- 2:16got to former mayor Danny Jones is my guest? How are you man?
- 2:21She looked so good? I mean yeah, I'm and the current mayor,
- 2:25Amy good Ones, how are you mayor good? Anything going on in your
- 2:30life last couple of days? Nothing? No, I think that people ought
- 2:31to know this. I mean she's you've you've lost a lot of weight.
- 2:37Yeah, well it's taken me two years forty two pounds. That means just
- 2:40kind of stay off. Well, is this is this? No? I
- 2:45do CrossFit? So is that Tim? Yeah, it's it's that group.
- 2:50It is um which I will just say this and maybe Dave and I will
- 2:53you and I've talked about it offline. I think for women, what they've
- 2:57always told you, and everybody's like, oh, do a lot of cardio?
- 3:00Do running do for me? Personally? For me and women who lose
- 3:05muscle masks. You know, as we get older, and I'm getting older,
- 3:07I'm fifty two now, is that the older you get, the more
- 3:10you're older than I am, daves, I forgot about that, but um
- 3:15so I just I lift heavy weights and I do it five days a week.
- 3:19And when folks said, well, then I you know, oh,
- 3:20you don't say, well, I'm gonna do CrossFit. I don't think it's
- 3:23that necessarily. It just is something consistently five days a week period. I
- 3:28don't care if you swim and lift, and I don't care if you run
- 3:30and lift or if you women have to my age, you have to lift
- 3:36weights to lose weight if you need to, if you need to lose weight
- 3:38and keep your muscle masks. I go six days a week to natilus,
- 3:42and can all say I have a trainer five days a week and we do
- 3:45weight. But when you get with me and you said, I've got a
- 3:47shoulder that's almost gone, it's rubbing metal to metal, by the way,
- 3:52and uh, my cunning my trainer, I she says it important not to
- 3:59heavy weights, but the range of motion in other words, because I can't
- 4:02lift that much anymore. So yeah, yeah, it's like one out here
- 4:06because you know, mayor former Mayor Jones comes in with the with the track
- 4:11suit on and the towel and did you come in and you talk about work
- 4:14all the time. Yeah, that's my excuse. That's it. That's it
- 4:16right there. I like it though it's you know, it's a it's a
- 4:19physical but mental gymnastics that you do it really early in the morning. I
- 4:24do. I have to go really early in the morning, get it done
- 4:26and then because here's why, and you know this as mayor, there's so
- 4:30many things. And I apologize in advance. I'm losing my voice here.
- 4:31My teenagers love that I'm losing my voice. But um, you have to
- 4:35do it in the morning because you have so much to do during the day
- 4:39and evenings, evenings or booked. So if so I did that whole thing,
- 4:42well I'll do it after work. For me, it never works like
- 4:46I was gonna say, when is after work? When? I mean,
- 4:47this is what I know. I don't know anything about anything, but I
- 4:49know this. Find what you like. I love this. By the way,
- 4:53I'm borderline obsessed with it now with the blondes or so, I'm borderline
- 4:59obsessed with that now. I love it. I need it now to feel
- 5:02better for my body and my brain. I need it u five days a
- 5:06week and it makes me it just I just churned better now. I just
- 5:11churned better now. So yeah, let's talk some regatta. Yes you can
- 5:15see the finish line from here. Let's talk. I mean everything started,
- 5:17Let's just take a day better. Let's start with Friday. I mean you
- 5:20had to musically had better than as Friday night, but everything else going on
- 5:24on Friday. I mean, it was a good opening day. Yeah,
- 5:26it was a great opening day. Um, lots of folks down on the
- 5:29boulevard, lots of Stern wheelers. We had twenty six Stern wheelers that showed
- 5:33up. We had lots of boaters, so a lot of water activity.
- 5:38It was hot, it was really hot. Um, but we had we
- 5:42had our entire city team. And Mayer knows this and so, but it's
- 5:45worth repeating always. You know, I say, as I know he has
- 5:47said. Mayor's just one of seven hundred plus employees. Period. That's what
- 5:51we are. We are public servants. We work just like streets, refuse,
- 5:56traffic, park and rex police fire ms. You're one of many who
- 6:00work, But man, are many they kill it. You know, if
- 6:03you if you saw what a boulevard look like. And in fairness to folks,
- 6:08you know, wins kick up or you put you know, we're at
- 6:10a concert, we put down your water bottle. We forget it when we're
- 6:13trying to rush out with a big crowd. But it's a you know,
- 6:15it's it's it's a mess. I mean, there's a lot to clean up.
- 6:18You walk down there in the morning at six am, it looks like
- 6:21nothing happened. I had trepidations when she first did this on July fourth weekend,
- 6:28and I text her and I told her that, I said, because
- 6:30there's worried you're gonna be too hot. Yeah, but I think she was
- 6:33right. I mean I think that, um, well, the candid in
- 6:38the middle. I don't know if I'm right or not. And this is
- 6:40what I said. We've said it on this show, and I think I
- 6:42also said this to you. I don't know if it is or not.
- 6:45Somebody asked me that last night, they said, are you going to ever
- 6:47put it back to Memorial Day? I said, here's what I know about
- 6:50this administration. Maybe we would. We never say no, We never say
- 6:55oh, this is the way that it is. We're so right first year.
- 6:58I'm a big believer in the year of three. Our team is so
- 7:00tired of me saying this. I've said it for four four and a half
- 7:03years. I believe in the rule of three in anything for your fitness,
- 7:08for a new job you have, for a new goal you're trying to get,
- 7:12or new programming you're trying to do in your office. The first year
- 7:15you try something new, you're you're going to get about a half right.
- 7:17You're not going to get it. The second year you fix the mistakes you
- 7:20made in your first year, and the third year you can make that determination
- 7:25does this work? And so our team knows that the philosophy of this administration
- 7:30is give it to three on the third year. Next year, By the
- 7:33way, it's gonna be on fourth of July weekend. You know it's going
- 7:35to be there next year. I know that for sure, because I want
- 7:39to see if the rule of three works. I want to see if we're
- 7:42doing it, because it need you need time to make that happen. And
- 7:46so the first year was really a test pilot, and I said that.
- 7:48I also said this thing, it's never going to be more than four days.
- 7:50If I'm mayor, it's just not going to be maybe four and a
- 7:54half. If it's a weird weekend and there's a half a fifth day,
- 7:57it is never going back under my watch to be this long. In nineteen
- 8:01ninety nine they lost ninety some thousand dollars and Jay Goldman gave it to me.
- 8:07In two thousand and we made almost the same amount we lost the day
- 8:13before, and I reduced it from ten to four. And I think that's
- 8:16a good smart It's a good crunching into a weekend and has some real strong
- 8:20events. That's right. And one of the things too, Mayors, is
- 8:24that people have said about when it used to be around Labor Day. You
- 8:26also have to understand that school starts now like August first or something, and
- 8:31so it used to be back when I when when I was in school,
- 8:33school started the day after Labor Day. Well, public school now starts,
- 8:37at least in most counties the middle of August. By the fifteenth to the
- 8:39twentieth, kids are back in school again. Yeah, at high school football
- 8:43and your dads, you know you're getting your kids ready. You know this
- 8:46too. Guess what I'm thinking about, you know during you know, after
- 8:48the after the first of August. I'm thinking about backpacking new shoes and getting
- 8:54them scheduled. And you know, my boys are in college now, which
- 8:56is a whole new ballgame, you know, apartments and buying shower curtain liners,
- 9:01stuff like that. But I think people get in that mindset. But
- 9:05anyhow, I think that it is. It's working. Um, it's working
- 9:09swimmingly. You know that four day the hours. You know, we tweak
- 9:13that as well. As a matter of fact, it just called UM Kinder
- 9:16from our police department before we got on the show, because I said,
- 9:18this is something that maybe asked. No arrests, no no incidents, no
- 9:24issues besides people getting overheated. Right then that's going to happen a couple of
- 9:28but that's going to happen next Thursday on a random Uh. So we have
- 9:35UM distributors who are there who the Regatta Commission buys from. And then what
- 9:41we did was we had groups sign up. If you're the you know,
- 9:45nonprofit and you've got to you know, your banned group, well they get
- 9:50the tips from it. They get the tips from uh those you know,
- 9:54coke water beer stands. So we wanted to make sure because we're a nonprofit.
- 9:58We're a five oh one, so we do give back. Um.
- 10:01But Mayor, I want to talk about Saturday night. Oh my gosh,
- 10:05there were a few people on the boulevard. I mean literally, I mean,
- 10:13were you at the concert? I remember that. I think the biggest
- 10:16night we ever had was eighty three Miami Sound Machine. It was bizarre,
- 10:26it was. It was Any idea on a on a gu estimate on the
- 10:30number. I mean, I know it's it's it's it's darnire impossible. But
- 10:33any idea on an estimate of how many people may have been there Saturday night,
- 10:35because I can tell you it's more than I've ever seen. I mean
- 10:39more than I've ever seen. And because it's the side street. So you
- 10:43see that great long shot right from the top of the Union Building. That's
- 10:45what everybody has been passing around. So you see that great shot. But
- 10:48but the thing is, you didn't get the levy shot. You know,
- 10:50you didn't get everybody that's in the Levy, which holds I don't know,
- 10:52a couple of thousand people, and those side streets that's the um you know,
- 10:58that's where you pick up a couple of extra thousand people. But it's
- 11:01it's more than I've than I've ever seen in my years of being here,
- 11:05even in you know, some of the late later regatta days. Um,
- 11:09but it's so it's great, right. But I will say this to you
- 11:11and the mayor will appreciate this. People said to me that night walking through
- 11:16the crowd. Oh, you have to be so excited. Oh my gosh,
- 11:18I bet you're just loving it. Here, have a drink of it.
- 11:22No, thank you number one. I'm working, but when I have
- 11:26that many people out, as you know you did, you get a little
- 11:28nervous too, right, I mean, it's not just about somebody getting overheated,
- 11:31which we did, but I just I just worry right in and out
- 11:37people were fired up. And so when it ended and everybody went home singing
- 11:43and dancing and having a good time and restaurant if I get another text from
- 11:46a restaurant tour shop owner saying thank you so much. You know we're set
- 11:50for the year now, thank you so much. I ran out of food.
- 11:52Thank you so much, x y Z. That makes me happy.
- 11:56But until that time, when I see the last little, you know,
- 12:00people trickle out, that's when I can breathe a sien Now, last night
- 12:03may Or, we had some storms that rolled through the area. You know
- 12:05that they were predicted. You know, you put Brian Hughes in charge of
- 12:07things. He was supposed to take care of that and he didn't. So
- 12:11we had some storms cooled in. The gang had to cut the their set
- 12:13a little bit short. There was some damage, I understand to the stage.
- 12:16Where are we on that now? We are we good for tonight?
- 12:18Yeah? No, we are great for tonight. The damage was minimal.
- 12:22It was actually mainly to the front of the stage. We had wins.
- 12:26You know things you worry about it outdoor revenge. You worry about lightning,
- 12:28and you worry about win. We had a pocket of wind that swept up
- 12:31pretty quick. Um, but fortunately nobody was hurt. They played for forty
- 12:39five minutes. Everybody heard celebration, so you know it overall it was a
- 12:45good night. Yes, we had to shut it down a little bit early,
- 12:48but that's okay. I mean, that's the worst thing that happens.
- 12:50Does we have to you know, cut it short? You know, twenty
- 12:52minute program? I'm I'm okay with that. Yeah. I have an old
- 12:56cell phone that I used to use here for techs and it was my mayor's
- 13:01number, and I took it with me when I left. I got a
- 13:05text on it. Were you wearing some fancy heels at the funeral parade?
- 13:09Yes? I was, and horns and horns. Somebody's telling me, man,
- 13:13you look good and thinking of Danny Jones and said you look good in
- 13:18those heels. That and then totally different, and then this morning, this
- 13:22morning at the gym, say, why did you shut down the regattass early
- 13:26last night? Yeah? Maybe maybe need to give her the phone back?
- 13:31Well, I had, you know, did I want to know? Did
- 13:33I have to sure? I mean, that's you know, if you're gonna
- 13:37one of the TV stations ask me the same thing. Oh, you know,
- 13:41big decision. No, it's not a big decision. The answer is
- 13:43there's lightning, their high winds shut it down. That's not that's not that's
- 13:46not a big decision. Safety first, we don't just say it, we
- 13:50actually mean it. Oh, by the way, I have our city employees
- 13:54out there. It's my liability and you don't have to worry about giving tickets
- 13:58back. I mean, that's the thing. So I stayed and I went
- 14:01through each and every because people went underneath the garages. People went down to
- 14:05the levee. I went through every garage with my chief of staff, Matthew
- 14:09Sutton. We went down to the levey. We went through every single row.
- 14:13I said to everybody was left, which there were thousands of people left.
- 14:16Thank you for coming. I'm super sorry we had to shut down a
- 14:20little bit early. Thank goodness. We heard celebration. Hopefully I'll see you
- 14:22tomorrow. They're out of thousands of people and I think he's still in the
- 14:26green room. He can testify. No one was upset, No one was
- 14:31upset. Thank you so much, no problem. Hey are they going back
- 14:35on? Hey they coming back tomorrow. I'm sorry there are. We had
- 14:37a text about that. So my asking if they're coming about that. They
- 14:39didn't stay here. They got to move on to the next show, go
- 14:43on to the next show, which is fine, Which is fine. Plus,
- 14:45you know we've got Kate boytech tonight, we've got Joe d Messina and
- 14:48you want to talk about two country superstars and you've got a wage in your
- 14:52girl atem. Kate's video made its debut at on CMT Friday. Of course
- 14:58I had her on the show Friday. They played the video at the Ballpark
- 15:01last night. You know, there's a thing about kay boy Tech. Not
- 15:05only is she an outstanding performer, she's a really nice person and where she
- 15:09from a logan, Okay, I just want to make sure get that in
- 15:13there. She big. Oh yeah, she's on her way. Yeah,
- 15:16definitely. And Jody Messina I mean the first country music video. Yeah it
- 15:20was her first yeah yeah, I mean professional and it was filmed in Charleston.
- 15:24I mean her entire video, which is available on my Facebook page.
- 15:28The radio. It debuted on CMT and it was all filmed in Charleston.
- 15:31It's gorgeous. Our man Tim Morris had a big part in the videos.
- 15:35Had just cars in the video. I think so so so we moved.
- 15:39So what kind of activities other than the concerts that we got today? Married?
- 15:41Yeah she was so. Um we've got the carnival. The kids love
- 15:45that. Something that we added to um. We we added some things,
- 15:50you know, like the wheelwash and which was really great and that was on
- 15:54Friday night before better than ezra h. But something that was important for us
- 15:58was to do a fun, free kids down a magic Island because what we
- 16:02wanted is to make sure that the littles that I call them grow up with
- 16:04the regatta. Listen. I got a ton of stuff for adults to do
- 16:07any there's tons of stuff for you and I, but the kids. There
- 16:11was nothing to do for the kids. And so I wanted to make sure,
- 16:15Yes, the carnival fine but free, Jupiter Jumps, free phone machines,
- 16:19free phase painting, free character, you know, getting yourself something to
- 16:22eat and drink free, free, free, free, free down at Magic
- 16:25Island. That was important to me because I want our kids to feel like
- 16:30this is your thing too. Come and look at the boats, have a
- 16:33good time. But also, you know, let's not break the bank of
- 16:36parents who are working and want to have their kids enjoy the regatta as well.
- 16:41So that's going on before the concerts. But we have you know,
- 16:44one hundred vendors, sixty of them or food. Oh my gosh, I
- 16:48will say this with all my our big fitness talk. I've been really bad
- 16:52this week. I'm just gonna go ahead. You get a pass, you
- 16:55know, I mean like super super bad yesterday. I mean I ate like
- 16:59a toddler. I had slushies, slurpies, I had hot dogs, I
- 17:03had are the Bahama Mamas out there it's that what's up. It's the gouss
- 17:10mohow that I saw the I saw one of the trailers and I think it
- 17:14pork sandwiches, and I mean, I just am eating like I'm going to
- 17:18the electric chair. It's just as I'm I'm shoveling it in. And you
- 17:22know, people are so sweet because they're like, you're running around, you
- 17:25haven't eaten today, and they hand me a plate of food. And you
- 17:27will know my personality. I'm not the girl who says, oh, no,
- 17:30thank you. I'm like you got a fork an extra spin. Yeah,
- 17:36tomorrow, Let's talk about tomorrow because I know you get to get out
- 17:37here. Let's talk about tomorrow. Tomorrow is going to be wonderful. We've
- 17:40got the symphony, We've got fireworks, uh something else that we're doing.
- 17:44UM. I want to give a shout out to Martha b McKee, Martha
- 17:48who we lost years ago, who used to be the Regatta um director at
- 17:52McKey, Bill McKee's late wife, Martha b McKee UM. We have named,
- 17:59thanks to Bill and his support in her honor um the Volunteer of the
- 18:03Year Award that will be UM that will be announced because we didn't do this
- 18:07regatta without our sponsors, and we certainly couldn't do it without our volunteers.
- 18:11So we have that presentation between folks, and we've got to some great gospel
- 18:19music in the morning. I think Woody Woods is going to be there early
- 18:22as well. Give away those awards and again have just a great time on
- 18:26the river. Our stern wheelers say to me, as they said to me
- 18:30last night, um which I love. I want my space back next year.
- 18:34Put me down for this space. As our vendors say, I want,
- 18:37I want my space. We did have a text of the show.
- 18:40Maybe you can address space, said, and then we'll let you go out
- 18:42promise. This is what about the food vendors who paid for prime Boulevard spots
- 18:47were forced to move to Capitol Street. Any anything on that, Well,
- 18:49I'm not sure people were forced to move to Capitol Street. If somebody wants
- 18:52to text me and give me specifics, recall the office. I'm happy to
- 18:55talk to you about it. Here's here's the problem with a successful event.
- 18:59We ran out of space. Every vendor from last year, every single vendor
- 19:03minus one who had a technical issue with their truck or a physical issue with
- 19:07their truck wanted the same spot and they wanted to come back. Well,
- 19:10if you want me to grow, I could be careful about growing because grows
- 19:12sometimes comes with problems. We added so many more and we got in as
- 19:18many as we could. But we tried to do like a little vendor market
- 19:22down on Capital. I don't know if it works or not. Maybe it
- 19:26did, maybe it didn't, Maybe we switch it around. It's something new
- 19:30that we tried again. If it worked, we'll do it again. If
- 19:33it didn't work, we won't do it again. But we we didn't.
- 19:36We tried not to turn any one away, but we had limited vendor space
- 19:40because almost every single vendor said I want to be back. And I made
- 19:45it a point this year to go to every single vendor and say thank you.
- 19:48I appreciate you being here, every single vendor that we have, and
- 19:52they all said to me, I want my space back, And I said,
- 19:55that's a Jane, that's a Jane thing. Jane handles that. She's
- 20:00a superstar. She's a superstar. We couldn't do it without her. But
- 20:03you know, kudos kudos to to folks who made and paved the way for
- 20:08us to bring this back. And um Mayor it was good being with you.
- 20:11This we tell Jane, I said, Lowe, I will do it.

- 20:33But the July where I applied for the grant, she called me back and
- 20:40she told me, you didn't pay your taxes. And see I was out,
- 20:44I was out of state. This was a private phone call. I'm
- 20:45sure she may know. The point is I went right down and paid them.

- 24:25com Former mayor Danny Jones is with us right now. I'll give us a
- 24:27couple more memories that you've got from Regatta's past. Well, the huge crowds
- 24:33and I think the reason that it started slowing down was first thing. Entertainment
- 24:41got very expensive, the sponsors started fleeing, and the crowds got older.
- 24:48I mean, and we didn't. I think this mayor hurt key to her
- 24:52success. And I tried to do this. It was to predicate everything on
- 24:57the youth, and it'll work out for everybody. It's like a church or
- 25:02anything else. If you make it about the youth, it'll become about everybody.
- 25:06And if you go into a church, you see all gray hair.
- 25:11A church ain't gonna be around in a few years, ten and fifteen years.
- 25:15But try to make it about the youth, it'll become, and then
- 25:18it'll become for people like me. I didn't. I don't. I don't
- 25:22go this stuff anymore. But there's a couple in my building, Tim and
- 25:26Erica Bailey, and they split their time between here in Atlanta, and they
- 25:30sure went out there, and she used to be executive director of the Democrat
- 25:34Party and the older I see older people walking down there, So it's it's
- 25:40always for the youth. And the second thing I'd say to her, and
- 25:41I don't know if she'd listened or not, however long you want to stay
- 25:45there, if you want to stay there seven terms. Stay there seven terms,
- 25:49but don't stay one term longer than you want to be there. Because
- 25:52I did, and the whole last year got got last the longer went on.
- 26:00Couldn't wait too it for What was it about that about that last year?
- 26:02Because you've talked about that before. What was it about that last term
- 26:04of yours? Or maybe that last year or so in office? I was
- 26:11well, first thing, the great needle wore and I had gotten back on
- 26:17the air, and that's really what I wanted to do. And Plus if
- 26:19I had left after my third term, I could have opened a restaurant,
- 26:22had the energy to run it. By the time opened the restaur ever in
- 26:26Quarrier Street, which wasn't the greatest location, but I'm still glad I did
- 26:30it. It was I mean, I was having trouble physically when I was
- 26:34opening up. So after three years, I'm just couldn't walk, David,
- 26:38and I still can't my left shoulder, which is basically running rubbing metal to
- 26:44metal, you know, but my shoulders are very important in the restaurant business.
- 26:48Well, bones the bones is the people took the xtray of it said
- 26:51there's nothing between the two bones. There was just so I'm gonna try to
- 26:56get that done. So talking to a former mayor of Danny owned so I
- 27:00five any life is presented apart by Travis Willard. You're Edward Jones financial advisor,
- 27:03just off to Day's Valley accelearned how Travis can help you reach your financial
- 27:07goals? Is that Edward Jones dot com. We called Travis Willard today three
- 27:11or four three nine, seven fifty five fifty three for your Edward Jones Financial
- 27:15Advisor Travis Willard, Edward Jones member SIPC. He got several things I want
- 27:18to talk to you about Danny. As always, Danny's open to take your
- 27:19phone calls and texts. And I guess I call him up where you do?
- 27:22Yeah, yeah, because it bothers me. It came out this morning
- 27:26and the first time I voted. I voted in nineteen seventy two, Joe
- 27:32Biden was it was his first term as Senator and he got elected to He
- 27:34really wasn't supposed to win that they had a popular Republican, but he won.
- 27:38He worked Hardney won. He was twenty nine years old, and even
- 27:42though his politics are not my politics, I've always found him to be a
- 27:47likable guy. I think the people in the Senate that served with him liked
- 27:51him. But now and I don't want to spend I'd recommend the Republicans quit
- 27:56spending all this time on Hunter Biden. But Hunter Biden in Arkansas, he's
- 28:02got that that baby, that child that's three or four years old, and
- 28:07he wouldn't let the child have the Biden name as part of the settlement.
- 28:11And there's no there's no recognition from the family about this baby. And if
- 28:19I don't see that baby in the White House before they leave, I'll despise
- 28:23Joe, despise him because it's not right. I had. I was in
- 28:30a sense similar situation. I did the best I could as long as I
- 28:33could, but this is just a little girl, and I was angry about
- 28:37it to hurt me. Yeah, So I want to talk about them about
- 28:42the Kent Carper situation. Okay, The nine one one tapes have been released
- 28:47from the woman who's accusing Commissioner Carper of committeeing that lou dagback in May May
- 28:51May fifteenth, His family, through themselves and who spokespersons have said everything was
- 28:56a big muster misunderstanding and that the incident was related to his medical condition.
- 29:00He continues to recover from heart surgery. They also say he had a stroke.
- 29:03There is the issue of an email sent by mister Carper to the girlfriend
- 29:07of the police officer allegedly involved in the investigation, asking whom she'd be interested
- 29:12in a job the superintendent of the golf area there Big Band mister ben Celano,
- 29:17on the show a couple of weeks ago, said that Commissioner Carper,
- 29:19nor any other commissioner can offer someone a job like that. It wasn't an
- 29:25official he said. He asked her if she'd be interested. Yeah, he
- 29:27asked HER's one commissioner. So in essence, what he did was he gave
- 29:32him. He gave. He was offering her the sleeves off his vest,
- 29:36and if you know, vest don't have sleeves. He didn't have anything together.
- 29:40Let me let me do this from the other side. Let me try
- 29:42this. I'm not sure this case, however, manifest. I mean,
- 29:48first thing, you've got a guy that does have health issues, and of
- 29:52course I've had prostate cancer. I don't know what his situation is, but
- 29:56guys, certainly, when you get to be seventy years old, you become
- 30:00a more frequent traveler. I'm talking about bathroom wise, who knows what he
- 30:07was doing down there? So he had it out. So you get the
- 30:11woman. First thing, she may not testify. I don't think she knows
- 30:15what. She may not have known who she was calling him on. And
- 30:18so I've seen some interesting things go on in the courtroom. Really, I've
- 30:23seen some great trick shot artists as lawyers. So he asked her, he
- 30:29said, so you think you saw him pull it up? Yeah, yeah
- 30:32I did. Did you know he has and I don't know that he does.
- 30:37Did you know that he's incontinent? And you say, well, no,
- 30:41I didn't know. Is it possible? Man? And all you have
- 30:45to do is create a little doubt. You don't know what's going to happen
- 30:48here. And then if they can get rid of the predicate crime that allegedly
- 30:53occurred down at Daniel Bin Park, then the email becomes me less because there's
- 31:00no offer of anything to try to bribe somebody. If there was nothing to
- 31:06bribe him about. So they can make the first situation go away, they
- 31:10can make the second situation go away. I've watched a lot of trials.
- 31:14I'm not a lawyer. I've watched a lot of trials and a lot of
- 31:17courtrooms as a reporter. I watched the whole Charlie Brown show. Shared Brown's
- 31:23brother when he was Attorney general. I watched that whole trial. I've seen
- 31:27some lawyers pull some rabbits out of their hats, but there are some mitigating
- 31:33factors here and in a courtroom, all you have to do is create doubt.
- 31:38And now it could be and this is what you hope will happen,
- 31:44that they settle all this. And I've always thought about, if you've got
- 31:48bad news, make it all come out at one time, in other words,
- 31:53the whole email and the situation down Daniel Park, and make it all
- 32:00come out at one time, and you solve it all on one day,
- 32:04and then you wash it all out in one news cycle, and you admit
- 32:07you made some mistakes. But I said, I hope you remember some of
- 32:10the good things I did, like a judicial building over there, and but
- 32:16you got you can't let this thing bounce along like a basketball, because then
- 32:21it just become news news news, find it becomes what it looks like.
- 32:23Is it just one allegation after another at that point or one bad point after
- 32:29another when in reality, it's all coming together. We already know that one
- 32:31Republican has announced, Chris Walters, he was on the show last week,
- 32:36that he's going to run former state senator. He is going to run for
- 32:38mister Carper's seat. We don't know what Kent Carper's going to do at this
- 32:42point, you care to hazard a guess. I think he may run.
- 32:46But now, as a Democrat running this year, running next year, it's
- 32:52not going to be easy. Number one. It's a Republican year in a
- 32:55Republican state, in a Republican mostly republic Lincoln County. But the Democrats,
- 33:02I mean the Republican gonna have a strong top of the ticket. There'll be
- 33:07a sweep. Democrats are going to try to figure out reasons to go to
- 33:09the polls, and so it's a lot of these races you're going to be
- 33:13solved in the primary. And if I was Kent, he didn't seek my
- 33:19political vide think a second time before I thought about running, because if he
- 33:22can somehow mitigate some of this, and you know, of course Kent loves
- 33:29being in the center of things, and I've known him for over fifty years.
- 33:34So it's it's gonna be tough for him to step away from all that.
- 33:37What you're gonna see, We'll say this, we'll go to break.
- 33:39What you're gonna see from a lot of the political consultants, Danny Is,
- 33:44they're already, you know, saying though whether you know, the next governor
- 33:46said of West Virginia is going to be a Republican. We already know that
- 33:52most of the House of Delegates and state Senate seats around the state are going
- 33:54to go to Republicans. Are going to have token a competition, but that's
- 33:59going to be about our dreams. So so now what they're doing is,
- 34:01and the Greg thomas Is of the world, what they're doing is they're focusing
- 34:06on things like judicial races and county commissions and things of that nature. Because
- 34:09they're already saying that they've got the capital locked up. I think that that's
- 34:14probably that's probably good. I never dreamed about to see this in the House.
- 34:20It was eighty twenty, but we only had twenty Republicans. Farrell Johnson,
- 34:23who was the preacher, who was the preacher of the House, he
- 34:28said, if you folks are in the amen corner, we do what we
- 34:31want, and you say amen, you know, and and now it's just
- 34:35it's ten unbelievable. What you're seeing now is on the county level. And
- 34:40I don't have anything to confirm this, and I'll say this and go to
- 34:44break. But one particular county last week, I was told, and I'm
- 34:46going to talk about it a little bit later on, there's one particular county
- 34:50in southern West Virginia, my homeland that the sheriff, the I think it
- 34:57was assessor, and the county clerk all in one one day changed their party
- 35:00from Democrat to Republican. Now that's what I was told was gonna happen.
- 35:04I'm gonna have an update on it later in the week. But in southern
- 35:07West Virginia, again where I'm from, when we didn't have enough Republicans to
- 35:10be poll workers when I moved back to Logan County in the early nineteen nineties,
- 35:15we didn't have enough Republicans to be poll workers. And the people down
- 35:20there, you know, it was I was grown up. The big the
- 35:22big power down there was Earl Ray Tomlin's dad, and then over in Lincoln
- 35:28County, Lloyd Jackson's father, and uh, but this has just changed,
- 35:32and we've gotten some good people out of it. But we've lost some good
- 35:37people. I mean, I think Lloyd Jackson is the best, the young
- 35:40Lloyd Jackson, the one my age. I thought he's best legislator I ever
- 35:45saw a lot. It wasn't he. And I'll tell you who else was
- 35:49good. Is Steve Williams. He's gonna I think he's gonna run for governors
- 35:52a Democrat. Yeah, it is nine forty three. We need to take
- 35:57a break. I want to get Danny. We're gonna go to the US
- 36:00Supreme Court because I want to get your opinion on a couple decisions from last

- 38:44producer today. Former Mayor Dandy Jones is here. Danny, I want to
- 38:46get your opinion on a couple of Supreme Court cases. Number one, the
- 38:51website case US Supreme Court last week sided with a web designer. This was
- 38:54in Colorado who did not want to do a website for a gay wedding.
- 39:00The website designer, Lady Bevan even Lori Smith, sued the state of Colorado
- 39:05and one she. I think that this started with the wedding cake controversy that
- 39:12went to Supreme Court and they threw it out by a technicality. I think
- 39:15when people try to make people create stuff that they don't want to create because
- 39:22of religious objections, I think you ought to step back. What if it
- 39:25had been a Muslim cake shop and you said, well, I want to
- 39:29do a gay or a Muslim They said, I'm sorry, man, we
- 39:32don't do that. Well, you didn't take them to court. Well,
- 39:35there's a big difference, and I agree with you, Danny. There's a
- 39:37big difference between refusing to serve the person and refusing to serve a particular service
- 39:44that they wanted. Yeah, I know you and are on the same page
- 39:46on that. I mean, I mean, and I always give this example.
- 39:50In my hometown there were two bakeries and there was one bakery that if
- 39:53you wanted to have a like an adult theme cake, people would do somebody
- 39:58turns fifty, you know, some sort to sexual thing. The one bakery
- 40:01would not do it, but they would send you to the other bakery.
- 40:04They would say, you know, we got a lot of Christian ladies here
- 40:07that don't like to do that. But we're not refusing to serve you.
- 40:09We're just refusing to do that particular Probably we'll sell you a cupcake. Well,
- 40:14we're just not going to draw all things on it if there's a cake
- 40:16on the shelf, you know, like there is in somebody these delis around
- 40:20here. Yeah, but I think that people ought to be respectful, and
- 40:23that includes the wedding cake case. The guy didn't want to do it,
- 40:28you shouldn't have to know he did not refusing service. He's just refusing to
- 40:31do that. Over there on the shelf you can buy and there exactly.
- 40:35I agree. He's two little miniature men you can put on top of it.
- 40:37But don't ask me to do it because I don't buy that. I'm
- 40:40right there with you. The second one, Danny's on student debt. The
- 40:45Justice has struck down the President's program, which has gone through a lot of
- 40:47delays of courts in the court system, would have allowed the students here um
- 40:53they would be eligible to cancel up to twenty thousand dollars in debt. Supreme
- 40:57Court and strike it down. They should have first thing, you know,
- 41:00the Senate and the House sent him a bill stopping it. Did you know
- 41:04that he'd be total And it's not the that was never the intention of the
- 41:08Heroes Act. And you can always do anything you want, or would try
- 41:12to do anything you want, but we don't have this kind of money anymore.
- 41:15People need to start talking to each other. We've got problems in this
- 41:20country, and debt is a big one. Thirty two treeing and counting,
- 41:23and the nobody talks about it, and any good leader ought to get out
- 41:30and say I'm putting three commissions together, and I'll put retired Paul not like
- 41:35on. There's a former Senate in Missouri named Jim Tallant, very bright guy.
- 41:40He'd be a Republican. And then you could put that woman that was
- 41:45Heidi high camp Shed and she would be a good one to put on with
- 41:51some academics and with some bankers, and to try to explain to the American
- 41:54people from a nonpartisan aspect as the danger of all this. Because when I
- 42:01said one time I was here in an opy that the best days are behind
- 42:05us. That's why, Yeah, you can't keep doing this. This is
- 42:09not a Republican Democrat thing. Because everybody that wants to scream about Donald Trump,
- 42:14how much did he add to the national debt? He was the worst.
- 42:16He was absolutely the worst. He was. I mean, he's not
- 42:19a conservative, but and plus his views on God don't get started in Ukraine.
- 42:24I mean, and Biden slow, he's he's like General McClellan. He's
- 42:29got a case of slows. You know, that's what Lincoln said about General
- 42:32McClellan. And he giving the s sixteens, getting the tanks getting whatever they
- 42:37want. And by the way, why don't we try to buy that Russian
- 42:40warmonger that turned against Putin. We ought to pay him and let him the
- 42:45wagner. All right. Final one I want to ask about is a front
- 42:49bit of action. Um, this was kind of a fifty. This wasn't
- 42:52the win that conservatives wanted in this because they're still going to be race,
- 42:59can still be fat, can still be a factor in college emission, but
- 43:02not like it was. But it's going to take some work. In other
- 43:05words, you got to explain something. I mean, it's got it's gonna
- 43:08be a work of art to be able to do that, and maybe they'll
- 43:12find a way around it. Um. I've got very mixed feelings on this
- 43:17because, um, I remember when we had two lists to hire Charleston police
- 43:22officer because there's no blacks. And I just don't have a good answer for
- 43:28this one. In California when they had when they had Affirmative Action, six
- 43:34percent, we're black. Now they don't. It's two percent. And I
- 43:38don't know what to I just it's very tough. I think college education is
- 43:44very overrated, and um, I think that people ought to consider the military.
- 43:51I tell young people that every day, have you considered it? And
- 43:53now they pay you? I didn't get it was laughable. Plus you can
- 43:59pick up courses while you're there. I was taking English one or one on
- 44:02Oconnaba and I would have finished it, but I had to go to Vietnam.
- 44:07And but you can do that in the service now. Plus you up
- 44:08to GI bill. But these loans are responsible, these college loans and the
- 44:14free money for college, and these these easy to get loans, they're responsible
- 44:19for the jack up and the prices at these colleges. That's that's what driving

- 47:43for Danny says our politicians who flip parties to avoid being voted out truly part
- 47:47of the party that they flipped to see like they'd be someone you can't trust.
- 47:52I think they're part of the survival party. I think that people want
- 47:55to stay there and those jobs that you're talking about are not partisans Stenny.
- 48:00I mean, there's no Republican way to be assessor exactly, but there is
- 48:06that mindset right now in West Virginia and in other parts of the country.
- 48:08And it was this way with Democrats when they were in power too. Would
- 48:10people come at and they say, if you've got a D after your name
- 48:15right now, you're not going to get elected no matter what. Only one
- 48:17Republican to be shriff since in nineteen fifty two, and you're looking at him,
- 48:22and I was very proud to being able to maneuver to go outside of
- 48:25politics and did he get elected on my own personal basis, And I was
- 48:30very proud of that, both as sheriff and as mayor Texas. It turns
- 48:34out the whole gay website case was hypothetical. The man named is straight and
- 48:37didn't know he was being used in the case. Why is the Supreme Court
- 48:40ruling on hypotheticals to look into that? Thirty two Texas thirty two trillion dollars
- 48:45in debt. But let's not text the wealthy closed tax loopholes or forbid offshore
- 48:51storages of money. There's not enough money, well you unless you start confidence
- 48:55skating wealth. And that's the Bernie Sanders way. But what people don't understand
- 49:00about capital formation, it's not cash. I mean, you can confiscate half
- 49:05of Jeff Beza's Amazon stock, but once you sell it, the price is
- 49:09going to go to nothing. And it's just you need to understand about economics.
- 49:15But taxes come out of income and property and stuff like that, and
- 49:20there's a lot of taxes that we pay. But we can't keep doing this.
- 49:24Tex says Dave, great program, great here in mayor Danny on the
- 49:28show with you. Please have him back anytime Danny wants on, Danny could
- 49:30come on. Tex says people are blaming white people for ruling on affirmative action.
- 49:36It was two Asian students who filed the lawsuits against Harvard, and that's
- 49:40a matter of perspective. You say, well, how do you feel about
- 49:43that, Well, a vis Asian, I'd be Bernie Dagon happy Texas.
- 49:46Biden and Pelosi both admitted that he didn't have the constitutional authority to do it.
- 49:51Angry people need reminded he is not a king or a dictator. He's
- 49:54an employee of the people and all who work on Capitol Hill. All right,
- 49:59I want to you and I are both fans of of of journalism on
- 50:04television. I mean we watched Meet the Press and all these different shows.
- 50:07You told me during the break, you want to tell me a story about
- 50:08Donna Brazil. I was on the ABC Sunday, tell me tell me all
- 50:13the quick things that I'm in the Atlanta airport and I recognized her. And
- 50:16I've read one of her books. It's called Hacks and Why Hillary Clinton Lost,
- 50:22and it was very telling and plus her own personal lifestyle. She likes
- 50:25drinking Johnny Walker Scotch. I mean, she's she's I'll tell you, she'd
- 50:30be fun to hang out with if I was still drinking. She's a man's
- 50:32woman, she is, and she she I saw her in the Atlanta airport.
- 50:38She's a great, big woman. I mean as tall as I am.
- 50:40Now I'm not talking about heavy, but she's tall. She's thick.
- 50:45And I went to I walked up to her and I learned just from Governor
- 50:49Moore, do you mind if I say love, Well, of course not.
- 50:52And I said, well, I'm the mayor of the largest capital city
- 50:55in West Virginia, Charleston, and I just see on TV and enjoy your
- 51:00commentary. We're not of the same elk politically, but I enjoy your stuff.
- 51:05He said. She said, were you She looked at my age.
- 51:08Were you having the service? And I said, yes, ma'am, I
- 51:12was in the Marine Corps in Vietnam. Well, thank you so much for
- 51:15your service. And she was so nice. I can't tell you how kind
- 51:21she was. And I'd just she'd just be a fun person to hang out
- 51:25with, right, I mean, if we forget that sometimes, Danny,
- 51:28I think in this this era of everybody hates everybody, uh, you,
- 51:32people can actually get along. I mean they really can rock cuts in real
- 51:37quick. Okay, go ahead. He was a Republican. Yeah, and
- 51:39when when when Reagan and Nancy got in the White House, he says,
- 51:44I think it's terrific. And um, that's a good it's a good thing
- 51:47to watch on HBO. But you have to realize he had a very gay
- 51:52lifestyle privately. You you told me about that, And there is this documentary
- 51:55and my wife and I plan to watch it a holiday weekend. We're gonna
- 52:00watch it five any line brought you part about Husbins Pizza by any regular price

- 52:12you for having me. This is always fun, always fun. All right,
- 52:14Well, have you on again real soon? No show tomorrow. When
- 52:16I come back on a Wednesday, We're gonna spend some time talking about Girls
- 52:20Night Out, which, believe it or not, is coming up here real
