog farm without a deep dive
- 13:03Speaker 1: following it. That was a pretty big stumble, right.
- 13:06Speaker 2: It feels like it's a farm run by dogs, you know,
- 13:09Speaker 2: like when the you know, the dogs you see playing poker,
- 13:11Speaker 2: Like they're winding down after a long day of tilling
- 13:14Speaker 2: the soil, running the tractors and whatnot.
- 13:16Speaker 1: It's animal farm except dogs. That's what it feels. Whatever
- 13:19Speaker 1: it is, it doesn't feel good.
- 13:21Speaker 2: That's best case scenario.
- 13:22Speaker 1: Yes, that's that's exactly right. There's a lot of darker
- 13:26Speaker 1: versions of dog farm that we should probably keep off
- 13:28Speaker 1: the show.
- 13:29Speaker 2: Yeah, seventy two puppies in a milk crate while you
- 13:31Speaker 2: while your dad counts a giant stack of dollar bills.
- 13:36Speaker 1: So I am very familiar with doing a lot of
- 13:43Speaker 1: things right only to allow a singular moment to derail
- 13:48Speaker 1: an otherwise better situation. That is what these turnovers feel like.
- 13:52Speaker 1: Sometimes when you have a lot of turnovers, you're also
- 13:54Speaker 1: playing bad football. It just you know, me, I'm not
- 13:58Speaker 1: a coach. I don't understand X. But doesn't feel like
- 14:01Speaker 1: bad football. It feels like infuriating moments that have surrounded
- 14:08Speaker 1: good football. And I mean I think, you know, eventually
- 14:12Speaker 1: a lady married me, so we'll figure it out, right.
- 14:14Speaker 2: Yeah, you can find your Mary Todd.
- 14:17Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 14:18Speaker 2: And by the way, you know, it's what this is
- 14:20Speaker 2: just how things go. Like last year, you know a
- 14:23Speaker 2: lot of things just went the Vikings way, and this
- 14:25Speaker 2: year a lot of these turnovers or a lot of
- 14:27Speaker 2: the non turnovers. You know, other teams are fumbling the
- 14:30Speaker 2: ball and it's just like bouncing right back to them,
- 14:33Speaker 2: you know it just the bounces. A couple of times
- 14:35Speaker 2: have gone that way where you're like, well that you know,
- 14:37Speaker 2: that would have changed, you know, a couple of things
- 14:38Speaker 2: would have changed the complexity of either one of those
- 14:40Speaker 2: games where some of those fumbles went the other direction.
- 14:43Speaker 2: So it's hard to feel too definitive about the Vikings.
- 14:47Speaker 2: You know. It's not like like watching the Bucks get
- 14:49Speaker 2: spanked by Philadelphia, We're like, yeah, there's the Bucks. Like
- 14:52Speaker 2: they still think the Vikings are Bikings are better than
- 14:55Speaker 2: the Bucks overall. I think, yeah, I think it was
- 14:57Speaker 2: weird that they lost. I don't think they lose that game.
- 15:00Speaker 2: They played three more games. I think they went all
- 15:02Speaker 2: three against the Bucks. I don't know what. It was,
- 15:04Speaker 2: just a weird game.
- 15:05Speaker 1: I think that's the thing that has to give you hope.
- 15:06Speaker 1: That's why you have to you have to focus on
- 15:08Speaker 1: a singular moment that's in front of you. You have
- 15:11Speaker 1: to play well, you have to get a win, and
- 15:14Speaker 1: then you go, Okay. You see, that is who we
- 15:17Speaker 1: are because locker rooms. I've said this on this show
- 15:19Speaker 1: a lot, have said this on a lot of shows.
- 15:21Speaker 1: Locker rooms are funny places. And that's the thing. Like
- 15:24Speaker 1: we were the tennis team that would go get drilled
- 15:28Speaker 1: by Redwood Valley and we would be on the court
- 15:31Speaker 1: like Hey, well, hey, what's the snack for the boss?
- 15:34Speaker 1: Who's got that? Like, we just became our identity. We
- 15:38Speaker 1: became kind of our lock Like you lose a couple,
- 15:41Speaker 1: That's what happened last year with the Vikings, right, they
- 15:43Speaker 1: you just start believing in what you are as much
- 15:45Speaker 1: as we the general public, like scoff at sports cliches,
- 15:51Speaker 1: locker rooms tend to truly believe them and they can snowball.
- 15:55Speaker 1: So I think this many turnovers this early, this is
- 15:58Speaker 1: the week that you have to re set the narrative.
- 16:01Speaker 1: This is the week that you have to play clean
- 16:03Speaker 1: football and not turn it over. Get a good win.
- 16:06Speaker 1: So everyone can take a moment and go, that's who
- 16:10Speaker 1: we are. The first three weeks. That is a weird
- 16:14Speaker 1: confluence of events. That's who we are. And then you
- 16:17Speaker 1: try to snowball off that moment, not off the first three.
- 16:21Speaker 1: By the way, speaking of snowballing environments and locker rooms
- 16:27Speaker 1: believing their own narratives, this Miami Dolphins thing is outrageous.
- 16:32Speaker 2: Seventy points.
- 16:33Speaker 1: And it's not just the points, it's the vibe. Yeah right,
- 16:37Speaker 1: it's it's Tyreek Hill set out to prove that he's
- 16:41Speaker 1: so good he can elevate another offense to elite to
- 16:45Speaker 1: a intent, you know, left for mediocrity, intent to show
- 16:50Speaker 1: he's electric. Mike McDaniel, this weird, eccentric play caller who's
- 16:55Speaker 1: like ripping play calls that the rest of the league
- 16:58Speaker 1: is copying the next week. It's just it's got this
- 17:01Speaker 1: nineteen ninety eight Vikings. That's that's what I feel watching it.
- 17:04Speaker 1: It's got Randy Moss because there have been powerful scoring
- 17:09Speaker 1: offenses before, but the ninety eight Vikings changed football. It.
- 17:14Speaker 1: You know, it brought the deep game back. It changed
- 17:17Speaker 1: the way the Packers drafted cornerbacks. It just showed everybody like, hey,
- 17:21Speaker 1: look at what we can do. And you know, and
- 17:24Speaker 1: you have the you know, you had the greatest show
- 17:26Speaker 1: on turf. After that, you had the seven Patriots. Some
- 17:28Speaker 1: teams have done some truly electric things. It just it
- 17:32Speaker 1: feels really special, and it just reminds me of being
- 17:37Speaker 1: a teenage kid watching that super special Viking season.
- 17:41Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, Daniel is really innovating and I love
- 17:45Speaker 2: watching too. That no look shovel pass that he did
- 17:47Speaker 2: that was it was so cool and I'm so glad
- 17:51Speaker 2: of it. To the concussions last year was such a
- 17:52Speaker 2: bummer because you know, I think everybody kind of I'd
- 17:55Speaker 2: kind of given up on him. I thought I didn't
- 17:57Speaker 2: watch a lot of Miami games, you know, from a
- 17:58Speaker 2: few years ago, but you think that guy didn't pan out,
- 18:01Speaker 2: and you know, he had to be a couple of
- 18:03Speaker 2: bad games away from being relegated to aspiring backup, and
- 18:07Speaker 2: then now you know, and you watch the guy now
- 18:10Speaker 2: and you're like, well, where was this?
- 18:12Speaker 1: Yeah, it's really interesting. That's another thing we talk about
- 18:15Speaker 1: on this show a lot, is how just the outrageous
- 18:18Speaker 1: effect that situations have on professional athletes. The one thing
- 18:24Speaker 1: that will be really fun and that I'm rooting for
- 18:28Speaker 1: is I would like Philadelphia to lose. I would like
- 18:35Speaker 1: I would like the Niners to lose. I can't remember
- 18:37Speaker 1: if there's one other undefeated team, but I would like
- 18:40Speaker 1: all the undefeated teams to lose, except the Miami Dolphins,
- 18:44Speaker 1: because since the seventies, that old group of former Dolphins
- 18:50Speaker 1: makes it a big deal to pop champagne when the
- 18:54Speaker 1: last undefeated team loses, and I just think that's a
- 18:57Speaker 1: fun conundrum.
- 18:58Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a funny conunder But also I think those
- 19:01Speaker 2: guys increasingly have become like a metaphor for the boomer generation,
- 19:04Speaker 2: just cackling about how everything was better for them while
- 19:07Speaker 2: they like take pleasure in someone else's downfall and drink
- 19:09Speaker 2: expensive liquor. Yeah, you know, like I think it went
- 19:13Speaker 2: from fun to like, it's starting to feel kind of nefarious.
- 19:15Speaker 2: Old football vampires were sustained by the future losses of
- 19:19Speaker 2: other teams.
- 19:21Speaker 1: Yes, yes, bring me the tears of a tyree Hill
- 19:26Speaker 1: to keep me moving forward.
- 19:28Speaker 2: Yeah exactly, m.
- 19:31Speaker 1: Yes, Jalen hurts sadness yum yum yum yum yum yum yum. Yeah,
- 19:36Speaker 1: it's very like I met those guys.
- 19:38Speaker 2: Text chain was blowing up when they when they added
- 19:40Speaker 2: the seventeenth game. They're like, wait, people gotta win a
- 19:43Speaker 2: seventheenth game, Like high fivemen.
- 19:46Speaker 1: I do like to think about that, Like what a
- 19:50Speaker 1: unique rooting interest it was for that seven Patriots, the
- 19:54Speaker 1: undefeated team in the Super Bowl where they had to go.
- 19:57Speaker 1: They had to They probably all got together like all right, got,
- 20:00Speaker 1: we're gonna get together. We're gonna watch the Super Bowl now.
- 20:03Speaker 1: In order to maintain our place in history as the
- 20:07Speaker 1: only undefeated, all we need to happen is to have
- 20:13Speaker 1: the greatest offense anyone's ever seen, led by the greatest
- 20:18Speaker 1: quarterback anyone's ever seen, one of, if not the greatest
- 20:23Speaker 1: multifaceted tight ends anyone's ever seen, and one of the
- 20:27Speaker 1: two best wide receivers anyone's ever We just need them
- 20:30Speaker 1: to lose to Eli. That's it, to the nine and whatever.
- 20:35Speaker 1: I can't remember. The Giants always came in through the
- 20:37Speaker 1: wildcard to win those titles. To have that happen, and
- 20:41Speaker 1: to have it happen via the catch on the top
- 20:43Speaker 1: of the helmet, Oh yeah, tyree, dude, imagine the party
- 20:48Speaker 1: those old men when they were like just sitting there
- 20:51Speaker 1: watching their record disappear, and then Eli snakes out and
- 20:56Speaker 1: sticks it to a wide receiver's helmet. Bananas. That had
- 21:00Speaker 1: to be a banana's environment.
- 21:02Speaker 2: Oh my god. They had to be happier than anyone
- 21:05Speaker 2: on the planet at that time. And no one's going
- 21:08Speaker 2: remotely close to that as the Patriots.
- 21:11Speaker 1: At Yeah, you had that Steelers team ran to eleven
- 21:13Speaker 1: and zero a couple of years ago. But yeah, I don't.
- 21:17Speaker 1: I think there's so much good quarterback play, and the
- 21:20Speaker 1: league has changed so much, there's so much parody. I
- 21:22Speaker 1: think you're gonna have a hard time getting back to
- 21:26Speaker 1: that moment. Let's flip back to the Vikings because I
- 21:28Speaker 1: will derail this entire show talking about that Dolphins team Carolina.
- 21:37Speaker 1: We get to see Adam Thielen. You know, I think
- 21:40Speaker 1: that is it's Joe Montana and the Chiefs to me,
- 21:44Speaker 1: you know, in a Chiefs Jersey, it's it's it's weird,
- 21:50Speaker 1: you know. I think you're always going to root for
- 21:51Speaker 1: Adam Thelon. I think everybody back home will be rooting
- 21:55Speaker 1: for him to be good enough to have a great day.
- 21:59Speaker 1: But that, yeah, that's.
- 22:00Speaker 2: All you want.
- 22:03Speaker 1: The real storyline is at the moment of this recording,
- 22:06Speaker 1: we don't know Bryce Young Andy Dalton, and you would think, well, hey,
- 22:11Speaker 1: you know, it's always better to play the backup Andy Dalton.
- 22:14Speaker 1: I'm so sick of seeing Andy Dalton as a Vikings
- 22:17Speaker 1: fan that that Cowboys loss a couple of years ago
- 22:21Speaker 1: on Sunday Night football is so seared into my brain.
- 22:23Speaker 1: Where I walked in, I was like, I want the rookie.
- 22:25Speaker 1: I want to see the rookie play. I don't want
- 22:28Speaker 1: to play against Andy Dalton. It's just not something I'm
- 22:31Speaker 1: interested in.
- 22:32Speaker 2: Doesn't it feel like Andy Dalton has actually been in
- 22:34Speaker 2: the league longer than anyone in history, like even longer
- 22:37Speaker 2: than Brady, because like we know, with Brady, you're like
- 22:40Speaker 2: you're thrilled, you know, he brings all this clamor. But
- 22:42Speaker 2: because Dalton is Dalton, he's just he's sort of frustrating
- 22:45Speaker 2: two opponents and friends alike. I don't you know, like
- 22:48Speaker 2: he seems like a nice enough guy, but I never
- 22:50Speaker 2: root for him. Like it's kind of like, I know
- 22:53Speaker 2: the movie is not as long, but if the movie's
- 22:55Speaker 2: much worse, it feels longer. Sure, Andy Dalton feels like
- 22:58Speaker 2: a nine hour documentary at this point, like how long
- 23:01Speaker 2: have you been in this league? But like it's but
- 23:05Speaker 2: it's classic Dalton because like here's the thing. He's frustratingly
- 23:08Speaker 2: never terrible, right, he always gets you those surprise wins.
- 23:13Speaker 1: He's gonna be efficient, he's.
- 23:15Speaker 2: Gonna be efficient, and he tends to be efficient against Minnesota,
- 23:18Speaker 2: and so it just it's the cumulative effect is just
- 23:21Speaker 2: like I can't believe this is still going on with
- 23:23Speaker 2: Andy Dalton. So yeah, I would definitely prefer Bryce Young,
- 23:27Speaker 2: although he's you know, I was over firm regardless, but
- 23:30Speaker 2: he has looked pretty solid.
- 23:33Speaker 1: Producer Jay tells me that Andy Dalton and Blaine Gabbert,
- 23:36Speaker 1: who if you would have made me bet on whether
- 23:39Speaker 1: or not he was still in the league, I would
- 23:41Speaker 1: have said nay. They are the only two qbs left
- 23:45Speaker 1: from the twenty eleven draft. Gabbert is on the Chiefs.
- 23:51Speaker 1: Here's the thing, I actually think Carolina not going against
- 23:56Speaker 1: the Vikings. They've transformed themselves into a fun team to
- 23:59Speaker 1: root for. You know, they have good ownership, they have
- 24:02Speaker 1: a very likable coach, they have the first overall pick
- 24:06Speaker 1: in the draft. They have Hayden Hurst. Hayden Hurst is
- 24:11Speaker 1: a very he was an awesome dude in Cincinnati. He's
- 24:15Speaker 1: a fun guy to root for. And his look it's
- 24:17Speaker 1: like Hockinson.
- 24:18Speaker 2: Hockinson's great because he looks like I drew the Vikings logo.
- 24:22Speaker 1: That's kind of the underrated aspect to tight ends. They're
- 24:26Speaker 1: so big yet not offensive line big that it's impossible
- 24:31Speaker 1: to not let them look unique whatever they are. You
- 24:34Speaker 1: remember the movie The Mask, and the whole thing in
- 24:36Speaker 1: the Mask was whoever put on the mask, it would elevate.
- 24:40Speaker 1: They're like, so Jim Carrey became very silly, but Dorian
- 24:44Speaker 1: Gray became extra evil. That's kind of what tight ends
- 24:49Speaker 1: are like. If you're like a viking ish looking dude,
- 24:52Speaker 1: but you're a tight end, so you're just giant, not
- 24:55Speaker 1: big o line, but just a giant restivet Like you
- 24:58Speaker 1: look like the biggest Viking of all time. If you're
- 25:01Speaker 1: a really handsome guy like Tony Gonzalez, you're like, how
- 25:06Speaker 1: is he looks like a handsome statue? Like a life
- 25:10Speaker 1: I was just.
- 25:10Speaker 2: Gonna say, Tony Gonzalez looks like a statue that's built
- 25:13Speaker 2: that you have to stand very far away to look at.
- 25:15Speaker 2: You know, yes, been carved him out of a mountain.
- 25:19Speaker 1: That's exactly right, and you've got you know, you've got
- 25:22Speaker 1: Hayden Hurst looks like he should be managing a village
- 25:26Speaker 1: of elves somewhere in the Smoky mountains, just like picking
- 25:30Speaker 1: their house up, Like are you okrry doll now elves?
- 25:36Speaker 1: So they they are a really fun team to root for.
- 25:39Speaker 1: I think we're you know, we're not against our favorite team.
- 25:42Speaker 1: So this isn't a matchup that I go into with
- 25:45Speaker 1: any pre existing negativity. I will say I did do
- 25:49Speaker 1: the thing that I like to do on this show,
- 25:52Speaker 1: which is I spent some time learning about their community.
- 25:55Speaker 1: And I'd like to tell you a few things that
- 25:57Speaker 1: I learned before we do our prediction. U First and foremost,
- 26:04Speaker 1: I want to not like the Carolinas, and I love
- 26:08Speaker 1: the Carolinas. I don't know what that is. I don't
- 26:11Speaker 1: know how to explain it, but part of me is
- 26:13Speaker 1: like whatever, I don't want to. But every time I've
- 26:15Speaker 1: been there, I'm like, is this the greatest place? If
- 26:18Speaker 1: you put the Carolinas together. They've got that California thing
- 26:22Speaker 1: where you can be down by the beach and then
- 26:23Speaker 1: you can be up in the mountains. It's I begrudgingly
- 26:29Speaker 1: enjoy the Carolinas.
- 26:31Speaker 2: I think what's interesting about them is that, like Charleston
- 26:33Speaker 2: is a city, is one of the cooler fashion cities
- 26:35Speaker 2: I've been to. People dress really really well in Charleston.
- 26:38Speaker 2: It's kind of like that. It was like an old South,
- 26:41Speaker 2: but like a movie version of it. You know, everyone's
- 26:43Speaker 2: wearing like the seersucker suits and the pork pie hats,
- 26:45Speaker 2: and the ladies are in dresses and everybody.
- 26:47Speaker 1: Yeah, like if Martin Scorsese directed the Carolinas, yes.
- 26:52Speaker 2: But then you go like twenty two minutes outside of there,
- 26:55Speaker 2: and it looks like everyone made their own clothes hastily
- 26:58Speaker 2: in that morning. But I'm but I love it. I
- 27:01Speaker 2: love shrimp and grits, all the shrimp and grits down there.
- 27:04Speaker 1: Charlotte specifically is a unique place. It's then the home
- 27:08Speaker 1: a nice car, but it's just a nice, easy city.
- 27:12Speaker 1: But they are the largest metropolitan area in the United
- 27:17Speaker 1: States without a zoo. I read that in learning about
- 27:21Speaker 1: Charlotte and or are.
- 27:23Speaker 2: They just bad at keeping their animals engages? It's possible
- 27:28Speaker 2: they have a tiger and a lion. They just don't
- 27:30Speaker 2: have a zoo.
- 27:31Speaker 1: They've just done a bad job at running a zoo.
- 27:34Speaker 1: I honestly think the opposite would be even worse. This like,
- 27:40Speaker 1: whoever's the smallest city with a zoo? That's never a
- 27:44Speaker 1: good one. Where you're like, hey, welcome to Parkersburg, West Virginia,
- 27:49Speaker 1: smallest city in America with a zoo. You're like, I
- 27:53Speaker 1: don't think I don't think you guys should have that
- 27:56Speaker 1: at all. That seems like a it's.
- 27:58Speaker 2: Sort of a family run operation. Family run zoo kind
- 28:03Speaker 2: of got Carol basket vibes.
- 28:06Speaker 1: Charlotte is the home of the beginning of America's Gold
- 28:09Speaker 1: Rush in seventeen ninety nine, Conrad Reid was on his
- 28:15Speaker 1: family's property and he found a seventeen pound gold nugget.
- 28:21Speaker 1: It was the first documented goldfinding in the United States,
- 28:24Speaker 1: which triggered the nation's gold rush. And I'm not I
- 28:28Speaker 1: don't have anything to make fun of that. I just
- 28:30Speaker 1: think there's so much now for our senses, like the Internet,
- 28:37Speaker 1: and like I think of all television, moving cars, all
- 28:42Speaker 1: these exhilarating adventures you can go on, and none of
- 28:45Speaker 1: that exists in seventeen ninety nine, So your baseline for enthusiasm,
- 28:49Speaker 1: like things that put you through the roof is far lower.
- 28:54Speaker 1: Even today. If I found a seventeen pound gold nugget,
- 28:57Speaker 1: it would be crazy. Imagine being a guy who there's
- 29:00Speaker 1: not even gold in the country in theory, and you're
- 29:03Speaker 1: just on your folks property and you're like, what in
- 29:07Speaker 1: tarnation is this? Like it's the power ball before the
- 29:11Speaker 1: power ball, that had to been the coolest moment in
- 29:14Speaker 1: human history. Like everybody, what would you do with a
- 29:17Speaker 1: time machine? Honestly, I'm gonna go back and watch how
- 29:21Speaker 1: Conrad Reid reacts when he finds a seventeen pound gold
- 29:25Speaker 1: nugget and then I'm gonna watch how his family reacts
- 29:29Speaker 1: when he tries to convince him that it's a real
- 29:32Speaker 1: seventeen pound gold nugget.
- 29:33Speaker 2: Because you know what he got to do, He got
- 29:35Speaker 2: to bite it. Because whenever you got the gold nugget,
- 29:37Speaker 2: that's the one thing I've learned from the movies. You
- 29:38Speaker 2: gotta bite it, see what's gold? And I really miss
- 29:41Speaker 2: a time when we could bite our money. Would it
- 29:42Speaker 2: be great if you were just like at the store
- 29:45Speaker 2: and you gave someone a fifty dollars bill and they
- 29:47Speaker 2: just like bit into the fifty dollars bill and they
- 29:48Speaker 2: were just like, yup, that story checks out, and then
- 29:51Speaker 2: they gave you your groceries.
- 29:53Speaker 1: That's the one thing I know about today's money. That's
- 29:56Speaker 1: a good way to get an infection. The uh Family
- 30:00Speaker 1: Dollar chain. The original store was opened in Charlotte in
- 30:04Speaker 1: nineteen eighty nine. And I do love the guy who
- 30:09Speaker 1: started that, like just the pitch, because now the business
- 30:13Speaker 1: model has proven. It's like, yeah, put a dollar tree
- 30:16Speaker 1: up there, put a family dollar over here. But imagine
- 30:19Speaker 1: back then, be like, all right, what's my business now?
- 30:22Speaker 1: See here, in the world of economics, profit margin is key.
- 30:28Speaker 1: I intend to have a store full of products where
- 30:33Speaker 1: I charge one dollar. Like, I love it. I love
- 30:37Speaker 1: that model, and I'm really glad he won with it.
- 30:39Speaker 1: I think it's great.
- 30:41Speaker 2: Here's the funny thing to think, in like the seventeen hundreds,
- 30:43Speaker 2: the dollar store would have been the luxury spot, right, like,
- 30:45Speaker 2: oh my gosh, you got this from the dollar store?
- 30:48Speaker 2: WHOA because you know it's a very static number.
- 30:53Speaker 1: Yeah, that's right. It hasn't changed at all. Although let
- 30:56Speaker 1: me let me use this moment on my highly viewed
- 31:00Speaker 1: podcast to send a message out to all the dollar
- 31:03Speaker 1: chains out there. You can't be a dollar fifty. We
- 31:07Speaker 1: were paying a dollar in eighty nine when old Dollar
- 31:09Speaker 1: Tree Jim opened one up in Charlotte. You can't now
- 31:14Speaker 1: all this time later be like inflation. No, we overpaid
- 31:19Speaker 1: back then and now we underpay. Treat us right, Dollar stores.
- 31:23Speaker 2: By way, do what we do in America, keep the
- 31:26Speaker 2: price the same and have an increasingly shoddy product. Yes,
- 31:29Speaker 2: we're not gonna stop now.
- 31:31Speaker 1: Yeah. And speaking of stopping now, I've got one more.
- 31:33Speaker 1: Then we're gonna do scores before somebody takes my show
- 31:36Speaker 1: away from me. They're like, hey, did you listen to
- 31:38Speaker 1: the tailgate this week? No, what happened. I don't know,
- 31:43Speaker 1: so I fell apart. I think the team being zero
- 31:46Speaker 1: and three had him lose his mind, and he delivered
- 31:49Speaker 1: a speech to owners of dollar stores. So maybe we
- 31:53Speaker 1: should see if Chad Daniels will take the show over
- 31:56Speaker 1: moving forward. Maybe that's the right call. Uh. Maybe the
- 32:01Speaker 1: most famous single piece of art about the Carolinas is
- 32:06Speaker 1: James Taylor's Carolina in My Mind and Brian. Although this
- 32:13Speaker 1: happens a lot in music. Although you might think that
- 32:17Speaker 1: that's like, man, I just miss Carolina, what a what A?
- 32:22Speaker 1: What an ode to the Carolina's that song is, that
- 32:27Speaker 1: is not the case.
- 32:28Speaker 2: No, it's just a guy who's just wandering around, getting
- 32:31Speaker 2: in people's way, and then whenever he's like, I'm sorry,
- 32:34Speaker 2: I was, I had Carolina on my mind. It's some
- 32:36Speaker 2: yokel who's like choking the subway entrance. He's in these
- 32:40Speaker 2: he's into Chipotle and he doesn't know if he wants
- 32:43Speaker 2: a burrito bull or if he wants a burrito. You know,
- 32:46Speaker 2: he's got Carolina on his mind. And the whole every
- 32:48Speaker 2: verse of the song. When James Taylor sings it, it
- 32:50Speaker 2: sounds wistful because you're thinking, oh, I've got Carolina on
- 32:54Speaker 2: my mind. Just picture the guy standing behind James Taylor going,
- 32:57Speaker 2: it's a revolving door. I don't care what state you're from.
- 33:01Speaker 2: I'm trying to go to the bank. And is that
- 33:06Speaker 2: the image that you want as Carolina that's your ambassador,
- 33:09Speaker 2: is some like slower forced gump who's just getting everybody's way.
- 33:13Speaker 2: And then when you go, what is wrong with you?
- 33:16Speaker 2: You moron? Goes bump from Carolina and you're like, great,
- 33:20Speaker 2: give this guy the tourism bureau job.
- 33:22Speaker 1: I have Carolina on my mind. I have the Panthers
- 33:28Speaker 1: on my mind. I'm really hoping we win this game. Brian,
- 33:31Speaker 1: can you give me a score prediction in your effort
- 33:34Speaker 1: to remove the Miller curse and bounce this team forward?
- 33:38Speaker 2: Thirty one seventeen Vikings.
- 33:39Speaker 1: Thirty one seventeen Vikings. Okay, I'm gonna go. It's in Carolina,
- 33:46Speaker 1: a little bit of a revenge game for Thielan. I'm
- 33:48Speaker 1: gonna go. Panthers fourteen, Vikings, one hundred and thirty eight.
- 33:55Speaker 1: Thank you for coming back, Brian. We appreciate you and
- 33:59Speaker 1: thank you. Continent Diamond. As always, be sure to like,
