- 0:00Joshua: The following comments were given by a brother in the Lord Don Rule in 2007 in St.
- 0:04Joshua: Louis.
- 0:05Joshua: He is expounding the conversation that Martha had with the Lord Jesus in Luke's account in chapter 10, and how we can take away the same message of our Lord Jesus for ourselves today in this busy society that we live in.
- 0:18Joshua: Here now is Don reading from Luke chapter 10.
- 0:22Joshua: Turn with me to Luke's Gospel Chapter 10 Luke's gospel 10:38 Now it came to pass as they went, that He, that is Jesus, entered into a certain village and a certain woman named Martha received Him into her house.
- 0:48Joshua: And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet and heard His word.
- 0:58Joshua: But Martha was cumbered about with much serving and came to Him and said,"Lord, dost Thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone?
- 1:12Joshua: Bid her therefore that she help me." And Jesus answered and said unto her,"Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: but one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken from her." It's before me, and I trust of the Lord to spend this time together speaking about things.
- 1:44Joshua: We're all occupied with things, and so is God.
- 1:50Joshua: The Word of God is full of things for us to be occupied with, and life is full of things that we are occupied with, every one of us.
- 2:01Joshua: And here in this brief little description of this house that the Lord Jesus visited one day was this woman, Martha, who showed her hospitality to Him, her interest in Him, in inviting Him to come into her house and to serve Him there.
- 2:25Joshua: And as she was serving the Lord Jesus in her house, her heart was not at peace.
- 2:33Joshua: Underneath the surface of her service to the Lord Jesus and to others that were in the house She was troubled.
- 2:43Joshua: She was distressed.
- 2:46Joshua: Because her sister, who was also there in the house and lived in the house with her, wasn't helping her, but she was where the Lord Jesus was in the house, and she had sat down at his feet and was listening to him And so in her distress, Martha comes to the Lord Jesus to, we'll say, complain about her sister's behavior and to ask the Lord Jesus to straighten it out and tell her sister Mary,"Mary, get up and help me." I don't suppose she anticipated the answer that she got.
- 3:30Joshua: But the Lord says to her, Thou art careful and troubled about many things." Maybe you're troubled about some things in your life this afternoon, some things that are bothering you individually, whether you're a young person or whether you're in the final stages of this life.
- 3:58Joshua: It's very easy for all of us to be careful and troubled about many things The answer the Lord Jesus gives to her is an answer that I think at one time or another every one of us needs in our own lives when we are careful and troubled about many things.
- 4:21Joshua: The Lord says to her,"One thing is needful One thing.
- 4:27Joshua: We'll notice a number of one things, and this is one of them.
- 4:31Joshua: One thing is needful And Mary chose that one thing.
- 4:36Joshua: What was it?
- 4:38Joshua: She chose to sit at Jesus' feet and hear His words.
- 4:44Joshua: Regardless of the circumstances of your life or mine at any time, that's one thing that is always needful in our lives No matter what else has to be put aside, we all need one thing all the time we need it.
- 5:05Joshua: Every day we need it.
- 5:08Joshua: We need to sit at Jesus' feet and hear His word.
- 5:12Joshua: I just wanna say for the young people this afternoon, don't simply think about this...
- 5:20Joshua: Don't simply think about what I have in my hands as a book.
- 5:24Joshua: It is more than a book It is God speaking to you I believe it.
- 5:33Joshua: This morning, God spoke to me.
- 5:38Joshua: In fact, we had a conversation.
- 5:41Joshua: Did God speak to you this morning?
- 5:44Joshua: Did you have a conversation with Him?
- 5:47Joshua: I hope you did.
- 5:49Joshua: When you pick up and read the words recorded here of God, they are God speaking to you.
- 5:58Joshua: And no matter where you read in it, God has something in what He's saying for you to apply to your own life.
- 6:09Joshua: And we all need to listen.
- 6:11Joshua: We all need to listen to what God has to say to us.
- 6:15Joshua: And as you listen to what God says, for myself, sometimes I'll stop and say,"Lord, I don't understand what you just said." Help me to understand it.
- 6:28Joshua: Or sometimes I'll say,"Lord, I don't really like to hear that" There's something there that's speaking to my heart or in that case, to my conscience.
- 6:40Joshua: Or other times, thankfully, I can say,"Thanks, Lord.
- 6:44Joshua: I'm enjoying that, that you're saying to me." One thing is needful.
- 6:50Joshua: Choose it no matter what You might be, I don't know if there are any, but I think of this because I have a daughter at the present time who's nursing.
- 7:01Joshua: And because she has a child that's only a few months old, she's up several times in the night.
- 7:07Joshua: She doesn't get her normal night's sleep because she has to care or serve a helpless babe who can't live without her or someone else to care for it.
- 7:22Joshua: Regardless, she needs, just like you and I need, to sit at Jesus' feet to hear His Word.
- 7:31Joshua: One thing is needful, and if we don't have that every day, we will spiritually starve.
- 7:41Joshua: We have to have it.
- 7:42Joshua: We'll have it for eternity.
- 7:44Joshua: The food, we were talking the, today, this morning, about a new creation and a new life.
- 7:51Joshua: Yes, this life that we live on Earth is a physical life, and it has to have food to live.
- 7:58Joshua: Can't live without it.
- 8:00Joshua: We've received a new life from God, and that life has to have food, too.
- 8:06Joshua: The words of God, the Lord Jesus Christ Himself is the food of that life, and that is needful.
- 8:16Joshua: One thing is needful.
- 8:19Joshua: Let's turn over to a verse in the Old Testament, Psalm 27.
- 8:24Joshua: Psalm 27 and verse four: One thing have I desired of the Lord, and that will I seek after, that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to inquire in His temple.
- 8:45Joshua: New Translation here also says,"One thing have I asked." Suppose the Lord Jesus were to come into this room And stop at the chair of each one of us and ask us,"What one thing would you ask or desire of me?" Well, we might have lots of things we would think about, but if you were to narrow it down to just one thing, what would you ask?
- 9:15Joshua: What would you desire of the Lord right now in your life?
