- 0:26We're gonna look at the NFC and some of the
- 0:28challengers to the Philadelphia Eagles. The first one that we
- 0:32will size up the NFC will be the Detroit Lions,
- 0:37the number one seed in most people's mind. They had
- 0:40a chance to do something special, then the injuries caught
- 0:43up to them. They've lost some coaches here, so we'll see.
- 0:46Are the Lions the top team in the NFC that
- 0:49can knock off the Eagles? Can they surpass the Eagles.
- 0:52We're gonna get into that today on today's edition of
- 0:55Football at four. Adam Kaplan is here from the Inside
- 0:57of the Birds podcast. Everybody, what's going on?
- 0:59Speaker 2: Adam, Am? I good to talk to yeah. So you know,
- 1:03it's funny the odds makers. I love looking at these
- 1:06future numbers and they put some things out and you go,
- 1:10sometimes I think they're wrong, or sometimes I think they're right.
- 1:14I actually agree, And we'll get into odds later, you know,
- 1:17as we finish the segment. But the odds makers will
- 1:21just give you a little nugget they agree with me.
- 1:24I don't think the Lions, who were my team in
- 1:26twenty two and they didn't make the playoffs, but they
- 1:28were nine and eight. It was one year I had
- 1:30a schedule virtually, but then the next year they were great.
- 1:33But they've been great last three seasons under Dan Campbell,
- 1:36last two in particular. But man, you mentioned in two
- 1:40new coordinators, that's a problem. And I discovered some other
- 1:43stuff as a researching this team and asking for opinions
- 1:46from people I respect and just where the roster is.
- 1:49But they've been Mike, they were great last season. Just
- 1:53to give you an idea of how great the Lions were.
- 1:56By the way, the Lions play the Eagles in eleven
- 1:59so the Football Philly they were the only undefeated team
- 2:03on the road last and at eight no that that's
- 2:04just incredible. Did you Lions had At one point they
- 2:08had the worst road record ANIF history. Some Well it
- 2:12was during the during the Jim Schwartz era where you
- 2:15just go back to the eighties. So bad. But Dan
- 2:18Campbell's did a football job of turning them around. Yeah.
- 2:20Speaker 1: Absolutely, that's the team. Now, it's for real. This is
- 2:22an a one year wonder. This team's out there. Let's
- 2:25take a look at their outlook. Here. Last year, fifteen
- 2:28and two tied with the best record in the NFL.
- 2:31See NFL. I mean they won the NFC North. They
- 2:34lost that game to Washington No. Forty five to thirty one.
- 2:37I mean, not only their defense is completely fell apart
- 2:41in that game, and now they lose their coordinators. This
- 2:45is number one offense in the league last year, number
- 2:47two in yardage, but their defense number seven in points.
- 2:49They had the injury, and then you know, people thought
- 2:52that would knock them out. Well they still went fifteen
- 2:55and two. So you take a look at the overview
- 2:57and the outlook of that team. New coordinat probably at
- 3:00the top of the list.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Yeah, so let's get started that. So you mentioned the
- 3:03offensive ranks. John Morton's the offensive coordinator. He plays for
- 3:06one season with the Jets of twenty seventeen. He didn't
- 3:09go well. He wanted let go and he had he
- 3:12had He kind of had problems with condissions with his
- 3:15players and getting buy in from the system. His system
- 3:18is largely based on what he learned from Sewn Eaton.
- 3:21He cold plays at us for two years. They'll be
- 3:25a balanced team. But I just don't think Mike, based
- 3:29on what I know, that he's anywhere close, although I've
- 3:31heard some good things about Morton being kriv Ben Johnson
- 3:34is one of the most creative play college I've ever
- 3:36seen in my time being covering this business. So this
- 3:39is the downgrade of me until he proves otherwise. So
- 3:43that's a concern. Kelvin Shepherd, man, I remember covering this
- 3:47a buyer. He's only been This will be his fifth
- 3:50year just coaching. Okay, Mike, Kelvin Shepherd was a former lineback.
- 3:55You remember from a couple of teams. Aaron Glenn there,
- 3:58their former defense coordinator, now the head coach of the Jets,
- 4:01and this is his first year as a play caller
- 4:03and this is only fifth year coaching. That's a big deal.
- 4:06I mean, look, you're talking about guys, who have not
- 4:09proven themselves as play callers. Now, I know the Eagles
- 4:12pulled off something unbelievable where they five two coordinators, they
- 4:16bring two nuns in and they win a Super Bowl.
- 4:18Like that's you can't countle that. Let's be real here,
- 4:21Vic Fangiel is one of the best defense coordinators in
- 4:25ancel history. You know. That's that's the difference, Kevin. She
- 4:28has never never done it before, so we have to
- 4:31be careful. And Kellen Moore obviously had called place for
- 4:35that debt, so we got to beful when we make
- 4:36the comparison. I think that that is a big downgrade, Mike.
- 4:40And that's got the big reason, Mike. When you look
- 4:43at the the numbers, like coming into last season they
- 4:47had eleven and a half twelve win total depending which
- 4:49book you looked at, they're odds now are at the
- 4:52plus one hundred Mike to go over ten and a half.
- 4:55So clearly the money now is on them not being
- 4:58a great football team, probably in the division, but really
- 5:02not being that great all right.
- 5:04Speaker 1: Adam, some of the strengths to this team, because obviously
- 5:07you take a look at that they made some changes
- 5:09to the roster as well. They lost a very very
- 5:14very key player to retirement. So some of the changes
- 5:17to the roster and then some of the replacements in
- 5:20what they did to kind of compensate for the losses there.
- 5:24Speaker 2: All right, So here's what they lost in offense. Frank
- 5:27rag Now, such a good football player, probably not a
- 5:30Hall of Famer, but one of the best centers during
- 5:31his day. He retired a lot of injuries. And then
- 5:34Kevin Zeitler, the well traveled guard, he signed with Titans.
- 5:37So there, Mike, this is a problem. We'll talk more
- 5:40about basnesses in a second. So that those are two
- 5:42big houses for them, particularly rag Now the Sadarius Smith.
- 5:45So there's some people in the league to think that
- 5:48Sadara Smith will signed for much less money to come back.
- 5:51And they do need rush help, which we'll talk about
- 5:53in a minute. Carltons who came over from Tampa Bay.
- 5:57He had some injury issues. He sigled with New England.
- 6:00And Marth Wanner, who was a part time starting safety.
- 6:04He's signed elsewhere with the Dallains. Now what did they add?
- 6:08Mike Tate Ralich will replace rag Now. He's a second repenter,
- 6:12Tyler Williams, you know, Bradholmes their general managers talk about
- 6:16being strong up middle. TYLERK Williams is a first round
- 6:19defensive tech out of Ohio State Boy. One of my
- 6:22favorite underrated corners in the league. Jay Reid a corner
- 6:25from the formerly of the Jets at forty nine ers.
- 6:27He's really good, who replaced Carlton Davis in the lineup.
- 6:30But you know how they struggle to corner last season.
- 6:32They got handled at times, particularly Washington as you mentioned
- 6:36they by the way, they give a five total touchdowns game.
- 6:39That game was at home. They got smoked and Ivanta
- 6:41Mannick now Maddox will he comes back to the Troy's
- 6:44from from my inner States, will play safety and Nickel
- 6:48So look, they added, but they like to bust more.
- 6:52Mike Now they're stress officer at offense. Goff who boy,
- 6:57A lot of people thought he was done with the
- 6:59ram well Ben Johnson rebuilt him. Let's not forget that
- 7:02Jamier Gets is phenomenal, one of the best backs in
- 7:05the league. David Muntgury, great, tannem I'm on Ross, Saint
- 7:09Brown great, Jamison Williams, who's their explosive chess piece to
- 7:15go along with Sat bown Saporter who had a good offseason,
- 7:18who had over ten touchdowns two years ago, and the
- 7:20soul who did not do well early in his credit
- 7:23right tackle. Now he's one of the best game and
- 7:25Taylor Decker is a solid left tackle. Their offense is
- 7:27a major strength. There's no question Mike did the number
- 7:30one offense and now defensively eight. Hutchinson's back for his
- 7:34broken leg. He's ready to go. But you know how
- 7:37much they missed him. As you mentioned, Kirby Joseph won
- 7:41of the best safeties in the league, hight safety in
- 7:42NFL history. Brian Bredrew talking to the Lions. He might
- 7:46have been their best coverage player last season. He could
- 7:49play slot corner, he could play corner, outside corner, he
- 7:52could play afybody's his safety for them. Their weaknesses are
- 7:55very obvious. Other than Hutchinson Mike, they still have not
- 7:59developed good enough cat rush. It was a problem against Washington,
- 8:04it was a problem two years ago, and you're asking
- 8:08those corners to hold up. They and they brought back
- 8:11Marcus Davenport. You might remember him from the Saints and
- 8:14the Viking always heard they brought him back. They did
- 8:17not address they well, I mean they addressed they dressed
- 8:21a sixth round edge rush, but you can't play six
- 8:24round rookie, so edge rushes a problem. The cornerback group, Mike,
- 8:29they're unproven a coin, no question about it. Tarryon Arnold
- 8:32was a first round quest was up and down regstral
- 8:35second round of Bambley played dude injury doesn't run well.
- 8:38I do like DJ Reed, but they got to be
- 8:40bed corner so Mike, to me, they're a ten or
- 8:44eleven win team. This is not a super Bowl team.
- 8:48When you look at the future number. You had to
- 8:50win the NFC North plus one twenty to be the
- 8:53number one seed plus one hundred. The Eagles, Mike, have
- 8:56the shortest odds in the National Football League at just
- 8:59place three twenty five.
- 9:00Speaker 1: Good stuff. As we're taking a look at can the
- 9:03Detroit Lions. Are they a challenger? Can they surpass the
- 9:06Philadelphia Eagles? You know, you take a look at their
- 9:09strengths and weaknesses. That offense is still pretty good with
- 9:12the skill position players, but you wonder how much rag
- 9:14now and losing Zeitler up there, losing two offensive linemen,
- 9:18their line was a big reason for their success. With
- 9:21all the offense, they have great skill players. But do
- 9:23you think they've adequately replaced those two guys? That will
- 9:27be a big, big question there.
- 9:29Speaker 2: Well to Ratlets was the second rounder now what I've heard,
- 9:32he's from Georgia. By the way, not every one in
- 9:35the National Football League I spoke with particular offensive line
- 9:38coach were bigs of his. They thought he was probably
- 9:40a little bit overdrafted. Christian Mahogany out of Boff College
- 9:44who came back from major injury. He's expected to start
- 9:48at left guard for Zeitler. That that to me, Mike
- 9:51is obvious major downgrade. That's a problem. Graham Glass down
- 9:55for the right guard. He's a smoot player, turned thirty
- 9:57three nex month, so he's due to the end of
- 9:59his career. This no longer Mike looks to be the
- 10:02offensive line that we remember one of the top two.
- 10:04Alpus Leagus were number one. That's a problem. And John
- 10:08Morton to me, is not Ben Johnson. We have to
- 10:11understand that we have to acknolge that, so that that
- 10:14does concern me. Mike Austin Lions there were a team
- 10:18for three years, not anymore. I acknowledge they're good. I
- 10:22like the roster. It's not it's not the Eagles, Mike.
- 10:25I know the Eagles had a bunch of turnover but
- 10:27you know what, they were younger. I just I got
- 10:30problems with this thing. I see this them being a
- 10:32super Bowl team. There's no way they're getting super Bowl.
- 10:35They need two edge rushers, man that It's just not
- 10:37they're not good enough on.
- 10:38Speaker 1: Defense with the dig Yeah, the edge rusher you mentioned,
- 10:41you know, in some of the weaknesses there. They lost
- 10:43last year Aiden Hutchinson. We'll see how he comes back.
- 10:47Lock of the pressure there. And you mentioned the unproven
- 10:50corner spot if you're playing, if it's Detroit playing Philadelphia,
- 10:54which I'm on Ross Saint Brown wanted Adam. You remember
- 10:56that he said, we want to be the team that
- 10:58opens up the season because we thought we would have
- 11:00beat Philadelphia last year had we won that game. That's
- 11:03a brash statement there.
- 11:04Speaker 2: By the way.
- 11:04Speaker 1: That yeah, he said that he wanted to play the
- 11:08Thursday night opener because they felt that they would have
- 11:10won if they got a chance to play Philadelphia. So
- 11:13I'm on Ross and Brown saying, very unproven at corner,
- 11:15how did they match up with Phillies offense? That with
- 11:18the lack of edge pressure and the unproven corner spot.
- 11:21That's a tough matchup. It seems like for them the nfcword,
- 11:23they're plus one twenty. That division is very intriguing there
- 11:28because they blew through that division last year at fifteen
- 11:31and two.
- 11:32Speaker 2: Yeah, and Mike, that's see the turnover and their code
- 11:35there and then, and they have more weaknesses of this season.
- 11:38That's why they're not minus only now. They are still
- 11:41the strongest favorite in that division at plus one twenty.
- 11:43But Chicago Ben Jonson with his disciplineing states in the
- 11:47division they're shooting on an offense, don would better. They're
- 11:50gonna be They're gonna be more disciplined. Green Bay is
- 11:52always good. They stink in the playoffs, but they're always
- 11:54Now Minnesota, we just don't know Aj McCarthy. I'm very
- 11:57interested to see what he looks like. And they're kind
- 12:00of a wildcard who have hopefully overachieved a little bit
- 12:02with Kevin O'Connor. But the bottom line is that division
- 12:05is better. I just don't see with the Lions being
- 12:09this great super Bowl team, They've been a great very
- 12:11I've loved the rise when no suff they can do it.
- 12:14It's been a really good story. But honestly, Mike, they're
- 12:18not going to be a good fifteen and two is
- 12:20ridiculous and there's no way. I just to me though,
- 12:24ye will probably win a division. Now here's the next question.
- 12:28If it's not going to be the Lions to challenge Eagles.
- 12:31And what we'll talk more about this is we get
- 12:33through training and when I go on my training camp tour,
- 12:35is it okay? Well a lot of people are thinking
- 12:37it's Wantington who came out of nowhere last season. Who
- 12:40else use could possibly be?
- 12:44Speaker 1: Good? Question? You got green Bay obviously, Minnesota is a
- 12:46wildcard with the quarterback situation, and then the ultimate wildcard,
- 12:50everybody loves the new coach, the quarterback getting paired with
- 12:54a new coach. Could Chicago be that Washington from last year?
- 12:58Speaker 2: That's the one Mike where I look and they win
- 13:01nine or ten? Yes? Can they be last year's or
- 13:04this year Washington? That's a tough one for me and
- 13:09I someone who used to work with Johnson with the
- 13:10Lions tell me it's either gonna be really good or
- 13:13really bad early on either the players role because he
- 13:16coaches really hard. Either're gonna buy in totally. They're gonna
- 13:20be better, people think, or they're gonna turn on him
- 13:22because they can't stand him. I that was kind of
- 13:24funny because he's he's a tough personality, so I needed
- 13:30in that building under matter who flows and work the
- 13:32former head coach. But every year, Mike, there's a team
- 13:35like washing and I did not see that. Lad, Jeff
- 13:38and I and Greg Osel we all saw Daniels. We
- 13:41really liked him last year, but we'd seen them. I'm
- 13:44gonna be no one. None of us saw them as
- 13:45a playoff team. I don't think that I have Jeff,
- 13:48I always has wild card team every year. He's good,
- 13:51good at fighting a team that's than we all expect.
- 13:54I don't know that he had in the playoffs, but
- 13:56I didn't see him as a playoff ill. I'll admit
- 13:58I did not see that.
- 13:59Speaker 1: Last season, Adam Kaplan Football at four. I look at
- 14:01one of the teams that could challenge in the NFC East,
- 14:04the detroituld be in the NFC Detroit Lions, and Adam
- 14:08doesn't feel like they're ready to surpass the Eagles. Here
- 14:11on today's Football at four. All right, Adam Kaplen, good
- 14:14to talk you man, Thank you
