- 0:12Waiting is one of life's greatest tests.
- 0:16We wait for answers. We wait for healing. We wait
- 0:20for open doors. Sometimes we even wait for God to
- 0:24do what he has promised. But what if the delay isn't
- 0:28because God has forgotten? What if
- 0:31God has been faithfully working to accomplish His word all
- 0:35along? That's exactly what an almond branch taught the
- 0:39prophet Jeremiah. Welcome to Traveler's Tales, brought to you by
- 0:43Enjoying the Journey. I'm your host, Greg Dowdy.
- 0:46One of the joys of studying the Bible is discovering
- 0:50that every detail has meaning. The people
- 0:54who first heard God's Word lived in a world filled with
- 0:58similar sights and sounds that carried spiritual
- 1:01significance. And as we learn about that world,
- 1:05the message of Scripture often becomes even more vivid.
- 1:09Special thanks to John Buckner, whose research
- 1:12continues to help us to understand the lands,
- 1:15customs, and culture of the Bible. Listen to these words
- 1:19from Jeremiah chapter 1. Moreover, the word
- 1:23of the Lord came unto me, saying, Jeremiah, what seest thou?
- 1:27And I said, I see a rod of an almond tree.
- 1:31Then said the Lord unto me, Thou hast well seen,
- 1:35for I will hasten my word to perform it.
- 1:39At first glance, that exchange seems unusual.
- 1:44Why an almond tree? To understand
- 1:48the answer, we have to travel to Israel. Long before most other
- 1:52trees awaken from winter, the almond tree bursts into
- 1:56bloom. While the landscape may still appear cold and
- 2:00lifeless, the almond announces that spring is already on
- 2:04its way. It is the earliest messenger of a new season,
- 2:09But there's something even more beautiful hidden in the Hebrew language.
- 2:13The Hebrew word for almond is shoked.
- 2:17The word translated I will hasten sounds very
- 2:21similar— shoked. It carries the
- 2:24idea of watching carefully,
- 2:27remaining awake, or staying alert until something
- 2:31is accomplished. God was using a word picture.
- 2:35Jeremiah, just as the almond tree is the first to awaken,
- 2:39I am watching over my word. I am awake,
- 2:43I am attentive, and what I have spoken I will surely
- 2:47bring to pass. What an encouraging truth!
- 2:51God never forgets a promise he has made.
- 2:55He never loses sight of his purposes. He never speaks empty
- 2:59words. He is always watching over his word to perform
- 3:03it. Jeremiah didn't simply see an almond tree;
- 3:07he saw an almond rod, a branch that had been cut
- 3:11from the tree. That detail points us back hundreds
- 3:15of years to another remarkable event. The nation of Israel
- 3:19had rebelled against the leadership of Moses and Aaron.
- 3:23They questioned whether God had truly chosen them.
- 3:27So, the Lord instructed the leaders of each tribe to place
- 3:30a rod before Him in the Tabernacle. Each rod was
- 3:33nothing more than a dead stick, a branch that had been cut
- 3:38from a living tree. By every human standard,
- 3:41nothing should have happened. Yet the next morning,
- 3:45Aaron's rod had done the impossible. It had budded.
- 3:49It had blossomed. It had produced ripe almonds.
- 3:53One night, 3 miracles.
- 3:57Life where there had been only death.
- 4:00God was declaring to the entire nation, the man I have chosen is
- 4:04the one I have confirmed. That rod was
- 4:08later placed inside the Ark of the Covenant as a lasting
- 4:11testimony that God's choice and God's word could both
- 4:15be trusted. Now think about what Jeremiah was seeing.
- 4:20The same God who once caused a dead branch to blossom
- 4:23was assuring his prophet that his promises and his
- 4:27warnings would also come to pass. The vision was
- 4:30not merely about a tree; it was about the certainty of
- 4:34God's Word. Sadly, Jeremiah's generation
- 4:38refused to listen. Again and again,
- 4:42the prophet pleaded with the people to repent.
- 4:46God graciously offered mercy if they would return to Him.
- 4:50But they hardened their hearts, And eventually, the judgment
- 4:54God had promised arrived just as he had said.
- 4:58That truth still speaks today.
- 5:01We live in a world where promises are easily broken.
- 5:05Contracts are violated. Commitments are abandoned.
- 5:08Words often mean very little. But God is
- 5:11different. If he promises salvation,
- 5:15he will save. If he promises forgiveness, He will
- 5:20forgive. If he promises grace,
- 5:23he will give grace. And if he warns of judgment,
- 5:28we should never assume those warnings are empty.
- 5:32The almond branch reminds us that God is always
- 5:36watching over his word. So perhaps the question is not
- 5:39whether God will keep his promises. The question is whether
- 5:43we will respond to them. Is there an area where God has
- 5:47been speaking to your heart? Perhaps he has been calling you
- 5:51to trust Christ. Perhaps he's been urging you to forgive
- 5:55someone, to obey his leading, or to turn away from a sin that you've
- 5:59tolerated for far too long. Don't ignore his voice.
- 6:03The God who watches over his word is also watching over
- 6:07your life, and his desire is not merely
- 6:11to correct you but to draw you closer to
- 6:15himself. The next time you see an almond tree,
- 6:18or even a handful of almonds at the grocery store, remember Jeremiah's
- 6:23vision. Remember Aaron's rod. And remember this simple
- 6:27but powerful truth: our God always keeps
- 6:31his word. Thank you for joining me today for this edition of Traveler's
