Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: It's podcast. Welcome to Meet Eater Trivia, the only game
- 0:12Speaker 1: show where conservation always wins. I'm your host, Spencer Newhart,
- 0:16Speaker 1: and today we're joined by Stephen Ranella, Chester, Floyd Crin, Schneider,
- 0:20Speaker 1: Hayden Sam and Seth Morris, Randall Williams and Ben Dedamante. Ben,
- 0:25Speaker 1: this is your second time on the show. How do
- 0:28Speaker 1: you feel about your chances this time around? Oh, they're
- 0:30Speaker 1: way better based on what what do you think? Well,
- 0:32Speaker 1: maybe I'll get some of the same questions as last time.
- 0:35Speaker 1: You know, Oh, okay, never happened before. I do like you, Ben,
- 0:41Speaker 1: but not that much. Right now. This is a ten
- 0:43Speaker 1: round quizt show with questions from Meat Eater's four verticals,
- 0:46Speaker 1: which are hunting, fishing, conservation and cooking, and there is
- 0:48Speaker 1: a prize. Meat Eater will donate five hundred dollars to
- 0:51Speaker 1: the conservation organization of the winners choosing and each week
- 0:55Speaker 1: here on Trivia, we reveal a new stat for the
- 0:58Speaker 1: stat of the Week. This week we're looking at Ben's
- 1:00Speaker 1: performance from the last time he was on the show.
- 1:04Speaker 1: Ben competed in the first Light Ambassador episode and got
- 1:08Speaker 1: five correct answers, which was good enough for third place
- 1:11Speaker 1: behind Clay Newcomb and Tony Peterson said second, second or third?
- 1:17Speaker 1: That's I said. Now. Ben crushed it in three of
- 1:20Speaker 1: four categories. He got sixty seven percent of questions right
- 1:24Speaker 1: in hunting and conservation and fifty percent of questions right
- 1:28Speaker 1: in fishing, but scored a zero in the category of cooking. Ben,
- 1:33Speaker 1: do you anticipate that being a hole in your game
- 1:35Speaker 1: again today or was that performance in episode three point
- 1:38Speaker 1: fifty eight just a fluke.
- 1:39Speaker 2: I think I was a little hungry and that might
- 1:41Speaker 2: have thrown me.
- 1:42Speaker 3: Off in the kicking.
- 1:43Speaker 1: Okay, do you fish a little bit, just enough, not
- 1:47Speaker 1: as much, just enough to get fifty percent of your
- 1:50Speaker 1: fishing questions right?
- 1:51Speaker 4: Yeah? On the we were talking, how are you why
- 1:55Speaker 4: know when you when you throw them a bone? Is
- 1:58Speaker 4: it like a shed hunting bone?
- 2:00Speaker 1: We'll see, we'll see. I think the room may know
- 2:04Speaker 1: when it gets there.
- 2:05Speaker 4: Okay, that was a good one, Steve. Yeah, did you
- 2:07Speaker 4: come up with that?
- 2:08Speaker 1: I didn't the joke the way you were going there
- 2:11Speaker 1: for No, no, no, no no no.
- 2:12Speaker 4: I meant he's up for later. Well said that a
- 2:14Speaker 4: good joke, like throwing them a bone. Okay, collecting bone?
- 2:21Speaker 1: Now we have some housekeeping, it get to you. In
- 2:22Speaker 1: a previous game of trivia, we had a tiebreaker between
- 2:26Speaker 1: Jannis and Tony Peterson with a twist. They agreed that
- 2:29Speaker 1: if someone who wasn't in overtime got the answer right
- 2:33Speaker 1: on the nose, then they would be declared the winner.
- 2:36Speaker 1: And that's exactly what happened when Tyler Jones snatched the
- 2:39Speaker 1: victory from Jannis by answering that there are Eastern Turkeys
- 2:43Speaker 1: in thirty eight states. Well, within fifteen minutes of that
- 2:46Speaker 1: show ending, word had traveled to Steve about what went down.
- 2:50Speaker 1: And then I got a phone call Steve, tell folks
- 2:54Speaker 1: what you told me about that tie breaker.
- 2:56Speaker 4: Something to the effect of that ain't gonna be how
- 2:58Speaker 4: it goes down.
- 3:00Speaker 1: Do you want more? Do you wanna share more of
- 3:02Speaker 1: how the phone call went? I wrote down some notes
- 3:04Speaker 1: here after an accurate representation.
- 3:08Speaker 4: I remember being flabbergasted to hear that. And there's just
- 3:14Speaker 4: no way I'm going to participate in something like that.
- 3:16Speaker 1: And how did how did word get to you so fast?
- 3:19Speaker 1: You weren't even in the office when that went down.
- 3:23Speaker 4: Like I don't remember, Brody makes sense?
- 3:26Speaker 1: What was Brody's take on the situation? Did he get
- 3:28Speaker 1: you riled up?
- 3:29Speaker 4: Oh yeah he did. Now, well I know Brody didn't
- 3:32Speaker 4: like it, and Brody wasn't either. Well, I know, but
- 3:35Speaker 4: think about how stupid it is. You could have someone
- 3:41Speaker 4: with a zero, you have some of the zero, throw
- 3:45Speaker 4: out some random ass number.
- 3:48Speaker 1: You know, still win. Now, I wrote, that sounds ridiculous.
- 3:51Speaker 4: I wrote, like, at the super Bowl they go get
- 3:55Speaker 4: the worst possible team, they'd be like, oh, you could
- 3:57Speaker 4: play too. I know you can't play three. That's a
- 4:00Speaker 4: horrible analogy.
- 4:02Speaker 2: If you catch your past that goes into the stands.
- 4:04Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, oh yeah, if you yeah at the World Series, Like,
- 4:07Speaker 4: but you can have all your players in the outfield
- 4:09Speaker 4: and if one of your players catches a homer, you
- 4:13Speaker 4: win the World Series?
- 4:14Speaker 1: Right, it would be just like that. You're right now.
- 4:17Speaker 1: I wrote down some of my favorite Steve rihsms from
- 4:19Speaker 1: that conversation. You called me a communist. You said that
- 4:23Speaker 1: I must be hanging out with elementary kids too much,
- 4:27Speaker 1: and then you declared that if I ever do that again,
- 4:30Speaker 1: I'll need to ask Clay if trivia can air on
- 4:32Speaker 1: the Bear Grease speed because it's days on the Meat
- 4:35Speaker 1: Eater Network would be over so here's the deal. We're
- 4:42Speaker 1: not going to do that again, Steve. We're not going
- 4:44Speaker 1: to have the tiebreaker that way. But what do you
- 4:46Speaker 1: think some other iteration of like if somebody does hit
- 4:49Speaker 1: it on the nose, we add an extra hundred dollars donation,
- 4:53Speaker 1: or they get to choose worthy five hundred dollars donation goes,
- 4:56Speaker 1: or just scrap the idea altogether. You hate it that much, Yeah,
- 5:00Speaker 1: I could see like a hundred bucks or something. That's
- 5:02Speaker 1: what we'll do. Then if somebody in the tiebreaker who
- 5:05Speaker 1: wasn't in the tiebreaker hits it right on the nose,
- 5:07Speaker 1: we then have a six hundred dollars donation.
- 5:09Speaker 4: Yeah, it's not like a full perfect score.
- 5:11Speaker 1: That's right, which is a thousand dollars.
- 5:14Speaker 4: That's good. Now.
- 5:15Speaker 1: The Shelby Index for this round of trivia is a two,
- 5:18Speaker 1: but I think our winner will be in the six
- 5:20Speaker 1: to seven range. And with that we're onto the game
- 5:23Speaker 1: of trivia. Play the drop phill.
- 5:26Speaker 2: Look, I need to know what I stand to win everything?
- 5:31Speaker 2: How's that?
- 5:32Speaker 4: Just tend to win everything? Demon Suckers.
- 5:43Speaker 1: Question one. The topic is fishing, and as always, this
- 5:47Speaker 1: will be multiple choice. Rotten Tomatoes declared a sequel to
- 5:52Speaker 1: this movie as the tenth worst movie of all time?
- 5:57Speaker 1: Is it a river runs through it? Free Willie, Grumpy
- 6:00Speaker 1: old Men or Jaws?
- 6:03Speaker 5: Again?
- 6:03Speaker 1: The topic is fishing. Rotten Tomatoes declared a sequel to
- 6:07Speaker 1: this movie as the tenth worst movie of all time.
- 6:11Speaker 1: A river runs through it, free Willy, grumpy old men,
- 6:16Speaker 1: or Jaws. A sequel to one of those movies is
- 6:20Speaker 1: the tenth worst movie of all time via Rotten Tomatoes.
- 6:26Speaker 1: Steve with a confident answer, No, no, okay, A quick answer,
- 6:29Speaker 1: I got it narrowed well, okay again, the choice is
- 6:32Speaker 1: A river runs through it, free, Willy, grumpy old men, Jaws? Steve,
- 6:36Speaker 1: how many of those movies have you seen?
- 6:39Speaker 4: Do you mean the sequel?
- 6:41Speaker 1: Regular movie? River runs through it? Free Willy, No, grumpy
- 6:45Speaker 1: old men, Jaws? See a little bit educated in this field? Chester,
- 6:51Speaker 1: a lot of hemn and Han Does everybody else have
- 6:53Speaker 1: an answer?
- 6:54Speaker 3: Free Willy?
- 6:55Speaker 4: He kills a killer whale?
- 6:58Speaker 1: Only I don't remember that?
- 7:00Speaker 2: Goes No?
- 7:01Speaker 1: Is everybody ready?
- 7:02Speaker 4: They do the opposite?
- 7:03Speaker 1: Ahead your answer, Steve says Jaws, Ben says grumpy old men,
- 7:10Speaker 1: Corinn says free Willy. Hayden says Jaws. Randall says free,
- 7:15Speaker 1: Willy Seth says free, Willy Chester says A river runs
- 7:19Speaker 1: through it. The correct answer is Jaws.
- 7:22Speaker 4: Oh off your good story.
- 7:25Speaker 1: Steve off to a good start, he declares.
- 7:27Speaker 4: Jaws Their Revenge.
- 7:29Speaker 1: Was released in nineteen eighty seven as the third sequel
- 7:32Speaker 1: to the nineteen seventy five classic. It has a zero
- 7:36Speaker 1: percent critics score and fifteen percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
- 7:40Speaker 1: One review said, quote, It's illogical, tension free, and filled
- 7:44Speaker 1: with cut rate special effects. Jaws The Revenge is a
- 7:48Speaker 1: sorry chapter in a once proud franchise. Other movies on
- 7:51Speaker 1: the top ten list include Super Babies two, Nicholas Cage's
- 7:56Speaker 1: movie Left Behind in two thousand and two's version of Pinocchio,
- 8:00Speaker 1: Steve just wanting to say how much I love grumpy
- 8:02Speaker 1: old men.
- 8:02Speaker 3: Move both of them.
- 8:04Speaker 1: Yeah, no way they'd be on the top ten.
- 8:06Speaker 2: Rochester, that was the only one I could think of
- 8:08Speaker 2: that Actually, like, I knew about a sequel, so I
- 8:10Speaker 2: just deducing three of them.
- 8:12Speaker 4: Have Bielberg must not have made the Jaws that.
- 8:16Speaker 1: I don't know how that went. The critics did not
- 8:21Speaker 1: like it. A river runs through it, did not have
- 8:24Speaker 1: did not have a sequel, but it was long rumored
- 8:27Speaker 1: that that would be one, and it was called a
- 8:29Speaker 1: river runs to it. If they were going to do
- 8:32Speaker 1: a sequel, that's what it was.
- 8:32Speaker 6: Going to be.
- 8:35Speaker 1: That's what they said.
- 8:36Speaker 2: You can't.
- 8:38Speaker 1: That is never happened.
- 8:39Speaker 3: Call it a river runs into a reservoir.
- 8:45Speaker 1: Question to the topic is public lands. This next great
- 8:49Speaker 1: question comes to is via Luke. Well, Nikki. If you
- 8:52Speaker 1: have a question you think it's right for media to trivia,
- 8:55Speaker 1: you can send it to trivia at the medeater dot com.
- 8:57Speaker 1: The Kasachi National Forest, which is the only national forest
- 9:02Speaker 1: in this southern state, was commemorated in twenty fifteen with
- 9:05Speaker 1: a quarter that featured a wild turkey. The Kisachie National Forest,
- 9:12Speaker 1: which is the only national forest in this southern state,
- 9:17Speaker 1: was commemorated in twenty fifteen with a quarter that featured
- 9:21Speaker 1: a wild turkey. Again, not enough Southern representation in this room. Chester,
- 9:27Speaker 1: I think, is the only one to come up with
- 9:28Speaker 1: an answer so far and Steve, but they don't look confident.
- 9:31Speaker 2: That's a doozy.
- 9:32Speaker 1: The Kisachie National Forest, which is the only national forest
- 9:37Speaker 1: in this southern state, was commemorated in twenty fifteen, with
- 9:41Speaker 1: a quarter that featured a wild Turkey quiet room thinking
- 9:49Speaker 1: real hard, Chester, how do you feel about your chances
- 9:52Speaker 1: on this one as one of the only people to
- 9:54Speaker 1: come up with an answer so far? Not very good, Steve,
- 9:58Speaker 1: same boat, not great, Okay, not good. Leave the door
- 10:04Speaker 1: open for the rest of the room though, Saschi National Forest.
- 10:08Speaker 1: Only national forest in this southern state.
- 10:12Speaker 4: All right, let's go, let's go.
- 10:15Speaker 1: Most of the room has not come up with an
- 10:17Speaker 1: answer yet. Steve is getting impatient. How are we doing
- 10:19Speaker 1: over there? Randall? Hayden, Corinn, you got your answers, I
- 10:23Speaker 1: got a wild guess, Seth.
- 10:25Speaker 3: Ben just just did some shed hunting in southern states,
- 10:28Speaker 3: so maybe he knows.
- 10:30Speaker 1: Hayden, are you ready go ahead and reveal your answers?
- 10:34Speaker 1: We have Steve saying South Carolina. Ben sang Florida. Karin
- 10:38Speaker 1: sang Kansas. Hayden sang North Carolina. Randall sang Louisiana, Seth
- 10:44Speaker 1: saying Mississippi. Chester saying South Carolina. We have a correct
- 10:47Speaker 1: answer in the room. It's Louisiana, Randall. Randall's got it right.
- 10:54Speaker 4: What did you put for the first one?
- 10:56Speaker 1: Uh? Free? William jealous?
- 10:57Speaker 7: I was I thought it was a trick question because
- 11:01Speaker 7: the main character is a mammal, because he doesn't question
- 11:05Speaker 7: fishing the category and is about a whale. So I
- 11:08Speaker 7: just thought maybe there was a I don't know.
- 11:11Speaker 1: The Kisachi National Forest is incredibly biodiverse, with over two
- 11:15Speaker 1: hundred and fifty species of mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians.
- 11:19Speaker 1: Their quarter, which was released in twenty fifteen, shows a
- 11:22Speaker 1: tom turkey in flight. It is one of only five
- 11:26Speaker 1: national forests that the United States Mint has featured in
- 11:29Speaker 1: their Beautiful Quarters program. Question three, The topic is hunting.
- 11:34Speaker 1: The world record non typical elk, which was killed in
- 11:38Speaker 1: Utah in two thousand and eight, was known by this nickname.
- 11:43Speaker 3: Would this be the bone?
- 11:44Speaker 6: Not?
- 11:47Speaker 1: I'll repeat the question again, Seth. The world record non
- 11:51Speaker 1: typical elk, which was killed in Utah in two thousand
- 11:54Speaker 1: and eight was known by this nickname. Steve with a
- 11:58Speaker 1: very quick answer, this is the bone?
- 12:00Speaker 2: Though.
- 12:00Speaker 1: Are you gonna get this one right?
- 12:02Speaker 3: Ben?
- 12:02Speaker 1: I think so, okay, this is the.
- 12:05Speaker 4: It's like, come on, that's where he's from.
- 12:08Speaker 2: Uh huh, there's big news.
- 12:09Speaker 4: He likes it.
- 12:09Speaker 1: He likes the antlers, likes antlers. This is the bone.
- 12:14Speaker 1: I'll tell you this is the bone, this is the shed.
- 12:16Speaker 1: Don't let me down here, Ben Steeve, you know this one.
- 12:19Speaker 1: Though rest of the room looks okay, I think we'll
- 12:23Speaker 1: have more right answers. Does everybody have the I think
- 12:28Speaker 1: so the nickname Krin. Are you gonna get this one?
- 12:34Speaker 1: Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Steve saying
- 12:38Speaker 1: spider bull, Ben saying spider bull, Krin saying double wide,
- 12:42Speaker 1: Hayden and Randall saying spider bull, Seth saying the King
- 12:47Speaker 1: Chester saying spider bull. They got it. The correct answer
- 12:51Speaker 1: is spider.
- 12:51Speaker 4: Bull, and we have a correct answer.
- 12:54Speaker 1: The spider Bull scored over four hundred and seventy eight inches,
- 12:57Speaker 1: which was thirteen inches bigger than the pre record. He
- 13:01Speaker 1: was killed on public land in Utah by a hunter
- 13:03Speaker 1: who held the Governor's tag and was guided by moss
- 13:06Speaker 1: Back outfitters. The Elk was famous before it was even killed,
- 13:10Speaker 1: as videos went viral that summer of the bowl in velvet.
- 13:13Speaker 1: The nickname was inspired by the antlers being splayed out
- 13:17Speaker 1: like a spider's legs. Ben, how big of a deal
- 13:20Speaker 1: was that? In your world?
- 13:21Speaker 2: It was a very big deal.
- 13:22Speaker 4: Controversial, Yeah, the governor's tag, or because the governor's tag,
- 13:27Speaker 4: they could hunt it before the season.
- 13:28Speaker 2: Right, there was that and then any weapon, right, Yeah,
- 13:31Speaker 2: nobody ever has any sheds off of that bowl, and
- 13:33Speaker 2: it was unknown until that year, so there's a lot.
- 13:36Speaker 1: What does that make it controversial?
- 13:38Speaker 4: Though?
- 13:38Speaker 2: If it was a farm bowl, that was a lot
- 13:40Speaker 2: of people said it was a farm bowl that turned
- 13:42Speaker 2: out Yeah, so there was, but there was one set
- 13:45Speaker 2: that showed up that possibly could have been him, so
- 13:47Speaker 2: kind of quelled the conservers the controversy a little.
- 13:50Speaker 1: Bit, but people still.
- 13:51Speaker 2: I mean, if you go talk to your average Joe
- 13:53Speaker 2: in Utah, half the people say as a farm bowl,
- 13:55Speaker 2: probably really? But yeah, And did.
- 13:57Speaker 1: You personally know about that elk before it was killed? Nope.
- 14:00Speaker 1: Now I'd heard rumors about it.
- 14:03Speaker 2: Somebodies of mind filmed it invelve it and then I'd
- 14:06Speaker 2: heard about it, But I don't think anybody knew it
- 14:07Speaker 2: was quite that big before they killed it.
- 14:09Speaker 1: Yeah, And I think the hunter was from Idaho maybe,
- 14:11Speaker 1: and Danny Austin, as it goes with most of those
- 14:14Speaker 1: Idaho tanks, right, he had a fleet of guides that
- 14:16Speaker 1: were looking for that ball, and I think, yeah, he
- 14:18Speaker 1: kind of rolled in and finished it. Yeah, that was
- 14:21Speaker 1: like a super shot.
- 14:22Speaker 4: I don't know, but people are gonna when something like
- 14:25Speaker 4: that happens, people are going to really like any chink
- 14:30Speaker 4: in the.
- 14:30Speaker 2: Army for sure. Oh yeah, they will swarm.
- 14:32Speaker 4: To They're going to really like anything that would be that.
- 14:35Speaker 4: It wasn't what it seems to be sure.
- 14:39Speaker 1: That was the spider Bull. Question four. The topic is conservation.
- 14:44Speaker 1: This next great question comes to us via Houston Wilson.
- 14:47Speaker 1: If you have a question you think is right for
- 14:49Speaker 1: media to trivia, you can send it to Trivia at
- 14:51Speaker 1: the mediator dot com. Name one of the five states
- 14:54Speaker 1: with the most deer farms in America. Name one of
- 15:01Speaker 1: the five states with the most deer farms in America.
- 15:06Speaker 1: Quick answers for most of the room. Everybody ready, go
- 15:12Speaker 1: ahead and reveal your answers. We have Steve saying Pennsylvania,
- 15:15Speaker 1: Ben saying Texas, Corrinne Hayden, Randall All saying Texas, Says
- 15:20Speaker 1: saying Pennsylvania, Chester saying Texas. The five states are Texas, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Minnesota.
- 15:29Speaker 1: Everybody got it right. I was surprised that Seth and
- 15:33Speaker 1: Steve went a little against the grain there with Pennsylvania.
- 15:36Speaker 1: That was kind of cocky, but it worked out well.
- 15:38Speaker 4: It's kind of the birthplace of deer farming.
- 15:40Speaker 3: Yeah, Penn State has a deer farm birthay do research.
- 15:46Speaker 1: According to Penn State University, those five states over sixty
- 15:51Speaker 1: percent of America's deer farms. Deer farming is legal in
- 15:55Speaker 1: about forty states. The National Deer Association opposes captive deer opagation,
- 16:01Speaker 1: saying the practice can introduce novel diseases and promote the
- 16:04Speaker 1: privatization of wildlife. Question five, The topic is cooking. We
- 16:08Speaker 1: will get a scoreboard update from Phil after this. Merriam
- 16:13Speaker 1: Webster defines this Russian dish as quote meat that slice
- 16:17Speaker 1: thin and cooked in a sauce of sour cream, mustard, onion,
- 16:22Speaker 1: and condiments. Again, the topic is cooking. Merriam Webster defines
- 16:28Speaker 1: this Russian dish as quote meat that sliced thin and
- 16:34Speaker 1: cooked in a sauce of sour cream, mustard, onion, and condiments.
- 16:40Speaker 1: Quick answer from Steve's Mustard. I'm just telling you what
- 16:45Speaker 1: Merriam Webster says, but you're probably right about that, Hayden.
- 16:50Speaker 1: You're gonna get this one right. Yeah, Randall I think,
- 16:54Speaker 1: I don't think, so okay again, this is question five.
- 16:59Speaker 1: Merriam Webster finds this Russian dish as quote, meat that
- 17:03Speaker 1: sliced thin and cooked in a sauce of sour cream, mustard, onion,
- 17:08Speaker 1: and condiments. Ben, we just discussed how cooking was a
- 17:12Speaker 1: hole in your game last time. Are you going to
- 17:14Speaker 1: get this one right?
- 17:15Speaker 2: No?
- 17:15Speaker 1: Okay, I might not get this one right. Actually, just
- 17:20Speaker 1: had to pick up your phone to uh, I did not.
- 17:25Speaker 1: I did not.
- 17:26Speaker 4: I did not.
- 17:27Speaker 5: You should have seen how much he was on his
- 17:28Speaker 5: phone last year.
- 17:31Speaker 1: Over there.
- 17:33Speaker 4: No, no, I was. I was dealing with a certain
- 17:36Speaker 4: podcasting issue that we had to rectify immediately.
- 17:39Speaker 1: Does everybody have an answer for the Russian dish that's
- 17:44Speaker 1: meat sliced thin and cooked in a sauce of sour cream, mustard, onion,
- 17:49Speaker 1: and condiments.
- 17:50Speaker 4: Sound that great?
- 17:53Speaker 1: It's everybody ready?
- 17:55Speaker 4: Go ahead, and son of a bitch, you guys.
- 17:59Speaker 1: Got Ben says Ruben corinceas Stroganoff Hayden says strogan Off Hayden,
- 18:05Speaker 1: with Randall without an answer, Seth saying strogan Off Chester
- 18:09Speaker 1: without an answer. The correct answer is strogan Off mustard noodle.
- 18:16Speaker 1: Thing talks about That's.
- 18:19Speaker 3: Why I said I didn't think I didn't strogan Off down,
- 18:22Speaker 3: because that is I like.
- 18:25Speaker 1: This meal is named after Count strogan Off, a Russian
- 18:29Speaker 1: aristocrat who had the meal created by his French chef.
- 18:33Speaker 1: The original recipe used a French mustard and Russian sour
- 18:37Speaker 1: cream to season the meat. If you want a more
- 18:39Speaker 1: modern version, then check out Lucas Leaf's recipe on the
- 18:42Speaker 1: mediater dot com called braised bison strogan Off. See or
- 18:47Speaker 1: you could kicking yourself for not getting that one right. Yeah,
- 18:49Speaker 1: I mean, come on, how many times a year do
- 18:51Speaker 1: you make strogan Off?
- 18:52Speaker 4: You think none?
- 18:53Speaker 1: Never? No, Okay, you don't like it, kids don't like it.
- 18:57Speaker 4: It's just not on my repertoire.
- 19:00Speaker 1: I'm sure you make some things that are close though,
- 19:01Speaker 1: like in that but't it?
- 19:03Speaker 4: But yeah, saw stuff man. But uh no, it's ridiculous
- 19:10Speaker 4: that I didn't get that right.
- 19:11Speaker 7: I'm disappointed I missed it, but I'm equally as delighted
- 19:15Speaker 7: about Count Stroganoff.
- 19:19Speaker 3: Phil.
- 19:19Speaker 1: We are halfway through the game of trivia. Give us
- 19:21Speaker 1: a scoreboard update.
- 19:23Speaker 5: Sure thing, it's a pretty good game. Everyone's doing all right.
- 19:26Speaker 5: We got Seth corinne Chester and Ben all of two
- 19:30Speaker 5: points apiece. Steven Randall have three, and in first place
- 19:33Speaker 5: is Hayden samok with four points.
- 19:36Speaker 4: That's not gonna hold. What did I do to you?
- 19:39Speaker 2: Man?
- 19:40Speaker 4: I'm just like, I'm just saying that's not gonna hold.
- 19:43Speaker 1: Phil. We need a little more energy because Hayden's in
- 19:45Speaker 1: first place. Is that? Is that why you delivered that
- 19:47Speaker 1: so somber? No, I don't know.
- 19:49Speaker 5: Sometimes when I'm editing the podcast, I'm like, I gotta
- 19:52Speaker 5: ton it down.
- 19:52Speaker 1: You brought too much energy.
- 19:53Speaker 5: Other time I'll bring I'll bring it back up right.
- 19:57Speaker 4: Sizing the energy No. One.
- 20:00Speaker 3: Ruth's Raide.
- 20:11Speaker 1: Question six. The topic is woodsmanship. The use of this
- 20:16Speaker 1: insecticide that starts with a P makes it seventy four
- 20:20Speaker 1: times less likely that you'll be bit by a tick.
- 20:25Speaker 1: Come on, the use of this insecticide that starts with
- 20:29Speaker 1: a P makes it seventy four times less likely that
- 20:33Speaker 1: you'll be bit by a tick. Steve thinks it's too easy,
- 20:36Speaker 1: but it looks.
- 20:36Speaker 4: Like the nature of this question makes it ninety more
- 20:40Speaker 4: likely that you'll get it right.
- 20:41Speaker 1: You're going to struggle. I like these lobs. Are you
- 20:46Speaker 1: going to get this one? Ben?
- 20:47Speaker 2: Yes? Oh?
- 20:48Speaker 1: Okay, krinn may not. The rest of the room looks
- 20:53Speaker 1: pretty confident. Randall, you're going to get this one.
- 20:57Speaker 7: I think so.
- 20:58Speaker 1: The use of this insecticide that starts with a P
- 21:01Speaker 1: makes it seventy four times less likely that you'll be
- 21:04Speaker 1: bit by a tick Karinn. No pressure. Better think. We're
- 21:07Speaker 1: waiting on you. You give up, go ahead and reveal
- 21:12Speaker 1: your answers. We have Steve saying permathrin, Ben saying permathrin
- 21:16Speaker 1: Karinn without an answer, Hayden and Randall, everyone else saying permathrin.
- 21:21Speaker 1: They got it. The correct answer is permathrin. I should
- 21:24Speaker 1: have made you guys spell it. There were some creative
- 21:27Speaker 1: spellings there, permethrin, something like that permethrine. Okay, I'm saying
- 21:35Speaker 1: it wrong, then permathrinn. It can be used to treat
- 21:43Speaker 1: and here. Most applications are odorless and lasts for six weeks,
- 21:48Speaker 1: making a great choice for foragers and hunters. According to
- 21:51Speaker 1: a two thousand and one study, the best place to
- 21:54Speaker 1: apply it is from your feet to your shins. This
- 21:57Speaker 1: was tested against other areas like your waist, chest, and head.
- 22:01Speaker 4: I'm gonna put it on the top of my head.
- 22:04Speaker 1: Question seven. The topic is conservation. This is our Listener
- 22:09Speaker 1: Question of the Week, which was won by Will Farr
- 22:12Speaker 1: for sending this great question. Will is going to get
- 22:14Speaker 1: a book signed by Steve. There are only six hundred
- 22:18Speaker 1: of these left in the wild, which are considered to
- 22:20Speaker 1: be the tallest bird in North America at five feet tall.
- 22:27Speaker 1: There are only six hundred of these left in the wild,
- 22:30Speaker 1: which are considered to be the tallest bird in North
- 22:33Speaker 1: America at five feet tall. The room looks stumped. Maybe
- 22:39Speaker 1: Randall has it. Steve, uh looks like he's thinking on it.
- 22:44Speaker 1: Only six hundred of them left in the wild, and
- 22:46Speaker 1: they're considered the tallest bird in North America. Ben, are
- 22:52Speaker 1: you gonna get this one right?
- 22:54Speaker 2: Uh? No?
- 22:57Speaker 1: Ben? What's the next stop on you shed hunting tour?
- 23:00Speaker 2: I'm knocking out Montana on this rip, and then probably
- 23:03Speaker 2: just start. I may go to Maine. I might fly
- 23:05Speaker 2: out and look for some moose paddles after that.
- 23:06Speaker 1: Really in Maine? Have you been there before?
- 23:09Speaker 3: Nope?
- 23:10Speaker 2: Stoked?
- 23:11Speaker 1: Is it guaranteed you come home with one or not?
- 23:13Speaker 2: No? But I think there's pretty good odds with the
- 23:16Speaker 2: numbers out there.
- 23:18Speaker 1: Again, only six hundred of these left in the wild,
- 23:20Speaker 1: which are considered the tallest bird in North America at
- 23:23Speaker 1: five feet tall. Does everybody who's going to come up
- 23:26Speaker 1: with an answer have an answer?
- 23:28Speaker 4: Second?
- 23:28Speaker 1: Okay, another second? Randall, are you going to get this one?
- 23:33Speaker 7: I think I have a decent guess, Hayden, Now I
- 23:37Speaker 7: got I'm listening to like the most basic thing I
- 23:39Speaker 7: could think of.
- 23:40Speaker 4: But I know it's wrong because we can think of
- 23:41Speaker 4: a bunch of other things through probably taller.
- 23:43Speaker 1: Seth, how about you?
- 23:46Speaker 3: Not a chance? I don't think.
- 23:48Speaker 1: Steve, how we doing over here?
- 23:49Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 23:49Speaker 4: It's not good, dude.
- 23:51Speaker 1: Is everybody ready? You go ahead and reveal your answers.
- 23:55Speaker 1: We have Steve saying mute swan, Ben saying great blue heron,
- 24:00Speaker 1: Krin saying a kind of stork. Hayden sang condor, Randall
- 24:04Speaker 1: saying whooping crane, Seth saying California, condor Chester saying flamingo.
- 24:11Speaker 1: The correct answer is whooping crane. Randall got it right.
- 24:15Speaker 4: I accidentally wrote whooping cranes also have a wingspan of
- 24:22Speaker 4: seven and a half feet.
- 24:23Speaker 1: Their populations plummeted due to habitat loss and unregulated hunting,
- 24:27Speaker 1: and by nineteen forty there were only twenty one left
- 24:30Speaker 1: on Earth. Biologists believe that every whooping crane around today
- 24:35Speaker 1: descended from a small flock that breeds in Texas.
- 24:38Speaker 4: You know how I was saying, Hold on a minute,
- 24:40Speaker 4: I was trying to think of that.
- 24:41Speaker 1: You're trying to come up with whooping crane? Have you
- 24:43Speaker 1: ever seen one?
- 24:44Speaker 4: Yes?
- 24:44Speaker 1: Where?
- 24:45Speaker 4: Yes? In the Texas Gulf Coast?
- 24:47Speaker 3: Yeh didn't we see him?
- 24:48Speaker 4: Yes?
- 24:49Speaker 1: Yeah, an of a gun.
- 24:51Speaker 4: So if you think about it, definitely see one like
- 24:55Speaker 4: that should.
- 24:56Speaker 3: Count Uh huh.
- 24:57Speaker 1: You're probably one of the few people to have seen one.
- 25:00Speaker 1: This room one of the six hundred left.
- 25:02Speaker 4: Question eight.
- 25:02Speaker 1: We'll get a scoreboard update from Phil after this. The
- 25:05Speaker 1: topic is mountain men. This mountain man whose parents were
- 25:09Speaker 1: a slave owner and slave went by the nickname bloody Arm.
- 25:17Speaker 1: Steve with a confident answer, no one else. Again, This
- 25:21Speaker 1: mountain man whose parents were a slave owner and slave
- 25:25Speaker 1: went by the nickname bloody Arm. Steve, you got this
- 25:30Speaker 1: one right? Do you like this mountain man? You just
- 25:35Speaker 1: don't want to give any hints we talk about it, Okay,
- 25:41Speaker 1: you got Steve. May be the only one who gets this.
- 25:44Speaker 7: I am struggling.
- 25:48Speaker 1: This mountain man, whose parents were a slave owner and
- 25:52Speaker 1: slave went by the nickname bloody Arm. I think Brody
- 25:56Speaker 1: would get this if he were here. The rest of
- 25:58Speaker 1: the room is struggling. Seth, you had an answer, You
- 26:01Speaker 1: think you give a chance at Hayden has his eyes
- 26:06Speaker 1: crossed over there. He's thinking so hard Are you gonna
- 26:10Speaker 1: come up with an answer? Hidden?
- 26:13Speaker 4: No, No, I'm not.
- 26:15Speaker 1: It's everybody ready, Randall undefeated. Go ahead and reveal your answers.
- 26:21Speaker 1: We have, Steve saying Jim Beckworth, Ben sang Liver, Eaton, Johnson,
- 26:25Speaker 1: Corin saying Colter Hayden, sang Leroy Jenkins, Randall without an
- 26:31Speaker 1: answer saying Fitzgerald Chester saying Hugh Glass, Steve got it.
- 26:36Speaker 1: The correct answer is James Beckworth. Beckworth's dad was from
- 26:41Speaker 1: a prominent white Virginia family, and his mom was one
- 26:44Speaker 1: of that family slaves. Beckworth's parents moved to Missouri when
- 26:48Speaker 1: he was a young child, where he was raised as
- 26:51Speaker 1: a free son of a successful farmer. Beckworth gained the
- 26:54Speaker 1: nickname Bloody Arm through his notable skill as a fighter. Steve,
- 26:59Speaker 1: what do you got on? James Beckworth?
- 27:00Speaker 4: He married into the absorca the Crow, the Crow tribe,
- 27:05Speaker 4: and live with them for quite some time.
- 27:07Speaker 1: Was he the one who was rumored to have been
- 27:09Speaker 1: killed by them. They think he was maybe poisoned.
- 27:13Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 27:13Speaker 1: I thought I thought it was him. I was never
- 27:15Speaker 1: never certain. That's that's such a shad thrown to Steve too.
- 27:20Speaker 4: Every time there's a mountain Man question, I'm like, oh,
- 27:22Speaker 4: this is Steve's bone for the week.
- 27:24Speaker 1: Brody would have got it. Brody was here though, Right, Well,
- 27:29Speaker 1: we have two questions left. Give us a scoreboard update.
- 27:31Speaker 1: I think it got interesting.
- 27:33Speaker 6: And you can't stand the heat, Get out of the meat,
- 27:36Speaker 6: eat your podcast studio. Still in the game are seth
- 27:46Speaker 6: Chester and Ben with three points of peace, and tied
- 27:49Speaker 6: for first place are Hayden Randall.
- 27:52Speaker 5: And Stephen Ranilla with how many five points?
- 27:57Speaker 1: Two questions that left? Question nine and the topic is fishing.
- 28:02Speaker 1: This river, which is named after a major American city,
- 28:06Speaker 1: was declared the world's best walleye fishery by in Fishermen
- 28:10Speaker 1: in twenty fifteen. This river, which is named after a
- 28:16Speaker 1: major American city, was declared the world's best walleye fishery
- 28:20Speaker 1: by in Fishermen in twenty fifteen.
- 28:24Speaker 4: What do you got?
- 28:24Speaker 7: Hat?
- 28:24Speaker 3: You got it?
- 28:25Speaker 1: No? Man?
- 28:26Speaker 6: See?
- 28:26Speaker 1: How are you going to get this?
- 28:27Speaker 2: Oh?
- 28:27Speaker 4: Way?
- 28:27Speaker 2: I got it.
- 28:29Speaker 1: This river.
- 28:31Speaker 4: It hit me like a diamond bullet, like at first
- 28:34Speaker 4: flame first I didn't have it, and then it like
- 28:39Speaker 4: struck me in the forehead.
- 28:41Speaker 1: And now you got it right, like a diamond bullet.
- 28:44Speaker 1: This river, which is named after a major American city,
- 28:48Speaker 1: was declared the world's best walleye fishery by in Fishermen
- 28:51Speaker 1: in twenty fifteen.
- 28:52Speaker 4: I should I should clarify that I stole the diamond
- 28:54Speaker 4: bullet line in Apocalypse Now, Marlon Brando's character Kurtz how
- 29:03Speaker 4: to Win the Vietnam War struck him like.
- 29:06Speaker 1: A diamond bullet. Still don't really understand the diamond part
- 29:11Speaker 1: of it, Souse, You would just hit that hard? Is
- 29:13Speaker 1: that what it's implying? Okay, how to win the war? Seth?
- 29:17Speaker 1: Are you going to get this one?
- 29:20Speaker 3: Don't know?
- 29:21Speaker 1: Are you going to be sad when Chester gets this
- 29:23Speaker 1: walleye fishing question right and you don't. I might not
- 29:26Speaker 1: have it right.
- 29:27Speaker 3: Maybe I have it right and he gets it wrong.
- 29:28Speaker 1: Oh I like that too. Does everybody have an answer?
- 29:31Speaker 3: Maybe we both have the same answer.
- 29:33Speaker 1: Go ahead and reveal your answer. We have Steve saying Detroit,
- 29:36Speaker 1: Ben sang Detroit Karinn without an answer Hayden saying Saint Louis,
- 29:41Speaker 1: Randall saying Detroit, seth saying Detroit, Chester saying Detroit. They
- 29:46Speaker 1: got it. The correct answer is Detroit Detroit. The Detroit
- 29:50Speaker 1: River is famous for its walleye run that happens each
- 29:53Speaker 1: spring when spawners leave Lake Erie. Cabellus holds an annual
- 29:57Speaker 1: tournament there, where it's not uncommon for five fish limits
- 30:00Speaker 1: to exceed fifty pounds. The tournament director called it a
- 30:04Speaker 1: jigging paradise for walleye anglers.
- 30:06Speaker 3: It's it's actually unique to a style of fishing called
- 30:10Speaker 3: hand lining.
- 30:12Speaker 1: Explain it.
- 30:12Speaker 3: It's like I've never done it before. I've never even
- 30:16Speaker 3: seen anyone do it before. But it's basically you have
- 30:19Speaker 3: like this spring loaded reel and let me know, Jester,
- 30:24Speaker 3: if I'm messing this up, and well, like basically when
- 30:28Speaker 3: you let go, like you you can pull the line
- 30:31Speaker 3: out and let let line in like real easily because
- 30:35Speaker 3: it's spring loaded and you that goes out and there's
- 30:38Speaker 3: leaders attached to it that you can hook like you know,
- 30:43Speaker 3: whatever apple is, whatever you want to troll, and.
- 30:45Speaker 1: This is just like, oh, it's so it's like a
- 30:47Speaker 1: vertical jigging. Technique.
- 30:48Speaker 3: Well, you actually put a big weight on the bottom
- 30:50Speaker 3: so it goes down. It's the bottom that you have.
- 30:52Speaker 3: You have leaders off of that drift or slow troll. Yeah,
- 30:55Speaker 3: and you can use you can since the lot the
- 30:58Speaker 3: spool is spring loaded, and you can like pull back
- 31:01Speaker 3: and forth and like get different speeds and speed up
- 31:04Speaker 3: your bait, slow them down, that kind of stuff.
- 31:06Speaker 1: Detroit River, Phil, we have one question left, Detroit. Where
- 31:09Speaker 1: do we stand?
- 31:11Speaker 5: Seth Chester and Ben have also been eliminated and can
- 31:16Speaker 5: no longer win. However, Hayden is still in the game
- 31:18Speaker 5: with five points. Steve and Randall are tied up with six.
- 31:23Speaker 1: Question ten, the topic is cooking. This next great question
- 31:26Speaker 1: comes to us via David Valdez. If you have a
- 31:28Speaker 1: question you think is right for meat Eatter Trivia, you
- 31:30Speaker 1: can send it to trivia at the meadeater dot com.
- 31:34Speaker 1: Although many think the red liquid that's released from a
- 31:37Speaker 1: steak is blood, it's actually this protein. Although many think
- 31:44Speaker 1: that the red liquid that's released from a steak is blood,
- 31:48Speaker 1: it's actually this protein. Steve, you look confident. Are you
- 31:52Speaker 1: gonna get this one right? On the contrary Randal, have
- 31:57Speaker 1: you come up with an answer yet?
- 31:58Speaker 7: I have an answer.
- 32:00Speaker 1: Do you think you're going to get this one right?
- 32:03Speaker 4: State?
- 32:04Speaker 7: I think I have a good shot.
- 32:06Speaker 1: We may be headed to a tiebreaker, Hayden in case
- 32:09Speaker 1: they're wrong. Do you have the right answer?
- 32:12Speaker 7: It's not looking good for me, man Steve the the
- 32:16Speaker 7: reflection on the uh No, I've never noticed it, but
- 32:22Speaker 7: you're holding your head.
- 32:23Speaker 1: Could you see his answer?
- 32:24Speaker 4: Randall?
- 32:25Speaker 1: Yes, do you have the same answer?
- 32:26Speaker 5: I do?
- 32:27Speaker 1: Okay?
- 32:29Speaker 8: Is everybody as I can read backwards? Is everybody ready?
- 32:35Speaker 8: Go ahead and reveal your answers. You have Steve saying
- 32:39Speaker 8: what does that say? Albumen Ben saying what does that say?
- 32:43Speaker 2: My globe?
- 32:44Speaker 1: Myoglobe? And Grin saying plans, Randall saying I wrote that
- 32:51Speaker 1: sas without an answer. Chess you're saying.
- 32:54Speaker 7: It was it was small, and I was reading it
- 32:57Speaker 7: backwards in the reflection.
- 32:58Speaker 4: You know what's the.
- 32:59Speaker 1: Worst you want to when?
- 33:00Speaker 4: Do you have an answer? And Spencer looks at the
- 33:02Speaker 4: answer and says, what that's not good news?
- 33:08Speaker 1: That was a spoiler because Randall got it right. The
- 33:10Speaker 1: correct answer is mio globe and and that makes Randal
- 33:14Speaker 1: our winner. Answers Steve, do you think the diamond bullet
- 33:21Speaker 1: never came on myoglobe.
- 33:22Speaker 4: Huh, you know what the hell human is? You know,
- 33:25Speaker 4: if you smoked salmon too hot? Okay, and the and
- 33:28Speaker 4: the fat, Oh yeah, that's that's the white So I
- 33:32Speaker 4: mean that could have been a great answer for another question.
- 33:36Speaker 4: That half point is that white ship that comes out
- 33:39Speaker 4: of sam when we smoke it too hot.
- 33:40Speaker 1: It would have been the whooping crane half point in
- 33:43Speaker 1: this half point, technically the.
- 33:46Speaker 4: Count Stroganov knew a quarter point.
- 33:48Speaker 1: I think Steve one actually mile globe and helps store
- 33:53Speaker 1: oxygen in your muscles. It's actually one of the key
- 33:55Speaker 1: differences that separates white meat from red meat. Simply put,
- 33:59Speaker 1: the more mind globein cells there are the redder the
- 34:02Speaker 1: meat is. So animals like birds with a low level
- 34:05Speaker 1: of mio globe and have white meat, and animals like
- 34:08Speaker 1: mammals with a high level of myoglobin have red meat. Spencer,
- 34:12Speaker 1: I've got trivia question for you. What's the protein in fish?
- 34:17Speaker 1: White flaky fish that people are allergic to? What's the protein?
- 34:21Speaker 1: Do parvel booming?
- 34:25Speaker 2: And I'm allergic to it?
- 34:26Speaker 3: Did you know Tony Peterson's allergic to fish too?
- 34:35Speaker 1: You guys could go out and throw fish at each
- 34:37Speaker 1: other Randall. As the winner, you get to choose where
- 34:43Speaker 1: the five hundred dollars donation goes. So what's it going
- 34:46Speaker 1: to be? Uh, let's give it to the t RCP.
- 34:49Speaker 1: What do you like about them? Randall, Well, we're in familiar.
- 34:52Speaker 7: We were in Washington, DC a couple of weeks ago
- 34:55Speaker 7: for the annual Conservation Awards dinner, Capital Conservation Capital Conservation
- 35:00Speaker 7: Awards Dinner, and it was just a wonderful reminder of
- 35:04Speaker 7: all the good work that's being done across party lines
- 35:08Speaker 7: in DC to get things done for hunters and anglers.
- 35:10Speaker 1: Who were some award winners there.
- 35:13Speaker 7: Well, each year they give an award to two lawmakers,
- 35:16Speaker 7: one from each side of the aisle. So this year
- 35:18Speaker 7: it went to Joe Mansion and then of West Virginia
- 35:22Speaker 7: and Blake Moore of Utah.
- 35:23Speaker 1: Like an arm wrestling award or what's the award for.
- 35:26Speaker 7: It's for just being a powerful advocate for hunters and
- 35:30Speaker 7: anglers and the resources that we use in DC. And
- 35:35Speaker 7: so those two gentlemen have gotten a lot done putting
- 35:40Speaker 7: together some big conservation bills and packages over the years.
- 35:43Speaker 7: And yeah, it was just a great evening. Got to
- 35:46Speaker 7: run into a lot of old colleagues, and then folks
- 35:48Speaker 7: from all sorts of different conservation groups that are getting together.
- 35:52Speaker 4: Yeah, they do one, one person from each side of
- 35:54Speaker 4: the aisle. Then they do one from each chamber or
- 35:56Speaker 4: so one Senator, one Congressman, and they do two than
- 36:00Speaker 4: they do someone from the private sector, but this year
- 36:02Speaker 4: is two people from the private sector, lifelong conservationists and
- 36:07Speaker 4: wildlife professionals. Becky Humphries who retired from National Wild Turkey
- 36:12Speaker 4: Federation and Howard Vincent, who retired from Pheasants Forever Quail Forever.
- 36:18Speaker 1: Well done, Randall, tough batch of questions. You win it
- 36:21Speaker 1: with seven, right, Ben? How made you get right this round?
- 36:24Speaker 1: Five again? Five? You are consistent. We're just gonna bring
